In this edition of CdA Magazine, our team has done everything possible to bring us the essence of summer. Begin by biting into some of our favorite food truck fares. I already feel Jimmy’s homestyle pork carnitas tacos calling my name!

I enjoyed the guide to what to eat in North Idaho’s forests and meadows. I also loved learning about some of our region’s mountain lakes. And after reading about dogs that love nothing better than a boat ride, I’m ready to head out on the lake myself.

I love the way that Coeur d’Alene attracts so many talented people. In this issue, we feature caring nurses, a wardrobe consultant and a collection of authors who tell our region’s stories. The local ghost tales give me a new appreciation for what secrets might lie beneath our streets.

Coconut Shrimp

1½ tablespoons olive oil 2 ounces diced shallots ½ teaspoon chili flakes 4 cups coconut milk ½ cup white granulated sugar 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 1 tablespoon coconut extract 35 size 16-20 shrimp

Sauté shallots in olive oil over medium heat until translucent and aromatic. Add chili flakes and sauté for two more minutes. Add coconut milk and bring to a boil, stirring occasionally. Whisk in sugar until dissolved, add in vanilla and coconut extract. Cool properly. Sauté shrimp in a separate pan until mostly cooked. Add coconut mixture to shrimp and allow to reduce until thick. Serve with toasted coconut as garnish. Serves 5.

A graduate of Le Cordon Bleu in Las Vegas, Chason trained with José Andres, Thomas Keller and Shirley Chung. He worked as sous chef at Beverlys before he and his wife, Rachel, purchased and demolished Carlin Bay Resort. While they build a new resort and restaurant on the site, their Latitudes food truck has become a popular stop for hungry boaters and motorists on Lake Coeur d’Alene.

Fusion Salad with Seared Blackened Ahi

1/3 cup sesame seeds 1/2 head red romaine 1/4 cup diced red onions 1/3 cup fresh blueberries 6-ounce portion yellowfin tuna 1 tablespoon of Cajun seasoning 3 strawberries, trimmed & quartered 1/3 cup segmented mandarin oranges 1/2 cup grated Cotija cheese 1/2 avocado, sliced 1/3 cup candied walnuts 2 ounces poppy seed vinaigrette

Chop the red romaine and plate it, then sprinkle Cotija over the top, followed by strawberries, blueberries, red onions and candied walnuts. To prepare the ahi, put the Cajun seasoning on one plate and sesame seeds on another. Pat the portion of ahi tuna on all sides in the Cajun mix and then cover with the sesame seeds. Heat pan to medium hot, coat with cooking spray, then sear ahi for 1 1/2 minutes on each side. Give it a splash of water and cover for 10 seconds, then remove the fish from the pan and let sit for 1 minute. Slice and add the ahi to the salad, finish with slices of avocado and a side of poppyseed vinaigrette. Serves 1.

3 pounds pork butt minced garlic salt to taste 2 cups manteca (lard) orange juice tortillas cilantro onions, chopped

Take the pork butt and cut the meat into two- to threeinch cubes. Coat each piece with salt and garlic. Add the meat to an oven-safe pot, add two cups of manteca, then add enough orange juice to cover the pork. Place the pot in the oven with a lid and cook for three to four hours at 350º. Remove, drain and shred the meat. Now it’s ready to eat with tortillas, onions, cilantro and your favorite salsa. Buen provecho! Serves 4-6.

Jimmy's grandfather loved cooking directly on the coals in the traditional way, and his abuelita made tortillas every morning from the corn their family grew, dried and ground. “People will order just one taco to try it out, and then the flavor hits them,” he says. ”I watch them turn around and order five or even ten tacos, saying ‘That’s the flavor I remember!’“ 30

Mad Moose Fry Bread Tacos

2 cups flour 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 tablespoon baking powder 3/4 cup warm water 1/2 pound bacon or ground breakfast sausage 4 eggs 1/4 cup shredded cheese 2 green onions, chopped

Mix flour, salt, baking powder and warm water, cover loosely and let rest for 20 minutes. Cook up bacon or sausage. Scramble the eggs. Pull off a golf-ball-sized piece of dough and stretch it out very thin; don't tear it. Dust with flour to keep dough from sticking. Pour enough vegetable oil into a pot to cover it with 2 inches of oil and heat to 350º. One at a time, fry the dough until golden brown, flipping it halfway. Drain on a paper towel. Plate and top with eggs, meat, cheese and green onions and drizzle with Hollandaise. Serves 6.

Inspired by her grandmother, the first woman to complete every one of the 100 Hikes in the Inland Northwest, Taylor Jacklin is on the same quest. She has already hiked more than 85 of the trails, and expects to join the century club herself this season.

My mom started taking me hiking as a young girl.

We owned property in the national forest, where my parents really immersed us in the backcountry experience: hiking, pack trips, elk hunting trips and snowmobile trips. Something about the mountains always felt like home to me. My mom, Lynndi Jacklin, would say we were going on a couple-mile hike that would later turn into 12 or 15 miles. As much as we all complained, it was the most rewarding experience. She was always the one to inspire my passion and light that flame. I think she saw my love for the mountains and encouraged it. I finished most of my 100 Hikes trails with my mom.

Why do I hike?

This past summer, I walked a 300-mile section of the Pacific Northwest Trail, where I got asked this a lot. People always find it strange that I’d walk thousands of miles in the woods with really no trophy at the end. For me, the real prize is the journey. There is so much I can sort out in my mind just by a short walk in the woods. And when you continue to push your limits in the backcountry, you recognize what you are really capable of, in body and mind.

My grandmother, Dorothy Jacklin, is a hiking goddess. If anyone knows the Jacklin family, you would know they never back down from a challenge. She is a tough cookie. Since I was a little girl, I’ve admired the heck out of her. And when I was a teen, I watched her finish all routes in the 100 Hikes in the Inland Northwest by Rich Landers and receive a well-deserved award.

She set an example for all of her grandchildren that no matter your age, or walk in life, you can achieve amazing things. Whenever I asked what pushed her to finish all 100 hikes, she always just answered, “Why not?”

North Idaho is a gem.

There is nothing like it, and the amount of outdoor activities that you can just indulge in is pretty incredible. I love a state that challenges your hiking ability, and our mountains certainly do that.

I 've never liked location sharing.

Instead, I encourage people to research and find these places themselves.

An app on your phone or a quick Google search doesn’t offer the same sense of adventure. When you actually learn about these places, you find out how to care for them and what animals you might encounter. Buy a local hiking book and delete those silly hiking apps on your phone that exploit these places. Reading a map is a forgotten skill. Learn it and enrich your outdoor experience immensely.

I feel that I've lived so many lives.

I grew up on a large farm on the Rathdrum Prairie, where I barrel raced horses. When I graduated high school, I escaped to massage school and yoga teacher training, a complete 360 from the world I grew up in. I spent a lot of time traveling abroad, visiting 32 countries before returning to North Idaho, where I met my partner, Ben Read. I’ve never lived what you might call a practical life. Instead, I have lived my life with ultimate flow, and I’m happiest that way.

The right gear makes the difference.

I recently upgraded to a frameless Waymark Gear pack that adapts to various-sized loads. I wear weatherappropriate clothing in multiple thin layers, and I favor Salomon trail runners instead of hiking boots. I love snacks throughout the day. If you like regular meals then I’m probably not the gal to ask, but Good To Go foods on Amazon has amazing backpacker meals that are healthy and delicious. I always pack a liter of water in a smart water bottle and bring a Sawyer straw to purify water along the way. I love the taste of mountain water.

I always take a map and compass, first-aid kit and knife or multi-tool.

Funny things happen out there.

I was hiking through Hells Canyon in central Idaho when I slid on some rocks and fell butt-first onto a pile of cacti. My hiking buddy plucked the needles out of my butt and thighs one by one. I look back and laugh because it’s not something that is likely to happen to just anyone. But it would happen to me.

Difficult re-entry.

The most difficult part of any hike for me is leaving the trail or the backcountry and heading back into the real world. For some reason, this thing we call “adulting,” the so-called real world, doesn’t come easy to me.

Dear mountains: As I stare over your beautiful snow-covered peaks, I want you to know how extraordinarily grateful I am. You have taught me to feel totally comfortable with being uncomfortable. You made me scream with frustration, cry with anger and toss my trekking poles out across the trail, only to fill me back up again with beautiful views and exceptional growth. You showed me it’s important to wake up and gear up, even when it’s hard, and look at my next mountain, my next fear, and softly whisper, “Let’s freaking dance.” When your woods are silent, I have learned simply to listen and not to be afraid. Thank you for all you have taught me over the years. I want to stare each challenge in the face, wake up every day a stronger, wilder and wiser woman, to see more of our beautiful world. The mountains, the stars, the water; it is all working in your favor. Remember that.

found sailing on the shores of Lake Coeur d’Alene, or maybe it found me.

I was 22 years old, a Wisconsin farm boy who’d just been put in charge of the North Idaho College beach. Looking at our little fleet of rental boats, I felt like I’d been handed a thrilling empire, but one I knew nothing about. I recall that perfect mix of fear and excitement that either cripples or drives you. My life changed forever that day.

went through the school of hard knocks that most sailors do; in my case on the waters of northern Idaho, western Montana and the Puget Sound, then farther afield as a sailing instructor and delivery skipper in the Grenadine islands of the southern Caribbean. With each boat ride, sailing sunk its teeth deeper into me. In all my outdoor adventures on mountains, rivers and desert trails, I’ve never found anything quite like it.

Sailing is a balance of physical ability and cognitive focus, working together to create movement on water through the

power of wind. Time and again, I learned lessons in vulnerability and resilience, often thanks to Nature University's toughest professor, Dr. Weather.

