2025 Keller Broken Heart Ranch Heart of the Herd Dispersal

Page 1

DECEMBER 10 1:00 PM at the ranch in Mandan, North Dakota.

We would like to extend a warm welcome and invite you to our upcoming sale. This year marks our first female only sale, where we are offering the entirety of our replacement heifer group along with a select group of elite donor cows.

Some of you may be wondering why we are having this sale, and we want to share a bit of the story behind it. Our family has always been committed to doing what’s best for our customers, our cattle, and the industry we care deeply about. And to be clear that commitment remains unchanged as we hope to continue doing just that for years to come.

While we are excited for other producers to bring these quality females back home into their herds, that’s not the main reason for this sale. The driving reason behind this sale can be summed up in one word: FAMILY

For example, as many of you know, Luke has long been the leader in guiding our breeding program and making genetic selections for the herd. While he continues to have a strong passion for improving cattle and discovering the next great bull or heifer, he’s also at a point in his life where he would much rather spend more time with his two wonderful young children, and wife, Katy. That time spent with family is and always will be the highest priority.

We empathize with all farming and ranching families, as we understand the challenges of balancing work and family life. The demands of ranching often seem to grow with each passing year, and we’ve come to realize that true success isn’t measured in dollars, it’s measured in happiness, health, and the strength of family.

As we look to the future, we are thankful for the blessings this business has brought us and are beginning a transition that will allow the next generation to take on more of the workload and decision-making. Our goal is to allow for a reprieve from the daily pressures associated with ranching and create space for more time spent connecting with family. We will still strive to continue raising quality cattle that we are proud to stand behind.

Most importantly, we want the young children in our family—Iva, Rhett, Tate, and Tegan—to know that they are the most valuable assets to us all. We must never be too busy to teach them how to ride a bike or a horse, or simply be present with them. The children of our family will always have higher value than the index of any cow or bull.

Thank you again for your continued support of our family and our cattle program over the years. We look forward to seeing you at the sale and catching up with you and your families as well.

With gratitude, The Keller Broken Heart Family

Welcome

OUR BREEDING PROGRAM : Bull Selection for Our Herd and Impact on Our Customers

We’d like to provide some background on the genetics built into our cattle that will be offered for sale and explain what we are trying to achieve to help provide profit back to our customers.

The cows in this year’s sale represent a concerted effort that we have been building on. Many years ago, we made a significant change to our breeding program. Having always chosen bulls based on weights and actual performance coupled with phenotype, we decided to do something different. We decided to begin choosing our genetics and make mating decisions based on “profitability.” Sounds like an obvious and oversimplified statement, but there is a lot more to unpack. The change came about after Luke had spent time working for the ASA. He had traveled to numerous operations and had the opportunity to see many kinds of cattle. So many of the cattle seen, were excellent looking cattle. Lots of programs had very respectable cattle with excellent visual conformations. However, not all were created equally. In fact, there was a wide variety of cattle based on their EPD values and especially their Index values. At that point, a decision was made, why not try to buy the cattle that have good numbers and the good phenotype that we continually look for. That conscious decision is what caused us to bring in new genetics to the Keller Broken Heart Ranch. Any cattle purchased from that point on, needed to have both good numbers and good phenotypes.

With that change, another decision was made, we gathered as much information as possible to best improve the numbers of the cattle in our cow herd. We collected mature weights, udder scores, feet scores, retained ownership in all steers, participated in the carcass merit program, DNA tested, and much more. To add confidence to our customers’ purchase, every animal in the sale is backed by a DNA test, a RightMate score, and sibling steer progeny information from cattle that we’ve retained ownership on to slaughter. This began the better part of a decade ago and it’s been a long and not always easy process, but we have remained committed to the principle of selecting for profitability.

The first thing we saw change, was the profitability on our steers which has consistently risen year after year. We know that will impact our customers own increased steer profitability as well. The growth has consistently stayed, with excellent conversion rates and carcass weights which are acceptable. Last year we had a load that averaged 4.7#s ADG. Every year there is only a few YG 4’s in the entire group with the majority grading 2s and 3s. The key has been marbling. Every year more and more cattle are grading premium levels of choice and prime. The premiums have substantially increased with every passing year which has been the driver in our steers’ profitability. This past year 35% graded prime and over 80% graded CAB or better.

