Taranaki Indoor Sheep Dog Trial Club Annual Showring Event The Taranaki Indoor Sheep Dog Trial Club held their annual Showring event in the TSB Stadium Egmont A&P Showgrounds Hawera 2nd, 3rd & 4th July after missing 2020 because of the Covid 19 pandemic. It was great to see the club back on track, with record entries and wonderful sponsorship from the many Taranaki wide businesses that support us and our chosen community service which this year was St John Hawera. The club President Ian Smith from Waverley donated $2200 to St John Rep Donna Phillips at the end of the prize giving. The judge even donated his fees to St John Hawera. Mighty Mix Dog Food Ltd, our major sponsor had their Taranaki Rep Jan Wilson on site for the duration of the trail. She did a wonderful job issuing numbered bibs to competitors and lending a hand where she could, the club cannot THANK her and her family enough! Taranaki Steelformers (Brendon Back), Hawera Farmlands (Hamish Winks), Ingram Contracting (Joseph Ingram), Todd Energy, Sandfords Rural Carriers, Toi Foundation (TSB Community Trust) NZ Farmers Livestock (Stratford), Furlong Motor Inn, Peta M Homeware & Gifts, Eltham Vet Services, Upside Down Eatery, PGG Wrightsons Hawera, NP Vet Group, NZ Adventures 4WD Tours, Silver Fern Farms, Placemakers Hawera, & Brewer Bros (sheep providers) are just some of our Taranaki sponsors. Without your input our annual event would not be the success it is, and the club would not be able to give back to the community! Wanganui sponsors Palamountain, Wanganui Farm Supplies and Wanganui Veterinary Services also supported us. The event was Judged by John Harvey from the Wairarapa. He was ably assisted by his wife Yvonne as timekeeper. The club made some changes to the actual trial course which improved the flow, different obstacles, and the new liberating and put away areas were a huge improvement. With a smaller number of Taranaki Triallists entering the event this year, although there were quite a few former Taranaki men and woman who entered the event, it was great to see three Taranaki men make the runoff - Loyd Bishop with Prue, Ken Lobb & Kris, and Dan Murphy & Trace, who was unable to come back for the final, which saw 14 triallists and dogs vying for the top prize and the coveted Bruce Harvey Memorial Trophy. Loyd and Prue placed 4th in the final and Ken Lobb with Kris was 5th a great effort. Three young novice competitors ran on Sunday under the individual guidance of top dog men. Loyd Bishop took Joe Smith (grandson of Ian & Nancey Smith) from Tututawa under his wing, Bob Berger showed Sam Cranstone from Wanganui how to do it and Leo Jecentho walked round with Charlie Ross and his dog Kim. All three men are previous winners of the event. Williams Brewer’s ewe hoggets provided some excellent dog trialing over the weekend and an extremely high standard was set in the runoff with the top 5 dogs separated by mere 10ths of points.

