Wreck of the Waitangi exposed at Patea Beach Growing up with Ian Church as my teacher, I knew about the Waitangi and how she became shipwrecked. She was usually completely covered by the sand, so held little interest for me. None of my age group, who ran past her as part of their PE lessons, would have ever believed she would become completely exposed, just waiting for the locals to photograph her. SL Robinson

A Christian Word 1 John 4:7-17 says: “Dear friends, let us love one another, because love is from God. Everyone who loves is a child of God and knows God, but the unloving know nothing of God. For God is love, and His love was disclosed to us in this, that He sent His only Son into the world to bring us life. The love I speak of is not our love for God, but the love He showed to us in sending His Son as the remedy for the defilement of our sins. If God thus loved us, dear friends, we in turn are bound to love one another. Though God has never been seen by any man, God Himself dwells in us if we love one another; His love is brought to perfection within us. He has imparted His spirit to us. Moreover, we have seen for ourselves, and we attest, that the Father has sent His Son to be the Saviour of the world, and if a man acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwells in him and he dwells in God. Thus, we have come to know and believe the love which God has for us. This is for us the perfection of love, to have confidence on the day of judgement, and this we can have, because even in this world we are as He is.” As a point of interest, this disciple was with Jesus from the beginning here on earth, the only apostle not to be killed because of his faith in Jesus. Love! What a powerful word, here John shows us just how powerful love can be, especially as it is God Himself that proves it to us. Who could possibly allow His Son to be crucified and on purpose – Love! God loves His creation, you and me, no strings attached or conditions. Just a pure love that is God. We have a love that can be bought, exchanged, traded as a commodity, taken back whenever, it can cause pain, break hearts, ruin careers etc, but God’s love is pure. When we believe that Jesus, not only being God's begotten Son, died for us on a cross, our sins were paid in full by Him – that’s love, He rose from the grave 3 days later and is now seated beside all this love that saved Him and will save you also! We will begin to understand just how powerful and pure is the love of God, yours if you want it!! Ask. Come Lord Jesus Ted Reeves, Patea

Local News Bereavements

Sympathy is extended to the family and friends of Donald Francis (Don) Clark.

Letter to the Editor Star Garage - end of an erra

On 22 May 2022, a memorial service plaque for Jim Baird was unveiled outside the entrance to Star Garage Patea. It marked the close of my father's legacy with the building, the town and his enduring fight for the local people. Following his death in late 2019, COVID had kept our family overseas and travel restrictions meant not being able to enter the country, leaving his automobile museum collection in a state of stillness and his affairs a question on many lips. It was only in March this year was I able to arrive and start the solo challenge of repairing the criminal damage to the building and the clearing out of all the vehicles to progress his estate. I met a few people who saw this as an impossible task alone - many of these negative minded comments were from those outside of Patea and yet many locals supported me in the completion and contributed to getting it done. South Taranaki locals are a tough bunch and I have been fortunate to have met such loving and supportive people (there are too many to list for your publication) who made my three months bearable and achievable. I am grateful for those that showed up and helped me when I truly needed it. It was a homage to my late father but also to his legacy, belief and work. On the day of the memorial I stated to those in attendance that doing this was a way to give our father back to the community - his ashes were taken to Australia at his will and this was a homage to him still being 'home' and accessible to its people. For me it was a grander way of saying thank you to Patea for giving Dad a place to belong, issues to fight for and your love and kindness during a truly testing moment for myself. Patea, you will always be a special place where stubbornness rules and determination equates to victory - you truly are a gem. Kind regards and safe motoring, Charlie (Charlene Baird)

