Rob Northcott - Appointed South Taranaki Deputy Mayor Newly-elected South Taranaki District Mayor Phil Nixon has chosen Pātea ward councillor Rob Northcott as his deputy. Chair of the Te Mahana Trust, a member of South Taranaki Coastguard, and owner of Northcott Auto Services, this is Rob’s third term, having already served six years alongside Deputy Mayor Phil Nixon. "I'm really pleased to appoint Rob to that position, and he was excited about that," said Nixon, who succeeded mayor Ross Dunlop who did not seek a fifth term. In his time on Council Rob has been involved with a wide rage of committees and has a thorough understanding of Council processes. "I'm pleased and honoured to accept the role," he said. "This district has been good to me and Pātea has been good to me, and I am happy to give something back,” he said, adding “I'm pleased and honoured to accept the role". The Patea Ward councillors are Robert Northcott and Brian Rook. The four Patea Community Board candidates Jacq Dwyer, Maria Ferris, Dianne Lance and Joanne Peacock were automatically elected unopposed. The new council was welcomed officially with a powhiri in late October, before the ceremony where the mayor, councillors and community board members made their official declarations in front of a crowd of families, friends and community leaders at the Hāwera Community Theatre.

Sexual Harm Crisis Support for Taranaki, based in South Taranaki and reaching isolated areas. WellStop has a new office based in Hawera and would like to welcome anyone, either Social Services or the wider public to call in and talk about what we do. WellStop services have existed for many years in South Taranaki, (previously known as the Safer Centre) but up until last year, has only had an outreach office in Hawera, as a branch from the New Plymouth office. There is now a permanent presence in Hawera with a standalone office space, providing extensive services in the specialised area of Sexual Harm. WellStop’s Sexual Harm Crisis Support Service is now permanently based at 99 Camberwell Road, Hawera. The Crisis support services are a specialist service to provide support and advocacy to people affected by Sexual Harm. With a local office based here in Hawera, it means people can call in themselves at any time, and ask for advice and guidance, without having to tell their story over and over. Referrals can also come from Police, Medical Professionals or any other Community Agency. Crisis support will support clients through what options are available to them and then walk through the process with them if that is what the client wants. This is a specialised service that works closely with MEDSAC (medical) team and Adult Sexual Assault Team from the Police, at the pace the client sets. An essential part of the support provided is ensuring clients have long term therapeutic support, which is something that our wider WellStop service provides. The Crisis Support Team consists of fully qualified and specialised Social Workers, based in the Hawera office, who will respond to a referral within 24 hours, and can provide support to both the primary client and the wider whanau. This service has identified the need to reach isolated communities, and therefore we are a mobile team that services the whole of Taranaki, from Waitotara to Mokau, Opunake and anywhere in between. Other services provided by WellStop, include ACC Sensitive Claims Therapy and Harmful Sexual Behaviour Therapy, Family / Whanau Support, as well as the Mates and Dates programme being delivered in High Schools. These services are all able to be provided regularly in our Hawera office and around the South Taranaki region, and are an essential part of providing wraparound support in this specialised realm of work. Crisis Support includes both recent and historic harm that has occurred. Our service provides advice and options to help you decide what your next step forward is. If you need to contact Wellstop Sexual Harm Crisis Support Service, phone 0800 WellStop (0800 9355 7867) and press 1 for Taranaki. This number is a 24/7 phone line, and after hours will be answered by Victim Support, or text / phone 027 572 2028.

Leonard Cave was born in Whanganui and spent his early years on the family farm up the river. His first musical experiences were listening to his mother sing as she worked around the house and then singing treble solos in the chapel choir at St George’s under Yvonne Puryer (whose father was organist at Trinity Methodist Church). After graduating B. Mus. from Auckland university, he won a national organ playing competition and went to London for three years organ study under Nicholas Danby at the Guildhall School of Music. During this time he was assistant organist at St Mary’s parish Church in Hitchin Herts. and gained wider experience performing in England and Germany. He also gained a Diploma in Organ Performance from the Royal College of Music. On returning to New Zealand, Leonard pursued a career in teaching, performing, conducting and adjudicating. He has played all over the country from Kaitaia to Queenstown as both soloist and accompanist. For three years he was president of the Auckland Organists’ Association. While Head of Music at Pukekohe High School he formed the Franklin District Choir which he directed for thirteen years and was on occasions guest conductor for the South Auckland Choral Society and the Papakura Civic Orchestra. His last major appointment was as Director of Music at St Paul’s Collegiate School in Hamilton; a position he held for ten years. For a number of these years he also directed the Waikato University Choir. Leonard has returned to Whanganui in his retirement for a more peaceful life, weeding the garden, walking the dog and being closer to his son Matthew who plays in the NZSO in Wellington.