In 2015, I left my college job to be a full-time professional sailor. Those of us who’ve made it in this game tend to have one thing in common: At some point, we all packed our lives into a small bag and took a big leap. I spent the next five years living the endless summer; sailing in Grenada in the fall, winter, and spring and river guiding on Idaho’s Salmon River in the summer. Those were some of the best years of my life.

But in the fall of 2019 I burned out. Too many trips. Too much booze. And not enough purpose. I left the Caribbean, cleaned myself up and hit the reset button on my life. And a vital part of that reset turned out to be a certain sailboat.

During my escapades in the islands, I’d found a sweet boat. Or maybe she found me. Sleek, seductive, a J/105, she was 35 feet of all my hopes and dreams.

The only problem was, she was lying in a weed-covered boatyard in Antigua, rotten and forgotten. It took an act of bold piracy with my friend Captain RJ to procure her, and a refit more extensive and expensive than I could have imagined to bring her back to true sailing shape.

A LIFETIME OF SAILING IS TRANSCENDENT.

he SV Dogsmile, as I named her, is built for speed, with a dash of comfort; the ultimate platform for interpreting wind and water. She’s strong, capable and true; while also caring, safe and wise. That boat puts the smiles on people’s faces that get me out of bed in the morning.

In March of 2020 I went back to the islands to get Dogsmile. The plan was to sail to the U.S. and either reluctantly sell her or put her in a charter fleet. But boats and life can prove surprising. Five months and 20,000 land, air, and sea miles later, my boat and I were in Idaho and I was launching a nonprofit, therapeutic sailing program. Dogsmile Adventures was born out of an experience that pushed me to my limit and revealed a purpose from a depth I’d never dared to reach.

My trip from Grenada, West Indies to Bayview, Idaho in the spring of 2020 was the very definition of adventure. It 44

felt like the proverbial hero’s journey, with formidable distances, unlikely allies, near disasters, heartache, self-doubt and the impossible plot twist of COVID-19.

The trip also brought enchanting wildlife encounters and natural beauty in solitude and friendship.

The 2,000-nautical-mile delivery from Grenada to Florida was supposed to be a three-week dash. Instead, it turned into a two-and-a-half month excursion, including six weeks “stuck” in the USVI.

then towed Dogsmile all the way across America from Florida to Idaho with a rented Ford F-350 diesel I nicknamed Excalibur and a series of friends as co-pilots. My journey finished with a triumphant return home the morning I drove into the mountains of Bayview and launched Dogsmile into Lake Pend Oreille.

I felt like I’d slayed a dragon. Here I was, with my beloved boat, back in Idaho where I’d first sailed nearly 20 years before. It was one of the greatest moments of my life.

Through all those miles, I’d had a chance to contemplate an important question.

What’s it all for? What is my purpose? I knew I had a gift for leading people in the outdoors, but I’d never really aligned that talent with those who needed it most.

And so I started Dogsmile Adventures, a non-profit that helps people discover healing and potential through sailing adventures. Our focus is on underserved communities like veterans, youth and those facing the challenges of addiction, domestic violence and physical or mental disabilities, but our programs are open to anyone who believes time on a sailboat will make them feel better.

And the name Dogsmile? When I was a kid, our neighbors had a springer spaniel named Pepper. She would run up to me, tail wagging, and bust out the biggest doggy grin with all her teeth showing. I ran, convinced she was going to bite me!

This happened over and over until the day my dad stopped me and said, "She's not mean. She's just really happy to see you." Pepper and I were pals after that and the seed was planted.

I learned at a very young age that skills lead to opportunities and opportunities lead to fulfillment. Sailing has been the perfect example of that truth. The more places I sail and people I meet, the better life gets. But that’s only a fraction of what sailing has done for me. The time spent in between, at sea, and often alone on deck, is where the real magic happens.

Those times inspire me to look within and discover who I am.

Sailing offers freedom, calm and control.

When cultivated, this deepens the connection between surroundings and soul. A dose of sailing is therapeutic. A lifetime of sailing is transcendent.

I work in sailing as others work in oils or clay. It is my true medium. I have been acutely aware of the power of the great outdoors for decades, but it never truly came together until I became a sailor. Sailing follows a perfect learning curve. It can be difficult at first, even mysterious; but it provides indescribable experiences to those who persevere and it takes a lifetime to master. You can practice it solo or in a group. It can take you all sorts of places. It’s not expensive if you’re willing to work for it. You don’t have to be an athlete, but it does inspire both physical and mental fitness.

SURROUNDINGS s I reflect back, I’ve been on this ride all my life: As a kid paddling a canoe for the first time in the Boundary Waters. Or my first night watch at sea, when the boat owner forgot to set his alarm and never relieved me at the helm.

I sailed by myself all night long, listening to Johnny Cash: Live at Folsom Prison on repeat.

I think of all of the clients, friends, guests, students and family members I’ve taken sailing. The way their eyes open a little wider the first time the sails engage and

the boat heels and accelerates. The way they look at me in that moment and the way I look back and smile, calming them, most of the time. The excited scream a little girl makes into her snorkel when she sees her first sea turtle. Winning the Bequia Easter Regatta with my mentors David and Vernice Cohen on board, and then the Bequia Single Hander all on my own a year later.

The healing potential that makes my fingers tingle every time I think about what I’ve pulled off and dream about what’s left to do.

Woods

Whether you seek knowledge, natural cures or unexpected new flavors, the lost art of foraging is making a comeback

Hazen Audel , I m walking through the wilds of North Idaho with a wild man.

As host of National Geographic’s Primal Survivor, Hazen Audel discovers food, medicine and supplies in strange plants and exotic places. Here, under the home pines of Farragut State Park, the pickings are slimmer. “To really survive at our latitude, you would need to range pretty far,” he says. “The indigenous cultures here traveled hundreds of miles to find food and also traded with other tribes.”

His roving eyes spy the Oregon grape. “That’s a juicy one right there,” he says as we nibble the tart fruit.

“These woods still have a lot of trailside snacks that are pretty nice.” We find and taste wild rose hips “good for vitamin C,” thimbleberries and spiny thistle “the root is crisp and nutritious, especially in spring.”

He points out yarrow, a powerful plant that soothes fever and toothache, and cattails, which have all kinds of edible parts depending on the season. He also says, if we looked hard enough, we could find and eat raw beetle grubs, an excellent source of protein.

Thankfully we do not find any.

“This serviceberry here is a very underappreciated plant,” he says. “You see them all the time. The indigenous people would mix serviceberry with meat and make pemmican. It was like the most incredible power bar.

These can be eaten like dried fruit, even after they are past their prime. If you were really lost out here that could mean the difference between life and death.” Some of his favorite delicacies are wild nettles “you crush up the spine and eat it raw, or cooked like spinach” and dandelions.

I have to eat it.

In college, he was infamous for living off of roadkill. “I made a lot of scenes by putting a dead deer in the back of my El Camino.” He grew weary of classrooms and lit off for the jungles he’d always dreamed of.

“I had a coffee can of money saved up from mowing lawns,” he says. “It bought me a plane ticket to Ecuador, a bag of rice and a bus ticket to the very end of the road. I was 19, pretty shy, and I didn’t know the language that well. The local kids accepted me as family. They showed me another side of the jungle. It totally opened my eyes.”

He marveled at the tribe’s ability to harvest and store food, a lost art.

“Most of our great-grandparents knew how to put food up for winter,” he says. “They knew where their food came from.” Hazen lives in a reclaimed barn built in the 1890s with a root cellar to store food. In spring and fall, he harvests mushrooms including morels, chanterelles, shiitakes and tooth fungi.

Roaming the outdoors with Hazen, I feel invigorated. He is a fascinating bridge between the past and one possible future of humankind. One more time, he cuts back into the woods like an animal on the scent of something. “This is old man’s beard,” he says. “Doesn’t really look or taste like food, but if you apply heat, it becomes like black licorice. It’s so good as a medicine.”

As we fist bump goodbye, his parting advice rings in my ears. “You don’t need all the latest and greatest gear to explore. Just grab a pair of flip flops and go!”

Keep your eyes open “Even while fetching water or building a shelter, be prepared to take advantage of an opportunity to collect food. Don't walk past something edible, and always be on the lookout for ways to build food security. Seasons change and tomorrow may not provide the opportunities you have today, so train yourself to take full advantage of what nature has to offer.”

Take what you can get “When you are relying on the forest for food, take advantage of everything it provides. Some of the most nutritionally important and fat-rich foods are exactly what people throw out. Intestines when washed and cooked are high in fat, as is the brain. One of my favorite delicacies is bone marrow. Frozen and mashed up with berries it makes a great forest ice cream.”

Enjoy the hunt “Fish can be gathered both actively and passively, using set lines and nets. That said, it's hard to beat the Edenic joy and peace that comes from sitting amongst a hillside of huckleberries, currents, thimbleberries, blueberries and lingonberries in a northern autumn.

It gives me a deep appreciation for the present moment and is one of my favorite simple joys.”

Make it a habit “The lessons you learn in nature are endless. But one of the most important ones is that long stints in nature can speak to us deeply and in a way the modern lifestyle can't. It is unspeakably valuable to equip yourself with the mentality and skill set that allows you to venture into the forest, and then to do so as often as possible. I hope to see you in the woods.”

Michael Skeeter Pilarski A lifelong student of plants, Michael started gardening in second grade.

As founder of the Friends of the Trees Society, his specialties include seed collecting, fruit picking, permaculture, agroforestry, ethnobotany, medicinal herbs and seeds, hoeing and wildcrafting. Find a reason to forage “It’s like a treasure hunt, and who doesn’t like finding treasures?

It satisfies our curiosity to learn what the plants are and we have a deeper understanding and bond with the place we live. If I can forage something instead of buying it, that saves money.”

Learn as you go “Wild foods and medicines are all around us; in urban, rural or wild landscapes. You just have to know the plants and their uses.

