Ghost town Despite the shortage of sport facilities in Midrand, Noordwyk Park is abandoned
PETER RAMOTHWALA peterr@caxton.co.za WHILE Midrand community is hopping mad over the suspension of outside sports activities and meetings at Midrand high school, another
sporting facility shows signs of obvious neglect. The facility is in Noordwyk, and is deserted and dilapidated. The netball and tennis court adjacent to Noordwyk Park has a rusted fence and tall grass. The deserted facility is also used as a test ground by driving
schools (pictured). The sports facility was reportedly last used about 10 years ago. This comes just over a week after Midrand Reporter reported that the local hockey club, Midrand United football club and the ANC Youth League
football and netball clubs were no longer allowed to use Midrand high school as it was built on an agricultural site that required rezoning. Ward 92 councillor Sinnah Ramakhula said whoever needed to use the sports facility should first

Workers in crash AT LEAST 15 people were injured, one critically, in an accident on the N1 near the Olifantsfontein off ramp in Midrand . A Nissan bakkie ferrying construction workers was travelling on the N1 towards Johannesburg when the driver lost control and collided with two cars before overturning. Netcare 911 spokesman
Chris Botha said as the vehicle tumbled down the highway its canopy crumpled and the occupants and trench-digging tools were thrown from the vehicle. “Paramedics arrived on the scene and after triaging the patients found that one passenger from the bakkie had sustained critical injuries, eight others were seriously injured while
six people escaped with minor injuries.” Paramedics stabilised the critically injured patient and transported him to the Netcare Sunninghill Hospital for treatment. The remainder of the patients were treated on scene and transported to Tembisa Hospital for medical care,” said Botha.
Centre’s principal and deputy denied bail PETER RAMOTHWALA peterr@caxton.co.za THE magistrate in the indecent assault case against two South African Timber & Recovery Juvenile Life Skills Training Centre officials told the defence they were boring the court with lack of evidence. This was after the defence failed to explain where the accused would live should the Midrand Magistrates Court granted them bail.
The two, principal Johan Logan and deputy Cornelius Uys, had previously lived at the centre. The court heard that Logan, before his arrest, said he would help Uys escape to Swaziland if granted bail. The witness told the court that Logan said he had a contact in a timber mill based in Swaziland where he would place Uys. The court further heard that the centre had defaulted on rental payment for the property and was R300 000 in arrears. It was also on the verge of closing
down. The two centre officials are alleged to have indecently assaulted about nine boys. The centre housed delinquent children expelled from Gauteng schools. In a statement Logan’s lawyer Mohamed Sunail from Kirpal Attorneys said, “We were informed there was a conspiracy to remove both Logan and Uys from the school as there was an interest from other educators to take control of foreign funding to the amount of R300 000.” The hearing continues on 24 June.
Police search for con woman PETER RAMOTHWALA peterr@caxton.co.za MIDRAND police are looking for a woman in her 20s in connection with a series of thefts in Sunridge Village, Noordwyk. Police spokesman Warrant Officer Mmakgomo Semono said the woman allegedly stole a laptop, camera and World Cup tickets from one of the units. “This is after a Zimbabwean found her loitering next to his unit and offered to hear her story since she was crying. “The suspect said she was hijacked and her keys were taken and she needed a place to sleep for a night.” “The complainant went to a neighbouring residential unit to help her with accommodation and when he came back found she had disappeared with his belongings,” said Semono. Cyclists are under fire SANDILE WAKA-ZAMISA sandilez@caxton.co.za MIDRAND Country Cyclists(MCC) are threatening to take the law into their own hands after losing cycling equipment and personal belongings valued at more than R300 000 during a hijacking on the weekend. Cyclists said the police failed to protect them despite several hijackings in the past months. Five cyclists were ambushed by six armed robbers who held them at gunpoint and stole their bikes and cellphones near Groenvoer Market on Sunday morning. MCC captain Wayne Burnett said one of the hijackers had a gun and the others were carrying knobkerries. He said cyclists were soft targets for hijackers. “We have tried to garner support from the police holding several meetings and reporting hijacking incidents but nothing has been done to protect us. There are no patrol
vehicles assigned for cyclists and that makes us vulnerable to mugging.” The Midrand Reporter reported on the plight of cyclists in May and highlighted some hotspots where such hijackings occurred. Some of these areas were Kyalami Main Road, Summit Road towards Diepsloot, Carlswald next to the bridge, Northern farms and Irene near Groenvoer Market. Midrand police spokesman Warrant Officer Mmakgomo Semono said it was impossible for police to patrol because cyclists used paths through jungles and patrolling of cyclists was handled by Metro police. Burnett said attempts to draw Metro police’s attention to the matter failed. He said hijackings happened on a weekly basis. “The situation is going to get to a point where cyclists will carry guns and take the law into their own hands.” Five cellphones and five cycles ranging in value from R40 000 to R50 000 each were stolen.

