New $2.1 million Waverley Water Treatment Plant The taps were turned on and water started flowing through Waverley’s new $2.1 million Water Treatment Plant last week. South Taranaki District Mayor, Phil Nixon says he was extremely pleased to see the plant completed and operational as Waverley had been experiencing some issues with the town water supply. “The Council has been working to address this and has built a new $2.1 million water treatment plant for the town. The new Waverley Plant will help ensure the town has safe drinking water that fully meets the Drinking Water Standards for New Zealand. Fiona Aitken, South Taranaki District Council (STDC) group manager of community and infrastructure services, says the new water treatment plant uses several processes to remove both organic and inorganic matter (like iron and manganese compounds) and bacteria from the water, including using ultraviolet light to kill protozoa and any residual bugs. Chlorination and fluoridation are also part of the treatment process. Taranaki DHB’s medical officer of health, Dr Jonathan Jarman, congratulates the Council on the completion of Waverley’s new water treatment plant. Dr Jarman says safe drinking water is something that we all take for granted. “Problems with drinking water supplies can be very disruptive and in a worst case scenario can cause a lot of illness very quickly. It is really good to see the investment that the South Taranaki District Council has made to protect the health of people in Waverley.”

Warning Sign Installed The Pātea Community Board paid for the installation of a warning sign for Mana Bay at Pātea Beach made and installed by Cameron Hurley of Zodiac Signs. Since the near drowning in January 2020 of 3 girls, courageously saved by visiting surfer Michael Grendon, the Board had wanted to put a sign warning of dangerous under-currents. This has now been done and is situated near to one of the life rings at Mana Bay. We want people that go into the water to be aware of the dangerous under-currents, especially near the river mouth, that can quickly take swimmers out to sea.

Archivist Joins Aotea Utanganui Amber Wright has recently joined the team at Aotea Utanganui Museum of South Taranaki as Technical Archivist. Although Amber has been in Australia for the past year, her roots are here in Taranaki so the Patea-based museum, with its rich South Taranaki archives material is a dream role. Amber, from Ōpunakē, brings with her seven years of collection management in the museum sector, combined with a Bachelor of Media Arts and Visual Arts. Her experience in the field consists of time at Puke Ariki as a Collection Technician - Taonga Maori, Digital Technician, and Curator Archives; and Yarra Ranges Regional Museum in Victoria, Australia as an Exhibitions Installer, Cultural Development Officer and Collections Officer.

Water Fountains Increase Wellbeing Another project that the Pātea Community Board have completed recently is a new filtered drinking water fountain at the Pātea LibraryPlus. It can also be used to refill drink bottles, and will hopefully encourage people to reuse plastic drink bottles and reduce waste. The drinking fountain is set in the new seating area the Council installed in the summer in front of the facility. There are two tables with seating around them, with raised gardens planted in colourful plants. It’s a peaceful area to sit and eat lunch, read a book or hook into the free wifi. Waverley also had a drinking fountain installed last year outside the LibraryPlus.

DEADLINE: all copy to be handed in by 26 July for August 2020 issue.

Celebrate! Here’s a word with several meanings, but one in particular stands out: to have a lively and happy time! Birthdays are one such occasion, let’s face it … presents make anyone happy. To come into a place of celebrations gets anyone’s attention, a sense of joy permeates the place and you are caught up in the celebration. Perhaps we don’t celebrate enough, being lively and happy, perhaps the heaviness of life is too big to allow joy/happiness to express itself within you. That’s kind sad, isn’t it? I mentioned last month about my spiritual birth … being born again, this causes exceedingly great joy within me even when I’m having a “bad hair day”! The beauty of this occasion is that I do not have to generate a happy face to convince myself, celebrating is beautiful, as when a Sunday worship is just that – worship, singing praise and worship to the All mighty Jesus Christ is absolutely wonderful, truth is you cannot stop! It continues throughout the week as well, it never fades away. We need to celebrate that which is good and it’s also a means of expressing our gratitude at the event. I’m not going to mention some celebrations that are going on in the world today, truth is they are not nice at all, I think that when we begin to celebrate evil we have started to lose the plot … so to speak. Celebrating is a joy and delight, and a beautiful memory perhaps, either way it’s our expression of gratitude and thanks. Throughout the Bible celebrations are required by God to help us to remember all the good He has done, be it the birth and death and resurrection of His only begotten Son, the recorded accounts of Him bringing His people out of slavery and into a place of security by giving them all the land God promised them, as we know of Israel today. There were special occasions to be remembered for generations to come, like the night before they left Egypt, the Passover, all the miraculous powers God did to show everyone that He alone is God almighty and there are no other Gods! That’s why Christians celebrate, sing praises to God Almighty, remembering not only creation being established by God, but all of us being made in His likeness. When we come to Jesus and confess our sins and we know that God has removed all condemnation – we’re innocent! What a celebration! It gets even better … the biggee!! Death, “where O death is your sting? Where O death is your victory?” we can rejoice and celebrate in this event that yes we are mortal and eventually die, but that’s not the end for a believer in Jesus Christ, there is eternity, for ever and ever being in God’s presence. Sometimes we get just a touch of this expectation and it causes celebration, something that is triggered by confirmation by God to us that it is not a “fairy tale” as some would believe. Again, I have to reiterate on last month’s letter, meeting with God Almighty has to be experienced and can be if you want all that God has promised, and God does not break His word! It is written! If you like to consider things then here’s one for you – why are we here? What is the purpose of our existence? To birth babies and then grow old and die? How come this beautiful creation sustains us, how come we respect other’s property

