Waverley Croquet Club The season is now well underway, with a relatively busy month. The singles are going well, as many have gone along on extra days, when they could, to play their games. The Doff Lupton Cup was played for late August and was won by Helen Fairweather, well done Helen. She was presented the cup by Marie Hawken. There were nine 'Hole in ones' in October a good achievement. Fun day was exactly that, a lot of laughter and a few outbursts were heard over the greens as players were playing with lemons, tennis balls, golf balls and bowling balls. Father Ted had a bit of devine intervention at many hoops, while animals were seen trotting around the course. A few hoops fell like dominoes as others were being burgled. There was an All Black in our mist but the Arab lost her camel and had to retire at lunchtime while the cowboys horse stayed put. It was good to see all dressed to the theme, even the one back to front, soon found whether she was coming or going. It was a great day. Thank you Helen for putting it on. Upcoming events: Club doubles will commence on Saturday 21st November, please get your names in early. Wanganui Club is expected to join us on Wednesday 2nd December, yet to be confirmed. Put this date on your calendar, as it always a good day when it is inter-club. Can members please contribute to the Christmas raffle. Donations are to be in by mid November, as this will come around quickly.

Freaky Friday @ the Museum More than 240 people enjoyed Halloween at Aotea Utanganui Museum on Friday 30 October. Staff and volunteers decorated the museum - our thanks to everyone who made this fun event possible. One parent said "It was awesome, me & my kiddies loved it! Thank you so much for putting this together".

A Christian Word As we grow somewhat older I think that because death is a lot closer or real. We would be very wise indeed to contemplate all those heavenly teachings most of us did receive when we were a lot younger. It was not relevant at such a young age to be thinking about dying, that’s years away! Suddenly it’s not! It’s right here at the door, an unavoidable reality we have to deal with. We can do an ostrich impersonation and try to persuade ourselves that God is not real, that could be the easiest way. But I would choose to believe that we would want to be sure, either way, the need to find peace before we die is urgent, the truth is absolutely necessary. How will you know? There are so many ways or choices out there for you to be thoroughly confused by and going with the latest trend is so easy. You do need to be so sure of the choice you make because you alone will be responsible for the outcome and by that I mean, do you get to have Eternal life or not! I want to point out, purely from experience, that calling out to God Almighty through His Son Jesus Christ is the way, the truth and the life. God will never disappoint you if you are sincere, going to church is not going to be of any assistance whatsoever if you do not have a personal relationship with Jesus, because everything expands or exists from Him alone, Jesus does not live in a church building! When you desire to get the answer to life and eternity, right where you are now you can ask Jesus to be your Lord and Saviour, at home or wherever. God will hear your prayer and respond so swiftly that you will know that you know, God is real., He did create the heavens, earth, ocean, wind, day and night … everything is the work of His hands for you to discover about Him! Praise God that He made it so clear and easy for you. The greatest miracle is your salvation and one minute you’re in the doubter’s camp and miraculously you’re in God’s hands, instant! So powerfully that it takes your breath away … It is hard to explain this transition, but it has to be God who does it otherwise we would eventually lose heart and wander away from Him. But when He holds you, you will know you are saved for all of eternity and that is the most priceless reality you will ever experience, it is why God created us … for Himself to be with His created forever. Y ou are the work of His hands and His love for you will hold all together for ever. So right where you are, ask God to forgive you your sins and accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour. Saviour being the key word here for you! Come Lord Jesus Ted Reeves, Patea

Christmas House Tour

Christmas is coming early to South Taranaki with 8 houses opening their doors on Saturday 28 November for the South Taranaki Christmas House Tour. The tour is a fundraiser for St John with funds going towards the building of a new ambulance station in South Taranaki. Some of the Christmas houses are situated in town and some are country homes. All their owners have a love for the festive season and enjoy decorating their homes to celebrate it. Some are collectors and have gathered a stunning array of decorations over the years; others are crafters and love to create their own adornments for their homes. Either way, the halls are being decked, the stockings hung and a great day out prepared for all those participating in the tour. As a bonus, ticket holders can enter a draw for four fifty dollar vouchers from the Christmas Village in New Plymouth. Tickets are available from Patea Pharmacy.

