The backlog of games caused by postponements due to COVID, and the Asian Champions League, has had a serious knock on effect in terms of the continuity of the competition.
Certainly it needs to sort out some issues like being able to have the option of watching the game from the start, even though it has been in progress and having the ability to rewind and go back to parts of the match.
Fans are confused and have lost track of where and when games are being played. The League has been forced to play catch up and resort to midweek games that seriously undermines the bottom line of clubs. With the other major football codes gearing up to start their seasons, it is going to be difficult for the league to get any traction, either marketing or media wise, as it heads into the second half of the season.
But, is all lost? No. Australian football is a resilient beast. Critics have tried to kill it off many times over the years but we keep bouncing back and always with hope in our hearts. The new controllers of the competition need time because nothing ever comes easy.
Thankfully, we have new broadcast partner in Paramount, which has taken over from Fox. Paramount has had its issues and fans are not totally won over.
But, give them time. Remember Optus Sport had plenty of issues, but they eventually got it right. The competition has a sponsor in Isuzu UTE while US firm Silver Lake has a 33.3 per cent minority stake in the League believed to be worth $A140 million all a good sign of confidence in the sport. The true test of where the national competition is positioned will come next season and beyond. But, for the time being, fans should get behind the competition and enjoy the football on offer and the exciting, young talent coming through.
