Maxwell & Districts Kindergarten Ruby visits Maxwell Kindergarten Today was the day that a pony came to Kindergarten! We were so excited and fortunate to have Ruby the pony and her family Amanda and Harriet McAree come and play today, Ruby trotted into our playground, calm and slow, like nothing out of the ordinary. The children who wanted to, were lifted up on her back, safety helmets intact and taken for a circuit or two around our playground, behind the swings, through the forest track, around the back of our garden and back to the seats. Ruby was so well behaved, it didn’t take long for the children who were at first a little unsure to warm up to her and want a ride too. Experiences like this at Kindergarten can challenge children and their comfort

zones along with help empower their confidence. Our Early Childhood curriculum talks about nurturing children’s sense of belonging by experiencing an environment where connecting links with the family and wider world are affirmed and extended. We are fortunate to have so many rural families, with a variety of farm animals like Ruby the pony. Our children are growing up with the gratitude and sense of responsibility that it takes to care for other living things and be a part of many experiences, like today, shared in our community. Thank you Amanda, Harriet for bringing Ruby in for rides today at Maxwell Kindergarten, we loved having you all here! Arohanui, Michaela, Katherine, Annie

Time is a great healer; pain does dissolve through this process and slowly the sun comes up on a new day. I know a lot of people have been through their own anguish and even though people mean well, it can still be a lonely experience. We are still in touch with the senseless massacre in Christchurch on March 15, it will one day slowly fade away to a more bearable but not a tolerable one. I need to point out all sorts of calamities and people’s lives being taken. We have as a nation been through a lot of wars, where many lives were lost. There’s been more natural types of mishaps, like earthquakes, rail disasters, road deaths in the 100s per year, and of course murders. Once we were shocked at just one or two murders a year, but because it is streamed through the media we have got a bit “ho hum” and it’s fair to say all these killings around the world, take Syria for example, the use of gas and barrel bombs against civilians, we see it on the news and we’re just kinda conditioned to it, or we’re not sure how to make a stand, so we let it slide by, yes our consciences are getting a little hardened by death, which at one time, frightened us! The Government wants to change the guns laws. Why? If someone wants a gun or guns, they can acquire them! But if the Government feels that strong against our easy gun law and decide to take a stand (bit late!) and make it very difficult to obtain a gun, then I would challenge our views of humanity towards guns being misused by asking you this, if someone shoots another human we cry foul and lock them up, hopefully more than 14 years! So why do we allow 1000s of unborn babies to be butchered in their mother’s womb and we do nothing to stand up for the very smallest minority of humanity. Who is going to voice their concerns about this? Should the Government ban scalpels from being used by Doctors? Why do we run with what we consider bad, but chose to ignore something that goes on right in front of us daily? I’m not demeaning the catastrophe in Christchurch. I’m asking why we are so bias. Why is one type of murder different to another type of murder and condoned by the Government? We will all stand before God and every word we have spoken we will be accountable for. God most definitely is against anyone being murdered, it’s one of the 10 commandments. We’ve certainly got to get a correct perspective, even if the Government doesn’t … we can! I stood on the side of the road one day waving an anti 1080 banner – purely because I believe it is not the answer to saving our wildlife, considering 1080 kills them! But my point is, sometime in your life you have got to stand up for what you believe in. Personally I believe in Jesus Christ, Saviour of us all, guarantee of eternal life, healer, able to set you free of fears etc and so loving. He is my champion, He strengthens me and He most definitely loves me and you! So when I hear statistics of unborn babies butchered or is that murdered? I get very angry and frustrated at being unable to express my opinion, I ask Father God to sort us out, He will one day. But next month I will endeavour to point out why God does not intervene, as I want Him too!

Air quality and its effects on respiratory health - partnership announced

A newly formed partnership between Asthma and Respiratory Foundation NZ (ARFNZ) and NIWA (National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research) aims to provide the latest air quality research to over 700,000 people living with respiratory conditions in New Zealand. Air pollutants such as nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter created by human-made sources – including road transport emissions are known to cause major health issues. Letitia O’Dwyer, Chief Executive of Asthma and Respiratory Foundation NZ reports, “Air pollution in the environment can cause and aggravate respiratory diseases such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and lung cancer.” “Our newly formed partnership with NIWA aims to provide our community with information about their local and regional air quality, to assist in making informed decisions about their respiratory health. We also aim to alert Kiwis of areas within the country to avoid due to significantly high levels of air pollutants,” says Letitia. The partnership will also provide an opportunity for the asthma and respiratory community to participate in future studies, ensuring that air quality research is relevant and representative of participants that will greatly benefit from its research. Dr Guy Coulson, Air Quality Scientist at NIWA says, “We are looking forward to working with the Asthma and Respiratory Foundation NZ. We anticipate that this partnership will help us to continue to ensure that our air quality research is useful and relevant to the New Zealand public and will also help us to reach some of the people for whom our research findings are most relevant.” World Earth Day is an annual event and the world’s largest environmental movement. Respiratory disease in New Zealand: • Respiratory disease includes asthma, bronchiectasis, childhood bronchiolitis, childhood pneumonia and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). • Respiratory disease is New Zealand’s third most common cause of death. • Respiratory disease costs New Zealand more than $7 billion every year (Barnard & Zhang, 2018). • One in six (over 700,000) New Zealanders live with a respiratory condition, and these rates are worsening (Barnard & Zhang, 2018). • Respiratory disease accounts for one in ten of all hospital stays (Barnard & Zhang, 2018). • More than half of the people admitted to hospital with a poverty-related condition are there because of a respiratory problem such as asthma, bronchiolitis, acute infection or pneumonia (Barnard & Zhang, 2018). • People living in the most deprived households are admitted to hospital for respiratory illness over three times more often than people from the wealthiest areas (Barnard & Zhang, 2018). • Across all age groups, hospitalisation rates are much higher for Pacific peoples (2.5 times higher) and Māori (2.4 times higher) than for other ethnic groups (Barnard & Zhang, 2018).

