Noughts & Crosses game in Memorial Park

Patea Rugby & Sports Club 2020 Rugby Season

Colin Schrader from Patea Lions Club has constructed a sturdy and stylish timber noughts and crosses game for young and old to play in the Memorial Garden behind the Waka. So many people stop to take a photo of the Waka, and now they will have a reason to stay longer and play a game while they are there. This was installed before the lockdown, so has been out of bounds for a while, but now we are in level 2 you can challenge your family and friends to a game. Thank you so much for giving this to our town Colin.

After careful consideration, the Patea Rugby & Sports Club Committee has decided to not field any Senior or Junior teams in the 2020 Taranaki Rugby competitions, except for the Under 13 team. In a normal season rugby would be well underway and scheduled to finish in mid-July, prior to the beginning of calving for most farmers. However, due to the interruptions caused by Covid-19 the start of Rugby for the 2020 season is still unconfirmed. Proposed start dates for the season have been discussed by Taranaki Rugby Football Union, which are subject to the New Zealand Government moving the country into Alert Level One. These dates would mean rugby would be running over the calving period. The Committee has consulted with its players, coaches and supporters and due to the timing of the proposed season feel we would not be able to field teams with enough players to put together teams to participate in a meaningful competition. If Junior players are still interested in playing in the 2020 season, Southern Rugby Club has offered to host these players for 2020. If you would like to play for Southern please contact our Junior Convenor Thomas Werder. We will be in contact with all our Junior players shortly to discuss whether you would like a refund of your subs or would instead like to use your subs to purchase a Patea Junior playing jersey. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Thomas Werder on 027 371 1405. Despite the club not participating in the 2020 competition, the Committee has decided to host a Club Day on Saturday 27th June. All club players, supporters and sponsors are invited to come along and participate in the day. There will be a Rippa Rugby Tournament, Under 13’s Game, BBQ food available to purchase, auctions and the bar will be open. More details about the Club Day will be posted on our Facebook Page. We understand everyone’s disappointment in this decision, but feel it is best for the players and the club. We look forward to having a strong season in 2021.

South Taranaki Schools reopen under COVID-19 level 2

It's great to see South Taranaki schools reopening under Level 2 and the amount of time and effort that has gone into ensuring our young people are safe. As we all learn to live in a 'new normal' it's vital our children understand physical distancing and how to keep each other, and their whanau, safe. This lovely photo is from Whenuakura School - there are stories and photos from most local schools in this issue for you to enjoy. For more information on COVID-19 and the alert levels - and what they mean for you and those around you - go to www.covid19.govt.nz

with delight at the knowledge that as we celebrate a period of time in our lives, we rejoice, we remember the beginnings of the reason for this celebration. Wedding anniversaries; where did you meet? Can you still remember the day, the weather, where exactly were you and of course those intimate moments peculiar to you. But amazing how this day of remembrance can trigger a lot of memories that have taken a seat way back in the mind! 30, 40 years plus, it makes no difference does it? You will always remember some moment that you celebrate every set day, month of every year with joy. My wife and I have just celebrated such an event, but it was not our wedding or any other family type happening. this was something so magnificent, it kinda whirls you around in a safe way and it has never faded or lost its presence in our lives. I’m referring to the day, the very hour, where, who, everything that my senses remember with awe and wonder. The day in question is the day both my wife and I were “born again”. Now I imagine this will strike a weird note or some such thought within you at such a brazen statement, but to us it’s a day that we look forward to celebrating because it was without doubt the biggest and most powerful life changing event, so powerful that, even after 31 years, the magnitude and presence of Mighty God in both our lives has never been diminished! Time is always a good yard stick to ensure if what you have done was a good thing or not. Now I speak only for myself, rthere is no way in the world I could keep up some religious charade Sunday after Sunday, pretending to be religious and hoping I’m fooling not only myself but you as well! Because that’s all religion is; a set of rules, do’s and don’ts, conform to some church’s rules and all’s sweet, ask and questions or doubt and you’re out. My Christianity has had to stand the test of time, it has had to be proven powerfully life changing true, otherwise I would have walked away! There is no way I would conform to rules and regulations that tell me whether I can celebrate my birthday or not, no presents? What! My anniversary is based on truth, God’s truth, the truth about His Son Jesus Christ dying for my sins (and yours!) and most definitely true, His being raised from the dead and now seated in the Heavenly realms, victorious. Jesus told a leader of the Jewish people who had quietly snuck out to meet Jesus late one night, this man Nicodemus said to Jesus: “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the miraculous signs you are doing if God were not in Him”. Jesus declared, “I tell you the truth, unless a man is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God”. This expression of being born again is primarily focused on our spirit man, which in most has gone very dull. We are a spirit being with soul living in a body, the body will one day finally wear out and we will be left with just a soul (our heart and mind) and most importantly our spirit being. That’s why the expression ‘born again’ refers to our spirit man being awakened; trust me, when it is and only is awakened by acknowledging Jesus Christ as Saviour and of course turning away from your sinful ways. You will turn away because the presence of Jesus in your spirit will

