Volunteers needed at Mt Hiwi Reserve, Waverley The Mt Hiwi Charitable Trust was formed in 2001 as a way to preserve and enhance a 411ha block of native bush inland of Waverley. There is a mixture of established forest and regenerating forest, which is home to a variety of native NZ species. These include brown kiwi, North Island robin, whitehead, ruru, and even native bats, to name just a few. Protecting the land and ecosystem will ensure that the populations of these species will increase, and in the future there is the potential for more species to be introduced into this area. Up until this point, the Taranaki Kiwi Trust (TKT) has had some involvement with Mt Hiwi. We have been monitoring two adult male kiwi (Nga Ariki and Ngati Pourua) which are a part of Operation Nest Egg (ONE). ONE involves taking eggs from males after 60 days of incubation, hatching them in a special incubation facility, and raising them until they are large enough to fight off predators by themselves. 95% of wild kiwi chicks are killed by stoats before they are even one year old, so ONE dramatically increases their chance of survival. Over the past two years we have taken 11 healthy eggs from these Mt Hiwi males.

TKT have also been involved in establishing and maintaining the current traplines. There are about 140 traps which include a mixture of DOC200s, Goodnature A24s, and Steve Allen cat traps. Only a small proportion of the property is trapped, so we would like to establish more traplines within the reserve, as well as along Braemore and Omahina Roads which border and lead into the reserve. Trapping these roads will be a part of a ‘halo’ around Mt Hiwi and the surrounding properties, and will act as a first defence for incoming predators. We would love the support of the local community to further establish this site and protect the surrounding area as well. We are currently looking for volunteers to help cut traplines, carry in and set up traps, and undertake monthly trap checks. Our priorities are Braemore and Omahina road, which can easily be accessed via car or 4WD. If anyone is interested or would like further information, you can get in touch with the Taranaki Kiwi trust via email (info@taranakikiwi.org.nz) or through our Facebook page.

DEADLINE: all copy to be handed in by 26 July for August 2021 issue.

A Christian Word Last month, after having endeavored to steer you towards the truth of our being here, God as Creator and finally judge, in the hope you would spend more thought as to your being here on earth for x amount of years and then to die and take nothing with you. Then come before God Almighty and be held accountable for every day and word and action and thought. Boy, are you going to need a good lawyer! I know of one such … Jesus Christ, He will get you off all of those charges. However, I mentioned as to why God does not intervene here and now, today – hold everyone accountable for their sins, passing judgement swiftly and just. But God does not. Why? Why does He not punish us now? Why has God chosen to punish us after we die? Look at it like this – let’s say, if God punishes the wicked with sickness for their evil ways now and gave perfect health to all who do good, what would you prefer? Sick or health? No brainer really, is it not? But by doing this do you realise that God would be taking your sovereignty away and making you choose just one option – health. You would have no option and God would be forcing you to like Him (which He would never do). He would be forcing us to be good, there would be no choice, there would be no faith, no trust, no freedom. Could you really love someone who has taken all but one choice away from you? God will not intervene with our choices and consequences today and right up to the day we die, then there are going to be consequences! To some people who believe in God through His Son Jesus Christ, having confessed their sins and been forgiven (God remembers your sins no more, complete forgiveness) they will receive a rich inheritance and life Eternal. To the others who choose to ignore God’s life-giving promise, there will only be serious consequences. Proof that God is just and fair. Because this world is going downhill fast does not mean that we must join in with it. We have a choice, good or bad, light or darkness, Jesus and eternity or consequences that will be accountable. Consider your choice very seriously. Come Lord Jesus Ted Reeves, Patea

Puanga Koniahi Toi Event

Puanga Koniahi was celebrated by the community on 5 June at the old swimming pool section in Stafford Street by star-gazing with Kere Taputoro. Later that morning families painted, coloured and adorned stars at the Old Folks Hall, and this was booked out. Puanga packs were also available for all families, with guidance from Kere on how to make their own non-electric lamps. Community members came to look then brought back their whanau to participate. We were well supported by the community and very grateful for their sponsorship of tea, coffee and "Bacon & Everything Pie" by one of our community board members! This Puanga Koniahi toi event was funded by the Creative Communities Scheme, for which we are very grateful.

