The Comedy of Errors theatre program

DIRECTOR’S NOTES

The Comedy of Errors begins with a shipwreck that sets the stage for one of Shakespeare’s most chaotic comedies. Egeon, the father of twin boys both named Antipholus, also has another pair of twins, both named Dromio, who serve as their attendants. After a violent storm, Egeon is only able to save one Antipholus and one Dromio, losing track of the rest of his family.

Years later, the surviving Antipholus and Dromio arrive in Ephesus, unaware that their long-lost brothers have been living there for years. A series of hilarious misunderstandings ensue as the twins are constantly mistaken for each other.

The Comedy of Errors is one of Shakespeare’s shortest plays, and for this production, we have chosen John Minigan’s adaptation. To give it a fresh twist, we’ve set the play on a Greek island in the vibrant 1980s, capturing the era’s wackiness with bold costumes, big hair (which, in itself, was a comedy of errors), and the obsessive pursuit of aerobics fitness.

Rehearsing this play with 35 energetic students from CCGS, MLC, Iona, and Shenton College has been an incredibly joyful experience. It’s not easy to tackle a Shakespearean play, especially one with such complicated wordplay, but the students have embraced it wholeheartedly. Some have attended rehearsals even when they weren’t called, showing their enthusiasm and commitment to the production. The laughter, camaraderie, and lasting friendships that have blossomed during rehearsals are proof that this experience has created unforgettable memories for everyone involved.
