Who Qualifies?

Families qualify for the Alternative Payment Program based on two criteria “eligibility” and “need”.

“Eligibilit y”

To be “ eligible”, a family’s income must meet eligibility requirements set by the State Department of Social Services, Child Care and Development Division.

“Need”

A family “needs” childcare based on one of the following: parents are employed, in school, or participating in a training program, parents are incapacitated or are unable to adequately care for their child(ren), children with special needs (medical, psychological, or if the child(ren) needs care as protection from abuse or neglect.

CalWORKs Families (current and former recipients)

Childcare is a critical part of your success as a former or current recipient of CalWORKs (or AFDC) benefits. For former or current CalWORKs recipients, Supportive Services, Inc. can provide funding if you meet eligibility requirements.

How May I See if I Qualif y?

Currently there are more families in need of assistance than there is funding to help. A waiting list of eligible families is kept to fill funding slots as they become available. To be placed on the waiting list, you may contact (559) 230 -2030 or visit our website at ssifresno.org.

News You Can Use

Read Across America

Launched in 1998 by the National Education Association (NEA) and guided by a committee of educators, NEA’s Read Across America is the nation’s largest celebration of reading. This year-round program focuses on motivating children and teens to read through events, partnerships, and reading resources that are about everyone, for everyone.

The titles and resources featured by NEA’s Read Across America include books that students can see themselves reflected in, as well as books that allow readers to see a world or a character that might be different than them.

Readers who feel included, recognized, and a part of the world are engaged readers. Share the recommended titles—and many others—with your kids to celebrate Read Across America in March and throughout the year.

Read Across America offers limitless opportunities for involvement in children’s reading throughout the year. The year-round program can fit reading fun into your calendar daily, weekly, or monthly and includes big celebrations of reading on March 2nd and throughout National Reading Month in March. Use the book and activity suggestions to bring Read Across America to your community. Contact your local school, education association, library, or bookstore about planning or participating in an event.

An Update on your Family’s Health and Welfare

National Poison Prevention Week

Every third week in March is National Poison Prevention Week. Established in 1961 by Congress, National Poison Prevention Week was originated to raise awareness of poison prevention and safety.

In 2022, U.S. Poison Centers responded to 2,427,974 total cases, on average receiving a new case every 15 seconds. Some of the leading exposure substance categories included analgesics, household cleaning substances, antidepressants, cosmetics, personal care products, and antihistamines.

Unfortunately, 3,809 poison-related deaths were reported in 2021. This number serves as an important reminder that while

poison exposures and accidents do occur, they can also be prevented with education and awareness.

In 2024, National Poison Prevention Week will take place March 17th–23rd and the theme is, “When the unexpected happens, Poison Help is here for you 24/7.” Whether you have general questions or an emergency, Poison Help is available 24/7/365 at no cost to you.

Poison Help is available at 1-800-222-1222 for questions regarding medications, cleaning products, insect bites, food poisoning, and more. Keep their number handy in case of an emergency!

When Your Baby Doesn't Want to Eat Food

Is your baby refusing food? If you’ve only recently switched from purees to finger foods, your new eater may be unsure how to selffeed or hesitant to try the new non-purees in front of them. Or perhaps your baby has been a great eater since you started feeding solids a few months ago, but suddenly is refusing to eat. What’s up? And what can you do about it? Here are some tips.

Offer more food variety and help build a tolerance for textures. What’s on your baby’s menu? The same ten foods that you’ve been serving since starting solids? Your little one may be bored with the selection—and if you’ve been feeding mostly purees, with the consistency. It’s time to shake things up by widening your baby’s food repertoire. Resist the urge to feed only “baby food” and offer as much variety as possible!

If you’ve been feeding mostly purees, your baby may find the texture of finger foods unfamiliar and have difficulty processing the sensory input from them. Offer new foods again and again, even if your baby seems to balk at their textures the first few times they encounter them. Research shows it can take ten or more tries before a baby accepts a new food.

Let your baby self-feed. Let your baby get their hands on finger foods—literally. Self-feeding is critical for so many reasons, not least because the more your baby is able to self-feed, the less likely they are to resist eating. If you’re still spoon-feeding your baby at this age, you’re not only preventing them from learning an important skill, but also preventing them from having autonomy at the table—something very important for healthy eating habits going forward.

Try a new location. Perhaps your baby gagged at the last meal and didn’t enjoy that sensation, or maybe the high chair straps pinched and now they balk as soon as you make a beeline for the seat. A baby who is unhappy in the high chair may be unwilling to eat. If you suspect a negative association with the high chair, take a break from it. Try holding your baby on your lap for the meal instead or lay out a picnic directly on the splat mat. These short-term tactics can help break the cycle of resistance, because it brings the act of eating to a new environment. Once your baby is more readily accepting food again, you should return to high chair eating—it’s the safest place for your baby to eat.

Camp Ready Am I Ready to Send My Child to Overnight Camp?

s the van pulled away, I wanted nothing more than to change my mind. I wanted to pull my kids back to me, bring them home, and keep them with me forever. Instead, I stood there watching them go, watching until the van was out of sight, watching just a few minutes longer as my eyes filled with the tears I had been holding back all morning. I didn’t want them to go as much as I wanted them to go.

Knowing when kids are ready for overnight camp feels concrete, even if there is a bit of a learning curve in the process.

Do they want to go?

Are they excited?

Are they comfortable sleeping away from home?

Have you set up things to make them more comfortable?