Work Set to Start on Nukumaru Station Road Project An enthusiastic crowd turned out this morning to watch South Taranaki Mayor, Phil Nixon turn the first sod on the long awaited Nukumaru Station Road extension project. The ceremony was led by Ngāti Ruaiti Hapū with support from Ngā Rauru representatives. Mayor Nixon says the $10.14 million project represents a major investment in the southernmost part of the district which guarantees security of access for residents and business. “The new road is a vital access for the Waiinu Beach community, the ongoing financial viability of the Waitotara Silver Ferns Farm food processing operation and other businesses in the area and will ensure the community has a secure route in and out of the village,” he says. Physical work will start at the Waiinu Beach end of the 8 km road in the next two weeks with Taranaki Civil Construction being the main contractor. The project to build the new road was first mooted after the June 2015 floods closed the Limeworks Bridge, the only access road to the Waitotara meatworks and Waiinu Beach community. This was the fourth time in 26 years the bridge had to be closed for a significant period of time while repairs were made. The new road will eliminate the risk and cost of business interruption to the community and local industry, in the event of future flooding. $7 million of the $10.14 million project is being funded from the Governments ‘Shovel Ready’ projects fund with the remaining money coming from the South Taranaki District Council and Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Agency. Construction of the new road will take around 12-14 months.

Pātea Community Board Meeting - 2 June 2021 Notes from the meeting on Wednesday 2 June 2021 4pm, provided by the Board Members The fourth meeting for the year was held at the Kakaramea Hall. The meeting opened with a karakia from Jo. Present were: Pātea Community Board members; Jacq, Dianne, Maria, Jo, Rob Northcott (Pātea Ward Councillor), Janine Maruera (Community Development Officer), Vanessa Bowles (PA), Liam Dagg (Group Manager Environmental Services), and several locals. Open Forum: Constable Kayanna Holley presented information about Te Ara Tika Driver Licensing programme she is running in our district. Eleven Patea Area School students are partaking in this and will benefit hugely when they get their drivers licence. The programme is currently running short of funds, so they have asked the Community Board for help with this and submitted an application to the Patea discretionary fund. Manager of Taranaki Kiwi Trust; Celine Filbee, gave us a talk about the good work that is happening on the Mt Hiwi block inland from Waverley. This 411ha of native forest was purchased by a group of university friends in 2001, they formed the Mt Hiwi Charitable Trust and have been doing good work out there ever since, eradicating pests and protecting the land and wildlife on it. They need help from local volunteers to help with checking traplines on a monthly rotational basis. It will be a great way to get out in the bush, do some amazing work to help the environment and endangered species. There is a variety of wildlife out at Mt Hiwi – brown kiwi, north island robin, whitehead, fernbird, NZ falcon, ruru, native bats etc. If you can help please contact Celine on 027 454 0591 or message on the ‘Taranaki Kiwi Trust’ facebook page. Marianne Broughton from the Pātea Māori Club told us about their application to the Patea discretionary fund for new kitchenware for the Clubrooms. They are very short of a lot of things and people that hire the Hall are having to bring their own utensils. She also wanted us to know that the Pātea Māori Club rooms are available for all to hire – contact details are on the back of this newspaper. Mareta Marsters-Grubner talked about the event she has organised with Kere Taputoro called ‘Puanga Koniahi’ it will be held at the Pātea Old Folks Hall on Saturday 5 June. Art facilities will be available for people to paint their own star. Laurie Mildenhall asked about the Tilt windfarm fund and who will be on the Board to distribute this. There is an open day at the Wind farm on 18 June. And he also pointed out the case of the dumped asbestos at the Pātea Beach look out. The Council cleared it away, but it is disappointing that we have people in our district that do this. Putting camera’s up won’t help as they will just dump it elsewhere, if people who have something to dump and are unsure where to take it, ring the Council 0800 111323.

