A Christian Word I have been thinking a lot about the state of this country and the direction we are heading in. to some I suppose it is ok but to others I’m hoping that they think it isn’t ok! Because all I’m seeing is God’s laws broken, discarded, ignored and just plain rebelliousness. It does concern me deeply because as I have written over the past two months, we will never get away with this. God will judge all of us for whatever part we play! Fact!! To quote from David Pawson, who has said, “Disaster isn’t arbitrary. Disaster is related to disobedience. God has made this world a lawful world. His laws protect us, so thank Him for His laws. You cannot break His laws, you can only illustrate them. Do you think that if you walk off a cliff, you will break the law of gravity? No. You will illustrate it. You cannot break God’s laws, they break you. That is the truth. It is the same with health. There are laws of health. If you break the laws of physical health, you don’t break them, they break you. That is the heart of our problem … disobedience! Can a leopard change its spots? Sin is written into our hearts and we cannot change ourselves. Unquote – we are a disobedient and rebellious people. Seems as though we are helpless to change our spots! We have sin written unto our hearts (intentions), we are choosing to ignore God’s laws and rewrite our own. Why? Because we know better? We can do whatever we like, who is going to stop us? Is that rebellion or what! Thanks be to God that we have this one and only way back to Him and that is through His Son Jesus Christ, and Him crucified for the forgiveness of our sins, our rebellion and our disobedience. God, who is going to judge this world, (you and me) for our actions, choices etc, is giving mankind a final chance to realise this and repent, turn away from this sin filled life and be set free. Placed under His guardianship with the promise that only God can give – eternal life through Jesus Christ alone! Time is swiftly running out! Come Lord Jesus Ted Reeves, Patea

Waverley Playcentre

September is here and it's been a fun few weeks leading up to the end of the term at playcentre. It's been great seeing and interacting with the new faces joining the playcentre whanau. The last few weeks the tamariki have enjoyed being able to get outside and make the most of this lovely sunny weather. Last week the children loved doing messy play outside where they all helped make slime with cornflour and water. This was a great way for them to learn different textures and colours as well as developing hand-eye coordination. All the kids have enjoyed doing different types of painting lately. They love using different objects to make different patterns such as toy cars and animals. We had Hawera playcentre come and visit us on the 25th which they all enjoyed seeing new toys and being in a different environment. Waverley playcentre loved having them there. As the holidays have rolled round we are closed from the 28th of September but will be up and running for term 4 on the 14th of October. Our open hours are Wednesday and Friday 9am-12pm. Would be lovely to see more new faces. Our AGM will be held on Friday 16th October 2020, 6pm; at Abbotsford, 37 Suther Street, Waverley. Please contact Lynda if you’d like to attend; 022 466 7782.

Waverley Primary School Dear Parent/Caregivers Kia Ora Koutou, On Wednesday 16th September we had a school fundraiser down at Duncan and Jane Wilson’s farm doing some Riparian Planting. I wanted to thank not only Jane and Duncan for nominating Waverley Primary School for the work, but also the many parents, children and staff who came down and got stuck in, and got the job done. In the few hours that we were there, we planted more than 1000 trees, something Duncan said would have taken his crew a lot longer. Special thanks needs to go to Hannah Boon for all of the organisation that went into this fundraiser. It is not easy to coordinate such an event and she did a magnificent job. Last week we officially reopened our school library. Once again a massive thank you to Ann Rennie for all of the work that she has done transforming our library from a decommissioned tired space into a terrific learning space for our children. If you have not seen the library in its new state, please pop on in and have a look. We would also like to welcome Ann on to the staff for the remainder of the year. Ann will be working one day a week in the library continuing to make improvements and train up some of the staff on the library program so we can have a sustainable library program moving forward into the next year. On Thursday evening our school held a disco for our students. It was an excellent event and I want to take this opportunity to thank Ricki-Lee Kiff and her amazing PFA group for all of their hard work and organisation for our school. Congratulations to the following boys for their efforts at the Intermediate Cross Country held on Thursday 17th September in Whanganui. The three boys did a great job and finished in the top 50, Kaeu brooks finished in 11th, Jack Amon in 42nd and Tommy Soutar in 48th place. An outstanding achievement boys! Next week the Year 5 students are off on camp. All the best to Hannah Lupton and the Kauri Hub children who are attending the camp. It sounds like a very exciting opportunity. Thanks to the parents who have volunteered to attend the camp. Without your help these kinds of experiences cannot go ahead so it is greatly appreciated. Thank you everyone. Kia Ora Koutou Everyone, It was great to welcome in our parents and community for our Cross Country on Friday. The students had been training for the majority of the term and what determination they showed during the run! The staff were very proud of the effort all of the children put in. It’s a shame that our interschool cross country events have been cancelled this year due to COVID restrictions. We have had great success with our new timetable. Staff and students are refreshed with more breaks and our students have adapted well to the change, enjoying fruit and milk after our last break of the day. Plans are underway for our Senior camp and Middle and Junior sleepovers combined with a big day out in Palmerston North. Thanks to the parents volunteering to help us with these as without your support we wouldn’t be able to go ahead with our plans. The Senior class are heading to Waitomo for two nights, the Middles and Juniors are heading to Palmerston North and staying the night at Wai-Inu beach and School. We’re all very excited! Our Planet Green focus has been filled with many hands-on activities including making bird feeders. We’ve enjoyed visits from Project Reef Taranaki and Ash from Rotokare. All classes have upcoming trips to Bushy Park which will be great days of learning about our local environment. Years 5 - 8 are currently having dance lessons at Kai Iwi school with legendary dance teacher Mark Glastonbury. This will lead to a Dance competition at the War Memorial Hall on 20th September. Our school DRIVE values of Determination, Respect, Initiative, Virtue and Empathy continue to underpin our teaching and learning. DRIVE cards will be handed out at lunchtime to deserving students and these will go into a draw for an ice cream- drawn during our Monday Momentum sessions. Thanks to Carol Hurley for the donation of Dog Safety Education books!

