Pātea Historical Society AGM President's Report 7.30pm, Tuesday 5 July 2022 at the Hunter Shaw, Pātea

Tēnā koutou, he mihi nui ki a koutou, ngā kaitiaki, ngā tāngata e rangahau i ngā kōrero o neherā, Nau mai haere mai Ladies and Gentlemen I have much pleasure in presenting the 54th annual Presidents Report of the Pātea Historical Society. Firstly I’d like to acknowledge the dedicated members of our Committee that keep the organization going throughout the year, and come up with more ideas and projects to work on. Our current Patea Historical Society team is: Jim Baker, Michael Parsons, Dave Crompton, Harvey Gibbs, Rob Groat, Bronwyn Wattrus, Roy Hotter, Don Stockwell & myself. And our patron is Howard Anderson. Howard is only ever an email away if I have questions about history of our district. Sadly earlier this year we lost our valued committee member: Joe Bourke. Joe was the kind of person that could and would do anything for Patea and the people that live here, we were so lucky to have him on our committee. We have also lost Arthur Fryer on 17 December 2021, Kevin Hurley on 2nd July, and Robin Astridge on 24 June of this year. Robin was the past president of NZ History Federation. Lets have a moment of silence for them, and all that has been lost with them passing. In our 55th year the current membership of the society stands at around 70 members from all over the country. Our annual accounts have been compiled by Hughson & Associates, our honorary accountant. Pātea Historical Society supports Aotea Utanganui, our Museum, with two appointed members on the trust, Dave Crompton and Jim Baker. We continue to donate the usual annual operational funding of $3000 per year. Which they have appreciated more than ever this year as they focus on getting the new building for machinery and archives finished behind the museum. I’ll now run through a few things that we were a part of since our last AGM… As we had our last AGM on 28 September last year, due to delays with covid lockdowns, the time in between has been shorter than usual, but we have achieved a few things. On 2nd November we had the book launch for Larraine Soles book ‘Called to Colours’ about the WWI soldiers of Waverley and Waitorara. It’s a brilliant book encompassing the stories of hundreds of soldiers that went to War from these areas. Patea Historical paid for the printing of this book, which has now been refunded with sales. Larraine is currently working on a book about the Hotels of Hawera. Over the summer we had the exterior of our Freezing Works Display building painted by Grant Sanson of Waverley. He did a brilliant job of it. Two new black aluminium windows were fitted in the offices at the back, which are rented by Hughson & Associates. They are double glassed and actually open, which will be much easier for them to work in during the summer. Hungers made and installed a large black steel sign for the Lincoln St side of the building too. It says ‘Patea Historical Society est 1967’. We got a grant of $5000 from TSB, and around $300 reimbursement from the Council for painting our building. On 17 January we hosted the Whanganui summer program. This year we explored Patea. We started with a slide show 'A walk through Egmont St through the years' at the Hunter Shaw building, then actually walked Egmont St as it is today, stopping to talk to locals as we did. Then we had lunch at the Old Folks Hall. Followed by a tour through the Museum, then down to the beach, through Mana Bay and over to the wreak of the SS Waitangi, then finished by doing the Patea River Walk, reading the new historical information signage the Council funded and Colin Schrader installed in the summer. Another trip full of discovery and historical information from our area.

Our guest speaker Darren Ngarewa shares his vast knowledge of the Land Wars in our district.

We have done another round of cleaning of some of the older headstones at Patea Cemetery. In doing so we discovered more interesting stories of people buried there. Bronwyn and I have been adding to the Cemetery booklet, which will be used for the fieldtrip we will be holding there in October for the Taranaki Heritage month event we will be hosting. We have paid Headstone Warehouse to fix two headstones, one which was a huge granite slab in danger of falling if someone lent on it, and the other is a large marble cross that needed to be set back into its spot. John Valentine Smith and Heinrich Schulze. On 3 September this year it will be 40 years since the Patea Freezing Works closed. South Taranaki District Council are putting a memorial down by the entrance to The Works, and restoring the old gates. We have had an open day at our Freezing Works Display building on 22 May and will be having another on Saturday 16 July. It gives people the opportunity to come along, reminisce and tell us some of their stories. We have had an information sign made for the wreck of the SS Waitangi down at the beach. It will be 100 years since it was washed up on the beach after hitting the wall next year, and it is really exposed from the sand at the moment. It’s a good opportunity to let people know about it. I have published 2 books about the History of Alton and Families of Alton. They are full of fascinating stories of this busy little village up Ball Road and are selling well. In the months ahead we will be working with Darren Ngarewa to get his amazing research about the many Pa sites in the South Taranaki area put into a book. Watch this space, its going to be an amazing publication, in fact it will be two books at least! And we are so fortunate to have him as our guest speaker tonight. When I was writing this report up, I thought wow, we did fit a lot in this year. We have over 3000 people having liked our facebook page now, that is the way to capture so many people these days, and share our stories. We really appreciate all of you PHS members supporting us by paying your subs, finding us old photos and info, and turning up when we have events, you are all a valuable part of this Society, so thank you for your input. Jacq Dwyer President of Patea Historical Society

