If you prefer to go the DIY route, you can perform your own energy assessment with the help of this handy step-by-step guide from the U.S. Department of Energy.

You can find a professional energy auditor in your area by consulting either RESNET or the Building Performance Institute.

The best way to get a handle on your home energy usage is to schedule a home energy audit.

They Use the Right Apps Enlist your smartphone in the quest to become more energy efficient. There are many apps out there that track your energy usage and make recommendations to improve your efficiency. Most of these apps are available free or for a small fee, and can help you determine where you can generate effective energy savings.

Wouldn’t you want to get in on the game too? …

They Know Their Usage

An audit can help you determine how much energy you use, identify problem areas where you might be losing energy, and plan necessary energy-saving improvements.

They Close the Gaps Find and seal any air leaks around windows and doors with inexpensive caulking, spray foam, and weatherstripping. Closing up cracks and gaps can cut down on heating and cooling costs, and will make your home a more comfortable, draft-free environment. You should also check for and seal any leaks or gaps around chimneys; in any areas where plumbing, ductwork, or electrical wiring comes through the exterior walls; around recessed lights; and around bathroom, kitchen, and dryer vents.

They Bundle Up Put on a sweater. Seriously, there are many reasons why winter fashion magazines are filled with models wearing sweaters. Not only do they look great and camouflage any winter weight gain, sweaters keep you warm. Layering your clothes—say, a long-sleeve T-shirt under a mid-weight sweater topped by a fleece-lined jacket or vest—will keep you warm on the coldest days. As a bonus, wearing a sweater allows you to turn down the thermostat but still remain comfortable. In your quest for cozy warmth, you may also want to check out fleece-lined jeans and fuzzy wool socks.

They Program Their Thermostat If you don’t have a programmable thermostat, it may be time to make the investment. These clever devices allow you to set the temperature to rise or lower automatically according to your work and sleep schedule. When no one is home, lower the thermostat in winter and raise it in summer so you're not paying to heat and cool an empty house. Program the thermostat correctly, and it will reward you with a savings of 10 percent or more on your heating bills.

They Use Their Windows If you're not leveraging your windows to boost household energy efficiency, you're missing a big opportunity. During the winter months, keep shades, blinds, and curtains open during the day to let in sunshine and provide natural warmth and light. Come sunset, close window coverings tightly to minimize heat loss. If your windows are older and less efficient, you may want to consider installing heavier draperies for the winter to keep warm indoor air from escaping.

They Dry Strategically Don’t overlook the obvious: Your dryer is a huge source of heat. Not only does a dryer dry your clothes, but it also puts out a large amount of heat into the room. Choose to do your laundry at a time when you actually need that heat—first thing in the morning or as soon as you get home from work. Running the dryer overnight is a waste of heat, because you’re already snug and warm in bed. They Insulate Heat rises, and when it does you better hope your attic is properly insulated to keep all that warmth from escaping your home. The Department of

They Skip the Fire

They Use Motion Sensors

Replace your manual light switches with motion-sensor versions so lights will automatically turn off when no one is in a room. Sensors are especially effective in bathrooms and children’s rooms, where lights are often left on by accident, resulting in wasted electricity.

Energy advises that a properly insulated attic can reduce your energy bills by 10 to 50 percent. Consider insulation as your first defense against energy loss. It reduces airflow and prevents drafts that suck warm air out of a home. There are many types of insulation, including loose fill, batt, fiberglass blankets, and cotton. Do your research to determine which type of insulation will be best for your home and how much you'll need for your climate and house type.

While you’re replacing the switches, consider swapping out energy-

It might seem counterintuitive, but because your fireplace flue sucks heated air out of a room and up the chimney, using your fireplace will actually cost you money on your heating bills. If you do want to enjoy a fire, invest in insulated tempered glass doors that will let you enjoy the warm glow without losing money. Keep the fireplace flue damper tightly closed when not in use, and consider installing an inflatable “chimney balloon” to keep cold air out and warm air in.

Most people think of ceiling fans solely as warm-weather essentials for cooling down hot rooms and improving air circulation. Most ceiling fans, however, feature reversible motors that can be set to push warm air down in the winter, improving the overall comfort in the room. In the winter, set your ceiling fan so that the blades turn in a “forward” or clockwise direction to push warm air trapped by the ceiling down into the room and improve overall air distribution. Save even more by choosing an Energy Star-certified ceiling fan, which is up to 50 percent more efficient than a conventional model.

