PUBLISHER’S MESSAGE When I consider all the things that need to happen to publish this magazine, I think about the Jack Scanlon story in ‘Mission Possible.’ I won’t spoil it for you, but talk about doing several things all at once and all without thinking about it. What seems like mission-impossible … becomes possible.

Or talk about possibilities and not fearing mistakes and worrying about what others might think. You might be tempted to call Janet and Greg Torline idealistic dreamers. But wait until you see their vision of home that began way back in the 1970s with an eye for the beautiful and the unusual. Again, another one where I won’t give away the ending. You’ll have to find out for yourself in ‘Simply Rich.’

TO PREPARE: Season steelhead fillets with olive oil, salt, pepper, garlic, thyme and lemon squeezed over the top. Let marinate for 20-30 minutes. Season potatoes and asparagus with olive oil, salt and pepper.

Preheat grill to 450° and place red potatoes.

After 15 minutes place steelhead on alder planks on the grill. After 3-4 minutes flip the steelhead over. Add asparagus, cover and continue to bake until the steelhead is 125°. Keep the alder planked steelhead on a spot on your grill where the edges of the boards will smolder and smoke. If the board catches fire use a squirt bottle with water to extinguish. Remove the fish when it is finished and pull the potatoes and asparagus as they become tender.

My passion these days is fishing through winter on the Clearwater River for steelhead.

These amazing fish start their lives in the Clearwater and swim downstream into the Columbia River and spend most of their lives in the Pacific

Ocean. After several years the fish return all the way to Idaho, traveling hundreds of miles and crossing four dams.

Fishing for them isn’t easy. Fishermen often spend a full day fishing in the cold without catching a thing. But for all the hard work, it’s worth it when you finally catch one of these beauties that can weigh up to 20 pounds. Steelhead is one of my favorite fish to eat. The filets look similar to salmon but have a milder taste like trout. They are great grilled, smoked, poached or pan seared. Any recipe that is good for salmon or trout is good when cooking steelhead.

I chose this recipe because it uses the traditional Native American technique of cooking fish on alder wood. The smoky flavor of this local

Wild mushroom risotto 9½ tablespoons butter, divided 1½ pounds fresh chanterelle, bear's tooth, lobster, king boletus (porcini) , chicken of the woods or coral mushrooms sliced about " thick 7 cups chicken stock 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil 1¼ cups Arborio rice

(Italian, short grain, high starch content)

¼ cup chardonnay ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese

TO PREPARE: Melt 2 Tbsp butter in skillet over medium-high heat. Add ¼ mushrooms with salt and pepper. Sauté until tender and starting to brown. Transfer to bowl. Make 3 more batches using remaining mushrooms.

Simmer chicken stock. Melt 1½ Tbsp butter with olive oil in saucepan; add rice, heat on medium. Stir until edges look translucent.

Add white wine and stir until absorbed.

Add ¾ cup chicken stock; stir until most is absorbed. Continue adding stock by ¾ cupfuls, stirring until most is absorbed before adding more, until rice is halfway cooked. Stir in mushrooms. Keep adding broth by ¾ cupfuls, stirring until most is absorbed, until rice is tender but firm and risotto is creamy. Stir in ¼ cup Parmesan.

TO PREPARE: Season pheasant breast with salt and pepper then dredge in flour, shaking off excess. Heat a large skillet over medium high and melt 3 Tbsp of butter with 2 Tbsp of olive oil. When the pan is hot add the pheasant and brown for 3 minutes then flip and cook for another 3 minutes.

When the pheasant is cooked move it to a plate and put the pan back on the heat and add the lemon juice, stock and capers. Let the sauce reduce, while scraping the fond (caramelized base) from the bottom of the pan for 3 minutes or until desired thickness.

Add the remaining butter and parsley and taste for seasoning. Add the pheasant back to the pan for 2 minutes then plate, pouring the sauce over the top of the pheasant.