The best thing is to go on plant walks or harvesting expeditions with knowledgeable people and learn it in the field. I would also recommend that people buy some of the best books on foraging in their region and read and consult them.”

Eat your medicine “Some local plants which are both food and medicine include dandelion, red clover blossoms, hawthorn fruit, blue elderberry, Oregon grape, nettles, raspberry, rose and sumac. Some of the wild local medicinal plants are arnica, balsamroot, cottonwood buds, Pacific yew, devil’s club, pipsissewa, wild ginger, sarsaparilla, fireweed and goldenrod.”

Be a good forager “Mind your manners. Don’t trespass on land that is posted. Never harvest in state parks, Native American reservations or designated wilderness. Take only your fair share. Foraging should not hurt the resource and sustainability is key. Watch out for pollution, sprays, or places where the plants are contaminated. Learn all the poisonous plants of your area so you don’t make any mistakes.”

Learn where to look “We have several distinct ecosystems close to Coeur d’Alene. In the cedar forests you’ll find mushrooms, horsetail, wild ginger and the magical goldthread, our version of goldenseal. Douglas fir, lodgepole and ponderosa stands have lots of arnica and elderberry. The sage and grassland zones have balsamroot, kinnickinnic, fragrant sagebrush and giant mullein, and wetlands have birches, wild angelica, devil’s club and wild mint. Take a tea break “I love the giant cottonwood, and gather the fragrant leaves for a lung tonic tea, mixed with mint, eucalyptus and nettle leaves. The cottonwood’s sticky winter buds contain salicylates, relatives of aspirin, that make a lovely aromatic anti-inflammatory salve or oil for topical use. Stinging nettle is the most nutritious plant we have.

Taken in a tea, powdered in capsules or in a tincture, it is a strong decongestant ally for airborne allergens, bronchitis and the flu. I also make tea out of yarrow to fend off colds.”

Grow your own “Chamomile is easily grown and fun to gather; excellent for an upset stomach. Calendula is easy to grow and deep cleans the lymphatic system or combines well with cottonwood oil for a superior wound salve. California poppy has many of the same results as stronger poppies without the addictive and illegal qualities. It eases pain and anxiety in small doses and acute pain in strong doses.”

DUANE HAGADONE ONE-OF-A-KIND, AND DEFINITELY LARGER THAN LIFE. His vision, tenacity and old-fashioned hard work made Coeur d’Alene the destination it is today. He could have invested anywhere, and was invited to do so on numerous occasions, but he chose to put his money, his brains - and most of all, his heart - into the town he loved above all others.

Over the course of his long and industrious lifetime, he accomplished many things. He put together a thriving publishing group, took the risk to open an elegant hotel and golf course, created a complete marine division and designed and built restaurants, hotels and condo projects. Anyone who visits Coeur d’Alene, for time immemorial, will be treated to his vision, brought to bold life against a stunning backdrop of mountains, lake and sky.

World-class, iconic, extraordinary… these words describe each of his unique creations, but also described the man himself.

And yet, as we look back at the life and times of Duane B. Hagadone, one accomplishment rises above all the rest. His most important legacy is not the buildings, the businesses or the wealth he created for himself and many others.

HIS REAL GENIUS IS IN THE LIVES HE TOUCHED

As news of his passing spread through the North Idaho community and beyond, the response was overwhelming. From near and far, people expressed what Mr. Hagadone meant in their lives. The stories are heart-warming, humorous, and overwhelming in their sense of what this man meant to Coeur d’Alene.

He was a private man who never sought the limelight. Yet behind the scenes, he was always working at improvement. He made a point of leaving things better than he found them. But most of all, he left people better. He helped them be their best. As a boss, as a friend, as a family man, he cared deeply and always kept his word. More than anything, he loved sharing joy. If his guests, or his grandkids, were having a great time, there could be no better feeling in the world.

Because of his superb example, those around him wanted to be better. They wanted to do their best for the Boss, and they didn’t want to let him down.

As CdA Magazine celebrates his life, his accomplishments, and his legacy, we honor a man who knew how to make a person feel honored, respected and recognized; a man who taught us all how we can make our own corner of the world a better place.

A HAPPY AND HARDWORKING CHILDHOOD From an early age, little Duane Hagadone was attracted to the lake. He found his way there every chance he could; listening to the waves and watching the boats pass by. He also loved his mom’s flower garden and working on his dad’s lawn, keeping the grass green and neatly trimmed. He liked sports but he loved work. He was thrilled when he had saved enough from lawn jobs and paper routes to buy his first car, a 1931 Plymouth.

“Duane had a tremendous sense of humor and loved to have fun,” says his sister Joany. “He loved to tease me. There were always fun things he loved to do.

He’d bring home fireworks for the family, light them himself and run.”

A DEVASTATING LOSS AND A PROMISE Duane Hagadone was only 26 when his father, hero and best friend, Burl Hagadone, died of cancer. The young man had some big shoes to fill, in running a newspaper and taking care of his mom and sisters.

“The Scripps brothers who owned the newspaper said they’d had their eye on him for some time, and wanted him to be publisher,” says his wife, Lola Hagadone.

“He took on the challenge. He told those brothers, ‘If I fail at this, it won’t be for lack of trying.’ That says so much about the man.”

ALWAYS MAKING THINGS BETTER Duane Hagadone worked hard, and he worked long hours.

He’d begun the habit when he was first selling ads for The Coeur d’Alene Press, but now he turned work ethic into an art. He continued that newspaper’s success, then helped acquire and improve a series of other newspapers. He was highly organized, meticulous and detail-oriented.

“He always did everything first class,” says lifelong friend Jim Hawkins. “He learned everything from the bottom up, and understood how it operated before asking anyone else to do it. He was never afraid to work, and nobody ever worked any harder or longer than Duane Hagadone. He always knew the pulse of the industry.”

He also became an untiring booster for the City of Coeur d’Alene, and in 1959, was elected commodore of the Coeur d’Alene Unlimited Hydroplane Association.

Fittingly, that was the year a boat called Maverick won the Diamond Cup again.

Over the years, Duane found many ways to give back to the town he loved. Most of the causes in Coeur d’Alene have benefited from his generosity over the years, notably the Humane Society and Boys & Girls Club of Kootenai County. His family pays for a fireworks show to kick off the holidays every Christmas season.

CREATING SUCCESS, ONE PERSON AT A TIME “What truly made him a great person was his desire to see the people he surrounded himself with be successful,” says Bill Reagan, manager of The Coeur d’Alene Resort. “He truly cared about our staff and community. His personality was always positive and uplifting. And he strove to do the right thing, even when it wasn’t the simplest thing to do.”

“Duane Hagadone was driven, extremely hard-working, firm, fair and consistent,” says Jerry Jaeger, former president and co-owner, Hagadone Hospitality Co. “A perfectionist willing to put his money where his mouth was in keeping his empire strong and in tip-top shape. He was a great communicator and motivator. He inspired me to strive to do my best and I will always hold him in the highest esteem.”

“He cared about people, invested in people and demanded that his management staff value each and every member of his team as he did,” says Rick Powers. “He understood the importance of hiring, and he never settled. He said, ‘You can make it easy on yourself or hard on yourself as a manager. The difference is who you hire.’ And also, ‘It is amazing what can happen when you put the right person in the right position.”

He had a presence like no other when walking into a room, with dignity and respect from all. He was a great listener and was always interested in the well-being of those he employed. ROMANCE AND FAMILY TIME When Duane met the love of his life, Lola, it was a match made in heaven. Lola is a lovely person inside and out, and that was evident from their first date on March 7, 1979.

They would soon set sail on his Ericson 36 sailboat, and get married not long after.

“We dated all that first summer on the lake,” Lola says.

“Duane would tell me, ‘I’ve got a little space in my day. I’m having Berni get us some hors d’oeuvres from the hotel and some little vodka tonics.’ And we’d just sail, and sail and sail. It was wonderful.”

He purchased a log cabin in Casco Bay that was boat access only, and then he would commute to work every day in a series of intriguing craft including a Cigarette boat, a custom wood cruiser and even an amphibious car that the family named SeaBiscuit. He taught Lola and their kids, Brad, Todd, Dennis and Paige, how to drive boats.

“He was an excellent boat driver, even in the roughest of conditions,” son Brad says. “He always handled those difficult waters with confidence and grace. He took impeccable care of his stuff. That’s been ingrained in me.

We did not take off in that boat until it was shined to the nines. That thing would glow in the dark.”

“I remember Duane would enjoy driving people around at the lake place in the Amphicar, then without telling them what was about to happen, he’d drive right into the lake,” says Duane’s sister Joany. “He never ceased to get enjoyment from people’s reactions.”

“As a little kid, going over to town each Sunday to get the paper with Dad was so much fun,” says son Todd. “He was always Mister Safety. He wanted me to learn how to drive a boat in case of emergency. So he’d prop me up on phone books and taught me at age four or five.”

HOSPICE OF NORTH IDAHO Our staff, volunteers and Board of Directors remember Duane Hagadone as a man of vision, a dreamer of big dreams and a person of action. Our community has lost a powerful, positive leader and someone who brings to mind the reason Coeur d’Alene is listed in so many places as a top place to vacation and to live.

HE SAW THINGS OTHERS COULDN’T SEE “I came to Coeur d’Alene in 1979 to go to work as aviation director for this amazingly energetic man,” says pilot Al Goodwin. “From the very beginning of our relationship, his edict was: ‘Whatever we do, do it right. First class and quality always pays off in the long run.’

The thing that impressed me the most about him was his vision. He could stand back and look at something, and I would see one or two things, but he would see nine or ten. Duane and Lola always treated myself and my family not like employees but rather like part of their family. At the end of every trip there was always a ‘Thank you and nice trip’ expressed to the crew. It was the best corporate pilot job in the country working for the finest boss ever.”