They Use Power Strips You may not believe in vampires, but you probably have a few lurking in your house. A "vampire" is any electronic device that draws power from electrical outlets even when it's switched to the "off" position. You can slay a few of these vampires by plugging your home entertainment and home office equipment into a power strip. When your gadgets are switched off, turn off the power strip to stop them from sucking more energy. When shopping for a power strip, look for one that includes a surge protector to shield sensitive components from damage during storms or power outages.

They Pay for What They Use Many households sign up for so-called “budget plans” with local utility companies to spread the cost of heating bills over a 12-month period. But if you opt for budget billing, you may be giving your power company an interest-free loan, because the company is billing you for estimated rather than actual usage. If you're frugal with your energy usage, it is more cost-effective to pay as you go, so you're charged only for the energy you actually use.

As summer scurries away, cooler temps and autumn leaves aren't far behind. Move these temperature-sensitive yard chores to the top of this month's to-do list to keep your property in fine shape this year and next.

Crisp fall mornings signal the change of seasons and the end of the growing season in most areas of the country. If you live in a frost-prone area, fall is the time to tackle plenty of gardening chores before snow and frost disrupt your plans, and possibly the health of your plants. First frost date varies by growing zone, so get outside this weekend if you can and tackle these time-sensitive tasks to protect frost-sensitive plants and tools.

Some plants go dormant in the winter. Keep them in a garage or basement until the growing season begins, and they should come back in spring. Select container plants can survive outdoors, but the plant should be cold hardy to a zone or more lower than yours; containers get colder than solid ground. When in doubt, bring them in.

Clear out the summer vegetable garden. Even if your summer vegetable garden

Finish outdoor fall chores.

Before the First Frost

Things to Do in the Yard

Bring in container plants. Most container plants won't survive the colder days of fall sitting out on your porch. Bring perennials indoors, but first make sure they are free of pests and diseases so you don't endanger your houseplants. Place the perennials in or across from a window where they'll receive their proper allotment of light.

Treat weeds with an application of post-emergent herbicide, and also consider applying a pre-emergent herbicide, which will prevent other weeds from sprouting. By killing off weeds before winter sets in, you'll lay the groundwork for a healthier, less weedy lawn and garden next spring.

With the heat of summer long gone and winter still yet to come, the plant's roots will have time to become established before the ground freezes. Mulch the base of the new tree with wood chips or other organic mulch to retain moisture, and supplement fall rains with additional watering when needed. Be sure to check with local sources on timing and average first frost date before planting.

Bundle up tender plants. Certain plants such as azaleas and rhododendrons are sensitive to overnight frost and can benefit from freeze protection. Add mulch around

Get rid of weeds. When cleaning up the vegetable garden or any garden bed, pull up remaining weeds, too. Herbicides can be more effective at killing certain types of weeds in autumn than in spring, so you should take advantage of that vulnerability.

If left where they stand, dead edibles can attract garden pests that could harm your chances of a good crop next year, so clear them out. If they're not disease- or pest-ridden, go ahead and compost them; otherwise, toss them in the trash. Plant new trees and shrubs. Early fall is the best time to plant a new tree or shrub.

Fertilize your lawn. It might seem strange to feed your lawn before it goes dormant for winter, but, in fact, a fall application of fertilizer can protect your lawn over the cold months and help it look healthier come spring. Choose a nitrogen-rich fertilizer designed for fall feeding, like Jonathan Green’s Winter Survival fertilizer, and apply a thin layer evenly to the lawn a few weeks before the ground freezes. Deadhead and collect seeds. By now, many of your beloved annuals and perennials have probably gone to seed. As you deadhead and prune back dead growth, collect and store seeds from your favorite plants. Consider leaving seeds of some plants— coneflowers, for example—where they stand, since they can provide backyard birds with winter sustenance. Leaving seeds on some native flowers also helps encourage the plants to reseed nearby next spring.

Apply mulch. You can't stop the cold from coming into your garden, but you can help protect your plants from exposure by applying a generous layer of mulch. Mulch insulates the root systems of vulnerable plants, keeping them healthy and strong, and

the roots of sensitive plants to insulate them and help them retain moisture.

A well-hydrated plant is in a better position to withstand cold temperatures, so water regularly, tapering off as temperatures get cooler. If necessary, some plants can be bundled in burlap or another insulating material until they go into winter dormancy. If you’re not sure which plants in your yard are frost sensitive, check with a local nursery or master gardeners.

will survive the winter. Adding organic mulches to garden beds improves soil over time.

