December Update

As the holiday season unfolds, we are reminded of the many reasons we have to be grateful here at Ventana Canyon This time of year brings with it a special energy to our community, and I’m thrilled to see so many of you enjoying the full range of amenities and activities that make our Club a second home for so many.

I’m especially thankful for the unwavering support of our members Your engagement, enthusiasm, and commitment to the Club drive our efforts to make Ventana Canyon a place of connection and enjoyment The feedback you provide throughout the year helps us continue making improvements and hone our focus to the areas that matter to our members the most. Of course, one of these areas is the recently repurposed Catalina Dining Room and Sabino Room. This space, now dedicated as a member area, was born from your feedback The support of the Catalina Dining Room and Sabino Room so far has been truly appreciated and I hope even more of you are able to join us to experience these areas in the coming weeks These spaces were designed to foster community, and we encourage you to take full advantage of them as we head into the busy season

This year, we also embraced the spirit of giving with the launch of Ventana Canyon Gives Back, our new community service initiative. On November 9th, we hosted our first service day at the Community Food Bank Together, a dedicated group of 17 volunteers from Ventana Canyon

packed an astounding 3,976 TEFAP (The Emergency Food Assistance Program) boxes, totaling 31,808 pounds of food These boxes, filled with pantry staples like beans, rice, pasta, and fresh items such as apples, eggs, and milk, will help ensure that families across Southern Arizona have the nutrition they need.

It was a rewarding day filled with teamwork and purpose, and it was inspiring to see our Ventana Canyon team come together to make such a tangible impact for our community I’m excited to expand these opportunities in the new year, with service events that will include member participation Giving back is a reflection of our shared values, and we look forward to partnering with our local community in even greater ways in the months ahead.

As we move through this season of gratitude, I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to each of you Whether you’re spending time on the course, on the courts or in the pool, enjoying a meal with friends, or volunteering your time with one of our committees, events or associations, your contributions make Ventana Canyon the special place that it is.

Here’s to celebrating the holiday season together with gratitude, generosity, and a continued commitment to our community I look forward to seeing you around the Club and sharing in the joy of the season

In Loving Memory of Karyl Jean Huth

Karyl Jean Huth (née Wiemann), 94, departed this life on October 8, 2024 at her home in Ventana Canyon.

Karyl was born on September 6, 1930 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She attended Milwaukee University School and was a member of Service Club of Milwaukee Subsequently, she attended Northwestern University where she was a member of Delta Gamma sorority and graduated with a bachelor's degree in primary education In 1952, she married John Huth After he finished serving in the United States Army in the Korean War, they resided in Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin where they raised four chil- dren and lived happily for 61 years Karyl was a homemaker and kept an immaculate house She volunteered at the Milwaukee Protestant Home for many years helping to decorate the rooms. In 1998, she and John built a home in Ventana Canyon where they wintered until moving there year-round in 2018. They were married for 68 won- derful years until John’s death in 2020.

Karyl was a selfless, generous, loving person with a great memory for details about the lives of people she knew Always smartly dressed, she could be seen wearing her beloved cardigans in any season Karyl was an engaging conversationalist and could put anyone at ease Although an excellent cook, she enjoyed dining out frequently, especially at the Club; she was particularly fond of the dining staff and could chat endlessly with them about their lives She participated in bridge clubs for much of her life, but multiplayer solitaire with her family was also one of her favorite pastimes.

Karyl is survived by her children: Linda Haycraft, Laura (Joseph) Clover, Thomas (Linda), seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren She will be sorely missed by all who knew her in the Ventana Canyon community

Celebrating the Season with Bread Pudding

Holiday season is upon us Late fall giving way to the start of winter brings thoughts of warmth, comfort, family, and for many of us, a particular nostalgia evoked by the smells of warming spices, baked breads, and sumptuous desserts Whether it’s candy canes or Hanukkah gelt or the ubiquitous pumpkin and apple pies or perhaps nonna’s amaretti, sweet treats to be shared with loved ones are a hallmark of the season.

The advent of December heralds for me the return of one of my favorite comforting holiday desserts: bread pudding This humble dish, born from the idea of turning leftover bread into something truly special, offers a delightful combination of warmth and rich flavors that perfectly complement the cozy season (and it is really easy to make, too).