“In 1983, we began the dream of being in the hospitality business when he acquired the North Shore hotel,” says John Barlow, construction manager. “The development of The Coeur d’Alene Resort was a mammoth endeavor, from design, to construction, to being fully operational by May 1, 1986. Duane wanted the project done by the spring of 1986, and it required the work to be completed in 17 months from start to finish. We did all that while keeping the existing hotel open for all but the last four months. That was an achievement. Mr. Hagadone taught me about attention to detail.

Once it gets into your DNA it’s there for good.”

“I admired his tenacity and appreciated his mentorship,” says Craig Brosenne, president of Hagadone Marine Group. “He inspired accountability. He didn’t micromanage. He set you up for success and helped you do your best. He never held a grudge and never looked back, only forward. For him, the windshield was a whole lot bigger than the rearview mirror.”

“Like so many others in this community, DBH has had a lasting impact on my life,” says John Young, owner of Young Construction.

“I admired that he was approachable, even though the results of his hard work certainly put him in that group that usually doesn’t allow people to reach out to them. He was a great man who stayed humble and cared for his people.”

“Mr. Hagadone was extremely creative,” says Rick Powers, director of food and beverage. “It showed in everything he did. He insisted that we deliver the sizzle in everything we do. Why settle for the ordinary when you can have the extraordinary? You saw it in everything he touched. He could have been a brilliant architect, product developer, designer or engineer.”

COEUR D’ALENE REGIONAL CHAMBER Duane Hagadone has been the Coeur d’Alene Regional Chamber’s number-one supporter and champion. Over the years, the lending of his capital and human resources has without a doubt contributed to the Chamber's success.

On numerous occasions, Mr. Hagadone graciously donated the use of his residences for Chamber fundraising events. In 2015, the Chamber held their Celebration in the Garden at Mr. Hagadone's estate on Lake Coeur d'Alene where he personally greeted each and every one as they stepped off the boat. He holds the title of being the one and only two-time consecutive Chairman of the Board. Mr. Hagadone was presented the Chamber's Citizen of the Year Award in 1988 and along with his wife Lola, again in 2015. Thank you, Mr. Hagadone, for your countless contributions to your and our Coeur d'Alene community.

My dad, Wayne Knudtsen, and Duane collaborated on a great many projects and enjoyed playing tennis together. And Duane was there for me during the last recession, when I was ready to call it quits. I asked if I could visit his office for some advice. “No, Eve,” he said. “I’m coming to yours instead.” Then that blue Suburban pulled up in front of our dealership. He took time to look through the business from one end to the other as only he knew how to do. He even suggested I was paying him, the Coeur d’Alene Press, too much, and renegotiated our advertising contract.

I followed every piece of advice he gave me, and things improved thanks to his incredible wisdom and caring ways. There’s no way I can ever repay what Duane Hagadone did for all of us, so I’ll just have to pay it forward instead.

The day we announced we were naming the new Coeur d’Alene center after his wife Lola, I watched how visibly touched and proud he was. It was a great day for him, Lola and our community. I will be sad to miss my lunches with Duane, but mostly I will be appreciative for his time and his desire to achieve. He was a man of his word and always paid up. I’ll always cherish our $1 bet he lost and remember him as a dear friend. He will be missed by many for years to come.

A MAN OF KINDNESS AND GENEROSITY “He had a very loving and kind side to him that most people didn’t see,” says his sister Joany. “He was very, very kind. He thought so much of others; not doing it for notoriety, but because he cared.”

“DBH had to be a great businessman to get where he’s at, but his kindness and caring of others was unbelievable,” says Craig Brosenne. “When we were in our worst-case scenario in business, his first question was always asking how that person is doing. His first thought was for his people.”

“He and I would play tennis in Portugal,” Al Goodwin says.

“These kids wanted to be the ball boys. So Duane asks the hotel manager, ‘How much should we tip them?’ This was 1981. The manager said to give them 50 cents. Duane gave each one of the kids a $10 bill. Their first question was, ‘Do you want to play again tomorrow?’”

CENTURY 21 In 1984, I was a young Realtor just six years in the business having coffee at the North Shore. The front ­page story of the CdA Press was “Hagadone plans to build a $60 million dollar Resort”. Forbes and three other large magazines wrote that The Resort was a poor investment and likely to fail. The early 1980s were economically bleak here, with high interest rates, unemployment at 21% and lumber, mining and tourism all down. Coeur d’Alene was just a sleepy little town that needed a serious boost.

His involvement in Jobs Plus helped more than 100 companies relocate here. So many businesses and developments would not be in place today if he had

not set the foundation. He was a visionary with a unique and fascinating mindset and an inspirational leader. He gave business owners the confidence and courage to do better. Most locals would not be where they are today without his influence.

He had a great passion for Coeur d’Alene. He told me stories about his early days as a paperboy and then selling advertising. He carried that same work ethic and passion from childhood throughout his life. Duane and Lola have done so much for all of us in this community. We will forever be indebted.

Goodbye to North Idaho’s visionary businessman

RECOGNIZED FOR HIS ACHIEVEMENTS “Duane Hagadone was the most creative genius of anyone I know,” says friend Harry S. Rinker, a real estate magnate.

“Whatever he turned his attention to, he achieved at an extremely high level, whether it was a home, a business or a yacht.”

Hagadone’s innovations in building his 205-foot Lady Lola earned Motor Yacht of the Year from Boat International, an award that was handed to Duane and Lola Hagadone by Prince Albert of Monaco himself. “It was a pretty big deal for a little guy from Idaho,” Hagadone liked to say.

In 2004, he was honored with the Horatio Alger Award by the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans.

In 2006, he was named Idaho Business Leader of the Year by Idaho State University. Over the years, untold thousands have worked for him, learning the value of work, punctuality and professionalism and carrying it forward in their own careers.

HIS LEGACY REMAINS STRONG All his life, despite his wealth, despite his enthusiasm for nice cars, planes, boats and homes, Duane Hagadone always came across as a humble, down-to-earth person. But he was a big deal.

He lived his life on a grand scale. He set high expectations for himself and others, and then went out and met them. He dreamed bigger than anyone else.

He wasn’t afraid to push the envelope in order to make something exceptional.

But at the same time, he saw the smallest of details, too. He was keenly aware of those around him. He knew when someone needed his help, and he gave it; quietly and generously. He bent down to pat a dog on the head. He loved the idea that his epic Gooey desserts would put a smile on a child’s face, that his famous floating green might make a golfer shout with triumph, that his boats and homes would bring delight to those he hosted there.

He was a man of dignity but also of humor, of realism but also enthusiasm, of great ability but also humility. He had incredible powers of listening, observation and analysis. He lived his life by a personal code of ethics and expected the same from others. He treated everyone with respect, whether they were the billionaire or the gardener. And they respected him in return.

One might be tempted to measure his wealth in net worth, in buildings and business, in things amassed and accomplished. But his real wealth was his reputation. It was the way his wife and his family looked at him adoringly. The way his managers treasured his wisdom. In everyone who knew they could count on the man’s handshake, and on his word.

Ultimately, there is a great deal to learn from Duane Hagadone and his life story as a self-made man and icon of hospitality, a story that will be told for a long time to come. It will be echoed in the lives of those he influenced, who will now go on to mentor and build other places and other lives. Now he can rest in peace, knowing he has left his family, his enterprises and his community in strong and capable hands.

For days after his departure, the flag on The Coeur d’Alene Resort front lawn was flown at half mast, a sign of mourning from his beloved town. But his memory remains, certainly in the city skyline, in the red geraniums, the blue lake and the green landscapes.

But most of all, Duane B. Hagadone, a legend in our time, will live long in our hearts.

MODERN GLASS It has been such an honor to work with Mr. Hagadone and his team for the past four decades. He held high expectations, he was always gracious in helping companies like ours rise to new challenges. Our company and our community are better today because of visionaries like Mr. Hagadone. While his passing marks the end of an era for our community, his legacy will live on through the many wonderful contributions that he made to the region.

was born and raised in Mullan, with the backcountry of Idaho and Montana out our back door. From the time I was a little boy, my dad, Earl Alexander, would get a hankering and the whole family would hike into some lake where dad would catch trout and my mother would fry them for breakfast.

When I was 13, my brother, Mike, and I talked our parents into letting us go to Copper Lake overnight. This was our first trip alone; a christening of sorts. We set out with our buddies Davey and Chad Flood. As we hiked, we passed a car on the trailhead that was oddly littered with papers, but we didn’t think much about it. We enjoyed catching pansized cutthroat and the freedom we had on our first trip without adults. In the morning, David Flood, Sr. showed

up at the lake to check on us, carrying a box of Lucky Charms cereal and a gallon of milk. Only later did we learn that the car had been the scene of a murder.

Since then, I’ve visited more than 100 mountain lakes, some of them many times. Last year alone, I made it to 25 lakes. Shoshone County has 50 alpine lakes, many in the southern part of the county in the Mallard Larkins Pioneer Area and Five Lakes Butte. And the ridge which runs from Wallace all the way to Lolo, Montana, has endless lakes.

Even if I spent every day in the backcountry for the rest of my life, it would be impossible to get to them all. Because of snow, the high alpine country doesn’t really open up until about the 4th of July and is only accessible until mid-October.

have reached these lakes or their trailheads by airplane, by helicopter when I was on the St. Joe Hotshots wildland fire crew, pack horses and mules, ATV, snowshoes and even one time with pack goats. Those crazy goats ate everything including the tent and headbutted my friend’s son. My favorite is my own two feet.

On the hardest hike of my life, my friends and I broke trail through snow, crossed perilous snow bridges, used a shotgun to shatter the ice for drinking water, and arrived back at the truck utterly exhausted. On another early trip, we ran completely out of food and had to shoot grouse, catch trout and find huckleberries so we could eat. It was the adventure of a lifetime.