We know the most important goal for most of our customers is profitability. The main decision to select for profit, boils down to paying attention to two numbers, API and TI. They were the key numbers we used to make substantial changes in our herd. They are economic indexes which put a dollar value on every single economically relevant trait based on USDA MARC data and other market analysis information. API (All Purpose Index), is an all-encompassing index that assigns a dollar value to both maternal and terminal measurable traits and compiles it into one number. TI (Terminal Index), is a terminally focused index that assigns a dollar value to all measurable terminal traits.

In bull and cow selection, we suggest two things. Decide which index is most important for your situation. Then select a bull that combines that index with the physical build that fits your environment. That’s basically how we go about selecting new herd bulls or semen for AI purposes and any new genetics we acquire. Obviously, if you need a heifer bull, look at CE and BW EPDs along with RightMate ratings or if you know you need to improve specific traits, that’s what the individual EPDs can still be used for. But, we suggest you place some level of emphasis on at least one of the two profit indexes. The cows and heifers in the sale this year optimize both Indexes as one of the best offerings of SimGenetics.

You can buy with confidence from our program. The bulls and cows undergo a hard culling procedure that includes cutting out some very high indexing animals because they fell short on phenotype, and created some extremely powerful steers which lacked actual profitability potential, based on their Indexes. From the first cow in the ring to the last, they all have one major thing in common, attention has been paid to their Profitability potential for you, our customers.

We thank you for your ongoing trust in our program.

FROM THE SALE MANAGER

Welcome to the Keller Broken Heart Ranch female sale. What an opportunity for Simmental breeders and enthusiasts! The KBHR prefix has built a reputation as one of the elite seedstock herds in the business. Every spring breeders from around the country flock to North Dakota to find their next breed leading herd bull and many of the breed leaders have been sold by this program. What has created this success? It is cow power! The Keller family has decided to open the gates and let breeders have a rare opportunity to select from the “Heart of the Herd.” As you look through this offering you will find some of the most elite young cows this program has to offer. Many of these females have been flushed successfully and many are full sibs to some of the most popular herd bulls and donor females in the breed. The group of bred heifers is full of genetic gems. These are the females that they originally planned to keep in the KBHR program but now are offering to the public. Opportunities to add genetics to your program like these do not come along very often.

As we all know we are experiencing record setting prices in all sectors of the cattle industry. With these record prices, now is the time to reinvest in the future of your own programs to continue to build a better product for the future. The females in this offering have the potential to contribute big time genetic advancement to many programs. If you are looking for black, red, maternal, or carcass this offering should have something that meets the needs of your program.

If you have any questions or need assistance on sale day, please reach out to one of us on the Allied team.

Sincerely,

Sells open and ready to flush.

• The opportunity to own a cow like this doesn’t happen very often. She is the representation of why the sale is named “Heart of the Herd” dispersion. She is at the vey core of what this place is. M006 was marked to be our next great donor. She is backed by home run genetics that have no rival in the Simmental breed. The 106Z and Sugar combination is unmatched when it comes to providing can’t miss commercially profitable genetics in an eye appealing package. M006 has the makings of 106Z. She is unassuming, sound, and faultless in her structure. Not a big power cow, but I guarantee she has the makings to raise big powerful bulls. She has been ultra productive at getting flushed as a young heifer, making 21 embryos in her first flush. If we were offering pick of the herd, this would be my pick. The foundational cornerstone of what our program is. We left her open so her new owner would get the opportunity to start replicating her genetic superiority immediately.

• AI bred to TJ SUPREME (4366333). Due to calve 3/27/2026.

• Sugar High was our logical replacement for Sugar. J029 offers an extremely eye appealing phenotype that she transmits to her progeny. Her Essential flush was a home run for maternal goodness with the high selling open heifer going to Werning Cattle from this past spring’s sale. As you look at her daughters in the bred heifer pen, you will grow to love this cow even more. This spring she had a Homelander flush that will make waves when her bulls sell this coming spring. If you are looking for a Sugar replica type of donor, she is Here!

• Sugar Suite is our premier baldy donor. She is the full sister to KBHR Revolution and one of the best phenotype cows in our herd. Her Imperative sons in last years’ sale had incredible power. That flush also resulted in one of our feature open heifers, KBHR Nova, selling to Gibb Farms. Her flush of Keynote calves born this spring are very exciting! She has produced the highest genetic value baldy bull in the database that is going to have a bright future! She also weaned a big brute of a Galaxy son. She is truly a special cow that’s only offered for sale in a dispersion like this!