With a myriad of delicious permutations, bread pudding is a versatile dessert that gives you an opportunity to make use of the odds and ends of your pantry Whether it’s panettone, brioche, challah, bolillos, or even pain d’épices, a little milk or cream, eggs, sugar, and spices can give new life to days old bread and cakes, and let you use up the miscellaneous dried fruits and nuts in the cupboard Here I’m including a recipe for one of my favorites, using challah bread, with its egg-rich and sweet flavor profile and its airy lightness that make it a perfect foil for a holiday dessert

Challah Bread Pudding

As noted, this recipe can be adapted to whatever sweet bread or cake you have on hand. I’m partial to using Trader Joe’s Challah for this as it is readily available, inexpensive, and has a flavor profile that really leans into this application (it also makes some pretty stellar French toast)

Ingredients: Serves 8

2 cups milk

¼ cup butter

¼ cup amaretto

¼ cup water

¼ cup golden raisins

¼ cup dried cranberries

2 whole eggs

¾ cups brown sugar

Pinch nutmeg

Pinch cinnamon

1 tsp vanilla

1/8 tsp salt

1 loaf Trader Joe’s Challah, cut into 1 5” cubes

1 cup butternut squash, diced small and roasted

½ cup slivered toasted almonds

Procedure:

1 2

3

4 5 6 7.

8

Scald milk and lower heat

Add in butter and allow to melt

Combine in a small sauce pot the amaretto, water, golden raisins, and dried cranberries Bring to a simmer over low heat to re-hydrate the fruit. Allow to cool slightly after fruit has plumped, set aside

Combine eggs, brown sugar, nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla, and salt and whisk well

Temper the still warm milk and butter mixture into the eggs.

Add the challah and allow it to begin to absorb the custard base

Lastly, add the butternut squash (which should be prepped by dicing and roasting until just soft), the sliced almonds, and the re-hydrated fruit

Place in a loaf pan and bake at 325˚, about 45 minutes

The bread pudding should be firm to the touch, and moist on the inside

Notes:

2

1 Best to add more bread and add extra milk and eggs later, than to make it too wet and try to add more bread later Feel free to adjust this recipe to your palate and what you have in your pantry Don’t care for cranberries, but you've got dried apricots in the cupboard? It's a fine substitution. Not a big fan of squash? Try swapping in diced, sautéed apples or pears

Sustainability Tips for the Month

When you go to a restaurant or coffee shop, do you request a straw? It may seem like no big deal since it's such a small amount of plastic, but these single-use items are actually very hard to recycle, and often end up in the ocean By 2050, there could even be more plastic waste in the ocean than actual fish The solutions? Either drink straight from the cup or bring a reusable straw

Reuse take-out containers.

Before you toss out that take-out container, consider saving them instead More than 10 million tons of plastic containers end up in landfills, while a little less than 2 million are actually recycled Only certain kinds of plastic containers can be reused for storage, so just check the number under the container; plastics numbered 2, 4, and 5 are considered the safest for food storage and repeated reuse Plastics numbered 1, 3, 6 and 7 can leak toxic chemicals into food if reused.

Want to get ahead of the curve? Bring your own containers from home to carry home leftovers

FROST DAMAGE FROM A GOLF CART DRIVING ON FROSTED TURF

Frost season is here as we have experienced three frost delays as of 11/22 We will always try to precall a frost delay, so everyone has time to adjust their plans as needed No one likes frost delays, and we thank you for your patience and understanding when dealing with the delays. Below are a few historical data points on our frost delays.

Most frost delays in a season = 69 (season of 2022/2023)

Least amount of delays in a season = 30 (season of 2014/2015)

Earliest frost event = 10/23/2008

Latest frost event = 12/11/21

All carts were allowed back on the fairways on 11/21/24 We strongly encourage everyone to keep their golf carts in the Ryegrass areas and avoid excessive driving in the dormant areas The dormant areas cannot handle a lot of cart traffic during the winter months and will quickly get hard and compacted, which creates a very difficult lie to hit a golf ball from. Now that all carts are allowed on fairways the handicap or medical flags serve no purpose. ONLY the over 80 flags serve a purpose now.

Reminder to please fill your divots and avoid high traffic areas with your golf cart Also PLEASE avoid leaving scuff marks or dragging your feet on the greens These marks can quickly scar the putting surface and leave a less than desirable putting surface for the groups behind you Lastly, please take a little extra time and properly rake the bunkers after your shot If we all leave the courses in better shape than we find them, it will greatly enhance EVERYONE’S golf experience and may even save you a stroke or two during your round

Please feel free to contact me at 520.577-4013 or ventanacanyon1@qwestoffice.net with any questions or concerns. Swing hard in case you hit it.