Patea Golf Club May & June Competitions Club Matchplay Championship finals The club Matchplay finals were played on Saturday 28th May 2022. The course was in good condition but the greens had not fully recovered from recent coring and weather conditions were very good. The Senior men’s finalists were Cyril Faiers and son Darcy Faiers. Darcy shot a 1 under par round of 72 in the morning round and Cyril was not at his best scoring a number of one over pars and at the lunch break Darcy was eight up. Cyril’s golf improved in the afternoon and was 3 over par for these holes but Darcy continued to play par golf and won the senior title the margin being 10/9. The Senior ladies finalists were Kath Honeyfield and Barbara Hill. Kath made a good start to be five up after nine holes and play was very even over the back nine holes so at the lunch break Kath had a six up lead. After lunch play was very even again and after nine holes Barbara had reduced Kath’s lead to five up but in the end Kath was to steady and won the senior title the margin being 7/6. The men’s intermediate finalists were Steve Honeyfield who had defeated some of our well performed pennant players and the improving Sono Rio. After nine holes the match was all square but then Sono played par golf for five holes to take a commanding five up lead. Steve managed to win the next two holes but lost the last two and Sono was five up at the lunch break. Play was very even after lunch but in the end Sono was to steady and won the intermediate title the winning margin being 6/5.

The best match of the day was the junior finals match between new club member Fabian McLeod and Peter Te Ngahue. Fabian was three up after nine holes But Peter fought back over the next nine holes and at the lunch break Fabian only had a one up lead. After lunch Fabian was able to increase his lead to three up again but Peter fought back again and the match finished on the final hole and Fabian won the Junior title the winning margin being 2up. The ladies bronze two finalists were Win Finlay and Carolyn Davidson and this was played over eighteen holes. Win played good golf over the first nine holes to have a five up lead and increased her lead in the back nine to win the bronze two final the winning margin being 7/5. The limit men’s finalists were Richie Muraahi and Wilson Rerekura and this match was also played over nine holes. It was a good battle over the first nine holes and Richie had a one up lead. Wilson improved in the back nine holes and proved to strong winning the limit title the winning margin being 3/1. Congratulations to all Championship winners, well done.

Tips for a Warmer Drier Home Improve insulation Effective home insulation reduces heat loss and prevents drafts. It can both save you money in the long term and create a healthier living space. Grants are available to eligible homeowners for insulation and heating through the Warmer Kiwi Homes programme. Some regional and local councils offer insulation deals, so it’s worth getting in touch to ask. If you’re a renter, Consumer NZ has put together a renter’s guide to a warmer home which is available on their website. Well-fitted curtains Installing well-fitted, double-layered curtains, preferably with thermal backings can make a real difference to heat loss. If the curtain is fitted close to the wall and extends beyond the edge of the window, it will be more effective in retaining warmth. If you have a glass-paned front door, consider installing a curtain over this during winter. Ventilation It is important to allow fresh air to circulate around your home during winter, as this will blow out respiratory triggers like dust, mould spores and moisture. Improving ventilation can be as simple as opening doors and windows for a 10 to 20-minute period each day. Moving beds and other furniture a hand’s width out from the wall, will allow air to circulate more freely and prevent the build-up of mould in these areas. Heating An effective heating system can make all the difference to your home. The Government’s GenLess website is a great source of information on different heating options, outlining their pros and cons. Be sure to avoid portable or unflued indoor gas heaters as they increase moisture and release dangerous toxins. Grants are available to cover the costs of heating through the Warmer Kiwi Homes programme and through some council supported providers. For those on a low income, the Ministry of Development’s Winter Energy Payment may be an option. More heating tips If you have a portable heater, placing it on the cold side of the room or near a window can help distribute heat around the room more effectively. For those with oil column heaters, tests by Consumer NZ found that placing a small fan on the floor, pointed at the heater, distributed heat around the room much more efficiently, than using this type of heater on its own. Keeping dry Dehumidifiers can be useful in creating a drier home, when used in small to medium-sized rooms with the windows closed. Other easy ways to reduce moisture include regularly wiping condensation from windows, keeping lids on pots while cooking and using extraction fans. Try to avoid drying clothes indoors if possible. Remove mould Regularly check for mould behind furniture and curtains and remove it immediately using warm, soapy water, bleach or white vinegar. Find the draughts On a windy day, spend some time identifying draughts in your home. One easy way to reduce draughts coming from under doors is by using a dry, rolled-up towel or a draught stopper. Waitotara School

We had a fun day at Waverley Library learning about Puanga. Thanks for having us Waverley LibraryPlus.

