‘Kiwi’ the Racehorse Statue for Waverley New Plymouth sculptor Fridtjof Hanson has created a beautiful statue of ‘Kiwi’ the racehorse and will be donating his time and expertise creating it to the town of Waverley, if the money can be found to cast it in bronze. The price of this will be around $150,000.00, At this stage we have got a committee together and are in the process of consultation with the community and working out how to get the money. We welcome ideas, advice and feedback about this project. We want to be sure that the town wants this statue and then decide where to locate it. Gully Park and near the LibraryPlus are the two places suggested so far. Kiwi is a big part of Waverley’s past and we think it would be a point of interest for the passing traffic to stop and see the statue. Wikipedia sums up the story of that momentous race day win: ‘Kiwi was considered by numerous bookmakers as an outsider for the Melbourne Cup and started with odds of 10/1. Similar to the previous race, Kiwi's jockey Jim Cassidy began the race by settling the horse at the very back of the 24-horse field. At the turn of the Flemington track, with 500 metres remaining, Kiwi was positioned as the second last horse. He was only ahead of a horse called Amarant, who had been injured and was running lame. Upon approaching the final straight, Kiwi began to advance through the field. At the finish line, Kiwi won the race by just over a length. Many race commentators only mentioned Kiwi's name as he neared the finish line, for example, "and here comes Kiwi out of the blue". Kiwi's victory in 1983 has become one of the most memorable performances in the history of the Melbourne Cup, and illustrated a classic stayer's victory. Since winning the race, Kiwi has become a household sporting hero in New Zealand and formed a key example of the underdog winning a horse race against the odds’. It is 150 years this year since the Waverley Racing Club started and it would be a poignant statement to install a statue of our most famous horse in the town, in the Club's landmark year. When Kiwi came home to Lakeside Farm after the 1983 Melbourne Cup win, The Patea Maori Club arrived at the farm to perform for the Lupton family, and fans from all over the world wrote congratulatory letters addressed to ‘Kiwi The Race Horse, Waverley’. The world still remembers ‘Kiwi’. As Ian Smith said: “The win was about a little country town taking on the big city racing centres against the odds”. Thirty-eight years have passed since that win and we are hoping that we can immortalize ‘Kiwi’ in bronze. If you want to contact us about this Brian Rook 027 942 2757 or Jacq Dwyer 027 241 5595. We appreciate your feedback.

A Christian Word Jesus spoke to his newly appointed disciples/apostles about life, His view of how we should be living; for example, He told them in Luke chapter 6:20-49. He said ‘how blessed you are in need, how blessed when you go hungry, how blessed when you weep, when men hate you’. It speaks of Heavenly Kingdom living. We think the opposite, well fed, happy, popular, rich. Jesus was showing just what true/real happiness is – not the things of this world but in a future hope. Hope is being certain of what we do not see! Real happiness is dependent on your future, not your present. Jesus’s illustration seems to be back to front, not our view of happiness at all. I mean if you’re hungry you are blessed, or poor you are rich, kind of seems upside down. His message for those who seek their happiness in the things of the world, those who want to be rich now and those who want to laugh now, and those who want to be popular now, so that you have had your life easy. In other words, would you rather: go through a tough time in this life and look forward to glory and wealth and everything that lies beyond for those whom God loves, or have your good time here and do without it forever afterwards. This sermon on the mount was for His disciples, He was warning them of consequences and that same warning still applies to all who claim Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior today! Nothing has changed for anyone who has decided to follow Jesus. Just be very sure you build your house upon the rock – there are times coming very soon when all this will be exposed and you as a believer may find yourself in a sand pit! Come Lord Jesus Ted Reeves, Patea

Waverley Primary School

Wow what a start to the school year we have had. Throughout the 2020 school year we steadily grew the school roll and at the end of the year had grown enough to be able to employ an additional permanent teacher. Throughout the summer school holidays we again continued to grow and our role presently stands at 112. We now have our sights set on a sixth permanent teacher, hopefully at some stage throughout 2021. I would like to welcome all of our new students and families to Waverley Primary school. The majority of the growth in the school has come in the junior end. We have the following teachers in each of the classrooms. Manuka Hub (New Entrant – Year 1) Kaye Saunders Tawa Hub (Year 1 – Year 2) Hannah Barclay Matai Hub (Year 2 – Year 4) Dianne Sanson Kauri Hub (Year 4 – Year 6) Hannah Lupton, Deputy Principal Rimu Hub (Year 7 – Year 8) Renee Munro Reading Recovery Release and Classroom Teacher - Megan Buchanan Megan Buchanan was another addition to the staff at the end of the 2020 year and we were very fortunate to have secured her services in our Release Teacher role. Many of you will know that Megan was a Teacher Aide here at the school for a number of years before attending university to gain her teaching degree in 2020. Megan will be working with the majority of the children throughout the term. We are very lucky to have retained the majority of our fabulous support staff. Irene Reece, Sally Newland, Annette Campbell and Hollie Brasting are our wonderful Teacher Aides. Gabrielle McCullum is our amazing Office Manager and Kerry Rees is our new Caretaker with Maurice McCullum retiring at the end of last year. I want to thank Maurice for extending his working period until the end of February to complete the new caretaker induction. Maurice has done an amazing job here at Waverley Primary School during his tenure and I want to wish him all the very best for his retirement. We have a large number of school events coming up in the coming weeks, these include swimming sports, Meet, Greet and Eat and our school Trail-Ride. I look forward to seeing many of you while out and about. Tim Marriott, Principal

In Manuka Hub we have been getting to know all of our new friends and have made a great start to the school year.