I am shocked by how many golfers still carry a 4-iron – or for older players even a 5-iron Maybe it is because they always have, or because the pros do But just because the PGA Tour players carry longer irons does not mean you should too As we age, our ability to swing fast enough to get the most out of longer irons decreases Plus, longer irons have less loft, so getting the ball into the air also becomes more difficult And, even with today’s more forgiving designs, there just is not that much room for error on a 4-iron

At fitting events have seen the trend away from players automatically including longer irons in their sets. Remember the days when a “standard” set was 2-iron through pitching wedge? Now I do not think you can find a major compa- ny making a 2-iron! The new paradigm is order what works and customize your irons to your game

Fred Couples recently said he is only carrying 7-iron through his wedges His reasoning - he cannot swing fast enough to hit longer irons anymore We have also seen tour players adding a 7-wood to their bags because they are so easy to hit On the other hand, on a fitting day we had a player struggling with multiple combinations of hybrids to get the right trajectory he was looking for We put him in a 7-wood and he immediately added height and covered his distance But he just could not wrap his head around hitting a 7-wood My suggestion to you is that if the best players in the world use a 7-wood we should seriously doing the same - without fear of the number on the bottom of the club.

In my mind, I would game anything that let ME be the one collecting the $$$ at the end of the day. I have switched to two utility woods instead of a hybrid/long iron setup and in the near future plan to try a 5 hybrid in place of my 5-iron (that would make five “headcovers” if you are counting) It is all about what works and makes the game easier and more enjoyable for you as the player

Playing golf should be fun Let us make every club in your bag have a purpose, and if it doesn’t, why have it? You only get 14, so if a club doesn’t add something to your game, it is just added weight Does your 3-wood and 5-wood go the same distance? Then one should go When I do distance gapping sessions, players are amazed when they hit the point where all the clubs carry the same distance. That is because swing speed and launch are not good enough to take advantage of the change in loft. I have a friend who essentially had four 8-irons in his bag. They may have had different numbers on the sole, and some had longer shafts, but they all went the same distance! If a 7-iron is the longest iron you can efficiently hit, your 6, 5, & 4 are useless

Golf is hard Being open to the idea of altering your set makeup to match your game should be an easy decision If you have questions about set makeup or are interested in alternatives, just ask – or better yet, come to one of our fitting days and find out if there is something out there that makes your life on the links easier and more enjoyable Enjoy the weather and see you on the range

Practice Time

SUSIE MEYERS

PGA, Golf Instructor

Golf Top 100 Teachers in America

We have an unbelievable golf facility here at Ventana Canyon! With the weather changing, golfers are drawn to the practice facility to enjoy watching their golf ball fly high and long It can be of value for you to know how to spend your time there Are you just warming up for your round, trying to work out the kinks or are you wanting to develop your game to a higher level? Either way you can make your training time more efficient and complete if you also are aware of your thoughts and the process your mind is going through.

Training is not just about hitting balls or making putts, you can also train your mental game By being aware of your mindset, you can learn how to deal with stress, frustration, and accepting what you can’t change (a poor shot)! Ignoring the misses allows you to continue working on a feeling or picture that you want to happen Trying to “fix” your last golf shot is futile because the next shot is not dependent on your last shot Anything could happen it is out of your control! What is in your control is your pre-shot routine and what you are thinking How you react to poor outcomes on the practice facility could help you train yourself to be resilient and stay positive both on the course and in practice, no matter the outcome Training your mental routine for each shot and your reaction to each shot is a big part of the practice.

For every golf stroke the following three steps will help you develop what you want to think and how your golf stroke can develop with simple disciplines.

Take a deep breath and visualize each shot just as you would on the golf course. Have a quiet mind and allow your body to react to the picture you give yourself. Hold your balanced finish and you will find better contact with the ball.

Train your Point A Thinking

Think about what you want (not about what you don’t want)

Create a clear picture and train yourself to be as quiet as possible

Your process includes a picture, and a feel that matches the picture. Commit to that picture and holding your finish

Train to have the same process both mentally and physically with each stroke

Begin every stroke at Point A (free from past burdens and a new opportunity to do your very best in this moment).

Create a Point A mindset on the practice range and it will allow you to strengthen the type of thinking that will also help you on the golf course.

Mindful Holiday Eating!

Here are some helpful tips to manage your waistline over the holidays!

1 Portion control, be mindful of the amount of food you are ingesting

2 Use a smaller plate, you won’t tend to overfill your plate.

3 Sit away from the food that was prepared so you are not tempted to go back for seconds or thirds.

4 Take time to enjoy the taste and texture of your meal.

5 Slow down while eating, you will more likely experience the feeling of being full.

6 Avoid distractions, you often don’t notice how

7. Follow the 80% rule. Stop eating before you are completely full.

8. Write it down. Keeping an honest journal

makes you aware of your intake throughout the day

9. Eat less when you are eating out. Ask for a to go container when you order and put half your meal in the container before eating Make a meal out of an appetizer or two or share an entree

10 Avoid value meals Getting more food for your value also means getting extra calories.

11 Avoid sweetened drinks, they are packed with calories and easy to overconsume. Try a slice of lemon or lime in a glass of sparkling water. If you are partaking in alcoholic beverages, try to limit your consumption as these contain calories that can add up quickly much you consume if you are multitasking, such as eating while driving or watching TV.