A Christian Word

If you have ever carried a backpack for a considerable time, you will know the weight of it seems to increase as the day wears on. Your only desire is to arrive at your destination or just remove it! Sin has the same effect, we can deny its existence and stagger on, but! It is a heavy load to have to carry and even though it’s not a physical matter, there is this built in ‘mechanism’ to need to remove the weight of sin from off of us. One thing is certain by God’s word, we are all sinners and fall short of the Glory of God! Criminals who have keep their crimes secret, eventually one day they will confess them to someone. There is this in-built desire to be clean and free from any condemnation, because we are made in God’s likeness, therefor sin has absolutely no part of who we are. Since Adam and Eve’s disobedience we have all sadly continued to sin. Sin can be such a subtle occurrence, such as picking up a pen off someone’s table and putting it in your pocket with no guilt at all! But think … it was not yours in the first place. Because we start with these little ‘no consequence’ matters, we find our hearts starting to get hard and this is the beginning of the slippery slope when we can steal, lie, cheat etc and think it does not matter. It does, there is a victim through your actions, but you become the biggest victim because all of this sin is weighing you down and you don’t even recognise what is going on. One day you will realise your sinful ways and this built in desire to be free from your sins kicks in big time! How to get free of them…? Well, it’s so easy, you do not need to go to any man and ask them to forgive you of your sins, because they cannot! Only God can through His Son Jesus Christ. When you do this you will experience the weight of sin taken off of you, peace and forgiveness enters in. The one desire within all of mankind is to be forgiven. As God’s word shows us in Romans ch 4 v7-8 “Blessed are they whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord will never count against him”. When you are sincere confessing your sins to Jesus and believe in Him, your lifetime of struggling with a backpack full of sins will be permanently removed by God … never to be held against you! The confession by you will immediately have a huge impact; drop the pack!

Bettie Howarth: Patea Historical Society

GOT A CAR/SUV/UTE TYRE PRICE QUOTE FROM A COMPETITOR?

It is with sadness that we farewelled our amazing Treasurer and friend last week - Bettie Howarth. Bettie had been our Treasurer since 1968, one year after our Society was formed. We will miss her immensely at our meetings, her financial reports were meticulous, and her wit was a delight. Bettie died suddenly of pneumonia in the early hours of Saturday morning, 28 September. You were a treasure to us Bettie and we will never forget you and all you did for Patea in so many ways. This is the tribute I read at Bettie's funeral on Thursday 3 October 2019: Hello to you all. I'm Jacq Dwyer and I'm speaking on behalf of Patea Historical Soc Committee members - Jim, Michael, Dave, Roy, Rob, Harv, Joe, Clive and Howard. Michael in particular is very sorry he can't be here today, his mother Kitty Parsons and Bettie were such good friends. We were all lost for words when we heard Bettie had died. She has been such a huge and pivotal part of our organisation. I'm the President of PHS, but she was our boss. She was at the first meeting in October 1967, and a year later became the Treasurer, a position she has held non stop until the end. When we had our meeting last Tuesday, she was really under the weather, we offered to have the meeting at her place, which she declined as she didn't want to spread her bad cold to us. But she did have her meticulous treasurers report ready, and as usual it was correct to the last cent. We always had to have correct receipts and documentation for Bettie if we wanted reimbursement for expenses, and a real game plan if we wanted to launch into a project. We are in the process of reprinting Ian Church's book, Heartland of Aotea, and it is going to be a costly exercise, 'More than our Freezing Works display building cost 20 yrs ago' Bettie pointed out. Fortunately we have managed to secure partnership funding, which Bettie was incredibly pleased to hear a couple of weeks ago!! Bettie never wasted a thing and she certainly gave a lot to Patea, especially her time. She would leave Greta Thunberg in the dust with her small environmental footprint. She may have had a small calculator, which I didn't see often, but no computer or cell phone! She did long division, adding up rows of numbers, with such ease. Her vege garden was a good old fashioned well laid out variety, and she would share preserved produce from her fruit trees. I have a jar of lemon honey in the fridge that she gave me a couple of weeks ago. She made things last, chopping up bits of wood to burn on the fire. I took her a sack full of firewood on Thursday morning, and said - Bettie don't hold back on this, burn it all in one day, go nuts, Jim will bring you some more next week, but sadly that firewood didn't make it to the fire, she went into hospital that afternoon. She was fiercely loyal to all of us on the PHS committee, and all the committee members that have gone before us, she knew them all, watched them come and go. We would have some good laughs at our meetings, going off on tangents about things that happened many years ago. Bettie could always contribute a fascinating bit of information that would have been lost in time if it wasn't for her. She would have a glass of lemonade while we have beers etc. Suddenly it would be 10pm and we'd say gosh Bettie you'd better give us the treasurer's report! Go well & God bless Bettie, you've left us lots of good memories.

