News You Can Use

Summer At Your Library

Summer is a time when children get a break from the rigorous studying and learning they do from late August to early June. Sadly, summer break also means that many children fall victim to the dreaded “summer slide.” Summer slide, or summer learning loss, occurs during these summer months when children simply stop learning. During the summer months, summer slide can cause a child to lose as much as 2/3 of what they have learned during the previous school year. This simply means that they return to school not as on grade level as their peers who are engaged in some kind of activities which stimulate the mind to continuously learn during the summer months.

Libraries across the country have been fighting summer slide for over a hundred years now. This year the fight continues on with Summer at Your Library. What started out as a reading program at the library during the summer months has evolved into a summer full of fun, educational, and free programs for the entire family. Reading is still a very big component of the program, but there are also many performers providing entertainment to kids. Learn more about programs near you below!

Whether your kids enjoy reptiles, reading, crafts, magic, or music— there’s something for everyone!

Head to ccparent. com/summerreading to find free and fun programs near you!

Great American Campout

Connect with nature and help wildlife stay wild during the Great American Campout, kicking off in June. The National Wildlife Federation encourages people to pledge to camp at least once this summer—anywhere from a forest to their own backyard. The Great American Campout is an easy way to get outdoors and enjoy the benefits of nature and wildlife, whether you are a seasoned pro or a first-time camper. Once you are ready to pitch your tent, pack up your RV, or venture into your backyard, take a look at the NWF resources to turn your Campout into an annual event! Download fun camping-themed activities from Ranger Rick to try both during the day and after the sun goes down, and browse through additional outdoor activities. Register at nwf.org/campout for tips, recipes, and so much more!

Get Active and Save Lives!

UNICEF Kid Power is a free, digital platform designed to empower your child. Kids complete short, interactive videos where they dance, move, play games, and learn. By getting active, your child unlocks lifesaving therapeutic food that UNICEF delivers to severely malnourished children around the globe. They also earn and give digital currency to make a positive impact in their own communities. The more kids move, the more lives they save. They’re empowered as their actions make a real-world difference.

Half of surveyed American kids don’t feel empowered to make a difference in their community or the world. One in every four children under five are malnourished. With UNICEF Kid Power, your child can join a community of kids making real-world impact everyday. Additionally, the videos are a great way to get your kids active!

Some Shorter Stuff

Meet our Cover Kids, Brixton, Bryant, and Bradley! Brixton is 7 and he is very kind and thoughtful; he is always thinking of others and hates to see anyone sad. He currently participates in lots of activities, but seems to enjoy swim and all things LEGO the most. He is an excellent builder and can take almost anything and transform it! Bryant is baby “A” and is bursting with life. She is 3 and loves nature, animals, and just being outside. She is the most adventurous of the family; she loves to go fast and climb. Bradley is baby “B” and is a girlie girl. She loves to cuddle, she enjoys purses, bows, and dressing up. She is advanced academically and speaks very clearly for her age. She can be shy at times, but loves to take care of others and is very confident in herself. Brixton, Bryant, and Bradley travel quite a bit with their family. They are well-versed in waiting in lines, packing, planes, and figuring out how to entertain themselves. They enjoy spending time in Laguna, visiting the family cabin near Oakhurst, seeing Grandma and Grandpa, and enjoying all the wonderful activities around the Valley!

Don’t Overlook the Critical Link Between Vision and Learning. Before deciding if a child’s learning problem is ADD, dyslexia, or even laziness, make sure to have their eyesight tested. Experts say sixty percent of children with learning disabilities have undiagnosed vision problems.

An Update on your Family’s Health and Welfare

5 Yoga Poses to Do With Baby

Having a baby comes with lots of new challenges. From diaper changes to late night feedings, it's often difficult to find time for exercise. Try the following poses with your baby to help strengthen, lengthen, and squeeze in extra snuggles and smiles along the way!

How-to: Start standing with feet hipdistance apart and hold baby across the belly and underneath the legs so baby is fully supported. Pull your belly button in to stay supported through your core. Bend your knees and lower down into a squat position. Keep holding baby close and use your back muscles to stay lifted tall through your spine.

Benefits: This pose is an excellent way to open and stretch the hips which can get tight from time spent sitting while feeding the baby throughout the day. Plus, the use of the core to keep the spine straight while holding onto baby is a great way to strengthen the abdominal and back muscles.