Fascinations “I was that kid in the back seat, peering out the window. Growing up for a while near Rapid City, there were a lot of billboards and I liked looking at the shapes and arrangement of the letters. I was also the family’s mechanic. We would get something in pieces with ridiculous instructions, and assembling it was my job. My brother would watch and then enjoy the bicycle afterwards.”

Hands on “I loved woodshop in school, but computer work was dissatisfying.

I wanted to use my hands, not just click the mouse. With letterpress, you have to know how to run a vintage press with all its quirks. The ink color must be mixed just so, the rollers have to be at the right height, and on down the list. I’ve been lucky to learn from printers from another era, these really skilled, wonderful people.” cdamagazine.com

Machinery “At my Idaho print shop, Typebee, I have two Chandler & Price presses, one of which will be 100 years old this year. They are big, heavy machines, made of steel and cast iron. My 1954 Heidelberg Windmill is one of the last ones with all metal parts. You have to take care of the machinery: oil it, tell it good morning every day.”

Finding Idaho “I have Rebecca and Terry, owners of DOMA, to blame. She had this old press, and I knew how to clean it up and run it, but I lived and worked in Chicago. Their solution was to give me six plane tickets. They said, ‘Come and go, and print our coffee bags, and when the last ticket is gone you can make a decision.’ I would print 10,000 impressions, then fly away. Soon this became home instead.”

Playlist “There are two parts of printing. During setup, when I need to concentrate, I like calming, introspective music. Then there is printing, which is all hand-fed, one piece at a time. There are some long runs with 4,000 pieces where I’m standing for eight hours. As a child of my time, I tend to listen to ’90s music to keep me pumped up for the job.”

Wisdom “My pockets were shallow when I started. It took a lot of stubbornness. People thought I was crazy to pursue an outdated art. I’ve learned patience, steadfastness and humor in the places that aren’t so comfortable. Now, when the flywheel flies off my press I can step back and say, ‘I’ve made it this far, it’s going to be okay. It’s all part of the adventure.’ So my biggest advice is, get uncomfortable. Convenience is great, but it doesn’t lead to happiness.”

How did you get your first movie gig?

“For years, I flew for photography, video work and an episode of Wide World of Sports. In 1993, I got a call from Cliff Fleming, Hollywood stunt pilot and aerial coordinator, asking if I could come up to Libby, Montana, and help him work on The River Wild. We became best friends, and together with two other pilots, we flew four helicopters almost 1,000 hours on that movie. We flew the crews back and forth from this farmhouse to the islands at Kootenai Falls. We had to sling all the equipment in and out and fly the rafts back up the rapids along with outhouses, camera equipment and all the other gear. It was a real blast. The shoot lasted a lot of the summer. There we were, flying around with the doors off, no shirt, no shoes. It was awesome. That was the start of a 25-year career in the movies. I’ve worked on more than 50 feature movies and TV shows including Fear Factor as well as commercials. It was a great time traveling around the world.”

What are your favorite movies?

“During We Were Soldiers, Lieutenant General Hal Moore was there for a lot of the filming. I had previously flown with Ed W.'Too Tall' Freeman, one of the original pilots, who’d given me government check rides for firefighting. At that time, I had no idea who he was. Freeman and Major Bruce Crandall both received the Medal of Honor for their actions as pilots in the Battle of la Drang in South Vietnam.

It was an honor to help tell their story. It was also special to film American Sniper and tell the Chris Kyle story. We got to meet Clint Eastwood and visit with him.”

Most memorable stunts?

“Mission Impossible 3, flying through all those windmills. It was filmed along the highway in Palm Springs, and those big blades were really cranking fast.

We practiced for a couple days in the daytime, and then flew through them at night. That was something we’d never done before. In We Were Soldiers, all of our helicopters were stacked on top of each other. You had to be a lot closer for the cameras than you would be in real life. Blades overlapping blades. But all the guys I fly with are great pilots and we trust each other.”

