Cape Cod National continues to hold a very prestigious position as the largest club-sponsored endowment within the Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund. Today, our fund maintains a balance of approximately $500,000 enabling Cape Cod National to actively support our caddies with scholarships as they pursue their college careers. Indeed, we have been fortunate to witness many success stories as these individuals graduate, begin their careers and become important members of society. We routinely hear from them about their emerging lives and their neverending gratitude for the assistance and support that we provided to them. It should give all of us satisfaction to know that we have helped them in their pursuit of a quality education.
The success of this program results from both the ongoing contributions made by many of our members as well as the continued and exciting growth of CCN member families who have elected to become Lifetime Members of the Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund. To date, forty-eight families and individuals have made lifetime contributions which has formed the bulk of the principal balance of the Cape Cod National Endowment. All of this is making a difference in the lives of our recipients and their families. As we all are aware, the cost of a college education has become very challenging. Without avenues of support, the dreams of these young individuals cannot be achieved. Their success in completing their college education and entering meaningful careers is of mutual importance to us and them – and is possible through the commitment made by CCN members.
Last August, at a reception held at Cape Cod National for our Lifetime Members, we were fortunate to hear from Lauren Mason, a Ouimet Scholar during her four years at Bentley College, express her deep gratitude for the difference our support meant to her.
Lauren is just one example, among many, of what this program means for all of us.
We are pleased that this year four individuals received a total of $ 43,567 from the CCN endowment plus $33,737 from the Francis Ouimet General Fund. Our Club works in concert with the Francis Ouimet General Fund to enhance the ability to provide enough support to offset the growth in costs associated with a college education. We also were able to provide $750 in support of educational needs to eight individuals who were awarded Honorary Scholar distinction. I hope you take an opportunity to review the bios of our recipients, as these people, together with all our past recipients, represent our hope for the future.
Also, in 2023, as noted in a separate section of this newsletter, a scholarship fund was established in memory of Jimmy Byrne, a former Member at CCN, who passed away unexpectedly in 2022. Several of his friends created an endowment in his memory and annually award a scholarship to one of our caddies. This year, Aiden Roche, a current caddie, was awarded the first “Jimmy Byrne Scholarship”.
Again, thank you all for your great support of our endowment and for your continued interest in helping these individuals achieve their dreams.
Sincerely,
Kathy Guillard CCN Ouimet Chair
THE FOUR CCN ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS RECEIVED $43,567 IN TOTAL FINANCIAL AID FROM THE CCN ENDOWMENT.
The Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund was founded in 1949 by friends of Francis Ouimet and the Massachusetts Golf Association. In that first year, $4,600 was distributed to 13 students. Since 1949, the Fund has awarded $49.85 million in need-based college tuition assistance, including $3.25 million to 455 recipients in 2023, to over 6,600 deserving men and women who have worked at least two years as a caddie, in a pro shop or in a course maintenance department at a Massachusetts golf course. These scholars, meanwhile, have gone on to excel in school, achieving a 3.4 GPA average and 92% graduating from college within four years.
In addition to their general scholarship program, the Ouimet Fund offers the opportunity for individuals or groups to permanently endow an additional award. They are given to existing Ouimet Scholars who meet the requirements set by the people endowing that scholarship. Currently, there are more than 191 endowed scholarships within the Ouimet Fund, which accounts for 35 percent of the annual scholarship budget, with several being funded by private clubs such as Hyannisport, Woodland, Brae Burn, Oyster Harbors, Eastward Ho! and more.
Cape Cod National endowed an award within the Ouimet Fund in 2006 to be given annually to a
deserving Ouimet Scholar who had worked at least two seasons at CCN. The CCN Endowed Scholarship was initially funded by gifts from John, Linda and Doug Pfeffer, along with monies that the CCN Members had raised to support the education of a favorite caddie.
Kathy Guillard – the 2018 Ouimet Chair of the Year, alongside Mike Walker – took over as CCN Ouimet Chair in 2011 and has continued to expand upon the great work that Bob and Robin Arnold did during their tenure. The Club’s endowment, meanwhile, has grown over the past decade-plus to total over $504,000, becoming the largest clubsponsored endowment within the Ouimet Fund in the process. With the growth of the endowment, CCN has been able to move from one annual award to multiple recipients each year.
While many of the CCN Members have supported the endowment over the years, special recognition is due to those who have joined the Francis Ouimet Society as Lifetime Members.
Those wishing to contribute to the CCN Endowed Scholarship should contact CCN Ouimet Chair Kathy Guillard or visit the Club Administration Office for more information. Learn more about the Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund at www.ouimet.org
THE JIMMY BYRNE SCHOLARSHIP, an annual award administered by the Ouimet Fund, was established by CCN Members and close friends following the sudden passing of longtime Member Jimmy Byrne on Dec. 20, 2022.
Jimmy grew up as a caddie in New York to put himself through St. John’s University, and the award will provide valuable financial assistance to caddies, as well as students working in the golf shop or on the golf course to pursue their own educational goals.
Jimmy’s absence was felt by many, and several CCN Members took the lead on how to best honor our friend, and the outpouring of generous support to establish this permanent legacy was a testament to Jimmy as a well-loved and respected friend, coworker, coach, husband and father.
Members of the Francis Ouimet Society to honor Jimmy. A special “thank you” is in order to those CCN Members for their significant contributions: John and Paula Perlowski, Brian Casey, Jeff and Sara Lou Sherman, Jose and Romy Minaya, David Gooding, Frank McFaden, and Bob and Kathy Brown.
Since its introduction in 2023, the scholarship has quickly risen to total nearly $100,000 thanks to generous donations by CCN Members.
There are currently 191 active endowed scholarships within the Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund, totaling more than $22.5 million.

On August 19th, Steve, and representatives from a few other local Clubs will attempt to play as many holes as possible in one hour (on foot with a caddie) here at CCN.
The Ouimet Golf Sprint is the most unique endurance challenge in golf, bringing together individuals, golf clubs, and businesses across Massachusetts for a summer event that significantly impacts students working in the game of golf. Participants strive to play as many holes as possible in one hour, all while sharing the Ouimet story to support need-based scholarships.