Marie Dwyer gave us an update about what is happening in Kakaramea at present. TAFT are bringing ‘The Beat Girls’ to the Hall on their Arts Festival Tour, on Friday 30 July, tickets $45 each, available through Marie. And the Kakaramea Hall will be turning 100 years in 2024, so the committee is currently doing some renovations to it for a celebration in 3 years’ time. Jacq gave an update on the Pātea RSA picnic tables and bench seats that the RSA committee are donating to the town to commemorate their centennial. The quote that came back from the company that supplies the outdoor equipment for the Council was too expensive, so Joan Macbeth is getting a quote from Hooper Engineering. There will be 2 tables with bench seats on each side and they will be behind the waka. End of open forum

Minutes from last meeting were read and discussed and confirmed. Matters arising: Footpaths are still in a mess after the fibre installation from Chorus. Liam is following this up. The site that Kere and Lutha had chosen for the Star compass site – the old pool section on Stafford St is not suitable, too many hills around it, so they will continue to look elsewhere. The Long Term Plan decisions will be ratified at the Council meeting on 28 June, so we will here the outcomes after that date. Maria updated us on ‘Fun Sticks’ down at Waverley. This was started in 2014 as a fun way to get kids to play hockey. They now have 4 teams and need some more uniforms. Which an application has been made to the discretionary fund. Janine updated us on the Directional sign project at the beach lookout. Blue Marble landscape design firm have done a stunning plan for the area. The Pātea Freezing Works memorial/information board project is ticking along. Noel McColl is happy for it to be by the fence near the old main entrance to the site. We will be having a community meeting at Waverley for the Kiwi racehorse statue in the next couple of weeks. Full minutes of this and all Council meetings can be found on the South Taranaki District Council Website, under the heading ‘Our Council’ then go to ‘Mayor & Elected members’ then ‘Community Board - Pātea’ or view them at Pātea or Waverley LibraryPlus. Your Community Board Members are: Jacq Dwyer (Chair) Dianne Lance (Deputy Chair), Jo Peacock, Maria Ferris, Robert Northcott (Pātea Councillor) The meeting times & venues for this year are: Wednesday 14 July, 4pm, Hunter Shaw Building, Pātea Wednesday 25 August, 4pm, Alton Coronation Hall Wednesday 6 October, 4pm, Waverley Community Centre Wednesday 17 November, 4pm, Hunter Shaw Building, Pātea

Meet Cindy from the Op Shop When you pop your head in the door of the Waverley Baptist Church’s Op Shop you are likely to be greeted with a cheery “Hello dear! How are you today?” You have just met ‘Cindy from the op shop’! Cindy is a member of the church and has been managing the shop for more than 6 years. Cindy is there, three hours a day for three days a week, every week - as a volunteer this is quite a commitment. It makes you wonder why she does it. Her response is classic Cindy…”I’m a ‘people-person’, I just like to be around people, helping them, making them feel special. And the shop is important for the community. It’s a safe place, non-judgemental, where people from the community can connect with others and pick up a bargain” It’s a perfect fit for the original vision of the shop. When opened nine years ago the idea was a place where people could buy what they needed cheaply as well as turning donated goods into cash to do good in the local community. A double-barrelled community project. Empty space at the back of the church was set up as a shop, initially opening one-day-a-month. Donations were generous and the demand was there so, eventually, like topsy, it grew to what you see today. One of the main benefits for the community is the food bank run out of the op shop. While much of the trade comes from the passing through highway traffic, locals have always given great support. Over the years there have been a number of people from the community who have volunteered and help is always welcome. Another person you are likely to see is Carolyn Anso from Patea who gives one day a week to sort donations and manage stock. People have always been very generous with donations to stock the op shop which has benefitted many people. But there is one thing the shop can do without. From time to time unfortunately people mistake it for the dump and drop off unsaleable items that they are clearly just trying to get rid of. It is a perennial problem for many op shops. While most genuine donations are made when the shop is open those who are offloading rubbish usually make their ‘contribution’ when the shop is not open, often under the cover of darkness! Fortunately it doesn’t happen too often. The other thing you may notice after Cindy’s cheerful greeting is the choice of music playing in the background. More often than not it is Country and Western… Cindy’s other passion. And something not known by many of the customers is that Cindy and her husband Cliff are very talented performers. They have even recorded a couple of CD’s. It may even be them that you are hearing! While the church’s food bank and op shop are two of the church’s main contributions to the community we are always looking out for other ways to support our Waverley folk. We would welcome any ideas for consideration about other ways to serve the community. We are here for you.