What’s a day in the life of a movie pilot?

“There’s a lot of sitting and waiting for your turn to go flying.

Then you do your part over and over again until the director gets what they want. Any time a helicopter shows up on set there’s excitement, with the craft buzzing over and getting everybody’s heart beating faster. Now drones have taken away a lot of the commercial work that helicopters used to do. Luckily I worked during the peak era of helicopters in movies.”

What is your favorite part of flying these days?

“After more than 10,000 flight hours logged in everything from an R22 to a CH-47 Chinook, probably my favorite part is safely landing after a day of flying.”

How early were you interested in cars?

“Long before I got my driver’s license, I used to look through the J.C. Whitney automotive catalogs, writing down all the custom and high-performance parts. In my teens, I had a '56 Ford I bought from the neighbors for $15, a nice running car.

Out of high school I worked for John Bauer at his body shop, and then a year for the Merritt Brothers truck and equipment body shop.”

Where did cars lead you?

“We’ve always had one or two cars going in the corner of the hangar, some hot rod, Corvette or Camaro project I was working on. Then about 12 years ago I got a call from Chris Ledgerwood, one of the best custom car and hot rod builders in the Northwest, asking if he could come join us.

I said, absolutely! Since then, the custom and restorations we’ve completed for our customers and ourselves at Platinum Unlimited have won many awards. It’s been a great time. We’ve sold restored '67 and '68 Z28 Camaros at Barrett-Jackson, and both cars set records for that model Camaro. Last year we sold a '70 Ford Mustang Mach 1 and it also did very well.”

Who’s your better half in all this?

“My wife, Barbara, and I met at Costco 18 years ago. With the great return policy they have there, I guess we both thought we had nothing to lose! She’s a wonderful person who supports everything I do, loves all the hot rods and cars, and enjoys driving her own '69 black Mustang Fastback.”

What’s next?

“I’ve been a lucky boy, that’s for sure. And I had a lot of people help me along the way. A lot of things that most people do as a hobby, I’ve found a way to make a business out of them. I don’t sit around very well. Lately I’ve been flying Blackhawk helicopters. There are a million switches to learn, but once you get the feel of it, it’s back to the basics of flying a helicopter again. Someday soon, maybe I’ll find an island somewhere with clear blue water and warm weather. Maybe I’ll own a beach bar, or a dive shop, since I keep all my scuba instructor ratings current. I think about that little place in the islands every day...”

I Walk

I walk My legs, strong and steady, set the pace.

I walk -grateful for the air in my lungs, the glimmer of mountain lakes, the mother quail herding her chicks across the road, plume quivering.

She doesn’t walk but runs protectively behind and around them as I pass.

I walk, straight as the pines whose needles cushion my step, while geese fly above on their way south.

They honk as they jostle for position in their near-perfect V. I am thankful that I don’t have to jostle, only stutter-step to avoid divots in the country road.

I walk past the corner where the school bus used to pick up my children each morning and drop them each afternoon and reflect on those beautiful, busy days.

How is it that they both tarried and raced by so quickly?

Time does indeed fly.

I walk.

I walk the same loop that I trudged the morning of my mother’s unexpected passing, my moans of sorrow and regret mingling with the song of the whispering aspens, my feet leading me on the familiar path that my eyes, blurred with tears, could not.

I walk, alone but for my Creator, companionless but for my dog, who used to chase after deer but now feigns not to see the flock of wild turkeys prancing fretfully to our left.

She smiles up at me, happy for the opportunity to see beyond the yard, to smell the bouquet of the season, and to stretch her aging legs with me as I walk.

For Bendi Benson Schrambach, I Walk is a poem of gratitude inspired by countless outings near the Hayden home shared with her husband and their dog, Daisy.

She is fascinated by the Idaho landscape, and by the way its people persevere through the seasons of the year and the seasons of life.

