A Christian Word What is the good news of the gospel? Is it a way of life (an ethic)? Is it a code of behavior? No! That wouldn’t be very good news. If you were told to go out and never to do a wrong again, would that be good news? Not likely! It is bad news. Because you know perfectly well you will do it. Is Christianity an ecclesiastical institution? It is an organisation – a kind of religious club? Is it the church; what good news is there in telling you about a church? No religious church can put you in touch with the good news – they will tell you how to live your life according to their ideals, but it’s not good news! Every way of life that is taught amongst men, religious institutions, religions themselves are only “do it yourself ” jobs, telling you what you have to do! But the good news does not! It is not what you have got to do, it is what Christ can do for you - that is the good news. I have heard that He (Jesus) died on the cross for you. I have heard He (Jesus) is alive and well today! That is good news! It is not something you have got to do. It is something He has done for you. This is good news! The good news of the gospel only covers 3 days and 3 nights. Everything Jesus has done – healings, raising the dead, open blind eyes and set people free from their bondages, all this has no value whatsoever if Jesus has not risen from the grave. That is the good news, that Jesus died on a cross for your sins, was buried and rose again 3 days later. There were over 500 witnesses to this powerful work of God, recorded in history, absolutely true! This is the very core of Christianity, something every believer has to realise, not a religious work where you have got to believe or else. No! Why is this good news? Can He deliver us from our fears, yes. Can He deliver us from sickness, doubts, our complexes? Yes. Yes, He can do all this and more. Christ died primarily to get rid of our sins. Not our vices, the things we do primarily against ourselves, not our crimes, which we do against others, but our sins which we do against God – and that is very serious! The good news … Jesus died on a cross for you, your sins. He was buried, but the best news … He rose again, He is alive! Hallelujah! Therefore, the good news is specifically for you. Now that is good news! Come Lord Jesus Ted Reeves, Patea

Wishing you a Happy New Year From Patea Tyres

Two books of local Soldier's stories launched It’s been a busy year of research and writing for Laraine Sole and Jacq Dwyer, who have both had books published about the stories of our local soldiers. Jacq’s came out in March 2021, in time for the proposed RDA centennial celebrations, which were cancelled due to a covid outbreak at that time. So, it was decided to have a dual book launch on Saturday 27 November, with Laraine’s amazing book about the 394 soldiers that went to WWI from the Waverley area. The Patea RSA book contains names, details and stories of Soldiers from Patea, Kakaramea, Manutahi, Hurleyville, Alton and Whenuakura; it’s for sale at $25. Laraine’s book contains names, details and stories of Soldiers from the Waverley/Waitotara/Ngamatapouri area. For orders phone Laraine 06 346 5949 or Jacq 027 241 5595.

Our production ‘Beneath the Stars’ told a story of a small group of students that were on the hunt for something special only to discover that something special comes from within each individual rather than material possessions. The shows were a great success and pushed some out of their comfort zone, but most of all provided an opportunity for our students to shine while having some fun with dance and drama. It showed students what they are capable of when they break through the initial fear barrier and give things a go. A special thank you to Bianca Mitchell for her work in writing the play, and having such a vivid vision with high expectations of our budding actors and actresses. Huge thanks to Whaea Soni and Pete for all their work behind the scenes creating costumes, props and helping with extra rehearsals. Well done to our students for helping Whaea Soni create some of the costumes using skills taught to us by the lovely ladies of the Country Women's Institute earlier in the year during CONNECT Crews. They should all be very proud of their work both on and off the stage! Engaged Learners - Education Outside the Classroom Senior Camp With dirt between our toes and wind in our hair, we climbed, we walked, we flew…… Our hearts were filled with Adventure. Our year 4-6 learners spent three nights at Camp Makahika near Levin. What an awesome group they were - we were so proud of them all displaying our Whenuakura CORE Values, and understanding how to put these into practice outside of the school environment. All of our learners rose to the challenges they were set, pushed themselves way beyond their comfort zones and experienced many new life skills plus lots of fun and camaraderie. Thanks also to our wonderful team of parents who came along - their skills and assistance were invaluable Liz, Paul, Marichen, Scott, Al and Matt.