After my 25-year law enforcement career with Shoshone County, I started working at Dave Smith Motors. Sundays and Thursdays were my days off. Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, my coworker Harris Lane and I began skiing different hills every Thursday.

After ski season, we began hiking into mountain lakes. We called it “Thrashing Thursday.'' When Harris took a new job and moved out of the area, Marty Gibson took his place, and he and I have been all over the place.

No matter how careful you are, sooner or later someone is going to get hurt and you had better be prepared for it. There is no ambulance waiting close by and even if you have access to a helicopter, such as Two Bear Air out of Kalispell, weather conditions may hamper them from getting you out. On one trip into the Bob Marshall Wilderness, my horse spooked and I had to bail off, rolling like a stuntman when I hit the ground, my ribs bruised by the 35mm camera I always carried. On another trip into the Gospel Hump Wilderness, Bob Stephens rolled his ATV off an embankment and tore his abdomen open on a blackened stump. He was found by a mushroom picker and flown out by helicopter for surgery and a full recovery. Having the right gear and emergency plan can make all the difference.

Mountain weather is spectacular and sometimes unforgiving. Joe Scott and I hiked into Fawn Lake, where we made camp and I had one of the best days of fishing in my life. You could literally catch a fish on every cast. Suddenly the sky changed and the birds quit chirping. The lake was like glass. It was the proverbial calm before the storm. Then the downpour arrived, along with the

loudest thunder I have ever heard. It was absolutely deafening.

There were lightning strikes all around us, with trees exploding and rocks coming off the ridge and into the lake. In a pretty adventurous life, I have never been that scared. I prayed myself to sleep, waking in the morning feeling blessed to see blue sky and sunshine. The hike out was hell, with the trail littered by blown-down trees. My wife, Keri, was so happy to see us return since they had ridden out the storm at home and been very worried about us.

I have seen some amazing things in the mountains. At Hoodoo Lake, I looked up from fishing to see three large yellowishcolored cubs and two full-grown bears getting water right where I had just been standing. The older bears had humps on their backs and to this day, I wonder if they were grizzlies. We hiked out in a hurry.

Of all the lakes, the one closest to my heart is on the IdahoMontana border, magical waters where you can catch both cutthroat trout and eastern brook. Keri and I renewed our wedding vows here in 2020, and it will forever be a special place. I still remember the blizzard there the day my dad and I fished. It was October 15th, my mom’s birthday, and fishing was good as long as the sun came out. It was bitter cold and I would have to put the tip of my rod in my mouth to get the ice off. I’m grateful I was able to get some excellent hikes in with my dad a few years back.

Now he is in his 80s, and although he would love to go with me, his memories will have to suffice. I was with my dad when I caught the biggest cutthroat of my life, a huge 6-pound red bellied cutthroat, which is still on my wall today.

Last year I revisited the crown jewel of mountain lakes, the Bighorn Crags. I was able to hike into 13 different lakes at elevations of 9,000-plus feet. The long distance to drive there, rugged terrain and lack of people really topped off a beautiful week. I caught my first golden trout, and look forward to continued trips there with Dean and Jill Cooper and their dog, Pippa. Keri is also gearing up for the next trip there.

I like the whole process, the anticipation of going on a new adventure and into a new place, along with the planning, packing and recon. My wife can attest to the many times she has caught me peering at maps. Once I arrive at a lake, chores include breaking and making camp, gathering firewood and definitely fishing. I pump water to fill my bottles and usually read some chapters in a novel I pack along. I take in the beauty before me. There is a one-of-a-kind smell out there that is indescribable. I have cherished thousands of beautiful sunrises and sunsets and taken many photos to remind me of these places when I return.

Like Keri always says, “Mitch goes on an epic adventure, comes back renewed and all is well in the world again. The high country fills his soul, and every time he returns he looks ten years younger.”

This is true. If I had a choice of 10 million dollars or never being able to go to these lakes and the high country again, I would instantly take the mountains over the money.

Keep it Small.

Try to buy your gear from local stores like Black Sheep Sporting Goods and TriState Outfitters. Gear these days is costly, but incredible.

The lightest gear costs more, but on long trips it’s worth it.

Don’t be cheap.

Don’t cheap out on gear that may save your life. Boots, clothing, tent, sleeping bag, air mattress, backpack, stove and freeze-dried meals are a must. When you supplement backpacker meals with fresh baked trout, you have a perfect combo.

Baking fish in aluminum foil with spices is not only tasty, but saves weight for the trip.

A backpack stove and water filtration are also a must. I’ve drunk out of creeks all of my life, but I wouldn’t take the chance of ruining a good trip with a stomach bug.

For fishing, stick to an ultralight casting rod with a small reel with 4lb test.

Having a full reel and being able to cast far is the key.

Rig a plastic torpedo-shaped bubble with a leader and fly, or use a swivel and a Fighting Fish or Rooster Tail lure.

“I fear that the permit system in use in other states could be implemented in the future. A permit to hike, a permit to have a fire, a permit to pick berries. This is not the Idaho I know and love. How can we stop a permit process? Police ourselves and act responsibly. Pack it in and pack it out. Don’t shoot at signage and trees.

Respect the beauty of these places for all to enjoy.”

In the digital age of tagging photos on social media, “Take only memories, leave only footprints” has taken on new meaning, too. There’s now a heartfelt movement to stop giving exact directions to beautiful places.

“We talk about leave-no-trace ethics, but we also need to make sure we are leaving no digital trace,” says Ben Read, backcountry hiker, climber and photographer. “We should no longer be publicly sharing the location of beautiful outdoor places. In this age of apps and information at our fingertips we’ve made it way too easy. The more information is available for people, the more they can find and potentially harm these places.

I would advise people not to use trail apps, and to avoid tagging their outdoor photos with any locations.”

How do you approach healthy eating?

Instead of worrying about how much so-called bad food is consumed in a day, I shift the focus toward reaching daily macronutrient targets for protein, carbs, fats and fiber. Once your meals are in balance, it’s easy to include those simple pleasures like ice cream or a cookie. You know what you’re doing most of the time supports your health, body composition, mood, energy and performance.

What are your favorite superfoods?

There isn’t a single magic food, just lots of good foods. Berries and apples are my go-to fruit, with bananas being my pre-workout quick carbs. I eat eggs, lean meat, non-fat Greek yogurt and low fat cottage cheese. These help keep inflammation away, offer fuel for training and help maintain body composition.

Most importantly, they offer satiety and the best chance for optimal health.

What’s a great meal for you?

My staple breakfast is a sourdough ham and egg sandwich topped with Laughing Cow cheese and avocado. Before I head in to train, I typically add a packet of oatmeal drizzled with PBFit. Both are extremely easy to make and offer a very balanced start to the day.

What can we all do to eat healthier?

Focus on habits. Anxiety is one of our biggest modern challenges, and healthy eating and movement are the best medicine. The more we can demonstrate discipline and control over our lives, the more grounded we feel, the happier we are and the healthier we become.

Start small and aim low. Instead of focusing on a bigger long-term goal, add small daily goals. Choose to eat just one treat a day (instead of zero or five), walk for 10 minutes or journal.

Know what you’re eating. Weighing and logging your food, even for a short period of time, offers a great deal of insight. It doesn’t have to be a lifelong task, but learning about the thing that you take part in every single day, multiple times a day, is time very well spent.

Make it an everyday lifestyle. There isn’t a finish line. It simply requires a daily commitment to choose our health and make ourselves a priority. Bring value to the foods you consume and to enjoying your mealtimes. Center your food habits around quality time and intention.

What are your own favorite superfoods?

What does healthy eating mean to you?

In the past, we’ve counted calories only to find that our energy crashed. Now, our best long-term results are with slow, healthy carbs, minimal sugar and clean, high-fat foods. We both follow a macro keto plan. At our food truck, we are a gluten-free kitchen and accommodate a variety of healthy eating styles, whether someone is a macro-counter, vegan, paleo, Whole30, keto, meal prepper, on a fitness plan or meal planner. Or simply someone who loves great food.

We love avocados. They are filling, taste wonderful, work well into recipes and are excellent for sustained energy. And we always feel great when we eat green foods like spinach and power greens.

What are some great meals you can recommend?

We strive to offer what we call fast fuel instead of fast food. We portion out the macros of carbs, proteins, fats and fiber and create plates around that.

Two favorites are our Southwest Macro Chicken and our Hero Steak Bowl, both filled with superfoods like broccoli, spinach and avocado.

What are your best tips for healthy eating?

Eat slow carbs. When eating carbs which are low on the glycemic index scale, or following keto eating, we feel healthier and have more energy, as well as fewer aches and pains because of reduced inflammation.

Surround yourself with like-minded people. It makes a big difference if those around you are also trying to follow a healthy eating plan.

Prep meals in advance. Time can be one of the biggest challenges to healthy eating. It’s difficult when mealtime comes around and there are no healthy options at hand. We have begun offering meal prepping for our clients on the go.

When they have fresh, macro-measured foods ready and convenient, they do a lot better at sticking to their plan. You can do this yourself by prepping food on the weekends, for example.

What does healthy eating mean to you?

Healthy eating is an essential part of who I am. I see the food that I put in my body as not only my fuel, but my energy. If I eat peaceful, nutrient-rich foods, I am more peaceful and health-rich as a result.

I am vegan and I choose to eat mostly unprocessed whole plant foods. I have been living this way for 10 years and will never go back to a standard American diet. It has completely changed my life for the better.

What are your own favorite superfoods and why?

I like spinach, berries, broccoli, nuts, whole grains, beans and sweet potatoes.

Many people think a superfood must be exotic, but in reality they are any plant food with high amounts of nutrients that can heal our bodies instead of doing damage. My favorite superfoods are blueberries, kale, walnuts and black beans. These are affordable, easy to get and simple to add to meals.

Your favorite food-on-the-go?

