PUBLISHER’S MESSAGE As we put this issue of CDA Magazine together, I’m enjoying the chill in the morning air, the colors on the trees, the smell of wood smoke from a chimney.

With all the troubles of the world, there’s nothing like the simple pleasures, and there’s no place like our Idaho home.

In this issue, it’s heartwarming to read about how Honor Flight gives veterans the homecoming they always deserved. We also have stories about a local woman discovering her dad’s POW diaries and a combat vet who now helps find the remains of those who have been missing in action for decades.

I am also encouraged by the positive story of our Coeur d’Alene Junior Rowing team. Or our four-time Idaho athlete of the year, Melody Kempton, who landed her dream position playing for Gonzaga. And I’m delighted to see the support our community lends to 4-H kids, who are fast becoming the model citizens of our future.

Photographer Adam Schluter searched all over the world for the best place to live and now calls Coeur d’Alene home. He cured his depression, anxiety and shyness by simply walking up to strangers and saying hello. It’s an inspiring story.

6-8 small Cortland or Honeycrisp (or other baking apple), peeled and cored Your favorite pie pastry recipe, chilled Jar of Athol Orchards Apple Cider Caramel Egg white and heavy cream wash (2 egg whites and equal parts heavy cream) 1 cup sugar 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon 8-ounce bottle of Athol Orchards Apple Cider Syrup Preheat the oven to 450˚. Peel and core apples. (Use a good baking variety so the apple holds its shape). Roll chilled pastry to ¼-inch thickness and cut into 6-inch squares. Blend sugar and cinnamon in a bowl and coat peeled apples. Place each apple in the center of your cut pastry squares. Add 1 tablespoon of Athol Orchards Apple Cider Caramel into the center of each apple. Press it down into the apple.

Using a pastry brush, apply egg wash around the edges of each pastry square. Bring each corner up to meet at the top, pressing together each seam all the way up with no extra space inside. Cut out some decorative leaf shapes to add to the top of each dumpling. Place each dumpling onto a pan lined with parchment paper. Using pastry brush, apply egg wash onto each dumpling and sprinkle each with a dusting of sugar. Bake at 450˚ for 10 minutes. Reduce heat to 350˚ and bake for another 20-25 minutes or when pastry is golden brown. Serve warm with a drizzle of Athol Orchards Apple Cider Syrup and a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Obsessed with Apples

When Nikki Conley walks through her apple orchard, she sees a living history, growing in front of her eyes.

She and her husband, Erreck, created the Athol Orchards Antique Apple Farm from scratch, a labor of love with the entire family involved. Their daughters, Mackenzie and Madelyn, help pick apples in the fall, tend to the herd of Nigerian Dwarf goats and help at farmers markets. For Nikki, the project has been a painstaking yet compelling journey.

“SOME OF THESE APPLE VARIETIES DATE BACK 400 YEARS,” SHE SAYS. “THEY WERE PRIZED FOR PIES, SAUCE, CIDERS AND FRESH EATING, AND WE ARE PRESERVING THAT LEGACY.” Along the way, she’s met some of her heroes in the world of heirloom apples, including David Benscoter, a retired FBI agent from the Inland Northwest who now hunts down lost apple varieties. Nikki has joined his Lost Apple Project and has begun exploring old homesteads in North Idaho to find these forgotten apples.

The owners and friends have put their sweat and tears into making these orchards grow, and this event last fall was a celebration of family farming and community spirit.

“We clip scion wood from the old tree and graft that onto rootstock on our farm,” she says. “We hope to save these historical genetics for future generations of apple lovers.”

On her quest, she’s rubbed shoulders with apple identifier and historian John Bunker, as well as Daniel Bussey, author of The Illustrated History of Apples in the United States and Canada.

She loves leading fall farm tours, especially for kids; showing them how to graft apple trees, explaining the historical significance behind her apples and telling the legend of Johnny Appleseed. She is a pioneer of her own, breaking new ground with old apples.

“I had to find a way to fund my obsession with apples,” she laughs. “In building our farm, I’ve found that dreams can come true if you’re stubborn enough.”

Preheat the grill to medium high heat. Grill chop for 4 minutes, rotate 90 degrees and continue to cook for another 4 minutes. Flip the chop over, brush on olive oil and seasoning, and continue to cook for 4 minutes, then rotate chop 90 degrees and cook it for 4 more minutes. When the temperature on the meat thermometer reaches 125˚, remove the chop from heat and let rest for 10 minutes. Finish with maitre d'hotel butter, and serve with fresh grated horseradish, horseradish foam, smoked salt, truffle salt and exotic mushroom demi-glace.

Exotic Mushroom Demi-Glace 1 ounce of each rough-chopped cremini, 1 cup red wine oyster and morel mushrooms 4 ounces demi-glace ¼ cup chopped shallots Salt and black pepper 1 tablespoon butter In a saucepan, sauté shallots and mushroom in butter over medium high heat until shallots lightly caramelize. Deglaze with red wine and reduce by half, add demi-glace and season with salt and pepper to taste.

Pastry for a 9-inch, one-crust pie 1 heirloom pumpkin (cooked down in your chosen method) or 2 cups cooked pumpkin ¾ cup sugar ½ teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon ½ teaspoon ginger ¼ teaspoon cloves 1⅓ cup evaporated milk Heat the oven to 425˚. Prepare pastry. Beat eggs slightly with a hand mixer.

Beat in remaining ingredients. Place a pastry-lined pie plate on the oven rack; pour in filling. Bake for 15 minutes. Reduce oven temp to 350˚. Bake about 45 minutes longer (until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean). Cool.

If placing cinnamon sugar cutouts on your pie, cut out extra pie crust into a decorative shape. Place on a cookie sheet, brush with butter and sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar. Bake cutouts at 425˚ for 12-15 minutes.

Place cooled cutouts on cooled pie.

For Coeur d’Alene’s Junior Rowing Team, these morning sessions are profound. In the boats, they forget all their troubles and pull together as one.

“My kids found their tribe here,” says Christa Hazel, whose children both blossomed as rowers. “It’s a special dynamic. They gained an athletic outlet and friends.”

“It’s therapeutic,” says Emma Hazel, her daughter and the team co-captain. “As you row, you become mindful of your whole body. It leaves you feeling calm.

Kids will come to practice after a bad day, saying they just need to row it out.”