Notes from the meeting on Wednesday 7 October 2020 4pm, provided by the Board Members. The seventh meeting for the year was held at the Waverley Community Centre. Present were: Pātea Community Board members; Dianne, Maria, Jo, Rob Northcott (Pātea Ward Councillor), Janine Maruera, (Community Development Officer), Phil Nixon (Mayor), Sara Dymond (PA), Liam Dagg (Group Manager Environmental Services) and several members of the public. Apologies from: Jacq Dwyer Open Forum: Allan Caple – Patea Community Patrol. Things are very quiet at moment. Noticeable reduction in dog issues and dogs roaming. A group of 11-12 teenagers congregating in streets at night but no real issues from them. Sgt Andrew Stilton from Hawera Police put in his apologies but nothing to report. Doug Rosewarne – Waverley Community Patrol – Doug spoke of constant issues in Dallison Park. There is vandalism of property, the rugby field gets ploughed up by vehicles and motorbikes. Doug requested the council look into placing security cameras at Dallison Park as a deterrent. Doug also noted that the neighbouring bowling club has been broken in to four times recently. Rob Northcott – Council are currently reviewing camera policy due to the low police presence in smaller towns. Not sure of outcome. Rob suggested the bowling club could their put own camera in and apply to the board for funding. Olivia Shimmin– Olivia thanked the Board for listening to her letter at the last meeting with regards to fluoridation of Patea and Waverley water supplies. She wanted to appear and answer any questions the board may have. Olivia emphasised the fact that a majority of the community had voiced it did not want fluoridation yet the council pursued anyway. Those that wish to have fluoridation have other options available to them yet those that do not want it have had their choice taken away. Maria Ferris asked Olivia “Where to from here? How do we move forward? Olivia replied that perhaps another community consultation should take place to see where the community now sits. If the community still overwhelmingly voted against fluoridation of the town supply then it should be removed. Joanne Peacock commented that this was of interest to her as she was a Waverley resident affected by the recent fluoridation of the Waverley Water supply and the current issues. She reassured Olivia that she is being heard and thanked her for her input on the issue to date. Rob Northcott asked how the issue should be pursued officially. Both Mayor Nixon and Liam Dagg confirmed that because the issue was debated and decided upon at council then a new submission or debate should be directed back to council directly. Stephanie Lewis – spoke to introduce herself as our Labour candidate for the Whanganui electorate and highlighted some of the issues we face in our area. Laurie Mildenhall– wanted update on waka. Liam provided update from Phil Waite. Council are still tracing leak to curb it. Still challenges in finding it. Working with local person to paint it, maintenance team will be working on it too. Janine said that the painting is of the people in the waka. Laurie added that he noticed water is longer sitting in there, which is good, so some progress has been made. Kelvin – Patea Beach lookouts. Lived here for 30 years – no tables or chairs at the lookouts. Lots of traffic, campervans but no tables. Can we have tables and chairs to enhance area and entice visitors. Second look out, lower tier, get some info about the wind farm etc. These lookouts are only going to get busier because of the windfarm. Rob – Yes this is on my agenda. Will approach Tilt at next meeting. Unfortunately, the last meeting was cancelled due to change in covid levels. Community board is currently working on an information board down there as well. Maria Ferris – read a letter on behalf of Waverley resident (student) Robert Carrick. Robert sent a request to the Community Board for a Basketball backboard and hoop at Aotea Park Waverley for youth to use. Robert also provided in indication of pricing. Maria commented that the courts were well used and this would be a great asset for the youth of the community. All of the board agreed. Mayor Nixon applauded Roberts initiative and thought it was a great idea. He also said it would be great to see a group of youth (including Robert) involved in the whole project as a learning experience. The Board will contact Robert so next steps can be taken. End public forum. Roaming Dog update – Liam Dagg provided an update – With regards to Bill Rosewarne case. Prosecution 1st hearing was yesterday and it was postponed until 15th October which is disappointing. There was a dog attack Sunday, attended by allied security. Owner will be prosecuted. A lot of extra resources had been allocated to animal control in Patea over the last 6 weeks which has seen some positive change as mentioned by Alan Caple previously. This is still an ongoing issue and still a focus for council. Liam has also been made aware of many feral roosters which council will look in to. Pipe at Patea beach has been followed up – Council made an inquiry to first gas with regards to ownership. Not theirs but they will help fix it. Land ownership issues a problem now. Once sorted pipe will be removed. Drainage pipe issue that was bought to meeting by Paul Broughton last meeting is still being worked on, Liam has it documented in issues register. End of update from Liam Beach lookout – directional sign update Janine. Board are currently deciding on what design should look like. Iwi consultation also taking place next week. Jacq following up on rock size, location etc so best placement can be decided upon. Very much a work in progress. Janine also gave an overview of the innovative streets project consultation and urged members of the public to attend the open days at the Patea and Waverley libraries when council staff will be present. Dianne commented that it would be great if people with mobility issues could attend and provide feedback on the innovative streets project. Doug Rosewarne commented that a big issue with the Waverley main street is the size of the curb or step down from foot path to road. Full minutes of this and all Council meetings can be found on the South Taranaki District Council Website, under the heading ‘Our Council’ then go to ‘Mayor & Elected members’ then ‘Community Board - Pātea’ or view them at Pātea or Waverley Library Plus Your Community Board Members are: Jacq Dwyer (Chair) Dianne Lance (Deputy Chair), Jo Peacock, Maria Ferris, Robert Northcott (Pātea Councillor) The meeting times & venues for this year are: Wednesday 18 November, 4pm, Alton Coronation Hall, 355 Ball Rd