The name Robyn Schmidt is also linked to Building4Gauteng, Basic Building Supplies and Jaycon Building Supplies. Banking details for SA Building Supplies show the account is in the name of N.P Botha, while their invoice gives a business address at 79 Wroxham Road in Paulshof. The Midrand Reporter could not locate this address. Sandton police Warrant Officer Justice Malatjie was handling Pedder’s case, but said it was proving very difficult. “She is nowhere to be found. We are waiting for her bank to provide us with more information, and maybe we can get a legitimate address from them.” Malatjie explained they had attempted to set up a meeting with Schmidt, acting as potential clients, but she never pitched up. Van Vuuren, who made a case with the Sandton police more than a year ago, said the police had more than enough time to investigate. The Midrand Reporter attempted to get in touch with SA Building Supplies on the number provided on their invoice. A woman answered the call but immediately hung up when we identified ourselves. A message was left requesting that the company respond to the allegations but she failed to do so. An e-mail was sent to their address, but no response had been received. The Midrand Reporter’s investigations continue.

NEXT time you are in the market for building materials, think twice before making your choice of supplier. A number of companies run by the same individuals are scamming people across the northern suburbs of Joburg, baiting clients to pay huge deposits for overly cheap building materials which are never delivered, and the funds never returned. The Midrand Reporter is in touch with a number of furious residents who have been put out of pocket by the following companies, all suspected to be linked: SA Building Supplies, Building4Gauteng, Basic Building Supplies, Building Matters and Jaycon Building Supplies. Following the Midrand Reporter’s investigations, these names came up throughout the different cases: Robyn Schmidt, Pam Rennie, Anne Bradford, Robyn Jenkins, Natalie Davies and Robyn Davies – all thought to be aliases of the same people involved in the scam. Cherise Pedder explained they paid a deposit of about R17 000 to Pam Rennie of SA Building Supplies for building materials for the construction of their new home. “After we paid the money, we never heard from her again. She sounded so genuine and knowledgeable, we never suspected this.” Pedder persisted in getting back in touch with Rennie when Schmidt came into the picture, claiming to be Rennie’s associate. “She told me Pam’s son Connor was critically injured in a soccer match and was admitted to Milpark Hospital, and she could not see to the delivery. “I later phoned the hospital, and they said nobody with that name had been admitted.” Schmidt did nothing about delivering materials or refunding the family’s money. Karolynn van Vuuren, Annette Primo and Karin Jensen were scammed in the same fashion. “When my materials didn’t arrive, Rennie said their driver had died and her husband had been in a car accident.” Primo told the Midrand Reporter She lost R16 700. Van Vuuren dealt with a Davies of Building4Gauteng about a year ago, who said their truck driver had been hijacked, her boss shot and his wife badly beaten up. Her materials have still not been delivered. A search on consumer watchdog website www.hellopeter.com revealed numerous other

This follows a declaration by the City of Johannesburg that Vorna Valley is an agricultural site, while residents argue that it is a residential area. Residents accused the city council of incompetence and costing them a huge sum of money. It is reported that prior to the introduction of the Property Act in 2008, the area was residential. Vorna Valley Ratepayers Association chairman Leverne Young said before 2008 former residents sold their properties without rezoning them because everything was in order. “But now many residents are shocked to discover they have to rezone their houses to residential. And rezoning cost R30 000. We appeal to
