Patea Historical Society host a tour of the town The Whanganui Summer programme came to Patea on Monday 17 January for an actionpacked day in the sunshine. We started with a slide show 'A walk through Egmont St through the years' at the Hunter Shaw building, then actually walked Egmont St as it is today, stopping to talk to locals as we did. We had lunch at the Patea Old Folks Hall, looked through Aotea Utanganui Museum, then down to the beach, through Mana Bay and over to the wreck of the SS Waitangi. We finished by doing the Patea River Walk. Another trip full of discovery and historical information from our area. Jacq Dwyer, President of Patea Historical Society

A Christian Word Psalm 103 v 8-14. The lord is compassionate and gracious, long-suffering and forever constant; He will not always be our accuser or nurse His anger for all time. He has not treated us as our sins deserve or requited us for our misdeeds. For as the Heaven stands high above the earth, so His strong love stands high over all who fear Him. For as east is from the West, so far has He put our offences away from us. As a father has compassion on his children, so has the Lord compassion on all who fear Him. For He knows how we were made, He knows full well we are dust. This Psalm is wonderful! It not only shows how gracious God is toward us, He has not treated us as our sins deserve!! Praise God for that alone. His love for all He created; you, me and all the rest of the world – everybody – regardless. That is God’s shining glory, His love for you, even as a sinner! This is the gracious character of God Almighty, He loves you. Yes, you have sinned, but God is showing you here that it can all be wiped away – forgiven, as far as the west is from the west! But you need to read and understand the “small pint” if you like – His compassion towards you extends to those who fear Him. He cannot forgive you for your sins unless you repent, turn away from them and mean business! No game playing here, this is too serious for you to even mock God. Time is definitely running out for all mankind and the urgency of the hour us upon us all. Don’t be like the people in Noah’s day, partying and carousing and deliberately ignoring the hour swiftly coming and all but 8 people were saved! God is going to judge the world through His Son Jesus Christ, everyone will be there. If you have not received God’s forgiveness for your sins then you will realise, be it late, that you should have taken God much more seriously. You have to be certain that Jesus Christ is your personal Lord and Savior, don’t treat this as nonsense, because God is giving you this short time to understand and respond. Come Lord Jesus Ted Reeves, Patea

Waverley Summer Jam It is with extreme regret that we announce the cancellation of the 2022 Waverley Summer Jam due to the nationwide change in traffic light status to Red. Under new government safety protocols announced last month, the Waverley Summer Jam could only be held under an Orange or Green traffic light status for the region. We’re deeply disappointed that the Summer Jam can no longer go ahead as planned, but our number one priority is for the safety and wellbeing of our attendees, musicians, and volunteers. So much work has gone into the planning of what we had hoped would be a great community event and we’d like to thank all our sponsors and supporters who have helped create this special event. We hope to be back bigger and better than ever in December for Christmas 2022. We will keep everyone posted.

The second half of the season kicked off on the 6th January with a good attendance considering it was still the festive season. All were happy to be back on the greens. Despite January being really hot we have managed to cope, but for once the breeze has always been extremely welcome. The Club has had a couple of working bees during December and January, many thanks to those who had turned up equipped with rakes and shovels. With a good turn out of helpers it makes the job much easier and quicker. December had a few events with Inglewood Club joining us for a really fun day. Everyone enjoyed the company and the scrumptious morning and afternoon tea as well as lunch provided by Club members. Our Club Doubles were played with the results being, winners: Jacqui Boon and Sally Newland and runners-up: Alan MacDonald and Colleen Hayman. Well done. During January there were 8 Jumpshots and 13 Hole in Ones. It is always a delight to anyone who has accomplished one or on some days two. Upcoming Events: Sat 29th January: RSA Doubles 9.30 for 10am start bring your own lunch. Weds 2nd & Sat 5th February: Club Singles, we have alot to get through so are setting these Club dates to achieve this. Weds 16th February: Wanganui Club will be joining us, 1pm start could members bring a plate for afternoon tea. Joe left us on Friday 14 January. He was one of the longest serving businessmen in Patea and was so passionate about what he did to serve his community. Son of the late Connie and Mick Bourke, brother of Robert, Michelle & Jim. Loved partner of 36 years to Deb. From an early age Joe had a passion for all things mechanical. By the time he was a teenager, his friends and neighbours recognised his uncanny ability to fix all manner of things and would drop machinery etc off to be repaired. The nick name ‘Doc’ was soon coined. Around 1985 Joe bought Universal Motors on Dorset Street, Patea, and has run it like a well-oiled machine ever since. In 1988 he joined the Patea Volunteer Fire Brigade and served for 17 years, rising to the rank of Deputy Chief Fire Officer. He was a driving force to restore the 1944 V8 Patea Fire Truck, which is now a treasured asset of the Patea Brigade. It took Joe on his ‘last call’ on the day of his funeral at the Bourke Family farm at Whenuakura on 18 January. In 2004 he was made a life member. His affiliation with the Brigade remained strong right to the end. Joe, with the constant help of Deb was a big part of the Patea Bowling Club. He was a hard working and well respected President of the Club. Retaining and enhancing its current status as a well run, tidy green with a well stocked bar. Patea Historical Society committee will also miss the company and knowledge of their dear friend and fellow committee member Joe. He had a strong understanding and pride of his family history and helped write the Bourke Family story for a book about Alton that will be available soon. His great grandfather Patrick Bourke arrived in Patea in the early 1870s from Ireland, via the gold fields of Victoria and Central Otago. Settling on land at Whenuakura, bought with earnings from almost 20 years of goldmining. He later bought 300 acres at Alton. Joe and Deb were at a film night at Jim Bakers just before Christmas. One of the films was of footage from when Harry Baker owned Universal Motors in the 1940’s. It showed mechanics working on old cars and Joe was delighted to see that the garage today still looks a lot like it did back then. As the movie camera zoomed in on the car engines, Joe could tell us exactly what kind of motor it was and what years it was made!! Joe kept a lot of vehicles going over the years, made lifelong friends with so many of us, and will leave a big gap in the landscape of our town. Rest in Peace Joe, you will not be forgotten.

