Patea Old Folks Hall

Thank you for years of service Noeline

As many of you will know the Patea Old Folks association has had uncertain times for the last couple of years, and after the last AGM it was decided to form at new committee and continue the availability of the Old Folks Hall for all our community. We now have a whole new committee of 10 dedicated local people to run this important facility. These people are Robert Northcott (Chair), Rose Cowley (Secretary), Dora Baker (Treasurer), Laurie Mildenhall, Karen Philips, Tom Matiaha, Robin Ansley, Anne Ansley, Allan Caple, Jacq Dwyer. We are hoping that people will continue to pay the annual membership of $20 per year to our committee. Our Treasurer Dora Baker can be contacted for bank details for this payment, or speak to one of the committee members, 1 April is the start of our financial year. We encourage new membership/subscription from you in our community. This membership doesn’t tie you to any commitment, instead it is like a donation and will allow us to do general maintenance and upkeep of the Hall and keep it in the good condition that it has been left to us by the previous committee. At this point we need to recognise and thank past committee members for all the hard work and dedication that was put into the Hall since 1968. That first committee had the idea to build this well laid out facility at the end of the 1960’s and for the 50 years since consecutive committees have run it with such precision and made it available to the Patea and surroundings districts for hire. We would appreciate support of the community to continue this new chapter of the Old Folks Hall. For an event or function you are able to hire our Hall, all enquiries and bookings to Dora Baker 027 201 9687. Signed, Rose Cowley (secretary) and Jacq Dwyer (committee member)

For almost 25 years Noeline Kerrisk has been the Treasurer of Patea Old Folks Association, and a few weeks ago she passed the reins over to the brand new committee. For Noeline this job hasn’t just been paying the bills. It's been much more than that - it has been doing the gardens, doing the cleaning, taking the bookings for the Hall and showing hundreds of people how to turn on and off the tricky big, but very effective, gas heater!! Over the years Noeline has seen many Presidents come and go from the early days of Ken Christianson, Bert Fields, Bruce Swinbourne, and more recently Ruth Merrigan. Noeline’s husband John had been Treasurer for a couple of years before Noeline took over. Noeline and John moved to Patea from their farm in Kakaramea in 1976, and from that time Noeline has become a firm and fully devoted part of the Patea community. She started delivering meals of wheels in 1963 and is still doing it. She was involved in Patea Scouts when her 2 boys were young, and taught crafts and reading in school back then too. She is also one of the people that delivers all the fresh fish to local elderly after the annual Patea fishing competitions. And if you have a question regarding local history, Noeline is the one to go to. She remembers names, dates and events like it was yesterday. So, for all of these reasons we decided we needed to take Noeline out for morning tea at Ficka Café to say a very big thank you. A couple of weeks ago Marie, Molly and Jacq did just that at 10am. Noeline was meant to dash away at 11am to manicure and polish the nails of the ladies at Te Mahana, like she does with a group of ladies every couple of weeks. But as the clock ticked toward 11am Noeline decided to stay for another cup of tea and miss this one week of pampering others and pamper herself for a change. Thanks so much for keeping the Old Folks Hall in such good stead for so many years Noeline, you are a gem!

Waverley WI

Waverley WI is still going but only with a few members and we would love to see new members join us. We currently meet at a member's home but will look at another venue if our membership increases. We have craft, cooking and flower competitions each month but no one has to do them. Amazing the talent we do have in our small group though. Maybe a way to fill the cookie tin or check out the gardens to see if a flower or two will be ok on the meeting day. If there is no guest speaker then we have a social afternoon followed by afternoon tea. We meet on the 3rd Tuesday of each month, other than January, at 12.30pm starting with a pot luck lunch. The meeting is at 1pm at 14 Bear Street, Waverley. Contact Lyn Smailes 06 346 5408.

DEADLINE: all copy to be handed in by 26 September for October 2020 issue.