Quality

Knowing when we as parents are ready for our kids to go to overnight camp is rarely even talked about.

While we can do all the research, find the perfect camp, and understand the amazing opportunities overnight camp gives our kids, there are things to consider before watching that van drive away.

1. How do I feel about it?

Excited? Nervous? Ready? No matter how you feel, you will probably never be ready. That’s the reality of parenting kids as they grow up. There will always be a pull from somewhere deep inside of you that wants to hold on. Even when you know you need to let go. It isn’t easy for anyone, but recognizing it helps.

2. Do I feel safe?

The safety of your kids is always one of your top priorities. Sending them to overnight camp, for one night, one week, or a whole summer, is a big decision. Take time to learn about the camp. Find out about the people working with the kids. Questions about requirements for lifeguards and background checks are completely appropriate and reputable camps will not be offended by any of these. Understanding the camp, how it works, and the people responsible during that time will help you decide how comfortable you are entrusting them with your child.

3. Am I excited about the opportunities they will have?

If you are going to balance the struggle of letting them go, it is key to know why you are sending them in the first place. Will they be able to have tons of outdoor time to play? Will your science lover get to do experiments every day? Will your artist have a full week of creating? Knowing the benefits of the camp and how it will help your child grow, develop friendships, learn, and foster independence, will help when you are missing them.

4. What is the emergency plan?

Part of protecting our kids means being aware of dangers. The idea of not being there if something goes wrong can be hard and can even hold parents back from sending kids to camp. From an injury to simple homesickness, think about how you would handle a situation if it arises. Understanding the camp protocols, as well as how you would be available and get to your child, is a helpful way to feel ready.

5. How will I know what’s happening?

Camps are full of ways to connect. While most don’t allow phone communication, many have fun ways to stay connected. Camps today have opportunities to send emails, text, or even see daily pictures of your child at camp. Know the ways you can stay aware of your child’s experience. It will help you feel connected each day.

If you are uncertain about these things, take some time to think about them. Explore different camp options like how far it is from your home and how many days they will go. If you are struggling, start closer to home or with a shorter time frame. If you are feeling more confident, explore longer options or out-of-town possibilities. Sending kids with a sibling or friend is a great way to have some peace of mind, and talking to families that have sent their kids to the camp you are considering will help you find out more than what is available on the website. See what makes you feel more comfortable, and go from there.

While it is important to decide if your child is ready to go to camp, it is equally important to make sure you are comfortable sending them. Taking time to think about these questions will help you decide if you are ready to send your child to overnight camp.

Make mealtimes more positive. Are you wiping your baby’s chin between each bite? Shaking your head every time they drop a piece of food on the floor? Preventing your baby from spreading yogurt all over the tray and squishing fruit between their fingers? Forcing bites of food even when they show signs of not wanting to eat? It’s time to let meals get messy, remove all pressure to eat, and stop bringing emotion to the meal. The best thing you can do at the table is feign indifference. Show no emotion whether they eat or not so they're able to listen to their own appetite cues instead of feeling pressured to eat or compelled to fight you every step of the way. Make feeding times positive, connected, and responsive so your baby replaces any negative associations with positive ones.

Make sure your baby is coming to the table hungry. A baby whose tummy is filled with formula or breast milk won’t be hungry enough for a meal. Make sure you aren’t serving liquid meals too close to table meals. Schedule milk feeds at least an hour before serving solids so your baby has built up an appetite by mealtime.

Feed foods that fight constipation or address teething discomfort. Teething, illness, and constipation can all put a dent in your baby’s appetite. After all, the last thing a teething or sick baby wants to do is work hard at chewing new foods. If your baby is constipated, you can help fight it by serving the right kinds of foods—beans, lentils, chickpeas, berries, kiwi, chia, flax, whole grains, oatmeal, avocado, and ripe fruit. Food refusal due to illness or teething is developmentally normal and nothing to worry about. This too shall pass.

Eat alongside your baby to model healthy eating habits. Babies are born mimics, and most prefer to eat with company. When eating together, offer your baby food from your plate, or even eat food from their plate. Letting your baby feed you may entice them to take a bite themselves. Most importantly, remind yourself that the majority of your baby’s nutrients in the first year come from breast milk or formula and that eating solid food at this age, while important, is more for gaining important eating skills than actual nutrients. That means you don’t have to stress about how much your baby is eating. Instead, focus on how your child is eating (self-feeding, learning to manipulate food in their mouth, chewing larger pieces) and on giving them lots of opportunity to learn.

How Much Food Should Your Baby Be Eating?

Your baby should be eating as much solid food as they are interested in. Unlike for adults, there is no exact recommended portion size or amount of food per day for babies to eat. You’ll see suggested ranges of a few tablespoons per food group, and that’s a fine estimate, but it’s not an absolute. In other words, don’t worry about amounts. That may sound crazy, but because there’s such a wide range of appetites among babies, it’s hard to determine the “right” portion size. What’s more, different babies have different activity levels and metabolisms, making it difficult to standardize guidelines. Finally, your baby’s intake will vary from time to time— growth spurts may increase their nutritional needs, while teething or illness might decrease their appetite. Instead of focusing on how much your baby is eating at each meal, place your energy into the variety of foods they are consuming over the course of the week. And watch for cues instead of the tablespoons—babies are very capable of listening to their appetites, self-regulating, and letting you know when they’re hungry or full. If your little one is gaining weight steadily, learning new skills, and happy, alert, and playful during the day, you’ll know they're getting enough to eat, no measuring needed.
