The Bernberg fashion museum is demolished to make way for the Holocaust museum. (Inset) Although proposed plans for the new Holocaust museum have yet to be finalised, this is what it will probably look like.

Breaking ground New Holocaust museum to be built in Forest Town NONKULULEKO MBULI A Holocaust museum is being built on the site of the old Bernberg fashion museum in Forest Town. The new building will serve as a home for the Joburg Holocaust and Genocide Centre (JHGC) and as a memorial to the millions killed during the Holocaust. “The title deed said the land must be put to community use,” said Steven Sacks, city council’s director

of art, culture and heritage. Initially it was thought the property would become an art gallery, but due to last year’s economic downturn, this idea fell through. A second proposal came from the JHGC to turn the premises into its new base. “It’s so exciting. We want to teach people about the consequences of prejudice, racism, xenophobia and

the dangers of indifference and silence,” said JHGC director Tali Nates. Sacks said some articles from the fashion museum would be kept at Museum Africa in Newtown and others at the Fashion District in the CBD. Until now the centre has operated from a temporary location with only three full-time staff members. The new facility will boast a

multimedia exhibition, seminar rooms, resource centre, coffee shop, bookshop, and memorial garden. “The museum will link with the school syllabus, the primary case studies being World War II and the Rwandan genocide,” said Sacks. The educational centre will provide a historical overview of Nazi Germany, with survivor testimonies, and include what

Nates described as the ‘African experience’, highlighting the importance of observing human rights and respecting diversity. The building project is headed by renowned architect and sculptor Lewis Levin. “Demolition and groundwork just started and we hope to complete the building by late 2011,” confirmed Nates. - mbulin@caxton.co.za

GAZETTE REPORTER Shout, the anti-crime movement led by South African celebrities, will make its first cheque handover at the end of June. The Shout Foundation formed by Danny K and Kabelo Mabalane brought together 55 artists to re-record the hit 80s single Shout by Tears for Fears. “Since launching the SMS campaign and Shout song downloads, there is a 60-day period before money donated filters through to Shout,” explained Shout Foundation chairman, Yusuf Abramjee. “In addition, auditing processes need to be completed and all donations reconciled before they are allocated.” Since its launch: z More than 48 000 Shout single

Not a pet’s best friend AYANDA BUTHELEZI Vuvuzelas were cheerfully blown to welcome the festivities around the 2010 Fifa World Cup ™, but pet owners dreaded the effect they had on their pets. A local veterinary surgeon reported having treated several pets petrified by the loud blowing of vuvuzelas. “We have had complaints from pet owners whose pets hid under beds and behind couches. For such cases, we prescribed sedatives to help them cope. “There are also effective homeopathic remedies available that may be bought across the counter at most surgeries to help keep your pet calm.” Pet owner Pam Blumenthal said she was mostly concerned about damage to her pets’ ears. “I’m afraid animals may lose their hearing from the noise,” she said. Sandton SPCA spokesman Candice Segal said, “It is well known that dogs and cats have hearing that is superior to that of humans. A dog’s hearing ranges from as low as 16 Hz to as high as 100 000 Hz. We appeals to vuvuzela users to be aware and sensitive to pets’ health and safety. “Do not blow a vuvuzela in close range of your pet and if your dogs or cats are frightened by the sound, make sure they

