executive director’s welcome Welcome to the Capitol Center for the Arts and thank you for joining us for our 21st Season, which is packed with rich and

diverse programming! You may have chosen a rock concert, an evening of comedy, a Broadway musical, or a broadcast.

But whatever brought you to the theater today, we want you to have a wonderful experience. With the support of individual donors, the Capitol Center has recently invested in new systems and equipment focused on improving our customers’ experience. Our web site has been redesigned to be more mobile device friendly (including a “select your own seats” feature with tickets delivered right to your phone!) In addition, you’ll find that our lobby bar lines will move more quickly, thanks to the addition of our new “Bottoms Up” beer tap system.

I hope you will have the chance to attend a performance in each of our wonderful spaces this season. With our rich suite of Chubb Theatre (“Mainstage”) presentations, we continue to build on our commitment to present gifted artists in a beautiful, historic setting. You may be cheering on your feet for your favorite rock band or relaxing in your seats to the smooth sounds of the Capital Jazz Orchestra. An evening sitting with friends listening to exciting singer-songwriters such as Lucy Wainwright Roche and Leyla McCalla in our intimate Spotlight Café is a great way to step away from the everyday. Engaging in a presentation and dialogue with a vibrant filmmaker, painter, composer, or writer in our Kimball House Salon Series is a unique opportunity to gain a new perspective on artists and their art as well as relevant issues of the day.

our history and venues The CCA first opened in 1927 as the Capitol Theatre, a prime stop on the Vaudeville circuit; it later became Concord’s premier movie house and concert hall. After closing in 1989, it underwent a multi-million dollar renovation / modernization and reopened in 1995 as the Capitol Center for the Arts.

Today, the Capitol Center is home to the 1304-seat Chubb Theatre, the Spotlight Café, the elegant Governor’s Hall ballroom, and the historic Kimball House mansion.

patron services We want your experience here to be memorable. For your convenience: A house manager is on duty for each performance and is responsible for the overall onsite patron experience. Ushers can assist you with seating, programs, safety, and comfort.

Parking is available nearby at the Capital

Commons garage (entrance on Storrs St.) and an outdoor lot one block north of the CCA on S State St. On-street parking is free after 5 p.m.

Handicap-accessible spaces with curb cuts are located in front of the theater. Please be considerate to our neighbors and do not park in posted lots or in front of driveways: your car may be towed.

Restrooms are located in the main lobby and balcony lobby. Vending machines and an ATM are located in the vestibule.

Special seating accommodations

in consideration of others Please help us create exquisite experiences for others too: LATE ARRIVALS If you arrive after the show begins, you will not be seated until a suitable break, and then at the discretion of the house manager and artists. No refunds will be given as a result of late arrivals.

CHILDREN As a courtesy to audience members and performers, please use discretion regarding young children’s ability to sit quietly and enjoy a performance. Tickets are required for all patrons, including babes in arms.

SMOKING Smoking is not allowed anywhere inside the Capitol Center for the Arts. There are ashtrays outside the front entrance.

CAMERAS AND RECORDING DEVICES Non-professional, non-flash, still photography is permitted unless posted or stated otherwise.

Professional cameras and video recording of any kind is prohibited without prior written permission from the performers and the CCA. BEEPING AND RINGING ITEMS Audible cell phones, watches, and other electronic devices must be turned off during the show to avoid distracting performers and other audience members. If you must make or accept a call during the performance, please do so in our lobby or vestibule.

frequently asked questions BOX OFFICE/TICKET SALES When is your box office open?

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 11am6pm. Between Labor Day and Memorial Day, it is also open on Saturdays from 11am - 2pm. It opens one hour before each show for ticket sales exclusively to that performance and closes one half-hour after the show begins.

Can I return my tickets?

All sales are final and we do not offer refunds.

One of the benefits of CCA membership is ticket insurance. (See “What if I’m a member and can’t use my tickets?”)

What happens if the show is cancelled?

We will make every effort to notify you beforehand. If you purchased your tickets by credit card, your account will be credited. If you purchased your tickets with cash or a check, you will be mailed a check.

What if I can’t attend because of the weather?

If the show goes on as scheduled, we are contractually obligated to pay the performers. Therefore, we do not offer weather-related refunds.

Why is there a processing fee?

A processing fee applies for each ticket purchased online or by phone to offset costs of our ticketing system which allows patrons to choose their own seats when ordering by phone or online. There is no fee for tickets purchased at our Box Office.

Does my infant need a ticket if she is going to sit in my lap during a performance?

Yes. Each and every person attending a performance must have a ticket, including babes in arms, unless otherwise stated. This allows us to keep track of the number of people at a particular event in case of emergency.

When I received my tickets they were seats 14, 16, and 18. Are these seats together?

Yes. Seats on the right side of the theatre are even-numbered and those on the left side are odd-numbered. Seats in the center are numbered consecutively. This system helps our ushers direct you to your seats quickly and efficiently.

What can I do with my unused tickets if I am not a member?

For sold-out shows, we will attempt to resell unused tickets. If we can resell the tickets, a refund will be issued. All service fees are nonrefundable.

Can I buy tickets for another performance while I’m at the theater to see a show?

No. At performance time, our box office is staffed to quickly and efficiently serve patrons attending that particular show. We cannot sell tickets to other shows during this time.

