Jesus used a lot of parables to help everyone understand the working of God (a parable is a short, simple tale based on familiar things). God’s plans for mankind needed to be revealed so that we can understand what life choices we make, along with the consequences. One such parable is in Mathew 13 verses 24-30, also verses 36-43. Verses 24-30 read: “The Kingdom of Heaven is like this. A man sowed his field with good seed, but while everyone was asleep his enemy came, sowed darnel (most manuscripts say tares) among the wheat and made off. When the corn sprouted and began to fill out, the darnel could be seen among it. The farmer’s men went to their master and said, Sir, was it not good seed that you sowed in your field? Then where has the darnel come from? This is the enemy’s doing he replied. Well then, they said, shall we go and gather the darnel? No, he answered, in gathering it you might pull up the wheat at the same time. Let them both grow together till harvest and at harvest time I will tell the reapers “gather the darnel first and tie it in bundles for burning, then collect the wheat into my barn”. When you read the next verses, 36-43, Jesus makes it very plain to all, saying, “He then dismissed the people and went into the house, where His disciples came to Him and said, explain to us the parable of the darnel (tares) in the field. The field is the world; the good seed stands for the children of the Kingdom, the darnel for the children of the evil one. The enemy who sowed the darnel is the devil. The harvest is the end of time. The reapers are Angels. As the darnel, then, is gathered and burnt, so at the end of time the Son of Man will send out His Angels, who will gather out of His Kingdom whatever makes men stumble, and all those whose deeds are evil, and these will be thrown into the blazing furnace, the place of wailing and grinding of teeth. And then the righteous will shine as brightly as the sun in the Kingdom of their Father. If you have ears, then hear”. This darnel is a weed that grows tall and looks exactly like wheat does, but when mature the only noticeable difference is the seed head. The Angels who do the harvesting, separating the wheat from the darnel, will only be able to see one thing, a mark on the forehead of all believers guaranteeing them Eternity! This is mentioned in Ephesians 1 v13-14. “And you too, when you heard the message of the truth, the good news of your salvation, and had believed it, became incorporate in Christ and received the seal of the promised Holy Spirit; and that Spirit is the pledge that we shall enter upon our heritage, when God has redeemed what is His own, to His praise and glory”. This time is coming soon, a very real certainty and it is so absolutely necessary to be ready, it is God’s will that no man should perish, but! God gives you the choice, you decide today whether you want Eternity in Heaven or not. This is not some heavy parable to beat you into submission, no, it is a truth about to happen and soon. Don’t ignore such a warning, do take responsibility for yourself and don’t fool yourself into thinking this is just some nonsense, because it is all going to make sense and hopefully for your good, real soon. Come Lord Jesus Ted Reeves, Patea

Local News Bereavements

Sympathy is extended to the family and friends of John Ernest Deadman.

Local artist paints Waverley mural Earlier this year I entered the Keep New Zealand Beautiful Resene Mural Awards. In June 2021 I recieved an email from them to say that I was of 10 artists chosen throughout NZ. I had been given permission by Sth Taranaki Council to paint the toilets at Aotea Park Public Toilets so was excited to have this opportunity. I have been working with children from Waverley and Waitotara school. The inspiration for the mural is Waitotara Valley. I was upset at the after effect of logging of pine forests in the area. Instead of simply replanting with pine I thought replanting with a percentage of natives would be more productive for the ennviroment. The native trees I decided on are Rimu, Kauri, Totara, White pine/ Kahikatea and Rewarewa. These trees have been used in the past for their timber and they also have berries and flowers which support native wildife. Overlooking the forests is a Kereru.

