Publisher’s Message

As we welcome the refreshing breezes and vibrant blossoms of the season, I’m delighted to present the Summer/Fall 2024 edition of CdA Magazine.

Each issue is an ode to our region’s splendor, its people and the things that set our corner of the world apart. This edition continues that tradition, filled with stories celebrating our way of life and the incredible individuals who call this place home.

Our community spirit shines in our cover story on the spring planting of geraniums at The Coeur d’Alene Resort. This long-standing tradition is a testament to the collective effort that enhances our shared spaces with beauty and pride.

We also delve into the world of huckleberries, a regional treasure that epitomizes the wild spirit of our landscape. You can almost taste the unforgettable flavors as readers share their best recipes and picking tips.

Gardeners will be drawn to our feature on how to grow a beautiful outdoor garden without fences. Learn from the pros how to keep deer from eating your flower garden by landscaping with plants that they are more likely to leave alone.

Legends of the Land, we introduce Jack Nisbet, whose passion for North Idaho’s history and geology offers a captivating journey through our region’s past and present. Our profile of climbers Carl and Kelsie Rantzow, an adventurous father-daughter duo, embodies the spirit of exploration and the deep connections formed through shared challenges.

Sisterhood of the Spa, we meet the relatives who work together at The Coeur d’Alene Resort Spa to make this such a wonderful and relaxing destination. And in Waterfront Flavors, we take a tour of some of our favorite places to eat outdoors with a view.

There are many more stories waiting within these pages. As you explore this edition, I hope it inspires, delights and connects you more deeply with the incredible place we are fortunate to call home. Here’s to discovering the beauty and stories surrounding us.

Mitch & Keri Alexander

Grandma Mary’s Huckleberry Cake

3 cups thawed huckleberries

1¹/² cups baking margarine or butter

2¹/² cups sugar

4 eggs

4 cups flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1¹/² cups milk

3 teaspoons vanilla

2 tablespoons orange zest

Mix margarine or butter, sugar, eggs, flour and baking powder. Add the milk, vanilla and orange zest, mix well, then fold in the huckleberries. Pour into large cake pan, greased and floured. Mix topping ingredients (1 cup flour, 1 cup sugar, ¹/² cup butter and 1 teaspoon cinnamon) with pastry cutter. Sprinkle on top of the cake and bake for 45 minutes or more at 350˚F.

THIS RECIPE IS ORIGINALLY FROM THE KITCHEN OF DOROTHY DEAN, WHO RAN THE SPOKESMAN-REVIEW’S HOME ECONOMICS DEPARTMENT FROM 1935 TO 1983.

“This cake is even more delicious after it’s been frozen. Cut into serving size pieces, wrap well in saran wrap, place in freezer bag and freeze. Take out the night before, and enjoy with a cup of coffee for breakfast. Yummm!” ~ Keri Alexander

“My mom made that cake for me and my four siblings growing up. We would go into the woods outside Mullan, cut a few rounds of tamarack and catch a few trout for dinner. Then we all picked berries for cake and pie. A simple but lovely life it was.” ~ Mitch Alexander

“For me, picking berries is Zen-like. I just get in a groove, with my two hands picking into an old metal can looped through my belt. My senses are in overtime with the smell of the fresh berries, the cool mountain air blowing down on me and the sunrise close at hand. It's not work at all. It’s pure joy.”

~ Mitch Alexander

In North Idaho, mountain huckleberries are part

of our way of life.

Purple gold, we call them, a treasure that must be earned. So off into the mountains we go, our picking buckets handy, to that super secret spot. We taste a few as we go, their juicy tartness bursting on the tongue. But not too many, because some have to go into the bucket too. Soon the berries are piling up and our hands are stained purple. There might be a bear, getting their share of hucks, and we share the place but stay on opposite sides of the patch. Heading home with buckets full is a satisfying feeling. Then it's time to make our favorite huckleberry treats, from time-honored recipes passed down and shared among family and friends. Each bite reminds us of home.

Valerie Horton

Huckleberry Empanadas

¹/² cup shortening

3 cups flour

2 teaspoons baking powder

¹/² teaspoon salt

2 tablespoons of sugar

2 eggs

¹/² cup evaporated milk

Huckleberries

Mint leaves

Mix the pastry ingredients into dough (or if backpacking, just bring ready-made pie dough).

Cut the dough into circles, put whole and smashed huckleberries and broken mint leaves in the middle of the circle, fold and seal with a fork around the edges, or just press with your fingers. You can fry them in some oil on the stove, over the campfire, bake in the oven, or cover in foil and throw them into the fire!

“I feel like huckleberries are a prize for getting out into the mountains. I love spotting them, I love their tart flavor, I love the tediousness of collecting enough to make something with them, and I even love the risk of seeing a bear out there munching on the berries too.” ~ Valerie Horton

“I like these for breakfast with some coffee, but anytime is great. Best eaten right away. You can actually add any safe wild berry or herb. I've done honey and butter only, and it's still great.”

5 cups huckleberries

1¹/² cups sugar

5 tablespoons cornstarch

4 tablespoons tapioca

1 teaspoon grated lemon rind (fresh)

3 tablespoons butter

Pie shell

Mix ingredients well and pour into a pie shell. (If you prefer a tarter pie, use only ²/³ cup of sugar). Dot top of the mixture with 2 or 3 dabs of butter. Top off with a second pie shell. Crimp the two crusts together, making a decorative seal. Preheat oven to 450˚F. Place on middle shelf and bake for 15 minutes, then turn down to 350˚F and continue baking for 30-40 minutes or until filling starts to bubble over. When the crust is a light golden brown, remove and let cool until time to serve.

“I can't wait for the season each year to go picking huckleberries. It's so much fun to find a big patch full of fat berries. And I've been eating huckleberry pie since I was a kid. It was always a holiday dish at our house.” ~ James D. Villanpando

“If you have an unused coffee can laying around, it’s perfect for picking huckleberries. Put two holes in the can and run a string through it. Tie it around your waist and you have both hands free to pick.”

2 cups flour

1 teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon sugar

¹/² teaspoon baking soda

2 eggs

The night before, add 2 cups water, warmed to 107˚F, to the yeast and let sit 5 minutes. Add 2 cups flour and mix well. Cover and let sit in a warm spot overnight. In the morning, combine salt, sugar, baking soda (dissolved in 1 tablespoon water) and two eggs. Mix well. Turn griddle on a little higher than normal pancakes. For first-timers who are unsure where to find these berries, Schweitzer Mountain offers an easy way to get to the juiciest patches. Their huckleberry shuttle runs on a few select dates in late July and August, harvest depending.

“Look for ripe and dark purple berries, and be careful to respect the plant and environment around it. Keep a cooler in the truck to preserve them so you can keep picking. Cleaning is very important. Fill a bucket or wash tub with water and use a mesh strainer to pull a little at a time. Pour out on paper towels or even newspaper and pick out all stems and leaves. Lay out on baking sheets and freeze immediately. Then enjoy a wonderful winter of yummy purple gold.” ~ Lea Studt

Since She could walk, kelSie Rantzow haS been adventuRing with heR dad.

“She was always up for it, even as a really young kid,” Carl says. “I think the first trip was Hart Lake. She was three years old and she did the whole hike.”

As the trails have gotten steeper, their bond has become deeper. Together, they have gone on to climb some of the most interesting peaks in the Western Hemisphere.

When Kelsie was just five, they took their first daughter-and-dad trip up to Kokanee Glacier Cabin in British Columbia in the middle of winter.

“I remember the guy at the Canadian border called her mom, and wanted to make sure it was okay for her to be out in that kind of weather,” Carl says.

Kelsie recalls a childhood spent running around wild in the woods, with friends and her older sister, Lindsey.

“We were always outside, even in winter,” she says. “The whole family would be. We’d be splitting and stacking firewood and making a game out of it. Our mom would get us syrup to make snow cones.”

Carl explains the philosophy that led to free-range parenting, and later to climbing mountains together.

“lean into the unknown. You have to be willing to Spend time theRe and See wheRe it leadS.” -kelSie

“We all want to keep our kids safe, but I think a lot of people get wrapped up in the media, of all the bad stuff going on all over the world, and it all gets condensed in your TV or your phone, and people become afraid to take even a little bit of risk, to go out and try things,” he says.

“And I would counter that and say, there’s a risk to not doing those kinds of things. There are kids who get wrapped up in social media and video games. That could even be deadly for some kids. If I had a message, it would be to go out and experience life. Don’t be afraid to try new things, to take a little bit of risk.”

“It’s true,” Kelsie says. “If you don’t go out and take some of those risks, you’ll never learn risk management.”

Even in the midst of outdoor misadventures, she thrived on the hardships and the challenge of it all. When she was 11, they hiked along Miner’s Ridge in the Cascade Range which led over two mountain passes.

“We got worked pretty hard on that hike,” Kelsie says. “The whole thing was this beautiful sufferfest. We were chewed up by mosquitoes. There were mosquitoes falling off our face into our oatmeal as we were eating breakfast. And I loved the discomfort of it. I didn’t want to go home.”

The next summer they went up Mt. Adams. She didn’t have any climbing gear yet, so she just pieced together some from her dad’s stuff.

“There’s this one really steep part on Adams before you get to the false summit,” Carl says. “I remember she was just slamming her ice axe in, going ‘Whuh! Whuh! Whuh!’ Tough as could be. That really impressed me.”

It was their first significant summit together. She was just 12 years old, and she had discovered the call of the mountains.

In the next few summers, the two of them knocked out the rest of the Pacific Northwest volcanoes, including Glacier Peak, Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Baker and Mt. Rainier.

Today, they speak with fondness of some of the wild places they’ve seen, having climbed in British Columbia and South America. They recently returned from a trip to Ecuador where they reached the top of Mt. Chimborazo at 20,550 feet.

In person, both of them project a calm confidence, a level-headedness and positive energy. They also laugh a lot. The backcountry is a good place for quirky humor.

