Waverley Primary School turns 150 next year ‘Inspiring today’s learners to thrive in tomorrow’s world.’ Waverley Primary School was set up in 1873 for 5 to 15-year-olds “without fee or payment.” Ironically, some over 15 year olds tried to join up to get the formal education they hadn’t had. That didn’t work out so well as some were described in ‘Waverley School’s First Century’ by Robert Bremer as “fairly unruly.” The first few years were tough – on students and staff, although numbers by the end of 1874 were a credible 27 boys and 21 girls. Classes were held in the old Town Hall with one teaching principal, until a classroom was built in 1875. As the classroom was bigger than the Town Hall, it was used for some of its functions as well. Absenteeism was high, especially for girls as “education for girls was still regarded as a bit of luxury in those days,” (Bremer). The boys and/or their parents had plenty of excuses as well – help on the farm, attend the race meetings or getting involved in cattle sales. But by 1876 a second teacher was appointed and by 1878 the roll had reached 92 and by 1880, 165. Fortunately, a second classroom was built in 1878, with two more classrooms built in 1885. Attendance improved and in 1896 the school was able to boast a record monthly average of 211.5 out of 225. (How did they get the extra .5?). While the roll declined at the beginning of the 20th century, thanks to several new schools being opened in the district, Waverley Primary benefitted from having James Banks as principal from 1904 to 1922. Apart from being the longest serving principal, providing stability, he also introduced the latest teaching aids – magic lantern pictures. During his time, he collected 4670 slides for school use. Secondary school classes started and in 1940, the school became a district high School albeit with low numbers and a small range of subjects in the secondary section. Some former pupils such as Margaret, Chris and Meryl attended school at varying times between the 1940s to the 1960s and spoke to the RCP about when there was the Anglican Church on a corner of the playing fields. (The school was able to use it for a class when necessary). It was replaced by a church across the main road. A hall was transported onto the school grounds to be the school hall. Meryl remembers when students came to school on their horses. There is a wooden hitching rail still in town next to the Town Clock. In the middle of the playing ground there was a huge tree and a wooden fort – but both have since gone. A big event in its history was the fire of 19 December 1955, which burnt down most of the classrooms. Students had to be taught in the Sunday Schools belonging to the Presbyterian and Anglican churches until replacement classrooms were built. The role had reached its peak of 500 by 1969, and demand had been growing for a separate secondary school for years 7 to 13. This was achieved in 1970 but was eventually closed in 2007.

concluding with the cutting of a cake and decade photographs. In the evening there will be a dinner and dance in a marque at the Community Centre. Sunday: Possible Church service. Check the Waverley Primary School website for progress and use the registration form in this copy of the RCP to register. - courtesy of River City Press, Whanganui

Pātea Old Folks Hall

The AGM for the Pātea Old Folks Association is on Thursday 30 June at 4.30pm. The current Pātea Old Folks committee have been running the Hall for two years, and in that time we have had a lot of fun and kept the lovely old 1968-built Hall going for the community to use. We aren’t the usual Old Folks that one may expect from an Old Folks Assocaition, but between us we have a lot of knowledge and a dedication to keep this facility maintained and available. As always we are on the look out for new committee members, so do let us know if you have time once a month for a meeting, it’s the last Thursday of the month, meeting from 4.30 – 5.30pm at the Old Folks Hall. Or if you just want to help us out by becoming a member for $20 per year. This doesn’t tie you to any commitment, instead it is like a donation and will allow us to do general maintenance and upkeep of the Hall and keep it in the good condition that it has been left to us by the previous committee. Contact any of the committee members to pay your subscription, or Jacq on 027 241 5595 for the bank account number. Recently committee members: Laurie and Robin painted the interior walls of the Hall in Resene ‘Spanish White’. It looks so fresh and vibrant, with the original wallpaper mural retained and looking better than ever. Tom Matiaha mows the lawns and Karen, Anne and Jacq do the gardens. We want to acknowledge the passing of our dear committee member Mareta Marsters-Grubner. Mareta also ran an art group at the Old Folks Hall once a week, which provided a lot of enjoyment for those who attended. A Memorial Service was held for Mareta at the Old Folks Hall on Saturday 21 May, attended by many friends and her 3 sons. Rest in Peace Mareta. The Committee members are: Robin Ansley (Chairman), Rose Cowley (Secretary), Barbara Martin (Treasurer), Laurie Mildenhall, Karen Phillips, Tom Matiaha, Robert Northcott, Anne Ansley, Mollie Oliver, Jacq Dwyer. We would appreciate support of the community to continue The Old Folks Hall hireage prices have recently been reviewed to help encourage people to use the Hall more. All enquires and bookings to Rose Cowley 027 2372042. Please join us for the AGM for the Pātea Old Folks on Thursday 30 June at 4.30pm, all welcome.

