Celebrating the Good Life • February 23 - March 11, 2010 • Vol 15 no 10 • FREE Look out for the wonderful Alice in Wonderland! Director Tim Burton is a master of the fantastical and in the epic 3D adventure Alice in Wonderland, he adds his own wacky, imaginative twist to Lewis Carroll’s classic tale. Now 19 years old, Alice returns to the whimsical world she once found down the rabbit hole, reuniting with old friends such as the White Rabbit, Tweedledee and Tweedledum, the Cheshire Cat and The Mad Hatter, of course. This time round though, she’s on a mission to find her true destiny and end the Red Queen’s reign of terror. The film stars Burton regulars - and favourites - Johnny Depp (who is always superb) and Helena Bonham-Carter, as well as Anne Hathaway and Crispin Glover. If you’re a fan of his work, which includes Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands and The Nightmare Before Christmas, you can expect to love it! (Opens March 5) For more big screen releases, turn to the View page inside...

Autumn undies

Succulent Café

It seems ridiculous to be contemplating our autumn wardrobes while the sun still beats down, but as the shops are already filled with next season’s ranges, why not stock up? Start from the inside out with the new Women’secret lingerie range. It’s fabulously feminine without any frou-frou frills or over-the-top lace. Instead, you’ll find plaids, polka-dots and stripes; red, navy blue, fuchsia, grey… Items are delicate and include the casual and comfortable, the sexy and show-off. Check out the Botanical collection for loose garments for home, and the Shopping Girl range for trendy underwear sets. At Women’secret, Hyde Park Shopping. Details: 011-325-4992 or www. womensecret.com.

Bright light Recently opened in Craighall Park, the Light Shed is the place to go for decorative lighting for your home. The shop is tiny, its selection small but each handpicked light is stylish and definitely desirable. We love the galvanized metal lanterns, but you’ll also find great nickel-plated lights in contemporary designs. The floor space is filled with pretty homeware and gift items - think rattan furniture, wooden cheese boards made from wine barrel lids, room diffusers and divine Juliette at Home fragranced kitchen candles. Corner Westminster Drive and Portland Avenue. Details: 011-325-6093.

Juicy finds at Succulent Cafe For a little bit of everything, including cute décor accessories and gifts, such as scatter cushions, picture frames, bags and even a hot stone massage kit for two, pop into Succulent Café in Northcliff. The shop stocks a variety of desirable goodies and has a lovely coffee shop and deli section attached.

Stay for a light breakfast or lunch (think salads, sandwiches and yummy pizzas baked in an oh-so-stylish pink mosaic pizza oven) or order dinnerto-go from the deli. The food is delish! At the L’Corro Centre. Details: 011-022-7245 or www.succulentcafe. co.za

Cuddle up on the couch... Fab furniture store Coricraft has launched a new collection of fabrics for its slip cover and upholstered couches, as well as its ottomans. Our favourites include the rich, luxurious velvet in two colours; the linen shot with gold thread for understated bling; and the matching metallic leathers. There’s also a stylish new two tone fabric and the bold and bright Aswan range. Go in, play around … you can mix and match colour and texture to suit your taste. Details: 086-111-4779 or click on www.coricraft.co.za. One lucky Leisure Options reader can win a Barcelona two-seater sofa in the new two tone fabric, valued at R4 495. Simply SMS LOCCoricraft and your details to 34274 before Monday March 1. SMSs cost R2. Good luck!

Natural hair straightening at Tanaz So you’re tired of your curls and want a sleek, smooth hairdo for autumn? The Keratin Hair Treatment, also known as the Brazilian Straightening System or, even better, the Chocolate Brazilian Blowout, is now available at Tanaz, Hair Beauty and Nails. Developed in Brazil, the treatment uses the protein keratin to straighten hair naturally, as opposed to harsh chemicals which work by altering the shape and structure of internal hair bonds. How it works... The first step in the process is to recondition hair and restore its healthy glow. This involves washing hair in a special salt-free clarifying shampoo which is left on for up to 20 minutes. Next, hair is blown dry, and the keratin solution applied and allowed to soak into the hair for another 20 minutes. Each section of hair is then sealed and straightened up to five times using hot irons to infuse the keratin solution into the hair (this traps moisture, hydrates the hair and creates a glossy finish). The entire process takes anywhere from 90 minutes to four hours, depending on the length and thickness of your hair. Results are not permanent, but last from two to five months, gradually fading with each wash. Benefits... • Besides being chemical free, the keratin treatment smooths the cuticles covering the hair shaft ... basically, this means it banishes frizz and controls unruly locks. • It makes hair easier to style (and really does cut down on styling time by as much as 70 per cent!). • Your hair is thickened and strengthened, but the internal structure of the hair is not changed. • After care is simple. There is no major maintenance required - just avoid washing your hair for 48 hours post treatment (so make sure you don’t do it the day before a hot date!); afterwards you do need to use a sodium chloride-free shampoo and conditioner. Easy! Priced from R800 to R2 000 depending on the length and condition of your hair. For more information or to book your appointment, call Tanaz on 011-7862976 or visit www.tanaz.net