Anticipation building for the Summer Jam in Waverley

There’s nothing better than live music on a summer evening. The Wanganui Insurance Brokers Waverley Summer Jam will bring you just that and more! Previously known as the Waverley Summer Christmas Jam, the event has been postponed to Saturday 26th February 2022 from 4pm until 8pm at Waverley Dallison Park. This free community event is hosted by the award winning and talented Frankie Stevens, and we have special guests such as the Diamond Divas and Sophie Toyne treating us to their music. We are sure you will enjoy all of the entertainment on offer. “It was a pipe dream of mine to bring an event like this to Waverley. We (Maria Ferris and I) really wanted to bring people together and celebrate our community,” Vicki Koubaridis said. In 2019 they organised a successful, smaller scale Christmas event at Gully Park in Waverley. It was well attended and they knew that the event had the potential to be even bigger. Although the event is no longer during the festive season, the goal of bringing happiness and cheer to the community still applies. The event committee was formed and consists of Vicki, Maria, Megan Buchanan, Marianne Archibald, Kat Haerewa, and Frankie Stevens. The group have been busy securing sponsorship and are very thankful to the local businesses and community organisations that have contributed to the event. We encourage you to shop local, eat local, spend local, and enjoy local. It really does help to grow our community. Leading up to the event, we have exciting announcements about performers, sponsors, and prizes you can win. These will be made over our Facebook and Instagram pages which can be found by searching for ‘Waverley Summer Jam’. If there are any changes to the event due to these uncertain times, we will be sure to let you know. We look forward to seeing you and your family on Saturday 26th February from 4pm until 8pm at Waverley Dallison Park! If you have any questions, please contact us at wavsumjam@ gmail.com

Term 4 is flying by at Waitotara School. It’s week four already and teachers are working hard, packing in a lot of teaching and learning in both classes. The Seniors set off to Oakura for their camp in week one. Their cabins were beachfront and we were spoiled with great weather. The highlights were: Glow-in-the -dark mini golf, Brooklands Zoo, out on the ocean with Chaddy's charters and a few keen walkers climbed Paritutu Rock with W’aea Paula. We consider ourselves very lucky to be able to attend camp this year. The restrictions of Covid 19 remain at the forefront of our planning for the rest of the year. As you will be aware there is a mandatory health order that came into effect on Monday 25th October which requires all teachers, staff, contractors and volunteers who have face to face contact with our students to be vaccinated. Please understand that we will comply with this order which may result in you being asked to provide your vaccination status to be able to attend trips, camps etc. Any information shared is confidential. This directly affects our Junior Camp as volunteers and staff must have had their first vaccine by the 15th November if they want to attend. Year 7 and 8 students have been attending weekly service to our community sessions that have involved cleaning the Waitotara Church and working at Ashley Park. Thanks to W’aea Paula for arranging these visits and for the adults who have volunteered their time to supervise and mentor the students. Our Juniors are heading to the Wellington Zoo for their camp. What a fun-filled lineup of activities they have planned! Look out for our new all-weather turf which is due to be installed in January 2022. We are really excited about the opportunities this will give our children also our shade for our deck will be installed so we can work outside in the rain, hail or shine! Enjoy your week Polly Devane, Principal