2. Navasana - Boat Pose

How-to: Start sitting with both feet out in front of you and your knees bent. Sit baby in your lap with baby’s back to your belly. Lean back onto your sitting bones and lift your feet so your shins come parallel to the floor. Pull your belly button in to engage your core, wrap your ribs in towards center

to stay knitted through your transverse abdominal muscles, and keep your spine long and chest lifted.

Benefits: This pose is a great way to slowly reintroduce core work after having a baby because in order to stay balanced, you must focus on hugging everything in towards center. You can modify as needed by bringing less of a parallel to the shins. This is also a great pose to tickle your baby’s toes or play with their feet—which is a welcome distraction from the core work that’s happening!

3. Supta Navasana - Reclined Boat Pose

How-to: Lay on your back with your knees bent and hip-distance apart. Lay baby’s belly on your shins with their head above your knees. Lift your shins parallel to the floor while holding baby’s hands. Focus on keep your low back against your mat and your ribs hugging in towards your center. You can stay here, or if you’re looking for a bit of extra work in the low belly, breathe in and bend your knees towards your chest. On your exhale, bring them back out to parallel and repeat 7–10 times.

Benefits: This position is a great way to focus on using your breath to engage through the transverse abdominal muscles, which can be weakened after having a baby because of all the belly expansion that happens during pregnancy. Plus, being able to “fly” usually leads to a very happy and smiley baby.

4. Setu Bandha SarvangasanaBridge Pose

How-to: Lay on your back with your knees bent and hip-distance apart. Sit baby across your hips holding tight to keep them stable. Breathe in to expand your ribs from side to side and on your exhale, wrap them in towards the center. Then, press into your feet and lift your hips upwards. Benefits: This pose is a great way to strengthen your glutes and hamstrings while also opening up the hips, quadriceps, and chest. It also leaves lots of room for practicing eye contact and silly faces.

5. Upavistha KonasanaWide Angled Forward Fold

How-to: Start seated with your knees bent, feet on the floor, and baby seated on the floor in front of you with their back to your belly. Open your legs wide and straighten them. Focus on pressing your heels into the floor and flex your feet towards the ceiling. Help baby to sit up tall and if baby is steady, reach your fingertips for your toes. Benefits: This pose stretches your hamstrings and inner thighs and strengthens the back muscles as you focus on keeping your spine long. It’s also a great position to take to help baby learn to sit in a safe and supported way.

How to Share the News of Cancer with your Children

Kate Middleton announced that she was diagnosed with cancer and that it was a complete shock. During her statement she emphasized that she has previously stayed silent to give her family the time to privately explain her diagnosis to her young, three children. She continues that she wanted to share the news in a way that was appropriate for them and to reassure them that she was going to be okay.

One of the hardest parts of parenting is sharing information with your child that you don't always have all the knowledge on or sharing news that is shocking or sad. When you are not a pro in a topic your child is asking about or experiencing, it can make it difficult to speak and act authoritatively on the situation. Especially when the topic may be new, scary, and bring on some big feelings.

Talking to kids about cancer can be one of those difficult situations because you may not have all the answers and are oftentimes processing the information as well. At the end of the day, just like parenting, we do the best we can and we take on hard times and hard conversations as a family. Following are tips to help you start the conversation.

Use Age-Appropriate Language

Tailor your explanation to the child's age and level of understanding. Keep it simple and avoid using medical jargon. Sit down with your child and give them your full attention. Being too casual or too distracted can cause confusion.

Be Mindful of Your Setting and Plan the Conversation

Make sure the timing is right and you are in a safe place, such as your home, and with just your immediate family. Being out in public is not ideal as they might want to show big emotions. If they are around others, such as extended family, friends, or strangers, they may feel disconnected and taken off guard. Make sure everyone is calm before sharing the news and you have no plans to be anywhere soon so everyone has the time they need to talk and process together.

Be Honest

Explain that cancer is a disease that happens when cells in the body start to grow out of control. You can compare it to weeds in a garden that grow too fast and can cause problems. You want to

be honest with them so they trust you and know you are not lying to them which will heighten their fears. If they feel like they are not receiving the full picture, it may cause them to worry more, look into it on their own (which could lead to them discovering a range of information), or shut down because they are scared of the unknown.

