HYUNDAI GIVEAWAY

The Central Coast Mariners have teamed up with Booth’s Motor Group to giveaway A BRAND NEW Hyundai Accent to one lucky spectator who attends a Hyundai A-League match at Central Coast Stadium during the season! Booth’s Motor Group, located at both Tuggerah & Gosford are a proud partner of the Central Coast Mariners and have kindly put a car on offer, to be won by the lucky person who is randomly drawn at our last Hyundai A-League home match against the Newcastle Jets. Mariners’ fans must hang onto their ticket and simply visit one of the Booth’s dealerships the following week with their match day ticket to go into the draw. The more matches you attend, the more chances you have to win! Central Coast Mariners Members have even more of a reason to be excited about this season long competition, as they have the opportunity to DOUBLE their chances! A scan of your membership card on arrival activates an automatic entry and if you visit a Booth’s Dealership during the week, you can submit your second entry for that round. Head to ccmariners.com.au for more info

“A massive game today against the Wanderers who are in fine form at the moment which means that the bandwagon will be nice and full so plenty of their fans should make the trip! Don’t be shy and come and join us in bay 16 to help drown them out. To come away from Melbourne with a 2-1 defeat against the Champions is not the worst result in the world but there’s no hiding from the fact we need to start grabbing more points, especially at home. The last time we played WSW at home was Hutcho’s last home game for us and that night was special, so lets make this night one to remember as well.”

LET’S GET THE BOYS OVER THE LINE TONIGHT! ccmariners.com.au

Q & A WITH... SHAUN MIELEKAMP, CEO CCM: Shaun, you joined the Mariners in May – how have you found the first six months? The first six months have been brilliant, I am amazed at how quickly things have changed and how supportive everyone at the club and within the Central Coast community has been. The club is going through a significant change in direction to ensure long term growth and sustainability. No path to success is an entirely smooth one so whilst there have been challenges on and off the field overall we are in a really good place with clarity on the future and what we need to do to get there. CCM: This will be the first time you’ve been on the other side from a club you helped build, how does that feel? It is really hard to comprehend to be honest and I don’t know how to describe the feeling. It will be a very surreal feeling as my last game with the Wanderers was when the Mariners beat them 1-nil after a cracking Josh Rose goal here in the coast. My feelings are also conflicted with my recollection of the biggest day in Mariners history being one of the toughest for the Wanderers as I was on the Allianz stadium pitch feeling despondent after a 2 nil loss at the grand final. So my main memories being on the other side of Mariners vs Wanderers matches is where the Wanderers are heartbroken after important matches are lost to the Mariners, So I can’t wait to see what that feeling is like on the other side when I am wearing Yellow and Navy. The real challenge for me will be at home with the kids. My oldest boy has to remain a Wanderer and he understands that once you have a team you stick with them no matter what; my youngest is a Mariner and he has no choice in that decision. However my middle child; the poor thing can pick his own team and is at least once a week seen wearing a Mariners jersey and a Wanderers cap or vice versa. So I have a feeling that the biggest result of today’s match will be who at the end of it will he be supporting. I am sure that Josh Rose will make sure he remains a fully committed Marinator from now on. CCM: Talk us through some of your career highlights as a sports administrator? Career highlights are something I haven’t reflected on always feeling like the best highlights are ahead of me. There is no doubt that being able to stand on the podium in Saudi Arabia and experience history as the first Australian team to win the Asian Champions League stands out immediately. Likewise my time at Penrith Panthers working for Phil Gould and seeing my concept of players wearing full pink jerseys to raise funds and awareness is something that I didn’t realise

