2025 Lucas Cattle Company Spring Bull Sale

Page 1

Charlotte and I would like to welcome you to our 2025 Spring Performance Bull & Female Online Sale. Lucas Cattle Company has been in the Simmental cattle business for almost 3 decades and has had private treaty bull sales for 24 years and now look forward to offering the same high-quality set of cattle to you online via DVAuction. We are very proud of the powerful Simmental and SimAngus bulls and commercial bred females that we are presenting to you for your consideration. We have also decided to expand our offering to include seedstock heifers. We are going to offer the ‘Elite Heifer Showcase’ where we will offer the opportunity to select choice of a group of 7 highly selected heifers.

Lucas Cattle Company continues to ratchet up our genomic efforts by establishing a relationship with Allied Genetic Resources to expand our embryo transfer program along with the selective addition of some of the most powerful cow families in the Simmental breed. These include the breed changing WS MS SUGAR C4 and SSF BLK LOUISE Y534 along with recently adding ADV MS Genesis J1017 and some additional young donors. It has also been a very somber year for Lucas Cattle Company as we have lost WS MS SUGAR C4 recently, and SSF BLK LOUISE Y534 in the fall of 2024.

Both Sugar and Louise were very productive while at Lucas Cattle Company and while we will miss their continued direct contribution to our operation, we have been blessed to produce many offspring from these two cornerstone females and will continue to produce more for the next season or two. These two foundation females have made a significant impact to the direction and trajectory of Lucas Cattle Company and their impact will be felt for years to come. We are committed to make significant enhancements in our genetic cow power to continue the Sugar and Louise legacies to serve commercial, purebred and seedstock cattlemen. We look forward to being a sought-after partner in the Simmental cattle business to help our customers be the most successful they can be with their operations.

We sincerely thank our crew at Lucas Cattle Company for making our operation successful. Running a high impact seedstock operation has a lot of moving pieces and requires a tremendous amount of organization and attention to detail. Jeff, Holly, Cleo, Jonathan and Junior champion our efforts and their hard work is very much appreciated.

If you are one of our past private treaty sale customers, then welcome back and if this is your first visit to Lucas Cattle Company via our online sale then welcome. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our team.

Welcome to Lucas Cattle Company, Forrest Lucas

L SUGAR

The impact SUGAR made on our operation in the short time we have owned her, helped revive the excitement for breeding superior cattle with all the necessary traits to push us forward in an extremely, competitive industry. The daughters we’ve purchased and the calves we have raised so far, will continue her legacy, passing on her superior traits to the next generation. Additionally, the embryos stored as part of our breeding program ensure that her genetic impact will reach even further, helping shape the future of the Simmental breed for years to come. No other female in the rich history of Simmental has made a greater impact on the breed.

CLARITY IS CASH

Today’s industry pays big for heavy fat steers, but your pocketbook demands smaller cows. What to do? The answer is clear, dependable data and the courage to bypass traditional straightbreeding.

Simmental-influenced cows are an average 74 lb. lighter at maturity than Angus-sired counterparts.a

Meanwhile, packers pay $20 to $34 more for SimAngusTM and Simmental-sired steers than English-sired calves.b

Finally, raise efficient cows and high-performance calves. The proof is in the data – and the cash.

Sire-Breed Group, Calf Sex and Year Group on Carcass Traits. Breeds represented in the English-sired group: Angus, Red Angus, South Devon, Hereford and Shorthorn.

What an opportunity to obtain some of the very best genetics out of the most prolific donors the Simmental breed has to offer. We are offering our BEST open heifers who comes from the likes of C4, 18E, Y534 and many more. These females will no doubt combine the figures and phenotype to serve as cornerstone breeding pieces for their new owners. We feel these front-end females all are worthy of embryo production and when we started our venture in intensifying our embryo transform program our vision was to make genetics of this caliber!

ASA QUICK REFERENCE TO EPDS, INDEXES AND $VALUES

EXPECTED PROGENY DIFFERENCES (EPDs): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and -5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units). Key to using EPDs is knowing in what units they are expressed. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPDs, sire A would be expected to sire 15 pounds more weaning weight than sire B. If calving ease was the trait, sire A would be expected to sire 15 percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if sire B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we would expect sire A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. For more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes, visit www.simmental.org.

Listed below are the units in which ASA EPDs are expressed:

ALL-PURPOSE INDEX (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sire scenario.

BACK FAT (BF): Inches of carcass backfat at 475 days.

BIRTH WEIGHT (BW): Pounds of birth weight.

CALVING EASE (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers.

CARCASS WEIGHT (CW): Pounds of carcass weight at 475 days.

DOCILITY (DOC): Percent of offspring receiving a disposition score of 1 (docile).

MATERNAL CALVING EASE (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters.

MILK (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk.

MARBLING (MARB): Carcass marbling score at 475 days.

MATERNAL WEANING WEIGHT (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth.

RIBEYE AREA (REA): Square inches of carcass ribeye at 475 days.

TERMINAL INDEX (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario.

WEANING WEIGHT (WW): Pounds of weaning weight.

YEARLING WEIGHT (YW): Pounds of yearling weight.

YIELD GRADE (YG): Carcass yield grade score at 475 days.

$ INDEXES: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide pieces of the economic puzzle. This is where $ indexes come in. Through well-conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on integrated commercial production. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes: ALL-PURPOSE INDEX (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield.

TERMINAL INDEX (TI): Evaluates sires for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.
