Families qualify for the Alternative Payment Program based on two criteria “eligibility” and “need”.

“Eligibility”

To be “eligible”, a family’s income must meet eligibility requirements set by the State Department of Social Services, Child Care and Development Division.

“Need”

A family “needs” childcare based on one of the following: parents are employed, in school, or participating in a training program, parents are incapacitated or are unable to adequately care for their child(ren), children with special needs (medical, psychological, or if the child(ren) needs care as protection from abuse or neglect.

CalWORKs Families (current and former recipients) Childcare is a critical part of your success as a former or current recipient of CalWORKs (or AFDC) benefits.

For former or current CalWORKs recipients, Supportive Services, Inc. can provide funding if you meet eligibility requirements.

Dear Reader, In the spirit of the beginning of the school year, we’re focusing on back-to school. First up is, “Back-to-School Prep Essentials,” on page 8 where Kimberly Blaker highlights what you can do to prepare for a successful new school year. Plus, on page 9 we’re giving away backpacks to four lucky winners!

Much like a Monday morning, the new school year signifies a chance at a clean slate. It is the time to set new goals, rekindle good practices, and avoid the mistakes of the past. While that might seem like a lot to bite off after a summer in the sun, it’s really as easy as learning your ABCs. Flip to page 22 for, “The ABCs of a Successful School Year,” where Pam Molnar offers 26 goals, reminders, and challenges to take you through a happy and healthy school year.

Back-to-School Tips Enjoying your summer vacation? Back-to-school season is probably the furthest thing from your mind. However, if you have a slow day this month, it might help to start thinking about ways to ease back into the school routine.

Here are some tips and tricks to make the summer-to-school transition as effortless as possible: Beat the new school blues: Whether starting kindergarten, moving into a new school district, or just changing schools, make the transition easier by taking your child on a tour of the school to find their classroom, the cafeteria, and the bathroom. For older children, go over a school map and their schedules with them.

Cleaning out their closet: Get rid of any clothing and shoes they may have outgrown. Also, note the school supplies you may already have so you don’t make any unnecessary purchases. Consider reusing items left over from last year or purchasing from a second-hand store to stay on budget.

Designate a home base: Purchase a calendar or white board to stay organized with schedules, lessons, practices, due dates, and other events. Set up an uncluttered space to do homework and give each child a cubby, drawer, or shelf to keep their items handy and organized.

Safety in numbers: Before sending your child off to school, write your home, work, and cell phone numbers on an index card and slip it in your child’s backpack for a quick and easy reference in an emergency. You may also want to consider including the contact numbers of a trusted friend or neighbor in case you are unavailable.

Check your team roster: Check in with your ‘team’ which may include carpool parents, after-school caregivers, enrichment programs, or grandparents. Contact everyone on your team to make sure they are still available this year.

Prioritize health: Schedule physicals for any vaccinations, flu shots, or vision and hearing tests before the doctor’s office gets overwhelmed.

Early to bed and early to rise: To help ease the transition before school starts, provide plenty of downtime prior to bedtime and move up your child’s bedtime 15 minutes each night until they return to the usual school-night routine.

Hunger Free America is now ramping up its efforts to publicize the USDA National Hunger Hotline—which can be reached at 1-866-3-HUNGRY or 1-877-8-HAMBRE (for Spanish)—through which callers can locate summer meal sites for kids, food pantries or soup kitchens for families, and other government and private meal programs near them. August is National Immunization Awareness Month. NIAM was established to encourage people of all ages to make sure they are up to date on the vaccines recommended for them.

Communities have continued to use the month each year to raise awareness about the important role vaccines play in preventing serious, sometimes deadly, diseases. Visit cdc.gov/vaccines for immunization schedules, travel information, and more.

The Young at Art Exhibition is back at Arts Visalia, 214 E. Oak Avenue in Visalia. Featuring the artwork of participants in Arts Visalia’s summer children’s classes, the exhibition is a great opportunity to see all the young artists’ creative work. HealthWatch An Update on your Family’s Health and Welfare

Prioritizing Infant Safe Sleep: A Deeper Look at SIDS and the ABCs When it comes to ensuring the well-being of infants, safe sleep practices hold a vital place. The "Sleep Safe Baby Campaign" delves into the importance of these practices in preventing Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), an unforeseen and devastating event that can claim lives within the first year of infancy.