Whenuakura School - ‘Growing Personal Excellence’ Welcome back to term two everyone. The end of term one was very busy with learning as we really do make the most of every opportunity. We have such a great community who make all of our school events and projects possible. For example, we now have our worm farm running - thank you to John and Lynne Smailes for helping with this. Thank you also to Geoffrey Miller who has looked after our school pool over the summer. This term we have Jo England who will be taking maternity leave. Thank you Jo for your passion and hard work. We welcome Alice McColl who will now be teaching in our Tuakana Hive for the remainder of the year. We also welcome Soni Kennealy who is completing her teacher aide studies. Thank you for all that you have contributed already to our school.

We held our first AgriKids school competition. Learners collaborated in teams to complete our Agri-based activities: - Shear the Sheep - Hit the Nail - Change a Tyre - Dig a Hole - Tractor Push - Milk Taste Test - Hole in the bucket - Gumboot Throw The great obstacle course saw teams pushing wheelbarrows, barrels and reels, climbing ladders, opening and closing gates, carrying posts, jumping and running through tyres, paddocks, sand...and more! Thank you Dean Sorenson for your organisation and everyone else who helped.

Connected Curriculum

Sometimes our greatest taonga are in our backyard. We enjoyed a very educational stay at Wai-o-Turi marae. Principal’s Address

Patea Area School

Tena koutou Term one has been huge! I’m not sure who has done more learning this term, me as the new Principal or the students doing so many amazing things in the classroom. One of the highlights of the year so far for me has been the naming of our school leaders. Back in March we named the Senior Prefects. Then in April we named our Middle School and Junior School Prefects. Our full list of Prefects are as follows: Year 5-6: Madison Powell, Hana Forbes, Miley Davidson, Maearna-Haleigh Leatherby, Year 7-8: Karleigh Moir, Jake Gibb, Hannah Honeyfield, Tuck Kahukuranui, Year 9-10: Dante Moore-Potini, Te Pouwhare Parkinson, Misaydeze Eru-Werehi, Te Rauhui Gawler, Misty-Haze Waihape, Year 11-13: Kaena Anderson, Heremea Eru, Rashuvit Lal, Te Anahera Maraki-Tamatea, Tasiah Marino, Jenneva Millar, Charlotte Stark, Kahurangi Whakatutu, Fernatiwhai WindelevWilson For many of our leaders, the ANZAC services held in Patea, Waverley and Alton marked the start of their duties as Prefects. We were all humbled by the stories of bravery and sacrifice made by our service men and women. We look to them as examples of what leadership and being a good person can look like. In other news, we have two building projects that have been in the works for some time. Firstly, the junior school playground was installed over the holidays. The year 1-6s have waiting patiently and will have a great time swinging and climbing on it. Secondly, we are currently installing our new artificial turf behind the Gym. The TSB community trust have made this project possible with a very generous grant. This is the first time they have funded a project in Patea and we are extremely excited to be working with them. The multipurpose turf will be used for basketball, tennis, netball, hockey and will allow the students at Patea Area School greater access to sporting activities. Our Term two inquiry “HIStory is HERstory” focuses on the role of Women in our society and aims to raise awareness of gender inequality. As with all our inquiry topics, we hope to challenge and engage our learning in something that is relevant, interesting and engaging. I hope you have all enjoyed a great Easter break and I know the coming term will present many opportunities for students to show off the PRIDE values. Be sure to check out the rest of this page for some of the other activities the students of Patea Area School have been involved in. Nga Mihi James Davidson

Our Year 1-8s got the chance to listen to broadcaster Kingi Biddle speak at our Duffy Books assembly. In 2013 Kingi was placed 2nd in the World Championship of Public Speaking so we knew we were in for a treat! Our tamariki loved listening to Kingi's stories and jokes before receiving their Duffy books from him and having them signed. Thank you so much, Kingi for sharing your love of books with us and a big thank you as well to our Duffy sponsors, Burns and Ferrall Ltd, for their continued support of our school.

