Waverley Playcentre We’ve had a wonderful start to 2020 here at our centre. We’ve recently had a visit to Whenuakura School to go through their fantastic maze! With lots of tunnels to walk through and props to look at (nothing too scary) The kids loved it! Whenuakura School are having their maze fright nights with spaces available for the 29th Feb and the 6th-7th March from 8:30pm. With soft scare hours both saturdays from 7pm. More info on their Facebook page. We’ve had beautiful weather and the children are making the most of our outside area with the addition of a brand new trampoline. There is always something fun to do inside if it gets too hot outdoors; crafts, painting and lots of imagination play. We farewelled a few families at the end of last year but are welcoming more and more new families as the term progresses. We love seeing new kids coming to explore and enjoy what our centre has to offer. We’re are also looking forward to a visit from Hawera playcentre at the end of March. We have an Easter raffle coming up with tickets available mid-end of March. We love seeing new families at our Playcentre, everyone is welcome! If you are interested in joining us come and take advantage of our three free sessions to see if it’s for you. We are open Wednesdays & Fridays 9am - 12pm.

A Christian Word

To borrow a saying “you never forget a person who came to you with a torch in the dark” is intriguing, for me it speaks of a time in my life when things were dark. I had no understanding at the time of any choices or options, when one is in such a terrible state/place, it certainly is time for someone to turn up with a torch to show you the way. For me personally, I called out to God and challenged Him by saying “God if you are who you claim to be … prove it”. He did turn up with a torch, His truth, I had no doubts whatsoever that my challenge had been met by God, and swiftly! I experienced a moment so powerful it has sustained me for over 30+ years. God spoke life into my darkness and set me totally free. There is no way I could just go through some religion routine if I had not met with Him personally. The change had to be so powerful and life transforming, enabling me to not have to try to be, but to rest and trust God to be! I wonder how many of you maybe are in a dark and lonely place right now. Let me assure you, there is a torch – Jesus. He is the way, the truth and the life. When you have had enough disillusionments and betrayals, disappointments too big to handle, do not fear! Call out to God Almighty, ask Him to help you. He will - meeting with Almighty God is life transforming. You do not have to do anything to build on this, Jesus has paid the ultimate price for you to freely meet Him with no obligations whatsoever. Life is too beautiful for you to be walking about with ball and chain, ask God to set you free because only He can!’ You deserve a much better life and it is in and through Jesus Christ only. He waits patiently for you to come and ask Him to restore you fully into His ways and they’re not hard either. You will never forget a person… Come Lord Jesus Ted Reeves, Patea

Maxwell Kindergarten

Many of the children have been using our collection of driftwood to create different imaginative play scenarios outside lately. The driftwood is a ‘loose parts’ resource; a way for children to use materials spontaneously and creatively as they engage with their environment. Loose parts can be moved around, experimented with and are open ended, so the play is unique, created and managed by the children. Working as part of a group to create structures from the driftwood can be challenging, and encourages the children to work together cooperatively. They are building their communication skills as they share ideas, listen to the suggestions of others and solve problems. As they manipulate the resources, they are developing their motor skills, hand-eye coordination and concentration. It is awesome to see such great learning happening at kindergarten, and of course the best part about loose parts and imaginative play is how much fun the children have while they learn!

Exciting things have been happening at Waverley Primary School: The year has started with a visit from Harold and Mark, The Life Education team. Sadly for the Year 8 students, this was their last opportunity to see Harold. The Life Education classroom is a fun way to promote health. Students have covered a range of topics including healthy eating, making friends, peer pressure and being safe online.

Left: Harold enjoyed a stroll around the playground. Below: The Year 8 students have a final picture with Harold and Mark. Bottom: Harold can’t resist tickling Ky-Mani.

