Patea Historical Society AGM Presidents' Report

From the AGM 7.30pm, Tuesday 28 September 2021, at Patea Old Folks Hall. Nau mai ki a koutou katoa, Ladies and Gentlemen I have much pleasure in presenting the 53rd annual Presidents Report of the Patea Historical Society. As I do every year, I’d like to acknowledge the dedicated members of our committee. We do have a lot of fun ‘Preserving & Promoting our Past’, and we all learn so much along the way. Our current Patea Historical Society team is: Jim Baker, Michael Parsons, Dave Crompton, Harvey Gibbs, Rob Groat, Joe Bourke, Roy Hotter, Bronwyn Wattrus & myself. And our patron; Howard Anderson. Roy Hotter has resigned due to moving to Whanganui a couple of months ago but will join us for meetings from time to time it is hoped. We have our committee meetings every 2nd month in our Freezing Works display building, with the butcher’s mannequins and sheep carcasses all around us. We get through a lot of business and then talk until late about the real interesting local history stuff. We are looking for a couple of new members, so do let us know if you’d like to join the committee. In our 54th year the current membership of the society stands at 67 paid members. Our annual accounts have been audited by Hughson & Associates, our honorary auditor. We have moved to xero accounting system, which makes the GST much easier. Jim, Dave and I now pay any bills online too. It requires 2 people to authorise a transaction, so it's secure and works well. The Patea Historical Society supports Aotea Utanganui, our Museum, with two appointed members on the trust, Dave Crompton and Jim Baker. We continue to donate the usual annual operational funding of $3000 per year. I’ll now run through a few things that we were a part of since our last AGM… In October the newly printed Heartland of Aotea books arrived with us. I spoke about these in my last AGM report. Kelvin Day and Caitlin Finnerty made an amazing job of this beautiful book by Ian Church. Lysaght Watt Trust generously contributed with funding this project. We have them for sale here tonight and they can be bought through us or Aotea Utanganui at any time – we post to anywhere in the world. 18 January we hosted the annual Whanganui Summer programme, a full bus of 50 people (led by David Scoullar) to some of the sites in our area. We started the day at Aotea Utanganui (big thanks to Luana and Amber for opening early). Then we went to the old Powerhouse circ 1902 on the coast off Powerhouse Road. Then up to the Patea Dam/Lake Rotorangi for lunch, a walk and a fun and informative talk from Suz Cowley (caretaker). Then headed back to Alton Coronation Hall for afternoon tea and a cuppa served up by Molly Cole. Last stop was to Jim Bakers farm to have a look at the 32 windmills. A very big thank you to Karen Pratt our photographer that day. On Sunday 21 Feb we held a field trip to the site of Otautu Pa (Whenuakura) and Kuranui Pa (near Patea Dam). A big nga mihi to Darren Ngarewa, Ivan Bruce and Te Poihi Campbell for making it such a success. And everyone who came along, over 50 people...and the Kakaramea Pub for a great lunch Sean Trott from Hawera RSA restored all the bronze headstones in the RSA section of the Patea cemetery in March of this year. There are about 160 of these flat to the ground plaques and they all look brand new again now. Sean has done all the South Taranaki cemeteries RSA plaques now I think. Taranaki Anniversary weekend was meant to be the commemorations for the delayed centennial of Patea RSA. This was cancelled due to a mini COVID lockdown. I still got my book printed and have it for sale at $25 each. It details names and stories of soldiers from both wars from Manutahi, Alton, Hurleyville, Kakaramea, Patea and Whenuakura. Luana and Bronwyn put together a special RSA exhibition which is still on show here in the foyer of the museum. Saturday 10 April we had a good gathering at Okato for various historical/heritage groups. We try and do this once a year to catchup with what each other is up to. The week following this was ‘Heritage and family history week’, organized by Hawera Genealogy Society. They had something on every day. The final day was the Patea River Walk lead by Rob Groat. We commemorated ANZAC day around the district, unlike last year, when we were all in lock down with COVID19. Patea RSA made ex-serviceman James Clark a Life member. Alton had an extra large crowd of around 300 people at their 11am service, helped by the fact the Gibbs, Scown, Taylor family had a reunion at Alton the day before. On Saturday 26 June we had an unveiling of the headstones for Sgt Pehimana, his wife Taihurihia, his mother Pikihuia and child Malta, at the Patea cemetery. The family of Sgt Pehimana from Ratana, and the family of Taihurihia from here in Patea were in attendance, over 60 people in all. This is something we have been working on for almost 3 years. The story of Sgt Pehimana is fascinating, he went to WWI with the First Maori contingent on Feb 1915, served at Gallipoli, wounded at Chunk Bair, returned to Patea, then died in November 1918

