Patea Historical Society AGM President's Report Wednesday 15 July 2020

Ladies and Gentlemen I have much pleasure in presenting the 52nd annual Presidents Report of the Patea Historical Society. As I do every year I’d like to acknowledge the dedicated members of our Committee. We do have a lot of fun ‘Preserving & Promoting our Past’, and we all learn so much along the way. Our current Patea Historical Society team is: Jim Baker, Roy Hotter, Michael Parsons, Dave Crompton, Harvey Gibbs, Rob Groat, Joe Bourke & myself. And of course our patron; Howard Anderson. In our 53rd year the current membership of the society stands at 77 paid members. On 28th September last year our dear Bettie Howarth, the most amazing Treasurer and friend died. I don’t think there would be many organisations that have had the same treasurer since 1968, our meetings aren’t quite the same without her. She really is a legend, she left her post in good stead and we are doing our best to carry on without her. We will keep her in our thoughts as we have our meeting tonight. Our annual accounts have been audited by Hughson & Associates, our honorary auditor. Who have rented the Office behind our Freezing Works display Building since Laurie Gibbs retired. I have taken over as Treasurer since Bettie died and we have had to make a few changes to move with the times. We have moved to xero accounting system, which makes the GST much easier. And Jim, Dave and I now pay any bills online too. It requires 2 people to authorise a transaction, so its secure and works well. The Patea Historical Society supports Aotea Utanganui, our Museum, with two appointed members on the trust, Dave Crompton and Jim Baker. We continue to donate the usual annual operational funding of $3000 per year. I’ll now run through a few things that we were a part of since our last AGM… We had the opening of the beautiful Hunter Shaw building on Thursday 26 September last year, We were fortunate that the South Taranaki District Council saw the importance of earthquake strengthening and restoring this 90 year old building. So we didn’t have to protest about anything there, and they sort our assistance with various decisions in the process, which we were so pleased to be a part of. The Plunket rooms part of the building does have to be demolished and rebuilt, and the Council have agreed to close this section off until money can be found to do this. So much better than demolishing it without a plan to rebuild immediately. This entirety of this Category 2 building is important on Patea’s landscape.

We installed 3 Plaques to mark interesting places at the end of last year – Wilford Rd Creamery up at Hurleyville, Nukumai Park, near Gloucester St and the Wesylan Mission Station at 32 Norfolk St. We had a special unveiling and blessing of the Wesylan Mission Station site on 25 October 2019 by Rev Mele Prescott. Our next plaques will be to mark sites in the Opaku area. The 6 November 2019 marked 150 yrs since our local Pakakohi men were sent to Dunedin as prisoners of the Crown for over 2 years. Local historian Darren Ngarewa marked the day with a story of Facebook about that time in our past, and around that time we got our second print run of another 500 Salutary Punishment books, these tell the story of this time in our past, and continue to sell well. We were in the Patea Christmas parade last year, in Jim’s 1905 Darracq car, with Jim and I in the front dressed in vintage costume and Donna and grandkids in the back looking very cute. On 9 January this year we again hosted the Whanganui summer program – This year we visited Oika gunfighting Pa at Whenuakura, and looked over to the ridge-top Pa; Pamatangi, and across the road to Rangikura Pa. Darren Ngarewa was our guide for this first section. We then went onto Weraroa Redoubt and Pa. followed by Tutahi Church on the Nukumaru straight, with korero from Julian Broughton, and a warm welcome and afternoon tea at Tauranga ika Marae. On Saturday 15 February Waverley & Waitotara RSA commemorated 100 yrs at Dallison Park which we attended. Jim had his army vehicle there. It was also 100 years in 2019 since the Patea RSA was formed. Patea RSA are currently organising a large event to take place in Jan 2021 and I have put together a book for them, which will be available for sale at the end of this year. Like all organisations, we have been affected by the outbreak of Covid-19. We had to postpone fieldtrip we were going to do with Heritage Taranaki to Wai o turi, Otautu and the Patea Dam and Kuranui Pa which was to be on 21 March. Our tour leader was Ivan Bruce and he made the call to call it off. Five days after this we were in lockdown level 4. The second Heritage Week run by Hawera Genealogy was also cancelled. ANZAC Day still happened, but none of us really crossed paths and as a country we joined together in other ways. The Patea and Alton War Memorial in particular had a good number of wreaths on them. We paid for Anderson Memorials to re-instate the headstone of Mary Ball at the Patea Cemetery, it had broken off its plinth years ago and laid a couple of rows back from where it should have been. Mary was the wife of early settler James Ball. James is buried in Whanganui, but Mary chose to be buried in Patea next to their son that died in infancy. Anderson’s donated a new plaque for the Boer War Memorial outside the museum, the old one had become unreadable. We donated $3000 to Hawera Genealogy for digitalizing another section of the Hawera Normanby Star. Something that will benefit so many people. The re-printing of Heartland of Aotea by the late Ian Church is a project we have been working on since our last AGM. Before Ian died in 2013 he updated his original 1991 version of the book adding more content and images. He then entrusted it with Kelvin Day, who has spent the past year editing it, and then passed it on to book designer Caitlin Finnerty. Lysaght Watt Trust have generously contributed with funding this publication and we know it will be well received. Its due back from the printers in the next two months. Once again we have had a busy year. We start off the year wondering what’s going to happen, and by the end of it, are as usual amazed at what we’ve done! We really appreciate all of you PHS members supporting us by paying your subs, finding us old photos and info, and turning up when we have events, you are all a valuable part of this Society, so thank you for your input. After our meeting you will be able to look around the latest exhibition here at the museum - Tales and Taonga – a book coinciding with this exhibition will be available here soon too. A very big thankyou to Luana and Bronwyn for allowing us to have the AGM here tonight. Jacq Dwyer President of Patea Historical Society