The bible is built upon a lot of prophecy. It may take weeks, years, centuries for it to come into fulfilment. The wonder of God’s word is that right up to today all prophecy that was spoken and recorded about Jesus has come true. There is other prophecy as well. There is one such happening prophesied 1,000 years before a happening that changed the course of life. This was spoken of what would happen to Jesus 1,000 years before it came into being. It spoke accurately about how Jesus would die, on a cross that was never heard of at that time! Truly astounding! It mentions His garment not being torn but worn through “cast lots for my clothing”. The accuracy and details are amazing, there is no coincidence with these prophetic words, these words were spoken by King David of Israel. A remarkable man / King who was fearless in battle and yet able to put ink to scroll so that authenticity would be very clear to one and all, so future generations may reflect on God’s powerful plan for all mankind. Nations will come into the presence of God to inherit Eternal Life, this is clearly spoken also in God’s word, not just for the Jew but for everyone. What catches my thoughts of late a lot is the seemingly indifference to God and His Son Jesus Christ. He has moved “mountains” to make it clear to all, His sincere desire for all to enter into Eternity with Him, there is really just one step you need to make and that is a step of repentance, a strong desire to want to change or turn from your sinful ways. God has already made a way for you to do so, it was prophesied 1,000 years before it happened – Jesus Christ dying on a cross for the sins of the world and then, rising from the grave 3 days later, this too was prophesied centuries before it came into being! To you who doubts God’s existence and dismiss the bible as something irrelevant, I would encourage you to reassess your thoughts that are perhaps based on what others say, find out the truth for yourself. Why? Because on the day of judgement you alone will be held accountable for your conclusion over God’s word and more importantly your stance / views of Jesus Christ. Prophets have spoken the truth, because time is the best test of prophecy, if nothing that they fortell does not come into happening, time will show them up as being false! To close on another prophecy: “All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the Lord, and all the families of the nations will bow down before Him, for dominion belongs to the Lord and He rules over the nations”. Inevitably the day is going to dawn and we will all stand before God’s judgement, swift and fair He will be, but it will be too late for some who have persuaded themselves not to believe. What truly amazes me is that God gives you your sovereignty and you get to decide, “choose you this day whom you will serve, and as for me and my family, we will serve the Lord”. Take the time to be certain of your choice. Come Lord Jesus Ted Reeves, Patea

Pātea Community Board Meeting

Notes from the meeting on Wednesday 14 July 2021 at 4pm, provided by the Board Members. The fifth meeting for the year was held at the Hunter Shaw Building. Present were: Pātea Community Board members; Jacq, Dianne, Maria, Janine Maruera (Community Development Officer), Vannessa Bowles (PA), Liam Dagg (Group Manager Environmental Services) Apologies: Jo Peacock, Phil Nixon (Mayor), Rob Northcott (Pātea Ward Councillor). Open Forum: For the first time in many years there were no locals in attendance, and therefore no open forum. Councillors were at a National Council's Conference in Blenheim so we just had a quorum. Meeting was conducted in usual the manner. Discussion about Waka Kotahi ‘slow down traffic’ trial at Waverley. Mixture of feedback from public – loss of parking spaces, trucks struggling to navigate narrow space, pedestrians using them like a pedestrian crossing, which they aren’t, strong colour of paint on troughs, but also feedback that it has really slowed down the traffic. Liam reported on the large number of building consents that are coming into Council at the moment. Two new staff members being employed to process them. Planting project at the cemetery will be proceeding soon. Native plantation will be planted on the hill overlooking the cemetery. Full minutes of this and all Council meetings can be found on the South Taranaki District Council Website, under the heading ‘Our Council’ then go to ‘Mayor & Elected members’ then ‘Community Board - Pātea’ or view them at Pātea or Waverley Library Plus. Patea Retro There is a new face at 59 Egmont Street, Patea. That face belongs to Jack, who has bought the building and taken over the shop, after having moved from Opunake. Jack is making Patea his home, believing Patea has a bright future. Looking at getting in more retro items as times goes by, Jack also stocks his own woodcraft creations as well. The shop and building are undergoing a big transformation, so check out the progress of the new look and layout for the shop. On Sundays the Patea Markets are held outside of Patea Retro. The shop is open Fri, Sat, and Sun, 10am – 3pm at this stage, with a view to opening more days in the future. Come on in and say hello to Jack.

Caper Spurge

Local Waiinu Beach resident Graham Ellett went searching for Coastal Sea Spurge after reading the warning sign erected at the settlement. Fortunately he did not find any. However he did find a surprising amount of Caper spurge (Euphorbia lathyris). This invasive Australian weed is toxic, its milky sap particularly dangerous to sensitive skin and the eyes. Folk have needed emergency treatment after touching this. Graham is keen to raise awareness and if possible to slow the spread of the plant before it travels even further and others, or their animals, are affected. Although this plant has been in New Zealand for some time, in just a few years the plant arrived locally and has travelled through reserve land, across to the campground in one direction and to farmland in the opposite direction. It can also be found along the roadside. Capsules split open throwing the seeds some distance. The seeds then travel carried by water or the wind. According to some, it is “just another weed” (which should be treated carefully). While attempting to slow the spread might seem an exercise in futility, Graham believes that it is worthwhile to try, and with help, this could still be achieved. He will continue the best he can.

