Throughout the month of May we are celebrating our devotion to Mary, the mother of Jesus. It is an important part of both the Marist and Sion charism that we recognise that Mary has a central role to play in assisting us to reflect on our own challenges in life. Throughout this month classes and reflective prayers at the College are recognising the assistance Mary can provide within our daily life. It was great to see so many parents and students attending our recent Parent Student Teacher interviews. The process of reporting back to parents and students is an invaluable one in assisting students to move forward in their learning goals. The College is currently investigating the possibilities of expanding this reporting process to parents and students so that a more detailed discussion can take place. The development of a learning plan for each student that has been contributed to by the student, parent and College is a proven method of focusing students on not only their learning goals but also their behaviour and social interaction. The College is examining how such a program can be introduced to our community either through a stage presentation or a full implementation at one time.

Students continue to be actively involved in a significant number of extra curricular activities including music, sport, camps and the arts. Last Friday a large number of students participated in a musical evening for the Cathedral Parish. The depth of talent and commitment by both individual students and staff was outstanding. Special thanks to Ann Roffe, Peter Centra and their team for organising such a great evening. Our College football team, both boys and girls, have enjoyed success in recent weeks and will progress to the next level of their competitions. Congratulations to all students in their respective sports whether they are achieving individually or in teams. Success is achieved through participation, not necessarily the end result.

A reminder that the College Council AGM st will take place on the 21 June. The College Council provides valuable support to the College by being an active participant within decision making processes for the College. Parent contribution to the College council is invaluable in ensuring that the College is always catering for community needs within its planning. I strongly encourage anyone who is considering nominating for the College Council to contact myself or a current Council member if you have any questions. Nominations close on Monday rd 23 May. (Please see information in this newsletter.) The Wellington Catholic Schools association will celebrate a Peace Day Mass on Friday 3 June. This mass brings together students from St Thomas‟s and St Mary‟s Primary School Sale, St Mary‟s Primary School Maffra, St Mary‟s Primary School Yarram, St Patrick‟s Stratford & St Michael‟s Heyfield as well as students from Catholic College Sale (nearly 2000 students in all). FOCUS ON YOUTH DEPRESSION Catholic College Sale‟s blue house group –Paulinus - held a „Paulinus Youth Beyond Blue Week‟ event from Monday 16 – Friday 20 May. This event, held in partnership with Beyond Blue, included various lunchtime activities as well as class time. Youth Beyond Blue prefers awareness raising and moral boosting activities over raising monetary funds for their events. With this in mind, students took part in various activities as selected by the Paulinus House student leaders. Activities included bike riding, pilates, cooking, meditation, knot tying, initiative activities and many other stimulating group leisure activities. Paulinus House Student Leader Jess Rodaughan said she is passionate about the project, “I really like the fact that we are not just raising funds but actually raising awareness and getting directly involved”. Youth beyond Blue recommends that to get the most out of life, we need to keep our minds and bodies healthy now and in the future. They list a few simple things that can help including finding ways to relax and manage stress (e.g. playing a musical instrument or going for a walk) and thinking positively and speaking to ourselves in a helpful way. The theme for the week is „With my own two hands’ suggesting that everyone has the ability and responsibility to look out for each other and be aware of the signs of depression. If you or someone you know may be suffering from depression or anxiety please visit www.youthbeyondblue.com for more information.

“STICKS AND STONES”: A play about non-violent conflict resolution. st

On June the 1 , Brainstorm Productions, an award winning production company, will be presenting the play “Sticks and Stones” to the year 7 and 8 students. This play is a realistic and powerful story about two young people and the different forms of bullying that they experience in the playground, in the street and at home. The play highlights some of the complex issues involved in conflict resolution, but provides the students with strategies in anger management, assertiveness, conflict resolution and breaking the cycle of violence. School yard scenarios are used to encourage students to have empathy for victims, and to understand that bullying of any kind is not on. The hard hitting play also has circus skills and juggling to demonstrate co-operation and control.

The message is clear - Violence is not on - at school, at home, on the street, or anywhere. Classroom activities relating to the play will follow and later in the term bullying surveys will be completed to support and assist any student who may be experiencing any bullying behaviour from other students. If you have any concerns in relation to bullying behaviour, please contact me on 51439 614 at the Sion campus for a confidential discussion about how to best resolve the issue. “WISE UP TO IT” CYBERSAFETY PROGRAM FOR YEAR 7 AND 8 COMPUTER CLASSES Over the next few weeks, I will be visiting Ms Viljoens Year 7 and 8 computer classes and will be presenting important information to students on cyber bullying, online stalking, internet security, online grooming and sexting. I will be using an excellent program called “Wise up to it”, produced by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA). It provides valuable information to young people about how to use the internet in a safe manner and provides clear guidelines when using chat lines, posting pictures and providing personal information. While the internet can be a great tool for research, communication and entertainment, we have all heard about the risks and the serious consequences that may follow, if young people do not maintain a balanced approach and follow certain guidelines. If you would like further information about the “Wise up program” and its content, please contact me on 51439 614. Mary McNally Student Counselor Sion Campus