Waverley Croquet Club Another month has slipped by quickly, with a few things accomplished. Due to the hot weather it was decided to bring forward our start time from 1.30pm to 9.30am, when it is much cooler and more pleasant. This decision was greeted with enthusiasm by most. The RSA doubles tournament was played on a lovely day, Saturday 13th. The winners were: 1st Cheryl Rapson and Christine Robertson. They played extremely well, into the hot afternoon, congratulations to you both. 2nd: Marie Deadman and Con Fergusson and 3rd Chris How and Sally Newland. Well done to all place getters and to those who participated An enjoyable afternoon tea completed a really good day. Many thanks to the Waverley-Waitotara RSA for their kind sponsorship of this event. Hawera Park joined us on Wednesday 24th with a good contingent of 12 keen players. We welcomed three interested people from Patea keen to learn about the game and our club in general. We kicked off with morning tea then matched teams from both clubs and took to the greens. We stopped for a bountiful lunch then resumed play and concluded the day with afternoon tea and a few laughs. Work has begun on our new greens, there have been 4 or 5 working bees and you can see it starting to take shape. Many thanks to those who have put the hours in to make this happen for us. We will be running an Easter Raffle, the tickets are on sale now at $2.00 a ticket with two draws. Could all members have their donations in by the 20th March for the draw on the 27th March. During February there were 16 Hole in ones and 4 jump shots achieved, well done to those who managed them. Upcoming events: 3rd March Our club is to visit Wanganui club. For those who wish to go we will start our day by meeting at the club rooms at 11am and will have lunch in Wanganui before heading to their club for play. 10th March: Tasman Club from New Plymouth will be joining us. Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today. Malcolm X In our preparation for the 2020 school year, the above quote comes to mind. We feel a sense of urgency in catering our curriculum for our learners so that we are preparing them in the best way possible for their futures - whatever that may be. The school year has definitely started with not only ensuring we have instilled high expectations and consistent routines, but we are also offering as many opportunities as we can. Our new school charter and strategic plan has been developed after a very thorough consultation with our community. Thank you to Lani Phillips for maintaining our school pool and Dean Sorensen doing this when needed too. Welcome to our newest learners Aubrey & Rosalie Sorensen. You have made an excellent start at Whenuakura School! Our Maize is in and we would like to thank Waverley Harvesting. This is an excellent fundraiser for us and we really appreciate it. By the time that this goes to print, we would have had two of our terrifying Fright Nights! This takes a lot of time and energy from our fantastic community and we thank you for your support. Harvesting, Silver Fern Farms, ANZCO, Chris Perrett Electrical, Beadles Panel Products Wanganui, Yarrows The Bakers, Engaged Learners - Welcome to the Whenuakura Way Workshops We have had an excellent start with teacher and BOT professional learning, and our 'Welcome to the Whenuakura Way Workshops'. At these workshops we explained our foundational literacy and numeracy programmes, other curriculum area plans, weekly and daily timetables, and shared our assessment practices. We also presented information around our school wide routines, and were able to update contact details and share Seesaw profiles, mathletics & Sunshine Online logins, as well as our school calendar.

Kakaramea School ‘Together We Achieve’ Kakaramea School has had a wonderful start to 2021. We opened the school with a fun community day BBQ, waterslide and bouncy castle, which was a lovely way to reconnect with our people. We have had Home and School Partnership meetings to set goals for the upcoming year. The school spent a day in Opunake for Beach Education, learning how to stay safe in the water with the lifeguards. The parents had a cool time making a human barrier in the sea so the children could splash around in the waves. We have also had our cluster junior and senior swimming sports, both fun days in the sunshine giving our personal best!

Kia Ora Koutou everyone, Welcome to the 2021 school year. I hope you all had a restful holiday and enjoyed the sunshine! We’ve had a super start to 2021 with our new deck being a hit with the students. Thank you to our Kaumatua, Kingi McGregor, for blessing our new deck on the first day back. Our new improved middle room is allowing teachers more flexibility with learning spaces and is a lovely place for students to relax and use as a break out space. The second stage to the renovation will see a cover over the deck so we can work outside in all weather. Our staffing has changed slightly this year: Senior Room - Mrs Devane (Mondays & Fridays) & Mrs Amanda McAree (Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays). Junior Room - Miss Alison Collier Secretary/ Junior Room Teacher Aide - Mrs Gillian Tallott Teacher Aide - Jodi Smith Caretaker - Phillip Thomson Cleaner - Shellay Kingi Van Driver - Don Parkes Our school wide topic for term one is ‘who are we’. We will be exploring our local community, creating and presenting our pepeha and finding out more about ourselves and our families. The teachers have lots of engaging activities planned. Monday Momentum will continue to focus on our DRIVE values of Determination, Respect, Initiative, Virtue and Empathy and awards will be given out weekly for those showing our DRIVE values around the school.