Patea Old Folks Assoc Annual Report The annual report was read at the AGM held on 8th July 2021 at the Patea Old Folks Hall. President’s Annual Report On behalf of our President, Robert Northcott, I present the 2021 annual President’s report. Twelve months’ ago, the Patea Community and then current members elected a new committee to keep this association ticking over. Committee members elected at that meeting were: President: Robert Northcott Secretary: Rose Cowley Treasurer: Dora Baker Committee: Robin Ansley, Karen Phillips, Ann Ansley, Laurie Mildenhall, Tom Matiaha, Jacq Dwyer, Allan Caple. At the first committee meeting the appointments were made for: Hall booking contact: Dora Baker Account signatories: Robert Northcott, Rose Cowley, Dora Baker During the ensuing meeting to comply with the Associations Constitution the committee appointed a Vice President. Robin Ansley (myself) took on this role and was added to the account signatories. During the year Dora Baker moved out of Patea and resigned as Treasurer and our hall booking contact. At that time Barbara Martin agreed to take on the Treasurer’s role and Rose Cowley agreed to take on the hall booking contact role. Both of these appointments were ratified at a Committee Meeting and the bank account signatories were updated. During the year Marie Dwyer, on our behalf, applied for and succeeded in getting us a COGS grant of $4,000 per year for three years. Thank you, Marie; without that grant we would not have the funds to continue operating or would have to do a lot of fundraising. Also, during the year the Committee has appointed two additional committee members. Those appointments are Mareta Masters Grubner and Mollie Oliver. Welcome and thank you Mareta and Mollie. With the demise of cheque accounts, we were forced to get up with the times and registered for online banking. The authorisers and confirmers for online transactions are the same four members who are signatories on the Association’s two bank accounts: Robert Northcott, Robin Ansley, Rose Cowley and Barbara Martin. For security reasons no payments can be made without input from two authorized persons confirming any payment. The committee also decided to change the savings account to TSB Bank in the hope that in the future we would be able to apply for more grants from them. This change has not yet been made but will come under more urgency after tonight’s election of Officers. Laurie Mildenhall has become our maintenance man and has done repairs to the roof to keep it waterproof during the past year. Laurie has also done repairs on the two back doors of the hall to get then up to compliance for our safety certificate as well as on our electrical switchboard to get it up to date for compliance. Laurie has also assessed what paint we need, to do some repainting in the hall, and the paint has been bought from Resene with a very generous discount from them. The repainting will commence during the coming year under Laurie’s leadership. Thank you, Laurie, for your efforts on these and numerous other maintenance tasks. Karen and Jaqc have maintained and replanted the garden at the front of the hall. Over time the plantings will flourish and enhance the appearance of the hall frontage. Thanks to Karen and Jaqc for your efforts. Tom Matiaha has maintained our lawns and continues to mow our front and rear lawns to keep them in tidy condition. Thank you, Tom, for your efforts. Thanks to Rose Cowley for your continuing efforts as Secretary, and also for taking on the role of hall booking contact. Thanks to Barbara Martin for taking over as Treasurer. It is never easy to take over this role halfway through a financial year when someone else has set the course. Thank you, Ann, for the suppers you bring each month to our committee meetings. Thank you to our entire committee for their efforts during the year, attending meetings, working bees and all the unseen efforts by you all. I think we have managed to keep this Association going as expected and have far exceeded our own expectations with what we have achieved during the past year. We were a totally new committee and have found our way very comfortably. In conclusion, I would like to thank Robert Northcott for taking the role of President of the Patea Old Folks Association at a time of so much of an unknown future. We al know how much you are involved in the community and look forward to your continuing membership. Thank you. Robin Ansley, Vice President