WE WILL BEAT THAT PRICE BY $10.00 A TYRE!

Kakaramea School has a new tohu to acknowledge the area and the important learning and growth journey of our tamariki. Thank you to Whaea Heaven for designing the tohu and embedding the symbolism within it. It is shaped in the form of a blade of grass and symbolises all the connecting elements in which our cherished tamariki need to support and ground them to help grow and nurture them to reach their full potential. It is titled ‘E tipu, e rea … grow and keep growing’ as this is what we desire for all of our learners with the support of their whanau. This tohu symbolises a true sense of belonging for our people and our place.

Artworks start arriving in Ōpunakē soon for the Taranaki National Art Awards, a highlight of our regions creative calendar. Celebrating its 18th year in 2019, the annual awards has attracted a record number of 347 entries from all over New Zealand. The exhibition showcases artworks in seven categories, with all artist in the running for a prize pool of over $12,000. South Taranaki District Council Arts Coordinator, Michaela Stoneman says “The Awards attract a diverse range of work and offer an opportunity for emerging artists to show work alongside more established artists. The exhibition offers wide scope for visitors to start or add to their art collection, with works priced between $80-$16,000. A great example of a small town doing it for themselves, the event is a real achievement for the voluntary committee to continue to secure sponsorship and organise it each year”. Judges for 2019 are Karl Chitham and Aileen Burns, bringing their wide knowledge and experience of art theory and practice to the task. Karl Chitham (Ngā Puhi) is Director of the Dowse Art Museum in Lower Hutt. He has been involved in the arts in Aotearoa in a variety of roles for over 15 year and was formerly the Director and Curator of Tauranga Art Gallery. Aileen Burns is currently co-director of GovettBrewster Art Gallery /Len Lye Centre in New Plymouth. Originally from Canada, Burns holds a Master of Modern Art: Critical & Curatorial Studies from Columbia University in New York in 2010. Waverley Primary School Exciting things have been happening at Waverley Primary School. Kauri and Rimu Hub: We were so excited to be part of the ‘Festival of Cultures’ Tamariki Kapahaka Festival in Whanganui in October. Unfortunately, we experienced huge disappointment when the event had to be postponed due to weather. However, the ever organised Mrs Sanson was on the phone immediately, arranging with a few local schools who kindly rearranged their day to accommodate us. We hopped in the van, cars and bus and travelled to Kakaramea and Whenuakura and performed our bracket to the schools. The spine-tingling performances were enjoyed by all! We are so fortunate to have the support from Whaea Rongo and Whaea Dionne; who have helped us immensely with putting our performance together. There are plans to postpone the festival, so we are all eagerly awaiting to hear the new date of the event at Majestic Square.