and lives? The list goes on and on does it not? Sometime in life we have to address these questions and get the truth, not what someone else has spouted, because your life is at stake – seriously! It passes the joke stage and knocks defiantly on the door of your heart, requiring the truth! Again, reminding us all about what Jesus said when He stood up and publicly proclaimed, “I am the way, the truth and the life” – a powerful declaration indeed. God can not lie! So celebrate, enjoy life’s moments, these will all pass away eventually, but God’s presence and promises never will. God calls all to come and celebrate with Him, to enjoy His presence in your life forever. Come Lord Jesus Ted Reeves, Patea

Maxwell & Districts Kindergarten

Kindergarten is open again and everyone is so happy to be back enjoying all of their favourite things. Although we were open during alert level 3 we only had a couple of children attending, so it is fantastic to be all together again. We have welcomed several new children and families over the past couple of weeks so if your child is on our waiting list they will be getting closer to the top! Remember if you would like to enrol your child with us just call in and fill out a form, or give us a call and we can send one out to you. We also have a Facebook page if you would like to see some photos of the children learning at Kindergarten. We have recently had an extension to our playground and we have this lovely new grassy space for the children to utilise. Earlier in the year the Whanganui Corrections Department had a group of people work on a project to construct a new Playhouse for the children. It is now in place on our new grass and the children are discovering all sorts of ways to use this new piece of equipment. Thanks to Alex and his team at the Whanganui office. The children are keen to play and learn in the outside environment in all weathers and we try to provide this whenever possible. There are not very many days that we cannot get out into the playground. Particular areas of interest at present are water exploration, the large sandpit and the swings. All of these areas offer the children the opportunity to learn a range of important skills for life, along with learning about their ability to learn and to develop a love of learning!