David Elliot Cohen and John D Battersby have produced a fascinating hardcover book in Nelson Mandela A Life in Photographs. The book documents momentous changes through 117 photographs of Mandela. There are rare black and white photos taken as early as the mid-40s, and glorious colour images of his triumphant release. It also presents six of Mandela’s most important speeches, including ‘An Ideal for Which I am Prepared to Die’. With insightful text and captions, this is an inspiring book. Sterling, R220. In the Words of Nelson Mandela, a little Penguin Pocket Book, Jennifer Crwys-Williams has put together a compilation of comments by Madiba - from humanity to racism, oppression to freedom, friendship to negotiation. Hugely inspirational, you’ll dip into it again and again. R60. Crammed with images, specially commissioned interviews and contributions from friends and associates ranging from Thabo Mbeki to Bill Clinton, Mandela: The Authorised Portrait is a truly incredible book that has been updated to include Mandela’s 90th birthday celebrations. R229 (soft cover).

Turn up the sound and groove on

Also worth listening to ...

The Parlotones rock We’re a tad tired of the Idols franchise so admit we took ages to actually listen to Adam Lambert’s debut For Your Entertainment (he was runner-up in the 2009 American competition). But once we did, we were hugely, pleasantly surprised! Produced by the likes of Linda Perry and Ryan Tedder, and boasting writing collaborations with artists such as Pink and Lady Gaga, it’s a vibrant, theatrical, fun pop album that combines elements of new wave, disco and modern R&B as well. Standout tracks include the stylish Music Again and Fever.

Lady Gaga’s The Fame Monster is a double CD collection that’s intended to bridge the gap between the pop phenomenon’s first and second full-length albums. Disc one is an eight track EP of all new material, including fab single Bad Romance and Telephone, a duet with Beyoncé, while disc two is essentially a re-release of The Fame, her debut album that spawned the smash hits Paparazzi and Poker Face. It’s a cool combination that shows off Lady Gaga’s edgy, over-the-top style and hints at great things to come.

Ever since its release late last year, we’ve been playing the Parlotones’ latest album, Stardust Galaxies everywhere! And we were right to, it seems... The album went gold within a week of launching (a massive feat for a local band) and one of its songs, second single Life’s Design, was snapped up by KFC for its current TV campaign. If you’ve yet to discover the album, do so quickly. It’s an uplifting gem: full of Kahn Morbee’s distinctive vocals, soaring choruses, fresh lyrics and funky pop-rock vibes. Push Me To The Floor is its biggest hit to date but Remember When and album closer Stardust Galaxies, a duet with Freshlyground’s Zolani Mahola, are also great! We’ve got five Parlotones Snackbox hampers to give away, consisting of a signed copy of the new album and a R50 KFC voucher. To enter, SMS LOCParlotones and your details to 34274 before Monday March 1. SMSs cost R2.

Four years after her stellar debut, English singersongwriter Corinne Bailey Rae has released The Sea, an exquisite, emotional album heavily influenced by the death of her husband two years ago. That’s not to say its songs are morbid however; yes, there are some that are sad, wistful and very moving (title track The Sea is one). But others, such as The Blackest Lily and Feels Like The First Time are more upbeat and/or hopeful. If you’re in the mood for a classy blend of jazz, rock and neo-soul with plenty of heart, this is it.

If her debut album A Fool in Love is any indication, Florence Rawlings, a 20-year-old soul singer from south London, is poised for the big time. Discovered at the age of 13 by Dramatico label boss, Mike Batt (who also found Katie Melua), her vocals are rich and throaty; her style a classy mix of Motowninspired soul and rhythm and blues. Turn up the volume on first single Hard To Get and the moving Love Can Be A Battlefield. It’s very cool!

On DVD Look out for Bon Jovi Live at Madison Square Gardens which was filmed in 2008 and features 25 songs drawn from the still-hot New Jersey rockers’ then 25-year-long career. Think Living on a Prayer, Always, Bed of Roses, Blood on Blood and more!

Tune in... Tired of hearing the same old, same old on radio? Then turn your dial to 93.8FM Midrand Stereo, a small community-based radio station that has breathed new life into the old Radio Today’s Rockfest. Every night from 8pm until late, DJs with diverse tastes choose non-playlisted music to entertain listeners. So far, we’ve lapped up 70s disco and funk, classic rock and metal, blues and jazz, and have discovered several little-known, but truly fantastic bands. It’s definitely worth a listen! See www.rockfest.co.za for details.

Grammy Nominees 2010 is an easy crowd pleaser, filled with recent radio hits from a diverse selection of artists such as Pink (Sober), The Black Eyed Peas (I Gotta Feeling), Kings of Leon (Use Somebody) and Coldplay (Life in Technicolor ii). It’s a fun-for-now mix of pop, rock and R&B that will likely get tired as new songs take over the airwaves.