Kia Ora Koutou, We spend the last two weeks of each term assessing each child to see the progress they have made each term and our Staff enjoy discussing this collaboratively before planning for the following term. Both classes enjoyed their visits to the Waverley library to celebrate and learn about Puanga. We are really lucky to have these resources available to us who can deliver relevant kaupapa in a fun and engaging way. The Westmere School Production was a hit with our tamariki. Thanks again to all the parents who provided transport. Without you our trips would not be possible. The last week of term we had our Hauora day at the Splash Centre and Kowhai Park. Students have been working really hard this term and it was a well deserved treat for them. I took a group of Year 8’s to the Whanganui High School Open day. We are currently investigating ways to help our students transition to larger schools and this group visit will enable our year 8s to visualise High School and begin to look forward to their High School years. Well done to our hockey team who entered the contributing schools hockey competition on Tuesday alongside 17 other teams. They were great representatives of Waitotara School. Our hall renovations are coming along nicely. This is going to create so much extra space for our students.Below are some photos of progress. Looking forward to another exciting term. Polly Devane, Principal

Senior room art

Last week on Wednesday 1st of July all of Waitotara school went to Westmere School to watch their production. It was about a girl and boy called Peter and Matilda They were a brother and sister who thought they were too old for their school dress up day so their mother and aunt tried to persuade them to change their minds by taking them through fairy tales and Disney movies including Mulan, Frozen, Cinderella, Moana, Aladdin, Snow White and Rapunzel. It had a few songs scattered through it and had a number of different lights and sound effects. It was very important to watch their play and show our support and overall I thought it was a good play although the story was a bit hard to follow and the strobe lights were distracting. I really liked it and think Westmere has a couple of future singers. By Amelia On the 30th of June the Senior Class went up to Waverley LibraryPlus to learn about Puanga, the bright star that the Taranaki district sees before Matariki. Once we got to the library Laine and Eileen greeted the Seniors at the doorway. We huddled in the entrance to listen to what we were doing. Then Eileen got us into two parallel lines and we linked arms with a buddy then Eileen told us some commands 1 whistle was turn left and 2 whistles was turn right and down was to walk on our knees we were pretending to be in a waka. Laine was at the back and another leader was at the front then Eileen set us to sail the seven seas in a waka - well just around the library there were a lot of traffic jams worse than Auckland at rush hour. I mean if we were cars AA insurance would be bankrupt by now! Once we reached land we got separated into two iwi then we had to choose two leaders for each iwi. Quinton and I were leaders for one iwi and Liam and Anna were the leaders for the other group. We sat down and listened to a story about Puanga but there was a twist... after Eileen finished the story she tested us to see who was listening to the story and if you could repeat what she said you would get a point. If you could say it in Maori you would get 2 points. I think my group won (not being biased or anything). After that Anna and I were chosen to have the responsibility to feed our starving children (not really they were fine but there was another twist, I swear Eileen pulls theses twist to make her team win). Oh well the twist was you could not touch the red mat that had the kai moana on it we got handed fishing roads to try catch the fish but I didn't use the rod it was rigid. We had ten seconds to grab as much as we could I ended up grabbing 8 fish and Anna grabbed 7 we won the round then it was the boy leaders turn Quinton and Liam were very um lets say competitive. Quinton scored 6 and Liam scored 6. We ended up with 14 and the others got 13 we won! By Teriellen

On the 22 of June Mekah, Chelsea, Riley, Matiu, Lachan, Malachai and I went to the inter school hockey competition at Gonville Turf. In the competition we came 6th place out of 18 teams. We played 6 games with 10 minutes each half. I love playing hockey, it is fun. By Zara

