The Health Bus, Waka Hauora bringing health services to the people

Patea Community Patrol increases its presence in town

Last week the Robert Bartley Foundation officially launched the Health Bus, Waka Hauora which has become the Whanganui region’s very own health clinic on wheels. Since the recent lockdown, the Health Bus has played a key role in the Whanganui District Health Board’s push to take the Covid vaccine to the people. Driven by a team of volunteer bus drivers, the brightly coloured bus has been parked up at a number of community locations in support of the Government’s initiative to increase Covid vaccination numbers. The Robert Bartley Foundation has worked closely with the Whanganui District Health Board and a number of local businesses and individuals to transform a retired Council library bus into a mobile health clinic. The result is a fit-for-purpose medical grade clinic complete with consultation area, waiting room, nurse’s station and vaccine fridge. As well as Covid vaccinations, the Whanganui District Health Board intends to use the bus for bowel and cervical screening, B4 school checks, childhood immunisations and ear / nose and throat checks. The Robert Bartley Foundation Chair, and Robert’s son, John Bartley says “it instils a great sense of pride that Rob’s vision is now a reality, we’re grateful for the generosity, support and help we have had in getting the bus ready for action and seeing the bus out in the community really makes all the hard work worthwhile.” The Robert Bartley Foundation was established by Robert Bartley QSM and his family with the vision to deliver quality local health experiences and making healthcare more accessible. The Health Bus is just the first of many initiatives planned by the Foundation. Rob Bartley had his own health struggles and was acutely aware of the need for providing easier access to health services locally. Sadly, Robert lost his battle with cancer in March this year. The Foundation, with the involvement of the Bartley family, continues the work to help establish health initiatives that Rob had identified to help the Whanganui and wider community access healthcare services. The Health Bus, Waka Hauroa in its new eye-catching wrap is taking vaccinations to the Whanganui community

Have you noticed the new signage at 126 Egmont Street, Patea? It’s for the new office and contact numbers for the Patea Community Patrol, to make the Patrol more accessible to the community. The office will be open one afternoon per week, with a footpath sign denoting when that is, as times may be variable with volunteer availability. In discussions with the Patea Community Board, it is hoped that having an office in town will bring people through the doors to discuss concerns regarding community safety, and strategies to uphold the true spirit of community cooperation in Patea. The Patea Community Patrol will have information available about what the Patrol’s purpose and goals are, as well as recruitment packs. It is an opportunity to discuss with young members of the community how being a volunteer Patroller is recognised as being an asset for career pathways. Patrollers are usually over 18, but with parental support, it may be possible to join at 17. At present we are actively seeking new members whose commitment is to initial online and patrolling training, then one Patrol meeting every two months plus at least one session of active or administrative patrolling per month. It’s not a huge commitment, but it makes a huge difference. Communication is a two-way street, so please come off the street and into the office so we can work together on ideas to keep the essence of Patea alive as a safe and enjoyable place to live, learn and play. Patea Community Patrol, 126 Egmont Street, Patea. Phone 020 412 123 61 or 020 412 123 62.

A Christian Word In Exodus chapter 33 verse 13 it says, “If I have found favour in your eyes, teach me your ways so I may know you and continue to find favour with you”. This is Moses speaking to God Almighty, having realized his need to know God more and desiring to know God’s ways and not his own. A heart felt prayer from a man who truly wants to know God, to be led by Him and not too proud to admit it! The one part of your personality that hinders our relationship with God is pride. It is that part of our being we do not want to yield, to give up. Why? Would it make us less a man? The desire to call the shots and to have your own very important opinion heard is paramount to our image! Let that go and we’re a goner. Frightening! Once you have made Jesus your Lord and Savior this is the only option for you, not an option out of fear or under a law, but from a free will heart desire to trust and obey God and all His commands, which are life giving. Realizing that our prideful ways are now becoming a stumbling block and we need to understand that God’s ways are not our ways. His teaching us obedience will inevitably save our soul! To yield is to give way to a superpower – in this case, God. 1 Peter 5 v7-7 says: “Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that He may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you”. Simple! The amazing outcome of surrendering, which for a man is very alien, with God this yielding actually makes you a better man, a more complete man and by this I am not saying that you are instantly in an All Black squad or some such thing! No! It balances you out perfectly in the likeness/image of Christ. Not having a macho mind or thinking you’re better than others because you have a new car etc. Material things come into the pride category and not the humbling that God requires of us. It’s a choice you need to make if you are genuine, not acting like a Christian, but being one. Which personally will only ever happen once you rid yourself of pride and such like companions that wage war against God in your life. Obedience is an absolute necessity to everybody’s development to growing into a healthy member of society, how much more to God? Bit like wanting to do a parachute jump, you actually have to let go of the wing strut and trust the parachute to open and guide you safely down! You have to let go and trust God! Same logic, give it a go! Surrender to God and ask Him to teach you His ways; He will. Come Lord Jesus Ted Reeves, Patea

Local News Bereavements

Sympathy is extended to the family and friends of Robert Nigel Black and Marjorie Vera Honeyfield (nee Lupton).