Kia Ora Koutou Everyone, I was lucky enough to attend the NZEI Rural Principals conference last week and have returned feeling invigorated and excited by the year ahead. Waitotara School is a great place for learning and I loved sharing our successes with other principals and telling them about the cool things we are doing at our kura. Mr Savage has been working extremely hard- painting our pool changing room sheds, van shed and our PE shed. We are incredibly grateful to this amazing man who has saved us a lot of time and money! He is an amazing role model for our students to see the joy in giving and contributing to our community. We are also very grateful to the Waverley Lions for helping us in the Duffy Books in homes programme who provide books of choice to families and children. Our hall renovations begin this month, we’re lucky to have Bruce Clifton and his team onsite and we will be following our Health & Safety policy to ensure everyone is kept safe during the renovations. I’ve handed out a lot of prizes this week from our Graduate Profile Homework. Your feedback is really important to improve our teaching and learning here at Waitotara School. Tackle Rugby Competition Last week Matiu & Malachai played in our West Country team at Springvale Park. They had a few wins and a few losses and were third in the competition. Well done boys.

Grant Hurley Retires

Grant Hurley has retired as Patea’s iconic Butcher after decades of serving the community. When Edith Cheetham gifted Grant a lamp showing his last Fire Brigade call out and shared the photo on FaceBook, almost 100 people took the time to comment – many sharing memories along with best wishes for Grant and Louise. A few years ago, Vice magazine featured Patea and visited Grant, writing with obvious delight about the bacon they bought, and the service they received. No surprise to locals! From our readers near and far – happy retirement, we’ll miss you.

Hi everyone, The weeks are flying past. Each week on a Monday we meet as a whole school for ‘Monday Momentum’. It is an opportunity to learn about our CORE values and set a focus for the week around positive expectations (this can be known as positive behaviour for learning). Recently we have been teaching expectations around ‘wet and muddy’ areas that are appearing around the school. We have also been working on our CORE values of respect for others and collaboration especially in the playground. It can be difficult for children to navigate the different stages of friendship so it is important we are coaching them through this and modelling the behaviours we would like to see. This is a continuous journey that changes from one day to the next and we appreciate the home school partnerships we have with all of our families that ensure we have great support to instill and achieve our CORE values. Open Ended Gross Motor Play We are collecting items to create an open ended gross motor play area. This will be situated in the outdoor classroom area by the wooden tee-pee and sandpit. Open ended refers to items that can be used in many ways and encourages children to use their imagination. Gross motor play refers to the movement of large muscles or whole body movement. Our goal is for children to be active, use imagination in play and also work on social interactions and conversations. Some items we are looking for include wooden planks, down pipe, log rings (flat for stepping stones), electrical reels of various sizes, and saw horses. We welcome any donations and plan to rotate what’s available to keep it interesting.