What if I’m a member and can’t use my tickets?

Tickets for free performances are generally available online, by phone, and in person at the Box Office. Tickets are available approximately one month prior to the performance date.

Where are the closest restaurants?

There are many fine restaurants within walking distance of the Capitol Center. Many support us through our Restaurant Sponsor program and we encourage you to patronize them. See the Dining Guide in the back of this Playbill for details.

PROGRAMMING AND MARKETING Where can I find a complete and up-todate list of upcoming shows?

In the display rack to the left of our box office and on our web site. Join our E-Mail Club and have show information sent to you on a regular basis!

Who decides which shows will be booked?

Most shows are booked by our Programming Department. However, others are presented by outside promoters who rent our theatre.

Do you take artist suggestions?

Absolutely! E-mail them to friends@ccanh.com.

At what time does the lobby open for a show? At what time is seating?

For Chubb Theatre (“mainstage”) performances, it opens one hour before - and seating begins 30 minutes before - performance time. Spotlight Café seating usually begins one hour prior to the performance. For Gile Concert Series events, seating begins 45 minutes prior to the show.

Why is the sound so loud / soft?

Our state-of-the-art sound system is calibrated to provide appropriate sound levels to all areas of the theater. Also, performing artists and their staff often have very specific requirements about how their shows should sound. We work closely with our shows to ensure that sound levels are appropriate. However, from time to time, some patrons may find the levels either too loud or too soft for their personal taste. We have free personal earplugs available. We also have a listening enhancement system provided for your use at no charge.

Can I bring food or drinks into the theatre?

Yes, wrapped food and drinks from our concessions booth are allowed inside. However, outside food and drink are not permitted.

Why is it so hot / cold inside the theatre?

Regulating the temperature of a building filled with as many as 1,300 people is tricky, since all those bodies raise the air temperature by several degrees. If you find it cool when you enter the building, you can expect the temperature to rise as the theatre fills. Please notify an usher if you believe the building is too warm or too cool.

frequently asked questions I’m sitting behind a large wheelchair and can’t see. Can I switch seats?

We recognize that some motorized wheelchairs may block the view of patrons sitting in the next row. Please see an usher. for assistance.

Do I have to wait in the lobby or the back of the theatre if I’m late for a show or event?

Each show has its own policy for late seating to ensure the best possible performance for all patrons and we are contractually obligated to oblige with these policies. The House Manager, ushers, and CCA staff are following the artists’ instructions.

Where do I put my coat?

We do not have a coat check and cannot assume responsibility for any unattended items. Please do not drape coats over the balcony walls.

Where is your lost and found?

In our box office.

MEMBERSHIP/DONOR RELATIONS (see also member/sponsor information at the back of this playbill) Why do you ask for money beyond ticket costs?

Ticket revenue covers only about 70 percent of our expenses, so we rely heavily on donations from individuals and corporations. We are a non-profit organization and must continually raise money to support our mission to bring high-quality performances and educational opportunities to the Concord area community.

Why do members get better seats?

We are grateful to the many members who support us each year. Their investment and belief in our role as a vital community resource is critical to our ongoing financial viability. We thank them by providing them with the best seats in the house.

Why is there a range of membership levels?

We created a range to allow donors at all income levels to contribute meaningfully to the CCA. What is the Ovation Society?

The premier group of individuals who support the ongoing work of the Capitol Center. Minimum entry is $1,000 per year for five years. Members enjoy exclusive privileges and receive special recognition. For more information, see p. 62.

How do I become an usher?

Sign up online at ccanh.com, call (603) 225-1111, ext. 115, fill out the card at the box office, or ask an usher or House Manager at any performance.

ABOUT THE FACILITY What are those funny painted squares on the wall?

Pieces of the original stenciling from 1927, when the theater was built. Plaques near each exposed section of stenciling explain their origins.

What is the history of this building?

The Capitol Theatre, as it was then known, opened January 30, 1927 as a vaudeville and movie house.

The theater was purchased by the non-profit Capitol Center for the Arts in the early 1990s. It was renovated in 1995 and again in 2003.

The CCA hosts weddings, business conferences, benefits, holiday parties, reunions, trade shows, and other private events. For rental information, call (603) 225-1111, ext. 114.

What /where is the Spotlight Café?

A venue offering audiences the chance to experience up-and-coming artists as well as regional and local performers in an intimate setting. Spotlight Café performances take place in the Governor’s Hall, our first-floor ballroom, with general admission table and row seating for up to 250.

What is The Kimball House? Is it part of the Kimball Jenkins Estate?

The Kimball House is a stately 19th-century Victorian mansion that serves as administrative office space for the Capitol Center and has hosted intimate dinner parties, business retreats and meetings. It is not part of the Kimball Jenkins Estate.

Do you do tours? Can I see the theatre?

In a theatrical tradition as old as Shakespeare, the ghostlight, a single lamp, stays lit up on the stage each night long after the audience has left, the sets have been struck, and the house lights have gone dark. At the Capitol Center for the Arts, the ghostlight, that one shining bulb that always lights the stage, is the inspiration for the Ghostlight Society, a group of committed young professionals who keep the CCA lights shining brightly through their support. Ghostlight Society members enjoy perks ranging from early access to ticket sales to invitations to special events and the opportunity to be a part of a community of like-minded arts patrons.