Well I try not to get into politics, but I’m going to this time! So the Government can get a referendum going as to whether marijuana can be made legal? Why not? Those who choose to smoke “pot” have already got their supply sorted, so whether it is legal or not, nothing is going to change. Considering NZ is going to be “smoke free” by 2025 …? Yeah right. So this is my political slant today, if something as “passive” as deciding if pot is legal or not is done through our involvement i.e. a referendum, then I need to ask you all this – how come murdering babies in the womb does not require our vote? How come we have a government that can make these life decisions on our behalf that I would “guess” the majority of NZ does not agree with! We have now gotten to a stage in our history that we are throwing all the foundations of our ancestors out the door, those ancestors who risked their lives in battle to maintain some form of decency and law and order! They would never think such things as abortion, who’s hearts had God’s law written on them and they listened to God … not anymore! What’s next? (As a member of the retiree mob … I should perhaps keep quiet, cause it costs the taxpayer millions of dollars per year to keep us hobbling along!) God’s word clearly states in Galations 6 v 7&8; “Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the spirit, from the Spirit will reap Eternal Life”. There are going to be consequences! Will those woman who have had an abortion, say because the baby has a club foot, 30 years from now how will they be feeling? I think there will be major regrets and I do feel very sorry for them to have to go through that … what are we doing to our self? Is the glory of being famous or rich or on top of the heap that important that we neglect human decency? Morals go out the door, Govt’s make laws that are contrary to God’s law, we are definitely not above God’s laws. We’re in a heap of trouble … big trouble. But thanks be to Jesus Christ who through God Almighty has given all of us a way out of these predicaments… Jesus. All who call out to Him and ask for forgiveness of all our sins will be saved from death, our sins will be removed from us as far as the east is from the west, no more condemnation! We can be saved, there still is time for everyone to come to their senses and repent! Or suffer the consequences of our choices. God cannot be mocked, what you sow you will reap! This is very serious, it’s not some pie in the sky means to keep you in line. Realize that because God loves us He gives us our individual sovereignty (and time), we get to choose with no pressure whatsoever from God, but be aware you will be judged on this decision of yours. Repent for the day is near!! Very near. The day Jesus comes back to judge all mankind, it’s called consequences from all our actions! Come Lord Jesus Ted Reeves, Patea

Patea Bowling Club We would like to thank the TSB Community Trust for their $10,000 grant which went towards the cost of exterior repainting of the clubrooms and equipment shed renovation. This is very much appreciated and an asset to the community. The club also decided at this time to renovate exterior seating around the greens and further repainting of Club exterior assets.