EPro8 Our EPro8 team represented Whenuakura School with pride at the semi finals in Stratford last week. The EPro8 challenge is an inter-school science and engineering competition. Every year over 10,000 students from 800 schools from throughout New Zealand take part. This was a wonderful experience for our learners, extending their knowledge, working as a team and competing against their peers and the clock. Many thanks to Conna for taking them up to Stratford. Teamwork and Sportsmanship Tuakana Hive enjoyed a visit from Ross Williams who shared his thoughts and tips when playing a team sport. Mr Williams used his coaching experience to explain the on field and off field qualities we could strive for in order to display quality sportsmanship. We plan to use these tips for our lunch time games, school sports exchanges as well as the team sports we are all involved in outside of school hours. Bhana Cup We had a great time participating at the Winter Tourney / Bhana Cup in Hawera recently. Combined as the South Cluster with our neighbouring schools we had students participating in all four codes of rugby, hockey, netball and soccer. A great day had by all! Enjoy the school holidays everyone.

Waverley Primary School Principal’s Message We have had amazing support here at Waverley Primary School. Friday 11th June was Support Staff Staff breakfast. It was a nice opportunity for us to say thank you to our amazing support staff for all of the work that they do for our very lucky children here at Waverley Primary School. On Friday the 18th June we celebrated our Grandparents Visit. This was an opportunity for our Grandparents to come in and see what the children were learning in each of their classes. I want to thank the people who turned up. We had an amazing turnout of people who got into the classrooms and had a great time with their grandchildren. We are in the process of planning Waverley Primary School’s 150th reunion. We will be celebrating 150 years in 2023. The planning stage for this event is huge and will take a lot of hands. If you are interested in being a part of the planning committee please feel free to contact the school office. We are having a planning committee meeting here at school on the 30th June at 7pm. Anyone interested please feel free to attend. Tim Marriott, Principal Support Staff Week On Friday the 11th of June we celebrated our wonderful support staff - Hollie Brasting, Sally Newland, Gabrielle McCullum, Irene Reece, Annette Campbell and Kerry Rees by cooking them a delicious breakfast. We are very lucky to have an amazing group of caring, hard working and supportive people at Waverley Primary School.

Golf Rimu, Kauri and Matai Hubs have enjoyed learning new golf skills with Mike from Golf Taranaki. Students thoroughly enjoyed learning how to putt and drive a ball. We now have many students interested in forming multiple golf teams for our school.

Grandparents Morning Students had a lovely morning spent with their grandparents/whanau at school. Students enjoyed showing them their learning in their classrooms and our school environment. This was followed by a delicious morning tea. Thank you to everyone who came into school for this special morning. It was great to see you all and share our learning with you.

Disability Education On Thursday the 17th of June, Tracy from Parafed Taranaki spent time with our senior classroom. Tracy talked to students about her career. Tracy also taught students a variety of sports activities that are inclusive for all abilities. It was really fun. I enjoyed playing sitting down volleyball. It was so hard. The hardest game of all was Goal Ball. Goal ball is where you are blindfolded and have either five or six people on a team and roll a bell ball along the floor to score a goal. I have a lot of respect for people with disabilities. I hope Parafed Taranaki comes back to our school again soon. By Luke Watty