residents whose billing statements have the letter A (agricultural) to come forward. The impact is that on an agricultural holding we don’t get the rates discount we get for residential stands. We revealed that it was the municipality’s error to register Vorna Valley as an agricultural zone,” said Young. Ward 92 councillor Annette Deppe said most of the residents who wanted to sell their property from 2008 were still trapped because they didn’t have money to rezone. “We will be holding a public meeting soon to address the issue. We advise residents who are entangled in this dilemma to report to the Ratepayers Association chairman’s office,” said Deppe. City of Johannesburg spokesman Nthatise Modingoane said Vorna Valley was zoned ‘agricultural’ from its establishment. “We are not sure why residents have to rezone to sell their properties, they should be sold as agricultural sites,” said Modingoane Details: Leverne Young 078-221-4919

And they love our stadiums, although most have slammed our non-existent public transport, as expected. An American advertising executive advised the South African government to continue working towards improving public transport with projects such as Gautrain and Rea Vaya even after the World Cup has ended because ‘what we have seen on your roads is a disaster’. Hopefully, Transport Minister Sbu Ndebele is taking notes.

This initiative by the United Nations Environment Programme (Unep), Global Environment Facility (GEF) and South African Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) aims to encourage tourists to contribute to sustainable tourism by making responsible choices. The ‘passport’ is a booklet filled with information on travel that respects the environment and positively affects economic development. It will be available at airports, hotels and tourist centres countrywide. This awareness drive launched in Illovo is part of a project called Reducing the Carbon Footprint of Major Sporting Events: Fifa 2010 and the Green Goal. One of the criteria for choosing host countries was how well they fulfilled this goal. With $1 million in GEF funding, 12 billboards, 60 traffic lights and 78 street lights near stadiums in six host cities have been converted to solar power. Another project enables travellers to calculate and offset their carbon emissions against one of five projects that include soil composting, wind energy and solar cookers.
The Green Passport will help World Cup tourists contribute to sustainable tourism. In addition 11 visiting football teams (Algeria, Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Uruguay, Italy, Switzerland, Argentina, England, Republic of Korea and Serbia) have committed to offset their emissions. Unep hoped more would follow suit. “Hosting the 2010 Fifa World Cup™ must leave a legacy, and we want it to be a green legacy,” said Andre Share, DEA chief executive officer. We hope travellers take the knowledge home and implement environmentally friendly changes in their lives. “The message is simple yet powerful – through small lifestyle adjustments we can all score goals for our planet,” said Unep’s Satinder Bindra. Fundraiser for SPCA THE Carlswald Lifestyle Centre(CLC) will hold a fun day to raise funds for the Midrand SPCA on Saturday 26 June. The fundraiser will start at 10 am until 2pm. The event is in response to an appeal published in the Midrand Reporter a few weeks ago. A collection point will be set up at the Carlswald Superspar for food, blankets and bowls. The Twenty+ Hells Angels Bikers are expected to turn out for the event. AJ Projects has sponsored a jumping castle and Edenvale Snake City will be there with various snakes for photo opportunities. SNOW may be on the way to Johannesburg, according to the ‘weather man’. The South African weather service has alerted residents to bring out the woollies and winter warmers as bitterly cold weather including a high chance of snow has been predicted for the city in coming weeks. Snow has already fallen in parts of Gauteng creating white powdery sheets over fields in certain areas. Last week parts of William Nicol Drive just before Sandton Drive were closed by Metro police because of ice on the road. “In the coming weeks we will experience more black frost and sleet during the nights with the days bringing clear skies. “According to weather patterns, snow for Joburg is possible, but at this moment only during the latter part of the night,â€? said senior forecaster Jacqueline Riet. Temperatures plummeted to sub-zero last week with the lowest recorded at -5ÂşC. Some residents woke up to layers of sleet on car windshields, with forecasters believing this was just the beginning of cold weather. “The weather will stabilise for the next seven days at a minimum of 0ÂşC at night and a maximum of 15Âş to 18ÂşC during the day,â€? Riet said.