of influenza, along with 3 members of his family. Veterans affairs will contribute $1000 to the cost of these 2 headstones, Patea Historical have paid the rest. We also had a nice lunch at the Hunter Shaw building afterwards, just as it started to rain. On 14 July the first sod was turned for the new building here at the museum. The contractors started that very afternoon and have been working hard ever since. It will house machinery and more storage for archives. On 11 August Aotea Utanganui released the first in a series of 20 short films - Pouaka Kōrero-Talking Box project. These films are about local people and their part in the history of our area. Mick, Darren, Bronwyn and I feature in some of them. They will be showing in the museum over the next few months. I took 52 people from Delroy Coach Tours on a trip around Patea on 12th August, ending at the Patea Freezing Works Display building. They loved our town and all the history it holds. I must make special mention of Darren Ngarewa for his tireless work researching and recording Pa sites in our district. He has been doing this for many years I know, but in the last year and a half he has been uploading this information onto his FB page ‘a walk around old South Taranaki with a Māori descendant’ and sharing it with the world. These sites are often almost completely forgotten, with only little marks still on the landscape, but Darren has got right on in there with his drone to record what’s left and researched late into the night with old maps etc to find out the stories. We will be working with Darren to get this recorded into a book in the near future, such a valuable resource. Covid has made things a bit difficult again this year. We were meant to have Derek Leask as our ‘Livingston Baker Memorial Speaker’ after this meeting. But bringing him from Wellington to speak to us about his amazing collection and knowledge of maps was not going to work in Covid Level 2. We will aim to do this next year. The Taranaki Heritage Month in October has also been cancelled. We were going to host a Patea Cemetery Tour, something we may do in the summer, as we have been working on the booklet, and it is all so interesting finding out about our past residents. We were meant to have our AGM at the Museum tonight but had to change it do to the spacing issue. We wanted you all to look around the latest exhibition – 150 years of Masonic Lodge in Patea and 100 years of CWI. It’s the last week of it, so if you haven’t seen it, do pop in and have a look before Friday. When I was writing this report up, I thought wow, we did fit a lot in this year. We really appreciate all of you PHS members supporting us by paying your subs, finding us old photos and info, and turning up when we have events, you are all a valuable part of this Society, so thank you for your input. Email me at jacq@dwyer.co.nz for any queries about PHS. Jacq Dwyer, President of Patea Historical Society