Hunter Shaw Building sign

The Patea Community Board have funded a new sign for the Hunter Shaw building in Patea. The sign was designed by Mackenzie Gardener of Zodiac signs in Hawera and features a stylised image of the Hunter Shaw Building. This beautiful 91 year old building was earthquake strengthened and refurbished by the South Taranaki District Council in 2019, and is well used by the local community for functions, meetings and events. It was built in 1930 with funds from a generous bequeathed by Mr Hunter Shaw of Whenuakura, who had died in 1927 and left £8,500 to be used for various charitable purposes. Shaw had bought and developed a 500 acre block of land known as "Crescent Falls". Born in Ireland, he was one of nine children - all unmarried. The Hunter Shaw Building was originally built as the Patea Library and used for this purpose until 2002. The Library then moved into the old Borough Council building. Gummer and Ford were the architects and the design of this Georgian building is very similar another of their projects - the Remuera Library in Auckland. The construction of the library was supervised by well-known Hawera architect, John Duffill. Abe Abraham from the Council installing the new sign.

Patea River Walk signs

Isle of Tiree Mystery

The seven historical information signs on the 1km long Patea River Walk have been renewed 15 or so years after they were first installed. The new signs were designed and manufactured by TGM Design in New Plymouth, with input from local iwi, and co-ordinated by Janine Maruera and Ella Borrows. The originals signs were designed by Michaela Stoneman, researched by Terry Tamakehu and constructed by Mike Cole. But after many years in the elements, they had fallen into disrepair. The content on the seven signs starting from the boat ramp are titled: Haere Hau Pa, Dawsons Redoubt, Wai o Turi, the River Mouth, the Meat Industry, Patea Port and Woolstore Wharf. Each sign has information about the view and photos of how if looked in the past. The new timber posts and framework for the signs were constructed by Colin Schrader, with his usual high-quality workmanship. They were installed with help from Alan Johnston, on a hot Saturday morning, and blessed a few days later by Hemi Ngarewa and Ngapari Nui. The Patea River Walk is wonderful walk for families to do over the summer and learn a bit more about our local history as you go.

Could your family heritage story, or photographs, help to solve a mystery associated with a little item held by the Isle of Tiree Museum, Hebride’s, Scotland? Therein is a copy of a New Zealand 1911 issued Local Trade Master’s Certificate, to one Alexander MacKINNON. Unfortunately there is no associated provenance. New Zealand research reveals that Alexander was serving as a Mate [1915] on the purpose built, Patea / Wellington tradeship ss Hawera, and from 1921 to 1926 was listed as it’s Captain, on most trips. He is on the Central Wellington Electoral Roll 1911 – 1919 as Mariner, ss Hawera. Unfortunately we have yet to find social news press that ties him to the numerous McKINNON families, in New Zealand at that time. The research is my hobby, and I provide a free look up service re items held in the Auckland Archives of Archives NZ answering requests from around the world. Paying it forward for all the help I have had these past 50 years. Yours sincerely, Alan Sharp