Whenuakura School - Growing Personal Excellence It is hard to believe that term three is nearly over. We have had a very settled term with lots of learning, children aiming for their personal best, and also having lots of fun in the playground. Time really does fly when you’re having fun! As always we are very proud of our Whenuakura learners. They have been aiming for excellence in all areas of school life - in the classroom, during cross country, in the playground, and also when we have had school activities such as Lamb & Pet Day, Sport Taranaki and Connect. Monday Momentum continues to be a fantastic way to teach our CORE values and set challenges based on these throughout the week. We have been celebrating Te Wiki o Te Reo Maori, and also had a small group that worked with Katherine from the LibraryPlus to film a segment for the What Now TV show! Recently, we swapped classrooms and asked our learners some questions to help with our planning for next term. Here are some of their responses:

Lamb and Pet Day The highlight of our rural school calendar is of course the annual Lamb and Pet Day. This year we had a simple but successful event, and were very lucky the weather wasn’t too bad for us! It was a pleasure to see so many faces in the community who we haven’t had on site since before the lockdown. This was a great day for the school community to recognise the effort of our ‘young farmers’ who have worked hard to select, prepare and show their livestock. It was wonderful to see so many children showing the motivation, commitment, responsibility and compassion to prepare for this day – strong personal qualities that will serve them well later in life. We appreciate the support and patronage of our local and wider community and sponsors, whom without their contribution this event wouldn’t be nearly as successful.

Thank you to our sponsors: Silver Fern Farms, McCarty & Hunger Ltd, Taranaki Vet Centre, LIC, ANZCO, Kiihfuss Bros, FMG Insurance, Farmlands Hawera, Lesley Pick, Yarrows The Bakers, D & S Contracting, Claire Honeyfield, PGG Wrightsons.

Ronald Hugh Morrieson Literary Awards 2020

The wait is over! Finalists for the Ronald Hugh Morrieson Literary Awards have been announced. 124 entries have kept this year’s judges busy since the competition closed in August. There are five categories in the Awards; the Secondary School Poetry and Short Story categories, the Open section Poetry, Short Story categories and the Secondary School Research Article category. Research article judge Matt Rilkoff says this year’s entries made their influencers real. “It is no easy task to bring a person to life using words.” he says. “They revealed their motivations, their character, their charming idiosyncrasies, their habits and their philosophies.” Short Story judge Whiti Hereaka says entries this year reflected the current state of the world. “I’m a big believer that stories and art help us all to navigate this often strange world — particularly in a world tipped off kilter by a global pandemic.” She says. “Some of the entries into the short story competition this year reflected what is happening in our world: dealing with the realities of lockdown and the strains of mental illness. But there were also humorous stories and stories of hope.” Poetry judge Glenn Colquhoun congratulated every entrant. “My thanks to all those who entered the competition. It is a brave and fragile thing to pick and pen and paper and write ones observations and recollections of the world.” he says. Everyone is invited to attend the Awards Ceremony at the Hāwera Community Centre Hall, Albion Street, 7pm on Wednesday 28 October, where the judges will comment on their respective categories and highlight the works that won them over. RSVP with numbers attending to librarycontact@ stdc.govt.nz by Friday 23 September. Kids learning Water Skills for Life

Water Safety New Zealand (WSNZ) has undertaken a strategic refresh to get greater cut through with its Water Skills for Life aquatic education programme for children aged five to 13. Water Skills for Life is delivered to children in New Zealand primary schools. It is linked into the national education curriculum and gives children in years 1 – 8 the skills and knowledge they need to assess risk and make smart decisions around water. Drowning is the leading cause of recreational death and the third highest cause of accidental death in New Zealand. In 2019 there were 82 preventable drowning fatalities. The goal of this new Water Skills for Life strategy is to get more kiwi kids access to opportunities to learn these critical water safety competencies. “Aquatic education is part of the New Zealand Curriculum and WSNZ would like to see Water Skills for Life as an entrenched part of every New Zealand child’s early education. By year six every child should have these foundational skills and knowledge so they are able to assess risk and stay safe,” says WSNZ CEO Jonty Mills. A refreshed and stronger relationship with Swimming New Zealand (SNZ) is critical to this new strategy. SNZ will lead the professionalisation of professional development for school teachers so more students will have the opportunity to learn in a school pool with teacher support.