Hell. Is it a real place? The Bible is clear on this. Yes! Jesus was the only person to mention Hell. No other writer in the Old or New Testament has spoken about Hell. Yes, there are references like Sheol and Hades mentioned by the prophets. Hell can be viewed several ways. For example, intellectually, most people today have rejected a belief in Hell. A lot of Ministers don’t believe in it. Then on sentimental grounds, they don’t like the idea, full stop! If we allow our ‘feelings’ to control what we believe then frankly, we shall finish up in a jungle or a desert and we shall changes our beliefs constantly. There are things we don’t like, but we cannot shut ourselves off from them either! Then on psychological grounds, on the grounds that it produces fear which is an unhealthy motive and therefore not to be used. It could be argued also that fear can be used positively. Then of course on moral grounds Hell is not fair, it’s unjust for a few sins to hold a person guilty for eternity in hell, the punishment is out of all proportion to the crimes. Philosophically, if there is a hell then God has failed, evil is eternal and therefore God has failed to remove it, or perhaps the best objection is from another point of view: if God is a God of love how could He send anybody to hell. Some people hold to the belief that hell is here on Earth, a self-imposing suffering here and now, you make it and it has nothing to do with God at all. There is one snag here though. There are many people who ought to be in this hell but are not and there are many in it who do not deserve to be. There are so many views that extend beyond death as well, like after a period of punishment God will forgive them, but there is another snag. If man is free to accept or reject God, then God has limited His own freedom to that degree that He forces everyone to come the Heaven then He is not treating them as human beings. It goes on – annihilation, meaning that the wicked will be extinguished altogether and only the righteous will live. All this, quite frankly, reduces considerably the aspect of punishment as extinguishment would be punishment at all. From my “man of God” perspective, if I only accept the things in my Bible that my mind agrees with then I am making myself Lord of the Bible. I have wrestled with hell quite a lot and I must confess that if I allow my logic or emotions to get in the way, then God’s word can be slightly or greatly changed according to my mind-set at the time. I am greatly frightened by the enormity and seriousness of the Bible’s view, all from Jesus, about Hell. Jesus said “I am the way, the truth and the life.” This has got to be believed above and beyond my comprehension, not in a passive, fearful way, but in knowledge of what my Bible tells me, the only accurate source of truth. On scripture Jesus spoke is this: “Do not fear those who can kill the body, but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear Him (God) who can destroy both body and soul in Hell.” I have limited time/space here, so putting all emotions aside and what grey matter I may have, I have got to believe Jesus – full stop! Otherwise my relationship with Him not only today but way into the future could be in jeopardy. Doubts are cloudy issues that need clarifying. One cannot just repeat what others say. You owe it to yourself to find the truth, Jesus! God cannot be true to Himself if he does not convict all wrong-doers. Justice demands attention and will do. A day is swiftly approaching when all mankind will stand before Jesus and then justice will be done. There is no point hoping that it will all be okay once we did. If Jesus is your Lord and Saviour from a free heart choice today then yes, it will be. If not, then according to Jesus, it’s Hell. Hell is a place of punishment for all who choose to ignore Jesus and do their own thing and we are full speed into that now. Everything is beginning to speed up and it’s almost like God wants to get this universe sorted out ASAP. You need to get you future sorted out as well. With special thanks to David Pawson’s Book ‘Life, after life, after death.’

Kia Ora Koutou, It’s great to return to school after lockdown. Our children were very happy to see their teachers and their friends and after two days of art and fun activities we’re back into our routines and have a lot of learning happening! We started term three with an Olympics focus for two weeks. I bet you can all remember learning about the Olympics at school, I certainly do. This finished off with an Olympics afternoon where students were split into four countries and competed in Tabloid Sports. Our theme for this term is “Unplugging Digital Technology”, where we will be exploring the Digital Curriculum through non-digital activities. This involves learning the language of instructions and being able to debug problems that occur when we give the wrong instructions. The Life Education Trust Truck and Harold visited on the 30th July & 2nd August with a focus for the Senior & Middle classes on managing stress and building friendships and the Juniors will have a focus on Resilience. It’s cross country training time again, it rolls around quickly! We’ll continue training for this three times a week.

We continue to maintain our relationships with our Cluster schools - Ngamatapouri, Kai Iwi, Mosston, Westmere, Brunswick and Faith City and teachers have upcoming professional development within the cluster this term and students will be participating in cluster events also, including a speech competition at Faith City, Enviro group to Bushy Park and the Westmere School Cross Country Event. We are very fortunate to work with the great students at Waitotara School. We promote our DRIVE values of Determination, Respect, Initiative, Virtue and Empathy and are proud of how our students strive to achieve these I want to thank our hardworking and dedicated teachers, support staff, BOT, parents and community volunteers for making our school a great place for children to learn. Polly Devane, Principal Years 4, 5 & 6 are learning about sentence structure and performing a play to the juniors who were able to give us different examples of adverbs & adjectives that we could use in our sentence.