enable you to, otherwise you will be trying to be good and, let’s face it, that doesn’t last for very long, does it? That’s why it’s probably hard to understand … until it happens! What an anniversary!! What a celebration, knowing that death has no victory over you, your name is written in God’s book and that’s worth another celebration! C’mon now, ask God the hard question! Get answers for yourself, don’t rely on a church or some such thing to give you the answers, ask Jesus, he will meet you powerfully and your spirit man can be and will be born again…it has to! No charades, no pretenses, just God’s truth. While I’m on a roll, here’s another truth that Jesus spoke, He said, “I am the way, the truth and the life”. No there’s been a lot of pretenders who claim they are right but, rest assured, nobody has ever stood up in public and made such a powerfully honest statement like Jesus did and has never been proved to have lied, there’s another celebration! Amen. Come Lord Jesus Ted Reeves, Patea

Kakaramea School together we achieve

Wow, we have had a wonderful return to school after Lockdown. Our tamariki were so excited to see each other again, rekindle friendships and explore the school grounds. Kakaramea School would just like to tautoko our amazing parents and whanau members for stepping up to the home-learning challenges and being such active participants in their child’s learning and wellbeing over this unprecedented time in our lives. Thank you for your support! Ka pai to our superstar Lockdown Learners for going above and beyond in their home learning.

This exhibition is inspired by the publication Tales & Taonga of South Taranaki. The taonga on display are from the collections of Aotea Utanganui; some are featured in the book and some are interesting pieces rarely seen, hidden in the storerooms – all have historical significance to South Taranaki. This exhibition is on now and runs until February 2021

Whenuakura School - Growing Personal Excellence What a strange world we have been living in for the past couple of months. It is so good to be back at school, and to see everyone again. Our learners are all very excited to be seeing their friends again and have settled back into school routines so quickly. We are so impressed with how adaptable everyone has been. Thank you to all of our families for your understanding, help and participation in all that we have been achieving during lockdown and the five weeks of distance learning. You were all amazing - coping with children at home, work commitments, staying healthy, becoming “teachers” and the frustrations which came with a lot of this. On the other hand, it has been amazing for lots of us to reconnect with our families in our bubbles, slow our lives down and reprioritize. This is something we are going to try to continue with as we return to what we understand to be a “normal” lifestyle. It was exciting to be able to share our learners' achievements on the various online platforms with extended family, grandparents and friends - wherever in the world they were. We really enjoyed - and appreciated reading the comments and feedback. Welcome back Jo England who has returned to teach in the Tuakana Hive two days per week after being on maternity leave. It is great to have you back Jo!

This term (and just before lockdown) we welcomed Jay, Dylan and Archie to school. These guys have embraced Whenuakura School with great enthusiasm, and we welcome them as they continue their learning journey. The first weeks back at school have seen all learners fully engaged, with our emphasis on relationship building, settling back into school smoothly and getting used to being all together again. This has been reflected by lots of wonderful observations in the playground - picking and eating feijoas, caterpillar finding, sandpit construction, soccer skills, building with fallen branches, seniors encouraging and looking after juniors, tree climbing, learners using their imagination, and lots of playing together. Science, earthquake drills and butterfly madness have all been incorporated into our first weeks back. As we continue working through term two, we reflect a lot on our lives during a pandemic, and how this has impacted on us all. We are reminded that we work with enthusiastic young people who make teaching and learning an absolute joy. Enjoy some photos from our first few weeks back at school. Whenuakura School

Principals Update Welcome to term two, this has been a term like no other! As a country we have successfully navigated alert levels 4 and 3 and now find ourselves in the position to beat COVID-19. However, the fight is not over and we still have some work to do. As a school we have worked hard to provide learning opportunities for our students while in lockdown and I would like to take the time to thank all my staff for going above and beyond. We delivered 117 devices to homes during the lockdown, developed a learning portal on our website, and participated in hundreds of zoom meetings. I feel very fortunate to have been surrounded by such a great team. I would also like to acknowledge all the effort that whānau have put into learning from home. It’s not easy trying to juggle household duties and working from home, all while trying to get children to their zoom meetings. I witnessed first-hand the joy students got from being able to interact with their teachers and peers over the internet. I also saw how hard parents worked trying to get the devices and applications running. It was also great to see some of the images and stories families shared with us via Facebook. So, what does school look like at level 2? For the most part it is unchanged. Students still do the same learning, work with their wonderful teachers, and get to hang out with their friends. However something will not be the same. Hygiene and handwashing have very much become the norm. Physical distancing now needs to be an ingrained habit and contract tracing is now a part of everyday life. School trips and sporting activities will also look differently. Schools are still working with sporting organisations to figure out exactly what sport will look like and we will keep you posted on developments. Students will also participate in less offsite activities. Some small groups will continue to learn outside the classroom but it will be much more controlled. Whole day course is being modified to fit the current situation. NCEA students will focus on getting their credits, while other students will participate in a variety of fun and engaging activities. While many things have changed our focus and vision has not. We are here to support and grow good people for a changing world. Never has that vision seemed more applicable. Stay safe, be kind and look after one another. James Davidson, Principal Patea Area School