Emphasize that Cancer is Not Contagious

Assure your child that cancer is not something they can catch from someone else like a cold or the flu. Once receiving the news, an initial reaction could be that they feel scared. Taking some concerns off their mental load allows them to focus on one thing, which is a good place to start.

Reassure Them and Show Your Own Emotions

Let them know that doctors and scientists are working hard to treat cancer and help people get better. Validate their feelings that it's okay to feel scared, sad, or confused. Share with them how you feel about it. Encourage emotion and that it's okay to have big feelings about the news and that you are there for them. This is a great teaching moment to model that emotions are okay and show them how you are dealing with big emotions too.

Encourage Questions and Ask Them What They Know

Be open to answering any questions they may have, and keep the conversation going using developmentally-appropriate language. Understanding their knowledge of cancer will also help you see where they are at and what additional information they need.  Set expectations about what is going to happen so they know what to expect. This can be topics like losing hair, spending more time at the doctor, or being a little more tired. Make sure to explain what those things mean to them and their current routines.

It is essential to approach these discussions with honesty, empathy, and a willingness to learn together. It's okay to not have all the answers. Being there for your child emotionally is just as important as providing information. By following these tips, you can create a supportive environment, helping your family navigate through tough times as a united front.

7 Dinner Planning Hacks for Busy Parents and Hungry Kids

If your family is like mine, they like eating dinner. And if you’re like me, though you enjoy cooking dinner, you secretly wish your family didn’t expect to eat a meal every single night. Dinner is not a passing trend—it is here to stay, which means we need to figure out some ways to deal with it. Here are some of my favorites.

1. Have a plan

“A failure to plan is a plan to fail.” When Benjamin Franklin said this, he probably wasn’t talking about dinner, but it is applicable, nonetheless. Waiting until the last minute to figure out what’s for dinner inevitably means, at best, stress, last-minute scrambling, and at worst, an expensive and unhealthy stop at the drivethru window.

Before I shop for the week, I pull up my husband’s and my shared Google calendar to see what our week looks like, including nights I know one or both of us won’t be

home for dinner, and nights when I will be pressed for time. I jot that info down.

Next, I write down what we will have each night, whether it’s a “real” meal, leftovers, or something I’ve already made and plan to defrost. Finally, I add any ingredients I need to buy to my shopping list, organizing them in columns, according to where they are locating in the grocery store.

On a typical week, I schedule three home-cooked meals, two nights of leftovers, one night for the kids to eat kid food with a sitter when my husband and I go out, and one night with a question mark, so I have the flexibility to move things around if needed. Somehow, this system always works out. Meanwhile, I have friends who swear by using a consistent 14meal rotation every two weeks, to avoid the headache of selecting meals and creating a new shopping list every week.

It doesn’t matter what system you use, only that you find a system that works for you.

2. Don’t have a plan

Some weeks, I don’t have the energy to create a detailed plan. One way to avoid meal planning, but still get something healthy on the table with minimal stress, is to shop with an awareness of roughly how much of each kind of food you need.

For example, on a “plan not to plan week,” when shopping for my family, I fill my cart with about two-fifths fruits and vegetables, one-fifth meat and fish, onefifth starches like rice, quinoa, bread, pasta, and sweet potatoes, and one-fifth items from the middle aisles, including oats, crackers, dried fruit, and snack foods. For dinners, you can mix and match whatever you have. Simple meals I might create with this method include:

• Baked salmon, rice, and steamed broccoli

• Roasted chicken, baked sweet potato, and roasted cauliflower

• Stir fry with beef, onions, bell peppers, miscellaneous vegetables, and rice

3. Make a large batch of something for the week

There’s no need to reinvent the wheel every night. Of course, you can simply reheat leftovers if you have enough for another meal.

If you don’t have enough leftover food for an entire meal, or you’re adverse to eating leftovers (apparently such people exist—I am not among them), here are examples of ways to incorporate leftovers into another meal:

• Serve a vegetarian soup. The following night, add rice and pre-cooked chicken sausage when you re-heat it to add volume and variety.

• If you roast a whole chicken one night, dice up the leftovers to add to a salad or pasta with sautéed spinach or broccoli the following night.

• Roast a large amount of root vegetables as a side dish. The following night, use the leftover veggies in a frittata, or toss them into a bowl of quinoa along with some toasted nuts and goat cheese or Parmesan cheese.

