“Our aim is to form good Christians and good citizens” Father Marcellin Champagnat, was a peasant from the region of southern France near Lyons. He was born in 1789, the year of the French Revolution and died from cancer in 1840. His father was the local revolutionary official. His mother and aunt (a nun hiding from the revolution in his father‟s house!) were remarkable spiritual influences on the young man.

Father Champagnat was not an education theoretician, but he had a profound feeling for life. He was an outstandingly simple man, wholly given to direct action. His simplicity and outgoing personality quite naturally oriented his sympathies towards young people and their education. A special Place for the Poor Like most of the great religious Founders of the nineteenth century, Father Champagnat was primarily motivated by the need to bring education, especially a religious education, to the poorest sections of society, in his case the rural poor of post-revolutionary France. Ever since, his Brothers have had a special place in their schools for the poor, whatever kind of poverty (material, spiritual, physical, emotional or intellectual) they experience. Catholic College Sale strives to meet Marcellin Champagnat‟s high ideals for a good education for all young people. rd

On Friday 3 June Wellington Catholic Schools gathered to celebrate a Peace Mass in the Bishop Phelan Stadium.

June 8th 2011

Six primary schools, St Mary‟s Maffra, St Mary‟s Sale, St Mary‟s Yarram, St Michael‟s Heyfield, St Patrick‟s Stratford and St Thomas‟ Sale, gathered together with students from Catholic College Sale to pray for Peace. Our Mass was celebrated by the Most Rev Christopher Prowse DD, Bishop of Sale and was cocelebrated by Fr Andrew Wise. Our celebration was about each student stating loud and clear that in their thoughts, in their words, in their actions and in their prayers they would achieve peace in their heart, their family, their community and in the world. Each member of our community has the right to enjoy peace in their world and as the symbol of hands that we used in the celebration each student has the right and duty to work towards achieving peace. “I have no hands but yours” Our Lord uses our hands to do his good works. Let us use our hands, our thoughts and our actions to achieve peace in our lives. Next week some senior students will sit external VCE exams. We wish them all the best and hope they will receive the results they have worked so hard to achieve. Chris Randell Principal

Peace Mass 2011 In an ever changing and complex world, more than Two Thousand Catholic Primary and Secondary students came together to pray for peace in the world at the celebration of Catholic College Sale‟s annual rd Peace Mass on Friday 3 June at 11am. The Peace Mass is held annually in the Bishop Phelan stadium at Catholic College Sale and was celebrated by Bishop of the Sale Diocese, Bishop Prowse. The College has been celebrating the Peace Mass for the past seven years and was the inspiration of teachers at the College after the tragedy of the Bali bombings. The concept is to bring the community together in a Christian way, to spread the Word of Peace and to acknowledge the fact that peace begins with the individual. The hope is that after the students and staff come together to pray for Peace in the school community, the idea will filter through to the greater community and beyond. Students from Catholic Primary schools travelled from Yarram, Heyfield, Maffra, and Stratford to join their Sale counterparts and come together to pray for peace in our lives and in the world. This moving and memorable occasion also provides an opportunity for the students to appreciate that they are part of a larger Catholic student community.

Port to Swing Bridge Challenge

Catholic College Sale‟s rowing program is off and racing again with a challenge from the Port of Sale to the Swing Bridge and back. The Port of Sale to Swing Bridge challenge covers 9km with the winning boat finishing in 53 minutes, shaving 4 minutes off the 2010 record. There were four boats racing which included a mixture of students and staff, with parent helpers coaching and cooking the post-race BBQ. It was a great day.

Winners Josh Short, Tyson Hawkins Brendan Gray and Todd Erskine

The College has had a strong rowing history and is fortunate to have a well stocked rowing shed full of equipment. Currently, there are 15 students involved in the rowing program which is open to students from Year 7 – 12. The season runs from September to April each year and specialised coaching is provided. „Come along and try‟ sessions are held at the beginning of the season each year, so why not have a go? For more information see Ms Perry or watch the website.