“On Chimborazo, we were so tired,” Kelsie says. “I just remember whispering to each other, ‘We have nothing left to give.’ And then the sun comes up, and starts to revive us, and then we have this perfect morning together on the summit.”

When you’re making good decisions, not all climbs lead to the summit. Just 800 vertical feet shy of Aconcagua, the highest peak in the Americas, they were forced to turn back. And they’ll never forget the crazy storm on Illiniza Norte in Ecuador.

“We were almost to the top and got into a lightning storm,” Carl says. “This graupel starts coming down, hard enough to cover our boots. It’s pouring off the rock like little waterfalls. Our ice axes are zinging, and there’s lightning and thunder at the same time, it’s so close.”

“It was one of those times you have to keep your spirits up, because you still have a lot of work ahead of you to get down the mountain,” Kelsie says.

“And nobody’s coming to get you,” Carl adds.

“I looked at him and said, ‘I really don’t want to be here right now,’” Kelsie says. “And he said, ‘Same’.”

As soon as the lightning and thunder moved on, they made a dash down that mountain. “We’d had enough adventure for one day,” Carl says.

A great deal of mountaineering simply comes down to grunt work, to putting one foot in front of the other, going uphill hour after hour under the weight of a 50-pound pack.

“You do have to enjoy the hard work, the monotony of the climb,” Carl says. “When you are in that zone you get a lot of epiphanies, a lot of insights. It’s an interesting mental state.”

And then come those priceless days in the mountains, bluebird days, where the living is easy, the weather is dreamy and you can see for miles.

“We were coming down off Vulture Glacier in the Wapta Traverse in BC,” Kelsie says. “It was cloudy and I wasn’t expecting anything special. Then as we started skiing down this glacier, all of a sudden the weather began to clear. Everything started opening up, more and more, and you could see these incredible peaks all around. It was one of those magical moments you never want to end.”

Carl’s fascination with the backcountry began as a young man, when he traded his motorcycle for some bulky camping gear and took an unforgettable trek through the Alaska wilderness.

“I began to discover these places that are so beautiful they are otherworldly,” he says. “It really drew me in.”

He met his wife, Roselie, at Kelly’s Grand Ole Opry, formerly a country music joint in Post Falls. “There was a promotional night, and they had searchlights in the sky, and I stepped out of my cabin and followed those lights and they took me right to Roselie,” he says.

For years he operated a landscaping company. But he consistently made family time outdoors a priority.

“He always held us to a high standard, and that inspired a lot of confidence in life,” says Kelsie, who works as a forester for the Bureau of Land Management. “He always told us we had it. And I always knew he had it.”

Over the years, they have helped each other develop the qualities that define a good climber, including the ability to stay calm, to observe and report, to plan, to navigate, to analyze risk.

“I can’t think of a better climbing partner,” Carl says. “She’s capable, and she has the grit. Great endurance and stamina. I definitely have trusted her with my life.”

What’s the next big project for these two? Kelsie would like to drag her dad back to Denali, which he climbed a few years ago when she was still in middle school. And they are planning a float trip down the Stikine, a spectacular river in northwestern BC.

“Just get out and see it,” Carl says. “So many people don’t know what’s right outside our back door. Once you see it you have a much greater appreciation for it. And if you can, give your support to local causes like Friends of Scotchman’s Peak and the Idaho Trails Association.”

“We’re so lucky to have public lands,” Kelsie says. “There’s a lot of democracy in the outdoors and wild places. We’re not getting any more of it. Take care of it, love it and experience it.”

PROFILE
Growing a garden that wildlife won't devour

arah Gates had a gorgeous flower garden.

But along with many other gardeners in the North Idaho countryside, she had a problem. Someone else loved those flowers too; in fact, they considered them very tasty. The neighborhood deer couldn’t wait for each new bloom. One by one, they devoured her flowers.

And so Sarah put up fences. Within those fences, she could plant all the flowering perennials her heart desired. It was lovely. But it still wasn’t the garden of her dreams.

What she really wanted was a garden where she could wander freely. One without fences. A more natural garden that would fit in with the land around it, but would still be left alone by the deer. That’s when she hired the experts at Country Girl Gardens to take on this significant challenge.

“Sarah asked us to help maintain the variety she loves, while giving her the ability to enjoy the garden without

fences,” says Trina Julian, founder of Country Girl Gardens.

Over the course of a year Trina and her team removed all the perennials that deer would eat, and replaced them with equally beautiful, albeit very different plants.

“Sarah understood that the new deer-resistant design would have fewer blossoms, but we were able to make up for the lack of blossoms by picking plants that had a variety of foliage, color and textures,” Trina says.

But when the fences came down, the critters came back.

“We definitely faced challenges with the deer during this transition phase,” Trina says.

Since the area had been off limits so long, as soon as the fence came down the deer were highly interested in the newly available area. They came in and checked out and tasted just about every plant Country Girl Gardens put in.

cdamagazine.com 41

rina says, “The deer would actually get mad at the plants they tasted and didn't like and they would pull them right out of the ground and toss them aside. This went on for weeks.”

She began to worry that the new garden wouldn't be able to take form if the deer wouldn't let up. But the gardeners kept moving forward. The crew worked in Sarah's garden weekly, and were diligent about putting any plants back in the ground that the deer had tossed aside. As the weeks went on the deer backed off and the new plants were able to grow.

Today, the garden thrives once again. It’s a beautiful retreat for humans, and a place that the deer no longer disturb.

“I love the results,” Sarah says. “I’m really happy with the way the garden now blends with the natural surroundings but still provides a visual paradise I can walk through anytime I want to.”

The story of Sarah’s garden is helpful to anyone who would like to brighten up their country home while keeping the deer at bay.

“No matter what plants you put in, the deer are curious and will often taste new plants, even if they are labeled deer resistant,” Trina says. “You have to be patient and try different things. Deer are habitual, so if you can keep them away for the first season they will likely find a new route and leave your garden alone in the future.”

She recommends beginning with these foolproof plants that thrive in North Idaho and resist deer:

Peonies are a surefire winner. They provide giant spring blossoms that make great bouquets. After the blooms are done you can cut them off and still have a beautiful green shrub that will remain throughout the year.

Trina’s

Garden Design Advice

“There is no right or wrong way to design with plants. This is why I was drawn to this profession in the first place. It's art. Each yard is a new palette and no two will be the same.”

“I recommend experimenting with your design. Another thing I love about plants is that they are forgiving. You can prune them, move them, and split them up to make more.”

“There are no hard and fast rules. Just put things together you like and move them if you decide you don't like it. If a plant is doing poorly in one area, move it to a new location and it might surprise you.”

rasses are highly deer resistant and come in many varieties. What they lack in blossoms they make up for in texture and visual variety. Try planting grasses of different colors, shapes and sizes. “I love the grasses that Trina chose,” Sarah says. “They really elevated the garden to the next level.”

Barberry shrubs have thorns, so deer are more likely to leave them alone. They are visually arresting, coming in reds and neon greens. Barberry shrubs can be shaped how you like or left natural, where they take on a fountain-like growth pattern.

Boxwoods are another great shrub for gardens with wildlife. They don't have blossoms, or color and shape variety, but they add a beautiful structure to the garden. You can prune them into hedges and line walkways with them for a more formal look or you can sprinkle them throughout to add year-round life, since they are evergreen.

Sage and lavender are both blooming perennials that deer will leave alone. The blossoms are blue and last most of the growing season. They are fragrant, which is what deters the deer.

Trina also suggests a handful of other tactics to steer the deer away from your beloved blossoms.

If you have dogs in your yard they will often keep the deer away. This works especially well in rural areas where your dog can roam your property at will.

Spend time in your garden. Deer seek places that lack humans. If you only live in the area part time it's more likely deer will ravage your plants. If you are here full time then spend as much time as you can in your garden.

Scarecrow sprinklers are activated by movement and do a fantastic job at keeping deer out.

Trina founded Country Girl Gardens in 2015. A University of Idaho graduate and passionate gardener, she wanted to share her love of gardening with others. She was also interested in helping her clients branch out beyond the normal palette of plants that are usually installed

in North Idaho landscapes. Trina was driven by her love of flowers, doing good for the planet and encouraging people to grow some of their own food.

“We serve today’s trailblazers by creating an artfully crafted extension of their lifestyle, elevating their outdoor living experience,” Trina says. She recently sold the business to new owners Justin and Heather Arts, who continue to carry out the vision.

“There's just something about gardens,” Trina says. “They are full of life and movement that inspire us as humans. All the senses are awakened when you're in a garden. You can see the beauty, smell the roses, touch the foliage and feel the dirt, hear the bees buzzing and birds chirping and taste what grows. I always love to catch a glimpse of a frog or butterfly in the garden. It really makes you appreciate how beautiful this life is.”

GETAWAY

Iwoke early, still cozy in my sleeping bag. The wind that had been raging in the night was gone. I heard the peaceful snores from my dad and my brother. The windows were tinged with the very faintest light.

I moved stealthily, pulling on clothes and tiptoeing down the stairs. As I pulled the door shut behind me and walked out into the chill pre-dawn, I felt that same thrill as always to be up before everyone else and exploring someplace new.

The way was well-marked and the trail well-built, and I moved uphill quickly through rocks and trees. As I went, I could see this was no ordinary trail. Someone had taken the care to inscribe a series of Bible verses into the rocks along the way. It was obvious this place had deep meaning to the builder.

Rising above the ordinary at Redemption Rock

The moon was still high in the sky. As I reached the top of the peak, I could see a brightening to the east. I sat quietly and watched the sun rise, filling the clouds with light.

I stood and stretched. The sun was spilling into the landscape now, painting mountains and lakes with golden light. From this lofty perspective, I could see Lake Coeur d’Alene, Hayden Lake, Hauser Lake, Liberty Lake and the Spokane River winding below.

I marveled at the trees surviving on this rocky ridge. Compact, their trunks deeply furred with moss, they showed the strength and direction of the prevailing winds up here. Last night we had seen and felt the weather move in, resulting in an epic sunset which lingered seemingly forever in the western sky.