A Christian Word Quote from David Pawson: “When religious and moral values are gone, then society looses its stability and collapses. It collapses from inside long before anyone from outside attacks”. Unquote. Now this is something to think about! History proves this process over and over. You could read about the decline of the Roman Empire or the Babylonian empire, powerful empires that ruled the world. Read the Old Testament and see how God warned and then dealt with His chosen people, the Jews, in order to show them the consequences of their folly. Their suffering is a perfect demonstration of the justice of God and their survival is a perfect demonstration of the mercy of God. For God is the God of truth, when He makes a promise He keeps it. When He threatens to punish those who disobey He does precisely that. If he calls a nation they will survive. He warned Israel about their behaviour, sacrificing babies, bowing down to a stone or piece of wood, worshipping the created rather than the creator! They would not listen and as each generation became more vile, God became more angry. Looking at society now, to me it is very frightening; there are new laws that are contrary to that which is natural, babies murdered in the womb. It gets worse generation by generation and the reason why I am fearful is that God has to do something – that is who He is. He will not tolerate this decline, morally and religiously, for too much longer. We may all think that because nothing has happened then we’re ok … NOT! As with the Jewish people, as with other nations, God has made all things good and when they go wrong God will display not His love, but because of His love – punishment. How else will we know we’re off track, chasing new trends and beliefs; all paths do not lead to Heaven by the way. In the Book of Jerimiah, he was a prophet who spoke to the Israelites and warned them to stop and go back to the old ways and worship God accordingly, but they didn’t. Jerusalem was destroyed, burnt and what survivors were left were taken to Babylon (Iraq), that generation died in captivity. Jerimiah 6:16 says, this is what the Lord says “Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. But you said we will not walk in it”. Jesus says, go back to the ancient ways – “I am the way” and you will find rest for your souls. Come Lord Jesus Ted Reeves, Patea

Communities - Step Up for Safe Streets Families and communities are being encouraged to take part in Road Safety Week 2020 (915 November), which involves hundreds of communities, schools and organisations running activities to help raise awareness of road safety issues. The week was postponed from its original date in May due to COVID-19 and will now take place in November, coinciding with the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims (Sunday 15 November). This year Road Safety Week, which is coordinated by road safety charity Brake, sponsored by QBE Insurance and supported by Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency, has the theme Step Up for Safe Streets, focusing on how design-led solutions can prevent people dying or being seriously injured on roads. With the continued impact of COVID-19, Brake is providing resources and activity ideas that can be used in a variety of settings, including at home. In 2018, 828 children under the age of 15 and 1,893 young people aged 15-19 were killed or injured on NZ roads [1]. That’s an average of 52 children and young people dying or suffering injuries as a result of road crashes every week. The Week will focus on how everyone can #StepUp and do their bit for road safety. There will be an emphasis on encouraging people to learn about, shout about and celebrate the design solutions that can enable everyone to get around in a safe and healthy way, every day. Groups can choose to run their initiative on this theme or any other road safety topic, according to their priorities. Parents and community leaders are encouraged to go to www.roadsafetyweek.org.nz/ communities for activity ideas and to register for a free online action pack of resources. Brake is also asking people to complete an anonymous online survey about the safety of their local streets. The survey can be found at: www.surveymonkey.com/r/QGFVCDJ. A free webinar is also being held to provide more information on taking part in Road Safety Week, and ideas for activities to run: Taking part in Road Safety Week NZ, Wednesday 9 September, 2pm-3pm NZST FREE to attend. Sign up at: www.roadsafetyweek.org.nz/about-cat/658-take-part-in-roadsafety-week-nz. For people who can’t attend the session, a recording will be provided, simply sign up for the session to receive the link.