“The biggest trip so far was last summer with Alli, my daughter, heading back east for some big downhill mountain bike races. We watched sunsets from the tops of mountains and camped next to waterfalls. Driving through Boston at one in the morning, the lights of the city and the bridges were beautiful when the highways were empty. There were some lightning storms going through Illinois and we pulled over to watch. That was Alli’s first time seeing fireflies. So we had to chase them around for a while.”

Simply Rich With their very own hands, they built a self-sufficient home with zero debt, plenty of sweat and many seasons of joy.

The year was 1974, and a newlywed pair of college graduates, Greg and Janet Torline, drove through Coeur d’Alene in their home-built camper rig with a dog and a cat, headed West. For Janet, who had spent summers in the Sierras and northern Maine, the pine trees and water felt instantly inviting. Greg, a carpenter, hoped to find work at Expo ’74, the first environmentally themed world’s fair.

“But it turned out those were all union jobs, and we were running out of money,” Janet recalls. “So we decided if we were going to starve to death, we would do it in a beautiful place. And we came back to Coeur d’Alene.”

They found a small rented cabin and cut their first winter’s firewood with a crosscut saw. What they sought was an uncommon life, with simple pleasures in work and nature and the traditional skills of tending a home in the wild. It was important to them both to leave a light footprint on the Earth.

They wanted, as farmer Gene Logsdon wrote for Mother Jones, “the kind of independence that defines success in terms of how much food, clothing, shelter, and contentment I could produce for myself rather than how much I could buy.”

The land was calling, and in the 1970s land in Coeur d’Alene was still remarkably affordable.

For $500 an acre, they found a hillside near Lake Coeur d’Alene they loved. It had a south-facing slope, year-round spring and, thanks to the Ice Age floods, several feet of rich, black topsoil. They pitched a wall tent and began building a homestead through the sweat of their brows.

What really made the difference was the neighbors they met. Here, incredibly, were the children and grandchildren of North Idaho’s pioneers; living, breathing treasure troves of information on everything from roof raising to food preservation.

What they sought was an uncommon life, with simple pleasures in work and nature and the traditional skills of tending a home in the wild.

“We were so fortunate to meet these people and learn so much,” Janet says. “My instant best friend Marie, born in 1901, was the sister of Swede Larson, who Swede Bay is named after. Jim and Rose Stowe of Stowe’s Mill were still alive. We became friends with Esther Dahlgren, great-aunt of Dorothy Dahlgren who now runs the Museum of North Idaho.”

Tall, straight tamarack trees made lovely beams and walls, all shaped and placed by hand.

“At first, I’m sure they all looked at us and said, ‘Uh-oh, hippies have come to North Idaho.’ But then they realized we were homesteaders, doing exactly what people did here 100 years ago: working with our hands and gradually improving the place as we had the time and resources.”

For Janet, a day’s work might mean hauling water (there was no running water for the first five years), tending the chickens, goats and garden, making a batch of cheese, washing clothes by hand and splitting shingles. “It was exactly what I’d hoped for. I felt like I’d died and gone to heaven,” she says.

For Greg, it was tilling soil, finding firewood, shoveling snow and building shelter, all while working the swing shift for Boise Cascade. (In mid-winter, Greg once blurted, “You know, this voluntary simplicity is starting to look a whole lot like poverty.”)

The young couple had their first boy, Aaron, while living in a basic 16x20-foot tarpaper shack they built on site.

“I thought the closer I could raise a child to the Earth and the woods, the better off they would be,” Janet says. “That’s what I always sought out as a child; some little thicket or creek where I was the happiest and my imagination ran free.”

“It’s not that hard,” Janet says. “You can be very comfortable and you really don’t need a bunch of stuff. But you do have to enjoy work.”

Inspired by The Good Life by Helen and Scott Nearing, they also left time for higher pursuits.

They read books, played music, held barn dances and theatre performances and organized neighborhood work parties. Greg taught the boys to hunt and fish.