Happy New Year everyone, we are looking forward to a fantastic year of learning! It has been lovely to welcome our tamariki and whānau back to kindergarten after the Christmas break; the children spent the first few weeks back reconnecting with friends and building relationships, as well as enjoying water and sand play in the shade during the hot days. We were happy to see that our vegetable garden had flourished over the break, and we have been picking cherry tomatoes, strawberries, spinach, and peas for the tamariki to enjoy. It is so rewarding for them to see (and taste!) the end product of the gardening process, from planting, watering and weeding to sharing healthy kai. Yum! Kaitiakitanga, taking care of our environment, is an important part of kindergarten life and gardening is one of the ways we encourage the children to take part in caring for our place. This year we welcome Megan to our permanent teaching team, Megan has been a longterm reliever since July last year, so she knows the children and whānau well – we are excited to have her as a permanent part of the team! In March, Annie and Megan will be joined by Andrea, who will be the other permanent member of our team. We warmly welcome Andrea to the kindergarten and community. Our kindergarten session runs each day Monday to Friday from 8.45-2.45. We offer 20 hours free to all children from two years of age. If you are looking for Early Childhood Education for your child, give us a call on 021 377 848 or email maxwell@wmkindergartens.org.nz

Pātea Community Board Meeting

Notes from the meeting on Wednesday 26 January 2022 4pm, provided by the Board members. The first meeting for the year was held at the Ngamatapouri Hall. Present were: Pātea Community Board members; Jacq, Jo, Maria (via video link), Rob Northcott (Pātea Ward Councillor), Phil Nixon (Mayor), Janine Maruera (Community Development Officer), Sara Dymond (PA), Liam Dagg (Group Manager Environmental Services). And three locals. Apologies from: Dianne Lance. Open Forum: David gave us an update on the Nukumaru Station Road, it is all progressing well. There are also a lot less roaming cattle on the Ngamatapouri roads. Scott gave us an update on what hasbeen happening in the Ngamatapouri area. Beehives are thick in the hills for the summer. Logging trucks are busy on the roads again. Pot holes are everywhere on the roads, Council staff were going to photograph some on the way home to report to engineering dept. Robert spoke about the sewerage discharge that went into the Patea River with the heavy rain between Christmas and New Year. The camp ground and beach was full of visitors. Signs were put up warning of pollution. Council need to ensure this isn’t repeated, the pump isn’t able to keep up. He also reported that its been over 2 years since a Seismic survey was ordered on the Patea Break Water and this still hasn’t happened. The walls are both in very bad condition now and need urgent attention. Motor bikes and 4 wheelers are using the Patea River Walkway, this can be dangerous if they drive too fast and come across someone walking. Jacq asked if the Patea Pools will continue to remain open throughout the red traffic light system. The answer was yes. The pools have been very busy and keeping local kids well occupied. Dean Martin is doing a great job of teaching local kids to surf at the Patea Beach. Dean and Ricki Hapi (Surf Club treasurer) held an open evening at the Surf Club on 7 January. Rob and Jacq went along. Michael Clarkson from Patea Community Patrol was unable to get a report in for this months meeting. But there have been incidents of graffiti on walls and one of Lutha Ashford’s mural, and several cars have been broken into. The Patea Rugby Club storage rooms under the grandstand were also broken into and vandalised just before Christmas. End of Open Forum Liam’s report outlined the large number of new housing consents sort – 25 for Dec/Jan. Sub-divisions are strong in the Hawera/Opunake district. There have been fewer dog attacks, but just as many roaming dogs. Streetside compost collections may soon become a reality in Hawera. Full minutes of this and all Council meetings can be found on the South Taranaki District Council Website, under the heading ‘Our Council’ then go to ‘Mayor & Elected members’ then ‘Community Board - Pātea’. Or view them at Pātea or Waverley Library Plus. Your Community Board Members are: Jacq Dwyer (Chair) Dianne Lance (Deputy Chair), Jo Peacock, Maria Ferris, Robert Northcott (Pātea Councillor). The meeting times & venues for this year are: Wednesday 2 March, 4pm Hunter Shaw Building, Pātea Wednesday 26 January, 4pm Ngamatapouri Hall, Waitōtara Valley Rd, Ngamatapouri Wednesday 13 April, 4pm Kakaramea Hall Wednesday 25 May, 4pm Waverley Community Centre Wednesday 6 July, 4pm Hunter Shaw Building, Pātea Wednesday 17 August, 4pm Waitōtara Hall, 12 Kaipo Street, Waitōtara Wednesday 9 November, 4pm Hunter Shaw Building, Pātea
