Vuka reaches the 300 milestone

18 years ago, Danny Vukovic stepped foot onto an A-League pitch for the first time. Coming into the side for an injured John Crawley against Melbourne Victory, the Mariners keeper stopped an Archie Thompson penalty on debut to announce himself to the Central Coast.

Over five seasons, ‘Vuka’ played more than 100 times for the Mariners in his first stint with the club, keeping 32 clean sheets during that time. The shot stopper was a part of our 2007/08 side who claimed the club’s maiden premiership, keeping eight clean sheets that season.

Following this initial period with the Mariners, Vukovic left to play with Turkish club Konyaspor. He left shortly after, joining the Wellington Phoenix on a one season contract.

His seventeen matches in New Zealand included something that has still never been repeated in the A-League, with Vukovic scoring a goal from the penalty spot against North Queensland Fury in the final minute of a 3-1 win.

A season with Melbourne Victory followed, making 30 appearances across the A-League, the then named FFA Cup and AFC Champions League. Initially signing on a three-year deal, the keeper left after one campaign on personal grounds.

Signing with Sydney FC on a two-season deal, the shot stopper went on to have one of the most historic goalkeeping seasons in A-League history.

16 clean sheets across the campaign, while conceding just 12 goals, was and still is an A-League record. That sole season at the club culminated in both a second premiership and his first championship.

That historic season saw him signed by Belgium outfit Genk, where he spent four seasons while having his first taste of European football. Leaving the club a hero after his stint, a campaign with Eredivisie side NEC Nijmegen followed, before opting to return to Australia.

The rest, as they say, is history. The exSocceroo goalkeeper is now preparing to walk onto an A-League field for the 300th time, marking another incredible chapter in an illustrious career. Something that has been achieved just six times in the competition’s history, Vukovic truly is one of the greats.

Playing at five A-league clubs, having two premierships and a championship to his name, it is fitting that the achievement is marked with the Mariners on the same pitch that it all began on.

From there he had a four-year stint with Perth, playing over 100 matches for the Glory. This included 25 clean sheets, becoming a fan favourite during his time in the West.

Up against his former club, Melbourne Victory, in the Grand Final, Vukovic stopped Marco Rojas’ penalty in a tense penalty shoot-out, winning the title for the Sky Blues.

Awarded the captaincy after the retirement of club legend Matt Simon, Vukovic returned to where it all began this season. Signing for the Central Coast Mariners, the skipper has played every game for us so far this campaign.

It is a truly special achievement to reach 300 A-League matches. Everyone at the Central Coast Mariners would like to congratulate Danny on the remarkable achievement and thank him for his service to the club so far. Good luck today, Danny!

DYLAN WENZEL-HALLS

One of the newcomers to the squad during the recent transfer window is talented forward Dylan Wenzel-Halls and I for one am pretty excited about it! The 25 year old transferred over from Western United to the Mariners with over 100 games in the A League under his belt. DWH has established a reputation as an attacker with plenty of pace and a bag of tricks that no defender would welcome coming their way.

In a team that loves to play free flowing attacking football you can see why WenzelHalls is so happy to become a Mariner. As well as being a real asset in attack you couldn’t meet a nicer bloke off the field and it’s definitely traits like this that will endear him to the Mariners faithful. Once we see DWH able to get on the park, which hopefully by the time we go to print he has, I’m sure he will become one of those players that we just want to see get the ball at his feet.

I think it’s fair to say that over the years there has been a number of players wear the yellow and blue that we just naturally get to our feet because they have the ball in the final third. There is expectation amongst the crowd as our focus is just on the excitement machine about to let fly. Dylan is one such player and the experience he has gained in the league already can only add to the Mariners attacking options.

Still in his mid twenties Dylan Wenzel-Halls has some big seasons ahead and it will be of great interest to see what impact Monty has on the striker. With a reputation for getting every bit of talent out of his players I honestly believe it’s a case of DWH….watch this space!

Academy Profile: KIARA FONTANILLA

Signing for the Mariners at the beginning of 2023, Kiara Fontanilla has been a standout for the Mariners Women’s first grade side so far this season.

A Philippines women’s national team goalkeeper with the aim of participating in the upcoming 2023 FIFA World Cup to be held in Australia and New Zealand, the shot stopper has made multiple Mariners Academy team of the weeks’ so far.

The only two goals that she has conceded have been penalties, keeping two clean sheets in three matches.