Clubs will be slightly different this year; groups will be working on term long projects to create a product that will be sold at our mid-year market day Technology at Whanganui Girls College starts on 15th February for our Year 7 & 8 students; they will be learning Food Tech, Science, Computer Programming and Hard Materials. This will run on Mondays in Terms One and Three. Swimming With this warm weather it’s a great opportunity to cool down. Swimming lessons begin in Week 2 and I’m sure there will be many opportunities for lunchtime swims!

Patea Golf Club Handicap Pennants The Patea ladies have started the season well winning the first two rounds. Some very good golf was played in the third round but the opposition were on fire and Patea suffered their first loss. The Patea men have found the opposition far too good in their opening two rounds but it is still a learning curve for some of our players and as the season progresses, we hope to have some better results. Business House Golf The first round was postponed due to rough weather but since then we have had some really good turnouts. We have 18 teams entered this year which is 5 more teams than last year. It is good to see many new players and there are more children playing in the teams this year. Nightly cash prizes and generous sponsors’ prizes plus raffle prizes have many of the players going home with prizes. The Vetfarm teams may be the teams to beat this year for the aggregate prize but things can change when the handicaps reduce. Waitangi Day We had a competition day on this public holiday and some very good scores were returned. Nick Williams 41 points, Clayton Hori 40 points, Ev Gibbs 39 points and Robert Bourke 39 points were the prizewinners. Patea Cup Qualifier The first round was played on 13 Feb and Robert Bourke net 68, Cyril Faiers net 74 and Jeff Bright net 74 were the leading scores. In the nett plus putts competition Steve Honeyfield 96, B Hill 99, Kathy Faiers 99 and Robert Bourke 99 were the prize winners. Oakes Memorial The first round of the Oakes Memorial was played on the 20th Feb and conditions were very good. Gerald Rutten 41, Ray Finlay 41, Jeff Bright 38 and Steve Honeyfield 37 are the leading scores. Jeff Bright had the only two of the day but missed the jackpot so the pool has climbed to $178. New Membership Promotion The new membership promotion is still going well. The first year you play only $75-00 which is far cheaper than paying $10-00 every time you go on the golf course. It is good to see the new members get their handicaps and start playing in the club competitions. There is still plenty of time to join the club on this promotion. The grounds are fenced on three sides and have a nice outlook and set on a 863m² section. A long term tenant resides in the back, paying $200 per week and the front unit pays $250 per week. A double carport provides shelter for tenants cars, wood and lawn mowers can be stored in the attached storage sheds for each unit.

Patea Historical Society Fieldtrip to Otautu and Kurani Pa It was a brilliant turn out on a hot summers day on Sunday 21 March for our trip to the site of Otautu Pa (Whenuakura) and Kuranui Pa (near the Patea Dam). We numbered nearly 60 people. The ancient site of Otautu Pa (pronounced Or-toe-two) is on the Whenuakura side of the Patea River. Not a lot is known about this majestic hilltop site, it was abandoned pre-european settlement. By the 1800’s local Māori were living at Hukatere and over the river at Otoia. Our leaders for the trip were Darren Ngarewa, Ivan Bruce and Te Poihi Campbell. We were able to walk over the well-preserved site of Otautu, through the old kumara storage pits, along the trenches and high up on the hand dug ridges. It could easily have accommodated a couple of hundred people. Darren told us that the name Otautu relates the word ‘utu’. Its location on the bend of the river as well as its commanding position gives it the advantage of being able to stop people from passing with out ‘giving something up’ or paying in some way. Ivan pointed out an area in the side of a bank where a dark line of soil could be seen, an old cooking pit. There was a layer of clay on top of it, indicating the height of the trenches were increased at some stage. We then had lunch at the Kakaramea Hotel, a classic NZ barbeque buffet, with a cold beer. Then it was up Ball Road towards the Patea Dam. The site of Kuranui Pa is on the other side of the Patea River from the road. So we all looked across at it over the fence, while Te Poihi did an amazing karakia. Followed by Darren, then Ivan, telling us of its history. The Kuranui stream runs into the Patea River at this point and there is a sharp bend with a huge flat area of land dotted with kahikatea trees. This peaceful area was a refuge for the Pakakohi people in June 1869. As described by James Cowan in his book ‘The New Zealand Wars, a History of the Maori Campaign’ – “In June Major Noake made a canoe expedition up the Patea, taking two hundred and seventy men in his flotilla, and captured the old chief Ngawakataurua and many of his Pakakohi Tribe. The warriors surrendered their arms and were taken out to Patea. Gradually other sections of the tribe were rounded up on the Patea and the Whenuakura, until practically the whole of the fightingmen of the Pakakohi were captured, to the number of over a hundred, besides most of the women and children. The men, to their great disgust, were transported to Otago, and were not released until peace was thoroughly established on the West Coast.” A huge thank you to our tour leaders and all of you who came along.