A Christian Word Forgiveness: such a huge thing to do! I thought about all the Jews who were captured for no reasons & forced into rail wagons & sent, against their will to concentration camps & finally again for no reasons, exterminated/murdered. One has to try to put oneself in their predicament & survive, as some did, then to eventually come to a place in their life’s, where they forgave. The strength of our emotions would be too strong, we would want first & foremost an eye for an eye! There are from my own personal observations, people who have been through their own hells, things buried deep in their hearts, things that fester away with a long-term plan of revenge, they have been invaded, so to speak, things have happened against their free wills, who were forced to be victims. We don’t like that one little bit! We want blood!! Contrary to our feelings & our own need for revenge, the Bible takes a very opposite view & yes it can be hard to understand sometimes. Some of those survivors from those camps came to that place in their lives of forgiving, what a powerful place to be! When we come to realize our need for a Savior, the first thing that is required of us, is repentance, a turning away from all the ugly in our lives & surprisingly, not only is it easy, but also a relief, no more carrying a false guilt around. Mathew 6:14 tells us that if we forgive those who sin against us, then God Almighty will forgive us of our sins also. But here’s the truth in what seems back to front, once we can forgive, it is not a confession of guilt or letting the other get off Scot free! What it does is release you from that place & the person, who took you captive, they will certainly never get away, there will be consequences! You however, will know you are free, a healing will begin to erase all memory, & all the scars you have, God will honor His word to you, just as in Christ, God will forgive you, but you need to forgive first. A very hard thing to do, personally, from my own experience, the sooner your able to, the stronger & healthier you will be & let’s face it, to be led out of those camps into freedom is beyond our understanding, till it happens. This is the power & beauty of Jesus, He can & will set you free, when you ask Him to… Freedom!! Come Lord Jesus Ted Reeves, Patea

Make Your Mark on South Taranaki Local body elections candidate nominations have opened

If you want to make your mark on your community, consider standing for the South Taranaki District Council in this year’s local body elections. South Taranaki District Council (STDC) chief executive, Waid Crockett says despite the challenges it’s an exciting time to be involved in local government. “With a huge raft of government reforms and the effects of COVID-19 still impacting it’s a challenging time, but also one which provides a unique opportunity to be involved in the changing face of local government,” says Crockett. “The rewards certainly outweigh the challenges, as you work together to make the best decisions for the future economic, social, cultural and environmental wellbeing of our District,” he says. Nominations open on Friday 15 July and close at 12noon on Friday 12 August. There are changes at this year’s election following a Representation Review which established two Māori Wards with one representative each (Te Kūrae and Te Tai Tonga) and amended Councillor numbers in the General Wards - Te Hāwera (5), Taranaki Coastal (2), Pātea (2) and Eltham-Kaponga (2). Patea Golf Club June/July 2022 The first Shootout for 2022 was held on Saturday 25th June with 10 members participating. The first player eliminated was Wallace Sanson when he was almost out of bounds and took too many chips to get onto the first green. The second player eliminated was Gerald Rutten when he conceded after to many chips to get onto the second green. On the 3rd Hole a putt off was required between Ray Finlay and Steve Honeyfield and Steve was closest to the pin so Ray was eliminated. On the 4th Hole Phil Cassidy almost putt his drive in the Tasman Sea and his drive was not found so he was eliminated. On the 5th Hole a poor chip and 3 putts by Nick Williams had him eliminated. Some short fairway shots up the 6th hole and a nett score of 7 eliminated Neil Edgcombe. On the 7th hole Robert Bourke missed a short putt and he was eliminated .On the 8th hole Steve Honeyfield recorded a nett 6 to be eliminated so the players left to play the eighteenth hole were Cyril Faiers and Roger Edgecombe. Cyril did not have a shot on this hole and both players ended up with a nett 6 so a chip off was required and Cyril was closest to the pin and the winner of the shootout. Moody Mugs This is the main competition played over the winter months. It is a two ball best ball competition and after five rounds only one pair have two lives left. Kakaramea School ‘Together We Achieve’ July was a super busy wee one here at Kakaramea School. Our rugby team won the Bhana Cup, we held our mid-winter raffle, welcomed ERO into our community, our special students made some special animal friends, and the teaching staff went on tour visiting Waikato Schools. Sharing Professional Practice Earlier this month our four teaching staff and principal visited three schools in the Waikato to share ideas and further develop our professional practice. We visited Te Aroha Primary School, Rototuna Primary School and Te Ao Marama School near Hamilton. Each of these schools were incredibly welcoming and our staff picked up many gifts of knowledge to store in our educational kete.