Cover cool-season crops at night. If you’ve planted some cool-season crops like carrots, radishes, and greens, cover them at night with an old sheet or floating row cover. It’s best to remove the cover in the daytime, so the sun can warm the ground. Then, cover the plants again at dusk. Try not to let the cover touch the plants. Use PVC pipe leftovers, stakes, or small tomato cages to hold the cover above the plants, but so it touches the ground on all sides. Or buy garden hoops for row cover, like this six-pack from AXNG.

Harvest herbs and vegetables and bring them inside. You can extend the life of your tastiest edibles, even if frost comes a little early. Harvest basil and place the stems in a mason jar or other glass filled with water to use the herb in dishes, or make a small batch of pesto to freeze. Pick green tomatoes to fry, or to continue ripening them in a sunny spot of your kitchen. You can also save (and share) your bounty with proper preserving and pressure canning.

Plant spring-blooming bulbs. Make your spring garden pop with color by planting spring-blooming bulbs in fall. The bulbs need winter cold to prepare to bloom, and they'll do their thing beneath the soil and snow layer while you stay cozy inside by the fire all winter. Just check to be sure they can handle your climate and select some daffodils, crocus, hyacinths, or stunning alliums to color your early spring. Can’t decide? Fill an empty spot in your

Drain the water lines. If you don't drain and switch off your sprinkler system, garden hoses, and outdoor faucets before freezing temperatures strike, freezing could cause permanent damage to them. Drain hoses and store them in the shed, garage, or basement until spring, and consider covering outdoor taps with foam pipe insulators or foam faucet covers for added protection.

Plan next year’s garden and landscaping. The end of the growing season can be tough for plant lovers, but fall is the perfect time to make plans for projects and plantings the next year. For one, ideas and problems still are fresh in your mind, so it’s a good time to brainstorm solutions. Second, it is much easier to haul gravel or build a fence on crisp fall days than in the heat of summer or the gardening rush of spring. Use this in-between time to prepare for the coming year by building a raised bed or laying pavers for a new patio or walkway.

landscape with this assortment from Willard & May.

Drain rain barrels. Rain collection is a smart, eco-conscious way to water all those pretty plants, especially containers. If you have a rain barrel, be sure to drain it and cover it before the first hard freeze. Depending on your climate and the location of your barrel (north side of the home or south), it can freeze and crack from water inside that freezes and melts. If possible, bring your barrel inside to a shed or garage; this also protects it from damaging sun and dry winter air. Don’t have a rain barrel? Here are some ideas for collecting and conserving free water from the clouds. Clean plant pots and containers. Planting new flowers in a terracotta pot is much more fun than cleaning one out, so get that cleaning done in fall so your containers are ready for spring planting when you are. Emptying and storing containers helps preserve them from the elements. Cleaning containers can get rid of salt deposits, which can dehydrate a new plant. Plus, emptying and disinfecting pots helps get rid of possible pathogens and critters lurking in the mix below.

SPIRALIZER SET

The global pandemic required people from all walks of life to reassess their priorities and make changes to their daily lives. One of the changes that emerged during the peak of social distancing was an increased interest in making meals at home. While the simplest of recipes can be made without much equipment, for more complicated meals, it is likely worth investing in some high- quality cooking gadgets. The following are some items home chefs will want to add to their culinary arsenal.

A spiralizer is a device that can turn raw vegetables into "noodles" that can be substituted for traditional pasta in many popular dishes. Sets will come with blades that can produce coils, ribbons or even shorter

When to stop mowing grass

• Frost: Warm-season grasses typically go dormant after a couple of significant frosts. Homeowners can jot down each frost during fall. Frosts are most noticeable in the early morning hours, so be sure to check lawn conditions each morning as the weather begins to grow cold. Frost may be noticeable without even going outside, but homeowners may need to go outside to check on chilly mornings or on days when the previous night was especially cold. If you must go outside, stay off the grass to protect it. Two or three frosts might be enough to make warm-season grasses go dormant for the winter. Cool-season grasses may keep growing and require moving even after a few frosts, so it's imperative that homeowners determine which type of grass is in their yards.

Each weekend in spring, summer and fall, millions of homeowners fire up their mowers and cut the grass in their yards. A few hours spent mowing the lawn can be a great time to get some sun and some exercise in the great outdoors.

FALL 2022 CASS & CLAY COUNTY MAGAZINE 27

• Soil temperature: If it's hard to determine if frosts have occurred, homeowners can try checking the temperature of their soil to decide if they need to keep mowing. The lawn care experts at Pennington recommend homeowners continue mowing warm-season grasses so long as they keep growing. Lawns may not grow as quickly in fall as they do in spring or summer, and growth may not be as visible to the naked eye during this time of year as it is in other times. Homeowners can routinely check soil temperature to determine if their grasses have stopped growing. Warm-season grasses tend to stop growing once the soil temperature is consistently at 55 F or below, while cool-season grasses tend to stop when temperatures are 45 F or lower.