How exciting to see our turf just about installed and ready to go! The weather has hindered the install by a couple of weeks unfortunately but we’re nearly there. I have applied for a grant to get fencing installed and a community project will be announced in the Spring to encourage families and locals to use it after hours. Our Waitotara hockey team heads into Whanganui on Tuesday to compete against 15 other schools at Gonville. Go Waitotara! We are lucky to have Rawiri Welch, Waitotara Conservation working with us to learn about planting along the Waitotara River, trapping pests, the whitebait connection and even some taxidermy. We celebrate 3 special men this month also - Owen Savage, Don Parkes and Phil Thomson. I can’t thank them enough for the extras they do around the school. They’re often even here on weekends while we aren’t and can always be called on when I need a hand! We all really appreciate you.

Our School Board elections are coming up in September. If you would like to know more about becoming a Board member, please chat to Kirsty Parsons or myself. If you would like to come to our next Board meeting, we’d love to see you! Last call for this round of plaques - we look forward to adding to our “WaitotaraWall of Fame” Have a great week, Polly Devane, Principal

Patea Links are a bunkerless course with sheep grazed/mowed fairways and well maintained greens. Greymouth the missing sister club is a lush 18 hole course set on the Grey River Valley. The Par 72 course is generally flat with a few undulations in parts. Doglegs and strategically placed trees offer challenges on some holes. How it all began. A group of Patea Freezing Workers went over to Dannevirke to visit friends. At the same time some freezing workers from the Weedons club came up from the South Island. Four Way Interclub started with Patea, Dannevirke, Weedons and Greymouth. Greymouth pulled out and Rarangi joined in 1992. Barbara Hill tells me the story when she was a young women, of catching a bus in Patea and travelling to Wellington. From there the small group caught the ferry to Picton. Once arriving in Picton they caught the train to Christchurch. The Patea crew caught up with Weedons Country Club and travelled with Weedons on their bus to Greymouth to play golf with the missing sister club. For many years all clubs put on a skit. They were more important than the golf. I remember clearly Calendar Girl, Barbie Doll, Little Jimmy Brown. Over time only the Host Club did the skit. Then we also had fancy dress. Thank you to the Men who have worked on the course, mowed the fairways. Wayde Newbold for trimming all the hedges, 6 hours worth. Nick Williams for all the work removing the old tin shelter containers and replacing them with yellow drums, and also getting rid of dead trees. Alex Hurmond for painting all the marker pegs. Warren Sanson for mowing the greens. Barbara Hill for mowing the tee blocks, green surrounds and car park, not bad for a 72 year old. Steve Honeyfield for fixing the entrance way. Carolyn Davidson, Gareth Hughes, Verna Bourke and Kath Honeyfield for spring cleaning the Club House. Kath Honeyfield and Verna Bourke for decorating the Club House. The Ladies who did the baking for morning tea Kath Honeyfield for the gardens. Steve Honeyfield for organising the Bar with all the drinks and the other members who worked behind the bar.Alex Hurmond and Jeff Bright for washing the Club House. To the members who helped prepare the Hangi. Peter Te Ngahue and Mike Taikato for cooking the Hangi for Friday night. Te Aroha Mackintosh for the Four Way Interclub birthday cake. Ray Finlay for all the logistics to get the tournament here this weekend. The Raffle Committee Kathy Faiers, Barbara Hill, Carolyn Davidson. Gareth Hughes for entering all the cards. Finally to Debra, Mandy and Liz for the amazing food this weekend. Verna Bourke Patea Golf Club President