Pātea Community Board Meeting

Notes from the meeting on Wednesday 25 Aug 2021 4pm, provided by the Board members. The sixth meeting for the year was held via video conferencing due to Covid level 4 lockdown. Present were: Pātea Community Board members; Jacq, Dianne, Maria, Jo, Rob Northcott (Pātea Ward Councillor), Janine Maruera (Community Development Officer), Phil Nixon (Mayor), Vanessa Bowles (PA), Liam Dagg (Group Manager Environmental Services), Marianne Archibald (Corporate Services Group Manager), Becky Wolland (Policy and Governance Manager), Gordon Campbell (Corporate Services), Darleena Christie (recording meeting), Doug Rosewarne, Michael Clarkson (Community Patrol Officers) Open Forum: Doug Rosewarne began open forum with an update on the Waverley Community Patrol and spoke to their application to the discretionary fund for running expenses for the Patrol, which was partially funded. The Waverley Comm Patrol has 14 members, who are currently unable to patrol due to level 4 lockdown. Pātea Community Board also submitted applications for a new seat at the Whale Bone sculpture and the directional sign at the Pātea Beach Lookout, which were funded. Becky Wolland presented a report of the Representation restructure to include Māori wards. Under the initial proposal the Council would be made up of 13 Councillors and a Mayor. The district would consist of 2 Māori wards with one Councillor in each. Four general wards with two councillors elected from the Eltham-Kaponga ward; two from the Pātea ward; two from the Taranaki Coastal ward; and five councillors from Te Hāwera ward. Feedback has been asked for on the Council website and a final decision will be made on 11 October. Michael Clarkson from Pātea Community Patrol gave us an informative report of the current situation in Patea with crime and related issues. Two vehicles have been stolen recently from Whenuakura, and there have been several burglaries and illegal entries in the Patea area. There is also an air of aggression and bad language on the streets in Patea. A fire was lit in a sofa outside at the Pātea Youth centre recently, fortunately someone was passing by and put it out. Pātea Patrol are unable to Patrol in Level 4 Lockdown. Michael also asked for help with drafting up a constitution for the organisation, the Council will report back to him with some possible options of who can assist here. End of open forum. Marianne Archibald presented a report from Karen Mekalick about the Acquisition and Disposal of unwanted Council owned land. The Pātea Community Board agreed it was a well written report and accepted it for its next stage to the Policy and Strategy meeting. Liam’s report contained update on the current number of resource consents pending at the moment, a good range throughout the district. Two new staff members are lightening the load on processing these. The Cool Stores on Portland Quay have been put on the dangerous building list, due to the rubbish that is being dumped there. Roaming dogs are still an issue. The hillside by the Pātea cemetery has been planted with 5000 native trees, just before lockdown and will be maintained by the Council. It is part of the 1 billion trees government run project. Full minutes of this and all Council meetings can be found on the South Taranaki District Council Website, under the heading ‘Our Council’ then go to ‘Mayor & Elected members’ then ‘Community Board - Pātea’ or view them at Pātea or Waverley Library Plus Your Community Board Members are: Jacq Dwyer (Chair) Dianne Lance (Deputy Chair), Jo Peacock, Maria Ferris, Robert Northcott (Pātea Councillor) The meeting times & venues for this year are: Wednesday 6 October, 4pm, Waverley Community Centre Wednesday 17 November, 4pm, Hunter Shaw Building, Pātea