The trees surviving on this rocky ridge were compact, their trunks deeply furred with moss, showing the strength and direction of the prevailing winds up here.

This morning was calm and the air was clear and fragrant. I watched the ravens float by at eye level and heard them talking to each other. I saw the branches glistening with dew. I felt the warmth of the early sun on my face.

It was a place you could sit in wonder for a long time. But the sun was climbing and I was eager to spend a little more time catching up with my dad and brother. I headed back down the trail.

For 30 years now, the three of us had accomplished something special - taking a yearly trip into the woods somewhere together. It began with backpacking into alpine lakes, then grew to include canoeing, sailing and mountain biking in some amazing places. But always with the goal of spending quality time with each other.

I came around a corner in the trail and there was the cabin, which looked a lot like some of the classic fire lookouts we’d visited on previous trips. As I walked in the door I smelled pancakes. Dad was making his famous breakfast and I was just in time.

My dad, my brother and I were on our annual trip, all of us grateful to be spending time outdoors together.

We sat at the wood table and ate ourselves silly, telling funny stories of past trips. There was the very first trip to Chimney Rock in Idaho, where we were convinced we were about to be eaten by a bear foraging noisily in the night, only to find in the trembling light of a flashlight that it was only a small pack rat.

Circuit in British Columbia. Biking the Trail of The Coeur

Ah the places we’d seen together. The hike down the Pacific coast from Ozette to La Push.

Sailing through the San Juan Islands. Camping in the Stuart Range in the Washington Cascades. Paddling and portaging through the Bowron Lake

Hiking beneath Mt. Rainier and cycling the road up Mt. Baker. Riding our bikes up Going-to-the-Sun Road at Glacier National Park, and cruising on the ferry up Stehekin Lake.

One year, due to busy schedules, we nearly had to cancel. But determination paid off and we kept the tradition alive, even if it was in a camping trailer parked in my parents’ driveway.

And now we were atop the world, eating our pancakes made on a wood stove and as happy as three men could be. I looked at their faces and felt the pull of so many good times. Together, for one more year, we’d managed to set aside all other obligations for a precious few days and make some new memories together.

Later that day, I had a chance to connect with our friendly host, Steve Wynecoop. His family owns and operates several lodging properties on the land. He envisioned Redemption Rock Tower as sort of a cross between a fancy treehouse and a fire lookout, a place to stay the night on the mountain at 4,600 feet.

“I’ve always loved that you can enjoy the sunrise in Idaho and the sunset in Washington from that same location.”
~ Steve Wynecoop

Naming the place Redemption, Steve says, is a way of honoring his family’s spiritual journey and the story of what it took to create this place. Those verses etched into the stone were his mother’s idea. “It’s a tribute and a thank you to our wonderful Creator,” he says.

His builder, Rick Rieben, helped haul up the materials to create the cozy and comfortable shelter, which is rated for hurricane-force winds and has 360-degree views. “I’ve always loved that you can enjoy the sunrise in Idaho and the sunset in Washington from that same location,” Steve says.

Redemption Rock Tower is open year-round. It’s a six-mile round trip hike to get there, steep in places, with 2,000 foot elevation gain. In the winter, guests don snowshoes and enjoy their own sparkling wonderland. There are roads for hiking, biking and ATVing and plentiful wildlife.

Steve’s main guest property, Redemption Rock Lodge, is designed as a getaway for large families and sleeps 20. Both the lodge and tower offer a unique experience to rent an entire mountain for private recreation. His newest addition, Redemption Rock Bear Stand, offers high end luxury accommodations with spectacular views.

As I returned to everyday life again, I thought about that sunset we’d shared. The ravens in the wind. Dad’s special pancakes.

I found myself immensely grateful for the time together, for the great outdoors and a special cabin in the clouds.

For these women, working together at The Coeur d’Alene Resort Spa is a family tradition.

From the very first time I walked into The Coeur d’Alene Resort Spa, I was impressed by the atmosphere I found. Not just the soothing flow of the waterfall and the pleasing scents of the essential oils. But the friendly energy, the smiles and the camaraderie between the women who work there, not only with each other but with their Guests.

One of the reasons for this positive energy, I’m convinced, has to do with the fact that many of these people have worked together for years. Interestingly, a number of them are actually related. Surely this must help explain the way each client is treated like family the moment they walk in the doors.

“Our spa team has a lot of experience and longevity,” says Berni Campbell, director of The Coeur d’Alene Resort Spa. “And what makes it even more incredible is the family ties here over the years. It makes for a special part of our work environment and the Guest experience.”

Over the years, these women and their stories have become part of the fabric of The Spa itself.

It’s an atmosphere of women leading women, of younger women looking up to those they admire and emulating their greatest traits. For these familycoworker combos, The Coeur d’Alene Resort Spa isn’t just a workplace, but a place that feels like home.

Heidi & Isabella Miejerink

Heidi first walked in the doors of The Coeur d’Alene Resort Spa 27 years ago.

With a newly minted degree in business administration from Lewis-Clark State College, she found work as The Spa supervisor. Along the way she found a passion for skin care, earned her esthetician license in 2005 and hasn’t looked back since.

Her daughter Isabella followed in her footsteps and has practiced esthetics at The Spa for the past eight years. Isabella started working here at the age of 16 as a spa locker room attendant. She attributes her passion for the spa industry to her mother.

“I’ve learned so much from her,” Isabella says. “And working together has strengthened our personal relationship as well.”

The mother-daughter duo say they appreciate the chance to work together in a calm, relaxing environment looking out over beautiful Lake Coeur d’Alene.

Ali Strohman & Jessie Frenc

When Jessie was 17 years old, she and her mom Ali started beauty school together.

Today, they form another mother-daughter duo who are beloved by their co-workers and Guests alike.

“I enjoy the chance to be artistic in such a fun, calming environment,” says Ali, a cosmetologist. “And I love the great group of people I get to work with - especially my daughter who I consider my best friend.”

“I really appreciate working with my mom,” says Jessie, a nail technician. “We can compare notes on new things in our industry. She is an amazing artist and a supportive mom and co-worker.”

Josie Booth, Dani & Amy Meeks

For Amy, the fun-loving front desk manager, working at The Spa is truly a family affair.

Her cousin worked here in the past, and recommended that Amy apply. In addition, her sister Josie Booth has worked seasonally at The Spa front desk.

And now, her sister-in-law Dani works at the front desk as well.

“I really love hospitality and customer service, and the atmosphere of The Spa is an added plus,” Dani says.

“We love our boss, Berni, as well as the rest of The Spa team,” Amy says. “And that makes it enjoyable to come to work every day.”

One challenge these ladies face in working together is that people often get them mixed up on the phone. But one thing Guests know for sure - whether you’re talking to Amy or Dani, you’re getting someone who’s friendly and helpful every time.

Ashley & Madison Wiedenhoff

Ashley is another inspiring example of personal and professional growth.

“I started out working the front desk 10 years ago and loved it here, so I went to nail school and have continued to grow with the company from there,” she says. Today, she is The Spa operations manager, where she can help mentor others.

“This is a wonderful place for individuals of all ages to try new things and grow their personal and professional passions,” she says.

Ashley’s younger sister Madison, encouraged by her sibling, recently joined The Spa as front desk receptionist and locker room attendant. Madison is eight years younger than her sister, and looks up to her in many ways.

“It’s so great working together,” Madison says. “And the other thing I love about being here at The Resort is meeting so many people from all over the world.”

NIGHT & DAY

after an epic remodel, this riverfront home has A BRAND NEW SOPHISTICATION

FINER LIVING
Story by David Kilmer | Photography by Quicksilver Studios

EVERY HOMEOWNER HAS WONDERED ABOUT IT.

What would it feel like to get a fresh slate? To take an existing home and just fix all the things that drive you mad? How hard could it be?

Go ahead, ask David Toms and Christy Reese. They’ll tell you there are no obstacles, only opportunities and you never back down from a challenge. That nothing should be done halfway. And if you’re lucky, they’ll tell you the story of how they undertook the mother of all remodels, in the height of a pandemic, and how they did most of it from 8,000 miles away without hardly stepping foot in the door.

A tall order to be sure. But an effort that paid off handsomely, with exactly the retirement home they had envisioned - a place to gather with family and friends and experience the simple pleasures. To relish in a collection of international art. A place to share and to enjoy. They began the job with a quirky, cramped design from the mid-90s. What they wanted instead was an open, modern space where everyday life could thrive.

With a talented - and understanding - design and build team, they knocked out the near-impossible, taking on one challenge after the next, finding materials in the midst of scarcity and insisting on the highest of standards throughout.

The result stands today as one of the finest examples of a remodel gone right. Their curb appeal increased a thousand-fold, turning a blase entrance into a properly welcoming portal. And once inside the doors, the home now opens up dramatically and merges with the river beyond.

David Toms has spent his life on the water, a New Zealander by birth and a Navy ship captain by trade. Fifteen years ago, he docked his ship in Seattle and hosted a reception for people who had a connection with New Zealand and key business executives . Wouldn’t you know it, a corporate executive at a large multinational company named Christy walked onto his flight deck and into his life.

For a while, they dated across oceans. And they began to talk about a future together. They wanted to live on the water and within an hour of ski mountains, and North Idaho turned out to be the right place. They bought a house overlooking the Spokane River.

“It was built in 1997, but looked right out of the 1980s,” David says. “It had seafoam green carpeting, terracotta tiles, these Grecian things on the walls, swooping drapes and recessed ceilings. We knew a lot was going to need to change.”

“This is our retirement home so we didn’t want a big place,” Christy says. “We wanted a comfortable place where people could come and have fun. We designed the house to be open, inviting and unpretentious. Kids running around in bathing suits and people cooking burgers.”

By the time the project began in earnest, they were both living in Singapore, which went into full lockdown during Covid-19. That meant they would be doing everything remotely, communicating their wishes to a team across the globe.

