Welcome to fall!

I'm looking forward to experiencing my first autumn here in Incline Village and Crystal Bay and getting to see firsthand what this season offers. On the IVGID front, this fall will be busy as usual.

Community Open Houses

I'd like to say Thank You to everyone who attended the IVGID Community Open House, held on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at The Chateau at Incline Village. We were thrilled to welcome approximately 225 community members who took the opportunity to engage directly with IVGID’s employees, leadership staff, and individual board members.

Attendees had the chance to meet with IVGID's Engineering and Public Works staff and senior managers to discuss significant District capital projects in various stages of planning, design, and construction.

The feedback received from attendees was overwhelmingly positive regarding the event format. Many expressed that this Open House provided an excellent and accessible way to learn about and provide input on IVGID's major ongoing projects and initiatives.

Welcome Message from robert harrison

If you missed the event but still wish to provide feedback on one or more of the capital improvement projects discussed or provide thoughts on the strategic plan before that process begins, you can submit an IVGID Community Open House Public Comment Form at https://bit.ly/open-house-comments.

Facility Fee FAQ

Each year, IVGID establishes an annual Recreation Facility Fee and Beach Facility Fee – collectively referred to as the “IVGID Facility Fees” –collected from property owners within the District through an annual tax levy that is billed with your property taxes. For this upcoming tax year these include a $720 Recreation fee and a $655 Beach fee respectively –a total IVGID tax bill of $1,375, which represents a fairly significant increase compared to the past two years that reflected historically low fees, at an unsustainable level to finance and sustain the District.

These fees are determined based on the revenues required to support the District's debt, capital expenditures, and operations for the District’s various recreation and beach facilities. Combined with service charges collected for facility use and program activities, these revenues sustain the operations funded by the Community Services Fund and Beach Fund.

To help answer the most common questions we have received, please find the Facility Fee FAQ page online at https://bit.ly/ivgid-facility-fee-faq.

District Strategic Planning Process

It has been several years since the District last completed a strategic plan. Our intent with the District strategic plan is to utilize long-term thinking and financial planning in pursuit of the mission, vision, values and objectives of the District.

We welcome community involvement in this strategic plan process and encourage all IVGID residents to participate in future open houses and community events. For more information, please see: www. yourtahoeplace.com/about-ivgid/ resources/district-strategic-plan/

So, as you can see, it's a busy time of year in IVGID's world, even as some of the summer crowds die down. I hope you get to spend some time outdoors enjoying the changing seasons while finding ways to stay connected to the important projects we're moving forward with here in our community.

Sincerely,

In early August, we emailed parcel owners a letter from the IVGID Board of Trustees regarding the Employee Beach Access Program. Scan the QR code to view the letter if you didn’t receive it via email/mail.

BECOMING A BETTER BOCCE BALLER

Tips from the Bocce Boyz Bocce ball requires a special blend of skill and acceptance that things don’t always roll the way you expect them to in this world. But as I found while playing with the crew that calls themselves the “Bocce Boyz” on a Wednesday morning this summer, the

camaraderie that comes with playing the game with a group of friends here in Incline Village can be truly life changing.

Built in 2020 next to the Recreation Center at 980 Incline Way, the Incline Village Bocce Ball Park offers a great opportunity to get together with friends and family for a casual, or competitive, game of bocce.

On any given day you might find players from age 2 to 102 out enjoying the fresh air amidst the pines, playing on one of the four bocce courts made with a special material called “Bocce Mix” that was imported from Arizona.

On Wednesday mornings at 10 a.m., the average age creeps up, as many of the Bocce Boyz are in their late-70s, 80s and even 90s - but that doesn’t mean their games are tame. On the contrary, there is a huge amount of good-natured trash talking associated with playing bocce, as well as a lot of ball-themed nicknames.

I rolled up ready to take some photos and ask for some real-world playing tips from the Bocce Boyz who were at the courts that day, only to be immediately recruited into a game.

