Dear Reader, Here comes the holiday season! Seeing the beautiful holiday decorations throughout the stores and feeling the chill of winter coming reminds me of the anticipation I used to feel for this holiday when I was a child. I love decorating the house with stockings, lights, and greenery, choosing and decorating the tree, the woodsy smell of evergreen throughout our home, finding and giving gifts, baking and decorating holiday cookies, and all our traditions we practice year after year. It's supposed to be the most wonderful time of the year, but research confirms a different reality—most Americans are stressed out during the holiday season. In her article, "Keep it Light: 10 Ways to Simplify the Season," author Janeen Lewis, gives practical tips to help you focus on what matters most. Flip to page 8 to downsize holiday stress this year. Along with our monthly calendar on page 15, we are also featuring family-friendly holiday festivities. Don’t miss page 10 where we’ve made a list—and checked it twice— of parades, lights, festivities, and more! Find an event happening in your area and go have fun enjoying all that the Valley has to offer! This year, we're presenting our eleventh annual 12 Days of Giveaways and we want all our readers to participate! Make your holiday jolly by winning a toy that your children—and whole family—will love. Visit ccparent.com to see our full list of giveaways and to enter for a chance to win! 5 Healthy Habits to Help Reduce Stress Photo courtesy of Getty Images

Between work, family obligations, and a constantly changing world, people in the United States are stressed. In fact, U.S. workers are among the most stressed in the world, according to a State of the Global Workplace study. While some stress is unavoidable and can be good for you, constant or chronic stress can have real consequences for your mental and physical health. Chronic stress can increase your lifetime risk of heart disease and stroke. It can also lead to unhealthy habits like overeating, physical inactivity, and smoking. All while also increasing risk factors, including high blood pressure, depression, and anxiety. However, a scientific statement from the American Heart Association shows reducing stress and cultivating a positive mindset can improve health and well-being. To help you understand the connection between stress and physical health, the American Heart Association offers these science-backed insights to help reduce chronic stress. Stay Active: Exercise is one of the easiest ways to keep your body healthy and release stress. Physical activity is linked to a lower risk of diseases, stronger bones and muscles, improved mental health and cognitive function, and lower risk of depression. It can also help increase energy and improve quality of sleep. The American Heart Association recommends adults get at least 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity activity, 75 minutes of vigorous activity, or a combination. Mental Health Struggles Surfacing After Pregnancy Welcoming a new life into the world can be an exhilarating and transformative experience. However, for some new mothers, the postpartum period can bring about a range of mental health challenges that can have a significant impact on their well-being. If you, a friend, or family member are pregnant, brush up on the mental health disorders that can surface after pregnancy, their symptoms, causes, and how to find relief. The postpartum period can be accompanied by various mental health disorders, each with its own set of symptoms. Postpartum Depression: • Feeling more than just the "baby blues" • Disconnection from baby and the world • Disinterest in activities, including mothering • Fatigue and loss of appetite • Depression related to motherhood Postpartum Anxiety: • Constant worry about tasks and responsibilities • Rumination about doing things wrong • Perfectionism and unrealistic expectations Postpartum OCD: • Intense, irrational thoughts or images • Rituals involving baby safety to prevent harm Postpartum Psychosis: • Hallucinations and confusion between reality and thoughts • Hearing voices or having visions The surge and decrease in pregnancy hormones, especially during the first trimester, can lead to imbalances in mood and thinking. Additionally, the continuous demand on a new mother's time and energy without proper rest can exacerbate these imbalances. While symptoms can occur during pregnancy, they are often heightened during the postpartum period due to these factors. To find relief from postpartum mental health struggles, parents should seek professional help when symptoms interfere with overall functioning and the ability to connect with baby. It's crucial not to delay seeking assistance. Additionally, finding a support system of compassionate individuals can provide a much-needed outlet for sharing experiences and seeking help. The duration of postpartum mental health symptoms varies from woman to woman. Symptoms can be short-lived or extend beyond the postpartum period, making it crucial to address them promptly. By recognizing and addressing these challenges, new mothers can receive the care and support they need to thrive during this transformative phase of life. –Dr. Jenny Yip, renewedfreedomcenter.com

Need Help Paying for Childcare? Who Qualifies?

Families qualify for the Alternative Payment Program based on two criteria “eligibility” and “need”.

“Eligibility”

To be “eligible”, a family’s income must meet eligibility requirements set by the State Department of Social Services, Child Care and Development Division.

“Need”

A family “needs” childcare based on one of the following: parents are employed, in school, or participating in a training program, parents are incapacitated or are unable to adequately care for their child(ren), children with special needs (medical, psychological, or if the child(ren) needs care as protection from abuse or neglect.

CalWORKs Families (current and former recipients) Childcare is a critical part of your success as a former or current recipient of CalWORKs (or AFDC) benefits. For former or current CalWORKs recipients, Supportive Services, Inc. can provide funding if you meet eligibility requirements. How May I See if I Qualify?

Currently there are more families in need of assistance than there is funding to help. A waiting list of eligible families is kept to fill funding slots as they become available. To be placed on the waiting list, you may contact (559) 230-2030 or visit our website at ssifresno.org.

Keep it Light 10 Ways to Simplify the Season

I

t's supposed to be the most wonderful time of the year, full of friends, family, and festivities. However, research confirms a different reality—most Americans have elevated stress levels during the holiday season. Instead of being full of good tidings and cheer, families often feel drained of time, energy, and peace. Stressors such as shopping, party planning, financial concerns, and trying to make the holidays perfect, can make the end of the year hectic and overwhelming. These ten tips will simplify the season and make it merry and bright.