A word from our MP Harete Hipango

This September, voters will be asked whether or not they support the proposed Cannabis Legalisation and Control Bill. There are two things worth pointing out – one, this Bill (and debate) is different from the Medicinal Cannabis Bill which was passed into law last December, and two, decriminalising and legalising are two very different issues with their own implications. I support decriminalising – in other words, users/consumers of small amounts of cannabis for personal use are exempt from criminal conviction – which has enduring consequences for many. I am yet to be persuaded by and convinced of a robust and plausible argument in favour of the legalisation of recreational cannabis. Cannabis is used by people from all socio-economic backgrounds, and while some consume it for ‘recreation’, others become dependent on and captive to it. The ‘recreational’ users – those who use for leisure and temporary sensory pleasure (often associated with higher socio-economic classes and/or ‘white privilege’), are not the same type of users as those most prone or predisposed to addiction – the need/desire to escape reality of economic and/or societal hardships and prejudice. This is the reality of the people and communities I have worked amidst throughout my almost 30 years in criminal, family, youth, child welfare and mental health law. Do I have a bias? Most definitely. Cannabis addiction is a pre-cursor to ongoing and intensified harm, domestic & social problems, family violence, intra and inter-familial issues, mental health afflictions and intergenerational cyclical manifestations. A recent report carried out by Royal Society Te Apārangi, confirms as much. The report found recreational cannabis to be associated with mental illness, particularly in youth, drug use disorders, respiratory illness, impaired cognition, increased road accidents and lower birthweight in babies born to women exposed to cannabis. There is an inequity in the argument in favour of cannabis. Most people charged with cannabis offences are from the lower/lowest socio-economic groups of society, and in NZ, are predominantly Maori. I am also wary of the fact that the Bill, although includes a minimum age of 20 to use and purchase recreational cannabis, does not address the current environment where cannabis use and addiction is accessible and established under-age. THC levels are not stated or regulated within the Bill, tax rates are not stated which must be balanced to curb the black market while not incentivising cannabis use, and there is little information on who will be allowed to sell it, what the corporate market will look like, and how drug-driving and testing will be managed. The flow-on from a competitive and driven market will likely impact the ‘under-privileged’ in negative ways – an increase in the expenditure for drugs will lead to less money, as well as capability, competency and desire, to provide healthy nutrition and nurturing environments for children, spouses, families and wider communities. This genuinely worries me. This Government has presented itself as transparent and caring. They have purported to have a focus on wellbeing and protecting vulnerable Kiwis, yet there is an anomaly between their words and actions. They have supported and promoted a smoke-free New Zealand by 2025, yet want to make recreational cannabis use legal. They claim to be supporting mental health and improving child wellbeing by reducing child poverty and addressing family violence, but the possible negative outcomes of recreational cannabis use contradict these wellbeing goals. The added shame is that the Bill is seeking to promote Treaty of Waitangi principles and values of participation, partnership and equity where the government outright rejected the consideration of cultural context, values and principles within the End of Life Choice and Abortion Bills. The Cannabis Legalisation and Control Bill will cannibalise and consume those most disadvantaged in NZ society – again, Maori. There is no place for participation, partnership and equity within such a law. There remains too many unanswered questions. New Zealanders deserve to be provided facts, not liberal, ideological and individual rights-based entitlements. I support decriminalisation and a slow, safe, measured and tested approach towards treating affliction and addiction. New Zealanders will undoubtedly vote according to the context of their values and concerns. I urge you all to cast your vote as if you are casting a vote for the future generation of Aotearoa, NZ and how that will affect our children, grandchildren and great grand-children. What world and values-based society do you want them to be nurtured and nourished by? Harete Hipango MP for Whanganui Electorate

Taranaki parents encouraged to give consent for Boostrix and HPV vaccinations Please complete and return your child’s immunisation consent form. That’s the message from Taranaki DHB’s Public Health nurses who will be visiting Year 7 and 8 schools throughout the region this month giving children consent forms for FREE Boostrix and human papillomavirus (HPV) immunisations. Public Health nurse Rachel Court is asking all parents of Year 7 and 8 children to check their school bags for the consent forms, complete them and return to school. “It’s important that each consent form is completed and returned so we know if Year 7 and 8 children are to receive their vaccination at school or through their doctor. We encourage all parents to get their children immunised so they are protected against serious diseases like measles, whooping cough and most cancers caused by HPV,” says Ms Court. Year 7 children will be given a consent form offering the Boostrix vaccination which protects against tetanus, diphtheria and whooping cough (pertussis). Year 8 children are offered the HPV vaccination which protects both males and females against nine strains of human papillomavirus responsible for cervical, mouth, throat, penile and anal cancers, and genital warts. Taranaki DHB medical officer of health, Dr Jonathan Jarman, explains that the Boostrix vaccine is a booster injection and builds on immunity from previous vaccinations when children were younger. “Protection after the booster is expected to last at least 20 years against tetanus and five years against whooping cough. “The HPV vaccine is given as two injections, spaced out over at least six months, to those aged 14 or under. Those beginning vaccination at age 15 or older will need three doses.” In New Zealand approximately 160 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer and 50 women die from it each year. HPV immunisation has been available to girls to reduce the incidence of cervical cancer since 2008, but was extended to boys and young men from January 2017 Dr Jarman says “There is a lot of social media content regarding Boostrix and HPV which some parents may find confusing, so I urge parents with queries about the vaccine to discuss them with a qualified doctor or nurse, or contact the Immunisation Advisory Centre on 0800 IMMUNE. “It’s vital that parents have access to the best possible information to help them make the right decision for their children. Please complete and return your children’s consent form so we know your decision either way”. To find out more about the free Boostrix and HPV vaccine: - talk to your doctor, local Public Health Nurse or health centre - call the Immunisation Advisory Centre free helpline 0800 IMMUNE (0800 466 863) - visit the www.health.govt.nz/hpv on the Ministry of Health website - contact the TDHB Public Health Unit Resource Room on 753 7777 ext 8862

