Friday 23rd September Last day of Term 3 2:20pm finish

The College is a hive of industry at the moment as we race into the last three weeks of term 3. Where is the year going? Over the next three weeks all Unit 3 and 4 subjects will be completing their course of study. Practise exams will be offered during the term holidays, as a strong support to the revision process necessary to ensure students receive their best result with external assessment. As a College we strongly encourage our Year 12 students to take every opportunity to focus on the best preparation possible, so that they may have the best possible choices for the future pathway development, after completing their studies. Currently the Leadership staff are busy working, not only on the final stages of this year, but detailed planning for 2012. The College will welcome eight streams of Year 7 onto the Sion Campus. This will necessitate not only the continual upgrading of our classrooms, but also the expansion of our Technology facilities especially in Home Economics and Woodwork. The number of senior classes will be expanded as we increase our number of VCE subjects and Vocational, Educational and Training subjects both on and off Campus. A review is currently being conducted into the Year 9 programme to ensure there is a continuation of student centered learning and experiences. Within the next few years the College will need to expand its Technology facilities on the Senior Campus to ensure Vocational Education and Training Engineering and Automotive can be offered in modern facilities on Campus. The College is also moving to provide

enhanced programmes for students, parents and staff to ensure a breadth of understanding of our Marist Charism and Sion Heritage. This will see not only lecture programmes and curriculum focused objectives, but also the visualisation and key representation of our Marist and Sion Heritage. ‘I AM STRONG OF MIND, GENTLE OF HEART AND LOVED BY GOD” Chris Randell Principal

“I AM SPECIAL AND I’M OK” Each of us has been specially created, Lord. You have made us all different and special. No one is exactly like me As I grow up, help me to like myself for the person I am and know that I’m OK. May I remember, Lord that there is no point in comparing myself with others, for each of us is good, yet different and created in Your likeness.

Amen.

Monash Gippsland hosted our 170+ Year 9 students for a day program on Friday 26th August. The purpose of the program was to encourage Year 9â€&#x;s to explore all their pathway options as they head into their senior years of schooling. It was appropriate timing, given the recent subject selection process and many of our students were familiar with the terms used due to their participation in a core Careers program. Guiseppe and his team of Monash students took small groups on a tour of the Gippsland campus and each spoke candidly of their experience and pathway to university. Year 9â€&#x;s were able to soak up some of the ambience of university life. In a film evaluation on the way home a number of students commented that they had enjoyed the day and had learnt something about their own decision making. One student indicated that prior to the experience university was not a consideration for him, however now it is. The College recognises the importance of arming our young people with knowledge and opportunities to discern their own ways into the future, and to be aware of the many possibilities that are open to them! Thank you to Beverley Richard, our Pathways Co-ordinator, and Judith Gillen and Scott Fitzgerald, our Middle School Teaching and Learning Leaders, for preparing such a valuable experience for our Year 9 cohort. Julia Wake Director of Teaching and Learning.

Last week we had a parent guest speaker come into the Year 9 Food Technology class. Mr Greg Bailey taught us how to use knives correctly and the importance of the safety with knives. We learned knife handling skills and discussed different types of knives and what they can be used for. There are different types of grips you can use for cutting food and he showed us how to keep the tip of the knife on the board when we cut the food. He also showed us how to use a steel to sharpen a knife. We talked about what jobs you can get in cooking, such as a becoming a chef or cook. Mr Bailey told us about his job at Sodexo working in the kitchen on an oil rig and what rules are set out for him, such as safety and hygiene practices. He also told us about his protective uniform and why he wears the different garments and protective footwear. Mr Bailey taught us great life skills that we can use for the future in the Food Tech room and at home. He is coming back this week to check on our progress and observe our cooking skills. We thank Mr Bailey for giving up his time to spend with us and teach us new skills. We will certainly use these skills in our everyday lives. For Year 12 students the year is rapidly ending with only a brief revision period of school time remaining in term 4. These upcoming holidays are critical in regard to examination preparation. Often it is also a „dangerous‟ period due to the pleasant weather after the winter months. The temptation to enjoy the weather rather than study is far too strong for many students. During the second week of the school holidays, trial examinations will be held from Monday 3rd October to Thursday th 6 October. These trial exams are crucial for students in their preparation for exams and will allow them to identify any areas of weakness. It is important that students attend all of their trial examinations. A letter and exam timetable has been posted home. Many of our students have laid the foundation to do very well in their exams. For those that have struggled at times, there is still an excellent opportunity to take advantage of these holidays and increase their score. Best wishes to all in the weeks ahead and remember; “If you don‟t change direction, you‟ll wind up exactly where you‟re heading.” Ken Holmes Senior School Teaching and Learning Leader

On the 24th of August students at Catholic College had an opportunity to raise some funds for Beyond Blue and also for the Cancer Council, Daffodil day, by donating a gold coin for an out of uniform day and a sausage sizzle/food stalls. Students did a brilliant job cooking sausages, with over 450 sausages sold for $1.00 at the Sion campus and many more sold at the St Pats campus. One boy excitedly told his teachers that he had eaten eight sausages and given three others to his mates! Most students brought in their gold coin donation for out of uniform to their pastoral teacher which meant that the total amount of money raised for Beyond Blue was close to $2,000. Fantastic effort by all of those students and staff who organized the event. It was also great to see so many students wearing something blue to support the Beyond Blue awareness “seek help” program and it was also a great show of support for many of our students and families who may have experienced depression and anxiety at some stage in their lives. Depression and anxiety are among

the most common mental health problems experienced by young people. Often the symptoms are not recognized or are passed over as “just a part of growing up”. www.youthbeyondblue.com, is an excellent web site, providing information and support to young people and parents, and encourages young people to LOOK (look for the signs), LISTEN (to your friends experiences), TALK (about what‟s going on) and SEEK HELP (together) Should any parent or young person wish to discuss any concerns, or would like to obtain any written resources on anxiety and depression, please contact Mary McNally (Sion Student Counselor) or Evelyn Swiety (St Pats, Student Wellbeing Cocoordinator) Mary McNally Student Counselor Sion Campus