are kept in a secure and safe environment during matches or times of celebration. We support the 2010 Fifa World Cup™ as well as responsible pet care.” -ayandab@caxton.co.za Advice for animal owners The SPCA advises residents to adopt the following guidelines to help protect their pets: z Ensure all animals have identification (i.e. microchip and/or identity tag). z If possible stay at home with them and help keep them calm. z If you can’t be at home keep your pets inside and preferably in a room that is safe and secure. z Try and subdue any noise by drawing the curtains and playing calming music. z Put familiar and comforting things around them. z Give your pets a nutritious and balanced meal at night – this is likely to make them more sleepy. z Give them something to chew on, a chewy bone or catnip toys for cats. z Keep pets indoors during anticipated high noise level periods such as when vuvuzelas may used. Proposed liquor stores a worry HEATHER WALKER Craighall Park residents are worried about the impact two new liquor stores will have on their neighbourhood. The CraigPark Residents Association (CRA) is aware of two licence applications lodged with the Gauteng Liquor Board, both in the vicinity of Lancaster and Clarence avenues. “Based on feedback, many residents do not want two bottle stores in the middle of a residential area. There are already six in a 1km radius, as well as five schools and six places of worship,” said the CRA’s Wendy McAllister. McAllister said the CRA had lodged objections to each application but the one to be situated in what looked like a garage added to Lancaster Village (applied for as Wine & Liquor Craighall) might have already been granted a conditional liquor licence. “The CRA has met with the owner and is deeply concerned that proper processes may not have been followed and we were deliberately misled. We keep getting contradictory information from the Gauteng Liquor Board. Dealing with

Blowing vuvuzelas near animals petrifies them.

this entity has been a nightmare. “We have thus been advised to organise a petition. We urge anyone against these developments to obtain as many signatures as possible by 27 June. “This is an essential step to ensure your views are made known. If we can get at least 500 signatures this will make a strong statement and make it more difficult for similar applications in the future.” Dr Lisa Klein is one of the residents who objected to the liquor stores. “There is documented evidence of increased criminal activity around such retail outlets. “A study in New Zealand by the Alcohol Advisory Council found a link between the level of alcohol-related harm to the community and the number of liquor outlets. A higher liquor outlet density is associated with increased levels of violence, crime and road crashes.” z To obtain a copy of the petition phone Wendy 083-365-8410 or e-mail wendym@ creativecoms.co.za - heatherw@caxton.co.za

This cup runneth over The 2010 Fifa World Cup South Africa™ has been one massive jol. But winter chill aside, there have been some interesting titbits off the pitch. Rewind to the Kick-Off Celebration Concert at Orlando Stadium when a spectator hurled unprintable words at Archbishop Desmond Tutu and called for Madiba to address the crowd instead. Take for instance a group of intoxicated young men who camped in the media bus outside Soccer City complaining about the problems they had with South Africa, eventually leaving after police intervened. Or an elderly English scribe who likened domestic workers at his World Cup residence to slavery, inequality and apartheid, and said this was a shame for a country with a history of racial tension. However, being proud South Africans we were quick to put him in his place by pointing out that in Mzansi it was called job creation, and his views were insulting. During a trip to the Argentina vs

Korea Republic clash, a bus driver had no clue how to reach Soccer City. At Ellis Park the other night, a vendor approached Rosebank Killarney Gazette scribes and offered to sell them earplugs. Wrong men; we love vuvuzelas extremely loud! Then there are people who hang around stadiums wanting used match tickets to keep as collectors’ items. Sorry mates, World Cup mementos are vital to everyone. All in all, the feedback from foreign journalists has been good. And they love our stadiums, although most have slammed our non-existent public transport, as expected. An American advertising executive advised the South African government to continue working towards improving public transport with projects such as Gautrain and Rea Vaya even after the World Cup has ended because ‘what we have seen on your roads is a disaster’. Hopefully, Transport Minister Sbu Ndebele is taking notes. - kennedym@caxton.co.za

AMANDA WATSON A proposed skydeck petrol station over the M1 in Waverley has come to life again. First highlighted in the Gazette in March 2009, residents objected to a petrol station being built over the M1 highway at the Atholl-Oaklands on/offramp. Now a refined re-zoning application has come to light, which aims to turn public open space adjacent to the highway into a petrol filling station and related uses. Objector Marian Laserson raised key issues to the latest application. “To begin with, where will the petrol tanks be placed? “The two rivers in the immediate vicinity are tributaries of the Sandspruit, a very important tributary of the Jukskei River. “This is unacceptable and ecologically disastrous when you think of oil, litter and petrol spillages being washed into the streams and ground water,” said