We had a wonderful day at the junior cluster swimming sports at Whenuakura School recently. Thank you to Whenuakura for hosting this awesome well-organised event.

Our garden has a fabulous colourful addition thanks to the artistic and practical talents of Celeste and Mike Cole. Thanks for your help with brightening up our school garden, we are so grateful for the community support here in Kakaramea! Thanks also to the Quarries for their support in the garden, whipping up some beds and compost bins for us to use.

March 2020 -11 Zola Gibbs has been daydreaming about her favourite summer snack.

Room Koru and Room Rimu had a wonderful buddy session making lemonade and roasting spaghetti squash, prompted by some holiday stories and experiences. The children had fun squeezing the lemons and tasting the different lemonade concoctions ranging from sweet to sour. While the little kids didn’t much fancy the squash, the big kids couldn’t get enough of it!

Kia Ora Koutou everyone. Welcome to the 2020 school year. We have had a great start to the year with our students returning rested and rearing to go! We have welcomed four new staff members this week; Amanda McAree, Glenys Ellett, Rosalie Irwin and Jodi Smith, our new Teacher Aide who will be working in the Middle and Senior Rooms. Our School Wide topic for Term One is ‘This is Us’. We will be exploring our local community, creating and presenting our Pepeha and finding out more about Ourselves and our Families. The teachers have lots of engaging activities planned. Clubs will begin in Week 5 (Friday 6th March). We’d love help with this! Please see me if there’s a club you’d like to run - some examples of past clubs - cooking, swimming, coding, woodwork, carving and crafts. Technology has started for our Year 7 & 8 students. This year they’ll be attending sessions at Whanganui Girls College; learning Food Tech, Science, Computer Programming and Hard Materials. This will run on Mondays in Terms One and Three. We will be attending with Kai Iwi and Ngamatapouri Schools. We will start the year again with our “Achieving Together Learning Conversations”. These will take place in week 3. Last year this proved to be a fantastic opportunity to learn more about the children and where they want to go on their learning journey. I hope you have a great term. Whenuakura School ‘Growing Personal Excellence’ Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today. Malcolm X In our preparation for the 2020 school year, the above quote comes to mind. We feel a sense of urgency in catering our curriculum for our learners so that we are preparing them in the best way possible for their futures - whatever that may be. The school year has definitely started with not only ensuring we have instilled high expectations and consistent routines, but we are also offering as many opportunities as we can. Thank you to Lani Phillips for maintaining our school pool and Dean Sorensen doing this when needed too. Welcome to our newest learner Molly Honeyfield. You have made an excellent start at Whenuakura School! Our Maize is in and we would like to thank Waverley Harvesting. This is an excellent fundraiser for us and we really appreciate it. By the time that this goes to print, we would have had two of our terrifying Fright Nights! This takes a lot of time and energy from our fantastic community and we thank you for your support. Welcome back to Jo England who is working with our Tuakana Hive from home this term. It is excellent to have her skills and expertise in planning and assessment. A warm welcome also to Karen Forsyth who is teaching one day per week in our Teina Nest. We would like to thank Vicki Fong for all her work while she was at Whenuakura School. Vicki was a valuable member of our team and we miss having her around. Engaged Learners - Welcome to the Whenuakura Way Learning Conversations We are committed to individualising our programmes and were excited to work with our families to make this happen through ‘Learning Conversations’ that happened in the first week of school. These conversations help us in our planning and we discuss learner goals and aspirations, how they learn best, and their interests and passions. It is also an excellent opportunity to share our school values and approaches to teaching and learning with whanau. Sporting Success - Alton Touch Tournament 2nd - Whenuakura Foxes 3rd - Whenuakura Falcons 2nd - Whenuakura Adult Team Thanks to Alton & Districts Playgroup for another fun, community event and our coaches Conna Smith, Alva Honeyfield, and Marichen Honeyfield.