The heart of the team is coach Martin Stacey, always motivating, encouraging, admonishing, a role he has played with humble greatness for nearly 25 years.

ROWING IS THE ULTIMATE SPORT ”

“These rowers come from every background," Stacey says. "But they learn to work together to propel a boat at maximum speed.”

“Coach Martin makes each rower feel uniquely seen,” Hazel says. “Quietly, for decades, he has coached teens who didn’t feel a part of things into a sense of belonging. How he motivates teenagers to get up at 6 a.m. is a mystery, but it’s also a testament to his leadership.”

In rowing, kids from all walks of life find a home. Other team sports sometimes leave them feeling awkward or unwanted.

Rowing is different.

Stacey, who always wants to make it about the kids and will talk about himself only under protest, is cultured, well-spoken and an outlier. He grew up in New York and has been a teacher and businessman.

He began coaching in Coeur d’Alene with a couple of vintage wood Pocock shells and a few eager youngsters.

“I told them, you’ll have to get up early and be there for every practice,” Stacey recalls. “Those young ladies stayed with it for a year and never missed. By the mid 1990s, we went to Nelson, B.C., to compete with other high school rowing teams.”

THE DISCIPLINE OF ROWING HELPS DEVELOP COOPERATION AND TIME MANAGEMENT. IT ALSO PROVES THERAPEUTIC. “I’ve had teammates come to practice after failing a test or losing a pet, and they always leave feeling better,” says Emma Hazel. “It’s a tough sport, but it brings out the best in all of us.”

“There is no fame to be found in rowing, but there is deep, profound satisfaction,” Stacey says. “Seeing a student find those limits that don’t exist and rowing back to the dock with that big smile on their face? That is everything.”

Rowing is his own solace, too. From his cabin on Priest Lake, he launches his wood craft in the glassy hours. “The beauty of water in the early morning is something you have to see,” he says. “It’s a lake at its most beautiful.”

While he pulls the oars, he often imagines all the rowing possibilities in North Idaho.

Priest River already has a passionate club. With lakes everywhere, more clubs could spring up, and hundreds of young rowers could go on practicing his beloved pursuit.

Rowing boats are called shells. Rowing boats with scullers (a person with two oars) are sculls, such as single scull, double scull or quadruple scull. Hence, all sculls are shells, but not every shell is a scull.

The smallest boat, the single scull, is 27 feet long and as narrow as 10 inches across. At 58 feet, the eight is the longest boat on the water, carrying more than 1,750 pounds in crew. Newer shells, made of honeycombed carbon fiber, seem fragile but are crafted to be strong and stiff.

The shaft of the oar is made of lightweight carbon fiber instead of the heavier wood used in the past. The popular hatchet blade, named for its cleaver-like shape, is 20 percent larger than previous blades.

The oars attach to the boat with riggers, which provide a fulcrum for the levering action of rowing.

Rowing for sport began in 1828, when the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge ran their first race, still an annual tradition. Rowing became the first intercollegiate sport in America when Harvard and Yale competed in 1858 on Lake Winnipesaukee.

Rowing got its second start in Coeur d’Alene in the mid1980s as a community rowing program at North Idaho College, with founders Jim MacLeod, Rod Mott, Peter Wagstaff and Chuck Moseley and friends at the oars of eight-man wood boats.

In the early 1900s, rowing was popular on Lake Coeur d’Alene, with regattas attracting up to 20,000 spectators. The sport faded away here after the Depression.

Rowing is one of the original sports in the modern Olympic Games. From 1920 until 1956, America won the gold medal in the men's eight at every Olympic Games.

few years ago, I was in a very tough place,” he says. “I had just moved to Coeur d' Alene, not knowing a single person, and then went through a difficult breakup. I quickly became depressed, feeling isolated from the world around me, and was relying on social media to help fill the void. It made it worse. Much worse. One day, I finally hit a wall, and was contemplating suicide as a way out. When these thoughts started happening, I knew I had to do something that terrified me. That got me out of my home, out of my comfort zone. Something to wake me up.”

H

e looked at a world map on a computer and, with the money he had saved up waiting tables, decided to book a one-way ticket to Copenhagen. His plan was to leave his phone at home and just ride trains to as many countries as he could and walk up to strangers and say hello. He would ask for their photograph, then put his camera away and try to have a genuine conversation. Because he didn't have enough money for the train rides, he reached out to Eurail on a whim and asked them to sponsor him.

And to his surprise, they said yes, allowing him to ride any train, any time, anywhere he wanted.

That project, The World I See, led him to visit 20 countries, photographing more than a thousand strangers along the way. An introvert by nature, Schluter was scared of every single encounter.

“Through my vulnerability, I became more authentic and, in that, I felt a closeness to those around me every day,” he says. “I learned how much the world is full of people who would love to share in your life, if you first just say hello.”

While on a layover in the Chicago airport, Adam spotted this man standing in front of a metal wall, accenting his look. “We shared a wonderful conversation about pursuing art.”

This is Butch, holding court at his favorite North Idaho watering hole. “I’ve sat spellbound and heard these locals tell the most incredible stories. Butch told me, 'I'm 76 and I have been drinking beer in this bar since I was 13 years old.'”

Adam shared a cup of coffee with this regular at the Hoot Owl Cafe and asked him what it was like living in the mountains. “He said 'Have a seat, son. I grew up in the wilderness and I have some great bear stories to tell ya.'”

Driving down a backroad, Adam happened to see this woman under a tree whose flowers matched her hair. “It's incredible how often people stand in the perfect spot for a beautiful photograph. I turned around and went back to introduce myself and we shared a great conversation. It was one of my favorite moments.”

ecently, he used that insight to document society’s latest upheavals. During the Covid-19 shutdowns, he shot eerily abandoned cityscapes across the American West. He worked on the front lines of protests in Minneapolis, Seattle and Portland with unprecedented access to his subjects.

“In a time when the world feels so divided, I wanted to continue to put myself into situations where I would learn how to empathize,” he says. “That is the only way that we can not just focus on what we disagree on, but use our time with one another to truly listen.”

Before all of this started, while living in Mexico, he took on a project to look for the ultimate hometown.

After 22,000 miles and 10 months of driving, he picked Coeur d’Alene. “There’s incredible beauty, it’s the right sized town, but most importantly it’s the people. The moment I stepped foot here, I felt welcomed.”

