ETHOS ON THEMATIC CONTENT

The depiction of sinful acts in storytelling is not an endorsement of sin. The Bible contains acts of violence, murder, indiscretions, and a host of other examples of the sinful nature of humanity in a fallen world. But the Bible does not explore those topics and leave one bereft of hope. Much like one cannot paint a picture without the use of shadow, one cannot tell a truthful story about human experience without depicting certain realities of human existence. We need a savior precisely because we are sinful creatures. To sanitize that truth would be a disservice to the beauty of the sacrificial love that Christ exhibited on the cross when He died for our sins. For this reason, we do not shy away from thematically challenging content, but through intentional prayerful discernment and reading of the word of God we do establish guidelines for the telling of stories of redemption. In that spirit, we offer content guides so families and individuals can make informed decisions about their viewing experience and biblical context so viewers can be drawn to understand the content considering God’s eternal character, humanity’s mortal condition, and how they interact in God’s cosmic story.

CONTENT GUIDE

This production is rated T for Teen. Content contains mature themes more appropriate for teenagers and above. Characters struggle with the nature of life and dealing with love and loss. One character is known to drink excessively.

RUN TIME

The production is approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes. Act I is 1 hour and 15 minutes. Act II is 1 hour. There will be one 15-minute intermission between the acts.

GREAT COMMISSION CONTEXT

You might walk into The Book of Will and ask yourself, “What is a play that takes place primarily in a taphouse doing on a Baptist stage?” That is a fair question. But when you look beyond the historical setting of a story based on true events, I hope you will discover, just as we have, that the drama of this tale is a perfect reflection of many kingdom truths.

In The Book of Will, the main characters are striving to preserve the works of their late friend, William Shakespeare. In our current information era, it is easy to take for granted our access to the written word. As a Theatre Arts professor, I can answer anywhere from 60 to 150 emails daily, and I do so all from the comfort of my desk. In 1619, printing a written work was an extremely timeconsuming and costly endeavor. Making matters even more challenging, a single play of Shakespeare’s often was not collected in one manuscript. Rather, each actor would have only their lines and their cues, not the entirety of the play. All these factors made the notion of collecting Shakespeare’s work a daunting task. Indeed, we would not have the First Folio were it not for the painstaking efforts of the company members of the King’s Men.

Much in the same way, as disciples of Christ, we are tasked with preserving and sharing His teachings. The efforts of Condell and Heminges to gather and publish Shakespeare’s work reflect the Christian call to preserve and spread the teachings of Christ to others. This underscores the importance of stewardship. As believers, we are entrusted with the message of the good news and numerous other blessings from God. These blessings are not intended to be used for our own benefit alone. We must care for what has been entrusted to us to share those blessings with others. Similarly, Condell and Heminges were protectors of Shakespeare’s work, passing it down to future generations with reverence

Theatre itself is a collaborative art, and that is reflected in the family members and friends who are a part of Shakespeare’s company, the King’s Men. In our production, this group serves as a representation of the body of Christ. Their efforts to secure his work for posterity reflect the very nature of The Church. As individuals, we may seem like disparate pieces of a text strewn across the earth, each with our own history and perspective. It can be difficult to see how such seemingly particular pieces could ever come together to accomplish anything. It takes intentional work to overcome our differences. But we do not give up simply because the task is challenging. Rather, we bring who God made us to be into the equation. When all of these different figures join one another, we can find unity in our main purpose – first, to love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind; and second, to love your neighbor as yourself. At the end of the day, the concept is simple. But the task of carrying it out? That is a work worthy of our time, energy, and resources. That is, “a legacy worth a life.”

DIRECTOR’S NOTE

Lauren Gunderson’s The Book of Will is a poignant meditation on the value of legacy, collaboration, and the preservation of culture. Set after Shakespeare’s death, it loosely tells the story of his closest friends who took the painstaking work to secure the rights to publish his plays, making sure that his rich legacy would not fade into obscurity. Through that story, we explore themes such as the unreliability of memory, the nature of authorship, and the role of art and storytelling in influencing society’s understanding of itself.

This thematic exploration had a direct influence on the visual style of the production. For inspiration, I looked to the theatrical movement of Constructivism. This means that the set features modular elements, geometric shapes, and adjustable structures, which allude to the notion of building and assembling a legacy. The set is not intended to be an authentic representation of Shakespearean England but instead focuses on creating an environment that invites the audience to interact with the material, emphasizing the themes of collaboration in the creation of art and the construction of meaning. As the set is continually changed and transformed not by stagehands but rather by the characters themselves, it symbolizes the effort required to piece together Shakespeare’s works, much like a puzzle, with each person contributing to the final product. The shifting set pieces reflect the continuously evolving journey of preserving art, underscoring the fluid and ever-changing nature of memory and interpretation. Similarly, costumes will reflect the period but will also be slightly abstracted to create a sense of timelessness in the struggle for creative ownership. Elements of Elizabethan attire mixed with bolder contemporary colors and patterns symbolize how the past continually informs the present, just as Shakespeare’s work endures through the ages, his influence with us to this day.

In telling the story of The Book of Will, we are not only preserving a piece of history but reflecting on the ongoing struggle to protect the cultural treasures that define our shared human experience. I hope that the production serves as a reminder of how, through collaboration, we can create a legacy that transcends time and place, building a bridge between the past and the future.

May God richly bless you and your loved ones, Zachary Bortot, Director, Producer