Laserson. Noel Hutton of Gavin Edwards Town Planning had objected to the initial proposal on behalf of an interested and affected party (I&AP). “This new application doesn’t have any material changes other than the rezoning, and our initial objection to the skydeck stands,” said Hutton. Laserson said that objections to the town planning application closed on 7 June, but objections and comments for the environmental impact assessment (EIA) were ongoing. “The public is at liberty to comment individually on the EIA and to register as an I&AP. “If anyone has any environmental or historic knowledge of the area, please register as this kind of information is critical to an EIA” Details: Mills and Otten Environmental Consultants 011-486-0062 or www. millsotten.co.za - amandaw@caxton.co.za

Shelter from the storm HEATHER WALKER The work done to care for destitute people in and around Rosebank may not be obvious to many, but its impact is huge. This was apparent at the annual general meeting of the Rosebank Homeless Association (RHA), where the RHA and its project partners shared their progress. “The Zinto Zinhle sewing group continues to make and sell various goods, and the car guard project is being capably managed by the Rosebank Management District, Yousuf Seedat and the Rosebank police,” said RHA chairman Judith Briggs. Jacob Modise, manager of the Immaculata shelter in Sturdee Avenue, said the shelter housed 100 residents who were served breakfast and supper every day. “We also serve a daily cooked meal to people who sleep on the streets. We provide 6 668 people with hot meals per year. The shelter offers medicine, transport to hospitals and counselling. We assist outsiders and residents to obtain ID documents, pension and disability grants, and basic computer skills,” he said. Modise thanked volunteers from St

The Saxonwold and Parkwood Residents Association (Sapra) Green Team had been running for a year, reported Sapra chairman Theo Covary. It employed homeless people to clean the streets of the two suburbs once a week, thus serving a dual purpose - providing jobs and looking after the environment. “Bokamoso (meaning future) aims to provide a future for the children of the homeless. It started in 2002 when a crèche was opened in Hillbrow for children of Homeless Talk vendors but now raises funds to sponsor children of the homeless in various crèches, and currently sponsors 13 children,” said Bokamoso chairman Eve Jammy. “After discovering how under-resourced these schools are we are also helping to organise book and toy donations, as well as training for the teachers.” added Jammy. City Power supports Boost for hospitals Bafana in style DONALD LOBELO City Power unveiled its ‘secret project’ at its head office in Booysens when it showed video footage of the Nelson Mandela Bridge at Night. Silas Zimu, managing director at City Power said the renovations and decorations at the bridge were a legacy project. “The Nelson Mandela Bridge will be a colourful monument throughout the 2010 Fifa World Cup™ and beyond. This project aims to honour Madiba whom everyone has come to know as an icon. It’s one of the beautification projects the city has embarked on and is a tourist destination,â€? said Zimu. Whenever Bafana Bafana played, the team’s colours would be displayed on one side of the bridge, with those of the opposition team on the opposite side. However if Bafana didn’t make it to the next round, the bridge would continue to display different colours every day. In addition the utility launched an on-line Fault Logging Facility which customers could use to log faults directly from City Power website or via WAP from their cell-phones. Head of Engineering at City Power, Louise Pieterse said this would help reduce the long queues and address the problems. Letters to the editor Write to: Rosebank Killarney Gazette, PO Box 1797 Pinegowrie 2123, fax 011-889-0683 or e-mail rkg@caxton.co.za

The editor welcomes your letters. Letters must include the writer’s name, street address and telephone number, but a nom de plume may be used for publishing. The editor reserves the right to edit, shorten and reject letters.