Waverley Primary School Exciting things have been happening at Waverley Primary School. Waverley Primary School welcomes new staff members: The second term has started very well at Waverley Primary school particularly with regard to our staffing. We have appointed three new staff and all are locals who have strong connections with the school. Our new Deputy Principal is Hannah Lupton who has previously been the Deputy Principal at Bulls school and that experience will be of great value to our school. Hannah has also worked at Waverley as a reliever so has a sound knowledge of our community and its families. Hannah's experience will be of great value to our school. We welcome Megan Buchanan and Renee Munro who will both be working one day a week at the school. Both are from the community and previously have worked as teacher aids. Having new staff with strong local knowledge and relationships is great for our school community. Welcome to our new five year old students

Jimmy, Latrey, Elijah, Ed, Avaa-Lee & Aaliyah-Jade. We also welcome Simone and Attahua too. You have all made an excellent start to school life! Tawa Hub: In Tawa Hub the students have been making the most of the frosty mornings and have been writing descriptively about what they can see and feel on these mornings. They have been enjoying exploring with dye in their art lessons. All students from Tawa Hub were excited to get back to school, start their learning routines and to see all their friends.

Our sport can never even acknowledge them enough. The ladies all over the country who feed and water everyone, we may appear to take them for granted but the appreciation of the hospitality, in often makeshift cookhouses, is just beyond expression. Our Club gives many thanks to the property owners, sheep owners Danny McGee and Sutton Potts, Leith and Margaret Harrop and our volunteer workers whom we are truly grateful. Kia Ora Koutou Everyone, It’s been great to welcome back the majority of our students this week, it’s so great to see smiling happy faces returning to school. We’ve had a great week of transitioning back to school with tabloid sports, outdoor learning experiences and art. Again, I acknowledge and thank you for your incredible support of your children and our teachers with our distance learning programme. We have all learnt a lot over this time! Schools have received clear guidelines regarding health and safety expectations during Alert Level 2. These have all been implemented. Thanks for signing in and out if you have entered the school building. This term we will continue to focus on ‘This is us’ in our concept learning. We will continue with our Monday Momentum sessions which focus on our school DRIVE values of Determination, Respect, Initiative, Virtue and Empathy. Waitotara School Flag Isn’t our new flag fabulous! We can’t wait to show it off at Interschool events.

patrolling the streets at this Level 4 Stage of Covid plan. But the problems are still out there on the streets, the main one is roaming dogs, in both Pātea and Waverley. During lockdown it is difficult for dog ranger to get out, but details of roaming dogs should still be logged to the Council: 0800 111 323. Also Sgt Stilton has advertised the position of a Policeman to be stationed in Pātea. - Phil Waite reported back about the continuing blocked drainage and concrete leeching issue with Waka. He is trying to source a sealer paint to paint the inside, but as Rob pointed out, there is also a problem with water not being able to get away from the inside of the Waka when it rains. The one existing drainpipe seems to be blocked. Phil will report back about this issue.