A DRAMATIC TRANSFORMATION

“There was a tremendous amount of back and forth,” David says. “And hundreds of hours spent on the details. We were everybody’s worst nightmare. We did all our research. We asked a lot of questions.”

“David and Christy came to that first meeting with the design team in person and armed with a very thorough and well-organized design book they had assembled to share their design styles and fixture preferences with us,” says interior designer Debbie Bravo. “From that point on, our team spent many hours with them on Zoom working through the details.”

She found her clients both had a strong sense of design, each in their own ways. “David leans more toward a modern, streamlined design aesthetic while Christy leans more toward a crisp and classic design aesthetic,” Debbie says. “It was clear from the beginning that this design solution was going to include some remarkable materials and details.”

In their world travels, the couple had become avid art collectors, with many pieces that would become part of the new home’s design.

That elegant, huge eye-catching chandelier on the deck? They found it in Singapore and brought it back as hand luggage. Same with the kitchen sink and faucet. “The customs agent said, ‘What’s in here?’” Christy says “And I said, ‘The kitchen sink.’” “And he said ‘For real?’ And I said, ‘For real!’”

The biggest change was on the main floor, where the project took a relatively small footprint and expanded it with massive bi-fold glass doors and a much larger deck. The result is a dramatic impression of the river and sky, framed by wood and metal. And instead of an afterthought, the deck is a main focal point, an extension of the home, and the place everyone wants to be.

A bi-fold window now leads from the deck into the kitchen, which was gutted and reborn. The diagonal spaces went away. The kitchen island now faces into the room where it belongs.

Cabinetmaker Skyler Grant did a phenomenal job here, turning tight spaces and blind corners into elegant solutions. Pull the corner cabinet and a clever arrangement of storage appears. Pull what looks like another cabinet nearby, and a hidden door opens to a walk-in pantry.

Throughout the job, Covid made life complicated by interrupting the usual supply chains. The fireplace and bathroom tile was something they found easily enough in a shop in Singapore. But David spent nearly a month working to locate a source for it in the USA.

Throughout the project, the owners, designer and architect as well as the builder, Creekside Construction, kept finding new challenges to solve. When the owners wanted to square off the hexagonal shaped stairway, all kinds of ducting was unexpectedly exposed. Today you’d never know.

One of the biggest fixes was finding more space for the master bathroom. The architect, Rex Anderson of Fusion Architecture, took out the linen closet and coat closet in order to do it - a masterful stroke. He also straightened out the master bedroom entrance, which had originally been built on yet another diagonal.

Paula Merk of Creekside Construction says, “We’re pleased with the end result, a mixture of modern updates and timeless finishes, along with pieces of the client's world travels that accentuated the originality of their style.

“Remodel projects can be more challenging than new construction, due to various unforeseen obstacles along the way, but we’ve found they are ultimately more rewarding because of the results.”

How did the owners maintain such a hands-on approach, especially from such a remote location? Christy was no stranger to solving complex issues. At every meeting, she took copious notes and sent them out to everyone involved. She created tons of lists. “I approached this remodel with a problem-solving mindset,” she says. “I figure that if I can fix something in the business world, we can fix it on a house.”

Meanwhile, David was examining the details of everything. He created a complex set of spreadsheets, with links to every specifications sheet for every material involved. A three-month lockdown gave him plenty of time. At every stage, he asked questions. What’s it going to cost - and what are the alternatives? The big shower door handles were $1,000 apiece. “Can we use towel bars turned vertical instead?” he asked. They could, and they did.

At the same time, this Type-A couple who are accustomed to being in command has a word of advice for the rest of us. “Don’t take yourself too seriously, and relax,” Christy says. “We got so worked up about certain things, and we don’t even notice them now.”

After months of Zoom meetings, thousands of decisions and dozens of obstacles overcome, the project is a grand success. The new design confidently departs from the 1990s and embraces a new era. With a welcoming style that matches its owners, it is full of light and air and art, tied together by timeless design.

“I’m extremely pleased with the result,” Debbie says. “Collectively, we all stuck with the big idea all the way through the process and to see it now, how it addresses their family’s needs and lifestyle is the most satisfying element. There’s nothing better than walking into a space you designed for someone else, to see how they have settled in, how they have furnished it, where they hung their artwork and just how they are living in it - and doing so with a contented smile on their face.”

A MIXTURE OF MODERN UPDATES & TIMELESS FINISHES

Sooner or later, the owners and guests alike gravitate toward that grand deck, sitting outside warmed by the sun, watching the boats go by on the river.

“The perfect day is getting up, sitting with a tea or coffee out here, completely serene and beautiful in the morning, watching the wildlife,” Christy says. “Then for the rest of the day, it’s everyone having fun, goofing around, boating, swimming and enjoying each other’s company. That’s what it’s all about.”

His dad founded Unique Wood Cabinets in 1981, two years before Skyler was born, and working in custom cabinetry has been a lifelong endeavor. “I learned on the job and my passion for the business grows every year.”

Things he’s built

Skyler started with birdhouses when he was eight years old. He's built guitars, tables, chess boards, a cradle for his babies and wooden art pieces. And his daughters have a top-notch lemonade stand.

Busy man

“I focus very hard on customer service regarding design and layout to best fit my clients’ needs, centered on efficiency, while maintaining a pleasing aesthetic. I personally handle all sales, design and quality control for every cabinet produced by my business.”

Best thing about the job

“I truly love working with people on design and layout, and seeing a project through from beginning to end. I also love working closely with my various teams of employees. I have a few employees that have been with the business since I was a child.”

Challenges solved on the Toms’ remodel

In their kitchen, Skyler designed a hidden pantry entrance door that looks like a cabinet face. It’s totally seamless and you would never know there’s a pantry hidden behind it. Also in the kitchen, outlets were required by code but didn’t look good on the countertop. He created custom panels in the cabinet face to accommodate the outlets. In the master bathroom, he made a beautiful floating cabinet with drawers, hidden drawers and doors that look like drawers.

Guiding principles

Skyler is known for diligence, loyalty, self-discipline, integrity, commitment and very hard work. “Having the duty and responsibility of running my father’s business and not only upholding his great reputation, but striving to elevate it higher, has sharpened and intensified these qualities in me. Not only as a team leader, but also as a friend, father, and husband.”

What’s next?

“Every year my goal for the business is to continue to innovate wherever I can, including computer technology, upgraded tooling and equipment and processes. Continuous innovation and increases in efficiencies, coupled with hard work from a great team, is the key to success. If I take care of my team and my customers, then my team and my customers will take care of me.”

"I

was born and bred in Idaho and I love this state.”

“I work relentlessly. I see my parents every week and I still ask my dad for business advice.

“My little girls come see me at work every couple of days and charm my customers and employees. I have deep rooted family values, such as I believe in sitting at the dinner table as a family every evening.”

Land of the Legends

HIKING THROUGH HISTORY WITH AUTHOR JACK NISBET

FEATURE
A walk with Jack Nisbet is a stroll through time itself.

His eyes peer into the past, and sometimes the very distant past.

Today we are walking a trail together in Q'emiln Park along the Spokane River on a hot, dry August day. When I look down from the cliff we are standing on, I see a ravine with a trickle of water. When Jack looks down, he sees figures in buckskins and expedition canoes.

“David Thompson comes up this river in the early 1800s, looking for cedar,” he says. “But the falls are too intense to get through. He’s heard from the Indians there is cedar in St. Maries, but he’s not understanding them, and they’re not understanding him. And so he turns around.”

The thought makes him break into a dry chuckle.

“When studying and writing about these kinds of encounters, I like confusion and misunderstanding,” he says. “It leads to drama.”

Jack’s interest in the intersection of the human and natural worlds came early, with his grandmother and his mother introducing him to birds. He came to the Inland Northwest as a young man in 1970 to build a cabin and work a mining claim. There, the editor of the Chewelah Independent asked him to write a natural history column.

“At that age, I thought identification of these birds and other things was the most important,” he says. “Turns out that was nothing. The real fun was going to interview someone. I got to meet some of the tribal women and hear their stories. And I kept hearing about David Thompson.”

He studied Thompson diligently and began retracing the footsteps of this fur agent and cartographer across the West. In 1994, 30 years after first discovering Thompson, he published a seminal work - Sources of the River: Tracking David Thompson Across Western North America.

by Photography by Quicksilver Studios
“It’s about seeing what formed the landscape…”

“As I got to know him, I got to understand the tribal people, and how they were essential to his story,” Jack says. “I met some of the descendants of the people who helped Thompson in his travels and taught him about the land.”

One thing about walking through the woods with Jack; always prepare to stop and observe the latest thing that’s caught his eye. Now he indicates the granite outcroppings with a wave of his hand.

“Downstream, Thompson sees basalt, but when he gets up here, to this boundary place, it’s all this metamorphic rock,” he says. “He’s interested in geology, and he recognizes some of the flood features coming down the Rathdrum Prairie, and sees the water disappearing at Spirit Lake and Twin Lakes, and he writes on his map Disappears, which I think is the first notice of the Ice Age floods in European culture.”

He believes Thompson was onto something big, something later validated by the work of J Harlen Bretz who showed that the erosion features throughout the Inland Northwest were caused by a series of massive floods from Lake Missoula.

“He didn’t do the numbers like Bretz did, but he understood. He felt them on the landscape. And that’s the idea, to be able to walk around and feel the landscape, to see what formed it and what continues to change it. Those are the ideas I try to work with both in writing and in walking.”

Jack points deep into the canyon, to tamaracks that by some estimates could be as old as 700 years. “That’s insane,” he says. “They were protected by the landscape, because they would have been so hard to log.”

Part of his fascination with Thompson comes from the way he spent seasons here, living side-by-side with the native people.

“Lewis and Clark pass through south of Lake Coeur d’Alene, but Thompson stays here, dealing with Kalispell, but also Coeur d’Alene, Spokane, Kootenai and Bitterroot Salish. He spends the winter, and that’s when he quits being obsessive about fur trading and has time to look around.”