Patea Golf Club

It has been a busy and successful month for the Patea Golf Club. Nineteen club members travelled to the Waverley Xmas Hamper on the 6th November. Very windy conditions prevailed but some of the Patea members played well and came home with prizes. Kath Honeyfield had the best result and was 2nd in the ladies Stableford and won her Xmas ham. The Patea open Xmas hamper was played on Saturday 13th November and a good field of 114 players participated. The course was in good condition and the early players had the best of the conditions with the predicted rain arriving in the afternoon and making conditions difficult for the late players. An interclub competition was played with Hawkestone and Fitzroy the same day. Results were Hawkestone men average 32.7 and Patea men average 31.7. The Hawkestone ladies average was 38.0 and the Patea ladies 35.5. The Fitzroy average was 29.80 and the Patea average was 31.25 so the trophy will return to Patea. The Waverley Patea hampers Stableford competition was won by Shane Rore with scores of 37 and 43 for 80 points, 2nd was Jamie Close-Adams with scores of 36 and 38 for 74 points and third was Robert Bourke 34 and 38 points for 72 points. Champion of Champions The small Patea golf club has performed very well this year at these events. The ladies team of Gareth Hughes, Kathy Faiers, Verna Bourke and Barbara Hill finished third in the Rosebowl which was a good achievement from our small number of playing ladies. This event was played at Te Ngutu. The Patea Men’s team of Darcy Faiers, Tama Rio, and Dillon Pullen are the Taranaki Men’s Champions for 2021. This event was played at the Hawera course. Pātea Beach Lookout Directional Sign On the Friday 26th November the new Pātea Beach Lookout Directional Sign was offically blessed by Hemi Ngarewa and Ngapari Nui. The Pātea Community Board started the process of getting this sign designed when Ruth Mackay was the Chairman. Like a good cheese, this project has taken a while to complete, almost 5 years, but the end result is perfect. The 12 signs are in ‘Pātea Rugby Club blue’ and look perfect with the ocean in the background. It was designed and constructed by Andrea Leadbetter and her team at TGM design in New Plymouth. Our Community Development Officer Janine Maruera really deserves big praise for seeing the project to completion and getting it done so well. Noel McColl is also donating a large rock to go on the plinth beside the sign, where a seat use to be, it will be a great spot to sit for a selfie. The 31 Tilt Wind-Farm turbines can be seen clearly on the horizon to the south. With the long summer days not far away, take a drive to the Pātea Beach Lookout to get a photo beside the new directional sign to send to your friends. Below: Jacq and Janine by the new directional sign. Right Hemi Ngarewa, Jacq and Ngapari Nui at the blessing ceremony of the sign.

There are 12 places marked on the sign post. The place names are in english on one side and te reo māori on the other, with the distance in kilometers. The 12 places are: Cape Reinga – Te Rerenga-wairua, 615km Hamilton – Kirikiriroa, 231km Gisborne – Tūranganui-a-kiwa, 327km Cape Kidnappers – Te Kauae-a-Māui, 223km New Plymouth – Ngāmotu, 86km South Pole – Te Pito Whakarunga o te Ao, 5598km Wellington – Te Whanganui-a-tara, 170km Australia – Te Pāpaka-a-Māui, 2171km Christchurch – Ōtautahi, 445km Dunedin – Ōtepoti, 752km Stewart Island – Rakiura, 960km Chatham Islands – Wharekauri, 874km Jacq Dwyer, Chairperson of the Pātea Community Board

Whenuakura School - ‘Growing Personal Excellence’

Hi everyone, End of year assessment has concluded and we are busy preparing for our Year 4-6 school camp (EOTC), school production and prizegiving. We are having to be open and adaptable when it comes to our planning of these events as we work with the public health guidelines provided by the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education with regards to the evolving situation of the COVID pandemic. Education outside the classroom (EOTC) is extremely valuable when it comes to developing interpersonal skills and relationships. Specifically, EOTC encourages students to connect with a wider circle of peers and get to know their teachers better. It’s important to note, these enhanced relationships positively impact learning back at school. Students get more comfortable asking questions, asking for help in class and working together in groups. Students get the opportunity to try new things and step out of their comfort zone. This year we are heading off to Camp Makahika near Levin and look forward to reporting back with some stories of fun and adventure. During the last week of November our NE-Y3 students got to strengthen relationships with each other and their teachers by having a ‘Big Day In’ of fun activities. They enjoyed a bouncy castle, water fun and games such as co-operative hoop relays, duck-duck-splash and a movie afternoon. Once again our supportive community worked together to ensure we had all that we needed. To celebrate the success of our te reo Màori and tikanga Màori journey so far, Tuakana Hive students prepared a hangi to share. Students prepared the kai and cooked it in a kai cooker with the help of Whaea Soni and Lani. Needless to say the kai was tino pai (very good)! One word to describe the day we had together - Miharo (awesome)! We would like to take this opportunity to thank our community for their support during 2021. We hope you all get to enjoy a restful break. Merry Christmas!