Maxwell and Districts Kindergarten Each fortnight on Wednesday mornings, we have a visit from the library bus which travels from Whanganui, visiting the rural communities and schools around the area. We are very fortunate to offer experiences like this to our children and families, it’s a great way to remind the children of the etiquette of visiting a library area – quiet voices and treating books with care and respect. We take a small group, return our collection from the previous fortnight and each choose a few favourites to borrow and read. The children love visiting the librarian, Wigs, and particularly love getting a stamp from her as we return to Kindergarten! Reading and stories offer such wide variety of learning for children. Early literacy skills, social skills, turn taking, listening and patience. Stories help children learn the difference between ‘real’ and ‘make believe’ and, of course, offers quality time together. Our book corner at Kindergarten is a popular and treasured area and our library book additions each fortnight offer fresh and interesting new stories for us all discover and share. Arohanui, Michaela, Katherine and Annie

Whenuakura School - growing personal excellence

It is hard to believe that we are now well into term 4. Our learners returned from their break full of energy and enthusiasm for lots of learning and new experiences. We have welcomed Toby and Emmy who have started in the Teina Nest. We are excited to have you join us for your learning adventure. At the end of last term we sadly farewelled our fantastic cleaner, Marky. Marky has been a huge part of our school community for many years and we will miss having her around. We wish her all the best and she has promised to keep in touch, and keep making cakes for our Pet Days! Kia kaha, kia maia, kia manawanui Lamb and Pet Day This seems like a long time ago now, but we would like to acknowledge everyone who contributed to making this another successful day. We made the right decision to postpone it early, and we hope this was useful for you all as well. All the children love to show off their pets, and we have received some very positive feedback from all the hard work they put into the hall displays. Once again we secured some fantastic sponsorship from both locals and not so local businesses, so thank you so much to all of these. Our auction and cakes were a huge success, and many thanks to everyone who put their cooking skills (and some not so much “cooking”!!) to the test, and also to everyone who won items at the auction. Also a huge thank you to all of our judges. They all take their roles very seriously and put a lot of thought into their decisions. We appreciate the support and patronage of our local and wider community and sponsors, whom without their contribution this event wouldn’t be nearly as successful. Many thanks as well to Nicky Grey, who comes along and takes amazing photos of the day. Check out these photos below.

November 2019 - 15 National Chess Tournament At the start of the holidays we spent two days of chess competing with New Zealand’s best, at the National Chess Tournament 2019 as Whanganui Representatives (Primary). We are very proud of our team who did themselves, our school, and whanau proud - Devin Miller, Lorcan Honeyfield, Oliver Crawford and Jack Hurley. We gave their brains a well deserved rest by going to flip city, out for dinner, and exploring Himatangi Beach (with a few photoshoots in between) Thank you to Alva Honeyfield, Kelly Crawford, Alison Hurley and Geoffrey Miller for your support.

Duffy Role Model Assembly The more you read, the more you know! At the end of last term we had a wonderful Duffy Role Model assembly, with Jo Guy as our role model. Jo kept the learners engaged as she shared some of her life experiences and encouraged us to always be kind and look after each other. Once again the students were excited to receive their books, and many thanks to our sponsors Craig Wadesworth and Shannon Austin. Tennis The tennis season has started. Thank you Taranaki Tennis for your organisation. This term we are participating in the Hot Shots Tennis programme coached by Jaime Simpson from Blitz Tennis. Thanks so much to TSB Community Trust for this fantastic donation of tennis gear, and Taranaki Tennis for the organisation and delivery. It will be the end of the year before we know it! Our school calendar is getting extremely full, so keep an eye on our facebook page for all the activities, photos and learning experiences.

Kia Ora Koutou, Hi everyone, we’ve got a busy term ahead with our Performing Arts as our whole school focus. We will be writing poetry, acting plays, singing and dancing. Our last assembly in Term 3 was a lovely celebration to farewell Megan Buchanan and Nadine Fuchs our student teachers. The Senior class and staff were treated to some delicious German baking from Nadine and the Junior class enjoyed cookie monster cupcakes from Mrs Buchanan. It was also book character day which was a hit with all staff and students.
