Your Go-To Destination for Passover

Passover is the ultimate Jewish story—a tale of freedom, hope, and food—which makes it the perfect holiday to share with the entire family. From the experiential delight of the seders to the eight days of exciting matzo baking projects, Passover is time for gathering, reflecting, telling stories, and working towards a world with freedom for all.

Planning to cover all that with kids may feel lofty–especially if you’re a little hazy on the details yourself. PJ Library, a globally beloved free Jewish book program, has you covered as your go-to destination for making Passover special.

Visit PJ Library’s Passover Hub at pjlibrary.org/passover to find everything you need to plan your festive Passover meal (seder), set your table, and answer your kids’ curious questions (and encourage them to ask some of their own). There, you’ll find their free downloadable Passover Guide, a familyoriented primer that lays out how to prepare for the seders and the foods you need for your table, as well as offering up meaningful activities to make the most out of all eight days.

The Passover Hub features downloadable activities to keep little ones entertained during the seder, book lists, a step-by-step video playlist to help kids learn (or brush up on) their Four Questions, and recipes. After all, what would a Jewish holiday be without food? Find fun and easy recipes like Charoset Breakfast Balls, Chicken Skewers with Avocado Dip, or Cholent.

PJ Library inspires joyful Jewish experiences by sending free storybooks and activities to families with children ages 0–12 and offering ways to connect with community. The program was founded in 2005 by the Harold Grinspoon Foundation (HGF) and, with the support of generous donors and partners, now distributes books in seven languages to more than 650,000 children in over 40 countries every month. The PJ Library family experience is built around the monthly storybooks and also includes family-focused holiday guides and other free gifts. Anyone who visits PJ Library’s website can hear original storytelling podcasts and explore a vast collection of Jewish parenting resources. The program welcomes families across the diversity of Jewish life. Visit pjlibrary.org and learn more or sign up for monthly children’s books.

An Update on your Family’s Health and Welfare

Longer Paternity Leave Linked to Longer Infant Breastfeeding

Fathers who take at least two weeks of leave after their child’s birth are significantly more likely to report longer breastfeeding duration, according to a recent survey led by scientists at Northwestern University and Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago.

“Our study shows fathers play a key role in breastfeeding success—and time off lets them provide crucial support when it matters most,” said lead study author Dr. John James Parker, an assistant professor of pediatrics and medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, pediatrician at Lurie Children’s, and internist at Northwestern Medicine.

The findings, published in BMC Public Health, provide the first U.S. analysis using father-reported data on paternity leave and breastfeeding.

Researchers analyzed data from the PRAMS for Dads survey, reviewing responses from 240 employed fathers in Georgia. They found that fathers who took two or more weeks of leave were 31% more likely to report their infant being breastfed at eight weeks compared to those who took less time.

Among families who initiated breastfeeding, those where dads took at least two weeks off had a 25% higher rate of continued breastfeeding at eight weeks than those where dads had shorter leave. These findings held even after adjusting for factors like parental education, maternal employment, and infant characteristics.

“Fathers can support breastfeeding by handling baby care— changing diapers, burping, rocking, and feeding expressed milk— while also ensuring mothers get the rest and nutrition they need,” Parker said. “These tasks are much easier when fathers have adequate leave.”

The study also found disparities in paid leave access. White fathers were more likely to receive paid leave than fathers from other racial and ethnic groups. Overall, 73% of employed fathers in the sample took leave, with slightly over 50% receiving paid leave. Fathers with paid leave were more likely to take at least two weeks.

Parker, a father of three, said his own experience influenced his research. “When I became a father, I realized how absent dads were from the conversation,” he said. A turning point came when his pediatrician offered guidance on supporting his wife with breastfeeding. “It made me feel part of the team,” he said. “Now, I do the same for the dads I work with.”

4 Ways to Grab Some Self-Care When it Seems Impossible

When you are in the thick of early parenting—and especially if you have a little one who just doesn’t sleep—getting even basic needs met can be a challenge. The term “self-care” has gotten a little misconstrued as “pampering” or “treating yourself.” When you barely have time to shove a snack in your mouth, there’s no “pampering” happening. It’s impossible to think about self-care when there’s so much nonstop other-care that needs doing.

There are also parents who are truly in a hole of exhaustion. For them, “self-care” can sound like a band-aid for a head wound— and they’re right. A “bubble bath” will not fix a backlog of sleep deprivation. However, not taking the bath won’t move the needle at all. “Self-care” can be small actions that put tiny amounts of energy back into your tank.

So, how can you wedge little bits of caring for yourself in between all of the caring for others you have to do in a day?

1. Commit to teeny daily breaks. Mini-breaks are better than no breaks. Can you carve out 45 minutes where you leave the house or have someone take the kids and you leave the house? Everyone will survive for 45 minutes.