Circle is doing its job Mac Steynberg writes: I am concerned about the obvious campaign against the Chester Road mini circle your letters page. These campaigns are usually driven by one or two people who rope their friends into their efforts to create the impression of popular concern. The purpose of traffic circles is primarily to distribute traffic fairly at intersections. A secondary effect is that they discourage speeding and provide better regulated traffic flow. This is exactly what the little circle in question has done. It solved the problem of side entry to the intersection and it should be regarded a satisfactory traffic calming measure. The major east/

west restriction occurs at the traffic lights on either side of the circle. There is therefore a negligible adverse effect or delay caused by the circle. Your other correspondents have no apparent sympathy for the plight of people other than those using the main thoroughfare. The Joburg Roads Agency engineers should be commended, not criticised. Throughout my career as a traffic engineer I found a major recurrent nuisance the fact that every second person regarded himself as a traffic engineer qualified to comment on work done by professionals. This appears to be the case in this particular instance.

What a positive day Pat Mudde of Greenside writes: We were at Sandton Square enjoying the vibe of all the foreign visitors and different soccer teams mingling. What a festive crowd and wonderful atmosphere.Having just finished breakfast at Nelson Mandela Square, we engaged in conversation with a young man at the table next to ours. He was on such a high having been to the opening ceremony and was on his way to a game that afternoon. He said he and his colleagues attended matches around the world, but had

never experienced such a brilliant vibe. What he could not understand was why our newspapers ran with the negative stories on their front pages, instead of highlighting the positive and uplifting stories. After this heart-warming praise for our beloved South Africa we walked across the square where a crowd was taking photos, laughing and joking with each other. We went into the Sony tent and watched a 20-minute free 3D screen show. While standing watching the crowds at Nelson Mandela Square we noticed a few uniformed police

members walking among them. One member walked across to the open deck of a restaurant and politely pointed out to a man sitting with his friends at a table that his bag was at risk and could easily be snatched. He asked him to please place it in a safer place away from the crowd. My husband and I were so uplifted by this policeman’s polite action that my husband went over to congratulate him. Walter Kwanaite is the Sector 3 manager at Sandton police station and was an absolute gentleman. We need more police of Kwanaite’s calibre.

Lower Parkwood being swamped by rat running and Dee Street and virtually any shortcut they can find, has only started since the circle was erected in Chester Road. Trying to sort out a problem in Chester Road, which is a main thoroughfare with businesses and flats, has now affected five other suburban streets. The solution to this problem is not building speed bumps in every other street - the problem must be sorted out at the core, which is Chester Road.

THUMBS UP FOR BAFANA: Samma Hlophe and Christina Maleka of Lower Houghton were among the many locals celebrating the 2010 Fifa World Cup™ at The Brightwater Commons.

Let’s innovate, not imitate Yousuf Karrim writes: I agree with Heather Walker’s column Road by any other name (Gazette, week ending 18 June). Road signs around Joburg require upgrading and I appreciate they are being put up where they are missing, but let’s get it correct. Also, why do we only do this when foreigners come? What about fixing these and other problems when there is no major event? Why can’t this be done so that residents, who pay for these services through high taxes, can enjoy the benefits? The beautifying of pavements and maintenance of roads show that ,firstly, our government can

do things and find the money to do so only when it wants to and, secondly, that it doesn’t care about the residents of this country, those who pay their taxes anyway. Why were these upgrades not done earlier? And should they dare say they don’t have money, they should investigate their inefficient spending. Most obvious are the luxury cars that race in the emergency lanes of our roads. Seven vehicles used to transport a few delegates include Q7s, X5s and BMW 5 series among others. The value of these cars is nearly R3.5 million. What’s wrong with a Toyota Corolla? It’s also

cheaper to maintain. Back to the street signs - we should use concrete T-slabs with engraved street names, like in Cape Town. The engraving should be covered by clear perspex to prevent erosion. The slab should be placed on the pavement, as cars eventually climb the curb and leave a black mark on the paint. These signs will not be stolen as they are not metal, unlike street name poles. Unfortunately, our government’s thinking is primitive and inefficient. I hope there is someone with half a brain within our government to realise this and push for intelligent, innovative and efficient change.