Waverley Primary School today The current roll of the school is over 100 and there has been significant growth in the last few years, reflecting the increasing number of people coming to live in the town. Since the current principal, Tim Marriott came in 2020, the number of teachers has increased from 4 to 5 and they are close to having a 6th teacher. In recent years the library has been reinstated and “is an inviting learning space,” says Tim. The old Junior school block has been re-roofed and has had aluminium windows installed. The Senior block is being re-roofed, two classrooms will be converted into a modern learning environment and “as part of the Rural Schools Programme, sound, LED lighting and insulation are being installed,” adds Tim. 2023 Celebrations Planning is well underway for the 2023 celebrations of the 150 years of Waverley Primary School. A Golf Ball Drop fundraiser was held recently and raised over $4000 to help with the event. The provisional programme is as follows: Friday 10 March: Registration from 2 to 4pm in a currently empty classroom especially recreated to represent a classroom from the early days of the school. This will be followed by a wine and cheese evening function from 5pm to 9pm. Saturday 11 March: The plan is to have a street parade with floats representing not just the school but also the community. It could be accompanied by a pipe band, a market day and

A Christian Word

Call

M:

Nick Smith

Psalm 91 You that live in the shelter of the most High and lodge under the shadow of the Almighty, who say “The Lord is safe retreat, my God the fastness in which I trust; He Himself will snatch you away from the fowlers snare or raging tempest. He will cover you with His pinions, and you shall find safety beneath His wings; You shall not fear the hunters trap by night or the arrow that flies by day, the pestilence that stalks in darkness or the plague raging at noonday. A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand close at hand, but it shall not touch: His truth will be your shield and your rampart. With your own eyes you shall see all of this; you shall watch the punishment of the wicked. For you, the Lord is a safe retreat; you have made the most High your refuge. No disaster shall befall you, no calamity shall come upon your home. For He has charged His Angels to guard you wherever you go, to lift you on their hands for fear you should strike your foot against a stone. You shall step on asp and cobra, you shall step safely on snake and serpent. Because his love is on me, I will deliver him; I will lift him beyond danger, for he knows Me by name. When he calls on me I will answer; I will be with him in times of trouble; I will rescue him and bring him honour. I will satisfy him with long life to enjoy the fullness of my salvation. What an assurance policy this is! Please note: all the above promises can be yours once you realize that God is calling you daily to come into that place of repentance, believing the gospel message and then trusting God to do what He has promised to all those who have repented, believed and trusted God’s promises through Jesus Christ. This decision is a stand-alone decision. By this I mean you and you alone are responsible for every decision you make. There are circumstances that can be caused by the proverbial spanner being tossed in the works, but the promises of God have no “spanners” at all, just yes through Jesus Christ. Your yes is your salvation which is life Eternal with almighty God – nothing can interfere with God’s promises and neither can anything destroy them! Simply, you either believe and are saved, or you will be eternally separated from God and that surely has to be the worst-case scenario and so sad, so unnecessary. Come Lord Jesus Ted Reeves, Patea