“As a family, you can’t be fussing or fighting, or else you’ll starve or freeze to death,” Janet says.

“There wasn’t time for any nonsense.”

Both had careers along the way: Janet ran the Art in the Schools program and helped the late Steve Gibbs develop The Art Spirit Gallery. She is one of the driving forces behind the Gathering Garden, an educational garden on the North Idaho College campus. A program of Kootenai Environmental Alliance, it supplies NIC’s Emery's Culinary Arts restaurant with farm-to-table produce grown less than a mile from where it is prepared and eaten.

Greg worked in construction for high-end builders, and his handiwork is evident in some of Coeur d’Alene’s highest-profile homes. He is a skilled finish carpenter and self-made true jack-of-all-trades.

“During college I became fascinated with the Renaissance and the Age of Enlightenment, and these ideals continued to motivate me throughout life,” he says.

“Whenever I was confronted with something new, I’d think of those men and women of the past who probed the unknown with only their interest and confidence to guide them. I’m convinced we can all do just about anything. But we must free ourselves from self-doubt, fear of mistakes and any worry of what others might think.”

Later in life, after an injury to his dominant right hand, he re-trained himself to build with his left. His latest workshop project is building classic American flintlock long rifles by hand. He casts his own rifle balls and hunts with his own guns.

Greg still has all the hand tools he used to build their home, including an elegant Japanese carpenter’s ax, the handle stained black by countless hours of sweat from his own palms.

Wherever possible, the couple used found materials, sometimes from construction leftovers others were going to discard. The living room is sided with old art shop panels. The French front door was $35 at St. Vincent de Paul and the windows came from scrap piles.

The kitchen counter, which cost $68 in concrete from Home Depot, looks good and wears well. The most expensive item in the house is the $2,500 fridge. The kitchen island is a leftover glulam which doubles as a cutting board. Nearby, the compost drawer is right beneath the cutting surface built into the counter.

“It’s that idea that form follows function,” Greg says. “This house runs very simply with systems we can manage and fix ourselves. It really is an amazing freedom.”

“For both of us, enlightenment and wisdom come through practicality,” Janet says. “As the saying goes, ‘chop wood, carry water.’ Out here, the natural world is always presenting lessons. There’s that sense of wonder when you realize the mystery is so much bigger than you, and how astonishing and inspiring it all really is.”

Here, they live as a team, working together with the sun, rain and weather, preparing for the next season to come. They sleep outdoors at night, in a bedroom open to the air and the sound of the elements.

They share a quiet, simple joy in knowing every inch of the place with every fiber of their being. Greg and Janet have created a paradise that Thoreau, who wrote, “I make myself rich by making my wants few,” would have envied and admired.

They have a favorite evening ritual, these two practiced homesteaders. One will say to the other, “Come on, let’s have a rock.”

ow do you tackle the world’s longest off-pavement bike route?

One pedal stroke at a time!

The Great Divide Mountain Bike Route (GDMBR) runs 2,736 miles from Banff, Alberta to Antelope Wells, New Mexico. It follows the Continental Divide and crosses it 30 times, with 200,000 feet of elevation gain. Riders pass through Grand Teton National Park and the Great Divide Basin in Wyoming, Boreas Pass in Colorado and the Gila Wilderness and Chihuahuan Desert in New Mexico. Terrain includes grasslands, river valleys, mountains, forests and high desert, with 80 percent dirt and gravel roads, 10 percent singletrack and 4wd tracks and 10 percent paved. In 2009, National Geographic Adventure listed it as a top 100 best American adventure.

Barry and his friends love riding long distances and interesting challenges, the longer and more interesting the better. “It’s the kind of workout I enjoy, and it burns a lot of calories so I get to eat,” he says. “You see some good country and it’s a chance to clear my head from what I do for work” (as Kootenai County prosecuting attorney). Greg, John, Chris and Barry have been concocting challenges for years. Their so-called Triple Bypass reaches three mountaintops in Kootenai County - Canfield, Rathdrum and Blossom - in one day. “Our friend, Rob, was turning 50 and I was looking for an epic ride,” Barry says.