A further thank you to Sports NZ Resilience Fund for their $1000 grant which helped us cover ongoing costs during COVID-19 lockdown. Patea Bowling Club playing season is due to start in early September, date to follow. At this time to club will be open Wednesdays as usual, and Saturdays instead of the usual Fridays. The change in days should allow the Club to open earlier for our opening day tournament and twilight bowls, which will be open to the public. So come along and enjoy some bowling, food, drinks and the odd party! A final thanks to Mark of C&C Fixers for repairing the leak in the Clubrooms roof free of charge.

Waitotara School - Achieving Together

Welcome to Term 3. Hopefully we have resumed a degree of normality for this term! As staff we have been reviewing our practices since COVID 19 and will be trialling some changes to our classroom and school over the term. We’ve got another exciting term planned around our topic ‘Planet Green’, which will have a science focus of the Living World. We will be exploring habitats and our local surroundings. We have Ash Muralidhar from Rotokare Scenic Reserve visiting our school on the 23rd July to teach us about predators and trapping, birds and plant regeneration. We have been implementing the structured literacy approach through the school and are seeing pleasing results with our students reading. We have begun a new spelling programme throughout the school which focuses on phonics and spelling rules. We continue to maintain our relationships with our Cluster schools - Ngamatapouri, Kai Iwi, Mosston, Westmere, Brunswick and Faith City and teachers have upcoming professional development within the cluster this term and students will be participating in cluster events also. We are very fortunate to work with the great students at Waitotara School. We promote our DRIVE values of Determination, Respect, Initiative, Virtue and Empathy and are proud of how our students strive to achieve these I want to thank our hardworking and dedicated teachers, support staff, BOT, parents and community volunteers for making our school a great place for children to learn.

Waverley Playcentre A lot has happened since our last article in the paper! We shut down for COVID-19 March 20, and didn’t start back until May 20th so we were away for 2 months! During that time the children got to spend some quality time with their family and also learnt some new skills! We had an Easter raffle running before the lockdown that we drew once we were back. Congratulations to Martina Hickey who won this. We hope you enjoyed all that chocolate!! The children were glad to come back to Playcentre to see their friends and get out of the house and just to be somewhere different. We had a fairly quiet Term 2, as we were just getting back into the swing of things and learning our new normal for Playcentre. We had lots of fun with indoor obstacle courses, jumping, going under and over and hiding in them! We received our Duffy books which we were supposed to get at the beginning of the term but because of COVID they were delayed. The children are lucky enough to recieve two books which they can take home and share with their family. The children love it when they get their books and want to read them right away!! On the nicer days we were outside enjoying the sandpit with diggers, trucks, wheelbarrows, you name it, it was in there!! They also raced around the bike track on their bikes. The trampoline has been another big hit with the kids playing games like “crack the egg” and what not. We also had a special visiter to Playcentre. Scarlett bought in her pony for all the children to see, pat and have rides! The children really loved this. Thankyou Megan for organising this! We were invited to quite an exciting thing on our last Wednesday of the term. It was a secret to everyone who went, which made the excitement even more enjoyable to see. Waverley Primary School invited us to their school field to watch an Airforce Helicopter arrive! It was an A109 Helicopter. The kids loved watching it fly around above us and land on the field, they then were lucky enough to go and sit in the helicopter and have a close up look at it. We feel very privileged to be invited to see this and would like to thank Waverley Primary School for inviting us. We are now in Term 3 and the children are glad to be back after two weeks holiday. They have had a great few sessions catching up with their friends, doing some paintings and enjoying some indoor play on the wetter and colder days. We love seeing new families at our Playcentre, everyone is welcome! If your interested in joining us come and take advantage of our three free sessions to see if it’s for you. We are open Wednesday’s & Friday’s 9am - 12pm.