Education Review Office visit Throughout this month our school community has been diligently preparing for the first visit from Catherine Ledge from the Education Review Office. She was officially welcomed onto the school on Thursday July 7. To mark the occasion our staff, pupils and board presented our first whakatau, a less formal version of powhiri for her. This marks the beginning of a relationship that will span the next few years and help guide us towards our next big steps as a school. We look forward to working alongside her. Ms Ledge was officially called into the whakatau with a karanga led by students and staff.

Catherine Ledge, centre, speaks to us as a school and thanks us for our warm welcome. Our staff were officially welcomed onto Te Aroha Primary School with a whakatau, a less formal powhiri. Winter Sports Tournament Our school joined the Southern Cluster and played alongside Whenukura School, Mokoia School, Patea Area School and St Joseph’s Patea School for this tournament. Sports featured included rugby, netball, hockey and soccer. Our rugby team came first and won the Bhana Cup and the hockey team came third. A successful day was had by all.

Post-match celebrations with the winning rugby team, which won the Bhana Cup. Our rugby team was so proud of winning the Bhana Cup during the winter sports tournament.

Some of our student leaders in their school attire represented us during Ms Ledge’s visit and shared their student voice.

August 2022 - 7 RDA visit Several of our students went out and about on a trip to Riding for Disabled today followed by a treat at McDonald’s. Our students Ashen, left, and Matthew, centre, enjoyed making new four-legged friends at RDA.

Maxwell Kindergarten This month our tamariki have been expressing their great sense of imagination and creativity within our outdoor and indoor spaces. They have been involved in lots of role play and using loose parts (open ended materials that can be turned into anything) to re-create and share their knowledge and understanding of the real world with their friends. Our new green wagon has been a well-used resource to transport materials and cart their friends around the playground. To support the children’s role play of cooking in the sandpit, with playdough and in the family play corner we have been making some kai to share with each other.