Carlyle Women’s Institute President Mrs Rose Cowley welcomed 8 members from Carlyle and 5 from Waverley to a potluck lunch, and our August meeting. Business was discussed. We played unjumble the words, (what’s in the fruit bowl) also 3 games of bingo, unfortunately Waverley did not win any games. The raffle (2 draws) was drawn by Waverley and won by Carlyle. Followed by afternoon tea, a chat and laughter; Waverley was farewelled, dishes done. We had been visiting Whenuakura School, Wednesday afternoons and St Josephs, Monday afternoons teaching crafts, knitting, cross stitch, pom poms etc. Lockdown has prevented us from continuing with this, we hope to return to the schools when convenient for all. Come and see what we are all about, first Thursday of each month, 1.30pm at Patea Old Folks Hall. Officers are: President - C Hayman Secretary - R Wilson Treasurer - C How Club Captain - A MacDonald Deputy Club Captain - C Fergusson During the meeting it was discussed and agreed that it is a condition of the Club that all members and visitors to our Club and grounds, be vaccinated for Covid 19. The subs were set at $70 and are due now. All subs must be paid before entry into all tournaments and events. There will be no annual show this year due to Covid but we decided to go ahead and put together a raffle, a "No Show" raffle. Tickets are available now $2 a ticket and it will be drawn when full. Waverley Primary School It is great to be back in the swing of things after the school holidays. We are super busy at the moment in our final preparations for our school production titled “Let the Games Begin”. Tickets for the show are available from the school office. We have three shows on the 10th and 11th of November. Due to COVID Levels we can only have an audience of 100 people so please get in fast to secure your tickets. Children and Adult tickets are $5.00. If you are bringing a preschooler we ask that you make a gold coin donation as they will be included in our 100 person limit. The students are starting to practice and prepare for school athletics later this term. It is great to get out into the sunshine and develop these skills. We are hoping that we will be able to hold a School athletics event that parents and community members can attend but we will have to wait and see closer to the date. Thank you to those people who have put their hands up to be a part of the Waverley Primary and Districts School’s 150th Jubilee. The Jubilee will be held in Waverley from the 10th - 12th March 2023. While this may seem ages away there is a lot to do to organise this amazing event. If you are interested in being a part of the committee please make contact with the school. Finally this month I would like to again congratulate all of our Cross Country Runners for their efforts at the Waverley Primary School Cross-Country that was held last term. I was extremely proud of all of the students that participated on the day. Thank you also to those parents who attended our event. It was great to see so many people out and about. Kind Regards, Tim Marriott Principal During week two of Term Four our year 1-4’s went on an educational trip to Te Manawa Museum in Palmerston North. Our EOTC trip was to finish off our ‘Mysterious Matter’ Inquiry unit based around solids, liquids and gases from earlier on in the year. The students also had a wonderful time exploring and playing at the Esplanade Park. A huge thank you to our parent supporters who were able to come and make the trip possible.