Hands down, it’s a smoothie bowl packed with berries, greens, nuts, seeds and whole grains. When I eat a smoothie bowl I am fueled and feel amazing for hours. They are delicious and the perfect meal any time of the day.

What’s your best advice for how to eat healthier?

Start small. Look for inspiration and resources, and allow the healthy living community to help you make the change.

Don’t beat yourself up. If you fail, keep going and keep looking for the right help and the right foods.

Begin with one healthy meal a day.

Start with a smoothie, a smoothie bowl or some oatmeal for breakfast. This way you can make changes without feeling overwhelmed. Once you feel like you can add another healthy meal, go for it. You are on your way to eating 100% healthy.

Give it time. Allow your taste buds and gut a chance to change. They are accustomed to different foods, and they will change as you change what you eat. You will start to love healthy food, I promise!

PILOT GARY TORONI

HELPS KEEP THE WORLD SAFE, ONE FLIGHT AT A TIME

“YOU CAN BE THE BEST PILOT IN THE WORLD ONE DAY, WITH THE BEST HANDS AND THE TAILWINDS BEHIND YOU, BUT TOMORROW MIGHT BRING JUST THE OPPOSITE. HUMILITY… LEARN IT AND EMBRACE IT!” When people meet Gary Toroni for the first time and ask what he does for a living, he usually gets one of two responses when he says “NASA research pilot.”

“There I am, standing there in my T-shirt and cowboy boots,” he says. “I can clearly see people either think ‘WOW’ or ‘Yeah, right’… It was the same look of confusion earlier in my career when I’d mention I was a high-altitude combat pilot and U.S. Air Force officer.”

The story gets even better. Gary is one of a very select group of pilots to fly the U-2, a top-secret reconnaissance airplane nicknamed “Dragon Lady.”

“At any time and anywhere in the world, a U-2 is out there performing some of the most advanced and complex intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance,” he says.

“Combat operations can also move to humanitarian relief at a moment's notice.

Flexibility in dynamic environments has allowed the U-2 to be unrivaled to this day.”

The U-2 pilot’s slogan, solum volamus, means “we fly alone.” Capable of cruising altitudes of more than 70,000 feet, the craft operates at the edge of space, above 99 percent of the Earth’s atmosphere where the outer limits of manned aircraft ends. Pilots must wear a full pressure suit. “To this day, the most common questions I’m asked, by people of all ages, are: ‘Can you float?’ and ‘How do you go to the bathroom?’” (Answers: No, Earth’s gravity is still in effect, and a pilot urinates through a series of valves and tubes attached to them. There’s no option for any bowel movement on a 10 to 13-hour mission so, “maintaining a proper diet, knowing your body’s schedule and prior mission meal planning are critical.”)

The U-2 is incredibly tricky to fly and to land, due to its handling characteristics at low altitude, bicycle-type landing gear, limited forward visibility and taildragger configuration. Because of this, a second U-2 pilot chases in a high-performance vehicle, assisting the pilot by providing radio inputs for altitude and runway alignment.

Once upon a time, after the U.S. sent 52 Tomahawk missiles into Syria, Gary was called to be the first aircraft overhead to assess. It was the classic scenario in which implications were unknown and courage met duty. He flew in, alone and unafraid, and the rest of what happened is strictly classified. “It was one of those moments when you try to calculate the unsolvable; when professionalism, humility, skill and a little luck come into play,” he says. “Okay, a lot of luck this time... Hail dragons!”

Now at NASA, he flies and teaches multiple advanced airframes, including the ER-2, a scientific platform much like the U-2.

“My day always starts with being a father and husband,” he says. “But by the time I walk out the door, I have to make sure any distractions can be accounted for, allowing myself to create focus and give clarity before stepping into any aircraft. My job is to always be prepared and to pilot the greatest machines in history. This requires you to contribute greatness in the way you fly, lead and listen to the team around you.”

From an early age, Gary was seeking and testing boundaries. He left high school and enlisted in the military, where something at Osan Air Base in Korea changed his life.

“There I was, holding a rifle in front of a giant hangar on one of the darkest nights imaginable,” he says. “As the sun began to break across the horizon, the hangar door opened and an entourage of engineers, medical staff and one man dressed in a spacesuit walked to an aircraft that looked

like it belonged in a sci-fi movie. He was integrated into the aircraft and the canopy was closed. The turbine began to spin, there was this insane rumble, and the wheel chocks were pulled. As this black aircraft taxied by, everyone threw a salute. He taxied away and I could still hear the idle rumble, then an enormous roar as the aircraft went almost vertical, climbing out of sight. ‘What was that thing?’ I asked in wonder. That was how I first laid eyes on the U-2.”

His life in Idaho revolves around service to family and youth sports, as well as the outdoors: hunting, skiing, sailing and guiding deepwater wreck dives. He is also creating Blue Ranch Aviation, an outreach experience for Idaho Vets and first responders, with flight training, backcountry experiences and “expanded horizons beyond the everyday.”

Gary is also a current United Airlines pilot. So the next time you fly the friendly skies, you may just be in some of the most capable hands in the business, the man with the quick grin and the call sign Thor, the pilot who has soared nearly into space, who knows what it feels like to fly alone.

A

t Cooper Cabinet and Woodworks, I design and build custom cabinetry, as well as learning how to grow an exploding business. I do it to provide a living for my family. And after more than 20 years of most all other aspects of carpentry, from framing, siding, finish carpentry and tile work, there’s no other work even close that I enjoy so much. Absolutely my favorite trade is custom cabinets and woodwork.

HOW HAS LIFE LED YOU HERE? There’s probably enough to fill a book. I’m sort of an eccentric, an introvert and a musical artist.

I’ve definitely experienced some rough patches on my journey and even wiped out a few times.

The list of mentors and influencers in my life that helped me see clearly and get back up would take hours to tell. First and foremost, I have to thank the Lord Jesus Christ who saved me and radically changed my life forever on June 14, 2011. WHAT IS YOUR MOTIVATION? My most important influence is my wife, Krista. She has motivated and supported me throughout. I wanted to quit my job and start a business and she said, “If it makes you happy, I believe you can do it.” Starting a business from scratch can be a financial burden, so I came up with the idea of selling our house and building a tiny home. She fully supported that idea too. In fact, we still live there with a dog, a two-year-old and another baby on the way. We have since cheated a little and built a small bunkhouse.

WHAT ARE YOUR GREATEST CHALLENGES AND GREATEST JOYS? My greatest challenge is wearing too many hats, including designer, builder, manufacturer, metal fabricator, wood worker, CNC operator, welder, packaging, marketing and web design.

My greatest joy is designing and prototyping. Once I get started on a design idea I think about it constantly: During morning coffee, on my walk to work, while sanding 40 seats at a time and when I’m lying in bed trying to fall asleep. Then I just have to figure out how to make it.

ADVICE FOR CHOOSING FURNISHINGS? Particularly for stools and chairs, pay close attention to heights.

Make sure you do the research on what the comfortable heights are for seating in relation to your tables and countertops.

Look for quality in the details like materials, joinery and finish. I prefer furniture that has very little hardware. The more hardware, the more joints there are that can start to wiggle loose.

WHAT DO YOU VALUE MOST ABOUT YOUR WORK? WHAT’S NEXT? It’s every bit as important to be happy at your job as it is to make a living. That happiness helps me to be the best dad and husband I can be. I look at life in chapters. In this one, I am creating a business by doing what I love. In the next chapter, I want to appreciate what I have done and move on by selling a successful business. Then, I have another crazy idea that I need to hopefully get my wife onboard with. I want to buy a sailboat and travel the world with our family. As a kid in Florida, we grew up sailing, boating, spearing fish and catching lobster. I miss the saltwater and would love to introduce my kids to it. My goal is to create a business where I can work remotely, whether that’s this business or maybe even a DIY YouTube channel. Our lives are all too short and there is so much to experience.

WENDYFERGUSON Three days a week, Wendy is the injury prevention coordinator for trauma services at Kootenai Health.

She analyzes the leading trauma-related mechanisms of injury for the region and builds prevention programs to address them. Two days a week, she works as a post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) recovery room nurse for surgical services, taking care of patients of all ages and backgrounds immediately after surgery. She says it’s fascinating to work in these two aspects of nursing, where she sees both the cause and effect of injuries that are often both preventable and life-changing.

“There is no other profession where you are with people during the best and the worst times of their life. Everyone has a story, sometimes tragic but often inspiring.

It makes you really appreciate the importance of your health and the time you have with your family. Seeing our community members well-educated on their health, implementing that knowledge into preventive measures and making changes in their lives for great outcomes brings me the greatest joy in my work. I know I’ve done my job when I watch people live through a life-changing event with a plan to move forward, or see children choosing to wear a helmet when they ride their bike. There’s simply no better feeling than making a positive impact in someone's life,” she says.

“Nurses are a key part of injury prevention in our community. Stop the Bleed, a class on traumatic bleeding control, takes 3-4 nurse instructors per class. Our helmet safety program takes 6-10 nurses. These programs could not be nearly as impactful or successful without their help or the support of our hospital. Nurses are some of the best people I have ever known. They are exceptional at thinking outside the box.

They are intelligent, witty, realistic, motivating and incredible leaders. They excel at any role they are assigned to and take those roles to greater and higher levels. I have never known a profession as adaptable, courageous and exceptional.”

“This past year was tough for all of us. We didn˙t know what the outcome was going to be or when the end was. It felt like we were all running a marathon with no finish line in sight. But we adapted. We led. We kept going and doing everything we could to care for our patients, to educate the community and to try and get through another unexpected outcome. Every nurse in every specialty had to step outside their comfort zone and step up to unprecedented challenges. And we did it. I feel honored to be a nurse.”

MARIANMARTIN During her 38-year emergency nursing career, Marian has worked in three different countries and in medium and large-sized hospital departments.

