Thank you for joining us for tonight’s performance of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) [REVISED] (again) a whirlwind of wordplay, wit, and wackiness! This irreverent, high-energy comedy condenses (and sometimes contorts) all 39 plays attributed to the Bard into a single, fast-paced evening of theatre. As our actors race through tragedies, comedies, histories, and everything in between, the show becomes not just a celebration of Shakespeare’s genius but also a joyful, self-aware exploration of why we tell stories in the first place.
This year, we wanted to prioritize a summer season of laughter, one that might bring new fans to the Bard’s work. On the surface, both of our productions are similarly chaotic and comedic, filled with slapstick, satire, and fourth wallbreaking antics. But within the laughter lies a deeper opportunity: to consider how stories, especially timeless ones like Shakespeare’s, continue to reflect the human condition in all its beauty, brokenness, and yearning for truth. Whether through Hamlet’s existential wrestling, the fiery romance of Romeo and Juliet, or the themes of justice, power, and identity echoed across his entire canon, Shakespeare offers a mirror to our own struggles with meaning, purpose, and belonging.
So, how does a comedic romp through all of Shakespeare relate to the Great Commission? This mission is to make disciples by spreading news of the greatest story ever told: the Gospel. Just as this play draws together seemingly disparate tales into one cohesive theatrical journey, we are called to invite every person into the redemptive narrative of Scripture a story that offers hope, transformation, and eternal reconciliation through Christ. Theatre, when approached with intention, is a powerful platform for connection. This show reminds us that humor and humility are vital tools for reaching others. Comedy can disarm. Laughter opens hearts. And creativity can create space for meaningful conversations about truth.
As you enjoy the rapid-fire costume changes, tongue-in-cheek interpretations, and delightful unpredictability of this performance, I encourage you to think about the larger purpose behind the laughter. It is a reminder that all of life, even the ridiculous, can point to the redemptive. We serve a God who delights in joy and who meets us not only in the solemn moments but in the lighthearted ones, too.
May the performance spark your imagination, lift your spirit, and remind you that every good story ultimately points us back to the Author of life.
Zachary Bortot, Artistic Director
To all who are about to see The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) [REVISED] (again):
Shakespearean theatre is many things. It is poetry in motion, it is some of the greatest written words in the history of the world brought to life by the imagination and creativity of artists across age and era, and sometimes it is the silliest, goofiest, rip-roaring way to spend two hours. The show you are about to see exemplifies all three of those qualities, with perhaps a heavy skew towards the latter. In creating this show, we were constantly walking the fine line between reverence for the Bard's work and not taking ourselves too seriously. If someone were to think we are mocking or cheapening what he wrote, it is only through our knowledge and appreciation of his work that we could create a show such as this. Give us your time and open minds and let the joy of the theatre affect you.
It is my hope that, whether you are completely versed in Shakespeare's language and characters, or a new audience to his words, words, words, and stories, you will feel welcomed and thoroughly entertained for the next few hours Theatre, even Shakespearean theatre, is allowed to just be fun. So please, have fun.
Enjoy the show and may the Bard be with you!