Notes from the meeting on Wednesday 3 June 2020, 4pm, provided by the Board Members. The fourth meeting for the year was held at the Waitotara War Memorial Hall, Kaipo St. Present were: Pātea Community Board members; Jacq, Dianne, Jo & Rob Northcott (Pātea Ward Councillor), Janine Maruera, (Community Development Officer), Phil Nixon (Mayor), Sara Dymond (PA), Claire Symes (Community Development Manager), Liam Dagg (Group Manager Environmental Services) and several members of the public. Open Forum: Allan Caple from Pātea Community Patrol updated us on the situation on the streets. They went back patrolling the streets again when we went down to level 2 on 13 May after being in complete Lockdown for 4 weeks. They now also patrol the grounds of Whenuakura and St Joseph schools at night. Allan also mentioned that fellow Comm Patrol man; Gary Murphy has come to an agreement with the spraying contractors, so this will protect his garden from spray drift in future. Laurie Mildenhall spoke to us on two issues of concern, the first being the continuing lack of progress on repairing the Waka. It has been over a year since the leaching concrete problem was identified. This is caused by incorrect sealing product and insufficient drainage from the base of the waka. The cavity that was cut into the front of the base of the monument is still there and a dark discharge is leaching out of it. Laurie, along with many locals is concerned that the integrity of the structure is being compromised with this inattention. Liam Dagg replied to this request for action from Laurie and will have information and hopefully a solution available for us at the next meeting. The other query from Laurie was that the clock on the Hunter Shaw building had stopped. Rob replied that this must have happened in the last couple of days, as he hadn’t noticed it. This will also be followed up with the Council maintenance team. Rob Northcott spoke on behalf of many local people that have requested action in regard to the constant problem of roaming dogs, in both Pātea and Waverley. A family dog was severely mauled in recent days and required veterinary care. And he knows of many people that are too scared to venture outside their own sections for exercise or recreation due to vicious dogs that have followed or attacked them. There were reports from Waverley residents that dogs are let out to forage for food at night. He implored that the roaming dog issue be taken seriously, and action be taken before a person was seriously injured from a dog attack. Meanwhile all residents are urged to log any dog incidents to the Council Call Centre: 0800 111 323. Cheryl and Brian Rook from the newly formed Waitotara Community Group presented their application for $600 from the Discretionary Fund for assistance for the Directional sign they want to install at Waiinui Beach. The sign will show distances to places like Hong Kong, London etc and will be a bit of a conversational piece for visitors to the beach. They also informed us of some of the other projects they are working on in the future. Jacq on behalf of the Patea Community Board presented their application for a warning sign for Mana Bay, costing $402-, to be made and installed by Cameron of Zodiac signs. Since the near drowning in January 2020 of 3 girls, courageously saved by Michael Grendon, the Board have wanted to put a sign warning of Dangerous under-currents near river mouth. This can now be achieved. Jacq on behalf of the Patea Community Board presented their application for funding for seating and picnic table ($1782.00) to be installed on the lawn area that will be created on York Street when the river side area is cleaned up. These will have concrete pads under them for ease of mowing and will be installed by Colin Schrader when Noel McColl has cleared the site. This will commence when the Council approves project plan is released. Matters Arising: A quote has been received for the Pātea Community Board Project of the Pātea Beach Lookout ‘Directional Signs’. Janine is now leading this project and will meet with Rob and Jacq to confirm the site of sign and rock etc soon. The Rural Hall Council grant will be open for applications on 30 June. Community Development, Information Report from Claire Symes: A Council Local Recovery team has been established to look at ways of supporting the community through the impact of Covid-19. The team has been considering what priorities are as we move forward, looking at long and short term solutions. An ‘Un-Covid Sth Taranaki’ Facebook page was set up and managed by the Community Development team throughout Lockdown and followed by over 600 people. An application was submitted to the NZTA Waka Kotahi Innovating Streets Pilot Fund for the co-design and implementation of temporary street treatments to slow down traffic in Waverley and Eltham. Speed, noise and safety have been an on going issue in these two towns in particular. Volunteers Day was adapted this year due to Covid, and instead a ‘Volunteer Hero’ concept will take place. Library Report was read. District children and Young adults Librarian; Pam Jones and Branch librarian; Katherine Bosworth are providing training to librarians throughout NZ on running virtual book clubs via zoom, hosted by LIANZA. So good to see the service the team are providing is ahead of many other libraries in NZ. LibraryPlus Officers have also been indexing Taranaki Family History collection books while they were working from home. Facilities Usage Report was read. Mayor Phil thanked the unsung heroes of Lockdown, for keeping things that had to happen, happening: the Rubbish collectors, transfer station operators, grave diggers, Lawn mowers, Library staff, Council call centre. Full minutes of this and all Council meetings can be found on the South Taranaki District Council Website, under the heading ‘Our Council’ then go to ‘Mayor & Elected members’ then ‘Community Board - Patea’. Or view them at Pātea or Waverley Library. Your Community Board Members are: Jacq Dwyer (Chair) Dianne Lance (Deputy Chair), Jo Peacock, Maria Ferris, Robert Northcott (Pātea Councillor) The meeting times & venues for this year are: Wednesday 15 July, 4pm, Hunter Shaw Building, Pātea Wednesday 26 August, 4pm, Hunter Shaw Building, Pātea Wednesday 7 October, 4pm, Waverley Community Centre, Chester St, Waverley Wednesday 18 November, 4pm, Alton Coronation Hall, 355 Ball Rd, Alton

Patea Old Folks Association

The Patea Old Folks Association has been in recess for two years and we have not met socially on a Tuesday since our AGM on the 8th of May 2018. However, we did hold another AGM on the 14th May 2019. Since then 8 members have passed away and three members have moved into Te Mahana Resthome so the time has come to permanently cease to function. However, that leaves us with a dilemma of the hall. We would like to see the building retained as a hall but that would necessitate a new committee being formed to maintain and administer the building. On the 14th July we will be having our AGM and invite all members of the public to attend and discuss the ongoing future of the building the community fought so hard to obtain for our residents. Please step up and help. Venue: Patea Old Folks Hall Date: Tuesday 14 July 2020 Time: 7pm

This exhibition is on now and runs until February 2021. The museum is open 10am4pm Monday to Saturday at 127 Egmont Street, Patea.