Pātea Community Board Meeting Notes from the meeting on Wednesday 26 August 2020 4pm, provided by the Board Members. The sixth meeting for the year was held at the Hunter Shaw Building Pātea. Present were: Pātea Community Board members; Dianne, Maria, Jo, Rob Northcott (Pātea Ward Councillor), Janine Maruera, (Community Development Officer), Phil Nixon (Mayor), Sara Dymond (PA), Liam Dagg (Group Manager Environmental Services) and several members of the public. Apologies from: Jacq Dwyer Open Forum: Alan Caple – Patea Community Patrol. Things are very quiet at moment. Noticeable reduction in dog issues and dogs roaming. A group of 11-12 teenagers congregating in streets at night but no real issues from them. Sgt Andrew Stilton put in his apologies but nothing to report. Doug Rosewarne – Waverley Community Patrol – Doug spoke of constant issues in Dallison Park. There is vandalism of property, the rugby field gets ploughed up by vehicles and motorbikes. Doug requested the council look into placing security cameras at Dallison Park as a deterrent. Doug also noted that the neighbouring bowling club has been broken in to four times recently. Rob Northcott – Council are currently reviewing camera policy due to the low police presence in smaller towns. Not sure of outcome. Rob suggested the bowling club could their put own camera in and apply to the board for funding. Olivia Shimmin– Olivia thanked the Board for listening to her letter read out at the last meeting by Jacq Dwyer on her behalf, with regards to fluoridation of Patea and Waverley water supplies decided upon at Council in 2012. She wanted to appear and answer any questions the board may have. Olivia emphasised the fact that a majority of the community had voiced it did not want fluoridation, yet the council pursued anyway. Those that wish to have fluoridation have other options available to them yet those that do not want it have had their choice taken away. Maria Ferris asked Olivia “Where to from here? How do we move forward? Olivia replied that perhaps another community consultation should take place to see where the community now sits. If the community still overwhelmingly voted against fluoridation of the town supply then it should be removed. Joanne Peacock commented that this was of interest to her as she was a Waverley resident affected by the recent fluoridation of the Waverley Water supply and the current issues. She reassured Olivia that she is being heard and thanked her for her input on the issue to date. Rob Northcott asked how the issue should be pursued officially. Both Mayor Nixon and Liam Dagg confirmed that because the issue was debated and decided upon at council then a new submission or debate should be directed back to council directly. Stephanie Lewis – Labour candidate spoke to introduced herself as our Labour candidate and highlighted some of the issues we face in our area. Laurie Mildenhall– wanted update on waka. Liam provided update from Phil Waite. Council are still tracing leak to curb it. Still challenges in finding it. Working with local person to paint it. Maintenance team will be working on it too. Janine added that the painting is the people in the waka. Laurie added that he noticed water is longer sitting in there which is good news, so some progress has been made. Kelvin – Patea Beach lookouts. Lived here for 30 years – no tables or chairs at the lookouts. Lots of traffic, campervans but no tables. Can we have tables and chairs to enhance area and entice visitors. Second look out, lower tier, get some info about the wind farm etc. These lookouts are only going to get busier because of the windfarm. Rob – Yes this is on my agenda and will be approaching Tilt at next meeting. Unfortunately the last meeting was cancelled due to change in covid levels. Community Board is currently working on an information board down there as well. Maria Ferris – read a letter on behalf of Waverley resident (student) Robert Carrick. Robert sent a request to the community board for a Basketball backboard and hoop at Aotea Park Waverley for youth to use. Robert also provided in indication of pricing. Maria commented

that the courts were well used and this would be a great asset for the youth of the community. All of the board agreed. Mayor Nixon applauded Roberts initiative and thought it was a great idea. He also said it would be great to see a group of youth (including Robert) involved in the whole project as a learning experience. The board will contact Robert so next steps can be taken. End public forum. Roaming Dog update – Liam Dagg provided an update – With regards to Bill Rosewarne case. Prosecution 1st hearing was yesterday and it was postponed until 15th September which is disappointing. There was a dog attack Sunday, attended by allied security. Owner will be prosecuted. A lot of extra resources had been allocated to animal control in Patea over the last 6 weeks which has seen some positive change as mentioned by Alan Caple previously. This is still an on going issue and still a focus for council. Liam has also been made aware of many feral roosters which council will look in to. Pipe at Patea beach has been followed up – Council made an inquiry to first gas with regards to ownership. Not theirs but they will help fix it. Land ownership issues a problem now. Once sorted pipe will be removed. Drainage pipe issue that was bought to meeting by Paul Broughton last meeting is still being worked on, Liam has it documented in issues register. End of update from Liam Beach lookout – directional sign update Janine. Board are currently deciding on what design should look like. Iwi consultation also taking place next week. Jacq following up on rock size, location etc so best placement can be decided upon. Very much a work in progress. Janine also gave an overview of the innovative streets project consultation and urged members of the public to attend the open days at the Patea and Waverley libraries when council staff will be present. Dianne commented that it would be great if people with mobility issues could attend and provide feedback on the innovative streets project. Doug Rosewarne commented that a big issue with the Waverley main street is the size of the curb or step down from foot path to road. Full minutes of this and all Council meetings can be found on the South Taranaki District Council Website, under the heading ‘Our Council’ then go to ‘Mayor & Elected members’ then ‘Community Board - Pātea’ or view them at Pātea or Waverley Library Plus. Input Wanted for Innovating Streets in Eltham and Waverley Eltham and Waverley have been allocated funding from Waka Kotahi (The NZ Transport Agency’s) Innovative Streets Fund and the Council wants to hear your ideas on how to create safer crossing points, slow down traffic and make the towns more welcoming and vibrant. South Taranaki District Council (STDC) community development manager, Claire Symes, says the aim of the projects are to address issues related to speed, safety and vibrancy which were identified in the Eltham and Waverley Town Masterplans developed last year, by testing potential street treatments and comparing which are the most effective. Both projects will be co-designed in partnership with local communities and businesses. “There will be displays in the Town’s LibraryPlus centres from 31 August to 11 September and residents can give their ideas there, email them to cdunit@stdc.govt.nz or phone 0800 111 323. Feedback forms will be available on the Council website www.southtaranaki.com Council staff will also be at the LibraryPlus centres in both towns on Wednesday 2 September and Thursday 3 September from 9am – 3pm to talk about the project and will be visiting businesses in the towns,” she says. “The residents’ ideas will then be collated into a plan by urban architects Bluemarble, who will work closely with the Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency safety engineers.” Mrs Symes says draft plans will be drawn up and presented back to the community in October before being finalised in November. The street treatments will be installed in February/ March and monitored to see how they are working so adjustments can be made if required. The project is 90% funded by the Waka Kotahi Innovating Streets pilot fund with the South Taranaki District Council funding the remaining 10%.