On the day I played with the group, Ken “Hair Balls” Hubbart was joined by Jim “Pickleballs” Fisher, Jim “Admiral

Numballs” McConnell, “Bayou” Betsy McConnell, Sandy “Cheese Balls” Ballantine, Mike “Delivering them Balls” McCallum, and Wayne “Mothballs” Matott, the latter of whom lives in Reno and drives an hour each way just to play with this group of friends.

“It’s a game anybody can play, you just need to come down and try it,” said McCallum, who at age 77 considers himself a junior member of the Bocce Boyz. “Obviously there’s no age limit, and it’s a good way to stay active and enjoy the company of other people.”

Getting the Bocce Ball Park built in Incline Village was important to the Bocce Boyz and other local players. According to Hubbart, they were traveling all the way to Truckee to play bocce before the local courts were built, as the only other bocce court in town before 2020 was the single court at Ski Beach.

When asked for playing tips, the most important thing is simply to “Show up”, according to Hubbart. “It’s an easy game… Get some people that you enjoy being with and just have fun.”

Many players bring their own bocce sets with them to the courts, but even that isn’t necessary. The Incline Village Recreation Center has bocce sets to rent for $20 per day.

The rules of bocce - which has been played in some form since the days of Julius Caesar, according to Hubbartare fairly straightforward and can be found online with a simple search. But there isn’t anyone out there policing folks and making sure you are playing the “right way.”

On a court adjacent to the two taken up by the Bocce Boyz on the day I visited, the Gonzales family was playing their own game with a slightly smaller bocce set and different rules. But the commonalities of good-natured

competition and family bonding were there none-the-less.

So while we list a few more tips to improve your game, getting better at bocce is really as simple as Wayne Matott’s advice to me that day:

“Find some people who want to be healthy, have some fun and make fun of each other, and just come play.”

Playing Tips

1. Master the basics of grip and release On the Bocce Mix courts, the smoothness of the surface means the ball will often roll further and with less friction than on looser surfaces. This amplifies the importance of a consistent grip and release. A relaxed underhand pendulum swing remains ideal. Focus on a very smooth release, letting the ball glide off your fingertips. Any jerkiness or inconsistent spin will be more noticeable on the Incline courts, potentially sending your ball off course. Practice drills where you aim for a specific distance repeatedly to dial in your power and release point.

2. Get to know the court surface

The Incline Village Bocce Mix courts offer a great playing surface that is

GentleCure - Non-surgical Skin Cancer Treatment

neither too hard nor too soft. The fine, compacted nature of the court surface means the ball will generally roll true, with minimal deviation from its initial path, with some exceptions. This is a double-edged sword: good shots are rewarded with precision, but errant throws are also unforgiving.

One big advantage for players willing to pay attention is the fact that balls generally leave a track as they roll along, allowing an observant player to see deviations in the court surface and adjust future throws accordingly. And keep in mind that weather can have a big impact on the court surface.

Continued on page 20

Dr. Billie Casse Do., FAAD, FAOCD

“Every week it’s different. If it’s rained it will be a slow court to start with and as the sun comes down and dries it out it becomes faster. So you have to take all those things into consideration as you’re rolling.” - Ken “Hair Balls” Hubbart

3. Strategic pallino placement: When it's your turn to throw the

pallino, consider the speed of the IVGID courts.

• Long and Fast: Bocce Mix lends itself well to longer pallino throws, as your bocce balls will have more room to roll out.

• Open Court Tactics: Since rolls are truer, you might prefer placing the pallino in more open areas, encouraging a game of precision where accurate lags are rewarded.

• Leverage the Sides: If the court has well-defined borders, consider placing the pallino closer to the sideboards. On Bocce Mix, a ball that hugs the board can be very difficult to beat.

Want to be a Bocce Pro?

Practice these Drills

1. Pointing Accuracy Drill

Place the pallino at different distances (short, mid, long) along the court.

Fun Bocce Court Facts!

Roll 4 balls, aiming to stop within 12 inches of the pallino each time. Focus on consistent force adjustment for each distance.

2. Line Control Drill

Lay down a rope or chalk a straight line on the court.

Practice rolling balls along this line to train directional accuracy and smooth releases.