ccmariners.com.au

Q & A WITH... SHAUN MIELEKAMP, CEO at the time how much of an impact this would have is a very special highlight for me. Working with Russell Crowe and Peter Holmes a Court is yet another time that I pinch myself about the journey I have had and I am proud to have once called myself a Rabbitoh. However deep down I know that my greatest highlights are still to come for me. For me to play a part in making sure the Central Coast Mariners are a club that my kids and their kids will always be proud of and represents them and what they stand for here in the coast is a highlight I have to achieve. It is a really important time for the club right now and this opportunity is something not for the faint hearted and an achievement I know will surely be the highlight of my career. CCM: You’re a keen player, how did your Kariong Cougars team fair this season? This is a loaded question if ever I have heard one. Whilst the Over 35’s made the semi finals and the MAA9’s who I also fill in for made the semi finals I take absolutely no credit for either of them as my results as a striker this season is something that not even Dino Kresinger would be proud of. In saying this my coaching career was off to a great start with our WAA1’s team winning the grand final, again it wasn’t me and all the girls need to take the credit here especially Alana Magee our captain (and the real coach) who ensured that my football season last year was a very special one that is right up there with the highlights of Saudi Arabia. CCM: As a sports administrator you’ve had some weird and wonderful moments. Can you tell us about some of the unique experiences you’ve had during your career? Here we go again another loaded question, to answer this properly we would need another 73 pages in this program. Whilst I could talk about crazy RBB moments; handing out tickets at half time with Michael Jennings or copping a spray from Russell Crowe during a TV documentary as you mentioned I must talk about the two times I have been in a mascot suit. The first time I was once again in the middle of Allianz stadium feeling despondent however this was many years ago as a Panthers Mascot when I almost caught on fire because I couldn’t see and just stopped short of running into the big flame throwers at the Panthers vs Roosters semi final. My more famous moment was at the Legends of Origin match at Parramatta stadium when because of poor guidance by my wife I ran into the stage in the middle of the field in front of a sell out crowd. The matter was made worse when my supposed good friend Mark Geyer ratted me out on radio the next day and I am sure that the You tube footage is still getting plenty of hits today. CCM: Saudi Arabia, England, Morocco, Japan, China - football has taken you to some incredible parts of the world – how has your time in football differed to the time you spent in rugby league? Football has allowed me the unbelievable opportunity to work in a direction that I truly love and build on my passion to see how Football Clubs can connect and make a huge difference to the community. Rugby League was a different proposition that whilst had 100 years head start also had 100 years of good practices and bad habits. The A-League being new and growing at a rapid rate have given me an opportunity to do things that other sports clubs could only ever dream of. This is achieved through our community engagement programs such as our club nights and when we get to have our coach meet supporters off the bus at Newcaatle only moments before kick off I know that I am no longer in Rugby league territory.

MARINERS PLAYER TO PRAISE by @darcyologhlen

NICK MONTGOMERY After the retirement of John Hutchinson last season, it seemed a natural progression to appoint Nick Montgomery as the Mariners’ fourth full-time captain. His football, which is played in a similar vein to Hutch, doesn’t possess the flair and class that Anthony Caceres and Fabio Ferreira show off, but rather provides the Mariners’ with much-needed grunt and legwork in midfield. Despite being 34-years-old, ‘Monty’ generally covers more space than any other Mariner on the park at around 12 kilometres a game and has also been a key factor in the club’s high-pressing game, with an equal league high 26 tackles to his name. Just recently, we’ve also been able to witness the captain’s versatility, putting in fantastic performances in defence and playing a key role in the gritty #F3Derby draw at Newcastle. Beyond the field, it’s clear the biggest role ‘Monty’ has to play at the Mariners is mentoring the next generation of youth into the stars of tomorrow. Likewise, many of the Mariners’ young crop would be eager to soak up his knowledge of what it was like to play at Wembley, Anfield or Old Trafford, or against guys like Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez. His influence in that regard isn’t just restricted to the Hyundai A-League, with Tottenham Hotspur defender and England international Kyle Walker giving ‘Monty’ a shout-out on Instagram a few months ago for his role in building him into the footballer he is today. At the tail end of his career, ‘Monty’ has demonstrated that age is no restriction and still has plenty to provide to the Mariners on and off field. SEASON

WANDERERS PLAYER TO PRESSURE by @darcyologhlen

FEDERICO PIOVACCARI Labelled a “disaster” by Fox Sports pundit and former Mariner Mark Bosnich, 16 club Italian striker Federico Piovaccari joined the Wanderers over the off-season, we think to score goals, but the jury is out on that one. Compared to other recent Hyundai A-League imports such as Bruno Fornaroli, Milos Trifunovic and our own Roy O’Donovan, Piovaccari has made a slow start to life down under, scoring only the two goals for the Red & Black. A journeyman if ever there was one, only once in Piovaccari’s 15 year long career has he spent any more than two seasons with a club – that being Italian Serie B club Treviso. In Piovaccari’s nomadic career he’s managed a UEFA Champions League goal at Steau Bucharest in 2013/14 as well as the Golden Boot award in the 2010/11 Italian Serie B competition. Despite some time on Inter Milan’s books, he never played a game for the Nerazzuri and the 31-year-old didn’t do a lot when he was given some time in the Serie A. So is Piovaccari a stopgap solution or someone Western Sydney think can contribute long-term to the growth of the club and league? Obviously not brought in to sell tickets or boost coverage around the club, Piovaccari is the latest in a line of marquees we’ve seen recruited to play a role. That role is to score and the pressure will pile on Piovaccari if he can’t lift his conversion rate soon. With the most passionate fan base in the league behind them and history of guys like Shinji Ono, the expectations are high for this Italian striker. SEASON