Wow, what a wild start to Term 4! We started the term off with our school Pet Day which was a lot of fun. It was so lovely to welcome all our whanau members back to school, and to see how well the kids have looked after their animals. Here are some photos of the day, along with some of the children’s beautiful Hall of Creativity masterpieces.

Another highlight was Grandparents and Whanau Day, where the children celebrated their learning with family members, followed by a shared lunch. It was neat to have all the proud family members here, and so much delicious kai to share!

Young Mia Finally Celebrates Naming of New Rhododendron

Mia Edmonds, 4, was delighted to finally plant the ‘Rosy Comet’ at Pukeiti, a new hybrid vireya rhododendron she won the naming rights to in a Pukeiti summer competition. Saturday is the only day the Edmonds family has off to spend time together due to Mia’s parents work schedules, and this Saturday was particularly special. Mia was joined by her sister Taylor, 6, her parents Kerry and Jen, and grandparents, Ronnie and Noel as they celebrated with lunch at the Rainforest Eatery before helping to plant the Rosy Comet firmly in its new home within the covered vireya walk. “It’s fantastic to see the younger generation having an interest in gardening and plants,” says Greg Rine, Regional Gardens Manager. “That’s what the gardens are all about, getting people from all ages outdoors and connecting with nature.” That’s something the Edmonds family know first-hand, as Mia and Taylor are keen outdoor enthusiasts and the family spend many Saturdays exploring local parks and gardens. They are excited to be able to return to Pukeiti and revisit the Rosy Comet for years to come. "We are always out on some type of bush walk and last weekend we actually took the girls up the Pukeiti summit,” says Jen. With its rosy pink petals and elongated shape, Rosy Comet is a perfect name for this new variety which is a hybrid of two species - Rhododendron tuba and Rhododendron praetervisum, bred by Keith Adams in New Plymouth. Find it in the kākāpō house at the end of the vireya walk at Pukeiti.