Waverley Primary School Exciting things have been happening at Waverley Primary School: A message from the Principal:

Some of you will be aware that I have just started at Waverley Primary School after some years teaching within New Zealand before a period of teaching internationally. It was a very difficult time trying to get back into the country with flights being changed and cancelled, and changed again but after a long 19hr flight and 2 weeks of isolation in Hamilton, my family and I are finally settling in this wonderful community. On Wednesday 12th August, the New Zealand Government moved us to Level 2. While the school Staff and Board have safety measures in place for the staff and students, we are encouraging you all to be vigilant and should yourselves or your children show any of the symptoms of COVID, to please seek medical advice through the helpline. If you are coming into the school, please remember to sign in using the COVID Tracing Application if you have this on your phone or sign the book that is available. Please use the Hand Sanitiser that is provided. This is to ensure that we are providing a safe environment for our staff and tamariki. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Clive Rennie for all of the amazing work he has done for the Waverley Primary School students, staff and community. He has left us in excellent shape. A Special thanks needs to go to his lovely wife Ann Rennie who has transformed the Waverley School Library into an inviting learning space that will be a part of every Waverley Primary School child’s educational journey here. I also want to thank the Board of Waverley Primary School for their hard work and support. They have made the transition for myself and my family so much easier. Finally, I want to thank the staff, the children and the community members that I have met so far. Everyone has been so welcoming. It is a wonderful feeling knowing that my family and I are becoming part of the Waverley Community. News from the classrooms: The learners in Rimu Hub have been busy taking part in a range of activities, both within the classroom and around the local area. The students supported the tamariki from Te Hunga Ririki Te Kohanga Reo at Wai-O-Turi Marae where they sung waiata as part of the Puanga/ Matariki celebrations.

At the start of each Inquiry topic, the staff set up a Hook-in activity. This term the senior classes are studying disasters and began with having to build a shelter using the few items they were able to find after ‘a disaster’ had hit our school.