His next goal is to bring his project to the Middle East and India to continue learning humanity in complex situations. No matter where life takes him, one thing’s for sure: Adam Schluter will never run out of new friends.

“I just want to continue to remind myself how to be human in a very complicated world,” he says. “And I hope to inspire people to put their phones away and interact with those around them, every single day.

Even if they don't know what to say or how to say it. We absolutely must try our best to be there for each other. To try our best to bring this world just a little closer together.”

The more I talked to Adam, the more I became amazed by how sincere his questions were and how openly he shared his story. Big One Obsessions with fresh water salmon

On Lake Coeur d’Alene, every day is fishing season.

nd it’s a deepwater affair. Yes, you can cast for bass and pike in the shallower waters and warmer months. But the real heart of this fishery is year-round trolling for two mighty fine species of landlocked salmon, the chinook and the kokanee, those beauties that spawn along our shorelines and up our rivers, live deep and fight hard. Those who tempt these swimmers from the depths are diehards, setting forth at dawn, their downriggers ready. They drop a flasher or dodger designed to send vibrations through the water. Way down there, the chinook feel it long before they can see it, using a unique row of nerve cells along their sides and on top of their heads. They come charging fast, attacking the herring, fly or squid pattern.

The fight is on. For the fisherman, the reward may be as simple as the feeling of something primitive and vital on the other end of their surging line. Sometimes the fish ends up on the table, but often it returns to swim in those mysterious depths again.

Can’t stop until it’s dark.

illy Shaffer can barely remember a time when he didn’t fish.

“Growing up, my grandpa always used to say I could catch fish out of a mud puddle,” Billy says. “I’m not sure what it is, but when I see water, all I can think about is fishing.”

He and his wife Dawn are on the water 50 or 60 days a year, catching hundreds of big fish a year, and releasing almost all the fish they catch. Billy fishes somewhere every month of the year, regardless of ice, snow, rain or sunshine.

How they serve salmon Barbecue the fish in foil with lemons, oranges and cilantro, then top with Béarnaise sauce before serving. Or, take equal portions of parmesan, sour cream and mayo, spread it over the top and cook in the oven until it starts to brown.

“I usually can’t stop until it’s dark out,” says Billy, a career lineman for Avista. “I would fish every weekend if Dawn would let me, and if I had someone to do all the chores. I put in 600 hours of fishing a year, and I wish it was twice that much.”

“We have always enjoyed just hanging out together, and I couldn’t ask for a better fishing partner,” says Dawn, a hairdresser. The high school sweethearts will be celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary this year. Their eldest, Dylan, joined the family fishing legacy at age five when he landed an 18-pound salmon to win the youth division in the Big One Derby on Lake Coeur d’Alene. His sister, Rashell, soon won trophies of her own.

Herring in a helmet, spoons, flasher/squid, dodger/fly Billy’s greatest glory was winning The Big One Derby, and coming in second two other years. Recently, Billy and Dawn caught the biggest rainbows of their lives, a 20-pounder and a 15-pounder at the same time, a double hookup on Lake Pend Oreille. Billy’s biggest shame this past season was losing a 20-plus pound rainbow, and then another, right at the boat because he’d mistakenly left his downriggers in the water and the fish line tangled in them. “I had fought each of those fish for 45 minutes,” he says, shaking his head.

Now that Dylan and Rashell are grown, Billy and Dawn bought a bigger boat with a berth and a diesel heater so they can stay out all weekend. The name of their boat is Reel Livin’.

“The kids still join us a few times a year, but they're busy with their own houses and jobs now,” Billy says. “But Rashell just gave us our first grandson, and I can’t wait to take him fishing.”

And so the pursuit goes on.

”It’s all about that bite.”

on Houk has a genuine fishing pedigree. He grew up fishing Lake Coeur d’Alene with his parents, and his mom, Virginia Sturgis, invented the Frisky Jenny fly. When the first chinook salmon were put into Lake Coeur d’Alene in the early 1980s, she created her own fly with sewing thread and deer hair. The Frisky Jenny is now a must-have for catching salmon here.

His wife, Susan, fished the creeks of Priest River as a kid. “We were always fishing,” she says. Fishing is how Don and Susan met.

This year marks Don’s 25th season as a fishing guide on Lake Coeur d’Alene. He spends up to 75 days a year on the lake for business and fun. “It’s chasing fish wherever we can,” he says. “It’s always a challenge, but it’s a good challenge.”

He helps host fishing seminars every year, sharing the fundamentals and knowledge that has worked for him for years. “I like the challenge of trying to outsmart a finicky fish,” he says.

Susan accompanies his bass and pike trips and helps the clients fish while he drives and fishes. Pike are her favorite fish. “It’s all about the bite,” she says. “I like watching the fish hit, and I love that feeling of a hard fighting fish.”

Don’s advice

Their fish recipes For salmon, rub olive oil and then your favorite dry rub on the fillet, let sit for an hour and grill it, starting with the skin side down. Don’t overcook it. For pike and bass fillets, dip in flour, egg and panko mix, then deep fry.

Their fishing brings people together, creating quality time with family and friends.

Fishing becomes a part of life: the highs, the lows and the laughs. Don previously worked for the Coeur d’Alene street department, and once took his boss out fishing. The boss got into a big fish, and when he almost had it to the boat, Don knocked it off the line when he tried to net it. “No brownie points there,” he says.

“As my mother grew older, she wanted more than ever to be out here,” Don says.

“She was the old fisherman of the sea. It was her world. She’d had a stroke, lost her speech, and was still fishing.”

Don took her out for a final outing, where she directed him to tie up a rig to her precise specifications. She promptly landed a magnificent 16-pound chinook, much to her delight. It was the last fish she ever caught. But in true fashion, the rig she’d created took on a life of its own.

“After mom passed away, I was still catching fish on that setup,” Don says.

“One day, I was fishing on the lake and I got her special rig hung up on the bottom, and lost it. I was so bummed.

Then, about a week later, our friend Don Wimpenny told me how he’d been out fishing, and his pole was acting weird, and he’d brought it in and there, hooked on the end, was Mom’s setup. By a very slim chance, the trailer hook on her fly had hooked the eye on his downrigger ball. He brought it back to us. So Susan tied a handful of those flies and gave them to him. We went on catching fish on mom’s rig. What are the odds of that happening? It was meant to be.”