Suburban blips BY HEATHER WALKER

This holiday is more than just a date “Which public holiday is it today anyway?” I overheard one lankhaired young man say to another as they slouched through the shopping centre. “Dunno,” shrugged his friend. The irony was stupendous. Members of the very sector of the population who should have known it was Youth Day didn’t have a clue. And it was clear they simply didn’t care, as long as they had a day off. They were, no doubt, not the only young people oblivious of the meaning behind the celebration of Youth month. There must be plenty more throughout the country with a similar sense of apathy. On one hand you can’t really blame them - youngsters are notorious for not knowing what’s really good for them. At one high school assembly, our deputy headmaster spent what felt like eternity telling us in excruciating detail the history of Youth Day. Like typical know-it-all teenagers, we rolled our eyes and yawned,

hoping this speech wouldn’t cut into our break time. It was probably an interesting talk, and we would have learned something had we listened properly, but it was way cooler to pretend we weren’t bothered. The same goes for other public holidays. Ask a young person what is commemorated on 16 December or 24 September and the reply is likely to be ‘Um, like... our right to party?’ More practical countries like the UK don’t mark significant dates. They simply schedule evenly-spaced bank holidays – on Mondays, to give people long weekends with minimal work disruption. Our seemingly haphazard yet meaningful public holidays are a unique aspect of our culture to be proud of. We shouldn’t take them for granted, but rather make an effort to find out what they commemorate. In doing so, we are actively keeping democracy alive. - heatherw@caxton.co.za

Ort SA chief executive officer Brad Rosmarin and Teljoy executive chairman Theo Rutstein.

Ort gives thanks GAZETTE REPORTER OrtJet has made a difference to 376 businesses, a feat that could not have been achieved without the help and dedication of OrtJet’s consultants. An annual Sasfin-sponsored breakfast was held by OrtJet at the Killarney Country Club with décor inspired by the upcoming Fifa World Cup™, which created a festive atmosphere. The breakfast was a gesture to thank the 400 businessmen and women who gave of their time to help businesses in need. Ort SA chief executive Brad

Rosmarin expressed his gratitude to the consultants and said, “Giving of your time is valuable to our cause as it gives people the tools to succeed.” Dr Warren Goldstein explained that earning a living was often underestimated and that being able to provide for oneself and one’s family was one of the greatest gifts of life. He said because of OrtJet people were spared the embarrassment of having to ask for charity. The ongoing support of entrepreneurs like Teljoy

executive chairman Theo Rutstein enabled OrtJet to make a difference. The Sheldon Cohen Award for Consultant of the Year was awarded to Alan Menachemson. Ort SA’s London Marathon runners were also honoured for their dedication to the campaign. Future events to look out for are OrtJet’s networking functions and ‘Best’ lectures, which cover courses like business planning, accounting, marketing and sales advice. Details: www.ortjet.org

He’s got groove, he’s got meaning HEATHER WALKER Hollywood actor John Travolta showed he was a family man at heart when he visited the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund in Saxonwold. He was in South Africa as the goodwill ambassador for Qantas Airways, and to support the Australian football team, the Socceroos. He, his wife Kelly Preston and

their 10-year-old daughter Ella were welcomed by a group of children supported by the Fund, and were enthralled by their musical performances, one of them entitled Eye in the Sky, Foot on the Ground. On behalf of Qantas Travolta presented a R70 000 cheque as a gift to the organisation, and handed out Socceroos jerseys and scarves to the youngsters.

He expressed his love for children and how important they were. He added, “Children keep you humble, children keep you grounded.” Travolta showed he hadn’t lost his rhythm when he ended the proceedings by inviting the children to dance with him on stage. - heatherw@caxton.co.za