Careers/Pathways News As the year moves into the Second Term, the Pathways Team is also moving into a very busy period. Year 12s are able to pre order the 2012 VTAC Guide so that they will have these on hand when choosing which courses they might like to enroll in for 2012. It is an exceptional resource for looking at all the possibilities and comparing courses. If students order through the school the cost of the Guide is a little less than purchasing a copy from the newsagents. Universities will soon be advertising their Open Days and as usual we strongly encourage the Year 11s to get involved and get out there looking at various educational providers and checking out courses. Year 11s can then plan their courses and take into consideration the prerequisites they need. This means that they make better choices regarding the subjects they will study in Year 12. Year 12‟s can make a final check of the universities that interest them and perhaps while they are down there take the time to

check out the area for accommodation and transport options.

LOTE - Auslan There has been lots of noise in the Auslan classes over the last two weeks! Students learnt some children‟s nursery rhymes then used examples from the songs in discussion about the grammatical differences between Auslan and English. Students then worked on translations of songs of their own choice – they chose a song, looked up new vocabulary then videoed themselves „sign singing‟ the song. This activity has increased their sign vocabulary, ability to think of alternative ways of explaining a concept, shown their understanding of some of the grammatical differences between English and Auslan, and demonstrated their accuracy in signing ... and has been a lot of fun! Since the introduction of Auslan in 2008, the subject continues to grow and to inspire students at the College. The knowledge of Auslan presents opportunities for students to become involved in the local community, encourages greater tolerance and understanding of others and provides students with a great range of career choices. Students are encouraged to teach their family members and friends, strengthening the community in the process. Auslan can be a great assistance for students with literacy issues as it requires visual learning to compliment written learning. A personal student laptop program has been introduced this year and each term a member of the local Deaf Community is invited to classes to share their experiences and skills with the students. Currently two students are currently undertaking the Diploma of Auslan at GippsTAFE to compliment what they learn at school. The demand for interpreters, particularly in the Gippsland Region, is much greater than supply and the demand is growing. Students of Auslan can forge careers in the education sector, the disability sector, government and private interpreting to name just a few industries. It is fantastic that Auslan is capturing the imagination of many students and broadening their view of what is possible in the future. Gail Perry Auslan Teacher

CCS Competes For Cooking Title Catholic College Sale, Year 10 and 11 Food Technology students took an excursion with a number of keen staff to the 2011 East Gippsland Field Days at the Bairnsdale Aerodrome. The aim of the day was to compete in the Field Days‟ School Cook-Off which was a great success as reported by the students themselves……….. As we came in through the main entrance we could see a number of stalls and promotions set up around us from farm animals to the Government‟s Centrelink display. We had time to explore around us and view the intriguing information displays and purchase products from the stalls before we were introduced to the cooking area. This is where we would compete in a cook off against other secondary schools, with the help of the very engaging celebrity chef Dario.

chef Dario D‟agostino. The students competing had to previously organise a recipe including beef and vegetables. There were amazing dishes that were served up and Dario was impressed with all of us and how knowledgeable we were when it came to cooking. We were all winners and did exceptionally well. Overall the day was a huge success, we the students and teachers came out feeling as though we had benefited from the day and enjoyed our time spent there. With the help from Chef Dario the cooking from all students was at a very high standard and we were able to learn new skills in our cooking techniques for back at home and school. The wide variety of agricultural and non-agricultural displays and stalls left us with more information and ideas to bring back with us. We are all grateful to have had the opportunity to visit the East Gippsland Field Days, which was a new and fun way to partake in our education. Stephanie Dessent and Bethany Collett Year 11

The East Gippsland Field Days is a great day out for all ages. There are so many interactive activities and displays that can be enjoyed, from East Gippsland Tafe stalls providing information and guidance on which path to take for anybody‟s future careers, to fashion shows, cake stalls and even a variety of farm animals for the children to enjoy. Our bus full of students was enthusiastic to compete in the Cook Off with Melbourne celebrity

Shakespeare Community Play Past and present Catholic College students performed in the Shakespeare Community Play „Directed by Darren McCubbin for the th Shakespeare on the River Festival from which ran from 5 to 15th May 2011. Visitors travelled from all over Victoria to be entertained by our young local talented artists. Bri Hassett, Castelle Dugan, Lilly Werner, Molly Coleman and Brittany Telfer were just a few of the cast and crew members participating in the five shows being performed at the Stratford Courthouse Theatre. The final show on Sunday 15 May was a complete sell out, a testament to the talent on display.