If you like the idea of a big salad that will keep for several days, here are a few tips to

10 • Central California Parent • June 2024

limit moisture and optimize freshness:

• Avoid “mushy” ingredients like cucumber, tomato, and mushroom.

• Instead, choose crunchier veggies, like carrots, cabbage, radish, Brussels sprouts.

• Run your greens thought a salad spinner after washing.

4. Take advantage of your freezer

If there is dish your family loves, double the recipe and freeze half for a night when you’re too crazed to cook. Better, yet, triple it, or even quadruple it. I can count the number of cookbooks I own on one hand, and one of them is Don’t Panic, Dinner’s in the Freezer. In addition to offering recipes that are perfect for freezing, it also explains exactly how to freeze food to save space and to prevent freezer burn. The book also makes it easy to double, triple, or even quadruple the recipe without a calculator, offering four versions of each recipe, depending on how much you plan to make.

5. Plan an easy night once a week

Dinner doesn’t have to be picture-worthy every single night. Ideas for easy dinners that require minimal prep and limited clean-up include:

• Grilled cheese and tomato soup (My friend makes this meal religiously once a week!)

• Leftovers

• Breakfast for dinner

• Sandwiches and carrot sticks

• Rotisserie chicken and a green salad

• Frozen pizza and steamed broccoli

• Macaroni and cheese from a box with meatballs or sliced sausages

• Pizza bagels

6. Keep staples on hand

Sometimes the day, or even the week, doesn’t unfold the way you anticipated. Your kid is sick, your car is in the shop, work is crazy, or your partner is traveling. When life interferes with your plans, you can avoid stressing about dinner if you have a few staples available. Items to keep in your pantry, freezer, or fridge include:

• Canned tuna fish

• Rice (including minute rice!)

• Canned beans

• Frozen veggies

• Eggs

• Quinoa

• Pasta

• Frozen veggie, salmon, turkey, or beef burgers

• Frozen pizza

• Canned chicken soup

7. Batch process

If you’re using one ingredient for multiple meals in a week, chop and store it all at once. This saves you washing your knife, cutting board, and work surface multiple times. Plus, it allows you a big sigh of relief, knowing you’ve got a head start on more than one dinner. Take it a step further and prep everything you can at once, for the entire week. You can make it fun by turning on music, sipping a glass of wine, and sharing the work with your partner. If your kids are old enough, get them to help. Young kids can pull a chair or a step stool up to the sink and rinse veggies. Older kids can use a paring knife or a peeler on vegetables or potatoes.

Use freezer bags to store your prepped ingredients and label them with a Sharpie to make sure the ingredients go into the correct meal. If you prefer to use Tupperware containers, label them with a post-it note.

Serving a nutritious meal before your family is too cranky and tired to enjoy it can be stressful—but it doesn’t have to be. Trust me, I’ve tried all of the strategies listed above. A little creativity and planning go a long way in lightening the daily burden commonly known as dinner.

From Monkey Bars to Lifelong Bonds: Teaching Kids the Art of Friendship

Whether it’s at home, school, or at the park, friendships during our youth are probably one of the most basic concepts we learn as children.

I have vivid memories of a special friend I met on the monkey bars as a child. Her name was Michelle, and every day we would meet at that playground, creating wild adventures using our imagination, traipsing from the slide to the swings, laughing and playing for hours. It’s pure, honest, and often comforting; knowing that someone likes you and likes the same things you do.

Surveys show that friendships play a crucial role in the development and wellbeing of children in several ways:

Social Development: Friendships help children learn important social skills, such as cooperation, communication, negotiation, and conflict resolution.

Emotional Support: Friends provide emotional support and companionship, which is vital for children’s emotional wellbeing.

Self-Esteem: Positive friendships contribute to children’s self-esteem and

self-confidence. Being accepted and valued by peers boosts children’s sense of selfworth and helps them develop a positive self-image.

Cognitive Development: Friendships offer opportunities for cognitive development as children engage in collaborative play, problem-solving activities, and discussions with their peers. However, friendships are bound to have conflicts, and that’s where teachers and parents can help children by implementing a preventative plan for guiding children on how to be a good friend. It all starts with the gradual introduction of basic communication concepts that often elicits emotions. The key is to help children identify those emotions and provide examples of positive ways to deal with them.