Term Three is living up to its reputation as the busiest term in the School year! We are in the middle of an eclectic mix of musical events and are enjoying the fruits of some hard work in the first half of the year. Yarram Eisteddfod results: Congratulations to all participants in the Yarram Eisteddfod!!! There were some outstanding individual performances, some of which received the following placings: 1st places to: Taylah Browne, Jo Anderson, Hadis Jalilehvand; 2nd places to: Sean Duivenvoorden, Ally Orr, Jo Anderson, Kelly Robinson (Intermediate Championship); 3rd places to: Ally Orr (Intermediate Championship), Hannah Robbins, Kathryn Pickett, Kelly Robinson; H.M.s to: Ruby Lappin-Lee, Sarah Bennett. These individual sections were large, with up to 13 competitors in each. The choir came 1st in their section, the rd nd Concert Band 3 , the Strings H.M., and our duets/trios 2 , rd 3 and H.M. respectively. Latrobe Valley Eisteddfod: This Eisteddfod is underway as this is being written with the vocal section showcasing Lilly Werner who took away a 1st, 3rd and H.M. in her sections. The instrumental sections are on Thursday and Saturday and we wish our musicians all the best for their performances. CCS Battle of the Bands: With the postponement of the Art and Soul Festival to later in the year the VCE/VET students needed a major event to organise to complete a core Unit of their coursework. They came up with the inaugural CCS Battle of the Bands which took place in the pastoral period in week 4. The criterion was that all band members had to be from CCS, and solo singers with instrumental backing were also eligible. Gippsland Music and Sound generously donated some awesome prizes including an ipod recording device, microphones, guitar tuners and discount vouchers. The event was an overwhelming success – the five bands and five solo artists were from all year levels and had the whole of St Pats campus captivated with the incredibly high standard of their performances. Josh Cashman took out 1st prize, with Amy Dowd and Mere Pritchett 2nd and the Year 7 rd Rock Band fronted by pocket dynamo Tina Bartle coming 3 . The whole event ran smoothly, and was a credit not only to the performers, but to the VCE/VET students as well. It will now be a fixture on the school calendar for next year!

Deepblue is a modern string orchestra that was a semi-finalist on Australia‟s Got Talent. They are performing at the Esso BHP Billiton Wellington Entertainment Centre on Tuesday of this week, and some of our string players are attending a workshop with them and joining them in performance. VicOpera is also in town this Tuesday with their information and audition night for their upcoming local production of Brundibar , a children‟s opera. Again, several of our students will be involved. It is exciting that such events can occur in the country and I urge as many people as possible to take up any further such opportunities as they arise. Recruitment: Yes – it is always time to start learning an instrument!!!! I am putting a special call out for lower string instruments – we can offer violas, cellos and double bass. Please see Ms Roffe if you are interested in any instrument and/or pick up application forms from the offices at either campus. Ann Roffe Head of Music

Sion Performing Arts: Last week the Sion Performing Arts was held and the standard of acts this year was outstanding. All styles of Performing Arts were on display, with the solo dancers in particular of a much higher standard than in previous years. Drama skits, beat box, solo voice, instrumentalists, guitarists, dance, and House choirs featured with the overall winner being Champagnat, breaking a long drought. The VCE/VET students ran the tech side immaculately but the real winners were the participants, many of whom were performing for the first time. Congratulations to all involved – you showed that we as a school have much to be proud of.

On the 1st of September, a mixed group of year 12, 11 and 10 literature students travelled down to Melbourne, to experience a day of the Melbourne Writers Festival. We arrived at Federation Square, for the first session, a live poetry performance by Luke Wright and Tim Claire. Both these poets were highly entertaining, with their performance being an interesting experience, broadening our understanding of poetry and how it can be delivered to an audience. The last session we attended was an open interview with Steven Amsterdame and Malie Meloy, who delivered a session called Writer‟s and their craft. This session, with the two authors, delved into how to actually write a book, and the process the authors have to go through in order to have their work published. This was, for we students, a really intriguing session. We were able to learn the step by step guide on how to lay out a book, and write it start to finish. Once the interview was over, the audience was able to ask questions of the authors, with a student from our group asking the first question.

Tim Claire

All in all, the trip to the Melbourne Writers Festival was a great success with many students looking forward to next year, and also being able to put to use what was learnt during our time there. Catholic College Sale Lauren Reitchel and Georgia Minter Year 8 Students Present

TEAM SEASON REVIEWS Under 14 Blue: Under 16:

The Under 16 team had a wonderful season and was very unlucky not to progress to the Grand Final being narrowly defeated in the preliminary final by Sale City. They also had a narrow defeat in the second semi final to eventual Premier Nambrok, who had a great season and deserved their victory. Thanks to Steve Turner and his brother Carl who guided the team throughout the season. Their efforts were outstanding and we were very lucky to have such dedicated coaches. They were ably supported by Michael Briggs who did a great job as team manager. Congratulations also to Brenton Rees who was runner up in the Leagueâ€&#x;s Best and Fairest Award, finishing second to winner Adam Diamond from Nambrok Newry/Rosedale by one vote.