Waverley Primary School Principal’s Message Dear Parents/Caregivers, We have had an amazing Term 2 here at Waverley Primary School. It has been a very busy 10 weeks of school. I want to thank all of the teachers and support staff for their efforts throughout the year. We have an amazing team here who often go above and beyond. Your hard work is greatly appreciated. On Friday last week we had probably the best school disco in school history. I really want to thank Gemma Comrie and her amazing team of ladies for all of the effort that went into the organisation, decoration, and running of the event. Things like this don’t just run themselves. It takes a lot of careful planning and consideration to make something like this a success. Thank you very much. During the first week of the school holiday we will have the dental bus here at Waverley Primary School on Tuesday 13th July and Thursday 15th July. If you are a parent who has children who missed their appointment in 2020 the dental service will be contacting you regarding an appointment. If you have not had a phone call from them please call in on Tuesday morning and make an appointment. We are hoping that we will have a more suitable time later in the year to start the 2021 appointments. A quick reminder that we have Student led conferences in Term 3. Monday 2 and Tuesday 3 August. More information will come out to families regarding the conferences early in Term 3. I hope everyone has a safe and happy Term 2 break and I look forward to seeing you all back here on Monday 26th July for a busy term 3. There is a lot going on next term. Nominations open for region's Environmental Awards

Nominations have opened for this year’s Taranaki Regional Council Environmental Awards, which recognise efforts to protect and enhance the environment – at any scale from neighbourhood to regional. The Council has presented 313 environmental awards since the programme began in 1993. “We cast the net wide,” says the Council Chairman, David MacLeod. “Our winners have ranged from school students to major corporates, from farmers to iwi and hapū-led initiatives, from District Councils to grassroots conservation groups. “What they have in common is the Taranaki ‘get on and do it’ attitude. It’s a major reason that the region is a great place to live, work and play. People in all walks of life are pulling their weight on behalf of the environment and taking Taranaki forward.” An online nomination form is available on the Council website, www.trc.govt.nz/enter-awards-2021. People can nominate themselves or their organisation, or another person or organisation. Nominations close on 24 August and the awards will be presented in late October. The awards are made in five categories: • Environmental leadership in business. • Environmental leadership in dairy farming, sponsored by Fonterra. • Environmental leadership in land management, sponsored by Corteva. • Environmental action in the community. • Environmental action in education, sponsored by Contact Energy. Sponsorship support allows the awards to be presented at a catered evening function.

We’re going to make an outing of the day, as we will go out for lunch prior to the meeting. We look forward to new members joining with us; we meet on the 3rd Wednesday of each month except January at 3 Suter Street, Waverley at 11.30 am, starting with a shared lunch at noon. Each month we have a programme that covers craft, cooking and flowers but one doesn’t need to partake in the competitions. We have an annual subscription as we are an affiliated Institute. Waverley United Indoor Bowling Club With the wet, windy and cold weather two nights of bowling were cancelled, along with our trip to visit Eastown in Wanganui. Stuart Buckman won the Hickford Memorial Singles competition. Our triples have been played, with the winners being Wayne Berry (S), Cathy Roydhouse (2) and Lyn Smailes (L). Junior singles have been played, with the winner being Simon Aiken. While the final of the junior singles was being played the senior Champion of Champion Pairs played their games. Winners were Wayne Berry (S) and Stuart Buckman (L). Congratulations to everyone. We have done well over the last couple of months, not requiring Kerry to come and sort the hall alarm for us, though it seems some nights it’s not hard to nearly punch in the old code number. For a small club we are struggling, and it would be great to see new members or past members return. If interested you are most welcome to contact John Smailes, 06 346 5408 or Dale Mitchell, 069 346 5488. Happy bowling!

‘Growing Personal Excellence’

Hi everyone, As Term 2 came to a close, we took the time to ponder and appreciate another action packed ten weeks full of achievement, learning, teamwork and friendships. Tuakana Hive students have produced some lovely poetry which they are very proud of and we have shared some with you below. A highlight of the term was hosting the Francis Douglas Memorial College 1st XV Rugby team for morning tea on their way to a game in Hastings. Very inspiring for some of our young sportspeople. We look forward to more of the same as we enter Term 3. Events on the calendar include our Cross Country, Pet Day and Cycle Safety Day.