Results from Taranaki Indoor Sheep Dog Trial 2022 The Taranaki Mighty Mix Indoor Sheep Dog Trial held their 13th annual event last weekend, in the TSB Stadium at the Egmont A&P Showgrounds. There were 202 actual runs, with 19 lady competitors who between them ran 45 dogs. Only one lady made the final Robyn Stephens and Jake who were 4th overall. Wanganui Centre was well represented with last year’s winner Merv Williams and Brim from Raetihi back to defend their title. Merv's brother Peter Williams from Hawkes Bay had an absolutely stunning weekend making the top 15 finalists with four dogs placing 2nd with Guide, 3rd with Star, 7th with Roger and 15th with Neve. Leo Jecentho from the Waikato spoilt Peter's party taking out the top prize and the Bruce Harvey memorial trophy with Rob. Leo has won this event before. The club donated $3,000 to the Taranaki Rescue Helicopter. This annual event is one of the most popular on the Indoor Showring calendar and caters for all classes of competitor and dogs. The venue is just a superb place to hold this event at this time of the year, there is no way it could be held outdoors. Trial entry secretary Brenda O'Leary from Fordell, who is also the Wanganui Dog Trial Centre's Publicity Officer and was previously the overall Secretary of this event said that the trial even taking place was a massive effort, with members and helpers going down with Covid daily leading up to the trial. Club President Ian Smith from Waverley is the calm head in the eye of a storm and steered the club through. Huge thanks to everyone who pitched in at short notice, travelled to work sheep and help set up the course in the arena. Taranaki's new Centre President Ken Lobb from Whangamomona was massive and put in a few miles, helping out and even managed to get back to compete in the runoff despite having a digger working on his farm. The Brewer Brothers supplied the sheep for the event, Judge Laurie Horsfall from Hawkes Bay said it was the best final he had ever Judged. Applications Open to STDC’s Community Initiative Fund Applications are open to the South Taranaki District Council’s Community Initiatives Fund. South Taranaki District Council group manager of community and infrastructure services, Fiona Aitken says the Community Initiatives Fund (CIF) replaces the previous practice whereby groups applied for money during the Council’s Long Term and Annual Planning process. “With the CIF, organisations can apply each year from July and will be allocated grants from a set pool of money,” says Aitken. “The fund is designed to support community initiatives and activities that will make positive contributions to the social, economic, environmental, and cultural well-being of the community. Applicants should also see this as a complementary funding source not a primary one, and priority may be given to applicants who can demonstrate they are seeking other sources of funding.” Aitken says the pool of money available in the Community Initiative Fund is established every three years through the Council’s Long-Term Plan budget setting process. “This year the Fund has $67,460 available to distribute (from an original pool of approximately $240,000) due to previous grants being allocated over a three year period,” she says. Further information and application forms for the Community Initiative Fund can be found on the South Taranaki District Council website southtaranaki.com under Funding and Grants Applications close at 5 pm on Wednesday 24 August 2022.

Rates Rebate Scheme to Help Low-Income Households With the changes to the rates rebate scheme, approximately 100,000 low-income households will receive increased support to pay their council rates from 1 July, Local Government Minister Nanaia Mahuta announced on 29 June 2022. The maximum annual rebate increased from $665 to $700, and the income abatement threshold increased from $26,510 to $28,080 for the year to March 2022. “The refunds are estimated to be worth up to $56 million a year,” the Minister says. She also added that it will be a relief to individuals and families that require assistance in meeting the cost of their rates. South Taranaki District Council Chief Executive Waid Crockett said increasing support will mean more low-income households will be eligible for the rebates in the district depending on the individual circumstances. “Some people might qualify for the full rebate, while others might qualify for less.” To apply for the rebate, people must provide a summary of earnings from the IRD as proof of their income level. It must relate to the period 1 April 2021 to 31 March 2022. “If you are not sure whether you are eligible to apply, call us on 0800 111 323. Council staff are available to assist you with scheme details and forms. We encourage ratepayers to take advantage of this government initiative.” “Applicants who qualified for the previous year are sent a new application form each year. To make sure they remember to reapply” says Crockett. “But you need to get your application into the Council before 30 June 2023, or it won’t be accepted.” You can apply for a rates rebate if: • You are on a low income (if you earn up to $49,000 max, depending on the level of your rates, you might be eligible for some rate rebate) • You must pay rates on the address you live at, and • You were living there at the beginning of the rating year (1 July), and • Your name is on the rates bill, or • You are the owner of an “Owner-occupier flat” and your name is not on the bill, but you pay some of the rates (proof is required).

Council Increases Earthquake Prone Building Assistance South Taranaki commercial building owners can apply for assistance to strengthen or redevelop their earthquake prone buildings following a recent Council decision to increase its Earthquake Prone Buildings Assistance Package. South Taranaki District Council (STDC) Group Manager of Environmental Services Liam Dagg says the decision made in May this year sees the Council’s Earthquake Prone Buildings Assistance Package go from $6,000 up to a maximum of $10,000. “Dealing with earthquake buildings is not cheap or easy and this package is something Council can do to help towards the cost of strengthening or redeveloping commercial property sites that have been identified as earthquake prone,” says Dagg. The assistance comes in two tranches, with up to $5,000 available when the building consent is granted and up to $5,000 when at least 50% of the physical work has been completed. Dagg says following new earthquake prone building legislation that came into effect in July 2017, the Council must identify all earthquake prone buildings in the District by 1 July 2027. “Once a building has been identified as potentially earthquake prone the owner must provide the Council with a seismic assessment report from a suitably qualified seismic engineer within 12 months. If, based on that report, the building proves to be earthquake prone the owner has 12.5 years to strengthen or demolish it if it’s a priority building, or 25 years if it’s not.” Further information on earthquake - prone buildings including the Council’s Assistance Package can be found on Council’s website.