• Falling leaves have long been a barometer used by homeowners to determine if they need to keep mowing their lawns. That's not necessarily a reliable metric, as grass can still keep growing even if leaves have been falling for weeks. In addition, using a mulching mower when leaves begin falling is a great way to provide the lawn with nutrients it can use throughout the winter. Some trees shed their leaves more quickly than others, but it's a good rule of thumb that lawns will need to keep being mowed if trees are still retaining more than half their leaves. A host of factors can help homeowners determine when it's safe to put their mowers away for the winter.

As fall gradually transitions to winter, homeowners may wonder when to stop mowing their lawns. Each lawn is different, and when to stop mowing may depend on a host of factors, including local climate and the type of turf. In addition to climate and turf, homeowners can keep an eye on these conditions to determine when the time is right to put their mowers away for the winter.

Champion Bison Gearing Up

Very soon, our community will be humming with fall activities. When I was in high school and college, it seemed classes didn’t start until after the Labor Day weekend. This year, the NDSU campus opens for the fall semester on August 22t! We won’t be finished with summer yet and we’ll have to shift gears and get ready for fall. And in our area, fall is perhaps the busiest season. We live in farm country. The harvest of multiple crops will keep farmers busy into the late evenings. Sugar beet trucks will be out on the highways (be careful, everybody). Even the scenery is busy changing colors to blazing oranges, yellows, purples, and reds. Two other colors that will be very active are green and Photo Credit Tim Sanger, NDSU Athletics

Dream Big...Move Fast! Century 21 Agents can make it happen

On September 3rd, 2022, crowds will flock to the Fargodome to watch the Herd take on the Drake University Bulldogs at 2:30 PM. The Bulldogs are an interesting team. Every year, it seems, one or more Bulldogs are drafted into the NFL. The Bulldogs don’t have a great record (2021: 2-9), but they have power and speed. The Bison will not take any opponent for granted. The NDSU Bison football team had an excellent season last year. They only lost one game during regular play, and they once again traveled to the national finals in Frisco, Texas where they brought home their ninth championship trophy in ten seasons! Head Coach Matt Entz was named AFCAFCS National Coach of the Year, his second time earning the prestigious award. His first was in 2019 when he led the Bison to a 16-0 season and their eighth championship trophy his first year as Head Coach of the Bison.

Fullback Logan Hofstedt, linebacker Jasir Cox and free safety Dawson Weber. Tight end Noah Gindorff was named fourth team. At this time of this writing, North Dakota State ranks No. 1 in the FCS preseason top 25 rankings. The Bison collected 52 of the 54 first-place votes. With 13 returning starters, it stands to reason the Bison would rank No.1.

The Bison will enter this season as a formidable team hungry to keep a title they earned nine times already. They are stacked with talent, experience, leadership, and community support.

Fans are ready to be the “12th man” once again and help this team through another winning year. GO BISON!

BEMER THERAPY BRIEFLY EXPLAINED BEMER is designed to improve circulation thereby supporting the body's natural self-regulating processes. Blood is the body's universal means of transportation.

Oxygen, nutrients, chemical messengers (e.g. hormones) and immune cells are all transported through our blood. When our body's cells, tissues and organs are adequately nourished and metabolic waste products are removed, our bodies maintain a healthy balance and function properly. The optimal regulation of circulation is a prerequisite for ensuring good levels of health and fitness.

The uniqueness of BEMER lies in its signal and its configuration. The signal leads to scientifically grounded stimulation of the smallest vessels supporting the circulatory system as a whole. No other biophysical

The Bison are also building for the future with plenty of new athletes. As you can see, the Midwest has raised many great players who are coming to NDSU. A good number of these young players earned awards during their high school careers. Hopefully, that award winning trend will continue with the Bison. Retaining these new young men for the duration of their college careers will no doubt benefit the players and the squad.

BEMER is not a disease-specific application. Its effect on the circulation and the resulting improvements to the supply and removal of substances to/from the body's cells allows these cells to produce and supply increasing amounts of energy, and therefore carry out their tasks (production) in a more functional manner.

modality in the world targets it the way the BEMER does. The perception of the BEMER application differs from user to user. Some users experience a light feeling of warmth or a tingling sensation. Most feel noticeably relaxed and invigorated after the application. Some have no awareness of the application.