Unveiling of the Pehimana whanau headstones On Saturday 26 June we unveiled two headstones at the Patea Cemetery for members of the Pehimana family who died during the influenza epidemic in 1918. There was a large group of family members from Ratana and Patea in attendance, the rain held off until we got into the Hunter Shaw Building. To follow is my speech which outlines the Pehimana Story: ‘Before Kaumatua Sandy Parata starts with our karakia I want to give a few acknowledgements. Sandy is a close family connection to the Haweturi’s so it is so appropriate he is here. A special welcome to the granddaughter of Sgt Taurua Pehimana and Taihurihia Pehimana - Irene Tai. And a huge thank you to Desiree Docherty from Ratana for being my ‘go to girl’ for the time we have been working on this, and so good to see so many whanau from Ratana here. Welcome and thanks to Staff Sgt Solly Vaetoru from Whanganui 5/7 Batt. for being here and your help with the programme etc. Tom Matiaha our Patea RSA President, and other members of the Patea RSA. Abe Abraham representing Hawera RSA, as well as being our Bugler. Kershaw family, I know you have your family hui today, so this is a special start to your day. Welcome also to Mayor Phil Nixon, Chester and Ella Borrows. The beautiful korowai’s we have here today are from the Kershaw family and the Ratana family. At the end of the service feel free to slip away to the cosy Hunter Shaw building where Molly Cole will be waiting with the doors open and help yourself to a nice cuppa and kai made by Red Rock Catering. I also want to acknowledge Headstone Warehouse Hawera for working through the process of getting these headstones done for us. Tena koutou, Tena koutou, Tena koutou katoa. Nau mai ki te huraina o tēnei kohatu mo te whanau Pehimana I’m going to tell you a bit of what we have discovered about the beautiful people these headstones mark. About 3 years ago Bronwyn from our museum – Aotea Utanganui, found a newspaper article about a Sgt Ngawakataurua Pehimana who went to WWI in February 1915 from Patea. Bronwyn and I are both on the Patea Historical Soc, who have organised this event. So this discovery started a whole chain of events that have brought us to this point today, it is about more than just a story of a man who went to war. At the time I was collating a list of Soldiers from Patea who served in both World Wars, and this man’s service record fascinated me. Sgt Taurua Pehimana’s story is impressive and heart breaking. He enlisted in October 1914 and sailed with the first Maori Contingent of 500 Soldiers from Wellington in February 1915. He rose through the ranks from Private to Corporal then Sergeant within months. His Battalion spent 3 months on the Italian Island of Malta, then landed at Anzac Cove on 3 July 1915. There they joined the Wellington Mounted Rifles, who were being deployed as infantry on the peninsula. During the battle of Chunuk Bair on 8/9 August that year, Sgt Pehimana was one of the 89 badly wounded Maori Battalion soldiers. He had gunshot wounds to his arms and legs and shrapnel in his chest. That shrapnel in the chest would probably have proved fatal if it wasn’t for the belt pouch which stopped its force. The nerves in his right arm were so damaged that it was practically useless for his remaining life, but he survived and returned home to his family. Sgt Pehimana’s mother was Pikihuia Rātana, the sister of Tahupōtiki Wiremu Rātana – founder of Ratana Church. The chief Ngawakataurua of Hukatere was Sgt Pehimana’s paternal great grandfather via whangai it is thought. His wife was Taihurihia Haweturi. She was the sister of Meretakua Haweturi – who is the mother of Eva Kershaw, and of course we have Syd, Wai and other Kershaw family here today. His whakapapa is still strong on our landscape and intertwined in significant families. Back to his story - After months in hospital Sgt Pehimana was welcomed home at a large public party in the Druids Hall here in Patea in February 1916, During the evening His Worship the Mayor (Mr Charles Larcombe) took the opportunity of extending a welcome home to Sgt Pehimana on behalf of the people of Patea. This is reported in the Patea Mail, and it goes on to say - ‘The Turks, Sgt. Pehimana said, in build and features were not unlike the Maori. During his time in hospital he had met several and had tried to pick up their language but it was a very difficult task. He would have liked to have seen the war out but was glad to be back amongst his people once again. He could not thank the people of Patea sufficiently for the hearty welcome they had given him’. Sgt Pehimana was farming before the war, and it is unsure what he was able to do work wise after the war, and he was living in the family homestead of Devon St. Two years and 9 months later WWI came to an end, and Sgt Pehimana is once again mentioned in the Patea Mail. - Just before 11am the Mayor Charles Larcombe stood on the steps of the Town Hall and read the official telegram from the PM, and immediately a procession ‘a quarter of a mile long’ was formed with Town Clerk and ex Gallipoli soldier Noel Clement Harding at the front holding the Union Jack. The Patea Municipal Band were next in the parade, then I quote -came the ‘gigantic figure of Sergeant Taurua Pehimana’ leading local returned WWI Soldiers in full uniform. 26-year-old Sergeant Pehimana was only to live 11 days after that memorable Armistice Day celebration. His ‘exceptionally fine physique’ and determined spirit that got him through the Battle of Chunuk Bair, was not to survive the resolute of H1N1 Influenza. As people were celebrating the end of the War, the flu virus was already circulating in Aotearoa, all the hugging and singing would have escalated its spread that day. It all seems like history repeating itself as we too now live in a world with Covid 19. Sgt Pehimana died on Friday 22 November at Patea hospital. The Patea Mail reports: ‘We regret to have to record the death of Sgt Pehimana which took place at the local hospital on Friday from the prevailing epidemic of influenza. The deceased soldier was of exceptionally fine physique, and was a member of the first native contingent which left New Zealand in the present war. He was among the first to land at Gallipoli and saw much service, being eventually severely wounded in the Suvla Bay engagement where the late Colonel Malone was killed’. The Pehimana family homestead (which is still standing today) at 8 Devon Street saw the death of his wife, Taihurihia Haweturi, the following day, and his mother Pikihuia died 5 days later also of influenza. From what we understand Sgt Pehimana and Taihurihia had 2 children: Malta and Ihipera. Malta died at an earlier time of influenza and in buried in the same plot as Grandmother Pikihuia, who died on 30 November 1918. Their only surviving child Ihipera, was bought up by her great grandmother - Ihipera Koria Rātana, at Ratana. There is the possibility that Taihurihia is buried at Taiporohenui, but there are 2 entries in the Cemetery register book in 1918, one on 25 November for Mrs Senior Pehimana, and one