On the 5th of October 2019 our much-loved sister Dorothy Ann Robinson (nee Nelson) sadly passed away, one day before her 79th birthday. Dot’s early life was spent in Alton and Kakaramea. She was born in 1940, the fifth child of Frank and May Nelson, and was two when they shifted to Kakaramea. And it was in 1945 that Dot started school there, the school roll at that time was 85 and World War II was coming to an end. By 1946 the family comprised of seven daughters: Joyce, Nyla, Eunice, Margaret, Dorothy, Frances and Alison. As young adults, six of the sisters worked at the Patea Hospital. We had a quiet family life helping around the house, feeding the chooks, helping out in the vegie garden, or anything else that needed doing. Dot loved getting up early to help Dad milk the two house cows. The family joke was that she would have to marry a farmer. In the 1940’s listening to the radio was important in all our lives, especially to us smaller children. We would get up early on a Sunday morning to listen to the Children’s request session. Occasionally Joy would post a letter to 2ZB Wellington, asking them to play a song for us. It would always be the Teddy Bears Picnic, which we loved. Both Joyce and Eunice learned to play the piano (by ear). Often the three of us youngest would drift off to sleep hearing the piano being played. When she finished at Kakaramea Primary, Dot went onto Hawera High School, taking a Commercial Course. She also learnt to play the violin, becoming part of the High School Orchestra. For sport she played BasketBall and Hockey. Then in the 5th form she passed the School Certificate examination. On leaving school, Dot started working at the Patea County Office, doing secretarial work, she biked to work from Kakaramea into town every day, in all weather. She played basketball and also joined our local Kakaramea Marching Girls team, as Margaret had also been in the team since it started. After a little over 2 years at the County Office Dot decided she wanted to go nursing. She applied to the Wanganui Hospital and was accepted. A two-year course as a maternity nurse followed. After this she made another decision to do more training. To become a Sister able to deliver babies without a doctor present. She had to go to St Helens Hospital in Wellington for more training. This involved a one-year course, making her a qualified midwife. At the end of her training Dot came back to Wanganui to work until an opportunity came up to come back to Patea. She took up the position as Sister in Charge at the Patea Maternity Annexe. She loved the job and stayed about one year. But she found the pressure of the job – being on-call 24/7, even on her days off, living-in at the Nurses Home, plus having no car finally prompted her to accept a position at the Marton Maternity Unit. While she was at Marton she met her future husband; Nobby Robinson. He was in the Airforce and stationed at Ohakea. They married in 1964 and had two children: Shawn and Debbie. Dot and Nobby later became Grandparents to Rebecca & Steven, Jason & Caitlin, whom they both adored. They had a very happy marriage over many years and did a lot of travelling during that time. They both loved entertaining friends and family, with Dot doing 90% of the catering. About six years ago Nobby became very sick and between trips to hospital Dot nursed him until he passed away. Now they are together again. Our sister was so talented, she sewed beautifully, had a fantastic garden and she was an incredible knitter. My daughters still talk about the beautiful knitted baby garments she sent them as their babies were born. She always dropped everything to help others out, this included me, when 18 months ago when I was unable to walk without the aid of a walker. Dot rang me for the usual sister catchup and then a few days later this wonderful present arrived, a plaque which I read every day: ‘Dream Big….Let no one dull your Sparkle, Shine in your own light, Believe in you, Never ever give up’. Not only a sister, but a best friend too. Only three of us left now. Joy at Waitara, Fran at Whenuakura and Aly at Rotorua. A year has almost passed since Dot left us, another link in our chain broken. Fran Willis, nee Nelson. Above right: Dorothy Nelson in her Maternity Sister uniform. Waverley Playcentre

It’s been a fairly quiet start to the term with lots of our Playcentre whanau busy out on the farm, at other work commitments and unfortunately a few resting up at home with winter bugs. However we have still enjoyed plenty of activities even on the days we’ve had smaller numbers. A small group of 4 year olds had a visit to Waverley Primary school earlier in the month to check out Manuka Hub which will be their classroom for 2021. We met with Ms Saunders along with the Manuka Hub students who welcomed us into their class room with a giant story about chocolate. A couple of our tamariki already know this as a familiar place as they

have older siblings who attend, excitingly for others it was the first time they had been into the class room so it was a great opportunity for them to go with a small group and be able to participate in the class activities together. It was fun to see the different ways they learn using textures, colours and other interesting objects. We ended our visit with some familiar waiata, that we all joined in on. A few of our parents/caregivers have just attended a First Aid course held at the local Bowling club. We would like to thank the Waverley Standby for organising this and inviting us to join in on the day. The tamariki have also been practising a bit of first aid of their own in our family play area. We’ve had a selection of bandages, tape and plasters that they have been using to patch up the dolls. They’ve shown lots of perseverance using their fine motor skills as well as care and compassion towards their “patients”. Mahi pai, what fantastic things to practice! Our sessions are held Wednesday and Friday mornings 9am-12pm. If you are interested to see what happens at Playcentre come along with your baby or pre-schooler for a no obligation, free session!