Whenuakura School - ‘Growing Personal Excellence’ Our learners returned from their break full of energy and enthusiasm for lots of learning and new experiences. It’s a good time to reflect on the quote above because teachers and students have been working hard to assess learning the last few weeks. What are our dreams when leaving school one day? What do I need to learn now, to help me get there? This is especially poignant for our year six student Kyvarn Kelsen who is leaving us at the end of the year. The staff and students wish you all the best on the rest of your schooling journey and encourage you to return to Whenuakura School to visit whenever you can! We have welcomed Myles Butler who has started in the Teina Nest. We are excited to have you join us for your learning adventure. At the end of the year we sadly farewell our fantastic reading recovery teacher Lesley Pick. Lesley has been part of our school community for many years as a classroom teacher in the past as well as reading recovery teacher more recently. We will miss having her around and wish her all the best for her retirement. We are also currently taking enrolments for 2021, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you would like more information about our high quality learning programmes and engaging curriculum. Have a fantastic festive season everyone! SPORTING SUCCESS Our school pool is up and running for the summer season and we are fortunate to not only have this available for swimming lessons, but to also have available for our learners during lunch breaks as the weather warms up. Thank you Lani Phillips for maintaining this for us. Touch season has now commenced. We have two teams entered and it is excellent to see both teams showing top sportsmanship and enjoying themselves. It would not be possible without all of our wonderful parents who help out with transport, refereeing and coaching every week. Thank you to Marichen Honeyfield for coaching year 1 & 2, and Paul Mitchell for coaching year 3 & 4. ENGAGED LEARNERS Celebrating the progress in achievement made by all of our learners is one of the exciting parts of term four. We have been very pleased by our emerging results in all curriculum areas. Congratulations to our E-Pro 8 team who engineered a moving great horned owl! Well done to Kyvarn, Lexie, Sophie and Adeezia. This term, we have also started Connect again, had an AED refresher training from Nick Smith - thanks Nick, have leap into learning for all four year olds, school photos, trap building, a visit to Lake Rotokare, and much more! Check out our school Facebook page for more updates.

Waverley Primary School Dear Parent/Caregivers Kia Ora Koutou, Firstly, welcome back to everyone after the holiday break, I hope you managed to have some down time during the term 3 holidays. Special welcome to the six new students that have joined us for the rest of the 2020 school year and beyond. These new student enrolments puts the school roll back above 100 which is very exciting for everyone in the Waverley Primary School and Community. The two Mathex teams who competed in Wanganui on Wednesday 14th October did a great job. Thanks to the parents who supported the teams and helped with transport. Also huge congratulations must go out to the Waverley Year 7&8 Rippa Rugby teams that narrowly lost the final of the Whanganui Year 7&8 Rippa Rugby Tournament on Friday 16th October. Unfortunately St Joseph’s from Taihape scored a try in the last seconds to win the match. I am very proud of you all not only for the way you played but also the way you represented yourselves, your school and your community! This week with the School newsletter there are some surveys about the school’s strategic direction and the rebranding of the school’s values. It is extremely important that you fill out these surveys and have your say about the schools direction. Every survey that is returned will put you in the draw for a $50 petrol voucher which will be drawn on the 30th October. Finally, a reminder that the school will be closing at 2:30pm on Thursday (22nd) next week to allow the staff to attend a professional development course in Normanby. The course is on Relationship Based Learning which is about strengthening teacher /student relationships to increase student outcomes. Tim Marriott, Principal Tawa Hub in their Inquiry topic have been investigating ‘people who help us in emergencies’. They have been learning about what to do in a fire emergency at home and at school. Making connections to their community has been a focus and the Junior Hub’s were fortunate enough to visit our local Waverley Fire Brigade in Week One of Term Four. The children learnt about the different ways that the Waverley Fire Brigade can help them in their community.