“I’d seen this movie about the route, Ride the Divide, so I pitched the idea of trying to knock it off in bits, since we’re all still working.”

Each year from 2012 to 2017, the group took a few days off to ride. They picked each new section according to trail conditions and weather. Most of the time Greg, Barry, John and Teresa could make the trip. The others joined when they could. “None of us were prepared to do the ride unsupported, and so it was key to have Teresa willing to drive,” Barry says. “...and cook, and keep the drinks cold,” Teresa adds. “And I made sure they showered at least every other day.” Her artful synchronicity ensured riders and truck would arrive at the same coordinates, night after night. “The logistics were pretty shaky at first, but got better as we went along,” Teresa says. “Barry and I did a lot of advance planning where we prowled over maps and tried to link up daily rides and stopovers that made sense.”

For fuel, the riders enjoyed hearty, healthy breakfasts and dinners, and gobbled almonds and Craisins by the pound as they rode. “The good news is that everybody is a good sport with a great attitude,” Teresa says. “We were all in it for the adventure, and there were a lot of laughs along the way.”

In late July of 2012, they rode their first miles, from Lake Seeley near Missoula north to the Canadian border. “We camped in the Swan River Valley, right next to a river, and it was the nicest campsite we had the whole route,” Teresa said.

The weather Barry and friends typically rode the Divide in late July or early August, figuring it was their best chance of good conditions on mountain passes. Along the way, they encountered everything from blinding snowstorms to blistering heat.

“And wind doesn’t blow, it sucks!” Greg laughs. At times, they found themselves riding (or pushing) their bikes through mud all day. Other times it was merciless sunshine and no shade. They skirted hypothermia a time or two, most notably when they went to Banff in June to make the Canadian miles. “It was 33 degrees with an icy mix coming down, and the guys were, shall we say, ill-prepared.”

Teresa says. “We actually went into the hotel to ask for the rubber gloves that housekeeping could spare,” Greg recalls.

On the very first outing, Chris announced he’d forgot ten his cycling shoes ...

It was only the beginning of things to come. There was that time they had to help undress Greg in Silverthorne, Colorado, because he was so cold and stiff. “I was starting to cry,” Greg says. “But 30 minutes later, I was feeling better in the hot tub and the next day I was ready to go again.” There were the inevitable spills and scrapes. After one crash, John was tended to by medical personnel at a Forest Service camp with unreasonable amounts of gauze, prompting giggles instead of sympathy from the rest of the crew.

“He had this hematoma sticking out like a two-pound ribeye,” Greg says with a grin. “And all those bandages looked like this crazy quilt flapping around.” Greg himself rode the entire 2,736 miles on two bad hips that kept wanting to seize up on him. “And then, on our last trip, I ended up getting a hole on my backside about the size of a half-dollar,” Greg says. “It got infected, and I had to sit on that every day. So I got real negative. I got grumpy with Barry on the day of our longest ride. I didn’t think we were ever going to get there, and Barry seemed especially cheerful, just chattering away about how we’d beat our record, riding 114 miles that day. I couldn’t even sit down on my bike saddle at that point. I was looking at the side of the road and thinking, I could just pull over, and make a little fire and just curl up, and I John, Greg, Chris, & Barry at Indiana Pass, Colorado, the highest elevation point of the trip don’t care if I ever see these guys again.”

The riders saw all kinds of interesting things.

There was the Toaster House in Pie Town, New Mexico. “It’s a home that the owners leave open, with food in the fridge, extra pairs of socks, medical stuff and beds where you can sleep,” Greg says. “Their fenceline is covered with toasters.” In New Mexico they rode by a large, irritated rattlesnake without incident. At Cabin Pass in the Canadian Rockies, they had their foulest day the first time they attempted it, and Barry & Chris waiting on John to get medical attention perhaps their finest day of riding among snow-capped peaks when they returned in 2017. They enjoyed meeting, and helping, some through-riders who were without support and at their wits end. Teresa loaded the luckless strangers down with water and sandwiches.