We know it has been difficult since covid arrived but thanks to all the sponsors who have continued to support this open tournament. All players caddies and supporters must present a vaccine registration pass at registration. If you want a particular tee time put your entry in early to get your required time. There will be more than $4000 in prizes including a $150 lucky draw at prize giving. Best gross prize will be $500. Entries to Ray Finlay 027 270 7542 or Kath Honeyfield 021 151 8524. Hole in One Club Captain Ray Finlay had a day to remember at the Manaia Open Xmas on the 12th December. Ray scored his 4th hole in one on the 160 meter 15th hole using his 5 wood to hole out and score 5 stableford points on the hole. Ray scored 44 points to win his division and a second ham for the accuracy prize. Ray’s previous hole in ones were scored at Dannevirke Ngamotu and Kaikoura. Well done Ray. Business House golf Business House golf started in December with 16 teams entered. We played two nights with all teams participating but the third night we could not play due to course flooding. Hopefully some work is done to prevent this issue before the Roger Rei tournament. Closed Xmas hamper A good field entered and 23 tournament prizes were presented plus accuracy prizes and most honest prizes. After prize giving members enjoyed a delicious afternoon tea and then a skinners competition was played over 5 holes. There was no outright winner over the 5 holes so it was decided to have a putt off and Richie holed a putt from the back of the green to claim victory. A long drive competition was held and Shane Rore and Jamie Close-Adams were the winners. Members then enjoyed a barbeque tea with some delicious salads and desserts. After the barbeque tea the annual prize giving took place. Shoot Out day The season finale was the second shootout. Due to course flooding the inside 9 holes was played. Very windy conditions prevailed. The first person eliminated was President Verna Bourke after some issues in the rough and a 3 putt. After a mix up on the 9th hole with players playing the wrong ball a putt off was required and Jeff Bright was eliminated. Five players were in the chip off on the 10th hole and a poor chip by Phil Cassidy resulted in his elimination. On the 11th hole Roger Edgcombe was the only net 5 so he was eliminated. On the 12th hole Nick Williams has some issues getting out of the rough so he was eliminated. On the 13th Hole a putt off was required. Kevin Cameron left his putt only 1 foot from the hole but was eliminated when Cyril Faiers putt lipped the hole and finished only 3 inches from the hole. On the 5th Hole Gerald Rutten was in the box seat but a poor pitch over the green and a 3 putt saw him eliminated. On the 6th hole Robert Bourke had a few shots that were difficult to get out of the long rough and he was eliminated. The final two players were Neil Edgcombe and Cyril Faiers playing hole number 7. Neil finished a few meters short of the green and Cyril put his tee shot only 4 meters from the hole. Neil safely chipped on and Cyril’s putt for birdie lipped out so with both players having a net three a chip was required. Neil put his shot 2 meters past the pin but Cyril thinned his chip to finish 3 meters away so Neil claimed the victory. Patea Cup The Patea Cup finale was played over 18 holes and the five finalists were Phil Cassidy, Cyril Faiers, Gerald Rutten, Nick Williams and Robert Bourke. Play was close after 9 holes but Robert was to steady and won with a net 69. Second was Nick with a net 72. Third was Gerald with a net 72.5 followed by Cyril net 74 and Phil with a net 77 Upcoming Events 8th January Summer Cup Net & Twos 9th January Garnett family Trophy Foursomes

Patea Golf Club - President’s Report Patea Golf Club’s 117th Annual General Meeting

Welcome. This is my 4th report as President. Our golf course is on Patea Harbour Board and Patea Domain Land. The land is grazed with the help of Bevan Dobson’s sheep. The Club owns the club house and the land it stands on. This year we built a shelter on the course for barbeques when we have tournaments. The Committee approved a walkway along the seaside of the course with the proviso that health and safety issues are addressed. Kate Murdoch approached The Club about joining the Patea Sports Hub. Members have agreed to this. The Roger Rei tournament had 164 entries, the winner was E Jones. Gross 71. The course was re-rated this year. We are the windiest course in Taranaki. The Inside nine, outside nine and split nine holes we play are now rated for handicapped purposes. This year the Patea Golf Club got funding for a new irrigation system. The Club got signs made to please not litter the course with drink bottles. Please respect our environment. We are still dealing with the global pandemic. Despite the setback, membership has increased. We have played all our tournaments and trophies but 2, the Carey Shield and Carlye Cup. As President I’d like to acknowledge the effort and commitment of those members who work very hard to make a difference for you and your Patea Golf Club. Also thank the Committee members and Club members for undertaking many of the behind the scenes jobs that nobody sees and being prepared to always do their best for the Patea Golf Club. Thank you for all your efforts, they are much appreciated. They know events can happen unexpectedly during the sales process, so believe in being available during all 24 hours of a day and seven days a week to address them. Being firm but fair in all actions, they will put more resources into your marketing campaign, backed with industry leading suppliers, to provide a level of service which is tailor-made for you. Steven Schwamm, AREINZ, National Diploma in Real Estate (Agent), National Certificate in Real Estate (Branch Manager) - With over ten years experience in the real estate industry, Steven joined Property Brokers in 2011 as the company’s youngest sales consultant and immediately made his mark – winning the Young Professionals in Real Estate NZ Rising Star award and Property Brokers coveted Residential Rookie of the Year 2012. Well qualified with his real estate Diploma and Branch Manager’s Certificate, he is also the youngest licensee in Property Brokers country to hold an Agency license and is also an Associate of the Real Estate Institute NZ (AREINZ).