Waverley Primary School

Exciting things have been happening at Waverley Primary School: Waverley Primary School is currently re-establishing the PFA (Parent Friends Association). The meeting that was held and was very successful. Thank you very much to those who attended. It was very heartening to see such a good number of you interested in taking part. This organisation is not just a fundraising group but should also be a support group for activities such as, social functions, camps, reading programmes, pet days and productions. Another very positive happening has been the enrolment numbers at the new entrant level. Since the beginning of May we have had six new little people join us. I enjoy visiting the junior rooms and admire the work being done by Kaye Saunders and Hannah Boon as they build language and vocab with their students. This is an area where parents can give strong support just by talking to their children, expanding their vocab and building the correct language patterns. If good examples are not presented to them, children will not develop their language. The feedback in those two classrooms is constant and I am sure parents are recognising the good work that is being done. As we look forward to the rest of the year we are aware of more enrolments putting pressure on that new entrant area. This is a good problem to have and bodes well for the future. Ngā mihi nui Clive Rennie, Principal The seniors in Rimu Hub have been demonstrating their leadership skills by supporting the juniors in their reading and sporting skills.

Recently we had a lovely morning tea together as a staff to show our appreciation for our support staff at Waverley Primary School.

Patea Masonic Lodge give to Alton Church fund The Alton Community were recently presented with a cheque for $1,000 from the Patea Kilwinning Lodge for the resealing of the tiles on the Alton All Saints Church roof. The church is now under the ownership of the Alton Coronation Hall Committee, who were so grateful for this generous donation which was handed over on the 10th of June. Chum Sutherland's association with Alton goes back three generations, and it was so good to have Chum, his wife Val and sister Wayvne back in Alton for the afternoon to have a look around the newly renovated church, along with fellow Lodge members David and Alan. Next year it will be 150 years since the Patea Kilwinning Lodge began, it is heartening to see the philanthropic ideals of the Lodge are still continuing today, and our small rural settlements benefitting from their generosity. Whenuakura School - ‘Growing Personal Excellence’

Another busy few weeks has been had at school and we now head towards our school holidays. It has been a very different twelve-week term! Students have had many adjustments in this changing world and we really would like to acknowledge our Whenuakura families for being so adaptable and accepting of our new ideas and systems. Learners are settled and teachers are enjoying the extra time in our classrooms to plan meaningful and engaging learning activities. At the time of writing this, we are planning for our mid-year Learning Conversations, where we meet with each family to discuss progress, goals and aspirations for each learner as we move into the second half of the year. Some of our recent school highlights include more personalised lessons, collection of student voice about our classrooms, a visit from Ash the environmental educator from Lake Rotokare, visits from Sport Taranaki and also organisation around learning support. Puanga Shining - Celebrating Maori New Year in South Taranaki The South Taranaki District Council have been posting weekly challenges to our community. The first challenge was to write a rap, waiata or poem- which is what Kyvarn and Sofia did. These learners used their literacy and research skills to create something very special. They had to learn different parts of a song, what Puanga is, and how to write song lyrics. We are pretty proud of their hit single and especially proud as we had Janine Maruera visit from the Council to present them with their WINNING PRIZE! Congratulations to Kyvarn and Sofia - what an amazing effort. We are very impressed with your creative song writing, singing, confidence, and ‘can do’ attitude. If you haven't heard their waiata yet, head over to the school facebook page. You can also hear these two super stars being interviewed on the radio by Mz Leah from Te Korimako o Taranaki. Well done to the group of learners who did mahi whai and created stars from string. They had to follow instructions and persevere. Congratulations to Millie Harrison for winning this challenge out of all of South Taranaki! We are very proud of you. The latest challenge is to collaboratively create a piece of star themed artwork. Our clever and creative thinkers wanted to decorate a cake! Thank you Toni Stark for helping. They were very proud of their design and were excited to share it with the class. Our learners are being encouraged to constantly display our School CORE Values - Collaboration, Open and Adaptable, Respect and Excellence. We have started a reward system where staff will spot learners displaying CORE Values, and they will receive a coupon which goes into a weekly lucky draw. The students are making a huge effort and staff are noticing them striving to receive these coupons. Congratulations to all the winners from the last few weeks. Lake Rotokare Visit Recently we have had Ash Muralidhar from Lake Rotokare in our classes having a fun and informative visit all about the environment and predators. We were all very inspired by the work of Lake Rotokare and their knowledgeable and engaging educator Ash. Our learners loved meeting true to scale models of Paul and Pam the Possums, Stanley the Stoat, Frank the Ferret and Harry the Hedgehog. We hope everyone has a relaxing holiday break with their families and friends. We look forward to seeing you all back for another busy term on Monday 20th July.