Waverley Primary School Exciting things have been happening at Waverley Primary School: The last week of term 2 we had an exciting experience with the arrival of an A109 helicopter from Ohakea. This visit had been set up by Mrs Sanson, when as part of the careers programme for her class (Y7 & 8 students), she had invited Pilot Officer Sam Stewart to talk about being a pilot. Sam was able to do better than just visit and speak, he was able to bring a team travelling by helicopter. With Sam came Pilot Corey, Co-pilot Haylee, Maintenance person (mechanic) Marie, and photographer Naomi. Our students were surprised at what jobs are available in the air force, and that girls can do the sort of work being done by our visitors. Their individual stories also presented our students with some of the realities of the world. Haylee had failed to make it when she first applied for the air force, but was determined to make it, so, put in the hard work to lift her mathematics to the level required. Hopefully our students took on board that lesson. Our students also learnt that you can acquire qualifications free through the forces, but getting selected so you can take advantage of this privilege, you have to have been successful at school. Having a helicopter land at school also gave us the opportunity to invite other groups to enjoy what was an unusual experience. The Playcentre parents came over despite it being a cold morning. We have also had a landscape specialist, Will Whelan, who has moved into our Waverley community is coming in to help the students put together a plan for the area beside the swimming pool. This too is part of the careers programme and Mrs Sanson can be very pleased and proud of how our students have involved themselves in these two opportunities. It is very important that students who have spent all their schooling in Waverley get to know what jobs and vocations are out there, that they lift their sights and are motivated to know that through application anything is possible. The interaction with our visitors by our students was great to see.

Kauri Hub: Our school wide Term 2 Inquiry - Te Whānau Mārama - captured the interest of all of our tamariki. The students were thoroughly engaged in all aspects of the learning about space, sharing what they had discovered at home with their families. Kauri Hub students enjoyed completing a variety of literacy activities about space, including researching and writing information reports on the planets in our solar system. They also loved participating in a range of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) challenges with Rimu Hub and creating pieces of artwork about the universe. We look forward to celebrating Puanga/ Matariki when we return after the school holidays.

Patea Golf Club July 2020 Shootout day The first shootout day was played on Saturday 4th July and good weather conditions prevailed. 10 members started and when Gerald Rutten took 2 chips to make the first green, he was the first player eliminated. Five players we involved in a chip off on the second hole and when Steve Honeyfield failed to make the green he was eliminated. On the third hole Roger Edgecombe was eliminated in a putt off and Nick Williams stayed alive. A missed short putt on the 4th green and Phil Cassidy was eliminated. On the 5th green 3 players were in the putt off but Jeff Bright was the player eliminated. On the 6th green Nick Williams was too light on a short putt and he was eliminated. On the 7th green Josh Paerata failed to make par and was eliminated. On the eighth hole a putt off was required. Both players were close, but Cyril Faiers was eliminated. The final two players left to play the 18th hole were Robert Bourke and Ray Finlay. Unfortunately, Ray put his drive in the lake off the tee and had to take a one -shot penalty. Robert played the hole well and secured a nett par to win the