Students putting on their gumboots to support “Mike King's Gumboot Friday” mental health event. At the start of the holidays Patea Area School sent a team to the Ki o Rahi Nationals in The Hawke’s Bay. Although we didn’t place, it was a great learning opportunity for all involved.

Kia Ora Koutou everyone It is hard to believe that the time has come for me to write my final Patea Press as Principal of Waitotara School. We are very fortunate that Mrs Devane will be taking on the role of Acting Principal for Terms 2 & 3 while the BOT make an appointment for a permanent principal. They are hoping to make an appointment in the next several months with a Term 4 start date. The Senior Class are very lucky to be gaining Mr Alistair White as their Principal Release teacher for 2 days per week. Alistair is the past Principal of Kai iwi School and knows several of the students already. Tabloid Sports We had another fantastic day at Cooks Gardens recently. The Junior Class had a fun day participating in lots of different games and activities, such as, obstacle courses, chuck the chicken, relays, stuck in the mud. A big thank you to all the helpers on the day. Grandparents Day Thank you to all the Grandparents, Aunties, Uncles, Mums and family friends who came to school for this special day. The children had a lovely time rock painting and writing poetry. Check out the awesome photos below.

Seniors - letters from a soldier 1914-1918

Museum Trip Last week the Junior Class visited the Whanganui Museum to learn more about Anzac Day. Lisa from the Museum told us the story about how the Kiwi bird sacrificed his beautiful wings and coloured feathers for the Mahuta so he wouldn't get eaten by the insects. This is what the NZ soldiers did for us, they sacrificed their lives so we could live in peace today. The seniors have written excellent letters as if they were a soldier in the trenches, writing home to their loved ones and the juniors have described there day at the Army Museum.

ANZAC DAY 2019, Alton It’s been six years since we moved our War Memorial to its new spot by the Alton Hall, and once again our ANZAC Day service was a special day. Over 250 people in attendance to remember the soldiers that fought for our country. Reverend Mele Prescott gave this beautiful address to the crowd: I am deeply honoured and humbled by this invitation to be here together with you all in Alton this ANZAC Day. As a New Zealand born Tongan, I am sincerely grateful to the Alton Community for this unique opportunity to give this address commemorating this very significant day for our neighbours, our nation, and beyond. I would like to especially pay my respects and acknowledge at this time the Alton men who served in World War I and in World War II. I acknowledge the families and the community that these men came from. We honour you and all your men who gave their lives for us, for our country; those who died and those who survived. We remember them all. Lest we forget on this ANZAC Day the great sacrifices of the past and also those who in the present day continue to lay down their lives every day for our land, our people and our freedom. We honour and celebrate the lives of family members of some of you here today, as well as share in mourning with you and your families for them this day. Last weekend our children (and adults) were on a great sugar high with Easter eggs as we celebrated Easter. In this Resurrection spirit and life that is freely given to us at Easter, I would like to share my story of what ANZAC day means as a Tongan, a New Zealander, and a citizen of our world today. My parents migrated to Aotearoa New Zealand in 1973 from the Kingdom of Tonga. I am of the first generation of New Zealand-born Tongan migrants that whakapapa back to Tonga - which wasn't a colony of New Zealand or England, therefore, I share and speak from the perspective of a nation that has not experienced the immediate impact of war. I will never understand what it feels like to be enrolled into cadet training as a 12-year-old at school, as happened under the Defence Act in 1909. I will never understand how it might feel for my father to return from overseas war, severely wounded either physically or mentally, and see him struggle to integrate back into the family and society. For my family and Tongan community we will never understand nor feel the deep sense of grief and loss as loved ones are remembered on ANZAC. I will never feel the disparity of the foreign shores of Gallipoli, like our troops did over 100 years to this day. However, today, what I do feel as a New Zealand born Tongan is the freedom to express what it means for me to be Tongan in Aotearoa New Zealand. A freedom that, had our people not risked or given their lives for it, we may never have had. What I feel is a sense of honour. Proud to be a New Zealander and what it stands for. Proud that I can feel the assurance and acceptance that I too can stand alongside my friends and community who do understand and feel the immediate impact of war. With this honour comes duty, our duty to pass on to our children’s children and future generations of New Zealanders the stories of remembrance, old and new, of ANZAC Day. With this honour comes a responsibility as a Tongan to reassure our neighbours and friends in New Zealand that we

will be present and come alongside you and your families always on this significant day. Today I am truly blessed to live out and express the freedom and identity I have in this country that was made possible by the men and women who laid down their lives over 100 years ago, and those who continue to do so today for you and I. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. Ka maumahara tonu tātou ki a rātou – we will remember them. Rev Mele Prescott