Here are seven tips for teaching kids how to be a good friend:

1

Explain the concept of ‘communication’ and how one person listens or ‘hears’ what the other person is saying’ as the other person speaks. Demonstrate in a role play where the child talks and then you talk

over them. Ask them how that made them feel and if they thought you actually heard what they said.

2

Ask the child to define a ‘friend’ and what it means to them to have a friend. Have them name a friend and why they enjoy having them as a friend or what makes them special.

3

Explain the concept of sharing physical objects, such as toys or food, and provide an example. For example: a friend comes over for a playdate and you have a toy your friend wants to play with. However, it’s your toy, and you wanted to play with it. Your friend is only there for an hour, and you can play with it all day after they leave. How do you think your friend would feel after you said yes and handed them the toy?

4

Demonstrate the acceptance of disappointment. Ask the child: How would you feel if the same day you went over to your friend’s house to play and they did not let you play with their favorite toy? If the child responds with ‘sad’ or something similar, explain that sadness is

14 • Central California Parent • June 2024

often called disappointment, and it’s okay to feel that way. Educate them on how sometimes things don’t always go our way, but that’s okay because there are so many other ‘toys to play with’ in life.

Explore the concept of sharing ‘thoughts and feelings’. Ask them, "Do you think it would be okay to share your feelings of sadness or disappointment with your friend?" Tell them that sharing feelings in a kind way is a positive thing to do. "Maybe your friend did not know they hurt your feelings." Practice sharing feelings in several role plays.

Revisit the term friendship and what it means to ‘support each other’. Ask them who they would call or talk to if they were sad, mad, hurt, or confused—besides yourself. Ask them if their friend would say the same about them if asked the same question. Explain that this is called ‘support’ in a friendship and that it takes both friends to make it work, just like each of the two wheels on a bicycle.

5 7 6

Introduce the concept of ‘speaking up’. Sometimes a child may feel they are not being heard—even though there are friends and family all around them. Explain to them they are never alone, and all they have to do is ‘speak up’ and talk to someone about how they are feeling. Give an example of a child who has their feelings hurt by a friend who called them a hurtful name. They say nothing for days because they think others will laugh at them. Then, they told a friend who listened, and reminded them how wonderful they were, and the child felt so much better afterwards for speaking up. Remind the child that a friend could also be a teacher, family member, or other adult in their life.

Take the time during play, mealtime, or bedtime to introduce these concepts, your child will benefit from the comfort and support of a lasting friendship.

Overall, friendships are integral to children’s social, emotional, and cognitive development, playing a significant role in shaping their well-being and sense of identity. Furthermore, healthy friendships can last for years and add value and insights to a child’s life for years to come. I often think of Michelle and what had become of her, as I lost touch when she moved away to Nevada when I was twelve. I’ll never forget our adventures and the special bond we created as friends.

The Gecko Without an Echo is Cheryl Denise Bannerman's first children’s book. Meet Earl the Squirrel and Tim the Gecko, the most unlikely pair of pals you'll ever encounter. Tim, the carefree gecko, is overjoyed to explore the lush woods with his squirrel buddy, Earl. They scamper through the greenery, sharing secrets and giggles, and creating memories that will last a lifetime. But there's one teenytiny problem that tugs at Tim's little gecko heart—Whenever he shouts his name, there's no echo of his own voice. With every step they take, your child will be drawn into a world of wonder and discovery, sharing in the excitement of each revelation.

Who Qualifies?

Families qualify for the Alternative Payment Program based on two criteria “eligibility” and “need”.

“Eligibilit y”

To be “ eligible”, a family’s income must meet eligibility requirements set by the State Department of Social Services, Child Care and Development Division.

“Need”

A family “needs” childcare based on one of the following: parents are employed, in school, or participating in a training program, parents are incapacitated or are unable to adequately care for their child(ren), children with special needs (medical, psychological, or if the child(ren) needs care as protection from abuse or neglect.

CalWORKs Families (current and former recipients)

Childcare is a critical part of your success as a former or current recipient of CalWORKs (or AFDC) benefits. For former or current CalWORKs recipients, Supportive Services, Inc. can provide funding if you meet eligibility requirements.

How May I See if I Qualif y?

Currently there are more families in need of assistance than there is funding to help. A waiting list of eligible families is kept to fill funding slots as they become available. To be placed on the waiting list, you may contact (559) 230 -2030 or visit our website at ssifresno.org.