Patea Old Folks Association Presidents Annual Report, 2022 I wish to present my annual report on the activities of the Patea Old Folks Association for 2022. The committee members for the 2021-2022 year were as follows : President: Robin Ansley Vice - President: Robert Northcott Secretary: Rose Cowley Treasurer: Barb Martin Committee: Karen Phillips Ann Ansley Laurie Mildenhall Tom Matiaha Jacq Dwyer Mareta Masters - Grubner Mollie Oliver Sadly we lost one of our committee members this year when she lost her battle with cancer. We extend our sympathy to the family and friends of Mareta Masters–Grubner. May she rest in peace. Cogs grant: We continue to receive an annual grant from cogs and this year will be the final payment of the current 3 year plan. Our thanks again to Marie Dwyer for completing the application process on our behalf and we look forward to Marie and Jacq’s continuing support with this process. Thank you Marie and Jacq. Without this cogs grant we would not be able to continue operating and maintaining the hall or our association. Finance: We have transitioned well with the change from a cheque book to online banking and i am happy to report that we have completed the process of opening an account at the TSB bank and have transferred the funds from our Westpac savings account to this TSB account. One of the primary reasons for this was to enable us to apply for funding in the future to help with major expenses. The biggest expense we have coming up is to replace the roof of the hall which is in constant need of repair and patching to prevent it leaking. Quotes for this have come in at in excess of $26,000. This quote is probably now out of date and subject to an inflationary increase. Unfortunately, due to new anti-laundering laws the TSB bank and all other major funding organisations will not at this stage consider any applications from us as due to a historical problem we do not hold the title to the hall and land that the hall sits on. This is because since the land was purchased in the 1960's the title has been in the name of the chairman of the trust that raised the money to buy the land. We are now in the process of sorting this out legally, however the process is lengthy and expensive. We have engaged a lawyer who specialises in this type of problem and our application has now been filed with the high court. By the time this process has been finalised we will have depleted most of our reserve funds, so needless to say we will not have the funds for any unforeseen problems or to re-roof our hall. However once sorted and we can produce legal title to the land and hall we will be able to file applications to funding bodies such as TSB bank and the lotteries commission for funding for such projects. That is not to say the funds will be granted but at least we will no longer be excluded from making application for them. I would strongly urge anyone in a similar position with legal title to property to sort it out now rather than later as it does become very messy. Maintenance: During the past year Laurie Mildenhall and myself have managed to repaint all of the internal walls of the hall. The trim is yet to be done and the exterior of the hall is to be repainted as well. We do have the paint to repaint the exterior walls. Thank you: Thanks to Laurie your help, organisation and leadership with the repainting. Thanks to Tom for another year of mowing our lawns. Thanks to Karen and Jacq for maintaining our gardens. Thanks to Ann for the supper at our monthly meetings. Thanks to Rose for your continuing efforts as our secretary and hall booking contact. Thanks to Barb for your efforts as our treasurer. Thanks to Shirley Maher for auditing our books for another financial year. Thanks to our entire committee for your continuing support and efforts during a challenging year. Yes, We have had a challenging year. Hall booking are down, probably due to Covid more than anything else. The biggest challenge to this committe, has been to sort out the legal mess with the title. I think we are now well on the way to resolving this historical issue and hopefully within the next 6 months it will be completely resolved. On behalf of the committee, i would like to thank Jacq for all of her efforts in co-ordinating this with us and our lawyer. A massive effort finally looking like being resolved. I would also like to publicly thank Carley Dwyer for her efforts with this, Carley completed a lot of research on this problem on our behalf and has not charged us anything for her time. Carley’s efforts have enabled us, on her recommendation to hand over to a specialist lawyer and has saved us considerable expense on research. Thank you Carley. We may be almost broke but we are certainly not down and out, and we have made huge headway on a major problem. Membership: We have very loyal members who continue to support us with membership fees and i thank all our members for this continuing support. As is the case with a lot of other organisations, both local and nationwide, we need more members, both for their fees but more importantly for new blood, new ideas. If you or anyone you know would like to suggest new ideas for our organisation, come along to our monthly meetings on the last Thursday of every month at 4.30pm. And for a mere $20 per annum, per person, you too can become a member of the Patea Old Folks Association. Thank you, Robin Ansley, President, Patea Old Folks Association