Waverley Croquet As winter is fast approaching we are coming to the end of our season. There was only one day during the month where it was not good, but a few hardy souls braved it. During May there were 18 Hole in Ones and 13 Jump Shots achieved, another good effort. Our closing day was on Saturday 28th, a stunning day, picture perfect, which made the Croquet very enjoyable. There was a good turnout of players. After play we were treated to a lovely afternoon tea followed by Prize Giving. The results for the season were: Doff Lupton Cup Helen Fairweather Club Doubles Sally Newland and Jacqui Boon Handicap Singles Alan Macdonald RSA Handicap Doubles Cheryl Rapson and Colleen Hayman Novice Trophy Jacqui Davidson Most Jumpshots through the season with an impressive 25 was Alan Macdonald. Waverley Primary School Principal’s message: Term 2 has started off with a hiss and a roar as there have been plenty of things going on at Waverley Primary School in the first three weeks of the term. While COVID is still raging through the community and the school we are working hard to ensure that student attendance is a lot better this term as we focus on student engagement and achievement this term The staff and students are really looking forward to some events scheduled in the near future. We have the Under 11 Tackle Rugby Tournament in Whanganui on Tuesday 24th May and the National Young Leaders Day in Palmerston North on Wednesday 25th May. Two events that we have been looking forward to for a very long time. Students at Waverley Primary School continue to thrive and our school in particular our learning environments have received a bit of a make-over this month. Thanks to the Rural Schools Initiative, Torque IP and Chris Dunn Technologies we have new LED Lighting, Acoustic Panelling, Ceiling Insulation and RCD Switches throughout the school. This upgrade has made a big difference to our classroom environments and the comments from the children about the difference this upgrade has made have been very positive. We are really looking forward to our next project which is the refurbishment of two of our senior classrooms. We would like to welcome our new students who have joined us after the term break and also welcome those who will be joining us on the 1st of June. The growth we are seeing in the school is really positive. A quick shout out to promote our Flying Start Programme for 4-5 year old children. This is a great opportunity for your preschool children to have a look around Waverley Primary, come and meet some of the children and staff and have a little taste of our programme. Flying Start visits happen from 2pm-3pm at Waverley Primary on Friday 20th May, 27th May, 10th June and 1st July. Please contact the school for Flying Start information. Having recently been isolating with COVID I want to wish everyone else who is at home isolating with this bug a speedy recovery. Have a great month. Tim Marriott, Principal

Our Term 2 Citizenship Inquiry is titled Our Land - To Matou Whenua. Our Junior hubs have been out and about in Waverley, visiting the town memorial clock and our local cemetery.

We were honoured to have many students attend the Waverley ANZAC Day service on April 25th. We also held our very own school service once school started back after the holidays. Our students laid wreaths, poppies and presented poems beautifully.

Our Senior students have been investigating local ecosystems at school and around Waverley. At school they loved going on an ecosystem scavenger hunt!

Kakaramea School ‘Together We Achieve’ We have seen many property projects finished over the school holidays and our school is looking super tidy. The Board has completed the two year project of upgrading the school car park area with the completion of the bus shelter retaining wall by Bayden Muller and his team at BM Building pictured below. In the storm on Monday 14th February we lost our school fence and with the superb workmanship of Mike Quarrie it was replaced over the April School holidays. The beginning of Term 2 has been a very busy one for us at Kakaramea School. We have had a number of initiatives start up such as 3B Gym Senior Student initiative, Esther from EnviroSchools Taranaki, Kapa Haka session have begun with Matau Lewis, our eLearning Leaders are back visiting Patea LibraryPlus and our senior students are in full swing with their cluster sports practices leading up to the Winter Tournament in late June. Plus many more! Here’s a few highlights: School Bus Shelter retaining wall Over the recent school holidays the final part of the three stage Board of Trustees Car park project is now complete with the final addition of a retaining wall around the school bus shelter.

Storm replacement fence Over the recent school holidays our school fence was replaced after it was damaged in the recent storm.

Our Manuka Room students are enjoying learning how to make beeswax wraps with Esther from Enviroschools. Photos feature Sophie Muller setting her wrap, Alexander White creating his beeswax wrap by giving it a stir, Izayah Haira-Fenton and William McColl pleasured with the outcome of their wraps.

Anzac Day On April 25th in the Term 1 School Holidays our student leaders represented Kakaramea School at the Alton ANZAC Service. To acknowledge those who lost their lives, those who returned, those who were impacted by these events and those who have served our country over the years. Lest we forget.

Our Student Leaders laying the wreath at the Alton Memorial.

Enviroschools Taranaki We have been extremely fortunate to have secured Esther from the Taranaki EnviroSchools to support with our school wide inquiry ‘The Gifts of Papatūānuku’. She will be coming in weekly to support us as we embark on our school wide EnviroSchools journey. In her early session the students made beeswax wraps. The smiles say it all!