BEMER Therapy is recommended as a long-term application. The positive effects of BEMER Therapy may last for an extended period of time. However, the results vary based on the individual user and depend fundamentally on the individual lifestyle and state of health of the user. The average user can expect a single application to last (8-12 hours).

As a business owner, you have a LOT to think about.

BEMER has been used by many doctors and healthcare providers worldwide and is a therapeutic modality used in conventional medicine as a complementary or adjunct therapeutic application. It is currently accepted by specialist medical bodies, is a key topic in medical working groups, and is a current object of research in a number of universities.

BEMER is safe and effective stand-alone or complementary/adjunctive therapy. The effects of BEMER are scientifically proven. The BEMER is FDA Class II medical device that can be used in a clinical environment and/or in over-the-counter (OTC) home care. They are equally suited for both medical professionals and for home use by the user.

Scientific findings confirm that correctly functioning circulation is of crucial importance in ensuring a person's well-being and physical performance. In all advanced organisms, blood circulation regulates the nourishment of cells with oxygen and nutrients, the removal of waste products and many other processes.

Landscapes are vulnerable to the elements during the cold weather months. Everything from de-icing products to hungry animals to the weight of snow can affect trees, shrubs and other Justplants.because certain greenery will go dormant during the winter doesn't mean landscape maintenance ends when the mercury dips. Homeowners can take certain actions to winterproof their properties and safeguard landscapes so they recover more readily when spring arrives.

UTILIZE BARRIERS AND DETERRENTS

When resources are scarce, animals will be on the hunt for anything that's edible, and that includes whatever greenery is growing on a landscape. Physical barriers in garden beds and around trees can help prevent damage caused by moles, voles and deer. Line the bottom and sides of garden beds with garden cloth to prevent ground-burrowing animals from getting in from beneath, suggests the gardening resource I Must Garden. Wrapping shrubs in burlap or covering them in temporary netting can deter deer, who will seek accessible food sources over the winter. ERECT A SNOW BARRIER

SECURE SAPLINGS AND JUVENILE PLANTS

Prior observation tends to educate homeowners about which areas of the landscape are most vulnerable to snow drifts and blustery winds. During the winter, winds often blow in from a northeasterly direction, but each homeowner can make his or her own assessment. Put up a tarp between two stakes to serve as a "snow fence" that protects vulnerable areas of the landscape from blowing snow.

Harsh winds and battering snow can damage young plants. Use stakes and lattices to secure them so they'll be better able to withstand the weather, suggests Total Landscape Management, a commercial and residential landscaping company. Promptly remove snow from branches to help trees and shrubs; otherwise, the weight of ice and snow can break off branches and cause irreparable damage.

Investigate options in snowmelt products, as traditional rock salt can injure buds and branches and kill lawns. In addition, avoid piling salted snow in one area of the landscape, as it will concentrate the salt in that spot. Spread out snow piles to help minimize the damage to delicate plants.

In just few weeks, students will be heading off to college – and parents will be getting out Without a college-bound student in your home right now, you might not be thinking much about tuition and other higher education expenses, but if you have young children, these costs may eventually be of concern – so how should you prepare for them?

It’s never too soon to start saving and investing. Unfortunately, many people think that they have a lot of “catching up” to do. In fact, nearly half of Americans say they don’t feel like they’re saving enough to cover future education expenses, according to a 2022 survey conducted by financial services firm Edward Jones with Morning Consult, a global research company.

Of course, it’s not always easy to set aside money for college when you’re already dealing with the high cost of living, and, at the same time, trying to save and invest for retirement. Still, even if you can only devote relatively modest amounts for your children’s education, these contributions can add up over time. But where should you put your money?

a

Personal savings accounts are the top vehicle Americans are using for their education funding strategies, according to the Edward Jones/Morning Consult survey. But there are other options, one of which is a 529 plan, which may offer more attractive features, including the following:

their checkbooks.

Support for non-college programs – Even if your children don’t want to go to college, it doesn’t mean they’re uninterested in any type of postsecondary education or training.

Flexibility in naming the beneficiary – As the owner of the 529 plan, you can name anyone you want as the beneficiary. You can also change the beneficiary. If your eldest child foregoes college, you can name a younger sibling or another eligible relative.

Despite these and other benefits, 529 plans are greatly under-utilized. Only about 40% of Americans even recognize the 529 plan as an education savings tool, and only 13% are actually using it, again according to the Edward Jones/Morning Consult study.

Payment of student loans – A 529 plan can help pay off federal or private student loans, within limits.

But as the cost of college and other postsecondary programs continues to rise, it will become even more important for parents to find effective ways to save for their children’s future education expenses. So, consider how a 529 plan can help you and your family. And the sooner you get started, the better.