Da Gama’s election followed the resignation of Victor Penning in May. Penning is now a councillor. According to the DA, Penning resigned to make way for a smooth transition into the upcoming local government elections. “I am pleased with the arrangements and excited about the new team of leaders,” said Penning. “They are a good team of youngsters with new ideas for the party.” Da Gama, serving as the DA’s chairman of the Sandton north/Midrand constituency, promised to take the party to greater heights, and work closely with the ANC in the interests of Joburg citizens. “I intend to devote my time and energy to ensure that we make the vision of gaining control of Johannesburg a reality. VUVUZELAS were cheerfully blown to welcome the festivities around the 2010 Fifa World Cup ™, but pet owners dreaded the effect that the controversial instrument would have on their pets. Dr Claire Considine of Sandringham veterinary centre reported treating several pets petrified by the loud blowing of vuvuzelas. “We have had complaints from pet owners whose pets hid under beds and behind couches. For such cases, we prescribed sedatives to help them cope. “There are also effective homeopathic remedies available that may be bought across the counter at most surgeries to help keep your pet calm,” said Considine. Sandton SPCA spokesman, Candice Segal said, “It is well known that dogs and cats have hearing that is superior to that of humans. Raise funds with used foil IN AN effort to raise funds, the community support centre Lehae La Tshepo appeals for donations of aluminium foil. The Foil Ball Recycling campaign, which will run until 31 July, aims to raise funds for Lehae La Tshepo and simultaneously create an awareness of recycling. Lehae La Tshepo, meaning home of hope, is a non-profit organisation offering counselling to victims of HIV/Aids and trauma. It provides food parcels for the needy and offers skills development to empower parents.
The fundraising initiative is also an attempt to break the SA Book of Records for the most recycled aluminium foil collected. The current record stands at 732kg and the aim is to collect 750kg. Anyone able to assist may donate their used foil at the deposit point, a giant soccer ball adjacent to the Woolworths store at The Brightwater Commons. CITY Power unveiled its ‘secret project’ at its head office in Booysens when it showed video footage of the Nelson Mandela Bridge at night. Silas Zimu, managing director at City Power said the renovations and decorations at the bridge were a legacy project. “The Nelson Mandela Bridge will be a colourful monument throughout the 2010 Fifa World Cup™ and beyond. “This project aims to honour Madiba whom everyone has come to know as an icon. It’s one of the beautification projects the city has embarked on and is a tourist destination,” said Zimu. The bridge would continue to display different colours every day. The utility launched an online Fault Logging Facility which customers could use to log faults directly from City Power website or via WAP from their cellphones. Fans stranded NIE CELE citybeat@caxton.co.za EMPLOYEES of the Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) downed tools and left fans stranded after a 2010 Fifa World Cup™ match at Soccer City. The strike happened barely a week after control of the BRT was handed over to Clidet 957, established by former taxi bosses who surrendered 585 taxis to city council in exchange for shares in the company. Tahir Sema, South African Municipality Workers Union (Samwu) spokesman, said bus drivers and staff downed tools because they were
angered by adjusted shifts aimed at accommodating fans at World Cup matches in Johannesburg. “The employer took a unilateral decision without consulting the unions and employees. This resulted in a surprise strike organised by the employees after they were angered by the decision. However we have since deployed representatives to the negotiation table to iron out the issue amicably.’’ Mayor Amos Masondo had hailed the handover of phase 1A that operated between Soweto and the city centre as an historic milestone. He said BRT was 100 percent owned by Clidet 957 and praised stakeholders
involved in the lengthy negotiations. “Without your commitment this transformation in public transport would have been impossible,’’ Masondo said. But this newspaper has reliably learnt of another dispute involving the union and the company that is waiting to be heard in the labour court. This was sparked by a complaint by Clidet 957, which is a member of the South African Road Passenger Bargaining Council. Clidet 957 is questioning Samwu’s right to represent the BRT employees even though they were no longer in the employ of the municipality.