“Even a generation is not long enough to absorb it all.”

Thompson studied the local speech, working to record the oral languages he heard into a written record.

“His native language was Welsh, which has a lot of the same sounds and glottal stops, so when he does a dictionary of Salish Language, he uses those sounds from Welsh,” Jack says. “He’s hearing things that a lot of white people can’t hear. If you hear Felix Aripa say Q'emiln, it doesn’t sound like the way we say it at all. So that means there’s always going to be something missing from trying to understand thousands and thousands of years of knowledge. It’s very dense information. A couple weeks or even a generation is not long enough to absorb it all.”

Again, Jack stops walking. He bends down to a plant with dried seed pods and rattles some out into his palm.

“This is a leopard lily or chocolate lily,” he says. “It was an important food source for the Coeur d’Alenes. They call it rice root. The corm is this delicious oily flavored root that you don't have to cook. It grows in abundance around the lake.”

He grins.

“You can see how it’s endless… You go out with them, the elders, and there’s no such thing as passing a plant. It usually involves a story, because that’s what helps you remember it, you hear it as a kid, and then you’re all set.”

An osprey flies overhead, and for Jack, it’s another lovely distraction.

“Nest building… it's the second nest of the season.”

He swivels his head around.

“If you look close you can see the remnants of cuts, and canals and header gates. I would love to find photos of Post Falls before anybody did anything to these falls. My wife and I spend a lot of time looking for these things. Historical paintings from the 1840s or 1850s.”

He finds it interesting to walk the landscape by intuition, going in the places it would be most logical to travel. When you do, he says, you will find where the geology went, where the native trails went, where the railroads and highways followed.

JACK RECOMMENDS THESE SELF-GUIDED NATURAL HISTORY TOURS

CHILCO SADDLE

A day-long hike from North Chilco to South Chilco works a sharp edge between the steep terrain and rich forest of the Little North Fork of the Coeur d’Alene River to the east and the open grasslands and Ice Age Flood gravels of Rathdrum Prairie to the west.

PACKSADDLE PEAK

Accessible by a steep but short trail, this spot overlooks Bernard Peak and the homestead of John and Carrie Leiberg—now Farragut State Park—on the south end of Lake Pend Oreille. A couple of hundred feet taller than any of the mountains around it, Packsaddle stood as John Leiberg’s favorite backyard venture.

HOBO CEDAR GROVE

Hidden near the divide between the St. Joe and St. Mary’s Rivers, these ancient trees provide a taste of what old-growth cedar in the interior rainforest really means.

STEVENS PEAK

This iconic summit offers views of the Selkirk, Cabinet, Coeur d’Alene and Bitterroot Ranges as well as alpine plants that John Leiberg collected in 1895.

SENEACQUOTEEN CROSSING

David Thompson used this ancient tribal crossing of the Pend Oreille River several times as he moved south to the Spokane country in 1811 and 1812. The tribal history here extends back thousands of years before that.

3893 N SCHREIBER WAY, CDA, ID · 208-667-5560 WWW.GINNOCONSTRUCTION.COM Construction is truly a service business. We approach every project with the same quality and attention to detail. cdamagazine.com 87

“I walk with these Native women who simply know their way through the landscape. You show them a map, and they are not really interested. They don’t use information that way. Instead, they will tell you about a big tree that has been there a very long time.”

He stops again and bends down.

“This is yampah, or wild carrot, and the Kalispell name for it is little finger,” he says. “You dig it up, and it looks like little baby fingers wrapped around each other, and you don’t have to cook it, you can eat it and it tastes fantastic. Once you become aware of these things, you see them everywhere. You just need your digging stick.”

His favorite way to share this knowledge these days is a live presentation side-by-side with a tribal member. He appears with Warren Seyler of the Spokane Tribe, and when Jack describes something from the David Thompson journals, Warren tells the tribal aspect of the story.

He tries to engage young people, not only about natural history, but the sense of hope for the future that he finds throughout nature.

“I talk to these younger people, and sometimes all they think about is that the planet is doomed, that we’ve ruined the world,” he says. “There’s a lot of anger and a lot of hopelessness. And I certainly feel all that, but because the explorers were here 200 years ago and saw that yampah we just saw, and collected it, and the tribal people told them they’d been digging it for thousands of years, and it’s still here, under difficult conditions, I just feel like we shouldn’t give up. That we’d better figure out a way to deal with it. And the way I see to deal with it is to expand our consciousness of time. Get into that tribal world, where instead of just one generation, you’re looking at multiple generations, and many multiples of generations, which leads to geological time, which leads to epochs.”

He describes writing as a kind of free travel. He sees writing about a new subject as piloting a boat on the wide open ocean or navigating through wilderness.

“Become aware and you see things everywhere.”

“Come back over and over, season after season…”

“The spirit of it is overpowering, and that’s a wonderful thing,” he says. “That’s what you’re aiming for. We are tiny, and whenever we are reminded of that, it helps. That’s what gives me strength to get up the next morning and do my work. I’ve been at this long enough to watch a lot of things go away, that hurt, that I thought I was really attached to, that were landmarks I’d be able to use as totems forever.”

He pauses and reflects.

“Things pass, all the time. Tribal people are excellent about thinking like that. David Thompson would ask Salish elders questions. What happens when you die? Where do you think you go? Sure, they have these wonderful stories, but they start from a place of peace about it, instead of a place of anxiety. Just walking around this place, looking at these things, brings me that peace. You come back, over and over, season after season after season, and gradually you get absorbed into it.”

One cure for the scourge of anxiety, he says, is simply going out into nature and finding a sense of timelessness.

“Every animal has a clock, every place and every plant has a clock,” he says.

“Be aware of that and find ways to slow your own clock down. If I can go out with a tribal woman who knows the plants, that’s what’s slowing my time down. Where she’s stopping at every plant. And we go just 50 feet in one afternoon. That’s what works for me.”

His latest project is a collection of essays about birds. While researching, he was amazed by how much birds have adapted in the few years since he began studying them as a wee lad with his grandmother.

“Birds have changed a ton since then,” he says. “There are a lot less of some kinds, and a lot more of other kinds. They are behaving differently than they did just a couple centuries ago. They just move and change as time goes on. And I take a lot of hope in that. Some of those birds may not be with us one generation, or 100 generations down the road. We might not be here either. But the universe will still go on. That’s giving me peace these days.”

WEDDING on the water

PROFILE
The Wilsons tie the knot in style Photos by Sydney Baye
ITheir story begins, like all great love stories, with a chance encounter.

t was June of 2019 and they were dental students at the University of Michigan. Haley was the new girl in town. Parker caught a glimpse of her across a crowded college bar and asked for an introduction.

The year went on and they remained friends, but only friends. But whenever they went out with a group of people, Parker always offered to walk Haley home. Then that fall, on the morning of the rivalry game between Michigan and Michigan State, he asked if she wanted to go to the tailgate together.

“We ended up spending the whole tailgate talking to each other, then getting takeout food to watch the game from Parker’s apartment,” she says. “We had this amazing connection and compatibility.”

The rest, as they say, is history.

Parker says, “From the beginning I was drawn to Haley’s sweet disposition and thoughtful nature. She’s a selfless person who is always looking out for others.” During Haley’s first trip to meet his parents, Parker’s father Jim cooked them dinner at his house. A couple weeks later he was pleasantly surprised to find a thank-you card written on Haley’s personal stationary in his mailbox. “He was sold, as was I,” Parker says.

“I was impressed by Parker’s disciplined nature,” Haley says. “Whether it be academics, fitness or our relationship, Parker shows unwavering discipline towards his passions.”

He founded a dental business club that became the second largest organization in the dental school in the first year, a testament to his personable nature and natural leadership. He works out every day, a fitness routine that keeps him balanced.

“Parker always said he wanted to do an Ironman triathlon, inspired by the race he grew up watching in his hometown of Coeur d’Alene,” Haley says. “I grew up watching my parents compete in Ironman races and I have an immense appreciation for what it takes.”

“I love Parker’s ambition, integrity and abilities. He can swim, bike, run, do dentistry, build a picture frame or even a bookshelf, park a car just about anywhere - he was a valet for many summers at The Resortski any terrain effortlessly, and above all is the most doting, devoted husband. He is my soulmate.” - Haley

With minimal experience in swimming, biking, or running, Parker registered to race Ironman Coeur d’Alene in the summer of 2021, and built a training plan that allowed him to finish one of the hottest (100°F) and highest attrition races in Ironman history. “Parker always does his research,” says his stepfather, Bill Reagan. “It’s one of his defining features.”

And then came the proposal. In November 2021, Parker gave her a card with a springtime travel itinerary to Napa Valley enclosed. Two friends would be joining them.

“I had an idea that a proposal might be in the works,” Haley says. “Parker was graduating that spring and moving to Dallas to start his surgery residency, and it was time to consider our long-term plans together.”

Once again, Parker had done his research, orchestrating a proposal in an intimate wine tasting room adorned with white roses, Haley’s favorite. After she said yes, they took a scenic road trip down the California coast to Laguna Beach, stopping for lunch in Carmel-by-the-Sea and driving through Big Sur, dreaming about their wedding and future together.

“That very day, I remember saying,” ‘So, can we have our wedding at The Coeur d’Alene Resort?’” Haley says. “I was so excited about getting married in Parker’s hometown and about having my friends and family see this incredible place. Lake Coeur d’Alene holds a special place in our love story.”

And indeed, during their time in town, the wedding guests sampled the best of what the area has to offer, including Lake Coeur d’Alene Cruises, seaplane excursions, golfing The Floating Green, hikes on Tubbs Hill and boat rides.

Their wedding day, August 26, 2023, dawned clear and bright under sunny skies. The couple exchanged their vows on a bridge over the infinity water feature at The Hagadone Event Center, surrounded by red geraniums, green pine trees and blue sparkling water.

