A first for our Club; we played an interesting and challenging doubles on 16 February 2019. Partners were drawn according to collective handicaps with a time limit of 40 minutes for each round. With the result two pairs reached the final 5th round of the sponsored Waverley RSA Club Trophy which was made by P How and shared for the first time winners, Sally Newland and Diane Kennedy. Well done also to Marie Hawken and Christine Robertson for making it a very enjoyable and exciting game to watch. Congratulations to you and to the rest of us who participated and battled on in the heat! Thank you Waverley RSA for offering this sponsorship which was a huge and very successful day by all players and supporters. It's a busy couple of months ahead with singles championship rounds and Doff Lupton Trophy. A visit to The Park Hawera, has just been played with Marie Deadman, 2nd on the day and Diane Kennedy winning the raffle. There's a visit to Tasman Croquet Club is in the very near future. Also, two teams have entered the Taranaki Masters Games in Inglewood mid March.

Ruth Merrigan It is with great sadness the members of Carlyle Women’s Institute learned of the passing of Ruth Merrigan. Ruth was a member of Patea and then Carlyle Institutes for over seventy-five years. She had a Good Service badge, 50, 60 and 70-year badges and a 75-year certificate. As well as Institute, Ruth was a Life Member of the Patea Old Folks Association. She had, in her earlier years, been Brown Owl for the Patea Brownie pack, and was also Patron of the Patea Girl Guides. Ruth was a member of Turi Rebeka Ladies Lodge until it went into recess. She was a well known at the Patea Picture Theatre as the ticket collector ad usher. Her greatest love was her faith; until the last few years of her life she never missed her Sunday worship. Having lived all her life in Patea, Ruth was a wealth of knowledge on all things relating to Patea, it’s history and residents, Ruth will be sadly missed, may she rest in peace.

How do you see God? Is Jesus Lord of your life? Or have you a sort of murky understanding of God? Is your notion of God a god that ought to be believed in? Because if your notion about God as a god to be believed in is a tad blurry then you are at a place where you need clear answers. I would dearly love to proclaim that I have all the answers to your questions, but … I do not, but God does! (trust me! This is not a cop out!) I think a lot of people see God as one who is angry at them and is going to punish you because of al your sins. Can I just say now that you are punishing yourself over your sins, or I could go deeper and say these sins are eating away your freedom! God does want you so much to be free from all this sin in your life, because He knows the harm they are doing to you. God is not - nor can He be – angry with you. Why? Because He is love, not our yardstick we measure love by, but His love is pure, trustworthy, never-ending and absolutely free. God will never ever take out a big stick and threaten you with it (even if we deserve it!). He is love, when you ask Him sincerely to forgive you or your sins, He does, and they are remembered no more! That is why Jesus came and dwelt amongst mankind, it was to reveal the Father’s love through Him to all mankind. To bind up the broken-hearted, to declare by His execution on the cross the forgiveness of all your sins. Also to expose all the works of the Devil. Which He did on the cross victoriously! If your view is of an angry God bent on punishing you, let me tell you that you have either been lied to or have misunderstood such a beautiful loving God whose best interest is you. Come Lord Jesus - Ted Reeves, Patea