Frisky Jenny flies These renowned flies come in 75 color patterns, named after football teams, people’s boats and grandkids. Susan runs the company and ties the flies by hand along with her sister. The key to a good fly is balance. ”If you can take them out of the package and the fly runs straight through the water, that’s well tuned, and that’s a good thing,” Susan says.

Distinct Quality Craftsmanship

H

e was one of the most exciting rock and roll drummers of his time, stylishly attired in his trademark white jumpsuit, coaxing a thrilling rhythm from his clear, acrylic Zickos drum kit with the double bass. His physical presence was unmistakable and his sound was legendary.

Floyd Sneed laid down the groove that helped make Three Dog Night the hottest band in America in the late 1960s and early ’70s. With Sneed on the drums, the band made twelve straight gold LPs, with 22 Top 40 hits in a row and four number one hit singles. Today, at age 77, the Classic Drummer Hall of Fame inductee lives near Coeur d’Alene, where he barbecues and creates art.

He grew up in Calgary, Alberta, where both his parents were musicians in their church.

He took an early interest in drums, formed a band and moved to L.A. The story goes that Three Dog Night bassist Joe Schermie thought he heard two drummers in a club, and stopped in to find he was hearing Sneed.

“I call it the L’African, combination of Latin and African drums,” Sneed says today.

“I developed my own style. I was a show off. I enjoyed performing, recording and the people we met. Loved every minute of it. Seeing the world. From Hendrix to Joplin to you name the artist, we met them back in the pop festival days.”

he drummer has played in other bands and made musical appearances over the years, often attired in his trademark cavalry hat. “Well, I’m from Calgary, Alberta, and I was always very impressed by the story of the buffalo soldiers, the black men who served on the frontier.”

Sneed discovered North Idaho four years ago, at the urging of his longtime girlfriend, Suzanne. “I love this area very much, and will be here for the remainder of my life. I’ve been around the world, and the people here are more than friendly and kind.”

He’s been writing a book, called When You Believe, scheduled for release soon. “In 1954, I was paralyzed with polio, but I was healed through prayer, and my belief in Jesus. I’ve had cancer in my neck, and that is gone, and I can attribute that to my faith and my belief. My ruptured colon, too. I’ve been blessed my whole life.”

He also plans to do an art show, where he’d like to play Three Dog Night songs and tell stories.

SAVING DAD’S DIARIES F

or Coeur d’Alene’s Dana Wetzel and her sister, Debra Hardy, the horror and bravery of wartime still hits awfully close to home. Their father, Broda R. Rayborn, was a robust 21-year-old from Twin Falls, Idaho when he enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1941.

He had been working as a miner in the mountains near Sun Valley. He said he was tired of being cold and the Pacific sounded warm.

matter of fact, defiant, his diaries were scrawled carefully in smuggled notebooks or anything else he could find. He risked torture or death if his captors found them. When he finally tasted freedom again, he still carried those diaries. But the man who brought them home was never the same.

“DAD NEVER MEANT TO BE A HERO.”

What awaited instead was terror, misery and starvation. He survived the brutal bombardment and surrender of Corregidor, was captured by the Japanese as one of only two men remaining of his platoon and spent three unthinkable years as a prisoner of war at a series of primitive camps in the Philippines and then Japan. His captors drove bamboo slivers under his fingernails and repeatedly smashed his collarbones.

By his account, the thing that kept him sane in those prison camps was the record he kept. Unsparing,

“It was just an unspoken rule in the family that we did not talk about dad’s experiences in the war,” Dana says. “Mom would squeeze pus pockets that formed on dad’s back where pieces of shrapnel had worked their way to the surface and pop the shrapnel pieces out.

Sometimes she would say that we needed to have a quiet day because dad had had a bad night or that his malaria had come back. He never ate rice, and if we did go to an Asian restaurant, he would always order off the American menu. When we balked at food, he would say, ‘You can eat anything when you are hungry enough.’”

He gave his three children a variety of instructions. When moving or hiding or walking, they should never travel in a predictable line.

They should be quiet in the woods.

They must always be prepared with extra supplies and survival tools.

He dressed them for skiing or hiking with great care, tucking in their pants and lacing their boots tight.

He taught them never to panic, to focus instead on the problem and

find a solution. He also taught them to question authority, even though he served as sheriff of Twin Falls County and worked off and on in law enforcement. He never trusted anyone to make decisions for him again.

Throughout his life, he was respected and trusted by the old timers in his town. When there was an accident in the mines, he was the first person called to the scene because of his size and strength, his calm head and his empathy for the man who’d been hurt.

Sgt. Broda Rayborn died at his own hand in September of 1980, just past his 60th birthday. Afterwards, his daughters held the diaries and read them for the first time.

“I was astounded by how small they were, fragmented into different books, and how tiny his writing had to be,” Dana says. “The heartbreaking weight of what Dad endured flowed through my hands every time. The courage and hope is unmistakable, and his will to live. I kept asking myself, line by line, could I have done this, could I do this? How much of his strength and courage and defiance runs through my own veins and that of my siblings?”

Debra, Dana and their brother, Steve, can now take pride and solace in the fact that, thanks to their efforts, their father’s diaries were recently installed in the Veteran’s Project at the Library of Congress. Because of how risky it was to keep records in Japanese camps, they are only the second set of their kind from POWs in the Pacific Theater. There, his history lives on.

“Dad never meant to be a hero,” Dana says. “He loathed that status and never spoke of any action he took. But he was a hero, and we gave him to the nation. I still cry when I remember leaving his diaries with the Library of Congress. He would never have placed himself there, but it is right where he and his diaries belong.”

I

t was 1945 when 24-year-old Kathleen McGarvie joined the U.S. Army Nurse Corp. As a registered nurse, she worked at Fort Richardson near Anchorage, Alaska, caring for military personnel and civilians.

Seven decades came and went while she married her husband, H. Don Moseley, M.D., an army surgeon, and raised a family in Coeur d’Alene.

In the intervening years a massive memorial was built in Washington, D.C. to honor those who served in WWII. She finally laid eyes on that memorial 74 years after her military service when she joined a trip organized by Inland Northwest Honor Flight. At age 98, she was the oldest traveler on the flight.

Kathleen especially remembers the private changing of the guard ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. She also loved the reception in Spokane when the Honor Flight group returned.