Help to feed a hungry family GAZETTE REPORTER Feed a Family is an organisation in Orange Grove that provides underprivileged families in squatter camps with a loaf of bread and a litre of milk. Many families in squatter camps are unemployed, which leads to hungry children, undernourished pregnant mothers and young mothers. “They wait for our visits so they can nourish their bodies. It actually hurts us when all our bread and milk is handed out

because there are still thousands of unfed people who look at us with disappointment, because it means another hungry day,” said the organisation’s Malcolm Poovan. Feed a Family aims to alleviate the poverty, crime and HIV in society and feels it can reach more people when their stomachs are full rather than empty. “Let’s get South Africans to rally around feeding underprivileged people and be a blessing to those less fortunate. It costs just R13 per

day to feed a family. It’s not a lot of money. However, the impact your R13 can have on the South African population is priceless. I remember the first day my friend and I went into a camp and fed families. The warm feeling it gave us when we left, also the looks on their faces, especially the children, when we left, made us pledge to make this our lifelong mission to feed people,” Poovan added. GAZETTE REPORTER The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (Sadag) said bipolar disorder was the sixth leading cause of disability in the world and more than four million South Africans could have a mood disorder. Bipolar disorder is an illness that causes severe mood swings, from manic highs to deep depression. Three to four percent of the population is affected by this illness. Bipolar disease is still largely stigmatised with sufferers being labelled ‘crazy’, ‘unstable’, and ‘dangerous’. Two types of mood episodes occur in bipolar disorder - manic and depressive episodes. Symptoms of a manic episode are: z Needing little sleep yet having great amounts of energy, z Talking so fast that others can’t follow, z Being so easily distracted that your attention shifts between many topics in just a few minutes,

z Having an inflated feeling of power, greatness, or importance, z Extreme irritability and distractibility. Symptoms of a depressive episode are: z Feeling sad or depressed, z Losing interest in things you normally enjoy, z Trouble sleeping or sleeping too much, z Feeling slowed down or hyperactive, z Feeling worthless or guilty or having very low self-esteem, z Thoughts of suicide or death. Bipolar disorder: z often disrupts work, school, family and social life, z typically begins in adolescence or early adulthood and continues throughout life, z can also affect children, however diagnosis is difficult as many symptoms mimic symptoms of other disorders such as ADHD. Tips to drink responsibly GAZETTE REPORTER During the biggest sporting showpiece in the world, the Industry Association for Responsible Alcohol Use asks all revellers to be responsible as they cheer on their favourite teams. To help them, the association offers the following tips: z Avoid drinking alcohol on an empty stomach. Always eat before and while drinking alcohol. Choose foods high in fat and carbohydrates. z If you drink alcoholic beverages

do so in moderation. z Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water before, during and after drinking alcohol. z Pace yourself by having a non-alcoholic drink between the alcoholic ones. z Don’t become a World Cup binge drinker. It is easy to get caught up in the festivities and drink excessively during this time z As alcohol affects your judgement and reaction times, driving is out of the question. The physical and emotional trauma

caused by drunk drivers is entirely preventable. Alcohol-related motor vehicle accidents are one of the most common causes of death among people aged 15 to 20. If you’ve been drinking, don’t drive. z Don’t supply drink to underage persons. The legal drinking age is 18. z Avoid lifts from strangers, especially when intoxicated. z Make sure you know who pours your drink. Don’t accept drinks from strangers. z Choose a designated driver up

front or club together to hire a car or mini-bus with a driver. z Always keep the number of a cab company on your cellphone. Ensure that you have enough money set aside in your wallet for this, should you know you are not in a position to drive home. z If you host a party to watch the games at your home, don’t allow guests to drive home. Rather let them sleep it off at your house or get someone else to drive them home. Details: www.ara.co.za

Good day TOP TV I need to express my sincere gratitude for a service that is truly second to none.I have just installed my TOP TV package and the service that I received from TOP TV in particular Melinda Connor was really excellent. Throughout the whole process from sourcing the installer to offering guidance throughout the installation process,I was never for one moment uncertain about anything or not sure when my installation will take place. Both Nicole and Melinda were constantly in contact with me and I was always re-assured that the installation will be done on a certain day and at a certain time, and that’s exactly how it happened. That’s really good service from this service provider and upon completion of the installation I was given a friendly courtesy call to make sure that I was happy and that I understood how the system works. Its great to have an alternative service provider, and I wish TOP TV the very best for the future and I am sure that they will do well because if this kind of service is any indication to go by,then I think that only the sky is the limit for this service provider. White Zulu dances on Johnny Clegg celebrates 30 years of music in Spirit is the Journey.