Pātea Community Board Meeting Notes from the meeting on Wednesday 17 November 2021 at 4pm, provided by the Board Members. The eighth and final meeting for the year was held via video conferencing due to Covid increasing around the country. Present were: Pātea Community Board members; Jacq, Dianne, Maria, Jo, Rob Northcott (Pātea Ward Councillor), Janine Maruera (Community Development Officer), Phil Nixon (Mayor), Vanessa Bowles (PA), Liam Dagg (Group Manager Environmental Services), Vicki Koubaridis, Frankie Stevens. Open Forum: Michael Clarkson from Pātea Community Patrol emailed a report to be read out: ‘Patea Community Patrol has opened an office at 126 Egmont Street, Patea, with the intention of being available on Thursday afternoons for people to drop in and discuss concerns and strategies for community safety. The recent article in the Patea and Waverley Press has resulted in one enquiry at the office, with the recruitment process underway. We are hoping more people will come forward and join us. Patrolling is continuing in both the urban and rural areas of the Patea Policing District, from Whenuakura to Manutahi. Patrols can be during the day, evening, or late at night. The purpose is to be out there regularly, but not necessarily predictably. Each patrol is different, and it is often a good time to liaise with members of the rural community and know that our presence is noted and appreciated’. Vicki Koubaridis and Frankie Steven spoke about their application to the Patea Discretionary Fund for $1773.04 towards the Waverley Summer Christmas Jam on 11 December. Since their application was submitted, they have decided to postpone the event till 26 Feb 2022 due to the current Covid situation. The board decided to support this request and reserve the funds for them until then. The other 2 applications were for $885 for the installation of the Patea Beach Lookout Directional sign, and $402.50 for a sign for the Hunter Shaw Building, both were approved. End of Open Forum. The Library Report from Cath Sheard reported on the success of the Lysaght Watt/Ronald Hugh Morrison Literary Awards held via zoom. And the Libraries have adapted well during these Covid times, doing things to accommodate library visitors, like putting a shelf of popular books at the front of the library, making the time spent in the library less. And ‘out of the bag’ activities for children. The Environmental Services report from Liam Dagg gave an outline of current building consents lodged with the Council, dangerous building notices, and Dog issues in our towns. Also listed the 4 recipients of the Natural Environment Fund – Holmleigh Trust, Taranaki Kiwi Trust, Native Forest Restoration Trust and Mt Hiwi Charitable Trust. In the Facilities report the question of ‘will the community swimming pools open?’ was still pending. But since this meeting it has been confirmed that the Pools will not be opening this summer – within government guidelines due to Covid. Full minutes of this and all Council meetings can be found on the South Taranaki District Council Website, under the heading ‘Our Council’ then go to ‘Mayor & Elected members’ then ‘Community Board - Pātea’. Or view them at Pātea or Waverley Library Plus Your Community Board Members are: Jacq Dwyer (Chair) Dianne Lance (Deputy Chair), Jo Peacock, Maria Ferris, Robert Northcott (Pātea Councillor) The meeting times & venues for next year are still to be confirmed.

Taranaki Kiwi Trust Update If you saw the July issue of the Press you would’ve read all about the Mt Hiwi and Taranaki Kiwi Trust partnership, and our aim to create a safe haven for kiwi (and other native species) at Mt Hiwi Reserve inland of Waverley. That initial story created some interest from volunteers keen to get involved in checking traps. We have since installed a new trapline, and these wonderful volunteers will be checking these traps regularly. The roads into Mt Hiwi serve as a highway for predators to access the reserve, so by keeping the surrounding areas trapped we can create a bit of extra protection. We are also monitoring two male kiwi at Mt Hiwi for Operation Nest Egg. One of these males has started incubating his first nest for the season, and in the middle of December we will be going in to take his eggs. The eggs will head down to Pūkaha kiwi hatchery, where they will be looked after until they hatch and put on weight. After this they will be released into the predator free Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari in the Waikato so they will be somewhat well travelled! This work helps protect vulnerable kiwi chicks from predation from stoats, ferrets, and feral cats. Our next step is to start trapping along another road in the area. We have been fortunate enough to receive a grant from the South Taranaki District Council Natural Environments Fund and will be using this to purchase new trap mechanisms that our skilled trap builders will put together. This money will go a long way towards developing the area for the return of kiwi bred in predator free Kōhanga in years to come. Before we put this additional trapline out, we would love to have some more volunteers to check traps. This only needs to happen once a month, and you would be included on a roster with others so please get in touch if this is something you would be interested in. You can contact Jess at info@taranakikiwi.org.nz or through the Taranaki Kiwi Trust Facebook page. If you see a trust vehicle in the area feel free to wave them over for a chat. Pictured is Jess Fancy tracking kiwi at Mt Hiwi, followed by a successful catch of Ngā Ariki.