Junior Cluster Swimming It was a pleasure hosting all of the schools in our area for Junior Cluster Swimming Sports on Friday. Thank you to everyone who helped out, cheered from the sidelines and bought lunch from our BBQ. A special thanks to Te Oranganui for running activities throughout the day. Congratulations to our Impact Team on your fantastic leadership throughout the day. What a team! You showed initiative and enthusiasm. We hope everyone who attended has a great day and we look forward to hosting you again next year. Subway Bridge Gets Makeover

After five weeks being hidden behind scaffolding and scrim, the rail bridge at Hāwera’s southern entranceway was officially opened today to reveal a fresh, new look. No longer covered in tagging, the unsightly bridge now proudly displays an attractive mural by Whanganui artist Dan Mills, whose work also adorns the Hawera RSA Club. South Taranaki Mayor Phil Nixon says the rail bridge, has been an ugly, graffitied structure in much need of a facelift for many years. “It’s essentially the southern entranceway into Hāwera. Rather than a tagged, grey, dirty front door, we now have a gateway to our town which is a part of our public history, fresh, vibrant and welcoming,” he says. Mayor Nixon says Council staff worked on ideas for a mural across the façade and after lengthy consultation with NZ Kiwirail, iwi, NZTA and potential funders it all came together. The advice and guidance for much of the Māori designs were provided by the local Ngāti Hāmua & Ngāti Hāpōtiki hapū representatives, Rukutai Watene, Turangapito Parata and Chris Parata. “Dan’s proven experience working on rail bridges and his solid reputation with NZ Kiwirail was a factor in getting the project over the line. Comfortable working on large structures as well as canvas and with sculpture, his work is seen around the world from Paris to Canberra, Slovakia and New Zealand,” says Mayor Nixon. Councillor and former Hawera Community Board chair, Celine Filbee, says the artist has created a design which is meaningful, vibrant and attractive. “Kawakawa, surf, cabbage trees and whaharoa, all part of the South Taranaki landscape are elegantly combined to beautify the structure. Under the bridge a large motif of the 28th Māori Battalion stands out – acknowledging the men who served during World War II, particularly the South Taranaki Māori in D Company. I think that’s fitting because other than a few names on a Pātea Memorial, there has been little mention of these brave men in our district.” The mural project was funded by the South Taranaki District Council, Te Hāwera Community Board, Bizlink Hāwera (Business Association) and KiwiRail.

Dog Splash Day Taranaki Anniversary Weekend 2020 Every dog has its day – and on Monday 9 March, the Kaponga community swimming pool will be open exclusively for dogs for the fourth annual South Taranaki Dog Splash Day. This is a free event so come along and watch your dog enjoy a cooling dip at the pools. The entire Kaponga complex (three pools) will be open so all sizes of dogs and swimming abilities will be catered for - from those that just like to dip their paws in shallow waters to the deep-sea doggie paddler. Owners are welcome to swim with their dogs. Dogs must be social with other dogs and wearing their current council registration tag. This will be the last day the pool will be open before it is drained and cleaned for the season. Kaponga pool was chosen as it offers the best array of pool sizes and depths, with easy access for dogs. A ramp made by pool staff will be placed in the main pool so that dogs can exit easily. Don’t get in the doghouse! Bring your pooch to the Kaponga Pool, Grace Avenue, Kaponga, on Monday 9 March between 12noon and 6pm. All sizes and breeds are welcome. For more information, please contact 0800 111 323 and speak to South Taranaki Social Dog Club member Susan McMillan. For human swimming, the rural pools at Eltham, Rawhitiroa, Pātea, Manaia and Waverley will be open, free of charge, for their final day of the season.

Patea area school was overflowing with excitement as our students, staff and community came together to open our new Sports Turf. The opening ceremony included Principle Davidson, Mayor Phil Nixon, Deputy Mayor Robert Northcott and Kapoi Mathieson as representative for the TSB Community Trust. The new turf was made possible by funding from the TSB Community Trust to whom we are very grateful to have such an amazing resource for our students. The celebrations included a multisport competition where students played against parents and teachers. Sports was the winner on the day and it was great to have our dignitaries playing alongside our students.