Although the hour was late, there were lots of people, a high school band and TV crews. Kathleen led the line of veterans off the plane and was first to greet the crowd.

“I was humbled by the individual experiences of the vets on our trip and by the memorials, especially the beautiful WWII memorial,” says Jan, her daughter-in-law, who accompanied Kathleen as a guardian.

“I also experienced a profound sense of sadness at the loss of so many lives through so many conflicts.”

A

t age 19, Bryan Bledsoe enlisted for three years in the Army. He served one year in combat in Vietnam in 1966 and 1967 as a helicopter crew chief and door gunner.

Fifty-three years later, at age 72, he joined a chartered jet of 100 veterans who served in WWII, Korea and Vietnam.

Twenty veterans were in wheelchairs. They rode on three chartered deluxe tour buses, with a police escort on every leg of the trip, and visited Arlington and six memorials.

“The greetings and welcomes were unforgettable,” says Don Walker, Army vet and Bledsoe’s longtime friend and his guardian on the flight. “At every location, people stopped and clapped or shook our hands. They often said ‘Welcome home’ and ‘Thank you.’ These warriors weren’t counting on goosebumps and tears, but they happened, time after time.”

“About two hours into the flight home, we were asked if we remembered mail call,” Bledsoe says. “Of course, everyone in the military looked forward to receiving mail from home.

Then the volunteers on the flight began handing out packets. We all had tears in our eyes as we read letters from friends, kids, grandkids and spouses. There were also letters from school kids, so everyone had mail. When we landed, our path was jammed with people who had come to welcome us home. It was something we Vietnam veterans never experienced. There were signs, the high school band and people cheering and waving. It was an incredibly emotional experience.”

The vets paid nothing for their travels, thanks to Inland Northwest Honor Flight. They were accompanied by volunteer guardians who paid their own way. Other volunteers handled logistics and greeted the Honor Flight participants at each stop. “Volunteers are what makes this happen,” Bledsoe says. “They were always there looking after us.”

These warriors, honored at long last, could now make some new memories together. And perhaps they could reshape some old ones, too.

“One of the most moving parts of the trip was hearing new friends talk about the war,” Walker says. “Some of the veterans stayed up until the early hours talking, slow and guarded at first, but open and deep later. This was a safe place for them, a place they could show feelings with people who shared their experiences.

It helped to remember, and it helped to forget.”

e’s part warrior, part detective, part Indiana Jones. A veteran of two tours in Iraq, Alex Castagno now has a fascinating and little-recognized role in American warfare: working with the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency to locate American service members missing in action. In the remote Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea and outlying Pacific Islands, he helps recover those remains to give families and comrades a final sense of peace.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE JOB? The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency promises to “Provide the fullest possible accounting for our missing personnel to their families and the nation.” It’s a combined effort with active duty personnel, civilian Department of Defense employees and the private sector. My company, ACS Logistics, working in partnership with Pacific Helicopters, provides logistical support for the investigation and recovery missions in places where the United States fought the Japanese during WWII. The agency follows leads from military documents and personal experience from the locals. The investigations gather enough evidence so that a recovery team can come in for an archeological excavation. When the teams arrive, I provide support for many of their in-country needs. It could be customs and immigration formalities, airport access and permits or hiring locals in the 74

villages close to the site. Prior to the team's arrival, I may have been building a basecamp in the middle of the jungle, on the side of a river or on a coastal beach. This is where the relationship that’s been built with the local nationals becomes most important. We’re about to live in their home in some of the most remote places in the world for the next couple months. Many of these places are only accessible via helicopter and/or on two feet.

WHAT HAVE THE PEAK EXPERIENCES BEEN?

WHAT SURPRISES YOU MOST? Every day can be a surprise in a place like Papua New Guinea or the Solomons. It’s often called the land of the unexpected. Those words are sure to bring a smile to a local not expecting to hear New Guinea Pidgin spoken by a white man. I have flown in the cockpit of a C-130, and our team was there when the full skeleton was pulled out of the cockpit of an airplane. In Guadalcanal, I have worked in or visited the historical battlefields of Alligator Creek, Bloody Ridge, Henderson Field and The Gifu, located on Mt. Austen where I have a special relationship with my friends at Mbarana Village.

Every day enroute to Mbarana I pass by the location where John Basilone earned the Medal of Honor. Surprises are around every corner and there are rarely dull moments.

The mission as a whole. From start to finish, we’re walking through the battlefields of our forefathers, but with much better gear and we aren’t in a gunfight. The highlight of the whole mission can happen when we are screening, pushing dirt through metal screens to find evidence, and we find a piece of osseous (bone) material. Then another, and maybe some personal items such as a wedding band. It can be incredibly emotional. But it’s even more incredible when we find out that those remains have a DNA match from the DPAA laboratory, the largest and most diverse skeletal identification lab in the world, staffed by more than 30 anthropologists, archaeologists and forensic odontologists. You can only imagine the sense of gratification and pride felt when a soldier, sailor or airman has been positively identified and is finally allowed his or her repatriation back to the U.S. and a formal funeral ceremony. I was recently notified of a DNA match of 2nd Lt. William H. Melville, an Air Force pilot who laid where his plane had crashed for 76 years until we brought him home to U.S. soil in 2019. That was a peak experience.

To show my son that there is so much more to our world than our easy American life. It takes exploring, seeing hardship firsthand and putting yourself in dynamic situations to understand things outside our comfort bubble. Since my time in the Army, I continue to hold dear the words of the Ranger creed, “I will never leave a fallen comrade to fall into the hands of the enemy.” Right now, that enemy is the dirt and water that covers more than 80,000 missing service members who lay beneath it. My quest for them will never end.

It’s the bee’s knees, the cat’s pajamas. It has the spirit of a stylish French dinner club, the heart of a luxury international ocean liner, the soul of a fast aeroplane to tomorrow.

This is a home where the fun-loving, designhungry optimism of the Roaring Twenties inhabits every room. The moment you cross into the charming entryway, you are under the spell of another time, a bold and thrilling era of possibility.

Kirsty and Walter Burns are the creative minds at work here. Both longtime collectors, they met 27 years ago at the Marin City flea market. Their first date was to an antique show. She was a fashion designer and he was a financial writer who spent every spare moment restoring Victorian homes in San Francisco.

When the dot - com bubble burst, they began collaborating on designing homes together for a living, and it turns out they were very good at it.