Real Food - Real People - Kai Resilience in Pātea - Saturday, 13th November 2021

Tēnā koutou, tēnā tātou, To empower and inspire our communities in South Taranaki with the emphasis on ‘Real Food - Real People’, several community groups are getting together for an online wānanga and discussions around kai resilience in Pātea on 13th November. “Nāu te rourou, nāku te rourou, ka ora ai te iwi - with your food basket and my food basket the people will thrive. An exciting collective collaboration between Taranaki TimeBank, Sustainable Taranaki, Enviroschools and the South Taranaki District Council is bringing together our Pātea community to find solutions around kai resilience” says Pātea Ward Community Board Member and Lower South Taranaki Timebank Coordinator Joanne Peacock. “This online event aims to empower and inspire food resilience in our communities and is about getting the whole whānau involved” says Sustainable Taranaki’s South Taranaki Project Partnership Manager, Andrea Rowe. “Sustainable Taranaki is a community organisation that seeks to inspire and support people, businesses and communities to value the environment and act to prioritise sustainability and we see kai as a connector that brings us all together.” “With the South Taranaki District Council’s newly adopted Te Rautaki Toitū Te Taiao Environment and Sustainability Strategy - we are keen to connect further, as a community, and as individuals, to take action to address our environmental and climate change challenges” says STDC Environment and Sustainability Officer Brittany Rymer. “This event will be an opportunity for people from Pātea and further afield to connect and discuss how we can work collaboratively to ensure that South Taranaki’s food system supports the health of our people and our planet.” “Our event will see a range of local champions from our communities that will inspire and encourage, while a series of workshops will be on offer to deepen our collective understanding around what we need to do locally, to ensure that no one goes hungry and whānau have access to healthy and fresh kai. There will even be workshops for tamariki and adults” says Lauree Jones from Enviroschools Taranaki. We are also running a colouring in competition where there are some great garden prizes up for grabs. This is open to all ages. If you are after a copy, please collect from the Pātea or Waverley Library Plus, or look out for them at your local school. If you missed out, you could email: ttb.lowersouth@gmail.com for one. The competition closes on Wednesday 10th November. To register for this event, go to the Sustainable Taranaki website and/or enter in the following link: https://www.sustainabletaranaki.org.nz/realfoodrealpeople You will be sent out the Zoom link prior to the event once you have registered. Let’s celebrate at the right time of year Ok, so all the hype in our shops and advertising is for Halloween on 31 October, with pumpkin lanterns and witches hats and day of the dead costumes and trick or treating. But think about it – Halloween or All Hallows Eve is about entering the darkest season of the year and a time of remembrance for those who have passed. It is said the veil is thin between the worlds at that time, and pumpkin lanterns (originally in swedes) were lit to assist those spirits on their journey. That’s what it is really about, not fun and candy. So, is it pumpkin season here? Are we heading into the depths of winter? Does it actually make sense to buy into a seasonal ritual that is located on the other side of the world just because they are? The answer of course is no. We need to locate our celebrations in Southern Hemisphere time. To celebrate this time of year here in Aotearoa it is equivalent to Mayday, but somehow November day just doesn’t sound right so let’s remember BELTANE instead. Now is the time to rejoice in the first of the fire energy seasons by lighting “Belfires” or bonfires (carefully of course) on hilltops (or in back yards – maybe a BBQ) to signal to our neighbours that we have survived the winter and are out and active again. It is a time to give thanks for the warming of the days, and to celebrate the fertility of the land. Traditionally the Maypole was danced around, with colourful ribbons creating a beautiful, magical pole as the dancers wove them over and under and around in a rhythmic pattern of cohesion, weaving in the summer. Whole villages would congregate to witness the young people coming together to raise the energy of love. On the wheel of the year does Summer now begin The world is beribboned, a gay harlequin Our hearts we will open, delight we’ll empower That in all of our steps love shall flower Beltane is an active season, where the growth really accelerates. Watch what is happening in the gardens as they burst into leaf and flower. Call to the Greenman of fertility to enhance your crops. Break out that creative project you have been imagining all winter and help it manifest through active intent. Be brave, be bold, be colourful. Dance the season in. Victoria Greenwitch Brown

Kakaramea School - together we achieve

We are right on your doorstep We can do WOF inspections while you wait

We’ve hit the ground running into Term Four with our annual Hall of Creativity and Pet Day, which although pared back due to Covid restrictions, was still a great success. It was wonderful to see all the children with their well-groomed calves, lambs, horses, and small animals, including a duckling!

Our hourly rate is lower than dealer workshops because we have less overheads You know our guys We can service and repair almost anything We do callouts (no travel charge within 10km radius of Patea) We are locals & support locally We are MTA assured

Our school bus shelter is well underway thanks to Bayden Muller and his team at BM Building. It will be great to be able to wait in the shelter for pick-up on those wild rainy South Taranaki afternoons! Well done to Jaden, Zion, Ruby, Hollie and Irene for participating in the University of Canterbury exams in English, Science and Maths - a great result from all!

Our wonderful seniors organised a mini Olympics at the end of last term, and the whole school got into the fun! We had a range of activities including long jump, high jump, musical chairs, shot put, and soccer. Along with sporting prowess the children displayed amazing resilience and team work.

It’s always an adventure when we go exploring in our neighbouring forest. The tamariki love to hunt for huhu grubs, make huts and just be in nature. How grateful we are to have this taonga so close to our school!