1. Focus on your reason for the season. Why are you celebrating? Is it for spiritual reasons? Maybe you want to spend time with friends and family or enjoy the spirit of giving during the holidays. Keep what is most important about the holidays at the center of your celebration. Reconsider any task or commitment that takes your time, energy, enjoyment, or finances away from your reason for celebrating. 2. Set firm boundaries around your time. With all the holiday volunteering, office parties, and family gatherings, it's easy to overcommit yourself. This year, pick one project you want to volunteer your time to, or pick a variety of simple acts of kindness you can do with your family. Spend time with your friends and loved ones, but don't feel guilty if you don't go to every party or gathering.

by Janeen Lewis 3. Let go of perfection. One of the most stress-relieving things you can do during the holidays is set the bar a little lower. Your social media is likely flooded with elegant hosting ideas, but everything doesn't have to be picture perfect for a beautiful season. Embrace simpler decorations, meals, and gift giving. Try shortcuts or holiday hacks. If you let go of expectations, you may be pleasantly surprised to find yourself content with a celebration you hadn't even envisioned. 4. Farm out your to-do list. At the beginning of the season make a to-do list of what you want to accomplish. If you find that it is too long for the amount of time that you have, consider delegating some of the items. Have groceries delivered or buy gifts online to avoid the holiday rush. Grocery stores also have a plethora of prepackaged holiday foods that make delicious sides, cutting down on your time in the kitchen. Buy desserts from your local bakery and shop at stores that provide wrapping stations. No time to clean the house? Hire a cleaning service just for the holiday season or ask for this service as a gift. 5. Gift others with experiences. Holiday shopping can be time-consuming and nerve-wracking with crowds and traffic. If you don't start early, coveted items sell out, leaving you scrambling for another gift. Ask those you give gifts to if there is an experience they would like to have. Tickets to the theatre? Family passes

to an amusement park or aquarium? A relaxing day at the spa? Experience gifts are unique and give friends and family the opportunity to make memories and pamper themselves. 6. Set a holiday tea time. Recent research shows that drinking green and black tea has many health benefits, including promoting relaxation. Herbal teas help with anxiety and stress. In keeping with the holiday spirit, sip some calming peppermint tea, or try chamomile, lemon balm, or passionflower. 7. Take a hike. One way to tell your stress to take a hike might be to actually take one yourself. When you exercise, your body releases chemicals called endorphins that trigger a happier, more relaxed mood. Aerobic exercise outdoors away from screens, phones, and to-do lists can clear your mind and help you keep what's important in perspective. If a hike isn't possible, try fitting in small walks around the neighborhood with your family. 8. Reconnect with long lost friends and relatives. Meet with an old friend you haven't talked to for years, and catch up. Take some time off and visit relatives you miss seeing on a regular basis. Surrounding yourself with people you enjoy is powerful when you want to combat holiday stress. Continued on page 20

Continued from page 8 9. Do something kind for someone else. You don't have to overcommit yourself to a charity or fundraiser to be kind. Small random acts of kindness can make someone's day. Let someone jump in front of you at the supermarket line or let someone drive their car in front of yours in the parking lot. Send an anonymous Christmas card with cash or a gift card to a college student or elderly person that you know is struggling financially. Throw change in Salvation Army buckets when you pass them. Attach quarters in clear storage baggies to parking meters or laundry mat machines with a printed, positive message. Having a kind spirit chases away stress and keeps the season warm and full of hope. 10. Celebrate memories more than material possessions. Finances can cause a lot of stress at the holidays. There is nothing wrong with downsizing the amount of money spent on gifts. Making gifts or drawing a name out of a hat and buying one gift for that family member can take off the pressure of buying gifts for everyone. A white elephant exchange is an entertaining and inexpensive way to celebrate. Material gifts are nice, but most of us quickly forget gifts we have received in past years. The thing that we remember the most are the memories we make with friends and family. Make some happy memories this holiday season and bid stress good bye.

Continued from HealthWatch on page 6 reduce blood pressure, improve sleep, support the immune system, and increase your ability to process information. Practice Positivity: A positive mindset can improve overall health. Studies show a positive mindset can help you live longer, and happy individuals tend to sleep better, exercise more, eat better, and not smoke. Practice positive self-talk to help you stay calm. Instead of saying, “everything is going wrong,” re-frame the situation and remind yourself, “I can handle this if I take it one step at a time.” Show Gratitude: Gratitude—or thankfulness—is a powerful tool that can reduce levels of depression and anxiety and improve sleep. Start by simply writing down three things you’re grateful for each day. Find a Furry Friend: Having a pet may help you get more fit; lower stress, blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar; and boost overall happiness and well-being. When you see, touch, hear, or talk to companion animals, you may feel a sense of goodwill, joy, nurturing, and happiness. At the same time, stress hormones are suppressed. Dog ownership is also associated with a lower risk of depression, according to research published by the American Heart Association. Visit heart.org/stress for more stressmanagement tips. Stress 101 Understanding stress is an important step in managing and reducing it. Consider these things to know about stress and how it could affect your life: • Today, 1 in 3 adults in the U.S. report being worried or depressed. • Higher levels of the stress hormone cortisol are linked to increased risk of high blood pressure and cardiovascular events like heart disease and stroke. • The top sources of stress are money, work, family responsibilities, and health concerns. • Work-related stress is associated with a 40% increased risk of cardiovascular disease like heart attack and stroke. —American Heart Association