They found a place in Coeur d’Alene’s Garden District, a tree-lined neighborhood close to the downtown. Built in 1907, the house has gone through many metamorphoses over the years. From cdamagazine.com

“It’s interesting that the framing lumber that was used long ago was far superior compared to the lumber you can buy today,” says Derek Adams, owner of Creekside Construction, who the couple hired for the remodel job. “This particular house was built very stout.”

Now mostly retired, although always on the lookout should an intriguing project come their way, they recently n came to live here in Coeur d’Alene. They wanted a large home in a historic neighborhood, with enough room to display the beloved art and furnishings they’d collected over many years.

1915 to 1965, it was the family home of Ralph Nelson, the fourth mayor of Coeur d’Alene. “There were all of these large windows,” Kirsty says. “I’ve always wanted a sunroom, a grand entry and a gazebo, and this house had them all.”

Beyond that, the house had been remodeled and updated several times over the years.

They didn’t have to contend with old wiring, leaking pipes and cracked walls. It was the ideal blank canvas for two dreamers with their heads full of history.

Art Deco is a highly stylized form of expression that influenced everything from architecture to industrial design in the Roaring Twenties and Great Depression years. The style began to emerge in Paris around 1910, just after this house was built, and quickly spread throughout Europe and the rest of the world. “What appeals to me is the boldness of the geometric styles and the striking color palettes used by designers of that era,” Walter says.

“I’m a big fan of Art Deco, but I also love much older design periods too,” Kirsty said. “The older the better. Louis XIV, Louis XV, the Napoleonic era, Georgian. You’ll find things from all these eras in our home, including a pair of lanterns from the 1600s. It’s about whether the thing speaks to you.”

Walter leads a tour. The entryway sets the mood of great zest, color and playfulness. Kirsty designed the lovely hand painted silk wallpaper from China that has been painstakingly fitted to the space. There is a collection of Walter’s mom’s glassware, now on display as fine sculpture. The space creates a sophisticated, yet welcoming, warmth that greets us as we walk in.

“One thing about this house, it will never truly be finished!” he says, gesturing to the living room ceiling, soon to be redone to better compliment the Bradbury & Bradbury wallpaper. A major focal point here is a 1930s abstract of airplanes by Italian futurist Giulio d'Anna. It’s a compelling example of Art Deco’s celebration of the modern world and industry, the promise of the machine age, sleek and sophisticated, with bold colors and high contrasts.

“I'm a pilot and I love airplanes,” Walter says. “I’m from the Beech Aircraft family, so it’s in my DNA.”

Nearby is a collection of rare industrial design Kodak cameras by Walter Dorwin Teague, Jr., made around 1930. The stained glass doors to the dining room came from Paris, and the couple has carted them around very carefully for years.

Kirsty & Walter’s design advice Start by looking through magazines; lots of them. Pull out everything you like. When you review it all, see what consistently jumps out at you.

That’s your design direction.

Never be afraid to use color. But beware of making choices based solely on paint chips. They can be extremely deceptive to the untrained eye, so paint a sample section on the walls of the room before you commit.

Make it personal. Choose colors, furnishings and objects that you love. Your home should be a reflection of you.

“Walter and Kirsty have a knack of finding some of the most amazing furnishings” Adams says. “I had to protect these doors throughout the construction process and I lost many hours of sleep worrying about them getting broken. You cannot replace things like that.”

The painter, Walter Lambert, who created them for British Leyland Motors, used his wife as inspiration for the early calendars, and based others on women who worked on the manufacturing floor.

The kitchen, with its breakfast nook, is warm and inviting, designed to be a modern take on a 1920s kitchen. Visitors always get a kick out of the fully functional 1936 Magic Chef stove. On the wall is the first Coca-Cola tray Walter’s mom bought him when he was 15. “That’s how the insanity started,” he says. He’s collected the memorabilia ever since, much of it on display here.

Part of the couple’s genius as a design team is their ability to agree to disagree. “We used to joke with clients, ‘You don’t need to argue, we’ll do it for you,’” Kirsty says.

Her touch reigns supreme in the sunroom, looking out over the garden and ruled by the cat perched on the mantle. Kirsty has always wanted a sunroom. “I have dozens of flapper-era handbags that I started collecting when I was a teen,” she says. “I love being able to showcase them in this room.” She also created the master bedroom and bath, where she displays vintage advertising and vanity items.

They are great additions to our community and they appreciate our area’s history and work to preserve its beauty.”

There was an ideal of integrating contemporary living with art and thereby turning life into art. The owners of this home have captured that with great virtuosity.

“What I love most about our home is that every room conveys a subtly different mood,” Walter says. “I find it enlivening.”

“It feels like home,” Kirsty says. “We came to Coeur d’Alene not knowing a soul.

Within a week, we started meeting our neighbors, and though we’ve only been here a couple of years, we have found lifetime friends here.”

Melody Kempton is a star attraction who makes North Idaho proud. A 6-foot-1 forward for Gonzaga, she was previously the all-time leading scorer, rebounder and shot-blocker for Post Falls High School.

She was named four-time North Idaho Female Athlete of the Year and was a three-time state champion in track, all with a

4.0 GPA while taking college-level classes. “Mel brings us a ton of physicality and energy to the court,” says Lisa Fortier, head coach of Gonzaga women’s basketball. “She has this great motor and ability to dig in to get to another level. She is working really hard to develop her leadership skills on this team. A lot of being a leader is about being diligent and investing in people. Melody has made a commitment to that the past couple of years, and you can tell in the way her teammates respond to her.”

WHY DO YOU LOVE BASKETBALL? It’s a very high intensity, high energy sport which works very well with my personality. I also really enjoy the social aspect of working with a team. We’re all working for the same thing and I love the feeling of accomplishing that goal with people I love. I’ve been a Gonzaga fan since I was little. When we were in grade school, my friends and I would get all dressed up in the team colors and go to the games.

WHAT HAVE YOU GIVEN IN ORDER TO EXCEL AT THE SPORT, AND WHAT HAS IT GIVEN YOU IN RETURN? The biggest sacrifice is time. Growing up, and especially in high school, I dedicated countless hours to improving my game and making myself the best I could be. In return, I was able to play at an amazing school and get my degree paid for. For me this was a great accomplishment and something I’ve been working toward for many years of my life.