SIDS, characterized by the sudden and unexplained death of an otherwise healthy baby—often during sleep—is a leading cause of infant mortality. Although the exact causes of SIDS are still unclear, research has identified numerous risk factors and precautionary measures. The foremost among these is following the ABCs of safe sleep—having babies sleep Alone, on their Back, and in a Crib.

A is for Alone: Babies should sleep without any items such as pillows, blankets, toys, or bumpers in their sleep area. It's vital to understand that these seemingly innocuous items can increase the risk of SIDS by creating potential suffocation hazards.

Furthermore, while room-sharing is recommended for the first six months, bed-sharing should be avoided.

B is for Back: Babies should always be placed on their back to sleep. Since the "Back to Sleep" campaign launched in the 1990s, there's been a significant decrease in SIDS cases. When babies sleep on their stomachs or sides, they're more susceptible to SIDS due to potential breathing obstructions.

C is for Crib: Infants should sleep in a safety-approved crib, bassinet, or playpen with a firm, flat surface. Soft or loose bedding, including comforters, quilts, and pillows, should be avoided as

these items increase the risk of suffocation.

Although the ABCs provide simple guidelines, implementing them requires consistent effort. This is where community awareness and education come into play. Regular reminders, community events, healthcare provider advice, and even media campaigns can all contribute to ingraining these safe sleep habits in the everyday routines of caregivers.

Beyond these general practices, it's also essential to consider individual circumstances. Factors such as exposure to smoke, overheating, and even the baby's immunization status can impact SIDS risks. Caregivers should work closely with healthcare providers to understand these aspects fully.

Of course, this conversation wouldn't be complete without acknowledging the emotional side of SIDS. The unexpected loss that families experience can be overwhelming. Therefore, comprehensive support systems for grief and trauma, as well as education on SIDS, are integral to our community response.

While SIDS remains a significant public health issue, adopting safe sleep practices like the ABCs is a proactive step toward prevention. As a community, we must rally together, spreading awareness and knowledge about these crucial practices. By doing so, we take a powerful stance towards safeguarding our little ones and nurturing their well-being right from the start.

Ultimately, the goal is simple, yet profound: every infant, in every home, practicing safe sleep, every time.

6 Ways to Build Lasting Healthy Habits Starting on a path toward healthy habits is often easier than maintaining them long term. Avoid a major pitfall of healthy resolutions and build healthy habits that stick, by working small, positive steps into your daily life.

In fact, healthy habits are the first suggested treatment strategy for people whose blood pressure and cholesterol levels are creeping higher than normal, according to an American Heart Association scientific statement.

“The current guidelines for managing high blood pressure and cholesterol recognize that otherwise healthy individuals with mildly or moderately elevated levels of these cardiovascular risk factors should actively attempt to reduce these risks, and increasing physical activity is a great place to start,” said Bethany Barone Gibbs, Ph.D., chair of the statement writing group and chair of the department of epidemiology and biostatistics at West

Bust Common Habit-Building Myths: You may be surprised to learn the truth about creating and sticking to healthy habits.

One myth is getting healthy means doing things you don’t like.

Research shows positive emotions make habits stick, so set your intentions on something you enjoy. Another misconception is big results require big changes, which may lead to overly ambitious habits. However, the simpler the routine is, the more likely it is to become habit.

Work with Your “Brain Loops”: Your brain creates “loops” for habits made up of three things: a cue, a routine, and a reward.

Back-toSchool Prep Essentials Is Your Family Ready for a New School Year?

he start of a new school year with a new routine that takes over most of the kids' waking hours is a significant transition from the long lazy days of summer. Whether your child is just beginning school for the first time or is a seasoned student, a new grade level or school with new teachers, classes, and expectations requires an adjustment.

Children and parents alike may feel a range of emotions as the back-to-school season quickly approaches. So ease your family's anxieties by adequately preparing for and setting the tone for the new school year.