Waverley Primary School Principal’s message: It has been an amazing Term at Waverley Primary School, full of learning opportunities both inside and outside of the classroom. Trips to Bushy Park, looking at local eco-systems, Rugby Tournaments, and our work with the Kiwi trust have been some of my highlights. We have had an amazing time at school this term amidst all of the chaos from COVID and the dreaded flu. The students have made some impressive gains academically and we are really looking forward to sharing these with their Whanau in the Student Led Conferences in week 2 of next term. Board of Trustee elections are happening soon. We have an amazing Board of Trustees here at Waverley Primary School. Our Presiding Member Karley Amon who is well supported by the other board members, Cam Bradnock, Chris Koubaridis, Georgie Lupton and Dianne Sanson our staff rep. I would like to thank our board members for all for their service to the school and the community. I am sure that there are many people in the community who are interested in standing on the school board and I look forward to seeing who has been nominated to stand for the elections in September. Thank you also to Irene Reece who is our Returns Officer. I hope you all manage to have a wonderful term break and I look forward to seeing the children on Monday 25th July for the first day of Tem 3 2022. Many thanks, Tim Marriott Principal Bushy Park Trips Over two fantastic days, our whole school went to visit the wonder that is Bushy Park Tarapuruhi Forest Sanctuary. It tied in beautifully with our Inquiry focus this term, Our Land: To Matou Whenua. The tamariki were amazed at the abundance of wildlife and the lush forest (thanks to it being a predator free area). Would you believe it is home to the tallest Rata tree in the whole world? We learnt so much from the volunteer educators and they were impressed with the quality of the questions our students asked. If you haven’t been there for a visit, make sure you head out with a picnic one weekend soon!

August 2022 - 15 School Disco Our fabulous school Parents and Friends Association (PFA) organised and ran a fun filled fluoro disco for our students to enjoy. Great outfits, yummy food and awesome dance moves made for a super successful event. The students all went home with big smiles on their faces.

16 - August 2022 Duffy Role Model Assembly Thanks to our school education officer Constable Ben Broughton for coming to present our students with their two free Duffy books this term. Being able to choose and take home books they are interested in helps build literacy skills and a lifelong love of reading in our students. Thanks to the Lions Club for supporting this initiative in our school.

Matariki/Puanga We are so lucky to live in a small community with lots happening! We were invited to attend the Puanga learning sessions at the Waverley LibraryPlus which were hands-on and entertaining, while teaching learners about the importance of Puanga. Our seniors also headed down to the Community Centre last week for the Hauora Puanga celebrations and were treated to more games and lots of delicious kai.