Mamma Mia is coming

It’s not long until June 11th when Hawera Repertory’s Mamma Mia opens. This show is building up to be one of Hawera Repertory’s best. With a reputation for producing top quality shows for over 75 years, and known for investing in the best of sound, lighting and set elements required for high end musical theatre, the society attracts a high calibre of auditionees for their shows. Mamma Mia has once again has proven this allure; The stars have certainly aligned with the Mamma Mia cast. Musical director Charles Pittams is extremely pleased with how the entire cast has grasped the music and has said “it’s not easy music to learn and has many layers and parts”. The leads in this show are a mixture of both newer and experienced players. Playing Donna is Paula Frearson from Manaia. Paula has performed in one previous Hawera Repertory show, Through the Decades, but is no stranger to the stage, having sung for both her Church and Kapa Haka. Paula is a singer that captivates other singers and audiences alike. Supporting Paula as Donnas best friends and completing the girl power trio ‘The Dynamos’ are Emily Davidson and Deb Thomas. Emily, playing the role of Tanya, has been in both musicals and plays for Hawera Repertory. Emily recently sang as Grace in Annie, and was also in the recent play Love Begins at 50. Deb Thomas, playing the role of Rosie, has been in many musicals and has played the lead Audrey in Little Shop of Horrors and more recently played Lilly St Regis in Annie. These three ladies have a blend of voices and chemistry that will be worth the ticket price alone. Playing Sophie is Sarah Bird. This is Sarah’s first major musical, but she has shown great ability in rehearsal and will partner well with Regan Tate who is playing Sky. Regan is from New Plymouth and has appeared in The Full Monty and The Rocky horror Picture Show in New Plymouth. Of course, Mamma Mia needs three fathers and playing the prospective dads are Richard Baylis who plays Bill. Richard was most recently Mr Warbucks in Annie for Hawera Repertory. Joining him in the cast is his brother Hayden Baylis, who is Sam. Whilst you may not have seen Hayden on stage in a major role, you may have heard him as he was the voice of Aslan the lion in The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe. Rounding out the dads is very well-known local musician and music teacher Shaun Campbell, playing the role of Harry. Shaun has been in musicals, such as Le Miserables in New Plymouth (twice!) and also Hawera Repertory’s Oliver as Fagan. Shaun has also directed major musicals, Little Shop of Horrors and Annie for Hawera Repertory. Playing the friends of Sophie are Samantha Hatcher as Lisa and Tayla Steele as Ali and supporting Sky are Cody Ogle as Pepper and Aries Poutu as Eddie. Look out for these four newcomers as they bring their youthful vitality to the stage. No musical is possible without an ensemble, and the group for this show is incredibly strong. They have been put through their paces by the show’s choreographer Greer Anderson, who is from New Plymouth. Greer has challenged the ensemble and leads, and they have met the challenge. The ensemble has some experienced rock steady members and some future rock stars amongst it. So, what can you expect from Director Clive Cullen’s Mamma Mia? Well for a night at the theatre you will get it all - an often-poignant story with some great twists and plenty of laughs. You will also get more than twenty foot tapping Abba songs sure to bring a smile to your face. You will know more songs in this musical than any other and will find it difficult to not sing along with the cast as you are drawn into the experience of Mamma Mia. Mamma Mia will be performed in the Hawera Memorial Theatre, which is a full-scale theatre, yet every seat is close enough to see it all unfold before your very eyes. Tickets can be found online at i-ticket and also from the Hawera i-Site. The show runs from 11 – 25 June. Having seen and heard some snippets from the show in rehearsal, the best advice I can give you is: don’t miss it! Ben Thomas

Standing: Hayden Baylis, Richard Baylis, Deb Thomas, Shaun Campbell, Emily Davidson, Cody Ogle, Regan Tate, Aries Poutu. Sitting: Paula Frearson, Sarah Bird. Absent: Samantha Hatcher, Tayla Steele.