shootout. Well done Robert. Logan Trophy This was a 2-ball best ball par competition played over 18 holes on Saturday 11th July. Windy conditions prevailed and the air was heavy, so it was tough winter going. Steve Honeyfield and Jeff Bright managed nett pars on the last 13 holes and they won the Logan Trophy being 2 up on par. Second in the competition were Josh Paerata and Gerald Rutten 1 up on par and third were Mark Hawken and Ray Finlay 1 down on par. Best individual score on the day was Stephen Hughes with a nett 74. Drawn twos went to Ray Finlay and Nick Williams Black & White Cup This was an individual 18 hole nett competition and once again tough winter conditions prevailed on Saturday 18th July. Roger Edgecombe with a nett 74 was the winner and runner up was Josh Paerata with a nett 76. Third with a nett 77 were Jeff Bright and Laurie Hackett. Matchplay Championships 2020 The final of the club match play champs were played on Saturday 27th June. Cloudy conditions prevailed and there was a light breeze from the south east. The Bronze two finalists were Win Finlay and Carolyn Davidson. This final was over 18 holes. Win played very well but Carolyn could not find her golfing form that day so Win was well on top the winning margin being 7/6. The Bronze one finalists were Ev Gibbs and Barbara Hill. This final was over 36 holes. Ev won the first two holes and retained that margin after nine holes. Barbara closed the gap and the game was square after twelve holes but Ev won 4 of the last 5 holes to be 4 up at the lunch break. The match was close over the next 9 holes and Ev increased her lead to 5 up and the won the next 3 holes to claim the title the winning margin being 8/6. The silver finalists were Gareth Hughes and Kathy Faiers and this final was also over 36 holes. After 9 holes Kathy had a 1 up lead after steady golf by both players. Gareth's play improved over the last 5 holes and at the lunch break she had taken a 1 up lead. Play was even for 5 holes after lunch and then Gareth played par golf to finish the front nine and had increased her lead to 4 up after 27 holes. Gareth continued to play close to par golf over the next few holes but Kathy was on the bogey train and Gareth won the title the winning margin being 6/5. The men’s limit finalists were Laurie Hackett and Walter Cole and this final was over 18 holes. Laurie had a 3 up lead after 9 holes and increased the lead to 4up after 11 holes but then Walter fought back winning 3 holes to reduce the margin to only 1 down after 15 holes but Laurie came back to good form and won holes 16 and 17 so he won the title the winning margin being 3/2 The men’s junior finalists were Harvey Gibbs and Neil Edgcombe. Play was even over the first 9 holes with both players winning 2 holes each and the match was all square. Harvey played the best golf in the back 9 holes and at the lunch break he had a 2up lead. Harvey played steady golf after lunch and continued to pressure on Neil and after 27 holes had a commanding 6 up lead. Neil won the next 2 holes but Harvey won the 31st hole to be back 5 up and the title was birthday boys to celebrate the winning margin being 5/4 The men’s intermediate finalists were Mark Hawken and Stephen Hughes and Stephen had caused some upsets to make the final and was in good form. Mark played steady golf to be only 10 over par after 18 holes and had a 2up lead at the lunch break. After lunch both Mark and Stephen played even better golf but Mark had the lead all the way and his round of 79 proved a little too good for Stephen to match and Mark went on to win the title the winning margin being 4/3 The men’s senior finalists were Darcy Faiers and Arron Hughes. Both players had played only very minimal golf but this was the match of the day and the match was close most of the day. Darcy scored birdies on the 6th and 7th holes but then Aaron birdied the 8th hole so