INTERIOR & EXTERIOR PAINTING WALLPAPERING HOT WATER BLASTING QUALIFIED TRADESMEN

With wet and windy weather hitting parts of the country as we get into autumn, road safety charity Brake is urging drivers to keep road safety front of mind and slow down if travelling. The charity is reminding drivers to drive to the conditions, slow down and increase the gap to the vehicle in front. Stopping distances are at least double in wet weather and following the dry weather we’ve experienced even small amounts of water can result in slippery roads. The charity is reminding drivers to plan their journeys and prioritise the safety of themselves, their passengers and other road users. Caroline Perry, Brake’s NZ Director says: “Road crashes have devastating consequences. Wet and windy weather can create additional hazards on roads so we’re reminding drivers to stay alert for changing conditions. We want everyone to get to their destination safely, so it’s vital you slow down and increase your following distance to give you chance to react to hazards.” Brake’s advice for bad weather driving. If you do get caught in bad weather, follow these steps to minimise the dangers. Slow right down: If visibility is poor or the road is wet or icy, it will take you longer to react to hazards and you should reduce your speed accordingly. Take corners very slowly, and reduce speed further if your view of the road ahead is obscured. Always stay well within the speed limit and look out for temporary speed limit signs. Never speed up suddenly if fog seems to have cleared. Fog can be patchy and you may suddenly re-enter it. Maintain a safe gap behind the vehicle in front: The gap between you and the vehicle in front is your braking space in a crisis. In wet conditions you should leave four seconds, and in ice or snow, drop right back as much as possible. Stopping distances are double in the wet, and can be ten times greater in icy weather. Never hang on someone else's taillights. This can provide a false sense of security and mean you're not fully focused on the road. Be extra vigilant for people and hazards: Be aware that people on foot, bicycles, and motorbikes are harder to spot in adverse weather. Drive slowly and cautiously so you are able to spot vulnerable road users in plenty of time and not put them in danger. Look out for signs warning of hazards, people, adverse conditions or temporary lower speed limits. Stay in control: Avoid harsh braking and acceleration, and carry out manoeuvres very slowly and with extra care. Use lights: Put lights on in gloomy weather and when visibility is reduced. Use front and rear fog lights in dense fog. Remember to switch off fog lights when visibility improves. In high winds: Take extra care passing over bridges or on open stretches of road exposed to strong winds. If your vehicle is being blown about, slow right down and take great care to maintain a steady course. Keep well back from motorcycles and high-sided vehicles as they can be particularly affected by turbulence. Sun-strike: Dazzle from the sun, particularly at dawn and dusk, can be dangerous. Keep a pair of sunglasses in the vehicle all year round (prescription if needed) and keep your windscreen clean. Wear your sunglasses in bright sunshine, especially if the sun is low or reflecting off a wet road. Road Safety Week 2019 takes place 6-12 May with the theme Save Lives #SpeakUp. South Taranaki Timebank Tēnā koutou, He mihi i runga i te āhuatanga o te rā. Taranaki Timebank has been going for a few years now and we also have a South Taranaki branch, run by two co-ordinators. One is based in Hawera servicing the greater area and I am based further South in Patea & Waverley covering right down to Nukumaru. Check out our website if you have a chance or come along to an Orientation meeting to find out what Timebanking is all about. Website: http://www.taranakitimebank.nz/ March Orientation Meeting: Waverley Library Plus, 4pm Wednesday 13th March, 2019. Meetings will alternate between Patea and Waverley each month. Below is a brief account of what Timebanking is about: How does TimeBanking work? Every person has talents and gifts to share with their community that are of immense benefit to another. Rather than spending money, spend time! TimeBank's mission is to connect people who have gifts, skills and knowledge and a willingness to share them for the benefit of others; TimeBank is a "give and take" system managed through the use of computer technology and the Internet that will strengthen our community in a positive way. TimeBanking creates circles of giving. TimeBanking is a way of trading skills in a community. It facilitates the sharing of skills between its members, both individuals and organisations. TimeBanking activity is measured by the time it takes to complete a piece of work. It's a kind of money, a complimentary currency. TimeBanking builds on the magic of pay it forward. Time Credits are used as payment, not money. You earn time credits for the work you do, and then use those credits to 'buy' another member's time to get the services you need. This could be any member of the TimeBank, not necessarily the member you helped. (The member you kindly assisted may not have the skills that you need, but another TimeBank member might). Everyone's Time is Equal - no matter what type of work is undertaken, one hour always equals one time credit. 1 = 1. It really is that simple. Equally valued - we all have something to offer. Every person and every skill is equally valued. 5 Core Values of Timebanking • Assets: We are all assets. We all have something to give. • Redefining Work: Some work is beyond price. Work has to be redefined to value whatever it takes to raise healthy children, build strong families, revitalize neighbourhoods, make democracy work, advance social justice, make the planet sustainable. That kind of work needs to be honoured, recorded and rewarded. • Reciprocity: Helping works better as a two-way street. The question: “How can I help you?” needs to change so we ask: “How can we help each other - to build a world we both want to live in?” • Social Networks: We need each other. Networks are stronger than individuals. People helping each other reweave communities of support, strength & trust. Community is built upon sinking roots, building trust, creating networks. Special relationships are built on commitment. • Respect: Every human being matters. Respect underlies freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and everything we value. Respect supplies the heart and soul of democracy. When respect is denied to anyone, we all are injured. We must respect where people are in the moment, not where we hope they will be at some future point. The Timebank Circle of Caring and Giving

March 2019 - 7 In Rimu Hub the focus to start the year has been Team Building and establishing positive relationships. Building relationships is an essential part of being successful in all areas of life. Children and young people learn best when they feel accepted, when they enjoy positive relationships with their fellow learners and teachers and when they are able to be active, visible members of the learning community. Having spent time with Harold and Mark in the Life Education Trust caravan, Rimu Hub spent an afternoon problem solving and working together outside the classroom. The first challenge of the afternoon was to cook lunch. One group had no knife to butter their bread. They solved their problem - a spoon can be used to spread butter.

Other cooperative activities included crossing the playground without touching the bark, lowering a stick to the ground whilst it is balanced on everyone’s index finger and passing a ball from one blanket to another.

In class the cooperative tasks have continued with the creation of a class korowai.

The Year 8 students had one last photo with Harold and Mark. The students will move on to secondary school before Harold and Mark return.

Kia Ora Koutou Everyone, Welcome to the 2019 school year. We have had a great start to the year with several new faces joining our school. A big welcome to Regan, Quinton, Bianca, Caley, Kharlymn and their families. We have welcomed two new staff members; Alison Collier our new Junior Room teacher and Sara Taylor our new Teacher Aide in the Senior Room. They have both settled into our school so well and we are really lucky to have them both. Learning Conversations We started the year with a new initiative called “Achieving Together Learning Conversations. This proved to be a fantastic opportunity to learn more about the children and where they want to go on their learning journey. We had 100% attendance and the feedback has been amazing! The difference it has made in the classroom has been overwhelming. Thank you to every family for their support. Beach Day Well, we hit the jackpot with the weather again- a cracker day. The kids were all awesome. They created some impressive sand sculptures in their teams and gave the judges a very difficult task! The water was really warm and it was great to see all the children enjoying the surf and learning about beach safety.