A ONE-DAY labour dispute by drivers of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Rea Vaya has peeved the Democratic Alliance. Fans attending a 2010 Fifa World Cup™ match between Holland and Denmark were left stranded afterwards due to strike action that saw the bus drivers down tools for the day. According to Nico de Jager, DA spokesman on transport in Johannesburg, the behaviour is equivalent to national sabotage in the face of the country’s ability to host a successful World Cup. “The city council should treat this behaviour as unforgivable and, should this happen again, saboteurs should be dismissed without trial or hearing. An event of this size cannot be held to ransom by ill-conceived games.” he said. De Jager also pointed out that the DA acknowledged that transport arrangements had been well managed thus far, with a large number of customers satisfied with the park and ride facilities. However, he said that mishaps like the strike could be extremely damaging to the image of the city. He was outraged that officials who knew about the strike failed to inform spectators. Instead, spectators were diverted to train stations, with radio reports reassuring them that

Poor service delivery and crime remain a problem Hollier Galt writes; EVERYONE is so happy with this great 2010 Fifa World Cup™ but nothing has been done to improve our lives. Drunks still race down Harry Galaun Road off the N1 highway every night after pubs are closed and mow down our walls, trees, lights etc. I’ve taken photos with registration numbers and try and get our police to open cases with great difficulty. Metro cops seldom come out when called. Our councillor, Annette Deppe managed to get the Joburg Roads Agency to come out and put up signs which got knocked down the same day. The best they can do is pick up number plates and try and get the drivers to pay to replace trees, traffic lights, lamp poles. We are told not to take the law into our own hands to put up our own speed humps but businesses sell buckets of tar so locals can fix their own
potholes. Our house was broken into every year for the 10 years until we put up our own security boom. As far as crime goes we still have roughly the same murder rate as the United States with far fewer people. So our chances of getting robbed and murdered are five or six times greater. Foreign car guards are very polite and helpful. Local guards are rude and arrogant. One even started banging on my car’s back window for his money after I’d stopped at a shopping centre. Our guys think they’re entitled to everything. They keep striking and destroying everything. Wonder how long our wonderful stadiums will last? Do we have money for upkeep? I know everyone should be proud to be South African right now but I think we should also be realistic. Some of us are still trying to work to keep the country going.
Support sport at school or leave Duggie Moodley writes; I AM shocked and dismayed at your article, Red carded (week ending 11 June). It is no surprise that the City of Johannesburg’s Department of Development Planning and Urban Management has taken 18 years to realise that Midrand high school was built on an agricultural holding. When one takes into account all illegal activities that take place in and around Johannesburg and no serious attempts are being made to close down such activities. It seems that when legitimate activities are held at the school the magic wand is waved by Kobus Potgieter who declares such activities illegal. Midrand high school must be complimented for its community involvement in allowing sporting activities and other meetings like Midrand senior citizens who meet every
Sunday at no charge. The absence of a community centre in Midrand adds to the plight of the community. When drugs and other illegal activities are rampant the use of sporting facilities helps to quell drug abuse and crime. To use law in its technicality to appease a neighbour who motivated the investigation just shows how inconsiderate one can be. Neighbours who cannot see and enjoy sporting activities on school premises should leave the area and look for accommodation in some farmlands. Potgieter should allow the school a special dispensation to hold sporting and other activities over the weekends until the matter is resolved. Midrand is no longer an agricultural area but one of the fastest growing industrial and residential areas.
Who will pocket dog licence fees? Margaret O’Carroll writes; I WONDER what will happen if no one pays these ridiculous dog licence fees. It would be nice to know what the money is going to be used for. Or will it go into a bottomless pit or someone’s pocket? I know that nothing good will come of this. Not many people really worry what the neighbour’s dogs are doing. It seems that it is the barking of dogs that upset the municipality sufficiently to want some
money to stop it. Will they ever have anyone capable of sorting this out? I doubt it. One may of course have a real Mother Grundy for a neighbour who moans if anyone sneezes too loudly. There has been no word from the animal shelters. Will they put all the dogs and cats to sleep if there are no homes for those that are handed in as not wanted? No one who loves animals will be allowed to take them into a loving home.