Possible tax benefits – If you invest in a 529 education savings plan, your earnings can grow federally income tax-free, provided the money is used for qualified education expenses. (Withdrawals not used for these expenses will generally incur taxes and penalties on investment earnings.) If you invest in your own state’s 529 plan, you may receive state tax benefits, too, depending on the state.

Keep in mind that state-by-state tax treatment varies for different uses of 529 plans, so you’ll want to consult with your tax professional before putting a plan in place.

And a 529 plan can pay for qualified expenses at trade or vocational schools, including apprenticeship programs registered with the U.S. Department of Labor.

Vehicles are machines, and like any machine they need maintenance. For most vehicles, regular maintenance begins at 5,000 miles and continues from there every 5,000-10,000 miles. Of course, checking your car on a more regular basis is even better. Maintenance keeps your vehicle running smoothly and safely down the road for a much longer distance compared to never doing upkeep. Your owner’s manual will outline all of the maintenance that needs to be done and when it needs to be done so that you’re Butprepared.doyou need to pay for a mechanic to handle the vehicle maintenance? You can handle a lot of basic vehicle maintenance yourself by following the advice below.

With manual in hand, head to the maintenance schedule section. Take note of the intervals for maintenance items like the engine oil, oil filter, tire rotation, belts, hoses and so on. It’s important to follow these manufacturer recommendations to keep the engine running as smoothly as possible.

9 Vehicle Maintenance Measures You Can DIY: You need a mechanic for most repairs, but there’s a lot of vehicle maintenance you can do on your own. Here’s a rundown that will get you started.

1. ACQUAINT YOURSELF WITH YOUR OWNER’S MANUAL Every vehicle has an owner’s manual. It’s a thick book typically squirreled away in the glove box. If you can’t find your copy, an electronic version could be online. Otherwise, contact your dealer for a copy.

48 CASS & CLAY COUNTY MAGAZINE FALL 2022 Routine Vehicle Maintenance 101: What You Should Know Courtesy of idrivesafely.com

2. CHECK YOUR TIRES MONTHLY A LOT IS RIDING ON YOUR TIRES - LIKE THE ENTIRE VEHICLE. The thing that keeps your car driving down the road is the tires. They need to be properly inflated to do their job as well as lessen the chance of a blowout. You probably know how to add air to your tires already. What you may not know is the correct tire pressure, which is extremely important. You’ll find the ideal tire pressure on a placard located on the driver’s door jamb or in the owner’s manual.

3. CHANGE YOUR OIL AND OIL FILTER ON SCHEDULE Oil is your engine’s life blood. It serves as a lubricant, keeping important engine parts from grinding against each other and destroying the engine. Motor oil that’s not changed regularly can damage your engine as accumulated contaminants cause friction when they rub against parts. What type of oil should you use — petroleum-based or synthetic? Is one better than the other? According to Edmunds.com Engineering Editor Jason Kavanagh, the type of oil is not important. He noted, “As long as the oil meets the service and viscosity requirements set out in your owner's manual, you can switch back and forth as much as you want.”

4. REPLACE THE AIR FILTER WITH OIL CHANGES When it comes to the air filter, you may need to replace it once or twice each year. It largely depends on how much you drive. It’s best practice to check the air filter when you change your oil.

5. INSPECT ALL OTHER FLUIDS

Motor oil isn’t the only fluid that needs to be checked. Experts recommend checking your car brake fluid, transmission fluids, coolant and windshield washer fluid. Like motor oil, you’ll check transmission fluid with a dipstick. Determine brake fluid, coolant and washer fluid levels by removing related covers and visually inspecting each.

Tires should be inflated when they are cold (driven less than one mile) to get an accurate reading. If that isn’t possible, add 4 PSI to the recommended amount, explains Bridgestone Tire. Check your spare tire while you’re at it and confirm all pressures with a tire gauge once the tires have rested.

Similarly, check the belts too. The timing belt, as found in most cars and small SUVs, is critical to the operation of your engine, notes YourMechanic. If this belt shows signs of wear, including cracking, glazing and material loss (chunks missing from the belt itself), then replace it ASAP. If the timing belt goes while driving it can cause serious engine damage.

They should reach a designated fill line. NEVER remove the radiator cap to check coolant levels. You risk getting scalded if the cap is removed. Instead, check the coolant level in the nearby transparent refill container, says CarTalk.

Brakes are a critical component on every vehicle. You should always be aware of how your brakes feel and what they sound like every time you drive. If the brakes feel spongy or it takes more pressure to apply the brakes than normal they need to get inspected by a professional.