Pātea Community Board Meeting Notes from the meeting on Wednesday 25 May 2022. 4pm, provided by the Board Members. The fourth meeting for the year was held at the Waverley Community Centre. Present were: Pātea Community Board members; Jacq, Dianne, Jo, Rob Northcott (Pātea Ward Councillor), Janine Maruera (Community Development Officer), Sara Dymond (PA), Liam Dagg (Group Manager Environmental Services). Phil Nixon (Mayor). Apologies: Maria Ferris. Meeting opened with a karakia from Janine. It was also acknowledged that it is Janine’s last meeting with us, as she has accepted a new job with Ngāruahine. Open Forum: -Jacq spoke of the fact that there will be no calf Slink Skins collection in the South Taranaki region this year. The main reason being that due to covid there is a world wide stockpile of calf skins, as less luxury items have been made with them in the last two years. Two issues arise from this: disposal of dead calves on farm, and less funds available to community organisations. Jacq also reported on the progress of Taranaki Catchment Community groups, in particular the Pātea River Catchment, which was formed 18 months ago. It is going from strength to strength, focusing on pest control and native tree planting at the moment. A future project is a feasibility study for a cycle/walking trail from Alton to the back country of Hurleyille. Government funding is available for projects like this, so the Catchment committee are pursuing possibilities. Victoria Brown from the Hurleyville Hall Society spoke to her application for funding from the Discretionary fund for a new disability access ramp for the back door at the Hall. The Board allocated $2310.29 to this project. It is the last round for the Local Discretionary Fund for the financial year. Jacq suggested they apply to the McBroom estate and Phil suggested they contact Wheelhouse funding as well. Waverley Community Patrol report from Doug Rosewarne. Doug said since Constable Glen Osbourne has been patrolling the district the crime rate has dropped considerably. Some teenagers smashed windows in the Old Mill recently and Constable Osbourne saw to it that they we found and have since cleaned up the mess they made there. There is still the same people doing wheelies in Dallison Park, they seem to know when the Patrol members are out of the area, and go rip up the turf then. The Community Patrol have a small room now allocated to them at the Waverley Police Station, to use when they are on Patrol, they still rent a room at Abbottsford to store more gear, and for larger meetings. They currently have 13 members on the Patrol roster. Rob noted the success of the town having its own policeman, rather than the situation in recent years when the nearest policeman was in Whanganui. Phil was also grateful of the service of Glen and would like to meet with him at some stage. Glen was hoping to attend this meeting but was away. Susan Thomas spoke about her despair at the state of Waverley water. The smell and effects of chlorine is unbearable at times. She pointed out that the tradesmen that are often sent to try and rectify the issue, try really hard to sort out the problems, but still it remains. She has tried to contact Council staff about it, but is yet speak to someone that can advise on a solution. Phil understood her frustration and said it is something that they are trying to resolve. One problem with Waverley water pipes is that there are a lot of dead ends, rather than loops, so it is hard to flush out the lines. And the chlorine that the Council is instructed to use since the ‘Havelock North incident’ is something they are unable to avoid now. End of Open Forum Items for action: Janine reported on two projects currently on the go in the area. The Freezing Works Memorial for the 40 year anniversary on 3 September 2022. The proposal is the reinstate the ‘Pātea Freezing Works’ steel sign on the original old gates, install an information sign near to it, and place a memorial rock by it. A memorial for The Works was requested by Hemi Ngarewa on behalf of all the people that had worked there over the years. Funds from the Pātea Property Trust will hopefully be accessed for this project. The shelter at Aotea Park, Waverley is still pending. There have been various hold ups with it. But Councillor Brian Rook, now Chairman of Waverley Lions, has the project in hand. Community Development Report from Ella Burrows. Community feedback from the online survey on the STDC website about the town master plan for Waverley has now closed, some good feedback was received. The Waverley Pool mural competition has closed and 3 finalists were chosen. Community voting is open from 27 May – 8 June at the Waverley Library. Handicap Pennants The postponed semifinal of the men’s handicap pennants was played at Te Ngutu on Sunday 8th May. After 18 holes Patea and Waitara were all square scoring 4.5 wins each. A play off was required so the number one players headed off to the first tee again. A great drive by Waitara player had him finish only 30 metres from the green and both players were on for two shots. Darcy narrowly missed his birdie putt but the Waitara player sunk his birdie putt from 12 meters the first birdie he had all day and unfortunately Patea was eliminated. Waitara went on to win the final 6 games to 3. The Patea players represented our club really well and hopefully we can make the final next year. Club Matchplay Championships The Matchplay championships have been played late April and during May. The finals are being played this weekend. Darcy and Cyril Faiers play off the men’s senior title. Kath Honeyfield and Barbara Hill play off for the ladies senior title. Steve Honeyfield and Sono Rio play off for the men’s intermediate title and Fabian McLeod and Peter Te Ngahue play off for the men’s Junior title and the limit player finalists are Richie Muraahi and Wilson Rerekura. The ladies bronze two finalists are Win Finlay and Carolyn Davidson. Waitotara School - Achieving Together Kia Ora Koutou, Welcome back to Term 2 at Waitotara School. It was lovely to return to smiling, well rested students who were bursting to tell staff about their adventures during their holidays. It’s good to get back into routine with learning and great to see so many children involved in external music lessons and winter sport. Our whole school term topic is “The Night Sky”, where we will be learning about the sun, moon, planets, Matariki and more. We have an exciting trip planned to Te Manawa Museum in Palmerston North at the end of the term to celebrate and consolidate our learning. We are lucky enough to have table tennis lessons at the Waitotara Hall with Dave Welch this term. Both classes will be attending on a Tuesday afternoon for the next six weeks. Our new winter menu for lunches has started, and what a hit it’s been! We look forward to another term focussing on our school DRIVE valuesDetermination, Respect, Initiative, Virtue and Empathy. Monday Momentum continues with both classes working together as tuakana-teina. Our School Board elections are coming up in September. If you would like to know more about becoming a Board member, please chat to Kirsty Parsons or Polly Devane. If you would like to come to our next Board meeting, we’d love to see you. Have a great term, Polly Devane - Principal