Patea Golf Club 4 way interclub at Rarangi There was a bit of discussion about why we were leaving so early to catch the ferry but everyone was on time and we left the clubhouse at 3.15am and after some slow traffic areas were arrived at the ferry terminal at 7.10am.The sailing on the interislander was 30 minutes late and then the captain also turned the ferry around to head towards a kayaker in distress so our sailing ended up being over an hour late into Picton. We were greeted by sunny clear skies in the south island as we travelled down to Blenheim and our accomodation at the Grove Park Motor Lodge. After some grocery shopping we settled into our accomodation and then had our evening meal at the grove Tavern. The meals were very large and delicious and after a few beers and spirits and some gambling most players had a reasonably early night. On Friday sunny skies greeted us again as we headed to Fairhall and the start of our 3 day south island tour. The course was in very good condition and the greens were running fast and some good scores were returned. Marcell Carroll headed the men’s scoring with 39 points followed by Willie Harris 36 points Trevor Simpson 34 points and Robert Bourke 33 points. Verna Bourke 36 points headed the ladies scoring with 36 points followed by Win Finlay 35 points and Barb Hill and Kathy Faiers on 31 points. After some delicious platters and a few drinks we headed back to our accomodation to get ready for the teams get together at the Grove Tavern. It was good to catch up with our golfing buddies from the other three sister clubs have a meal and some beers before playing Rarangi the next two days. Our four players who travelled down by car joined us that evening. Saturday overcast skies greeted us and the wind was very changeable so this day was the practice round for the main day. A team’s competition was played and a number of Patea players were in the winning teams. Patea had the largest visiting contingent with three of friends joining us from Hawkestone and Trevor and Cheryl travelling down from New Plymouth helping to boost our numbers. The course was in good condition but no carry in the winter conditions and the greens were at a fast pace. Leading men’s scores on the Saturday were Kevin Cameron 34 points Joby Stella 33 points and Trevor Simpson Marcell Carroll and Harvey Gibbs all on 31 points. The ladies scores were much better with Lani Tipu and Verna Bourke on 37 points Barb Hill on 34 points and Ev Gibbs on 33 points. We had afternoon tea after golf the putt / pitch competition and then the daily prizegiving. There was a delicious evening meal and gambling haggle before heading back into town at about 830pm Sunday overcast skies greeted us again but a little drizzle was all we had. After morning tea were teed off on main trophy day. Once again our visiting players and our new members and our ladies played well. We had afternoon tea after golf and then the raffles were drawn and a number of Patea players won prizes. It was then time for the fines session for misdemeanors which happened over the weekend. There were plenty of fines but the most entertaining of the sheriffs was our own Barb Hill. There were plenty of laughs when she told here stories. The fines session raised over $600 for junior golfers from Rarangi. Leading men’s scores on the Sunday were Joe Mildenhall 38 points followed by Sonu Rio and Maihi Rio on 34 points and Joby Stella on 33 points. Leading ladies scores were Lani Tipu 37 points Kathy Faiers 36 points and Verna Bourke and Ev Gibbs 35 points. After the individual prizes were presented we were down to the major team trophies. The host club Rarangi with an average score of 33.32 points won the friendship trophy. The Taranaki trophy was won by Weedons with an average score of 32.85 points so who was going to win the dreaded Pissed On trophy and last placing. Patea with an average score of 32.68 were third winning the Chambers Pot and the Pissed On trophy went to Dannevirke with an average or 30.60. There were plenty of club house cheers when this trophy was presented. Music was provided after prizing giving and it was time to socialize and have fun. We departed the clubhouse just before midnight after a good time. Monday was the rest day and it was the only day it rained so that was very good timing. A pool tournament was organized at the Grove Tavern and Aroha Harris and Ray Finlay were the undefeated winners. Ray and his two punting mates also had a good day on the horses. Some others had small wins on the pokie machines Tuesday started a bit cloudy but the weather improved as the day went on and we headed off to Picton for day two of our three day haggle. The course was wet underfoot but the good conditions resulted in some good scores. Ray Finlay putted very well to head the men’s scoring with 41 points followed by Kevin Cameron 38points and then Joby Stella 37 points and Trevor Simpson 34 points. The ladies best score was Ev Gibbs 34 points followed by Lani Tipu 31 points and Win Finlay 28 points. The catering was very good and the bar prices were similar to Patea so we stayed a bit longer than planed and a few games of cards were played as we socialized. After 6pm we headed back to our accomodation. Wednesday was a cloudless day and at 8am we headed off to Kaikoura for our final day of golf. The scenery was great on the travel down. The snow topped hills and mountains and the seals in the bays around Kaikoura were a few sights to take in. The course was in good condition and the greens running fast. Delicious food was available after our round and we were well looked after. Mike Hargreaves an ex Patea high school teacher was there to meet us. The men’ scoring was headed by Trevor Simpson 35 points and then Joby Stella 33 points and Nick Williams 33 points. The ladies scoring was headed by Gareth Hughes 36 points followed by Lani Tipu 33 points and Barb Hill 31 points. The three day haggle for the men was won by Trevor Simpson on 103 points followed by Joby Stella on 100 points and Marcell Carroll on 99 points. The three day haggle for the ladies was won by Lani Tipu on 93 points followed by Gareth Hughes on 92 points and then Verna Bourke and Win Finlay on 89 points. We awoke on Thursday morning and found out our 10.45am sailing on the Interislander had been cancelled for maintenance work and we were told we would be on the 2.15pm sailing. So we walked the streets of Picton and had lunch as we waited for our sailing. There was no sight of our boat at 2.15pm and it was 5.30 pm before we finally sailed. What a rubbish service. After a few games of cards on the sailing where the Bourkes cleaned up we were finally on the motorway at 9pm and arrived in Patea just before 1am. Apart from the very poor ferry sailing organization everything else on the trip was well organized and