Open Day The College recently welcomed Grade Five and Six students from across the region to our annual Open Day. Open Day provides a great opportunity for the community to view the College‟s wonderful resources and the many newly renovated facilities. It also provides an invaluable opportunity to meet and chat with the College staff and see our students at work.

Speakers from Open Day

Open Day gives the public a chance to wander around and see the students as they engage in learning and discover their individual pathways. In the past, many prospective parents and students have taken the opportunity to attend the information sessions and take guided tours of the Sion Campus. Following the success of a new format in 2010, this year‟s Open Day information sessions were held in Bishop Phelan Stadium at St Patrick‟s Campus and were followed by guided tours of both St Patrick‟s and Sion Campus‟.

Many people have had the opportunity to tour around the Sion Campus on previous Open Days, but few have taken the opportunity to visit St Pat‟s Campus. Most people are familiar with the historic St Pat‟s building which dates back to 1922, but are unaware of the number of high-tech teaching facilities inside, including the recently renovated Science Labs, a cutting edge Art and Technology Department and the Bishop Phelan Stadium. A number of our students acted as tour guides on the day and were not only well received by the public, but a credit to themselves. Well done!

University Of The Third Age I recently went and spent time at the University of the Third Age (U3A) in Sale. This was a part of my Social Justice Project, supported by Global Youth Impact run by the International Women‟s Development Agency (IWDA). U3A is a community for people of retirement age who want to come together to try new things and make new friends. Whilst there, I learnt about what they do and the kinds of activities they run. They hold day or overnight excursions to various tourist spots. They also hold up to twelve classes a week, such as computing, languages, meditation, exercise, history and many others. Guest speakers come and present to them, or a member of the U3A community will speak to the others about experiences in their life and to share their own knowledge. They have a wonderful environment at U3A that just feels like they are one, big family. I was happy I got to be part of the group for a day. I encourage any young girls going into Year 10 or 11 next year to apply for Global Youth Impact (http://globalyouthimpact.org.au/main/) and to look into the work of IWDA (http://www.iwda.org.au/au/). Or follow me on Twitter (http://twitter.com/girlsforchange). Emily Mogridge Year 11

Careers/Pathways News Here we are in the middle of the year and time is just flying by. A few quick notices to begin. The Police Recruitment Team will be in th Sale on 4 August at 6pm at the Hacienda Motor Inn Conference Centre. They will be available to speak about careers in the Police Force. Further information and other requirements can be investigated on the web site: police.vic.gov.au . Arrangements with Flair have contacted the school asking if there are any students who would like to do work experience in a florist shop. This is a work area which is often overlooked and it does offer apprenticeships for people who want to work in this field. Arrangements with Flair suggest that if someone is”… imaginative, open minded and don‟t mind getting their hands dirty,” then they would love the chance to show young people what the florist industry has to offer. Please remember that all the Universities are coming up to the open day season. It is wise for students to identify those Universities that they are interested in and check the times for Open Days. Quite a few of the Universities have multiple campuses and so they may not have one single day. Others have all campuses and all courses in one venue. So a check is a good idea. Once again we recommend that students begin the process of looking at Uni‟s and checking out different aspects of life at University as early as Year 10and Year 11 rather than in Year 12. For instance Deakin University have a Year 10 information evening on June th 15 , which by the time it arrives into the school, doesn‟t allow for you to get this information from your newsletter. So you and your student might benefit from checking web sites to see what‟s on particularly at this time of the year. As often as possible students in Year 11 and 12 are sent group emails with some of this information contained in them and students are reminded to check their school emails. Students in Year 12 who are thinking

about courses which require them to sit the University Medical Admissions Test (UMAT) need to be aware that they are responsible for arranging this. There is a cost and it must be done shortly. Students who need to do this will know if they have checked the prerequisites for the courses they are looking at as well as checking the extra requirements section in the VTAC Guide. Parents are also reminded that there is a parent information th evening on July 26 in St Mary‟s Hall at 7pm. This is an opportunity to hear information and ask questions. This is the same evening as the Parent/Student/Teacher interviews in the Bishop Phelan Stadium, so please consider this if you are affected and you are booking interview. As was mentioned at a recent meeting I attended, our students of today have fabulous choices and that is a good thing, but the down side is that the student must be on top of all these different choices and finding out and deciding for