With a big season ahead for the Mariners Women’s Academy side, the goalkeepers experience on the biggest stage, including against Australia in the 2022 Asian Cup, is extremely valuable. Be sure to watch Fontanilla and the Mariners this season at Pluim Park as they chase the FNSW League One title.

E-League reaches midpoint of groups

His e-leagUE partner Lachlan Neal has had a tough but valuable few matches to begin his season, unable to secure three points over his first three game weeks. This has not meant that the debutant has been an easy beat for anyone, battling it out with some of the best in the country.

Mariners in the community

The 2023 E-League competition has reached the midpoint of the 2023 regular season, with both Brady Carr and Lachlan Neal taking on some of the nation’s best FIFA players so far.

Off the back of debuting in last season’s competition, Carr has been one of the biggest x-factors of the season so far. His dramatic first day win over ADL Jaz got the whole league talking, including scoring a goal with our very own Dylan Wenzel-Halls. His full-time interview with his room full of Mariners gear caught the attention of fans, including a special desk used to hold the iconic Masterfoods sauce bottles.

It didn’t stop there for the youngster, narrowly going down to top players Negede and Mattbro37 in box office matches. Whether it was top class goals, impressive skill moves or trading ‘griddy’ celebrations with his opponent, Carr has been a must watch player this season.

At the time of writing, Carr’s third matchday was postponed, having already completed his fourth last Wednesday evening.

Tight contests against Boom FC and NoahJa almost saw him collect his first victory of the league, going down in close battles. Neal’s ‘Won’t Back Down’ attitude has been on full display, as he aims to secure the first win of his campaign.

You can catch all of the E-League action on the E-League Australia or CCMariners Twitch channels over the coming two Tuesday and Wednesday nights, or keep up to date on all the action via our socials and website.

The Mariners would like to thank partners MATE, Harvey Norman Electrical Erina, Lake Haven & Gosford, inStyle Estate Agents, Signarama Tuggerah and Anytime Fitness for ALL OF their support.

The Central Coast Mariners have been busy over the past few weeks, going out and about to visit schools and communities throughout New South Wales. A trip to Holy Cross Catholic School in Kincumber saw Moresche and Brian Kaltak play indoor football with students. The pair sitting down and talking to the youngsters about their careers so far, and what they have learnt to date.

Mariners staff also took part in a Mid-West Road Trip, facilitating six clinics across Dubbo, Orange, Bathurst and Mudgee. They visited Lue Public School and St Matthews Catholic School on their travels, leading upTO our magic 4-1 win over Macarthur in Mudgee.

These visits are incredibly important for the club, as we pride ourselves on being known as ‘The Community Club’. It is an important club value to be out in schools and other places in the Central Coast, meeting some of our youngest fans.

Next week, Industree Group Stadium will be turning mathematical, with the help of the University of Newcastle and Central Coast Sports College. The Maths with Mariners program aims to help teens who are having difficulty with maths by providing physical activity which integrates maths to provide greater understanding. 10 schools will be taking part, with Mariners players attending throughout the day.

This week, in partnership with Star 104.5, players visited numerous schools around the region. Nine total schools were visited, including Woodport Public School, Woy Woy South and many more, with players saying hello and meeting young fans around the Central Coast.

The Central Coast Mariners would like to thank all of the schools for having us over the past few weeks. Keep an eye out over the coming months for more school visits from our Mariners team.

Thank you to each of our volunteers, from all of us at the Central Coast Mariners.

BOOTS FOR COOK ISLANDS

Hello Fellow Football families, We recently returned from a holiday in the Cook Islands and being Football Tragics we were able to find some local games to watch.

At the conclusion of the first game we watched, U/15 boys, we noticed that when they came off the field they were removing their boots and shinpads to pass onto the next team to take the field, the U/15 girls. Then again when the girls came off the field after their game they removed their already twice worn boots and shinpads and passed them to the next team to take the field, the U/17 boys! This was sad to witness and totally unexpected.

We then had a chat to one of the referees about this situation and said that we would like to find some way to help out here. She recommended who we should contact due to there being some issues with the Official Association. After making contact we had a visit from the Sports Manager from the Cook Islands Sports & National Olympic Committee (CISNOC).

We made the decision to see if we could obtain pre loved, reasonable condition, football boots and shin pads to send back to The Cook Islands for distribution to those families/players who could not afford to purchase their own gear.

This is where our Fellow Football Families can help us.

We will be collecting pre loved boots and shin pads for the next few months with our aim to get them to the Cook Islands in time for their 2023/2024 season.

If you feel that this is something that your organisation can help us with we would be happy to chat further regarding collection options.

Yours in Football