3. Shooting Precision Drill

Set an opponent’s ball 2-3 feet in front of the pallino.

Practice lofting throws to strike it away while minimizing movement of the pallino.

4. Block and Guard Drill

Place the pallino and roll one of your balls near it.

Practice rolling your next ball to stop in front of your first ball, creating a defensive block against opponents.

5. Court Reading Drill

Roll balls diagonally across the court at different force levels to observe how the surface texture and slopes affect roll direction and speed.

Note areas of faster or slower roll for strategic use in games.

Did you know that the Incline Village Bocce Ball Courts have the ultimate playing surface? Bocce-Mix® is a finely ground aggregate blended with our proprietary macrobiotic powders and stabilizers to emulate a clay surface. Unlike clay, Bocce-Mix is easily maintained, can be played both as a hard (fast) surface or played soft (slow). Bocce-Mix is dust-free, will not track, and is not susceptible to loss with wind. It also holds up well under rain and snow, making it ideal for the mountains.

Bebot at Incline Beach

ECO-CLEAN Solutions’ BEBOT, a solarpowered robot, was deployed at Incline and Ski Beach to help clean up after the Fourth of July holiday. This specialized endeavor was funded by Incline Fireworks. The BEBOT robot sifted through the top layers of sand July 6-7, removing a variety of litter and plastic debris in these crucial locations, next to the lake.

The collected litter was sorted, and the trash was logged. Some of the top items collected over the almost 46,000 square feet were plastic items (316 pieces) and more. Overall, 531 items were collected and the beaches were transformed thanks to this amazing technology and the team behind it!

"IVGID maintains some of the cleanest beaches we've operated on, and their proactive approach in deploying the Bebot to tackle the invisible issue

of buried debris shows exceptional environmental stewardship that addresses both present conditions and long-term sustainability," said JB Harris, ECO-CLEAN Solutions founder and chief executive officer.

Learn more about the BEBOT and other technologies by ECO-CLEAN Solutions at eco-cleansolutions.com.

New Propane BBQ Grills Installed

The District currently operates a total of 36 outdoor barbecue grills, located at our beaches and parks. IVGID has recently installed six new propane BBQ grills at Burnt Cedar Beach, with plans to install additional propane grills at the other District beaches in the future. Look for the new barbecues at the picnic areas on the east side of Burnt Cedar Beach and near the peninsula adjacent to the pool.

Currently, the propane BBQ grills can be attached to standard refillable 3-gallon or 5-gallon propane tanks, which can be brought from home or purchased locally. (Note: the grills will not connect to the small, campingstove-style 16oz. canisters.)

TENNIS COURT REPLACEMENT PROJECT

As many of you know, our beloved tennis courts have seen better days. They’re well past their intended lifespan and have taken a hit from years of deferred maintenance. While we were recently able to complete some much-needed emergency repairs on Courts 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7, we are still working on some bigger upgrades in the near future.

We are hoping to fully replace all the tennis courts and the parking lot over the next four years. This won’t happen all at once—the work would be staggered over the next few seasons to minimize disruption to play. We’re still in the early planning stages and will keep you in the loop as timelines are finalized. Visit the Tennis & Pickleball Center Court Replacement Project page for more information and updates. Also on the horizon: new windscreens to freshen up the facility and improve playing conditions.

Thank you for your continued support and enthusiasm—we can’t wait to share more updates soon!

Why Golfers Shouldn’t Swing Wedges at Full Power

If you’re new to golf, you’ve probably heard that wedges are “scoring clubs.” That means they’re meant to help you hit short shots close to the hole, especially from inside 100 yards. But one of the most common mistakes beginners make is swinging their wedges as hard as they can. It might feel like more power = better shot, but that’s not true when it comes to wedges. Here’s why you shouldn’t swing your wedges at full power, and what to do instead.

1. You’ll Have Better Control

Wedges are all about control, not distance. If you swing really hard, it's easier to hit the ball too far or not far enough. A smooth, easy swing gives you more control over where the ball goes. Think of it like tossing a ball to a friend—do you throw it as hard as you can? No! You toss it gently so it lands where you want.