organisations in Waverley on Thursday 30 June. There were 20+ organisations and they all benefitted from meeting up and sharing ideas. Constable Glenn also attended, Mayor Phil and many other locals. Joanne complimented Bill Campbell on his community garden behind the Council Flats in Waverley that he has been running for several years. End of Open Forum. There were no local discretionary funding applications this time. There was a detailed report from Ella Borrows regarding the Pātea Freezing Works Gate restoration for the 40th anniversary of the closure of The Works on 3 September this year. There will also be a information sign of the history. Money for this project has been requested from the Pātea Property Reserve fund and will be confirmed at the next Council meeting. Items for action: The shelter at Aotea Park at Waverley is still pending, it is hoped it will be finished and ready for summer. Community Development Report from Ella Borrows was full of activities and events that are happening in our district. ‘Puanga’ Art exhibition opened at Pātea Art gallery on 22 June. Art from students and staff at St Joseph’s school Pātea, as well as other local artists on show. Town Revitalisation plans for Waverley are being processed and plans to roll-out it out are being worked through by the appointed ‘co-design’ committee. The Ben Hurley comedy show in Hawera and Eltham have been a sell out. Elektra family night out has been booked in for Friday 30 September at King Edward Park, Hawera. The July School holiday programme run by the Council have been well received and will provide many events for children to be involved in. Pātea will have events for the first time this year. LibraryPlus Report from Cath Shead reported on the continued work the Libraries are doing to provide information and entertainment during the winter months, in spite of the constant issues of covid and flu. Some of the Librarians have made Tik Tok video clips for the teenage audience, mostly about books and what can be found at the library. These are being well received by the Tik Tok world. Cooking demonstrations for favourite kiwi recipes are also being posted by Hawera Librarians for the South Taranaki LibraryPlus Facebook page. Kakaramea School’s coding class attended a ‘Bee Bots’ Robot session at Pātea LibraryPlus recently. A Nintendo Switch has been purchased for Waverley LibraryPlus. Environmental Services Report from Liam. 95 consents have been issued in May, 10 of these in Pātea and Waverley Faculties Usage report showed that the number of people using the connector Bus has been down, due to Covid. Bus tickets are still half price, so it is hoping people will soon feel confident in using public transport more often. Full minutes of this and all Council meetings can be found on the South Taranaki District Council Website, under the heading ‘Our Council’ then go to ‘Mayor & Elected members’ then ‘Community Board - Pātea’ or view them at Pātea or Waverley LibraryPlus Your Community Board Members are: Jacq Dwyer (Chair) Dianne Lance (Deputy Chair), Jo Peacock, Maria Ferris, Robert Northcott (Pātea Councillor) The meeting times & venues for this year are: Wednesday 17 August, 4pm, Waitōtara Hall, 12 Kaipo Street, Waitōtara Wednesday 9 November, 4pm, Hunter Shaw Building, Pātea

Pātea Community Board Meeting

Notes from the meeting on Wednesday 6 July 2022. 4pm, provided by the Board Members. The fifth meeting for the year was held at the Hunter Shaw Building, Pātea Present were: Pātea Community Board members; Jacq, Dianne, Jo, Rob Northcott (Pātea Ward Councillor), Sara Dymond (PA), Phil Nixon (Mayor). Meeting opened with a karakia from Jo. Open Forum: Waverley Community Patrol report from Doug Rosewarne. Doug gave us the statistics from last year – they have done 750 patrol hours, plus 300 hours of training, 9000km in the patrol car, attended 96 incidents. At present they have 15 volunteer staff that always patrol in pairs. Constable Glenn Osbourne has a permanent position in Waverley and continues to keep a close watch over the town, with support from Whanganui Police when needed. Doug reported that the response from the Council dog control officer has been disappointing on numerous occasions. Calls the patrol have logged with the Council in regards to roaming dogs or dog attacks have remained unanswered up to 1 ½ hours later, with no dog control officer coming to sort out the issue. Dogs have been walking into people’s back yards and attacking the animals that live there – dogs, sheep, chooks etc, often killing them. Maria asked for a response from the Council about what is happening with the troughs on the road in Waverley. Several of them have been hit by vehicles and some of the empty troughs have filled with rain water and are dangerous for wandering children. Mayor Phil replied that they will be removed and a raised pedestrian crossing will be installed, but he wasn’t sure about exactly when this will happen. Maria also wanted an update on the priorities of the committee that are working through the time-plan for the Waverley Town Master plan. A long term concept for how the town will look, and a step by step plan of what order it will be done in is required to ensure the finished result is a success. Dianne reported that the theme of ‘rural rustic’ has been decided on, several heritage colours have been chosen and a ‘native flora’ motif will be designed to go on signage and way-finding etc. Phil pointed out that it is important to continue to get the projects for Waverley, ie town belt restoration and walkway, in the next Long Term Plan so that more money can be secured for the future. Mayor Phil wanted to remind all that the Council Community Initiatives Fund 2022 round is open between 1 July and 31 July. There is $170,000 available for community projects. Dianne gave us an update on the outcome of the quiz and auction for Kiwi the Racehorse statue on Friday 1 July. There were 21 teams and almost $10,000 was raised on the night. She wanted to make special mention and thanks to all that helped to make it such a success, Nickie Andrews wrote and ran the quiz, Frankie Stevens was the MC, and Chris Haywood was the auctioneer. Border Rugby Club ran the bar and gave a generous donation to the fund. Dianne also wanted to thank Leanne Morrison for organising the Meetup for local clubs and