Kia Ora Koutou, Happy last day of Term 3. We have packed in a lot of learning in the three and a half weeks we had after lockdown. Multiplication, fractions, gardening, reading, writing, the list is endless. We’ve made a conscious effort to minimise screen time in the classroom after online learning and are keeping the hauora of our students at the forefront of our school day. Our Cross Country afternoon was a success; It’s not easy for some children who don’t enjoy running and there had been some good debates taking place in the Senior room about making the event optional but still the determination that we can see in the children during the race is admirable. Children and parents loved the Ngamatapouri mud run yesterday. The rain had made the track muddier, which made the day even better. Pet Day and Grandparents Day are my two faves in the calendar year but unfortunately the weather hindered our afternoon plans for Pet Day this year which was such a shame. Our judges were blown away with the aqua jars and vege critters that the children created. Our hall is now open. We were fortunate to have Rob from the Toi Foundation join us for the opening and thank them for the generous grant also to Bruce Clifton and his team for the amazing building work and Summit electrical for their donation of a heat pump.. Polly Devane, Principal

Memorial Plaques for sale A chance to be a part of Waitotara School’s History book. We are taking orders for our beautiful macrocarpa plaques that will be put up inside our school hall. We will send home an order form early next term. This will be ongoing; orders will be made to our supplier at the end of every term each year. Our 150th Jubilee is coming up in a few years and we’d love a whole wall of community members, past and present students, staff and principals. Please contact the office for more information.

We unveiled our new Waitotara Graduate Profile to the students this week and we were very impressed with the children’s reaction. Whenuakura School - Growing Personal Excellence

We would like to extend a big thank you to our families for making Pet Day a special event for our students, and understanding the restrictions we were under. It was sad we couldn't have all of our usual activities, and spectators / supporters, however the students loved showing their animals, and sharing their indoor exhibits with their families. We have received lots of positive feedback about the indoor exhibits. All of the judges were very impressed with the time and effort that had been put into both the exhibits and the pets. We will keep our fingers crossed that we will be able to hold a bigger event next year. Congratulations to all of our winners and to all the students for working so hard preparing your animals for the day. We would like to thank our judges for the great job they did. This is never an easy task, and we appreciate some were called on at the last minute. Pātea Community Board

Notes from the meeting on Wednesday 6 October 2021 4pm, provided by the Board Members. The seventh meeting for the year was held at the Waverley Community Centre. Present were: Pātea Community Board members; Jacq, Dianne, Maria, Jo, Rob Northcott (Pātea Ward Councillor), Janine Maruera (Community Development Officer), Phil Nixon (Mayor), Vanessa Bowles (PA), Liam Dagg (Group Manager Environmental Services), Michael Clarkson (Community Patrol Officer), Diane Pentz (Te Ara Pae Trust), 3 members of the public. Open Forum: Diane Pentz from Te Ara Pae Trust, Hawera gave us an overview of what they provide. Te Ara Pae Trust is a not-forprofit organisation that provides counselling to individuals and whānau who are affected by family and sexual violence. The organisation also provides counselling and group workshops for anger management. Counselling is also provided to young people from 13 years onwards and includes counselling for the Rainbow Community. Te Ara Pae works in close association with other service providers and local iwi to ensure the best outcomes for the community. They can be contacted on 062786399. Michael Clarkson from Pātea Community Patrol gave us an informative report of the current situation in Patea with crime and related issues. Dog issues still a major problem. Multiple dogs attacked a young boy near St Joseph’s primary school, requiring surgery. Michael is opening a ‘Pātea Patrol drop-in Office’ in his Office at the old Pātea Court House, this will be for people that want to report or discuss issues that he will pass on to the police if required. Another problem is the pedestrian crossing near the 4 Square, people are not checking that vehicles have seen them before they step out onto the crossing. The ‘diamond’ that is painted a few metres before the crossing was missing on one side, when the road was last tarsealed it was not repainted on. Michael arranged for it to be painted back on. People need to be taught that this diamond is an indicator when it is safe to cross, a car beyond the ‘diamond’ should be able to stop in time if someone is about to cross the pedestrian, if the vehicle is past the ‘diamond’ it may not be possible for them to stop. Laurie Mildenhall pointed out that one of the outdoor tables at the Pātea Library had graffiti on it. Full minutes of this and all Council meetings can be found on the South Taranaki District Council Website, under the heading ‘Our Council’ then go to ‘Mayor & Elected members’ then ‘Community Board - Pātea’ or view them at Pātea or Waverley Library Plus. Your Community Board Members are: Jacq Dwyer (Chair) Dianne Lance (Deputy Chair), Jo Peacock, Maria Ferris, Robert Northcott (Pātea Councillor) The meeting times & venues for this year are: Wednesday 17 November, 4pm, Hunter Shaw Building, Pātea.