Jared Smith, BA, GradDip - Known around Waverley for the rugby and racing coverage when he was Sports Editor of the Whanganui Chronicle, Jared is a dedicated professional who has met and worked with locals and stakeholders alike of all backgrounds. Astute with meeting deadlines and listening to what you need, Jared values accuracy and clear understanding of the process of selling real estate, and the need to reassure clients that their best interests are paramount. Raised in Nelson and getting university qualifications in Christchurch and Wellington, Jared became a seasoned worker through his journalism and editing roles. Always more comfortable in the rural towns without the traffic jams and having opportunities to make his own mark, Jared loves the appeal of provincial living and getting into the community. Steven’s and Jared’s easy-going nature and positivity fits perfectly in the team environment, such as this new partnership for South Taranaki. Together they have achieved outstanding results for their clients because they cover all the angles and are determined to reassure people that their interests are safeguarded. This is reflected in their market commentary, strategies, attention to detail, and tailormade communication based on the needs of each client. Steven and Jared can get the top market dollar for your property by finding the right buyer from any corner of the country and beyond.

South Taranaki, do you think your new rateable value is accurate? Contact the team that is ready to do the hard yards in your back yard for their opinion on market value!

Kakaramea School Together We Achieve And just like that, the year is nearly over! Kakaramea school kids have been working hard with assessments leading up to Home and School Partnership meetings. The warmer weather has inspired a deep clean of the pool which was looking more like a duck pond over winter, and the kids are chomping at the bit to jump in there and splash around. We have had a changing of the guard here at Kakaramea School, bidding farewell to the fabulous Laurie Kinaston, Kanchan Rani and Liberty van Voorthuysen. Laurie has been relieving at Kakaramea School for a while now, but is looking forward to training to be a Reading Recovery Teacher at Hawera Primary. Kanchan has been teaching in the senior room but will be returning to her family in Auckland next year. Liberty came to Kakaramea as a beginner teacher and after teaching the new entrants for almost four years is stretching her wings, ready for the next adventure. We wish them all the best in their new endeavours! Introducing our three new teachers for 2022; Marinda van Dyk, Yvette Batten and Carissa Laracy-Talbot. Marinda comes to us from Wainui School and is a vastly experienced teacher with an extensive skill set. Yvette is a Taranaki local who is currently based in New Plymouth and is completing her final papers towards her teaching diploma following a lengthy career as a reporter. Carissa is currently teaching in Palmerston North and has worked extensively in the Early Childhood sector both in New Zealand and overseas. We welcome them all to our school!

A massive congratulations to our fabulous junior teacher Mrs Natalie Tai who has won the recognition of Teach NZ for being an Advanced Classroom Expertise Teacher, aka The Pro! A huge effort and well-deserved, we are so lucky to have you at Kakaramea School!

The Kakaramea School Librarians hosted a poetry competition recently. Ka pai to all who entered! Here are the winning entries…

School is fun, by Ruby Murdoch Roses are red Violets are blue School is the best and I know it is true My favourite subject is maths The library is cool Lots of books to explore Fun and games just through the door! Free as the wind, by Hollie Fowler With thundering hooves and a flick of their mane Running along the rough terrain A stallion as black as coal leads his herd over the stone. There’s no path that we follow, no track to be seen. Nothing but freedom, and freedom is free.

We recently had Cecilie from Swimsafe New Zealand come teach the tamariki about water safety and what to do when you find yourself in a sticky situation. Thank you for sharing your knowledge on these extremely vital life skills! Congratulations to Laurie Kinaston who recently celebrated her lengthy (20+ years!) service to education at the NZEI dinner. It’s lovely to witness such dedication to the craft and to think of all the tamariki you have helped shape throughout your time in the classroom. The bus kids enjoying their new shelter a perfect place to sit and ponder life, in all weather.

Waverley Primary School Principal’s message: What an amazing year we have had at Waverley Primary School. Although COVID has tried to make things difficult for us we have managed to have a spectacular year. Earlier this term we had our Production titled “Let the Games Begin”. What an amazing show the children put on. Definitely one of the highlights of 2021. I want to congratulate all of our 2021 prize winners. Please see below for our full list of prizes. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Staff, Board, Students and Community of Waverley Primary School. We have had a challenging year together with all of the COVID interruptions, government mandates and weather interrupted events but we still manage to press on and have a blast doing it. To all of the children leaving us for further education at high school, we wish you all the best for your future. To those of you who are joining us next year, we will see you on the 1st February 2022. Have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Tim Marriott, Principal End of year Celebration What a fantastic end of year celebration we had at Waverley Primary School. Students enjoyed engaging in water play, the water slide was a big hit! Students also enjoyed zooming around on their wheels together, showing their creative side using chalk and team building activities.