“When they saw our truck, they said, ‘we want to come Antelope back and do it your way,’” she recalls. There was a real Wells satisfaction in reaching Indiana Pass, Colorado, the route’s highest point at 11,910 feet. “There’s so much beautiful country,” Barry says. “It never got boring.”

Because of commitments, Chris had stayed home. “It bummed me out,” Teresa said. “I figured all the guys should be here. So I finally got Chris on Skype, just as everyone was riding up.

Natalie, Greg’s wife, had a bottle of champagne, and we sprayed them all pretty good with Chris there joining by phone. It was a pretty sweet moment.”

“In the early ’80s, Duane Hagadone became interested in purchasing the North Shore. Little did we know how much of a visionary he really was, and what great plans he had for the future of the site and the city he loved. There was a funny moment, looking back, when my manager had some issue with her two youngest busboys, Billy Reagan and Rob Elder. She told me to ‘Give them boys a talking to and set them straight!’

Turns out, I was dressing down the man who would later become my own boss at The Coeur d’Alene Resort.”

From Yvonne Parish, I learned to hold my team accountable; that their every action represents us all. Nancy White showed me the devil is in the details. He is married to Sirena Hill with two daughters, Holli and Heidi, and three grandkids, Madalyn, Kain and Kamden. “I started as a dishwasher at the convention center, and moved up to prep cook, then banquet cook and sous chef. In 1995 I was promoted to my current job where I oversee all the production for the conference center, cruise boats, golf course event center and all off-property catering.”

WHAT COULD WE ALL DO TO LIVE LONGER AND BETTER? We asked Dr. Sturges, a Coeur d’Alene family practitioner who is fascinated with longevity.

Raised abroad by missionary parents, he graduated from Loma Linda University School of Medicine and has worked in primary care and urgent care settings and his own current practice.

ANTI-AGING ADVICE WITH DR. JOHN STURGES HOW DID YOU BECOME INTERESTED IN LONGEVITY AND EMERGING THERAPIES? “It was serendipity. While attending Loma Linda University School of Medicine, I was fortunate to be introduced to a brilliant fellow classmate who was exceptionally gifted in biochemistry, James P. Watson.

After medical school our careers took us in different directions. When my wife, Jan, was diagnosed with breast cancer nine years ago, Dr. Watson and I reconnected. He specializes in plastic surgery for breast cancer patients, and he played a significant role in helping us navigate the journey. During our long conversations, I learned about his groundbreaking anti-aging research. The results were extraordinarily stimulating and I saw how thousands of lives could be changed for the better. He invited me to join one of his clinical projects in regenerative medicine,

which branched into other areas including longevity. Working with Dr. Watson connected me with innovative medical modalities in regenerative medicine and treating Alzheimers, drug and alcohol addiction, PTSD and migraine headaches. It’s been exciting to work alongside world-class physicians and researchers who are improving the future of medicine. I’ve developed a particular interest in regenerative medicine, specifically treating patients with persistent muscle and tendon strains such as tennis elbow or rotator cuff partial tears. These conditions are difficult to heal but not severe enough for surgical intervention. I’ve also found a keen interest in the use of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD).”