HEATHER WALKER No better expression could encapsulate Johnny Clegg’s passion than Spirit is the Journey. This is the title track of a new compilation celebrating 30 years of Clegg’s music, with some of his favourite songs from his Juluka, Savuka and solo years. But it’s not a ‘best of’ album, Clegg emphasised. “It’s more like a scrapbook. Most of the tracks were never released as singles, but chosen for personal, political and cultural reasons. “I included Scatterlings of Africa, however, because it is was the best selling single that started my career as a full-time musician.” The album includes a DVD of Clegg performing some of the traditional Zulu guitar songs he first learned as a teenager, and were a huge influence on him. More than three decades later, Clegg recalled how it all began. “When I was 15 I met Charlie Mzila, who was playing his guitar in the street. I begged him to teach me and for the next few years I went with him to hostels and shebeens learning Zulu

dancing, music and stick fighting. I wanted to be a real Zulu warrior.” Clegg released his first record in 1979 and by 1984 had become world famous. In 1988 Michael Jackson cancelled his show in Lyon, France as he couldn’t sell more than 8 000 tickets on the night Clegg was performing for 40 000 people. The next day’s papers carried the headline ‘Lyon prefers the white who wants to be black to the black who wants to be white.’ “I’m not a world musician, I’m a crossover artist,” Clegg insisted. “I mix genres, melodies and languages. I think that has contributed to my music’s universal popularity.” Clegg has had a busy year. He presented the TV documentary A Country Imagined, recorded a new CD to be released later this year and is doing several Spirit is the Journey 30th anniversary concerts. One of these is at the Joburg Theatre on 26 and 27 June at 8pm. Clegg will tell his story using anecdotes, history, anthropological facts and his well-known songs. Classy affair at Northwards HEATHER WALKER As the ladies and gentleman bedecked in their finery and elegant hats sat down to tea, their merry chatter filled the ornate dining room. It could have been a scene from a Jane Austen novel – but it wasn’t. It was the Mad Hatters tea party hosted by the Parktown & Westcliff Heritage Trust at Northwards, its home on Parktown Ridge. The guests arrived wearing headgear ranging from cowboy to Panama to pillbox hats, and assembled in the manicured garden to admire the view across Joburg. Their guide, Alex Parker, gave a brief history of Northwards, designed by Sir Herbert Baker for the Dale Lace family and completed in

1904. After everyone had an opportunity to explore the restored interior of the house, they were served tea, sandwiches and cake. Parker presented a talk on The life and times of Isabella Beeton, creator of the well-known Mrs Beeton’s Book of Household Management. Cobras in play-offs NIE CELE Caxton Cobras ended their run in the Supersport Corporate Soccer League on a high note by thumping a stubborn Transnet outfit 3-0 at Sandown high school. This was Cobras last game before the knockout stages. Cobras started the game on fire but failed to convert easy chances. Coach Abed Ahmed missed two clear-cut scoring opportunities and shot wide on both occasions. Cobras utility player Wesley Tiel failed to capitalise on a brilliant defence-splitting pass with only the goalkeeper to beat. As the game progressed Tiel tried hard in vain for a goal but was denied by the poles or shot wide. The opposition was often made to chase shadows by Cobras strikers Tiel and Ishaq Ismail and the team showed little intention of scoring as they played individual soccer characterised by dribbling and poor finishing up front. Half time score was 0-0.

Joshua da Silva (left) on the high bar and David da Silva (right) on the parallel bars during the Central Gauteng Regional MAG competition.