Haley has played the violin since age six, so it was especially meaningful to have a string quartet accompany their ceremony processional and exit. Parker’s Uncle Rob, the officiant, surprised them by using the very same family Bible that Parker had used to oversee a funeral for one of his beloved pets as a little boy.

After the wedding reception, the couple exited through a tunnel of sparklers and boarded a sleek Coeur Custom wood boat to head back to The Coeur d’Alene Resort. “It was a dream come true,” Haley says.

The couple honeymooned in France and currently live in Dallas where they are raising a golden retriever named Lady, Haley’s wedding gift.

“We’ve made so many great memories here together,” Haley says. “So many days out on the lake, a night time ride on the sailing yacht Sizzler, Parker’s first Ironman race and swimming the Coeur d’Alene Crossing. It was only right that we share our most special day in Coeur d’Alene.”

“There is much to love about Haley. She is effortlessly thoughtful, exceptionally epathetic, and the type of person that lifts up everybody around her. She reins me in when I need it, while understanding when I need a dose of encourageent.

I am unbelievaby lucky to call her my wife.”

You might start your dining experience with the signature margarita and some house-made guacamole. Next, consider the Chilean Sea Bass with jasmine rice or the Tomato Coconut Stew. For a perfect finish, order the Chunky Monkey bread pudding with vanilla bean ice cream.

All sauces here are made from scratch and inspired by regional cuisines all over the globe. The mushrooms are locally sourced and brought in fresh twice a week. All cocktail mixes are made in house with fresh fruit juices and seasonings.

With multiple city parks along the river near Terraza, it’s a great place to go for a walk before or after dinner, or just stop in for happy hour from 2-5 p.m. It’s also a great spot for breakfast from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. where you can get a cocktail or mimosa with your meal.

Moose, deer and all sorts of waterfowl are all part of the Terraza experience, with two nesting pairs of bald eagles appearing just about every day.

Sit back, relax and enjoy the good life on the river.

“A great cocktail recipe should not only taste incredible, but it should also be a lot of fun simply to look at.”

THE BOATHOUSE

Tucked into a peaceful cove on the south shores of Hayden Lake, this is a destination worth finding.

If you arrive by boat, the dockhands will welcome you and help tie your boat up, which makes for a memorable experience in its own right. From the deck, you can see picturesque mountain views, beautiful hanging flower baskets and lakefront homes.

Start with the Bucket O’ Lake Water, a Mai Tai served with multiple straws for everyone to share. Then try the Idaho Queso, which features warm goat cheese and honey with an olive tapenade. The fish tacos are also a great call.

The Boathouse is known for warm hospitality and ice cold drinks. And every week in the summer, they celebrate Taco Tuesdays with live music.

It’s another great way to enjoy the outdoors on a fine summer afternoon.

“I enjoy seeing families and friends come together at The Boathouse, making memories, forging relationships and sharing their stories with us.”

THE SCIENCE OF

Sleep

A CONVERSATION WITH DR. WALT FAIRFAX

We know how important a good night’s sleep is for our health and well-being. Yet many of us have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep. Turns out it’s one of the biggest health problems of the civilized world. So what can we do to sleep more soundly? We asked Dr. Walt Fairfax, director of Kootenai Clinic Sleep Medicine, for some advice on how to catch more

HEALTH
s.
"BETTER SLEEP CAN LEAVE PEOPLE FEELING BETTER THAN THEY HAVE IN YEARS."

WHY DOES A GREAT NIGHT'S SLEEP FEEL SO GOOD?

“All animals sleep. It’s quite necessary for survival. Even fruit flies and worms sleep. It turns out sleep is important for a variety of interesting reasons. And some reasons we likely don’t even know yet. A lot of it is repair of what we’ve done during the day. Rebuilding of tissues, muscle and bones. Getting rid of metabolic byproducts. Processing memories in our brain and getting rid of memories we don’t need. Good sleep improves our immune system and reduces our risk of a number of medical problems.”

AND WHY DO WE FEEL SO BAD AFTER A POOR NIGHT'S SLEEP?

“When we lose sleep, we’ve lost the time we need to build, repair and refresh our brain. Without sound sleep, those processes have not happened. This might be because we are sick, in pain, interrupted by noise or by pets, or just haven’t given ourselves enough time to sleep. It’s interesting to note that when we have a general disruption in sleep to the whole community, such as a change in daylight savings time, the number of traffic accidents goes up and the number of heart attacks rise. A relatively minor disruption can cause major problems.”

HOW DO YOU DEFINE A GOOD NIGHT'S SLEEP?

“Although it’s somewhat variable, most people need eight hours or so of quality sleep. There is this stigma about sleeping longer and a kind of bravado about not needing sleep. That’s unfortunate. Next, it should be uninterrupted sleep. And that’s often hard to get. We have families, pets, electronic devices and other disruptions. Finally, as much as possible, it should be a stress-free sleep.”

TELL US ABOUT THE SLEEP LAB AND THE WORK YOU DO THERE.

“Kootenai Clinic Sleep Medicine has two locations. The first is the doctor’s office where we see patients on a daily basis and talk to them about their sleep issues. The second is our sleep laboratory where people actually come in and sleep while we test for respiratory and cardiac difficulties. We monitor oxygen levels, heart rate and body position. We also watch the electroencephalogram, looking at brain waves to determine the stage of sleep.

“Sleep apnea is the most common reason people come to see us. As people get older and/or heavier it tends to become worse.

Sleep apnea is a serious condition, because we know it’s linked to hypertension, stroke, cardiac issues, problems with the immune system and certain types of cancers. It’s also highly likely it’s involved with dementia.”

WHAT CAN WE ALL DO TO SLEEP BETTER AT NIGHT?

“The most important part is to prescribe for yourself a specific bedtime and waking time.

“Then, practice good sleep hygiene, which means making your bedroom environment the best possible place for sleep. It must be dark, quiet and cool. Our bodies need to cool down for sleep. Electric blankets or heavy blankets probably hinder this process. The easiest thing you can do is turn down your thermostat at night.

“We all have an internal clock called our circadian rhythm. If your room is not dark, your circadian rhythm doesn’t know it’s night out. Give your retinas dark at night, and expose them to morning light to reset your clock again.”

AND WHAT SHOULD WE AVOID?

“Light from a cell phone and other video devices is more stimulatory to and may disturb the circadian rhythm. Make a point to turn your phone off an hour before bedtime.

“Alcohol tends to increase deep sleep but inhibits REM. When alcohol wears off at night it may lead to awakenings and difficulty returning to sleep.

“Caffeine, energy drinks and cannabis can interrupt sleep patterns. Everyone responds differently, but it’s likely you shouldn’t have caffeine past mid-morning. If you find you need coffee or energy drinks all day long just to stay awake, then something else is wrong.

“If you are under stress, find a way to deal with it if you can. Stress alone can cause insomnia. And easing stress almost always helps people sleep better.”

WHAT ABOUT MEDICATIONS OR SUPPLEMENTS FOR SLEEP?

“Some people take over-the-counter meds such as benadryl. Some of these are fairly long-acting medications that can cause a groggy hangover the next day. Use of melatonin is a reasonable thing, because it’s a hormone we produce, as long as it’s used appropriately in conjunction with a standard bedtime. Take it at 9:30 p.m. if you’re going to bed at 10 p.m., for example. And don’t take it in the middle of the night. Other medications should be used with the advice of your medical provider.”

IF ONE WAKES UP IN THE EARLY MORNING HOURS AND HAS TROUBLE GOING BACK

TO

SLEEP, WHAT SHOULD THEY DO?

“William Dement, who invented sleep medicine, suggested that when awakened, instead of staring at the ceiling, one should get out of bed, go to a dimly lit room, have a cup of non-caffeinated tea or warm milk and read something that’s not stimulating. His suggestion was to read your refrigerator’s warranty manual.”

WHAT ARE YOUR OTHER INTERESTS IN LIFE?

“Being physically active is important to me. I’ve always been a runner, a cyclist and a skier. Since moving to Coeur d’Alene 12 years ago, I have taken up triathlons. I’ve been doing Ironman for the past seven years. I’ve found that exercise is really important for a great night’s sleep. But not just before bedtime. You get wired and you get hot. Late afternoon is okay, but give yourself time to cool down before you go to bed. Morning may be the best time for some people. And choose the right type of exercise that’s best for your body and that leaves you feeling good. If exercise leaves you in pain you won’t sleep well either.”

HOW DID YOU BECOME INTERESTED IN SLEEP AND WHY HAS THIS BEEN A GREAT CAREER?

“I started out in pulmonary critical care and chest medicine, and spent most of my career working in the ICU. I started studying sleep because a large portion of pulmonary and cardiac problems involve sleep apnea.

“In the ICU you have people who are already desperately ill and may have long term disabilities. In sleep medicine, we can address the problems at the beginning. If we can get it sorted out, we can leave them feeling better than they have in years, with decades of life ahead. That’s a very rewarding feeling.”

The steps are detailed and painstaking. First, the skin is removed from the animal and the hide is fleshed and salted. Knife work is very intricate in this process. The hide is then shipped to a tanner or tanned by the taxidermist. Once tanned, the hide is thinned again, the cartilage removed, and it is prepped for a form.

“The form is determined from key measurements we take of the specimen so the hunter can receive as identical a trophy as possible,” Adam says.

Glass eyes are placed onto the form, and clay is molded onto the styrofoam mannikin to replicate the features that were removed during the fleshing process. This might be eyelids, ear butts or any other features the animal had that the standard form does not replicate. If he’s dealing with an antlered specimen, he attaches the antlers to the mannikin with Bondo and screws.

Next, he puts plastic earliners into the ears. Then he applies glue to the form, lays the skin over the form and sews it all up. Lip skin, eyelid skin and nostril skin

are all tucked into the clay or the form, and these features help give the mount a realistic look.

At this point, the mount will dry for a week or two. Then Adam applies epoxy around the eyes and nose, lets it dry and then paints the skin and epoxy.