Vimbi wins Lory Park Zoo invites children YAMKELA Vimbi, a pupil at Tsosoloso Ya Afrika secondary school in Ebony Park could not hold back his tears after winning a bursary in the poetry competition last week. Yamkela walked away with a bursary worth R5 375 from MSC College. The bursary includes textbooks, tuition and assessment fees. Midrand MSC College spokesman, Musa Thomo said the school was honoured to contribute to skills development. “We share the government’s vision in skills development which is the reason behind what MSC College Midrand is doing to uplift future leaders. When we see a young person’s dream come true, like Yamkela’s, we feel we have changed someone’s life, and that is reason enough for us to continue doing what we are doing.” The competition has been running for the past five months around Tembisa and Ivory Park areas. “We visited eight schools in total and managed to listen to 72 pupils from different schools reciting poems.” Thomo said the competition was open to grade 10, 11 and 12 pupils competing for an MSC College bursary worth R5 375. “This was our third successive
MSC College bursary winner, Yamkela Vimbi from Tsosoloso secondary school. year running the competition, and this year was slightly different as we were not just sourcing talent, we were also looking at instilling leadership skills among pupils.” Maphutha secondary school from Mayibuye township snatched the R1000 prize for being the best organised and most committed school. A garden bird workshop to create awareness about different types of birds found in home gardens and birds of the sky will be conducted. Zoo manager Althea Guinsberg said kids would help feed the raptors and get a chance to have a close encounter with the spotted eagle owls. “The enrichment workshop by one of the zoo keepers keeps the animals busy and creates a natural environment. The kids will assist with making ice lollies for the primates, seed and mud surprises for the birds and boxes filled with scents and treats for the cats.” “Children will learn about the cats of the jungle - big and small - and their endangered status. Sun still shines after a decade THE Sunflower Fund celebrated memories and milestones in style at its 10th anniversary ball at Montecasino. The ballroom was decorated in black, cream and gold, with golden sunflowers adorning the foyer and ballroom tables – a fitting tribute to Chris Corlett, who passed away 10 years ago but was a great source of inspiration behind the fund’s formation. Guests mingled to the sounds of the Vienna String Duo while admiring the beautifully framed patient photograph gallery. Each photo told the story of a patient - a survivor, or someone currently searching for a donor, or someone who had lost the battle with leukaemia. The auction raised R156 000 for the fund,
with some special items creating a bidding frenzy. The framed Sunflowers of Hope print received a record bid of R25 000. The original was painted by Corlett while in isolation after a bone marrow transplant. Jose Mortagua successfully made a bid for a yellow and white gold bracelet which he immediately placed on his wife Fatima’s arm. Fatima has leukaemia and is searching for her lifesaving donor. The evening was also a fitting tribute to Sunflower Fund chief executive officer Tina Botha and the work she began years ago while searching for a bone marrow stem cell donor for her son Corlett.