If you want to go one step beyond basic routine vehicle maintenance, then inspect the hoses and belts in the engine bay. These hoses direct coolant flow to ensure the engine doesn’t overheat. If a hose has separated, shows cracks or bulges, then have it replaced.

Brake sounds can indicate when maintenance or repair is needed. Here’s a quick rundown of common brake sounds: • Squealing - It’s time for new brake pads when you hear squealing because the ones you have now are worn out and rubbing against the rotor.

6. EXAMINE BELTS AND HOSES

7. ALWAYS LISTEN AND FEEL FOR BRAKE ISSUES

• Intermittent Sounds - If brake sounds come and go it could be an indicator of brake fade from overheating. When the brake pads, rotors or brake fluid overheat you may hear brake sounds and the brakes won’t feel as responsive. This problem should be looked at by a professional who can pinpoint the cause and fix it.

9. REMOVE BATTERY CORROSION As for the car battery, the main requirement here is to ensure that the battery terminals remain free from corrosion. Just like the brakes, environmental factors can cause buildup that hinders operation. A wire brush along with a solution of water and baking soda will knock the corrosion right off. Now that you know vehicle maintenance 101 you’re on your way to ensuring your car keeps safely cruising down the road for miles.

• Grinding - This isn’t a normal sound, but it may not be a major issue if brake grinding is happening only the first time you drive the vehicle in a day. When the humidity levels are high outside, rust can form on the brake rotors in a matter of a day if the vehicle isn’t driven. The grinding sound is the rust getting knocked off. The simple fix is to park the vehicle in a garage when it’s snowing, raining or humid.

8. REPLACE WIPER BLADES as Needed If the windows streak or the blades screech when the system is operating it’s time for a replacement set. This is actually a very important vehicle maintenance measure. If you find yourself in a rainstorm the windshield wipers are what give you visibility. You never know when you may need them so check the wiper blades often.

When it comes to food, it doesn’t get much better than homemade… maybe one thing: using healthier ingredients. While many people want to do so, the thought of where to start can be quite intimidating. The key here is to not be too hard on yourself, and keep doing your best until it becomes second nature. Just remember that not every single meal can be perfectly healthy, but we can make changes that result in our favorite foods being healthier. This is what keeps making better food choices easier as time goes So, what’s in it for us to cook healthier meals? For starters –our heart, brain, gut and all organs will be in a more optimized state. When we feed our bodies ingredients from good-for-you sources, we begin to function better. Aches and pains all of the sudden disappear, we sleep better, we have less brain fog. We can see a difference in our body composition and even how much happier we feel on the inside, and appear on the outside.

So, what are the best alternatives to “non-sugar” sugars?

54 CASS & CLAY COUNTY MAGAZINE FALL 2022

Monk fruit, stevia and coconut sugar are great replacements. Monk fruit can replace sugar 1:1, and coconut sugar is a great alternative to brown sugar, also at the same ratio. Coconut sugar is the best sweetener option for diabetics because it has a very

With such a large variety of options at the grocery store, it can seem difficult to choose better options. This is especially true these days when marketing teams for food companies are so good at their jobs – adding buzzwords all over packaging, like “heart healthy… keto.. zero sugar… natural”. For starters, if something is bragging “zero sugar” or “diet”, then you will want to ask yourself what kind of chemically processed substance is in that item? Check the label and you’ll find that usually it’s Aspartame. This questionable ingredient is cited in many studies as linked to neurological problems such as headaches, anxiety, insomnia, depression, learning disabilities and even seizures, not to mention kidney disease, blood sugar issues and obesity diseases. If there was more public knowledge of all this, perhaps more people would decide against diet and low sugar products.

Another exciting side effect from using better ingredients is that symptoms of diseases and health conditions can subside, making it that much easier for us to live our day-to-

There’s no debate that trans fats are extremely harmful to our health. Highly refined, polyunsaturated vegetable oils like peanut, canola, corn and soy oil should be avoided. These fats are linked to oxidative stress and cellular damage, which are both contributors to heart disease. Trans fats and vegetable oils also promote oxidized cholesterol, which is destructive to our arteries. Unfortunately, consuming these fats and oils damages and slows down our metabolism.

Let’s talk about the stigma of fats. For years, fat (specifically saturated fats) and cholesterol have been put in the bad spotlight by certain organizations as leading causes of heart disease and increased weight. The British Medical Journal has published several reports that found no association between high levels of saturated fat and heart disease, stroke or even type 2 diabetes. It is critical, however, to avoid the unhealthy varieties of fat, such as trans fats or unsaturated fats, which can be mostly accomplished by eliminating processed and fast foods.