Pātea’s Bowling Pioneers Pātea was a forerunner in women’s bowling and was the site of the first women’s bowling tournament in New Zealand. Bowling was for many years a man’s game with women generally only allowed to serve tea and play in the occasional ‘ladies day’. Pātea did however, allow the occasional lady to bowl informally on their green with Pātea reported to have had some skillful lady players in 1902 or 1903. It is generally accepted that the first woman’s bowling team in New Zealand was formed in January 1906, in Wellington. The team was part of the Kelburn (then Kelburne) Bowling Club. They soon showed their mettle beating the Thorndon veterans’ men’s team. It was reported that the men ‘never smiled again’ that day! Pātea must have been a very close second, with women being admitted formally to the club on 29 September 1906. That month there was a women’s bowling competition held at the Pātea bowling green with trophies provided by John Gibson who had a large general goods store in town. It was jokingly reported that the ladies were so enamoured by their new sport that husbands ‘are pathetically admitting that the only alternative to starvation and misery is the hiring of a housekeeper’. In 1906, Miss Cameron and Mrs Thompson went as part of the men’s team to compete in Whanganui. It was reported that they, ‘played very well indeed.’ In January 1908, the Kelburn ladies’ team travelled to Pātea for the first-ever women’s bowling tournament. There was so much excitement in town over this ground-breaking match, that businesses closed their doors so they could attend. It was reported that the norm was upended; the men served tea while watching the women play. The event was even reported in newspapers all over New Zealand. A game was won by each team, but Kelburn won the third game and the tournament. The ‘jolly party’ then returned to Wellington thoroughly satisfied after having such a good time, which included being met at the station by the Mayor, entertained at the Central Hotel for dinner, taken to the theatre to see ‘A Trip to Chinatown’ and given a scenic trip up the Pātea River on Tait’s launch. In November 1908, the favour was returned with the Pātea ladies travelling to Kelburn and being equally entertained. The Pātea team must have been practicing hard as they won all three days of the tournament. Bronwyn Wattrus, Aotea Utanganui Museum Patea Bowling Green c. 1906 (Patea Bowling Club Collection)

Waverley Primary School Principal’s message: What an incredible month we have had at Waverley Primary School. It has been super busy both in the classrooms and also in the community. Our students have been involved in a number of sporting events and have represented our school with pride and passion. I would like to take the time to thank all of our volunteer coaches for their time and involvement in our sports teams. Without the help of our parent volunteers we wouldn't have been able to be involved in these tournaments. Congratulations to the children for their efforts. The school is preparing for a massive celebration when we turn 150 years old next year. There are a lot of events throughout the long weekend so please get your registrations in. For more information please contact the school. The staff and children are in the process of gathering data to write the end of term school reports. We have an excellent team of staff at Waverley Primary School and have noticed some impressive progress in a number of students this term. Like a lot of schools in the country we are still plagued with low attendance for a number of students. Remember that taking one day off a fortnight is equivalent to missing a month of school. If you require support to get your children to and from school please contact the office and make an appointment to speak to me. Waverley Primary School is taking enrolments now for 4 year old children to attend our Flying Start Programme. For enrolment information please contact the school office. We had a fabulous pyjama day here at Waverley Primary this week. We were fundraising for our Year 5 & 6 Camp. Have a great month. Tim Marriott, Principal We were lucky enough to be invited to the Targa Rally to fundraise for our up and coming camps. Thank you to Max Amon, Mason Kemp and Drake Holdworth for offering their own time to collect donations.

On Wednesday the 15th of June we entered three teams into the Rippa Rugby Tournament in Hawera. Students enjoyed competing against other South Taranaki Schools.

July 2022 - 15 A special thanks to the Lions Rotary Club for kindly donating Duffy Books for our students to enjoy.

Puanga Learning at the Waverley LibraryPlus Kauri, Matai, Tawa and Manuka Hubs learnt all about Puanga on their recent visits to the Waverley LibraryPlus this past week. Eileen and Taiaroa shared their knowledge in a fun, interactive way with our tamariki.

Whenuakura School ‘Growing Personal Excellence’

Mrs Marriott and Mrs Ferris have also recently attended a workshop by Literacy Facilitator Murray Gadd. They gained some brilliant ideas for our writing programme and have already begun using them in the classroom setting. We hope you all enjoy a well deserved break these July school holidays.