went to plan. Next year we host the 50th 4 way interclub at Patea and now all clubs are keen to carry on past the 50 years so start saving for Weedons in 2023. Set up an automatic payment and make saving up easy. Black & White Cup This was a nett competition played over 18 holes and windy conditions prevailed. Roger Edgecombe was 1st with a nett 73 followed by Robert Bourke nett 74 and Clayton Hori with a nett 76. Roger had a good day also winning the jackpot twos. Patea Cup A Patea Cup Qualifying round was played on the 12th June and playing conditions were good. Ray Finlay was first with a nett 72 followed by Gerald Rutten nett 74. The club nett competition was won by Jackson Harris who had a nett 64 and three players shared the jackpot twos. Jackson Harris Verna Bourke and Ray Finlay all scored twos on the 7th hole. Moody Mugs The main event for the winter months is under way and it is a two life system. Bad weather has interrupted the first 2 rounds but hopefully we will catch up on our games with some better weather. A good entry or 12 pairs entered the competition this year and already there have been many close games. Melbourne Cup Sweepstake The Melbourne Cup sweepstake is now open to enter for club members. There is only a few tickets left so be in to win. Coming Events 10th July Logan Trophy 18 holes best ball par competition 17th July North V Town v South. Special meeting after golf 24th July 2 person Ambrose/Foursomes/Bestball 7th August Adams trophy 18 holes stableford

"Working Large" at Left Bank Art Gallery, Greymouth Patea artist Cath Sheard was given the opportunity to join the “Work Large” project at the Left Bank Art Gallery in Greymouth during June. The gallery had received Creative Communities funding to provide artists with the chance to work on oversize pieces at no cost – with trestle tables, a pulley system for the walls, and some art supplies if needed. Cath spent a day at the gallery with friend and fellow artist Penny Kirk, a Greymouth resident. Penny worked in collage and oil sticks on a large sheet of plywood. She worked on a 5-metre-long series of watercolor sheets, taping 8 sheets together and treating them as one work until complete, then pulling off the tape to reveal clean edges. Her process starts with "taking a pencil or two for a walk over the paper" then using collage, and acrylic paint and compelting them throgh mark making with pen, pencil and artists’ crayons. Cath hadn’t worked on such large pieces since the last year of her Advanced Diploma of Art & Creativity at the Learning Connexion in 2008. She found the experience very freeing, and has produced a lot of work since that meld the colours of the Hokitika Gorge with fragments of the remembered shapes of the Patea Freezing Works and Cool Stores. Cath would like to thank Cassandra Struve, Penny Kirk, Left Bank Art Gallery and Creative Communities for the opportunity to spend the day 'working large'.