Darcy was 2up after nine holes scoring a par 36 and Aaron scoring 37. The next 6 holes were par scores for both players then Aaron birdied the 16th hole to reduce the margin to 1 down Darcy birdied the 17th hole to regain his 2 up lead and both players birdied the 18th hole so Darcy remained 2up at the lunch break scoring a 2 under par round of 71 and Aaron scoring a 1 under par round of 72. After 27 holes Darcy had increased his lead to 3 up. Aaron scored birdies on the 34th and 35th hole to be only one down playing the last hole. Darcy put his second shot on the last hole under the trees but a good shot from there finished just short of the green. A good chip on left him an easy par. Aaron was on the green and putting for another birdie to keep the game alive but his putt shaved the hole and slid by. Darcy made his par putt and won the senior title 1 up. Congratulations to all winners and to the other players try harder next year. The day concluded with a pot luck tea and there were many delicious dishes of food to choose from. Thank you to all the good cooks.

Pātea Community Board Meeting Notes from the meeting on Wednesday 15 July 2020 4pm, provided by the Board Members. The fifth meeting for the year was held at the Hunter Shaw Building Pātea. Present were: Pātea Community Board members; Jacq, Jo, Maria, Rob Northcott (Pātea Ward Councillor), Janine Maruera, (Community Development Officer), Phil Nixon (Mayor), Sara Dymond (PA), Waid Crockett (CEO), Liam Dagg (Group Manager Environmental Services) and 18 members of the public. Meeting was opened with a karakia from Jo Peacock. Open Forum: Allan Caple from Pātea Community Patrol updated us on the situation on the streets. There is a reoccurring issue with a man on motorbike with no helmet, speeding around town, police are aware and following up on this. Dogs are also seen roaming at night. Newspaper reporter at this meeting to report on the issue of roaming dogs, and there were several members of the public to speak about this. Bill Rosewarne spoke first about fact that 7 of his 8 ewes had been killed by roaming dogs, and that he had stopped them bailing up the mail lady. Other people at the meeting recounted close encounters with dogs on the streets and stories of older people who are unable to walk in safety, so miss out on that exercise. After listening to the public, Liam Dagg responded that the Council took this kind of public safety issue seriously and they will sort out this major problem for Pātea. 10 Roosters have been taken to the pound from Victoria St, there is an ongoing problem with Roosters on this street. Laurie Mildenhall wanted an update on the Waka. Liam Dagg replied with the news that the Council had found a waterproofing product for inside the waka and the drains from the base of the waka were also being blasted out. Paul Broughton pointed out that there is a dangerous open drain in the carpark at the Patea Beach. Liam Dagg noted it down in his maintenance work book, and said a cover will be put on it as soon as possible. Dot Bowlin asked for some parking spaces to be put aside at Waiinu Beach for freedom campers. And also the problem of drains in streets in Waverley not being cleaned on a regular basis and flooding occurring. Waid gave us an up on Nukumaru Station Road project. All going to plan it will be completed this summer. Update since the meeting: $7m given to STDC for this project by the Government. Janine gave us an update on the replacement historical information signs that are going up along the River Walkway. She has been consulting with heritage officials and local iwi. Mention was made of the recent renovations of the Patea Board Riders Surf Club Building. The Club is now in a good spirit and are repainting and re-roofing the building and clearing the built-up sand from around it. Facilities Usage Report was read. No issues here. Phil reminded us about the Sporting Hall of Fame nominations that close at the end of July. Kakaramea School: together we achieve

Welcome to Term 3 at Kakaramea School! As a school community we would like to introduce our new Kauri Room teacher Laura Richardson. Laura is a beginning teacher who comes to us from Okato and was brought up on a dairy farm. She enjoys sports and spending time with her family and friends. We are lucky to have her infectious smile around the school, welcome to the team, Miss Richardson!

Our students got a wonderful surprise on returning to school thanks to Steven and Shawn England who headed a long-awaited sandpit extension project on behalf of the BOT. The sandpit extension definitely got the tick of approval and has been very popular with the kids!! On behalf of Kakaramea School we would like to thank Steven, Shawn and all their many helpers for their expertise, energy and time they contributed towards this project for our super wee school. We would also like to extend a special thank you to Brett and Gabriel Honeyfield and Dale and Kelly Picard for their kind donation of materials to ensure our sandpit could be completed to such a high standard. We are so lucky to have such wonderfully supportive community members. Thanks again! There’s nothing quite like digging a good hole or building a volcano out of sand.

We saw a problem and we tried to fix it. Buddy classes Koru and Rimu have been working together as the school pest control squad, making wasp traps in an attempt to keep our jam sandwiches pest-free. Together we made the traps out of recycled plastic bottles, sugar water, honey and vinegar. The vinegar keeps regular honey bees out, but the wasps aren’t too fussy so they climb into the sweet concoction and cannot get back out. Whenuakura School - ‘Growing Personal Excellence’ Halfway through the year, and our learners have returned from the holidays refreshed and happy to be back into their school routines. We had a very busy end of term including a wonderful turnout of parents at the working bee, so thank you so much. The grounds are looking great. It was great to catch up with our families at the Learning Conversations at the end of last term and share the progress each child has made and our plans moving forward around assessment and home learning. We have also recently collected learner voice about our classroom programmes and gained valuable feedback. We have started the term with Monday Momentum where we teach our school values and set the weekly CORE challenge for the week. This week Whaea Soni and I have met with Enviroschools facilitators and have some exciting plans to watch out for! Mrs Ferris and I have also attended professional learning on ‘The Science of Reading - Literacy Success for all’ by Liz Kane. We look forward to implementing some of our new learning. Our learners are being encouraged to constantly display our School CORE Values - Collaboration, Open and Adaptable, Respect and Excellence. Congratulations to all of these winners from the last two weeks of term:

Pippa, Toby, Aidan and Hannah Leah, Adeezia, Rhylan and Thomas

We had a fun celebration on the last day of term dressing up as a favourite book character.

Zoom Inspired Teaching We were very lucky to have the opportunity to have a zoom chat with the amazing author/illustrator Donovan Bixley. The students were so well engaged and he even inspired our very own illustrations!