WE HEAR YOU RAISED PIGS. WHAT ELSE WOULD PEOPLE LIKE TO KNOW ABOUT YOU? Yes, I did 4-H for three years during high school and really enjoyed it. It taught me a lot about responsibility and marketing which have helped me, not only in my college career, but in life in general. I love to eat lemons and I like apple cider vinegar, which most people find odd. I also walk on my toes. I’ve done it since I learned to walk and haven’t been able to break the habit. Growing up, many people called me Twinkle Toes.

WHAT'S YOUR LIFE PLAN FROM HERE AND HOW DOES BASKETBALL PLAY A ROLE? Honestly, my life plan seems to change week to week, but right now I’m getting my major in human physiology which would set me up to apply to nursing school, physical therapy, occupational therapy or pre med. Currently, I’m looking into becoming a medical sales representative but I have no official plans yet. Basketball has played a very large role in getting me where I am now. I’m not sure if I would want to play after college, but I’m not ruling anything out at this point.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR BEST MOMENTS WITH GONZAGA? WHY IS IT A SPECIAL PLACE TO PLAY? One of my favorite times was when we played Stanford my freshman year and won. It was a very high adrenaline game and I loved how my team worked together to take such a high ranked team down. Another favorite memory is when we played Purdue at the Gulf Coast Showcase. Not only did we beat them, making us the champions, but I had my career high with 18 points. Gonzaga is such a special place to play because of how the team works together to play the best we possibly can. There is such a lack of selfishness, which has caused us to thrive and build up this incredible program. I can’t wait to see what we accomplish next.

W

e’re headed through the narrow end of the Silver Valley, two friends and I, ripping along without effort.

We are riding borrowed e-bikes on the paved Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes, through a land that was once settled by hard rock miners. They broke their backs and sometimes their minds trying to unearth the silver and gold that lies beneath us. Men still mine here, but much of the treasure these days is above ground.

The Coeur d’Alene River flashes alongside, and cedar trees go by at 20 mph. I’ve never ridden a bike this fast this easily on the flats. After all the sweat and toil it took for railway workers to build the route beneath us, I almost feel guilty.

Every stroke of my pedals makes me feel like Superman and sends me flying.

We are here as guests of the affable Stu and Barb Strother, two university professors who craved small town life and found it in Wallace. They bought a chunk of history, a

125-year-old brick and mortar landmark at the intersection of Bank and Sixth. From their front step, you can see the manhole cover in mid-intersection that proudly proclaims Wallace as the Center of the Universe.

“This was built after the 1890 fire,” Stu says. “The city fathers brought all the boys from the mines and built four buildings in three months including this one, which was the bank and courthouse. Three years later, this became a cigar factory, run by a guy named Arthur Charles Cogswell. In this room, there were five dudes with suits and ties, sitting at desks rolling cigars. You’d come in here after your mining shift, and you could actually cash your paycheck, buy and smoke your cigars.”

Cogswell’s name is still inscribed near the entrance, so when the couple built their bike themed bar, they named it Cogs Gastropub. Upstairs, where there were offices, a brothel and hotel rooms over the years, they are creating two Airbnb apartments.

“We love the historical architecture, and the juxtaposition of this really charming town surrounded by these green mountains on all sides,” Barb says.

Their bike business, Cogs Spokehouse, rents out Rad Power fat tire e-bikes by the hour or the day.

“It makes it a lot easier for people who haven’t ridden much to go flying up a hill,” says their son, Nick. “When they get back they’re all smiles and giggles.”

They have eight different rides they recommend, in pretty much every direction from Wallace (see sidebar).

Some people simply want to cruise around town and look at Wallace, a living piece of history, with every downtown structure listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

We want to roam, so we ask the owners for their favorite ride.

“We like to head up to Mullan, have a beverage at Mullan Corner, then ride back down to Wallace,” Barb says. “It’s about 45 minutes round trip.”

4 BURKE GHOST TOWN Ride past historical markers and remnants of old mining towns, 15 miles.

5 NINE MILE TO BURKE LOOP Go north on 6th Street which becomes Nine Mile Road. Check out Miner’s Union Cemetery on your left.

After Blackcloud, take the first dirt road on the right. For the next six miles you will ascend high ridges with expansive views and then descend to Burke Canyon near Blackbear. Take the pavement back to Wallace. Length 14 miles, 4-6 hours, very difficult due to the steep rocky dirt road.

6 MOON PASS Go south on King Street out of Wallace. After one mile, lock up your bikes and hike the Pulaski Trail.

After hiking, ride the bikes south on NF-456 where you will arrive at Moon Pass after nine miles total. This is a steep dirt road, all uphill until Moon Pass. Check your brakes before riding back downhill to Wallace. Length 18 miles, difficult riding, 4-6 hours.

7 ROUTE OF THE HIAWATHA The trailhead is in Montana 22 miles away from Wallace, and well worth the trek. This former railroad route is 15 miles long and passes over high trestles and through tunnels. The trail is all downhill, but with e-bikes you can easily ride round trip instead of waiting in line for a return shuttle ride. Ride early to avoid the crowds.

Renting a heavy duty bike rack or booking transport to the trailhead is necessary. This ride is 30 miles roundtrip, and takes all day including driving. It is difficult due to slippery mud in the pitch-black tunnels.

8 HIAWATHA TRAIL TO WALLACE Arrange drop-off at the Hiawatha Trail (appointments are limited). Ride the Hiawatha, then take NF-456 back to Wallace. This all-day, 37-mile ride is very challenging but riders can cool off at the St. Joe River before making the climb up the Moon Pass and then coast nine miles back to Wallace.

nd so our crew saddles up for the Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes which runs right past town. This ambitious 73-mile rails-to-trails route spans the Idaho panhandle and was named one of the top trails in America by the Rails to Trails Conservancy. From here, we go upriver, our bikes doing a pleasant amount of the work for us.

Although it’s a non-motorized trail, administrators of the Trail of the Coeur d’Alene’s have allowed class 2 e-bikes.

That means up to a 750-watt motor and a speed of 20 mph, which is where our bikes top out with their built-in governor. The batteries last 30-50 miles, depending on the rider’s weight, how much they pedal and the grade of the trail. Tools, pump and patch kit are included, as well as helmets, which are recommended but not required.

My e-bike has a very comfortable seat and feels solid underneath me. Operation is super easy. With my left thumb, I control how much pedal assist I want, from 0 to 5.