She says she feels fortunate to have spent the last few years working and living in beautiful Bonner County, where she is the nurse manager of the Bonner General Health emergency department, a critical access hospital. She also volunteers at community events such as Chafe 150 and The Festival at Sandpoint, and serves on the Bonner County EMS advisory board.

“At work, I ensure my team has what they need to provide excellent care. This includes assisting in emergencies, filling in when we are short-staffed, making sure they have eaten, providing emotional support when we have a tragic incident and offering my experience and expertise when they need advice. I always want them to know I care about them and have what they need to provide high-quality care.

When they have needs, I am there and ready to step in wherever I can. Every day in emergency nursing is different. The challenges we face, whether it be providing bedside care or ensuring the team has what they need to provide excellent care in our community, are what motivates me. I appreciate meeting patients and their families and helping ease their way through their emergencies.”

MARIAN WAS SELECTED AND HONORED AS THE FALL 2020 RECIPIENT OF THE DAISY AWARD FOR EXTRAORDINARY NURSES Here is the nomination as submitted by one of her co-workers:

Over the last seven months, our world has been rocked by COVID-19. But we also have dealt with many other difficult situations. This year, we have had four pediatric deaths, which were devastating to the staff and the patients’ families. I was present for three of these cases, and I was amazed

by Marian and her ability to support staff, care for families and keep the department going. I learned so much about how to interact and care for a grieving family by watching Marian.

She was able to guide the family and support them during their most challenging life event. After one of the recent child deaths, Marian instituted a memory box program.

The box includes a plaster imprint of the child’s hand, feet (or both), a lock of their hair, a card from the staff and a beautiful saying. Marian purchased the boxes by securing a donation and got them ordered right away. On 9/11/2020, we had to use our first box for a child who came to the ER and passed away. The box was made and presented to the family.

They were grateful for the memory of their child and for the compassion it showed. This was also very healing for the staff after this type of death. Marian Martin is a DAISY deserving nurse.

CASEY RICHARDSON After beginning her career in a busy emergency department in Denver, Casey came to Idaho for a new challenge.

She works as a nurse navigator at the Northwest Institute for Digestive Surgery, where she works in collaboration with digestive surgeons to coordinate the care of patients suffering with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). This is a progressive disease that can be treated with surgical correction. She provides nursing guidance through added education and support to surgical and non-surgical patients. In this role, she walks alongside patients as they steer through complex, innovative and challenging medical care.

“On a day-to-day basis, I connect with several patients who are looking for help to identify the cause of their symptoms and provide them with a pathway to obtain specific diagnostic tests necessary for proper evaluation. I perform innovative esophageal motility and pH testing that helps assist the surgeons to identify proper management of esophageal disease. A large role is educating patients daily on postoperative recovery, performing diagnostic tests, reviewing biopsy and test results and discussing disease specific patient questions.”

SHE CREATES ORDER FROM CHAOS, AND YOU CAN TOO. First, we go through a client’s closet together, after overcoming the same objection everyone has: “Oh my closet is the worst. It’s such a mess. You would freak out if you saw my clothes.”

We set aside clothes that don’t work anymore. Some favorite pieces can be altered. Then we shop for a few items, and pair the updated wardrobe in new ways. The edited clothes go to local charities and the new ones come from local boutiques, so it’s a great feeling all around.

You can expand your wardrobe just by making new outfits with what you already have. I really love taking someone shopping to show them how they can look and feel better in certain styles, just by adding a few items. Most people don’t realize their potential when it comes to dressing well.

I recommend a classic look. Try not to fall prey to all the trends of the season. I love a high-low look, which is when you mix more expensive staple pieces with more budget friendly pieces.

I am always shopping; looking at the new styles, just not buying unless it's in my budget.

Once you renew your closet, it’s much easier to get ready for the day. Another benefit is you will feel like you have a whole new wardrobe. Then when you shop, a style consultant like me will suggest colors and styles you’ve never worn before. You might be surprised with the results.

Decluttering is difficult and emotional but ultimately rewarding.

There is a positive mental shift after the space is edited and organized, a feeling of lightness and happiness. It really restores a sense of control, purpose and order to life. So many clients have continued to organize their home because it felt so good to get their closet renewed.

he drivers come from all over, the best of the best in this proud, loud, rough-and-tumble, drenched and dusty sport, with their boosted trucks, their Mad Max machines and big-tired buggies, ready to do battle.

The spectators arrive in RVs and campers eager to watch the carnage. They tow their home-built rigs to take a lap or two of their own. The pros and the amateurs, the drivers, crews, spotters and the supporters, all converge at Purcell Trench Ranch, an epic playground for these big burly rigs, with 60-inch-tires, military grade axles and engines gulping nitrous and revving with a roar all the way up to 1,000 ponies. Boat Buddies If you think people are passionate about their boats, you should meet their canine (and porcine) crew. Here are some of the boat critters of Coeur d’Alene and the people who provide their ride.

K

nown for her energetic personality, talkative nature and good looks, Scout is a 4-year-old female Alaskan Klee Kai. She lives an action-packed life, but her favorite sport of all is sailing.

Scout travels with Robin Briley and Jim Bolser in their busy career as videographers. Beginning as a small puppy, she learned to be a good member of the team, which meant riding for hours in the car, keeping quiet during video productions and traveling in-cabin on long-haul flights. She now has more than 80,000 air miles and the staff at Alaska Airlines know her by name. She has had adventures in many parts of America; riding an ATV, mountain biking (in a pack on Jim’s back), hiking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and boating.

“Scout has been in boats since she was a puppy, whether we're sailing, waterskiing, canoeing, kayaking or paddle boarding,” Robin says. “She loves it as long as she's with us.”

When they set sail from their cabin on Spirit Lake, Scout is typically the first one to jump into the boat. A perfect summer evening

Scout means motoring their 22-foot craft up to Velguth Island, then sailing home on the reliable land breeze that comes down from Mt. Spokane. While they motor, Scout stands up in the cockpit with her paws over the side and her nose straight up, catching scents in the evening air. She perks up at every passing duck, eagle or osprey.

“Usually, before and during sunset it's calm; not a breath of wind,” Jim says. “We tie up with friends’ boats, and Scout gets to greet all the gang. Klee Kai’s are talkers, and Scout has a very distinct greeting that’s somewhere between a howl and a yodel.

This is when Scout finds her favorite spot against the bulkhead and takes a nap as we sail quietly through the night. Besides the gorgeous sunsets, the nighttime sky never fails to impress, whether it's a full moon, shooting stars or the Perseid meteor shower. There's nothing better with a warm wind pushing you home.”

Spirit Lake would seem to be Scout’s favorite place in the world.

Instead of being first in the car, as she usually is, when it’s time to pack up and leave the lake, Scout sits like a statue in the backyard until the last possible second.

“Through all of our traveling, there’s nothing better than coming home to the Northwest,” Robin says. “It has taught us to always appreciate the beauty that is right in our own backyard. It’s really amazing with our crazy schedule that Scout was able to mold into our lifestyle, just perfectly. She turned out to be everything we could hope for in a dog and are looking forward to many more years of adventures, laughs and companionship with Scout, both on and off the water.”

H

ailey, a five-year-old boxer mastiff mix, and Maggie, a fouryear-old shepherd mix, came from a rescue organization as puppies to live with Erick and Carrie Montero. “The girls” enjoy car rides, errands and taking care of the horses. Hailey has even figured out how to open the locked front door so they don’t miss any fun.

But lake days are the best. When they hear the words, “Let’s go to the boat” they perk up their ears.

“Then they see us pull out the red boat cooler and chaos begins,” says Carrie, a speech therapist in acute care at Kootenai Health. “Wagging tails, excited whining, jumping up and down and running to the door. When we get there, the girls have a hard time waiting while we take the boat cover off because they are so excited. As we leave the dock, Hailey likes to supervise getting the fenders into the boat, checking each one as they come in.”

On the family’s Cobalt R30, El Secreto, the girls’ favorite spot is standing at the bow, with the wind in their faces and their ears flapping. Better than any car ride! They have matching life jackets, hot pink with white reflective polka dots, but they’ve gotten surefooted enough to go without them on all except rough days or after dark.

The couple keep their boat at Silver Beach Marina, where the employees offer dog treats and a scratch behind the ears. El Secreto rafts up with friends’ boats with other dogs so Hailey and Maggie get to see their canine friends, too.

“We love having the girls with us,” says Erick, a cardiothoracic surgeon at Kootenai Health.

“Even though it’s a few extra steps, it’s worth it. They love being on the boat. The excitement also wears them out, and there’s that saying, ‘A tired dog is a good dog.’ We really enjoy going on the boat in the late afternoon or for sunset, and there is a peace of mind that we are all together, that they aren’t sitting home alone and we don’t have to rush home to check on them. Whether it’s a quick ride around the lake or an all-day outing, it’s always a good time, but it never feels complete if Hailey and Maggie don’t come along.”

Maizie is smart, playful, curious and affectionate. She snuggles with her family and plays with her toys. What intrigued you about this part of our region's history?

“History is always defined by the powerful and wealthy; a quick survey of local street and school names proves that. With this novel I was more interested in what I think of as a place’s sub-history: the nameless regular people in old photographs, those who worked in the mines and lumber camps, in the saloons and brothels. These are the cold millions of the title. Spokane and the Coeur d’Alene mining district were thriving boomtowns for forty years and I wanted to capture the frenzy and fury of that period, especially during the wild labor disputes and free speech protests of 1909-1910.”

What was your research like?

“Spokane is still very much a turn-of-the-twentieth century city, a river-andrailroad town. I would wander downtown streets and, with the modern city around me, there felt like a kind of ghost town underneath. I visited a lot of the places featured in the novel, from Wallace to the Seattle waterfront, and spent time just walking the characters’ paths. But most of my research was spent in the Northwest Room of the public library or bent over old newspaper microfilm.