A warm welcome to Leo Adlam who joins us in Tuakana Hive and Kai Murphy who has begun school in Teina Nest. We are excited to be a part of your learning journey. We, as a school, have really enjoyed being able to get out and about during the second half of term with visits to our local library, museum and the annual Rippa Rugby Tournament. Puanga / Matariki We were very thankful to be invited to our local Library Plus Patea and Aotea Utanganui Museum to participate in hands-on activities that helped us understand more about Puanga and the Māori New Year.

The library staff do an amazing job with planning and facilitating these events. Our students thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Netsafe Webinar We are excited to be hosting a webinar event around internet safety on Monday 27th June, 6.30pm-7.30pm. This event will be facilitated by Netsafe’s Anjie Webster. It will provide a practical insight into keeping your child safe while using digital technology and navigating the online world. Rippa Rugby Congratulations to our Year 4-6 Rippa Team for competing in the annual Rippa Rugby Tournament in Hawera. The winter weather provided for tough playing conditions, however, a great day was still had by all. Special thanks to Paul and Matt for coaching, and thanks to all the parents that provided transport.

Waverley Baptist Church Foodbank

Staff Professional Development - Writing As staff we are always looking for ways to improve our teaching, to in turn improve the learning process and results for our students. We have been lucky enough to receive some in-class support from our Resource Teacher of Literacy (RTLiT) for South Taranaki, Tina Johnson. Tina has been providing inspiration around different writing activities that engage students.

Did you know that Waverley has a foodbank? Over the past few years the church has given out many food parcels to people in the community who have been in genuine need. We would like to make our community in Waverley more widely aware of this service provided by the church. The church has added its name to the National Foodbank list so that it can be found on line. Our foodbank is funded by the Op Shop proceeds, from gifts from the parishioners and people in the community. Waverley Four Square have been very supportive as well so a big ‘Thank You!’ to them. As we are all aware the need has increased, so we would welcome any donations, especially tins and anything that is non-perishable. Sadly we are not set up to take fresh produce. If you would like to donate please leave at the Op Shop which is open Wednesday to Friday, 10am until 1pm. If you know of anyone needing help with food please call or text the church’s number 0273 870 670. To those who have contributed thanks again for your support. May God bless us all! Church phone number: 0273 870 670. Foodbank NZ: https://www.foodbank.co.nz/ waverley-baptist-church-foodbank.

Open Day at the Patea Freezing Works Display Building On Saturday 16 July we will be having another Open Day from 10am to 3pm, on the corner of Egmont and Lincoln Street. It is a rare opportunity to look inside the Freezing Works Display building. With the build up to the 40 year anniversary of the closure of the Freezing Works on 3 September this year, we want to open the doors to show some of the relics of The Works we have, and hopefully hear some of your stories. Over 20 years ago Patea Historical Society were fortunate to be offered the two old refrigeration compressors from The Works, which are on display in the building. The Linde Compressor (the green machine) was made in London in 1902, it is thought there are only two of them left intact and in working condition the world. It is a Horizontal Single Cylinder Compressor, belt driven by an electric motor. The Flywheel alone weighs 1.8 tons and has been set up in the display so that it can be seen turning. It was purchased by the Patea Freezing Company in 1904, when the freezing of meat first began in Patea. The Gordon Compressor (the yellow machine) was made in Melbourne, Australia around 1930. It is a twin cylinder machine which compressed ammonia for refrigeration. Driven by an electric motor with 14 vee-belts. It was installed at The Patea Works when ‘the chain’ was introduced in 1934/35. There are also realistic models of freezing works men and sheep in the display, as well as old photos and other memorabilia from the Works. We are hoping to have some videos of the works in operation for this open day. We would also welcome the loan of photographs or donations of photographs and other memorabilia of the freezing works to better tell the story of the works and its impact on our town. A selection of books published by Patea Historical Society will be available for sale. For more information about the Freezing Works and other Patea History go to our Website or Facebook page: Patea Historical Society.