Establish Rules and Routines A new school year means a fresh start and transition from your schedule over the break. Even from one school year to the next, it's smart to reevaluate school year routines and rules. Your kids are a year older and might be in new schools, have new teachers, have different schedules, or be ready for new responsibilities. So sit down as a family to discuss rules and expectations while also allowing your child some input. Setting clear expectations

ahead of time can help things go more smoothly.

Here are some things you'll want to determine: • Each person’s responsibilities • A daily schedule • A family calendar for the year, months, and weeks • Different expectations between weekdays and weekends • Screen time restrictions • Rules around spending time with friends • Homework routines and expectations • When kids need to be awake, eating breakfast, and ready to leave for school • How kids will get to and from school and related expectations

Take Safety Precautions Your child's safety is a significant concern when heading back to school and away from your watchful eye. Travel safety between home and school—whether your kids walk, ride a bike, take the bus, or carpool—is especially important. So, create a safety plan for your kids before school resumes.

by Kimberly Blaker A reliable way to communicate with your child is essential to their safety. Phones are available that are appropriate for kids of all different ages. Just be aware of your school's policy regarding devices and make sure your child abides by the rules.

For younger children, screenless devices are excellent options. These devices are designed specifically for children's safety and come with features like GPS trackers and the ability to communicate with limited contacts.

Another useful way to protect your kids is to use location tracking apps. If you have older kids with phones, there are many apps for sharing or tracking locations using their phones. Options include GPS tracking or geofencing, where you define a certain perimeter for your child and get notified if your child leaves that area.

Be sure to set expectations that your kids check in at certain times and before leaving or arriving at a new destination. Also, designate trusted emergency contacts and plans for unexpected events and make sure your child knows who you've chosen.

Schedule Routine Check-Ups Get your child up-to-date on health screenings, especially vision and hearing tests, before the school year starts. If your child has problems with hearing or vision, it can severely impact their education.

Discovering and addressing any issues ahead of time will prevent unnecessary struggles and reduce or eliminate their need for support or accommodations. Young kids often don't realize they have a fixable problem or are unable to articulate their difficulties. So seeing a doctor or professional for screenings is essential to getting young children off to a good start.

Find out what's on your child's supply list and see what you can provide your child or their class. Even if their school provides supplies, it's good to have supplies at home for homework or projects.

Ask your child's teacher what would be helpful to have at home. Basic supplies usually include at least a backpack, pens, pencils, paper, and a binder or folders.

If you don't have the financial means to cover your child's supplies, help may be available. Check with your child's school or the public library to see if they offer assistance or know of any programs that can help. You can also check for local Back-to-School events that may be handing out free supplies.

Even kids who are excited about getting back to school and seeing their classmates often feel some amount of trepidation about a new school year. Going back to school should be a time of celebration and new beginnings. So treat it like a holiday and start a back-to-school family tradition! Have your child choose a special outfit for the first day of school. Talk with your kids about what everyone is excited about and looking forward to in the new school year. Also, make school year resolutions and help your kids set realistic goals. Involve your kids in the process of preparing for the new school year, and find ways to make it fun to ensure a smooth transition.

Why Parents Should Pursue Growth, Not Perfection

Y

ou might be trying to be a perfect parent if: You feel like a constant failure even when you are constantly trying so hard to get it right.

You change your parenting tactics on an hourly basis. "Please let something work," is echoing in your head.

Your favorite part of the day is putting your kids to bed. At least then the madness will end, right?

Yep. I’m guilty. I’ve realized this about myself. Don’t get me wrong, some days, I have it majorly together. I am patient, I don’t raise my voice, I go to bed, pat myself on the back, and think, “Maybe I am figuring this out.” Then the next day is the complete opposite and reality slaps me in the face.

It's like someone is telling you, “Not too fast. Don’t think you have it all together just yet.”

You lose your temper. Lose your patience. Maybe you yell. Or the kids don’t listen well. Maybe you don’t handle a situation with grace. Instead, you lose your cool. Then, you feel like a total failure.

Sound familiar? The truth is, we’re all

figuring out this parenting thing as we go.