WHY IS NAD SO INTERESTING? “NAD is a natural product made in every human cell except brain cells, and is required for a host of metabolic processes within the body. As we age, intracellular NAD levels decline by up to 90 percent. Many other things deplete our NAD including drugs and alcohol, oxidative stress and chronic fatigue. Caloric restriction and exercise are natural ways of salvaging NAD. Yet when a patient is seriously depleted, nothing works as effectively as NAD administered intravenously. I visited Springfield Wellness Center in Louisiana, the first U.S. clinic to use intravenous NAD, and witnessed incredible results. I shared the results with Jan, thinking this treatment might help with the severe ‘chemo brain’ she sustained

WHAT ARE YOUR OWN SPECIFIC HEALTH HABITS? “I do a 36-hour weekly fast that starts Sunday evening and ends Tuesday morning. I take daily doses of Vitamin D, liposomal curcumin and JuicePlus (fruits and vegetables in capsule form), as well as a daily dose of dark chocolate. I focus on a healthy relationship with food and choosing foods that don’t increase my body’s inflammatory or diabetic response.

I get 6-7 hours of sleep, although I find getting 7 hours of sleep is difficult, especially when medical breakthroughs are rapidly occurring! I do weight lifting with a trainer and cardio exercise, a nightly hot tub soak and regular brain stimulation through reading and researching.”

Take 2 oz. premium vodka, ½ oz. triple sec (I use Cointreau), 1 oz. simple syrup (boil equal parts sugar and water) and 1 oz. or more lemon juice. Combine all ingredients in a shaker with ice, mixing glass secured on top, and shake briskly.

Moisten rim with lemon wheel and dip in Sugar in the Raw. Strain into the glass and garnish with a twist.

GRADS IN DEMAND “There are more than 7,000 science, technology, engineering and manufacturing (STEM) jobs unfilled in Idaho and more every day," Shovic says. "One of the hottest job sectors nationwide is computer science, particularly in the areas of robotics and artificial intelligence (AI). It’s interesting, exciting work that leads to good jobs at a really good salary."

ROBOTS ON THE RISE “We have been a mechanically and computer oriented society for many years now, so robots working in large factories is nothing new. What is new is that robots are gaining new capabilities, sometimes through the use of artificial intelligence techniques, and even more important, rapidly declining costs for really good robotics hardware.”

DO ROBOTS THREATEN OUR JOBS? “Society has been busily automating for years and there are more people employed than ever. Yes, some jobs go away, but more jobs come into being. And robotics reduces the cost of goods made which translates into less expensive products which benefits all consumers.”

IS AI READY TO RUN THE WORLD? “Not yet. Artificial intelligence techniques continue to get better, and one of the goals of our program is to make sure that our students know how to use these techniques and improve upon them for the next generation of robots and machines. Do we have intelligent machines yet? Not even close. But we do have AI programs that can do some difficult things.”

BAXTER THE BARISTA “Baxter is our primary robot of choice, funded in part with help from the Jacklin family, with two highly flexible arms with cameras so he can ‘see’ what’s going on. He’s a Cobot, a collaborative robot that can work next to people without danger, since he senses the surroundings and stops before he runs into them. Our students recently taught Baxter to make coffee using a Keurig machine. It took most of the semester, with 75 steps we had to program him to perform.”

GIZMO SUBMARINE “Gizmo, the Coeur d’Alene makerspace, is a great partner organization. Our joint project is building an autonomous underwater vehicle to perform analysis of the bottom of lakes in North Idaho and eventually the Snake River. We are looking to understand changes in the lower depths of the lakes that may bring up lead and mercury contamination.”

The 20-acre Hagadone Gardens include 24 ponds, 34 waterfalls and five acres of lush green turf, set between dazzling lake and deep green woods.

he Hagadone Gardens collection includes a wide variety of plants carefully selected for their beauty and unique color displays and smells. Some of these groupings, including 16 fully developed hosta plants, won’t be found anywhere else in the Northwest.

A staff of seven botanists and groundskeepers work throughout the year to tend to the specialized needs of different species.

While the gardens are not open to the public, owners Duane and Lola Hagadone have occasionally hosted summer fundraisers for local causes they hold dear to their hearts.

This is a special place, created by a couple who believe gardening is the simplest, purest form of human pleasure.

Bursts of color come from thousands of blossoms including white annabelle hydrangea contrasted with red geraniums, the owner's favorite flower.