“Taxidermy is a very complex process, and there’s a lot of time between steps,” he says. “Tanneries, for example, have taken three months to over a year in some cases, and certain materials we use might have delays as well.”

Some of the other challenges he faces are incorrectly skinned hides, or lost hair on hides that needs replaced or repaired. And if a hunter doesn’t deliver the specimen to a taxidermist in reasonable fashion, bacteria will start to grow on the skin and the mount can be ruined before it even begins. “Speak with your taxidermist and inquire how he would like future animals skinned and timelines for drop off or freezing of the hide,” Adam advises.

He enjoys three distinctly different stages of the work. “The first is hearing

my customer retell the tale of the hunt to me, and the excitement and gratitude in their voice,” he says. “The second is when I'm putting the animal back together in all its glory and seeing the details come together. Third is watching my customers relive it all over as they walk into my shop and see what I've prepared for them. It doesn't get much better than that.”

One of the toughest challenges for a taxidermist, he says, is working on a cat. And that’s why it was particularly

satisfying to win 11 awards last year in the Idaho State Taxidermists competition. The specimen that caught everyone’s attention was a mountain lion Adam shot with a bow and arrow, and nicknamed Conifer.

“It just makes me want to work all the harder,” he says.

Outside work, he loves to fish, camp and take road trips with his wife Stephanie and son Gabriel. He enjoys grilling his harvest, and showing friends who don’t

have a taste for wild game that everything prepared right can be delicious. He offers taxidermy classes to pass along the secrets of the trade.

“More often than not, I know I put too many hours of my own time into a project, but I wouldn't have it any other way. I’d rather a client be temporarily sore at me for taking so long than have to look at a rushed poor quality mount on his wall. I’m replicating a memory and cherished feelings. That means something to me.”

“It’s a personal challenge to honor the animal and give my customer the best darn mount he's ever seen.”

CREATING HABITAT

One of Tim’s specialties is creating habitats for the mounts, whether it’s in a client’s trophy room or a commercial setting like Cabela’s. Some of these can become very elaborate, involving diverse terrain such as mountains, savannahs, tundras or high deserts. The detail can be incredible, down to the very types of rocks and plant life. “It’s not just bringing the animal back to life, but surrounding it

And then Cabelas and Bass Pro hired him to do the taxidermy for dozens of stores in North America. It was a real feather in his cap. It’s estimated that he has done more world record and top 10 animals than any other wildlife artist in the USA.

In 2021, Tim decided to move to the state of Idaho along with his whole family and build his dream home in the woods. “I’m changing the business model, downsizing immensely, taking the workload down, and rechallenging myself within the art form,” he says.

He plans to start a taxidermy school.

“The next chapter is teaching people this incredible art,” he says. “At its core, taxidermy is about the movement of skin. You have to study anatomy - bones, tendon and muscle, skin and fur. You have to understand how things attach and how they move. There’s this sculpting of the clay, where you work with ears and eyes. Now you’re starting to create expressions. That’s what takes it to the next level.”

Throughout his hunting career, he’s been awed by the complexity of nature.

“There are many facets,” he says. “You have the hunter and the hunted and survival. I’ve been able to watch how predators hunt prey. How keen they are. How they use the environment and camouflage. At the same time I’ve watched how the prey survive. The snowshoe rabbits which turn white in winter. It’s very interesting how nature works on both sides.”

He’s watched the family unit, the herd and the pride. He’s seen how they protect each other and interact. He’s seen how their bodies move. What happens when the weak meet the strong. What he’s learned in the wild brings value to the work.

“One thing I’ve understood above all is how these animals need us to survive.”

“Because of the increase in human populations, there is less living space for animals. That means conservation is the key. And animals can’t survive without it. When a hunter goes to Africa, meat from those animals feed the locals. And some of the money he spends helps the biologists and the conservation of the animal itself. This is very important to understand.”

Tim’s been married for 38 years to his high school sweetheart, Elsa. He’s known for being compassionate and friendly with a large personality. He enjoys making people laugh. At age 60, he’s happiest hanging out with his grandkids, going to sporting events, hunting and fishing and being out on the lake.

After all these years, it still makes his day when clients come in to pick up their trophy and marvel at the job well done. “When you deal with endangered or expensive animals, you have one shot at getting it mounted right,” he says. “I feel very fortunate to have that trust.”

FASCINATING FACTS ABOUT TAXIDERMY

Taxidermy is derived from the Greek words taxis and derma, meaning arrangement and skin. It’s a scientific art, requiring practitioners to study the anatomy of those animals to create a specimen that’s true to life.

Taxidermy was used on Captain James Cook’s expeditions to the South Pacific, where it was used to preserve animal specimens. The first kangaroo skin came on his ship to London in 1771. Bird specimens he carried can still be seen today.

When Captain John Hunter sent the first pelt and sketch of a platypus back to England in 1798, many assumed it was a hoax—that someone had sewn a duck’s bill to the coat of a beaver.

The first American taxidermy competition was put on by the American Society of Taxidermists in 1880. First place was awarded to taxidermist William Temple Hornaday’s A Fight in the Tree-Tops, which depicted two male Bornean orangutans fighting over a female.

In the specific terminology of taxidermy, a specimen is an exact replica of the animal as it appeared in the wild and a trophy might be a deer head mounted on the wall.

When the rhino that belonged to Louis XIV and Louis XV was stabbed to death by a revolutionary in 1793, its skin was varnished and stretched over a frame of wooden hoops. At that time, it was the largest animal to undergo a modern taxidermy process.

Geraniums brighten CdA all summer long

COMMUNITY

Every spring, the managers at The Coeur d’Alene Resort and its properties get their hands dirty.

In mid-May, on what has been dubbed Geranium Day, they work together to put thousands of tango red geraniums into the ground. These bright blossoms greet visitors all summer long as they have been doing since the 1980s when The Resort first opened its doors.

Red geraniums, it turns out, were the favorite flower of Beverly Hagadone, the mother of Duane Hagadone who founded The Resort. Mr. Hagadone, who has since passed away, began the tradition years ago as a way to honor his mother.

"Mr. Hagadone always loved that bright red color," says Bill Reagan, president of The Coeur d’Alene Resort. “And ever since it’s been a springtime tradition here.”

It would make sense that Geranium Day is usually the Tuesday following Mother’s Day. Every year, more than 32,000 geraniums arrive. The planting begins on Geranium Hill, the large flower bed in front of The Coeur d’Alene Resort's main entrance. Once the hill is painted red with blooms, the gardening continues at The Hagadone Event Center, The Coeur d’Alene Resort Golf Course, the Boardwalk Bridge, the Hagadone Corporation office, The Plaza Shops, the Coeur d’Alene Press, the Hagadone Marine Group entrance and Silver Beach Marina.

“It's a springtime tradition here.”

Live Recreate Where You

A Short History of the Geranium

Geraniums have been one of the most popular flowers in American gardens for over 200 years. Few plants offer such a wide variety of colors, scents and leaf patterns as do geraniums. Adding to their popularity is their outstanding performance in containers, both outdoors and indoors in a sunny window. They also thrive in outdoor beds, adding a wide variety of color throughout the growing season.

Discovered in South Africa, the first geranium plants quickly gained acceptance in England in the 17th century. But it wasn’t until Thomas Jefferson shipped the plant from France to America in 1786 that the plant gained popularity in American gardens.

For centuries, geraniums had to be grown from cuttings. Favorite varieties were passed down from generation to generation. However, in l962 breeders at

Pennsylvania State University developed the first commercially successful seed propagated geranium, Nittany Lion Red, a bright red geranium with single flowers. Four years later, Harris Seed Company developed the first F1 hybrid geranium from seed. Two years later PanAmerican Seed Company’s Carefree series went on to win the coveted All-America Selections (AAS) award.

Zonal (cutting propagated) geraniums are as popular as ever, as they have larger flowers and perform well in patio pots. Geraniums grown from seed are more often used for planting in flower beds and borders as their flowers are more numerous and they have a more branching growth habit. Seed geraniums also tend to be less expensive, lending themselves better to mass plantings.

There are three steps to the geraniumplanting process: drill, drop and toss. First, a hole is drilled in the dirt to fit the plant. Second, the geranium is dropped in position. Third, someone removes and tosses the plastic from the plant and then packs the dirt snugly around it to secure its position for the season.

Rick Powers, director of food and beverage with The Coeur d'Alene Resort, participated in his first Geranium Day 1985 and has watched it grow over the years. “It shows our amazing teamwork,” he says. “My staff says, tell me when to show up and what we need to do.”

“It brings everybody together,”

“You see everybody from our president to all of our different departments, everybody working together, having fun and elevating the Resort with this signature flower,” says Michelle Root, HR director of The Coeur d’Alene Resort.

She finds the sheer number of flowers interesting, and says it really puts into perspective the work the team puts into planting. And she finds it heartwarming that the tradition comes from the founder’s love for his mother.

“Aside from their beauty, that history really reminds you how family oriented our company is and how much we all

Stylin’ with a Smile

Steve LaTourette never imagined his hands would wield a pair of hairdressing shears. He’d held a bat as a first baseman at Rocky Mountain College, a shovel as a hard-rock miner in Butte, Montana and a rifle as a U.S. Army private in France.

But the day he walked into beauty school in 1963, he found a calling for life. For 60 years now, he’s made a living as a stylist and his shop on 4th Street has become a Coeur d’Alene landmark. At age 85 he’s still styling a few special clients.

It all started with Barbara Feldman, the actress who went on to play Agent 99 in Get Smart.

Before that breakout role, she appeared in an ad for Revlon’s hair tonic in which she lounged on an animal skin rug and purred into the camera, “Hey, you tigers out there.” Young Steve had seen the ad and been smitten.

“Steve, your girlfriend’s on,” said his mom one evening. She was watching The Ed Sullivan Show and Barbara Feldman was on the screen. Steve was in his early 20s, back home from the Army and trying to figure out what to do next.