There will never be a perfect parent.

Sometimes we are trying so hard to be perfect, that we get desperate. Desperate parenting never feels good. Here are a few signs you might be trying to be the perfect parent: You actually feel a driving need to have things perfect.

Children are not perfect. Yet, my expectations for them sometimes must make them feel like they have to be. I used to feel like my need for perfectionism was rubbing off on them.

Instead, if we can focus on the idea that mistakes mean growth, our whole family environment shifts. Kids need to make mistakes in order to grow. Guess what? So do parents!

You feel a need to get it right.

When we all start out as parents, we just want to do everything just right. We want our kids to turn into good, responsible, caring human beings. So, we focus on doing everything perfectly, but is it the end of the world if we mess up? Of course not!

Instead, we can say, “I’m sorry,” and admit to our kids that we don’t know

everything. The last thing we want to pass on to our kids is this idea that they need to be perfect. So don’t expect it of yourself.

Instead, show them that we are learning right along beside them.

You want to control the outcome of everything.

Parents get desperate because they want to control their surroundings. Yet, when you are a parent—let’s admit it—life is out of your control. You think you have a plan, but kids will always change it. Whether it be a bodily function that throws things off or their sheer will during a tantrum. Truth be told, the world won’t end if sometimes we feel out of control.

The growth mindset we can have when we feel out of control as parents is to try to slow down and focus on what is within our control. Refocusing our brains to see the good things often helps us feel less like a failure.

You have strong feelings of being overwhelmed and feeling inadequate.

of desperation. I’ve realized this about myself. Yet, we are all a little inadequate when it comes to parenting, aren’t we? If you're feeling this way constantly, then there's a very good chance that you're aiming for perfection in some aspect of your parenting.

Perhaps the lesson for this one is to lower the bar. Parenting can force us into thinking that the expectations have to be so high.

After all, our kids lives are hanging in the balance, right? What if we mess them up?

The truth is, no parent is going to keep up with all the expectations they had before becoming parents, so maybe it’s time to let some of those expectations go.

It's possible to let go of this bad parenting habit of aiming for perfection. After 16 years of parenting, I'm aiming more for survival most days now. As I’ve let go trying to reach for perfection as a parent, I’ve realized it really has helped me grow in ways of which I've never dreamed.

So what should you do to try to pursue growth, not perfection?

I've been there, friend. I know what that feels like. Try asking yourself these questions and see if you can readjust your focus: • What are the consequences if I let (blank) happen?

• Is that consequence that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things?

• Is the situation hopeless?

• What would the non-desperate parent do?

• Am I trying to control something I can't control?

• What happened last time I was in this situation? Did we get through it?

There is no need to be desperate in our parenting. The definition of desperate is, “Feeling, showing, or involving a hopeless sense that a situation is so bad as to be impossible to deal with.”

That definition kind of makes me laugh, because when you put that word together with parenting, it seems ludicrous and truthful at the same time. How many of us have felt hopeless that our parenting tactics are not working? Or that our children are impossible!? Yet, deep down, I don’t believe parenting is a desperate situation.

Let go of perfection and accept yourself right where you are.

Each time the loop is repeated, it becomes more routine and may become automatic. Knowing this, you can design cues for developing new, healthy habits, such as setting walking shoes by the bed to start a walking habit. The routine is putting on the shoes and walking around the block, and the reward is the pleasant sensations and brighter mood from a morning stroll.

Create Cues That Work for You: Most successful health habits begin with a cue. The cue can be external in your environment or internal in terms of your mindset. The more consistent the cue, the more likely it is to trigger the habit. Hacking your brain’s reminder system can help you remember your cue. Some examples of visual cues are placing a sticky note where you’ll see it often, keeping a water bottle on your desk, or refrigerating fresh veggies at eye level.

Small habits done consistently can add up to big results. To create a new healthy habit, think through the steps that could lead to your desired outcome. Ask yourself whether you want to do it, if it’s easy, and if it’s high impact. It’s important to choose habits that make a difference and move you closer to your goals.

For example, if one of your goals is improving your heart health, a meaningful habit might be to move more. Increasing physical activity can help lower blood pressure and cholesterol along with many other health benefits, Gibbs said.