Then, because it’s a novel, eventually, the research becomes less important than the imagination, and after a while, I had to stop worrying about train schedules and just ‘wrote the story.’”

What was most fascinating or unexpected?

“There was plenty that surprised me, but the overall feeling was one of a region experiencing explosive growth and moving from frontier outpost to thriving modern city, with all the attendant issues and problems. The early degradation of the environment here is pretty stunning to our modern perceptions—one of the most alarming images was seeing the way trapdoors were built into the decks of bridges so that waste and garbage could more easily be dumped in the river and not just piled up on the shorelines.”

Which true-life characters struck a personal chord?

“Elizabeth Gurley Flynn certainly stuck with me. Here was a 19-year-old pregnant labor activist and suffragist going toe-to-toe with mining magnates, prosecutors and the police ten years before she even had the right to vote. She was really a singular character, passionate and driven, and with such charisma, that she triumphed through the sheer force of her personality. But there were others, too, the young labor lawyer Fred Moore and the police chief of Spokane, John Sullivan, who was a complicated figure—brutal toward the labor activists and itinerant workers of the time, but with a sense of honor, too.”

What was the most fun about writing this one?

“My favorite part of writing The Cold Millions was creating its larger-thanlife characters and getting to play in the forgotten bits of arcane language.

Researching the old vaudeville performers, the Pinkerton detectives, anarchists and Wobblies was like finding a seam of precious ore and then digging into it.”

What is most rewarding about creating a novel?

“My favorite part is always getting the finished novel, turning it over in my hands and putting it on the shelf. There is a real sense of completion, of I-did-that. Then I love hearing from readers. Anyone who has ever wanted to talk about a novel they just finished knows what it’s like being an author—you can’t wait to talk to someone about this story, to introduce them to the characters.”

The Inland Northwest is such a “great place to live and work. There are undiscovered stories here.

riginally from upstate New York, Deborah Cuyle lives in a 100-year-old haunted house in Wallace. After a near-death experience that injured her brain, she is now attuned to the paranormal.

“This book is a mixture of true ghost stories submitted from locals, fascinating history about the early Coeur d’Alene pioneers and the old buildings, combined with as many odd and fascinating details as I could cram in.”

What did you find most interesting about this book?

“Where do I start? I found that some of the early Coeur d’Alene pioneers became millionaires nearly overnight by accident, luck or hard work. I was also surprised by how many people have had personal paranormal experiences but are reluctant to talk about them for fear of ridicule. Once you start on the topic it's hard to shut people up. I think everyone is interested in the afterlife in one form or another.”

What was the research like?

“I spend thousands of hours researching during the year-plus it takes me to complete a book. I want to know every tiny detail of a city before I begin writing about it. I love interviewing locals, because I can discover tidbits you would never learn from old newspapers or books. After I do my research, I have about five hundred pages of notes. From there, I pull out the most eerie and fascinating details. Then I begin writing.”

What is the most fun about a project like this?

“I love going to the actual city and exploring the buildings that still exist, as well as places where a crime was once committed. My favorite part is discovering the link between ghost stories and real-life characters. We had a ghost who told a paranormal researcher his name. I researched that place and found that a man by that same name was crushed and killed by a train in that exact spot. Now that will send chills up your spine.”

SILENCING THOMAS KERL: THE ESPIONAGE ACT OF 1917 AND THE WAR AGAINST DISSENT

uring World War I, the governments of Great Britain and the United States engaged in propaganda campaigns across America to rally public support for the war, and citizens were prosecuted for alleged disloyalty. Thomas Kerl was a Coeur d’Alene resident who helped to develop the Fort Grounds neighborhood. This story of his life details the government's investigation which led to his trial in federal court.

Steve McCrea became fascinated with the story of Thomas Kerl over the years. Like Kerl, he worked as an attorney and also lived in the Fort Grounds area. The author served three terms on the Coeur d’Alene City Council and raised a family here. His grandfather moved to North Idaho in the 1890s, and his father landed on D-Day with the U.S. Army and retired to Hayden Lake as a full colonel.

What intrigued you most about Kerl’s story?

“Several things stood out: The improbable series of events that led to the involvement of the United States in the First World War; the Congressional hearings that exposed the greed of the arms industry and the economic motivations for war; the concerted propaganda effort by both the United States and Great Britain; and the investigation by the precursor of the FBI into Kerl’s private life.”

What was most difficult about compiling this account?

“The hardest part was trying to get a sense of Kerl from what others wrote about him. I had very little in the way of diaries and personal papers, although Kerl did document his travels in Europe as a young man. Much of the historical record about him is incomplete at best. I tried to limit my own opinions to let the reader interpret this man for themselves.”

What is most rewarding about this project?

“Tim Egan, in his book Breaking Blue, said it this way: ‘To change the content of years laid to rest—that in itself was a sensation even the best historians rarely experience.’ I believe my modest research project on Mr. Kerl managed to succeed in that respect. He was a world traveller who loved to enter into discussions with others.

His conviction in federal court was unjustified and seemed to represent a deviation from the tradition of freedom of speech and expression. He suffered consequences from that and I believe that this book puts his life in a different context, and perhaps redeems his character to some extent.”

There is always more to discover. Be “prepared to spend more time than you would ever believe.”

PRIVATE PARK, PUBLIC PARK: A STORY OF COEUR D’ALENE AND ITS FIRST PARK

he book tells the story of the genesis of Coeur d’Alene’s first public gathering space and places it in the context of the regional and national events of the time.

Jon Mueller’s family has been in Coeur d’Alene since 1910, when his grandfather managed the sawmill at the end of Third Street. He is an architect whose signature is evident in downtown Coeur d’Alene, including what is now McEuen Park. He is working on a book about the Inland Empire rail park system.

What is your personal fascination?

“It started with spring field days at the park as an elementary school kid, then later as a landscape architect considering the larger context of the national municipal parks movement as it began in the mid-19th century. Landscape architects are always interested in the story of place, and this is a place-based story.”

What did you find most interesting?

“It was intriguing to see the early pictures of people enjoying the park. The women in long dresses and the men in formal attire. It seemed to be the venue for a more refined, sophisticated form of social gathering because, Lord knows, Coeur d’Alene, at that time, had its fair share of rowdy, raucous bars and taverns where one could get into serious trouble if one wanted. At one point Coeur d'Alene was as wild and crazy as all the frontier towns that one reads about related to the settling of the West.”

What was the hardest part about the project?

“This was my first book. For both the story and the look and feel of the book, including the hard cover I wanted, I had a square peg for a round hole. On a project like this, there is one more picture you come across, one more anecdote to chase down. And after publication, any minor mistakes that emerge can make you crazy.”

What was the most rewarding part?

“The people who got it. Who loved the format, the look, the color. The people who say, ‘I am proud to have this on a coffee table in my house.’ Who understood the placement in the larger context of national events. That kind of feedback is affirming.”

Don’t be afraid to finish your book and let it simmer a bit. Be the “master of your own deadline. And surround yourself with good allies.”

Today, those who enjoy it do so in his debt. In this book, Scott, a dedicated environmentalist and conservationist who died in 2015 at age 87, created this book in praise of a place he loved. He was known as a smart lawyer with a persistent sense of humor who always made those around him laugh.

BOLD NEARLY ALL HER LIFE, SHE’S HAD A BRUSH IN HER HAND.

BLOSSOMS THE EXUBERANT VISIONS OF TOBY KEOUGH

She painted on notebooks, walls, anything else she could get hold of. She drew Bambi and butterflies on her high school walls (officially sanctioned, not a graffiti spree). She filled her children’s bedroom walls with lions, tigers and Japanese warriors.

The recent pandemic put her at home with time on her hands. So she took up the brush with renewed vigor. Then fate intervened. She needed surgery and wasn’t covered by health insurance. $22,000 was a lot of money for her and her husband Sean, a building contractor, especially with four kids.

“I’d painted a huge flower mural,” she says. “I wondered if I could sell it and help pay for the surgery. Well, someone bought it and rekindled my art career.”

Now her star is on the rise, and her large-scale renditions of poppies, peonies, nasturtiums and other bright blooms are exhibited at The Art Spirit and at Fern in Coeur d’Alene. Her work is also on display on Instagram @tobyrae and Facebook Toby Keough.

BIG, BOLD & HAPPY

“I started painting in 5th grade. Mom let me have full rein to paint the walls in my room. When my husband and I were a young married couple and bought a house 20 years ago, we didn’t have much money, so to decorate I would just keep painting. I could create the visual drama without the dollars.”

“I use acrylics on canvas, boards and walls. I’m still learning oils. The paintings are big, 8x4 feet for example. Some clients have said, ‘I don’t have enough space for something that big.’ And I say, ‘Don’t worry, just fill the entire space!’”

“When we had kids, I painted all their bedrooms. I did a jungle theme and a dinosaur scene that was a little too realistic. My little boy was afraid to go to bed at night! Since then I've painted a mural in every room in different ways as my mood and styles change. In my bedroom now I have flying cranes in an Asian hotel motif.”

“I have a flamboyant streak, which has bubbled into my art being big and bold and happy. I like colorful vintage clothes and my hair is a big curly mop. In high school I didn’t have the resources to buy name-brand clothes, so I went thrifting instead. I made my own style. I have a Mexican heritage through my grandmother, Gloria, and my love of color must come from her.

When I’m painting, I listen to disco and ‘70s music. Anything upbeat.”

“I’m always open to new friendships. My friend’s nickname for me is The Northwest Greeter, because I always want people to feel at home in the town I love. I try to brighten up someone's day with a kind word or gesture.

And I hope my outrageous outfits help bring a smile.”

“I really can paint for hours. During quarantine it really just came alive for me and stirred this passion for painting all over again. I posted some time lapses of my work to social media, and I was delighted to hear from people that it encouraged them to take up painting again. To me that’s the goal of art; to ignite that passion.”