Steve took a look. “No, her hair’s too short,” he said. “They ruined her bangs. They’re terrible.”

Hair’ has snipped and clipped his way into CdA’s heart

PROFILE

“That’s what you should be, a hairdresser!” his mom said. “You have a good personality and you like people, you’ll be great.” So she booked him into cosmetology school.

“I was reluctant to be a hairdresser in a mining town,” Steve says. “But I didn’t know what else to do. Mom didn’t like me working in the mines. Dad was a mining superintendent there, and he finally pulled my card so I couldn’t work any more.”

Steve had to put $10 down up front on his $150 tuition, and he had to buy some supplies including a barber’s jacket and some styling tools.

“There are moments in your life that you wonder where they will take you,”

he says. “That day I had my white jacket on, my little kit under my arm, and I went into that beauty school thinking this was the dumbest thing I’d ever done. I walked in that door, and I’ve never looked back. There’s never been a day when I didn't want to go to work. It’s become who I am.”

When he started styling, he charged $1.75 for a haircut and $2.50 for a shampoo roller set.

The big look was the Artichoke, a spiky bouffant famously created for Liz Taylor

by the legendary stylist Alexandre de Paris, known as Alexandre the Great by his celebrity clients. When Taylor fell dangerously ill while filming Cleopatra and her husband Eddie Fisher asked what would cheer her up more than anything in the world, she said, “Bring me Alexandre!”

And so LaTourette, by now working in Las Vegas, learned the art of the Artichoke. He also learned how to craft the Beehive worn by The Ronettes, Audrey Hepburn and Barbra Streisand, the Flipped Bob made famous by Jackie Kennedy and the Bombshell sported by Raquel Welch and Brigitte Bardot.

In 1976, he watched Dorothy Hamill skate to Olympic gold. “Right then, I said to myself, ‘I gotta find that haircut, because everyone’s gonna want it’,” he says. “The first five customers through the door the next day said, ‘I don’t know if you watched the Olympics last night…’” He figured out how to create the Wedge, Hamill’s bob-length cut which became a huge trend in the 1970s (and again in the 1990s when Victoria Beckham embraced the look).

When Farrah Fawcett posed for a swimsuit campaign in 1976, wearing a red swimsuit and the Fawcett Flip, her bouncy, feathered style became a must-have. In the ‘80s, Steve mastered perms to match Whitney Houston, Brooke Shields and Meg Ryan. By the ‘90s, countless women wanted the Rachel cut inspired by Jennifer Aniston. And so it went.

What’s Steve’s secret to a good haircut? “Communication. There’s a big difference between what I think is short and what you think is short.”

It helps that he is funny, witty and personable and genuinely appreciates people. “At my shop, we laugh a lot,” he says.

For years, motorists have seen the silly slogans on his reader board such as WE RUN WITH SCISSORS. His car sports vanity plates his wife Kathy got him that read MR HAIR.

He and Kathy met at an event nearly 50 years ago. “I was dressed in a white leisure suit with a big ‘fro and she had big hair,” he says.

“We just hit it off. She’s the best thing that ever happened to me.”

The most important influence on his career was Mary Kawakami, a Japanese woman who owned a beauty college in Utah and offered advanced training. Back in the ‘60s, she charged $500 a week which Steve’s family could barely afford. “Those were pretty lean times,” he

says. “I went down with a suitcase with eight cans of Franco-American spaghetti and a fork. I would sit on the edge of my hotel bed and eat a can of spaghetti for dinner every night.”

Mary taught him what she knew, hired him to work for her and recommended him for a great job when he left. He kept in touch with her until she passed away last year at the age of 110.

“A truly remarkable woman,” he says. “Everything I have I owe to her. Not just what I do with my fingers but how to treat my customers.”

In turn, he has been a benefit to others. Mandy McCullough, who Steve mentored, went on to a high-profile

career. When accepting an industry award, she said, “All of us have our hair heroes, and my hair hero is Steve LaTourrete in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.”

Today, he looks back fondly at a career he never thought he’d enjoy.

Over the years many of Coeur d’Alene’s leading citizens have come to Steve for not only a haircut, but for a confidential ear, a word of advice or just to hear his booming laugh.

“I’ve been blessed,” he says. “This town has been so good to me.”

ARTS & CULTURE

Dynamic Duo

It’s one thing to have an artistic eye and the inspiration to match. It’s quite another to build an existence where ideas can thrive, where despite all the demands and distractions of everyday life, fine art is conceived, created and shared. Here’s how these two dreamers have made the impossible come true.

labor of love

Both artists work at other things throughout their day, Jenny as a mom and volunteer and Christian as a residential designer. But whenever they can find a spare second, they dive back into the drive to create, which sometimes takes them late into the night.

Their art is distinctly different from each other’s. She paints in bold acrylic - perhaps a trout leaping through water or a bear lumbering through snow. His visions, executed in wood and epoxy, are abstract, yet comfortingly familiar.

As with all good art, their work offers a glimpse into another world.

And a sense of amazement, with all the distractions and complications of modern life, that truly original art - by human hands and human brains - still gets made at all.

To make it happen takes a disciplined and dedicated approach, along with flexibility and a willingness to juggle a lot of balls. Jenny and Christian, who dreamed early and dreamed big, have managed to do all of those things and make their dreams come true.

The two met in an art class at UC Davis, where their first assignment was to paint their self-portrait on the cover of their notebooks. “He turned around to tell me how amazing mine was,” Jenny says. “Before you know it, we were inseparable.”

They spent their young married days making plans. One day they would own their own art business, where he would design houses, sculpt and make furniture and she would paint.

“Instead, the next 20 years gave us five beautiful children and a crazy, busy family life that took our dreams for a glorious detour,” she says.

Today, they’ve come full circle and made all those early ideas a beautiful reality. In their home studio near Sandpoint, they make art while they raise four boys, Chase, Ollie, Ryder and Shane. (Their daughter Asia has grown and flown the coop.) A cat and a dog are part of the family scene, which is never lacking for action.

140 cdamagazine.com

“I remind myself to just create art that I like. It’s hard to be creative when you’re too caught up in what people might think of it. And sometimes the best thing you can do is walk away for a while. The idea will be there tomorrow.” -Christian

“Our home has been described as a joyous kaboom,” Jenny says. “We live in happy chaos and there’s always something going on, whether it’s crafts being created, cooks in the kitchen or friends coming and going.”

Jenny’s home studio is just off the living room, and most days she works with an open door to keep an eye on the action. “I keep a cozy chair in here where the boys can come in to chat or just hang out,” she says. Christian’s studio is in a detached one-car garage. “My 10-year-old comes out and works on his own woodworking projects with me, which I love,” he says.

Christian’s first project was a Pinewood Derby car he built at age six. “It didn’t win any prizes, but I sure did love it,” he says.

Jenny won a grocery store coloring contest and scored a trip to the Ice Capades. “That prize had a lasting impact on my love of creating,” she says. By the second grade she was melting crayons and molding them into shapes. “At recess I opened my desk like a shop and sold them to my classmates.”

Christian specializes in the design of modern mountain homes that blend with their natural surroundings. He integrates contemporary aesthetics with sustainable practices, making homes that stand as residential marvels but also harmonize with the landscapes they inhabit.

galleries

Christian The Art Spirit Gallery, Coeur d’Alene Radius Gallery, Missoula Jenny Art Works Gallery, Sandpoint Meadowbrook Home & Gift, Sandpoint Both artists are on display at the Artist’s Studio at Schweitzer Mountain.

“When stuck, I’ve learned to start with something small and find my groove again. I teach my students that this is called the ugly stage. Don’t worry, it's just the painting having growing pains. The trick is to keep painting.” - Jenny

Jenny is impressed by M.C. Escher’s power to alter reality and by renaissance painter Jan Van Eyck. “He painted in spectacular detail and included symbolisms that urged the viewer to think.”

Her bold acrylic paintings combine those important influences, depicting everything from wild animals to automobiles. But all is not as it seems. These are paintings that challenge the viewer to look longer and deeper, because the artist has always left something subtle to ponder.

Jenny is Sandpoint’s 2023 Artist Of The Year. “She is a dynamic force of creativity, born with an expansive imagination and a relentless determination to perfect her craft,” said the judges of the Pend Oreille Arts Council while announcing their decision.

Christian spent his early childhood in Alaska and was fascinated by native artwork. “I loved the abstract animals and the consistent use of solid black, blues and reds,” he says.

Today, his wood wall art echoes those early influences with bold shapes and bright colors, merging his love of design and of the raw beauty of natural materials. “It’s an exploration of form, texture and the interplay between structure and organic elements,” he says.

Their work is labor intensive, and it’s easy to work all night if you don’t make yourself stop. Juggling time is the biggest challenge they share. They make it a point to make time to hit the slopes at Schweitzer, to socialize in the town and to take family fishing and camping trips.

“I have so many ideas I’d like to paint,” Jenny says. “I wish I could travel the world with my family, and see everything in person to understand the feelings of the people and places and animals, and then paint it all.”

“To affect the quality of the day, that is the highest of arts,” wrote Henry David Thoreau.

Consider Jenny, up before anyone else, sipping coffee in her oasis among the early light and the plants, contemplating the next canvas, preparing for all the joyous kabooms the day will bring. And the hours fly by, and people and pets come and go, and life gets lived at its headlong pace, and all the while, art is being dreamed up, is being made, is being finished, is being shipped…

“It’s wonderful having a husband who understands what being an artist means. We bounce ideas off of each other all of the time. And I also love that his work is so different from mine. It’s a beautiful thing to maintain our individuality.” -Jenny

Consider Christian, in his garage studio, the afternoon’s commercial design work done. He sets it all aside for a while, hugs his family, cooks a BBQ dinner in his little backyard aspen grove. Then it’s back to work on his art, perhaps late into the night.

They are not just mixing paint and shaping wood. They are creating a life, crafting a rich and textured series of days.

Which is, after all, the very best kind of art you can make.