An easy transition in your own kitchen would be to start using extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil or avocado oil for cooking and baking. A nice trick for baking anything that 3804 Hwy 75 North Moorhead, MN www.bertsmobility.com800.232.3787218.233.868156560Monday-Friday7:30A-5:30P

Some other healthier options I like to keep on hand are grass-fed beef, bison, pastured pork, pastured chicken, pastured eggs, raw nuts (almonds, walnuts, etc.), wild-caught fish, seeds (flax and chia), olives, coconut and avocado.

calls for oil is to use unsweetened apple sauce in the same amount as what they are calling for in the oil. You will not even notice a difference! For cooking, try substituting plain yogurt for sour cream, using the same 1/1 ratio. Some great, healthy fats to keep on hand for cooking are: Grass-fed butter, raw, grass-fed milk and cheese, extra virgin olive oil, and coconut oil,

• Have washed and prepped fruits and veggies ready to enjoy with your favorite dips.

• Keep jerkies and nuts on hand for quick snacking.

Having a guilty pleasure snack every now and then won’t make or break it, but be careful because a few steps back into old habits can lead to a pretty slippery slope.

There’s no better time than now to start transitioning your ingredients and food choices to better options. The sooner you do this, the sooner you’ll start to feel the benefits. You will notice some changes within days, but I’ve noted other positive changes can take weeks to months. The best thing you can do for yourself is not give up. You got this!

A few last tips to start practicing healthier habits:

Getting Your Affairs in Order

58 CASS & CLAY COUNTY MAGAZINE FALL 2022

3. Living Will: Allows one to put in writing exactly what you want done in the event you cannot speak for yourself when it comes to healthcare decisions.

For those of you that don’t have your affairs in order, here’s a list that can help:

1. Make sure all bank accounts have direct beneficiaries. The beneficiary will only need to go to the bank with your death certificate and their ID.

4. Durable Power of Attorney: Allows one to designate a person to make legal decisions if one is no longer competent to do so. AND Power of Attorney for Healthcare: This document allows one to designate someone to make healthcare decisions for their person.

2. TOD = Transfer On Death deed if you own a home. Completing this document and filing it with your county saves your heirs THOUSANDS!!! This document allows you to transfer ownership of your home to your designee. All they need to do is take your death certificate and their ID to the county building and have the deed signed over. Doing this will avoid the home having to go through probate.

FALL 2022 CASS & CLAY COUNTY MAGAZINE 59 5. Last Will & Testament: Designates to whom personal belongings will go to. Make sure it is hand written and signed. Or printed, notarized and signed to be valid. 6. Funeral Planning Declaration: allows one to say exactly one’s wishes as far as disposition of the body and services. 7. If the above documents are done, you can AVOID probate. If all the above is not done, you have to open an estate account at the bank. All money that doesn’t have direct beneficiaries goes into this account. You have to have an attorney to open the estate account. The attorney also has to publicize your passing in the newspaper or post publication at the county courthouse, to allow anyone to make a claim on your property. - It’s a long arduous process that can cost $2,500 and more in legal fees. 8. Make a list of all banks and account numbers, all investment institutions with account numbers, lists of credit cards, utility accounts, etc. Leave clear instructions as to how and when these things are paid. 9. Make sure heirs know where life insurance policies are located. 10. Make 100% sure SOMEONE knows your Apple ID, bank ID account logins and passwords! 11. Make sure you have titles for all vehicles, campers, etc! 12. MOST IMPORTANTLY!!!! - Talk with those closest to you and make all your wishes KNOWN. Talk to those whom you’ve designated, as well as those close to you

***Also, an attorney can help you set up a "Living Trust,” which will save your loved ones from having to go through probate, which is a long and costly process that can also take away a substantial amount from your heirs inheritance. now for 2022-2023 Year 7:00AM - 6:00PM K-6,

FALL 2022 CASS & CLAY COUNTY MAGAZINE 61 whom you did not designate. Don’t avoid these important conversations with your loved ones! This will also help explain why your decisions were made and avoid any lingering questions or potentially hurt feelings. - It has to be done!

13. Make an appointment with a qualified Estate Attorney licensed to practice law in your state (these laws, and the requirements to make these documents valid, differ from state to state. There’s a reason attorneys go to law school for years and then have to pass a multi-day written examination, to be licensed to practice law - it’s complex. Minor omissions or errors can have significant legal implications. If you don’t do a will correctly, it can quickly be completely invalidated. Don’t leave these things to a Google search or some cheap form you pick up at an office store. Do this right! It’s important.