Waverley Croquet Club The 2021-2022 season opened on Saturday 18th September. The day was a beautiful one weather wise, a rare day amongst all the rain we had been having, therefor we had a good turn out. All were pleased to be back on the greens after what seemed a long break. A few hearty souls played through the winter when weather permitted. We are pleased to welcome three new faces, so far this season, keen to give it a go and see where it leads them. Anyone thinking of trying it out, come along to the clubhouse behind the old Scout Hall in Chester St on our club days Wednesdays and Saturdays by 1.15 pm. Alternately you can phone one of the contacts below and they will guide you through the process. It is al ot of fun and laughs. New prospective members are welcome at anytime during the season. Give it a go. We are however playing to Covid level 2 rules, which means restricting distances inside the Clubhouse. That caused us not to have our usual opening day afternoon tea which was missed but also no tea or coffee after play until the restrictions are lifted. The AGM also had to be delayed but we are working on ways to make it happen safely. Members will be advised when this will go ahead. The ground is still too soft to attempt jump shots but so far over the three club days we have had there were four Hole in Ones. Well done to those who achieved them as they are not easy. If this continues we will have a good tally at the end of the season. We wish all our members and prospective members a pleasant and satisfying season. Club contacts: Chris How 06 346 5420, Marie Hawken 06 346 5929, Rae Wilson 06 346 6149 and Sheryl Jones 027 319 2595.

Patea Standby

On August 3rd Patea Standby celebrated 30 years of operating in Patea. A lovely lunch was attended by 80 people – past and present members along with the Deputy Mayor Robert Northcott, members of the Opunake and Waverley clubs and representatives from the Patea LibraryPlus and the local chemist. A birthday cake was cut by Molly Brownrigg and Toni Phillips, both being the only remaining foundation members. David Stowell gave a rundown on our work over the years and thanked everyone for coming. A raffle was won by Bridget Dwyer.

Whenuakura School ‘Growing Personal Excellence’

Hi everyone, It was so nice to get back to school once we returned to Alert Level 2. Students were happy to reconnect with friends and get back to activities such as cross country training and preparing art and writing for Pet Day. We are thrilled to welcome sisters Quincey-Lee and Ata to school and their whànau. These girls join us in the Tuakana Hive in years 3 and 5. They are excited to be at the school their dad attended! We farewelled Mrs Mitchell this term as her contract came to an end and welcomed Ciara Marriott to the team. Mrs Marriott teaches in Teina Nest alongside Miss Forsyth until the end of the year. We were grateful to be able to hold our school cross country event on September 24th albeit with restrictions. A fantastic effort by everyone. Please see the results below. We would like to extend our appreciation and thanks to all the families who have donated bobby calves this season. This has raised nearly $2000 for our school so far, so most appreciated from our farming community. Have a safe and happy break this October holidays and we look forward to an action packed term 4. Ngà mihi, Whenuakura Staff

Waverley Primary School Principal’s Message Well, term three has been a mixed bag. Early in the term our young cricket players were lucky enough to be taken through Whanganui to see the World Test Cricket Championship Mace that the Blackcaps took on tour throughout New Zealand. They met Ross Taylor and Will Young who were touring with the Mace. Our new school sports uniforms have finally arrived. They look amazing. I would like to again thank the Waverley PFA and the Waverley Lions Club for their contributions towards the cost of these. Our students will look very smart indeed. We were so fortunate to fit our Y5&6 Mangatepopo Camp in before the COVID lockdown. It was my first Mangatepopo Camp experience and what an amazing time we had. It really was a winter wonderland. The camp was such a wonderful opportunity for all the students. A big thank you to Hannah Lupton for all your hard work organising this and to our wonderful parent helpers who joined us. With the COVID lockdown hitting midway through the term we have had to reschedule a few things on our school calendar. Our School Cross Country is now scheduled for Tuesday 28 September, and our School Production will now be held in term 4. We would like to thank all the caregivers/parents for their support in ensuring their tamariki continued their learning during lockdown by collecting their work packs from school on the assigned days. It is certainly all about teamwork. Everyone enjoy your term 3 break. Stay safe and we look forward to seeing you for a very busy term 4. Tim Marriott, Principal