Waverley Primary School Dear Parents/Caregivers, Earlier this month we had our school production title ‘Let the Games Begin’. So much work goes into a show of this calibre and I want to thank all of the students, staff and parents who worked tirelessly to ensure that we had an epic show. I want to extend a special thanks to a few people. Hannah Lupton and Renee Munro for all of their hard work with the cast and crew. Dianne Sanson for her hard work with the set and decorating and Kerry Rees for constructing absolutely everything that was requested of him. Thanks to the wonderful team of ladies for their work with Hair and Makeup, and also to James Henare for assisting with the sound equipment. Finally thanks to all of the parents, and community members for supporting the three shows of our production. We had a magnificent time creating the show and are very pleased to hear all of the positive comments from the community after viewing our performances. This term the Year 7 & 8 Students attended camp at Tui Ridge in Rotorua. It was a great camping experience and the students had a fabulous time. Thanks to Renee Munro for all of the work that went into organising such a great experience for our children. Wow what an amazing facility Tui Ridge is! I am looking forward to getting back there some time in the near future. We are pleased to announce that our staff are 100% vaccinated against COVID19 and it is business as usual here at the school. Like all schools at the moment we are looking at the possibility of holding the last remaining events for the school year. Unfortunately our school athletics will have to be spectator free at this stage and we are looking into the possibility of streaming the Prize Giving at the end of the school year. We will let all of our community know what we decide in the next newsletter. The 2021 school year for Waverley Primary school concludes on Tuesday 14th December. We are starting back in 2022 on the 1st February. Tim Marriott, Principal Mr Marriott, Kerry and Sally have been working together this term to plant our school’s newly donated fruit trees.

School Production The fabulous students here at Waverley Primary recently performed three wonderful shows of our production called ‘Let the Games Begin’. Audiences were wowed by fabulous acting, singing and dancing from our tamariki.

Pet Day We recently held our annual Pet Day and what a spectacular day it was! It was filled with a variety of cute and interesting pets, well trained and groomed lambs and calves, a yummy BBQ, creative indoor exhibits and a fun afternoon of games and challenges. Thank you to all our judges who helped out on the day!

Manchester Street Playground

The Manchester Street Playground in Pātea now has a beautifully built new picnic table. Tina Fisher and other residents of the area approached the Pātea Community Board last year asking for assistance with more equipment for the playground. We agreed that a picnic table and benches were needed for this sweet little playground and we asked Colin Schrader from Pātea Lions Club if he could build it. When Colin constructs something, it is done to withstand a cyclone, so we were really happy that he could do it. With the help of Alan Johnston, Colin installed the picnic table in early November. The concrete was poured by Steve Watson from Manutahi Concrete Products a few days later. We are really grateful to Colin for doing such a fantastic job, and we know the kids and parents that use the playground will appreciate having somewhere to sit and spend time together. Our crew of Year 6 students had a wonderful time on their Leadership Camp in Wellington. They thrived in the big city, pushing themselves to try new things and get out of their comfort zone. From rock-climbing to go-kart racing to ice-skating to ten-pin bowling, the days were busy and the children were amazing. Thanks to all the helpers!