themselves. This is a dreadful responsibility, and a great excitement, as the students takes charge of their own life. We are organizing a Year 9 Pathways evening to be held on st June 21 . This is an opportunity for parents and other interested people to come to a presentation regarding pathways through the school for students. Topics covered will be explaining the VCE and VCAL, as well as a look at School Based Apprenticeships and the role of Vocational Education and Training in Schools (sometimes referred to by the students as Tafe or Vet) with a chance to ask questions. Parents can then book an interview online in the following week to speak to a qualified Careers Practioner. Always happy to talk careers and Pathways, and will write again soon. Bev Richard Pathways Co-ordinator

Year 9 Careers interviews for Catholic College Sale will be held between on th th th Tuesday 28 , Wednesday 29 & Thursday 30 June 2011 in the Careers rd Room John 23 building. You can now book interviews for the times that suit you. Go to www.schoolinterviews.com.au and follow these simple instructions. BOOKINGS OPEN Wednesday 22nd June 2011. Go to www.schoolinterviews.com.au and enter our school code. Then follow the 3 simple steps.

5376P When you click finish, your interview timetable will be emailed to you automatically. If something comes up you can return to www.schoolinterviews.com.au and change your interviews until bookings close. For Parents that don‟t have internet access, you can phone the school on 5143 9700.

VCE Students Receive Prestigious Premier’s Award Catholic College Sale‟s Senior Campus Head, Mr Steve Centra was thrilled when he was contacted by the Victorian Premier‟s Department to advise that two Catholic College Sale students were to receive a prestigious VCE Premiers Award. Isabel Lothian, who is currently studying Year 12 and past student Siobhan Duivenvorden who completed her VCE in 2010, were both honored at the 2011 Premier‟s Award ceremony which not only acknowledges the outstanding results of individuals but also pays tribute to principals, teachers and parents who play an invaluable role in supporting and encouraging students during their VCE studies. Isabel received an award for studies in Sport & Recreation while Siobhan received her award for studies in Visual Communications & Design. Premier Mr Ted Baillieu presented certificates at the Melbourne Convention Centre to the State‟s top achievers. “VCE is one of life‟s challenges and these students have tackled it with great dedication and skill.” said Mr Baillieu

Catholic College Sale was the only school in Gippsland with multiple students receiving an award. It is a credit to both of these students who have shown great commitment to their studies. We wish them both every success in their future endeavours.

Canteen News Thank you to the volunteers who advised us that they are no longer available to volunteer in the canteen. We still have a few vacancies at the St Pat's Canteen, in particular Friday‟s, so if you are able to perhaps fill in for one of the days on the roster marked as ”VOLUNTEER NEEDED” we would be grateful. Please contact us on 51439733 if you can help out on any of these days. If you are unable for one reason or another to attend on your rostered day please try to organise a swap with another volunteer or failing this contact us as soon as possible so we can try to make alternate arrangements.

Catholic College Sale PO Box 594 Sale, VIC. 3853 Tel 03 5143 9700

We ask that if you send noodles with your child for their lunch that they are labeled with both name and year level, the seasoning placed in and given to the Canteen at recess (at either campus) with a secure lid so that they can be prepared and the student can collect them at lunch time. If your student wishes to buy them at the canteen they are asked to do so through the lunch bag system as they need to be prepared in advance to allow a cooling down period. When the current stock of noodles has been depleted the noodles we will be replacing them with a brand that has a more secured lid and an insulated wrap.

contactus@ccsale.catholic.edu.au

PLEASE NOTE: We do not heat food such as pies, sausage rolls, toasted sandwiches etc brought in from home. In the near future the canteens will be having "Special Menu" days which will be posted in the daily memos. Thank you again for all your support. Without our wonderful volunteer‟s we would be unable to operate such a successful canteen. June, Angie and Julie