In Matters Arising: - The complaint from Gary Murphy about the excessive use of herbicide spray by Council contractor; Fulton Hogan in his ‘no spray zone’ street was discussed. Fulton Hogan reported back that they have strict guidelines about wind speed and amount and type of spray used and will ensure that these are enforced better in future. - Pātea Sports Club are continuing with a feasibility study for the upgrade to their facilities. This is a large and important project for our town and Kate Murdoch and committee are progressing with plans, location, funding options in a concise and calculated way, they will keep us informed in the months ahead. - The rock that Ruth Mackay spoke about at the last meeting, to go at Pātea Beach lookout, is at Noel McColl’s. He will locate it to the position required when we have decided. Rob suggested that Tilt Energy wind farm be asked to contribute to this project, as the Lookout is in the line of sight of their Wind monitoring pole. Janine has got examples and prices of a sign post and multiple signs to go on the rock. They will show the distance to places like Cape Reinga, London, Calcutta, New York, Bluff. - Liam Dagg is dealing with the truck vibrations complaints from Sue McKenzie in Waverley at the last meeting, it is probably a crushed culvert near Waverley Primary School and this is an NZTA issue. The problem of speeding traffic through Waverley has gone away with the Lockdown and the fact that there are very few cars on the road. This will sadly probably become a problem again when life gets back to normal and we will pursue it again. - Janine is getting prices and styles of signage to replace the broken information signs on the Pātea River Walkway. She will consult with the Tree Planting Trust when the Lockdown is lifted. The Community Bd is also working with key stakeholders in relation to extending the River Walkway to continue from the beach up past the Golf Course and come out at Victoria St. Waid told us that Walk and Cycle-ways are on the Council’s agenda for Community development in the near future, so that is a positive prospect. - Community facilities report showed the Pātea Pool was closed for several days in the summer, due to the pump breaking down and abusive behaviour from some pool users to pool staff. Rob asked if there was a management plan in place for next season to remove and reprimand the offenders rather than close the pool for everyone. Phil informed us that there will be 2 staff on duty in all pools next season and this will be enforced. The Waverley and Pātea Pool will be getting routine maintenance in the winter and the Pātea Pool will be getting shade cloths and tiered seating. Jo also asked about the prospect of the Pātea Pool opening into the month of March next season, this depends on staffing availability. - Janine went to the Paepae committee meeting and they are keen to get the Paepae sign removed from its location in front of the Hunter Shaw Building. A new location for it is to be decided. Colin Schrader has installed the noughts and crosses game behind the Waka. Pātea Library Garden and seating is finished, with the Community Board funded water fountain in it. Unfortunately with the Lockdown this is now out of bounds. - Maria updated us on the project to have a shade area installed in Aotea Park, Waverley. Jack Rangiwahia is doing a plan and the Waverley Lions will install it. Funding will be sought from the discretionary fund. - Jo asked Phil for update on the inventory of the Waverley township gardens, what is council owned and what is not. This plan is still in progress. The daffodil gardens at the northern entrance to Waverley are full of weeds and it is hoped this will be tidied up before the bulbs flower. - Jacq updated on York St riverside clean-up project. Colin Schrader has been asked to quote for building a picnic table with bench seat on each side and a long bench with a back and arms, of macrocarpa from Mike Cole. These will have concrete pad under them for ease of mowing. These will be installed when Noel McColl has cleared the site. This will commence when Council project plan is released. - Gabrielle Belz has completed the painting of the park bench in the Green space across the road from Four Square, it looks so welcoming. She is hoping to do the one by the library after Lockdown level is lifted. - Library Report was read, and Pātea and Waverley Library were congratulated by the Board for the sterling work they have done with Zoom Book Club for kids and Books online etc during the Covid crisis. - Before the meeting closed Deputy Mayor Rob thanked the Council Staff for the extra work they have put in during these difficult times to keep us Board members in touch, and to keep the communities in South Taranaki informed, up to and during, Level 4 Lockdown that were are currently in. He thanked Mayor Phil for his weekly updates to via email to us on Boards and to the public via Facebook. These are unprecedented times and even though we are apart, we are also in touch in many ways. He also thanked our Library staff for being a big part of the communication link to residents in our districts.

Seventy-five years since the end of WWII On 8 May 2020 it was 75 years since Victory was declared in Europe, it later became known as VE Day. Although fighting continued in the Pacific for another four months and WWII didn’t officially end until 2 September 1945. Almost 12,000 NZ soldiers were killed in action during the five long years of War. Our smaller settlements of Kakaramea, Alton, Manutahi, Hurleyville, Whenuakura and Waitotara all have fairly accurate Roll of Honour lists, including those that returned. But Patea and Waverley have only the names of those killed in action – not those that returned. For the past few years we have been trying to compile a list of these names, and record some of the fascinating stories of these soldiers experience in wartime. If you can help us with more names of Patea, Kakaramea, Alton, Manutahi, Hurleyville, Whenuakura, Waverley or Waitotara Soldiers that served during the years of WWII, can you please send details on an email to: jacq@dwyer.co.nz. If you want to see the lists of names we have so far of those that survived both World Wars, have a look at our website: https://www.pateahistoricalsociety.org. nz/ So far we have 210 names for Patea and 150 for Waverley. In passing, the attached American engineers made a start that night, by corduroying the approaches, with an alternative bridge about 150 yards north of the other one. Lieutenant Menzies, who had been maintaining liaison by means of a wireless truck stationed at 28 Battalion headquarters, passed on a message to Lieutenant Brown that he was to take his party and sweep a 16 ft lane from the Main Rapido bridge to Demolition 10, also to prepare a walking track with Bangalores and jelly rope26 as far as Demolition 12. The rest of No. 3 Platoon arrived before the work was finished and widened the lane from the river to the station yards to 24 feet, in addition to building a culvert with railway sleepers in Demolition 12. Lieutenant Gowan brought one of his dozers along and graded down the sides of Demolitions 11 and 12.