2. You’ll Hit the Ball Cleaner

When you swing at full speed, it’s harder to make clean contact. You might hit behind the ball (called a “chunk”) or hit the top of the ball (called a “thin” shot). By swinging softer, you stay more balanced and make better contact, leading to better shots more often.

3. The Ball Will Stop Faster on the Green Wedges are designed to make the ball spin. This helps it stop quickly after it lands. But if you swing too hard, the ball might fly too high and roll too far. A controlled swing puts more spin on the ball and helps it stop closer to the hole, giving you an easier putt.

4. It’s Easier to Control the Height

A big, fast swing often sends the ball

Continued on page 32

THE GOLF COURSES AT INCLINE VILLAGE®

too high into the air. This makes the ball harder to control, especially if it's windy. A smooth, shorter swing keeps the ball lower and on target. You’ll feel more in control, and your shots will be more consistent.

5. You’ll Have More Options

Golf is all about choices. If you’re always swinging your wedge at 100%, you don’t have much room to adjust. But if you practice half-swings and three-quarter swings, you can hit a lot of different distances with the same club. This makes you a smarter, more flexible golfer.

What Should You Do Instead?

• Take shorter swings—about 50% to 75% of your full effort.

• Practice hitting your wedge different distances with these softer swings.

• Focus on accuracy and feel, not just power.

• Use your body, not just your arms, to swing smoothly.

Golf isn’t about hitting every shot hard— it’s about hitting the right shot. With your wedges, less really is more. Smooth, easy swings will help you hit the ball more solidly, control your distance, and give yourself better chances to score.

So next time you grab your wedge, relax, take a shorter swing, and trust it. You don’t need to swing hard—you just need to swing smart.

potential Snowflake Lodge Replacement Project

Snowflake Lodge at Diamond Peak Ski Resort is an iconic midmountain lodge offering panoramic Lake Tahoe views unrivaled in the Lake Tahoe area. Diamond Peak skiers and riders have enjoyed thousands of meals, après-ski beverages and special events at Snowflake, and many have asked why we don’t do more at the venue.

Renovations to the main Diamond Peak Base Lodge were last made in 2008; however, the Snowflake Lodge has never been upgraded since originally constructed in 1966 (other than the addition of more outdoor seating on the deck).

As noted in the 2015 Diamond Peak Master Plan document: “The Snowflake Lodge is a much beloved destination for the

Diamond Peak community. The site is tremendous, affording unprecedented views of Lake Tahoe, and has the added bonus of being close and accessible from the base. The existing building is small and is in need of modernization. In addition, the capacity analysis of the existing winter operations identified a resort-wide seating deficit, which was particularly pronounced at the Snowflake location.”

Given these needs, IVGID has restarted community discussions and planning around the possibility of rebuilding Snowflake Lodge to meet the needs of the ski resort and community as the resort enters its seventh decade of operations.

Where is the project at in the planning/design/ construction process?

As of July 2025: IVGID has hired the SE Group to study and come back with recommendations on many aspects of the potential project including space use programming, capital expenditure analysis and financial modeling, as well as to conduct future community and stakeholder collaboration meetings/outreach. Go to bit.ly/snowflake-project for more project details, including the SE Group’s statement of qualifications for the project.

How can I provide my feedback on the project as it evolves?

Please fill out the form at bit.ly/snowflake-project to share your thoughts on the project. All public comment will be forwarded to the resort managers and District engineering team that is working to refine the project.

The project is slated to begin May 1, 2026 and finish up by the end of July 2026, which will allow for public use and skate camps to be held in August 2026.

Funding for the Skate Park Enhancement Project comes from IVGID’s Community Services Fund combined with a $250,000 American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) grant from Washoe County. Find more project details online at www. yourtahoeplace.com/news/skate-parkenhancement-project/

This program is for plant materials only; bags with excessive dirt, rocks, or pet waste will not be accepted and may be subject to additional charges from Waste Management. You can also drop off loose or bagged yard debris using the stickers at Incline Village Transfer Station. Loose drop-off is encouraged and reduces plastic bag contamination.