As I begin pushing against the pedals, I feel the power kick in. With my right thumb, I can use a throttle to accelerate even more. We play around with the bikes like little kids, and in no time, we’re riding past the first houses of Mullan.

We take a left and go up the hill (throttle time!) and find Mullan Corner.

We park our bikes, sit at a wood table on the deck, and here comes Luke Ordway, the scruffy and smiling proprietor, to see what we’d like to drink. He also brings our table a sample of Mullan Corner’s signature gyro meat. While my companions nibble and order beverages, I ask Luke about his place.

“My brother, Clay, who’s a river guide and I just opened up in April,” he says. “He’s running the Outlaw Bar and Grill right next door, which is a pretty famous place around here from way back. This Mullan Corner building used to be a public broadcasting station.” He gestures up at the satellite dish overhead, which has now been painted to make a giant sign.

“This is an interesting town,” he says. “The outdoors is right out the back door. I love four-wheeling, mountain biking, elk and mushroom hunting. And because of the Lucky Friday mine, we have things no other town of this size would have. There’s an Olympic size swimming pool and a bowling alley. You should check the bowling out.”

I cross the street to the Morning Club Lanes, where the sign proclaims it the “Biggest Little Bowling Alley in the Northwest.” I stick my head in the door and feel like I’ve walked into the 1950s. A silver-haired man with his pants belted high scores a strike, lights blink and the place erupts in cheers.

Like any satisfying travel experience, I’ve taken the impulsive route, tried something new, traded stories with some characters and checked out the sights. I’m reluctant to hand in my bike. Before I do, I make a hot lap around Wallace, rubbernecking at all those brick buildings, the vintage signs, the UFO on the corner.

I think of all the people I can invite back to ride this place again, to explore all eight routes on Stu’s list, to see what else I can discover if I point my fat tires in the right direction and just hit the throttle.

It’s Warm Inside

Priest Lake’s family-run lodges are a winter’s delight.

There’s a hidden place where time seems to slow down, especially in winter.

F

or those few in the know, Priest Lake in the off season is a secret world all its own.

They enjoy cold clear mornings and cozy nights by the fire. They eat fine cuisine and ski, snowshoe or snowmobile beneath the frosty pines. They race sled dogs across the snowy landscape, and they even play softball in the snow.

“Our trip to Hill's Resort was like stepping back in time, but with the luxuries of today,” says Michelle Norwood. “Even in the winter there is something for everyone. One of my favorite memories was doing ‘cold’ yoga out on the deck of our cabin. It was one of the most tranquil experiences I have ever had, surrounded by the snow-covered lake, mountains and beach.”

“I loved sitting by the fire on the beach with a glass of wine,” says her husband, photographer Ben Norwood. “Being surrounded by the silence, beauty and snow made for a true romantic moment with my bride.”

he couple recently enjoyed an offseason stay at Hills Resort, one of three family owned getaways at Priest Lake that remain open year-round.

“What else did we love at Hills?

The food!” Michelle says. “They have an incredible chef, and the food is beautifully presented and delicious.

The owners are amazing and always willing to share their knowledge of the lake and the resort.”

“We also appreciated the chance to disconnect from technology,” Ben says. “It’s a good place to be unplugged. There's purposefully limited wifi. None of the cabins or rentals have TVs, which means our evenings could be spent by a woodburning fire playing games, reading and reconnecting. It was like going back to a simpler time when family and togetherness was a priority. We loved it.”

Hills started in 1946, when WWII vet George Hill bought the Farris Resort, a fishing camp with seven primitive cabins. He worked to add two cabins every summer. He married Lois Montecucco, and they purchased the lake’s other fishing resort, Timm’s Resort, in 1961. Then they moved that building next to Hill’s lodge and built a dining hall in between. Both original buildings still stand, and many guests are still returning from those early days.

“I

t’s great to see the same families come back year after year, to watch them grow,” says Whitney Hutchins, George and Lois’s granddaughter.

She knows, because she grew up here herself.

“My brother, Jake, and I had a different group of friends every week,” she says. “We were raised upstairs at the lodge, while our parents were downstairs at work. We were only allowed to interrupt our parents at work if there was blood, guts or fire.”

Their dad, Craig Hill, is the resort’s GM, their mom, Missy, works the front desk, and their uncle, Scott, works as a chef. Their aunt, Teri, has just retired after 34 years in charge of marketing and events, and Whitney has taken over that role.

“Between the two of us, Whitney and I worked every part of the resort growing up,” Jake says. “We started by cleaning cabins, washing dishes and bussing tables. As we became older, we shadowed our family to learn their roles. Now we are ready to help run the resort as the third generation of Hills.”

Today, Hills Resort has 52 cabins on the 19 acres they lease from the U.S. Forest Service on the west side of the lake. Not far away are two other family run resorts. Elkins Resort, north of Hills, was founded by Ike and Sue Elkins in the 1930s. Elkins has 30 cedar cabins with modern amenities and a fine dining restaurant. Nordman RV Park and Priest Lake Lodge, although not on the lake, has a post office, general store and restaurant. Named after Norwegian John Nordman, this iconic crossroads is now owned and operated by the Votava family.

Gone To The Dogs

J

eanne Arnold has an unreasonable love of two things: dogs and the outdoors. And, as it turns out, that is the right formula to become a musher. For 30 years she’s played leader of the pack, running her dogs down the trails of North Idaho.

“Whether it’s on wheels in the dirt, or a sled in the snow, there’s nothing else like it,” she says.

A podiatrist by trade, she currently has five Siberian Huskies, Amari, Daku, Dakota, Kanook and Cotari, all rescue dogs, living on her acreage in Post Falls.

“People bring Siberians home because they are beautiful animals, but what people don’t understand is that they are still a primitive working dog. If you don’t give them a job, they will be self employed, but probably not in an occupation you will be happy with. They will kill cats and dig holes. We keep them in a pack, and they get to run, and they are happy.”

She’s been racing for 25 years in the Priest Lake Sled Dog Races, typically held the first full weekend of February. The races have been going for 50 years.

“We start at the airstrip at Hanna Flats, and there are all these great trails back through the woods,” she says. “If you come as a spectator, you can watch the teams going by, and you can go around and talk to the mushers. You can learn a lot and meet some great people and dogs.”