2. Lower the bar. What standards can be let go of temporarily? Clean kitchen? No screens? Perfectionism? The pressure we put on ourselves takes a tremendous toll. As the amazing and hilarious author Jen Sincero so rightly says, “Loosen your bone, Wilma.”

3. Slow your scroll. Comparison on social media is a big contributor to both anxiety and depression and destroys selfesteem. Everyone else on social media looks like they “get it,” like their parenting is easier, like they have all the answers. Taking a break from scrolling can free up mental energy, help us get to bed a little earlier, or maybe inspire us to do something that feeds our energy, rather than drain it.

4. Practice self-compassion. This sounds too simple to work, but research has shown it is a powerful and effective tool. Put your hands on your chest and say something nice to yourself the way you would talk to a friend in need, “You really love your kids.” “You are working so hard.” Or just, “There, there.” Sounds too simple, but it works.

Start small. When all you can manage is a ten minute walk outside by yourself and a short self-compassion exercise, that will help. It demonstrates that you matter—and you do. Those flight attendants are totally right—you do have to put on your oxygen mask first.

Navigating Changes as a Family

Every family experiences changes. Some are planned, others are unexpected. Some are joyful, others are marked by pain or uncertainty.

Whether it’s divorce, the death of a loved one, welcoming a new sibling, or moving to a new home, these events impact every member of the family. For young children, even small changes can feel monumental, and how adults talk with them affects how they respond and cope.

Why Transitions Matter

To understand why transitions affect children so deeply, it’s important to remember children see the world differently than adults. Their routines, relationships and surroundings establish a sense of security and safety. Their families and role within them form their initial identities. Any disruption, big or small, can shake their foundation.

Children are naturally perceptive. When something changes, they notice. When they lack the language or understanding to ask questions, they express their feelings through behavior.

When children become clingier after a new sibling is born or struggle with meltdowns in a new classroom, they’re trying to process the changes in their lives. These behaviors signal, “I’m not sure what to do with all these feelings.”

View Changes Through Children’s Eyes

Everyone experiences changes differently. Even within the same family, adults and children may perceive and respond to the same event in unique ways. An adult may see moving to a new home as an exciting fresh start, while children may see it as leaving behind the only bedroom they’ve ever known.

Approaching changes through a child’s lens helps reframe what’s happening. Instead of minimizing feelings, adults can acknowledge the shift children are experiencing and guide them with care.

Proactively Communicate

When families face big changes, one of the most common questions is, “What do we tell the kids?” There’s often a struggle between wanting to protect children from

overwhelming emotions and offering them enough information to make sense of what’s going on. Rather than avoiding the conversation, discuss what’s happening using this framework:

1. Acknowledge what’s happening. Use clear, simple language, such as, “Daddy is moving to a different house and you’ll have two homes now.”

2. Focus on the present or immediate future. Young children often don’t have a solid grasp of time. While they can understand routines and orders of events, it takes well into elementary school for them to conceptualize time.

3. Name the feelings. Give children words for what they might be feeling. “It’s okay to feel sad or confused right now. Sometimes changes feel hard.”

4. Provide reassurance. Let them know that even though things are changing, they’re still safe and loved.

5. Encourage questions. If you don’t have an answer, it’s okay to say, “I’m not sure, but I’ll find out,” or “We’re figuring this out together.”

Avoidance is a natural instinct, but silence leaves children to fill in the gaps with their imaginations—which can be scarier than reality. Moreover, when they sense something is different, but no one is talking about it, children might feel alone in their confusion. Be proactively and communicate with them.

Embrace Feelings

Transitions can be emotional and children need space to express their feelings without judgment. When a child cries or lashes out, instead of responding with, “Don’t be sad,” validate the experience by saying, “I see you have big feelings right now. I’m here with you.” Help your child manage these feelings by encouraging active expressions, such as drawing, writing, or moving to music.

Transitions can be challenging, but they’re also opportunities to build resilience and deeper connections. Approaching big changes with empathy, proactive communication, and an open heart helps children feel more secure and confident to move forward.

Who Qualifies?

Families qualify for the Alternative Payment Program based on two criteria “eligibility” and “need”.

“Eligibilit y”

To be “ eligible”, a family’s income must meet eligibility requirements set by the State Department of Social Services, Child Care and Development Division.

“Need”

A family “needs” childcare based on one of the following: parents are employed, in school, or participating in a training program, parents are incapacitated or are unable to adequately care for their child(ren), children with special needs (medical, psychological, or if the child(ren) needs care as protection from abuse or neglect.

CalWORKs Families (current and former recipients)

Childcare is a critical part of your success as a former or current recipient of CalWORKs (or AFDC) benefits. For former or current CalWORKs recipients, Supportive Services, Inc. can provide funding if you meet eligibility requirements.

How May I See if I Qualif y?

Currently there are more families in need of assistance than there is funding to help. A waiting list of eligible families is kept to fill funding slots as they become available. To be placed on the waiting list, you may contact (559) 230 -2030 or visit our website at ssifresno.org.