She is about to put a record 12 bulls into this coming spring’s sale. She has produced the physically and genetically the best red flush we have ever done out of ES Jack Red. Her combination of calving ease, growth, and ribeye is obvious in person and backed up in her genetic values. This cow is very hard to part with. Whoever own’s this cow at the end of the day, will have the best producing red cow in the Simmental breed. She sells open and ready to flush.

KBHR CHARGER Brother to Lot 4.

• This cow caught us sleeping but we finally caught up to what she was able to do this year. She had a tremendous Screenshot heifer calf by her side this year which made it easy to decide to flush her that way. Her first calf was a steer out of Homelander. Do you think that undermines the cow’s value? Heck no! That steer ended up being the most profitable steer in the pen. Not only was he prime, but he had Waygu levels of marbling with the highest marbling score in the pen in the Abundant category of marbling. He also gained tremendously well with one of the top Carcass weights. That’s why we do what we do….make genetic progress with the tools available. Her steer calf was a testament to that. His genetic value was greater than most Simmental bulls sold last year and we learned our lesson on him. Profit Indexes work.

KBHR MS SPRING BLOSSOM J149

• Sells open and ready to flush.

• Spring Blossom is the full sister to KBHR Gunsmoke. Her two Homelander calves have been incredible in the bred heifer pen. Take a look at them and you will see the value in this cow. She is a stone cold fox with beautiful looks and backed it up by weaning a Homelander son as big as her this year. She is highly maternal and productive in her makeup but her marbling and rib eye EPDs puts her in rarified air. She is the kind to make show heifers or herd bulls.

Not only is she beautiful but she backs her beauty with production. She has generated almost half of a million in direct revenue through her progeny. She has produced many past sale toppers and highlights including Gunsmoke, Lady Liberty, Mona Lisa, Revved Up, Pendelton, Hero, and countless more. She has also produced donors within our own herd including her daughter Lot 6. She is a proven can’t miss cow with exceptional foot and udder quality that she stamps on her daughters. She is also the mother to our herd bull, El Dorado, who is the sire of some of the most powerful bred heifers in this sale. • AI bred to KBHR HOMELANDER (3943783). Due to calve 3/18/2026.

• This J025 cow is the perfect example of why I love Cimmaron daughters. The best way to describe them is fault free. She is the epitome of that. Cimmaron has proven to be excellent at making daughters. He improves udder quality, foot longevity, and moderates frame. The daughters are the kind that can consistently produce big powerful calves when mated correctly. The Visionary bull calf she weaned is a shining example of that this year.

14 KBHR K007 MS GOLD

• AI bred to KBHR DAKOTA (4225709). Due to calve 3/23/2026.

• Pasture bred to BRIDLE BIT GALAXY (4211420). Due to calve 4/5/2026.

• Physically, she is a crowd pleaser and a favorite. She has a lot of the good looks that her mother Sugar had. A real beautiful head-neck set tied into an ideal shoulder angle. She has a power cow look to her from the shoulder back. Her first calf was a bit of an oopsie because her full brother cleaned up the heifers that year, but it actually looks really nice! Her Galaxy calf next year should have all kinds of power potential.

MS ESSENTIAL M002

• Lots 34-36 These 3 full sisters are the full sister to our high selling open heifer this past spring to Werning Cattle. They are consistently very good in their phenotype. Home run flush of heifers out of Sugar High, the lot 2 donor cow. Heart of the herd type cows in their future.

KBHR MS ESSENTIAL M038

• Pasture bred to KBHR RESILENT (4387262). Due to calve 4/6/2026.

• She may be my favorite looking bred heifer in the whole group. She is a full sister to lot 12, who produced a tremendous Galaxy bull for her first calf. This is the kind of heifer you could drag around and win National cattle shows with. What’s nice is she also ranks way in the top 1% for API and is the kind of cow that results in profit and productivity to the commercial cow calf industry as well. No hole’s heifer here.

• AI bred to KBHR CHARGER (4104220). Due to calve 3/11/2026. This heifer would be my pick to build a red program around. She is the full sister to our high selling red bull this spring, KBHR Prominent, selling to Westway Farms in Canada. She reminds me a lot of her mother Genome. Very sound structured. Correct and maternal in her design. But I guarantee if you mate her right, you can get the Horsepower to come through just like Prominent displayed so well. Hard to find red cows with this kind of genetic value.

KBHR MS STOCKMARKET M012 Sells as Lot 70. 70

KBHR MS STOCKMARKET M012