College Football Catholic College Sale First XV111 is taking part in the School Sport Victoria Premier League Football Competition during 2011. Following the restructure of the Herald Sun Shield competition for this year CCS was required to apply to SSV for entry into the elite football competition. The application required schools to have maintained a high standard of performance over the past 10 years and to be currently running a dedicated Sports Academy in AFL Football. This has ensured that the football played will be of a very high standard. CCS has spent the past few years in the top tier of the Herald Sun Shield competition competing against schools from the ACC sports organization. CCS has enjoyed success winning a number of games against some quality opposition from schools such as St Bede's, St Bernard's, and St Joseph's Geelong. The first game of the competition was held th at the Sale oval on the 4 of May against Box Hill Secondary College. The game was fast paced and skillful with neither side able to break away on the scoreboard in the early stages. Gradually CCS gained the ascendancy due to some clever work in the mid field by Cam Garrett, Adam Wallace and Will Hams. John Mc Intyre and Captain Jack Johnstone were great targets in the forward line whilst Andrew Phelan, James Read and Brendan Little proved miserly in defence repelling Box Hill attacks. At the main break CCS held a rd handy 24 lead. The all important 3 quarter saw CCS extend their lead to 36 points. CCS ran away with the game in the final term booting 7 goals to run out 67 point winners.

CCS will now play Hallam Secondary College at Shepley Oval (Home to the Dandenong Stingrays in the TAC Cup) on June 8th with the game beginning at 1pm. Thanks to Sale football club committee members for preparing the oval and President Scott Pearce for allowing the school to use the clubs facilities. Coach Anthony Robbins is hoping the side will continue to be competitive at this level and says that the next few years look promising for the school and its Football success.

Athletics Carnival On the first Monday of Term Two, students and staff braved the elements to conduct the Annual Catholic College Athletics Carnival. Despite steady drizzle for most of the morning, there was a positive and co-operative spirit displayed as students competed enthusiastically in the usual range of track and field events. Many teachers commented that they did not hear any complaining among the students – most seemed to enjoy the opportunity to participate, move around and observe their peers in action. The BBQ fund-raiser run by the Year 10 Human Powered Vehicle group and Mrs Armstrong‟s canteen proved to be very successful and popular as appetites were heightened by the wintery weather. Paulinus (Blue)House, captained by Jess Rodaughan and John McIntyre (St Pats),Joel Szalanda and Paige Robinson (Sion), broke a long drought to record a convincing first time win over second place, Theodore (Purple). On the day, five records listed below were broken: Y12 Leroy McLennan - 1500m, Y12 Ashlee Kelly - Shot Put Y10 Sam Tselepis - Triple Jump Y9 Lauren Hepworth - High Jump Y9 Logan Kelly - High Jump Congratulations to Age Champions: Year 7 Girls – Paige Biddle Year 8 Girls - Erica Thompson Year 9 Girls – Stephanie Bain Year 10 Girls – Samantha Kennedy Year 11 Girls – Georgia Andrews Year 12 Girls – Sarah McLinden

Many students have now been selected to represent Catholic College at the State Schools Victoria interschool competition which was held on May 19 at Newborough. Results to follow in next Newsletter.

Sports Aerobics and Cheerleading Catholic College has had a number of successful entries into Sport and Dance Aerobics in past years, including reaching the Australian Aeroskools Championships in 2010. Girls from both campuses have expressed interest (no doubt partly inspired by „Glee‟) in training for competitive Sport Aerobics and/or Cheerleading, with a long-term goal of representing the College in state competitions, as well as displays at school events such as „Art and Soul‟. As with any such technical sports, a commitment to regular training sessions and appropriate exercise and drills at home is essential. We are able to offer qualified and experienced coaching for interested girls from Years 7 to 12 by Ms Judith Gillen. Judith is a qualified Sports Aerobics Coach, VCE Dance Teacher, and Jazz Ballet Teacher and has also been a judge to international levels in both sports. Cheerleading – will focus on key physical and dance skills, building up team work and routines. It is not envisaged that students would enter competitions this year, but would work towards future years. Students and parents should be aware that there are a number of sections in Cheerleading competitions and our focus will be on Pom, Hip Hop and Jazz areas, not Stunt / Tumbling. Squads rather than teams would be built up over this year. There will be no initial cost to participants to attend training. Further information will be distributed about purchasing of Poms later in the year. No uniforms or any other gear will need to be purchased in 2011. Sport Aerobics – will focus on key Aerobics skills and the learning of set routines. Participants will have the opportunity to enter at least one competition this year. Training Sessions are anticipated to be held on Fridays from 3:45 to 5:15pm at Bishop Phelan Stadium. For further information please contact Judith Gillen on 51439 795.