World at their feet

ZANELE SABELA “It felt like I was standing on top of the world,” said David da Silva of his victory at the Men’s Artistic Gymnastics Northzone competition at the Linder Auditorium at Wits University Education Campus. David (11) came first in Level 13 and has been chosen to compete at the National Championships in September this year. His twin brother, Joshua, came in sixth on that occasion but was first overall in level 2 at the Central Gauteng Regional Competition on 14 May. The Sharonlea twins have been doing gymnastics for two years at Visions Gymnastics at the Hillfox Centre. Their proud mother Kim da Silva said she enrolled them because

she wanted them to exercise and develop their gross motor skills. She said she also chose the sport because the twins were home schooled independent of the traditional school system. Da Silva said she chose to home school her boys because she wanted to be more involved in their education. “They are doing very well. “We had them assessed and they are on par with their peers,” she explained. A registered nurse and midwife, Da Silva stopped working when the twins were born. Her husband Greg da Silva runs his photographic business from home. “We are a close-knit family.” She said the boys were not missing out on social interaction as they had many friends who

attended regular school and the family belonged to four different home school groups. “Once a month we go on an educational outing with one of the groups and visit places like Scibono and the Coca Cola factory. We go out socially at least once a week,” she explained. David and Joshua attend gymnastics three times a week. Their mother said she had seen a difference in their self-esteem and discipline since they started. “It has also improved their ability to concentrate.” Joshua said he was amazed when he won at the Central Gauteng meet. “I never thought I would win. It means I am a very good gymnast because the competition was really difficult,” he said. - zaneles@caxton.co.za

PONY RIDERS: The Gauteng Horse Society (GHS) team of Chelsey Gertenbach (Kyalami), Marisa Cetinich (Beaulieu), Laurence Mowatt (Beaulieu), Alexandra Claasen (Dainfern), Danielle Nortje (Bryanston) and Georgina Cross (Craighall) flanked by judge Brian Noach, chef d’equipe Lynda Kirchmann and GHS chairman Panayioti Stais took top honours at the pony showing championship.

BOWLS z Craighall Neerlandia Bowling Club invites all to take part in bowls with coaching weekday evenings

In the second half Cobras dominated the game as per instruction of the coach, who was on the touchline after being substituted by assistant coach and kit manager, Sandile waka-Zamisa. His instruction to dribble and shoot from a distance paid dividends as Transnet seemed in all sorts of trouble as Cobras took control. A beautiful cross by Ismail was headed into the net by Warren Dollie to give Cobras a 1-0 lead. That opened the floodgates as Cobras took the game to their opponents. A slick interchange of passes by Cobras in the middle resulted in the ball landing at the feet of nimble super-substitute Peter Ramothwala who unleashed a sledgehammer that gave Cobras a 2-0 lead. Four minutes later Tsepo Vilakazi dribbled past three Transnet players and sent a cracker into the net that gave Cobras a 3-0 finish. - citybeat@caxton.co.za GOLF z Cansa fundraising golf days on 26 June at Houghton golf course and 3 July at Killarney Country Club. Paddlers go for glory GAZETTE REPORTER Piers Cruickshanks and his K2 partner Jacques Theron were the top Gauteng team at the national Canoe Marathon Championships. Cruickshanks, a teacher at Kingsmead College, and Theron who lives in Parkhurst, came third in the senior men’s race on the Keurbooms River in Plettenberg Bay. After a disappointing first lap they managed to make up time to catch the front bunch over the course of the race and finished in 2:10, a second behind the winners, Grant van der Walt and Hank McGregor from Natal. Cruickshanks and Theron are both from the Gauteng Canoe Union’s flagship Dabulamanzi Club at Emmarentia Dam. “The partners recently won the Umkomaas K2 river championships – generally recognised as the largest body of water in the country although it was sadly low this year due to shortage of rainfall at the time of the race,” said Jennie Dallas of the Gauteng Canoe Union. “The format for marathons is a lap-style course with a 150m portage section near the end of each 4.3km lap. “The final lap includes a portage as well as an additional 500m paddle to the finish line which makes the race much more exciting for spectators and racers. The championship course tries to replicate the World Marathon Championship course as closely as possible in format, and runs clockwise,” she explained. Based on their performance at the national championship, Cruickshanks and Theron have a good chance of being selected for the South African team in the world championships.
