ABOUT ME Hello My name is Crystal Carbajal Castillo, and I am 25 years old. I am a third year transfer student Landscape Architecture major with a minor in Regenerative Studies at Cal Poly Pomona. I also work as the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) Multimedia Assistant leader on campus.

I am passionate about sustainability since elementary school, which is the reason of my interest in Landscape Architecture. I love being out-doors, walking, going to open mics, traveling, reading (I’m currently read-ing The Preacher by Camilla Lackberg). I also like indoor climbing, although I’m not very good at it, but I enjoy it. In short, I like to explore and go on adventures.

Site A Library is designed along University Dr and following the shape of it. It has two main entrances. One is from University Dr accessing to the second floor and the other is through the plaza and accessing to the first floor. Access from different levels was an inspiration taken from the Seattle Central Library. The connection between the plaza and University Dr. is through a ramp that is next to the library. There are multiple entrances on the first floor. The visitor has the option to access to the gallery, archive, meeting room, or lecture space with the purpose to have a flexible circulation according to the needs of the viewer. On the second floor, the most public spaces are located including the library and loading duck.

On the third floor, there is the lounge area and the library. The lounge was specifically located on the third floor so that they have the most compelling views from the plaza. Regarding to organization, the service spaces are to the right, next to loading duck of building 7, thus the mechanical spaces from the library are located in the second floor next to Building 7. The façade is made of brick and glass. The brick and the square openings were used as a continuation of the plaza design. Lastly, the use of color in the interior was the result of the inspiration by the Mexican architect Luis Barragan works.

VISION The purpose of our design is to promote stewardship and eco-literacy through the use of various sensory gardens. Our produce, therapeutic, and medicinal gardens can promote engagement and a sense of ownership in the community as well.

GOALS: offer a space of serenity and psychological comfort, encourage physical movement and promote eco-literacy in the community surrounding the park.

The objective of the garden is to provide a space of tranquility and calm to the population around the park; an escape from noise, pollution and the overwhelming industrial area that surrounds the park. To do so, the garden features pleasing sound, fragrance, and visuals, as well as a quiet, secluded space for the community to unwind and meditate. As part of the design, scented yellow, white, purple, pink and green plants were used to create a sense of peace and serenity. In addition, the garden seeks to promote eco-literacy in the local population on how the sound of water, the smell and the color of plants help to reduce anxiety, sadness and other negative moods with the help of signage throughout the garden. The open space seeks to motivate people to move, exercise and connect as part of therapy and relaxation. In general, the fragrance and color of the plants, the sculptures, the winding path that simulates a meandering river with pleasant sounds emanating from the water source, the rustling of the leaves of the trees and the secluded spaces placed near this path give the community an opportunity to connect, meditate and improve mental and physical well-being.