“Every little bit of activity is better than none,” she said. “Even small initial increases of 5–10 minutes a day can yield health benefits.”

Use Rewards to Make Habits Stick: Start by choosing a habit you enjoy that’s rewarding by itself. If you’re more of a dancer than runner, increase your physical activity with an upbeat dance class.

You might also look for a more enjoyable version of a new habit, such as getting more fruits and veggies by sipping on a delicious smoothie.

Understand Resets are Part of the Process: New habits are experiments. If they don’t stick, you haven’t failed. Instead, you’ve learned what doesn’t work, which is useful. Get curious and ask yourself which part of the habit didn’t work for you. Maybe the cue was ineffective. Maybe the steps of the routine were too ambitious and you need to split them into smaller, easier steps.

If you realize you don’t enjoy the habit, stop doing it and try something else.

The ABCs of a Successful School Year

A

by Pam Molnar successful school year is as easy as learning your ABCs. Check out these 26 simple tips for a happy and healthy school year.

Accept New Challenges: Push your child to go outside of their comfort zone.

Encourage them to try activities, learn new sports, and make new friends.

Breakfast: We all know breakfast is an important meal. If your child does not have time for a sit-down breakfast, provide on-the-go breakfast foods like egg bites, fruit, or protein bars.

Chores: Give your child a few jobs that you expect done each day before or after school, such as making their bed or feeding the dog. A little bit of responsibility will go a long way!

Downtime: Be sure to add free time to their schedule. These are the times your child can relax on the couch, dive into a hobby, or have a last-minute pick-up game with friends in the neighborhood.

Grab and Go Snacks: Your child will be hungry after school. Instead of grabbing a handful of cookies, provide them with prebagged, healthy snacks that won’t interfere with the dinner hour. Think veggies and dip or hummus and crackers.

Nutrition: Plan healthy meals ahead of time. Stock up on ingredients for quick healthy meals that your family enjoys. Save time by using the crockpot or prepping food ahead of time.

Organization: Save yourself some sanity in the mornings by organizing things the night before. Lay out clothes, make lunches, and put backpacks and shoes in the same place each night.

Provide a Good Example: While words are important, your actions mean so much more. Model good behavior for your kids.

Quality Time: It is easy to get wrapped up in the busyness of back-to-school schedules. Try to plan family dinners or game nights. It is important to stay connected and catch up with each other.

Rules: Remind everyone of the school year rules. Reestablish bed times, discuss the when, where, and how long for electronics use, and other school-year rules.

Social Media: Reconfirm what social media sites your child belongs to and check all passwords.

Help Them—to an Extent: We want our kids to succeed, but they have to learn by doing. Give suggestions, but remember that it is their name on the paper.

Take Time to Talk: Open your schedule each day and let your kids know when it is a good time to come to you with problems and concerns. You will get more out of the discussion if you are both tuned in.

Illness: It’s back to school and back to a room full of germs. Stock your child’s backpack or desk with tissues and hand sanitizer. Remind them to wash their hands and to sneeze into their arm.

Use Time Wisely: As our kids get older, their commitments increase. Teach your child to use their time wisely by prioritizing so they aren't up late finishing homework.

Join: Encourage your child to join activities at school. It gives them a sense of belonging and they will be more than just another face in the crowd.

Volunteer: See what goes on at school, meet the teachers, and interact with the other parents. Even working parents can get involved by helping at evening and weekend events.

Keep Trying: It is hard to see your child not get the role, position, or grade that they hoped for. Encourage your child to pick themselves back up and try again.

Workspace: Establish where your child will do their homework. Choose a space that is quiet and has all the tools they need.

Exercise: Balance your child’s sedentary school day with plenty of exercise.

Combine unstructured play with friends with a more structured team practice.

Limitations: While being a part of extracurricular activities is important, sometimes they are overwhelming. It’s okay to say no to invitations and extras when you see your child is overwhelmed.

Friends: Encourage your child to invite new friends over so you can get to know the people your child is spending time with. It is a great opportunity to meet their parents, too.