on 30 November for Mrs Piki Pehimana, so I believe that the first entry is for Taihurihia - the plot of that burial is right next to Sgt Taurua Pehimana. The register book is hard to read at that time with burials entered in a messy order, it would have been chaotic with the flu epidemic raging. The plot to the left of him is his sister Pare who died at the young age of 19 in 1913, and next to her is their father Te Tahua Pehimana, he died on 31 October 1915, while Sgt Pehimana was still in England. So you can see that the entire family apart from Ihipera were interred here within a very short time. The RSA section of the Patea Cemetery didn’t begin until 1947, so there are many servicemen buried in the main part of the cemetery before that time. The interesting thing is that no known photo of this this fine Maori Battalion soldier can be found. Irene told me her mother had a photo of him in full uniform which was taken into Tesla Studios in Whanganui in the 1960’s to be re-framed, it was forgotten for a time and when the family returned to collect it, Tesla Studios was closed and all stock gone. I knew that the Tesla studio negatives went to the Whanganui museum, and have had the curator look through them all, but sadly no photo of that description can be found. And there was no photo of him in the newspaper when he was wounded at Chunuk Bair, which is unusual, especially as he was a Sergeant. But we do have a beautiful photo of his wife Taihurihia and her sister Meretakua. And Bronwyn has found a photo in the Puke Ariki collection that we believe is his mother – Pikihuia. I have the photos here with me today. Even though we don’t have his photo, we have a strong image of this fascinating man. He loved his town of Patea, loved his family and was very respected by all who knew him. Even though 103 years have passed since he died, Taihurihia died, Pikihuia, Malta, they are not forgotten. And I’m sure we will discover more about them as time goes on, but meanwhile we have commemorated their part in our world with these lovely headstones. I’m now going to ask Irene and Syd to unveil them….’ Jacq Dwyer President of Patea Historical Society