Waverley Playcentre

We have been enjoying the beautiful Autumn weather at Playcentre. Exploring and challenging themselves on the playground, building giant rivers and volcanoes in the sand pit and water play are a few favourite activities that our tamariki have been loving recently. We are fortunate to have a big area indoors for the cooler days too. Playcentre caters to families with children aged 0-6 with a focus on child-led play. This means each session our children enjoy a variety of different learning and play experiences and it is a great opportunity to meet other parents. Every Playcentre offers three free visits, so come along for a visit and see what we are all about! We would love to meet you and your whànau. A big thank you to the TOI Foundation for the grant we recently received and a special farewall to Isla who is off to school. Waverley Playcentre is located at 28 Gloag Street Waverley and we are open 9am-12 on Wednesday and Friday mornings. You can also look us up on Facebook.

Whenuakura School ‘Growing Personal Excellence’ It is important for us to provide our learners with the opportunity to grow their leadership and once again this year, we attended National Young Leaders Day (NYLD) in Palmerston North. We were motivated and inspired by speakers Georgia Lines (Singer/Songwriter), Georgia Latu (CEO, Pōtiki Poi), Sam Johnson (CEO, Student Volunteer Army) and Riley Hathaway (Founder, Young Ocean Explorers). This year the theme was ‘Resilience’ with all the speakers sharing their own experiences. “A key message for us was that a little idea can make a big difference” commented Comien and Millie. “One comment that stuck with me was be nice to those that are mean to you because you just don’t know what’s going on for them” said Aidan. “Georgia Lines was a fantastic performer and we really enjoyed it,” said Thomas and Pippa. “The work that Riley does with Young Ocean Explorers is amazing” commented Jack.

Community-Minded - Pink Shirt Day Pink shirt day is about promoting the message that it is cool to be kind and kindness fits all. We learnt about being an upstander and what we can do if we witness bullying. We know that no matter who you are or what you do, we all have a role to play in ending bullying and spreading just a little more kindness. Kōrero Mai, Kōrero Atu, Mauri Tū, Mauri Ora. Speak up, stand together, stop bullying.

Engaging and Exciting Curriculum - Connect Crews Connect Crews have begun! This is a highlight of the week for students as they get to engage in exciting, hands-on learning opportunities that incorporate science, technology, the arts, and mathematics. Learners have joined crews such as: Crafty Critters, Cake Decorating, Coding & Robotics, Kitchen Science and Bush Craft. The Coding and Robotics crew have been learning how to programme Edison robots using Edscratch. Crafty Critters have been making a variety of fabric items. Experiments with catapults and flowers have kept the Kitchen Science crew busy. The Bush Craft crew have been using their survival skills to build bivouacs. Special thanks to Dean and Jess for volunteering their time to help out.

Original NZ Art for Sale

A service was held at the Star Garage premises recently to unveil a memorial plaque for James (Jim) Baird. It was a lovely autumn day, so friends and family gathered outside to share memories and swap stories. After the service people enjoyed hangi for lunch, and the chance to catch up with each other. Jim's dog, Teddy, made a guest appearance, much to people's delight.