World at their feet ZANELE SABELA zaneles@caxton.co.za “IT FELT like I was standing on top of the world,” said David da Silva of his victory at the Men’s Artistic Gymnastics Northzone competition at the Linder Auditorium at Wits University Education Campus. David (11) came first in Level 1-3 and has been chosen to compete at the National Championships in September this year. His twin brother, Joshua, came in sixth on that occasion but was first overall in Level 2 at the Central Gauteng Regional Competition on 14 May. The twins have been doing gymnastics for two years at Visions Gymnastics at the Hillfox Centre. Their proud mother Kim da Silva said she enrolled them because she wanted them to exercise and develop their gross motor skills. She said she also chose the sport becaus e the twins were home schooled independent of the traditional school system. She chose to home school her boys because she wanted to be more involved in their education. “They are doing very well. We had them assessed and they are on par with their peers,” she explained. A registered nurse and midwife, Da Silva stopped working when the twins were born. Her husband Greg da Silva runs his photographic business from home. “We are a close-knit family.” She said the boys were not missing out on social interaction as they had many friends who attended regular school and the family belonged to four different home school groups. “Once a month we go on an educational outing with one of the groups and visit places like Scibono and the Coca Cola factory. We go out socially at least once a week,” she explained. David and Joshua attend gymnastics three times a week. Their mother said she had seen a difference in their self-esteem and discipline since they started. “It has also improved their ability to concentrate.” Joshua said he was amazed when he won at the Central Gauteng meet. “I never thought I would win. Rider jumps the highest WHILE the Gauteng Horse Society team didn’t fare well due to various mishaps, young Tamsin Daniels made up for it by winning the SA Pony Rider Eventing Championship 2010 on her trusted pony, Kavalier. Tamsin started on an excellent dressage score of 54.4 lying second at that stage after fellow Gauteng rider Mikaela Nicolau went on to unfortunately be eliminated in the crosscountry phase. Tamsin had a beautiful clear round in the country, putting her into first place which was where she stayed in spite of four penalties in the show jumping phase. The SA Pony Rider Team trophy went to Western Province and Eastern Cape in a tie, with KwaZulu Natal third and Gauteng fourth.

The Fourways Society for Medieval Combat Studies (FSMCS) has become a regular sight at the little park on Alexander Road in Douglasdale where they train twice a week. In fact, club members are so used to their outdoor setting it’s commonplace to hear ‘dog!’ yelled in between other commands, with the squires freezing as a beagle runs over to investigate. The drills continue with blunt, steel longswords wielded up and down the field. Masterat-Arms Hein Jooste’s young son Jeremy joins
the group, wielding a lighter, padded sword while his wife Elizabeth looks on. The FSMCS devotes itself to the study of medieval combat, particularly the style of medieval German masters. Focusing on the long-sword eventually leads to the study of other weapons such as the sword-and-buckler, pole-axe and mace. Members come from across the city and are attracted because of their love of history or to reconnect with their heritage. Jooste, who makes his own swords and armour, explained there were two types of combat. Un-armoured combat sees wellpadded combatants using padded swords in contrast to the steel wielded by combatants wearing suits of armour weighing up to 45kg in the armoured combat section.
Elizabeth explained the attraction. “It’s that feel when steel hits steel. At first it’s a little jarring, but then the adrenaline kicks in and you just go for it.” And don’t think it’s limited to the combat arena. Hein said, “If someone breaks into your house and you have a mop handy, you can use the same principles to defend yourself as if it was a sword.” Did you know? Holiday sport for pupils WITH schools closed for the duration of the World Cup, young hands become idle. But the Urban X skate park in Sunninghill has big plans to keep boredom at bay until the end of July, while giving parents peace of mind knowing their children are keeping active in a safe, friendly environment. Ismail has plenty of balls ABED AHMED abed@caxton.co.za PROLIFIC Caxton Cobras striker Ishaq Ismail’s love for soccer goes far beyond the pitch. Marlboro’s Ismail has since 2004 collected over 200 soccer balls, a
collection that continues to grow. He believes it to be the biggest soccer ball collection in southern Africa. His collection is made up of every Fifa World Cup™ match ball since the tournament in Mexico in 1970, and every UEFA Champions League match and final ball since
the introduction of the star ball. He also has official league, team, training and skill soccer balls he bought from Fifa, UEFA, soccer clubs and federations, and other collectors around the world. With assistance from his nephews Aadil and Uzair, Ismail ensures the balls
are well displayed, but space will always remain an issue for the evergrowing collection. With this World Cup final in Joburg, Ismail is hoping to get his hands on the official Jo’bulani final match ball which will be used on July 11. “To get my hands on the
final ball with the date and country names printed on it will indeed be a dream come true.” The colourful and unique collection remains his pride and joy and Ismail will now look at space alternatives to accomodate his expensive hobby.