Pool Cover Our new pool cover is fantastic. The water is so warm, and this is making swimming sessions so much more enjoyable for the kids. There is no grizzling or children wanting to get out early. I think the teachers are all pretty jealous on these hot summer days. Fortunately, we do get splashed a fair bit and cool down that way. Thank you once again to the McBroome Trust for funding the pool cover.

Our Mission Statement Our intention is to provide an Education in a Catholic environment, which will best enhance the wairua, the whole being, of each individual Kia Ora Welcome to St. Joseph’s School Patea

St. Joseph’s School offers a balanced education based on and encompassing the ideals and values of Jesus Christ. School policies and programmed activities strive to capture and live the Special Character of our School. Our learning programmes cover the New Zealand Curriculum Learning Areas and Religious Education. Programmes within the School are developed with regard to the composition of the community and relevant to the immediate environment. The School strives to provide a safe and happy learning space that welcomes all people and whanau involvement. For more detailed information check out our school website: http://www.stjoespatea.school.nz You can also find us on our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/St-Josephs-School-Patea

Practicing our skills learnt Lessons in progress

Special Character of our School

We are fully involved in our Community and local parishes, that being, Saints Patrick & Francis de Sales Catholic Parish Patea/Waverley. Recently some of our tauira and wider whānau members received their first Eucharist. Our Religious Education programme is integrated throughout our day to day programmes as part of our special character school. All students are able to recite prayers / karakia in both English & Te Reo Māori and are learning which karakia are appropriate to use to begin the day, for kai and to end the day. This is a natural part of our school environment and all tauira participate and have opportunities to lead these.

Term 1, January & February 2019

The School strives to provide a safe and happy learning space that welcomes all people and whānau involvement. This also allows us to provide authentic, real world learning experiences for our tamariki. We have had a busy start to the new year here at St Joseph’s School. Starting back on the 28th January, we are already almost halfway through the term. The following is a snapshot of what we have been involved in so far this year: This Term our kaupapa is “Ko au, Ko Koe” and looking at Legends and “Our Identity”. We are learning about our local area, our whakapapa (genealogy) through pepehā and who is in our whānau and will be including some local history and relating it back to some of the stories from our own iwi.

Kapahaka

From Week 1 our weekly sessions with our awesome tutor Matua Mike have continued. He makes learning accessible and fun for all. A session may include kapahaka, mau rākau, waiata, karakia, and a variety of games to give the tamariki exposure to a variety of opportunities while incorporating Te Reo Māori me ōna tikanga.

Enviroschools

We are an Enviro School and continuing this journey making plans and looking at what projects we will initiate first. We are currently looking at Our Identity and how we are a part of our local environment. We are looking at making connections between ourselves and our environment and starting to think about more sustainable practices. Incorporated into this we are looking at who we are, our identity, and how we are connected to the area we live in. We are learning about Kaitiakitanga and which Ātua Māori / Kaitiaki relate to which area. An example of this is identifying that Tangaroa is Kaitiaki of the sea and all that dwell within. Living in a coastal environment this is very relevant for us. We are looking at how this relates to us and how we can make changes to the impact we have on the environment, both at school, and within our wider community. We have some exciting projects planned for 2019 so watch out for updates as we continue to learn more about our environment and skills for a sustainable and greener future. The tamariki have come up with some ideas for repurposing, reusing and recycling products so they don’t end up in the landfill or our oceans, and waterways.

Sport - Hākinakina

We have been busy with swimming currently both at school and the cluster wide swimming sports within our wider community. Our students recently combined with Mokoia School in Beach Life Education. The Surf Lifesavers came to our school and went through the programme with us before we headed down to the beach to put some of the skills into practice in the water at our local Patea Beach.

A Few Other Highlights

Blessing to start off our school year Senior Swimming Sports in Waverley with cluster wide schools

Some insights:

We are looking at new and exciting ways of becoming better Digital Citizens, which includes learning for both staff and students. Incorporating Digital Technology into our everyday school life. Small class sizes, inclusiveness and all students participating and engaging in real life learning and building sustainable practices for the future under the umbrella of our special character school. Come and have a look to see for yourself. New and exciting kaupapa coming up, including some of our Enviroschools projects. Regular articles in the Patea and Waverley Press as well as our continued updates on our school website and Facebook page which enables us to give regular feedback using a variety of mediums. God bless you all, Saint Joseph’s School - Patea

Whenuakura School - ‘Growing Personal Excellence’ Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today. Malcolm X In our preparation for the 2019 school year, the above quote comes to mind. We feel a sense of urgency in catering our curriculum for our learners so that we are preparing them in the best way possible for their futures - whatever that may be. The school year has definitely started with not only ensuring we have instilled high expectations and consistent routines, but we are also offering as many opportunities as we can. The school is looking fantastic and we would like to thank Wellington Composting for the new bark in our playground and Syd Irving for organising this, and another thank you to R and L Transport for transporting it. We also really appreciate the tireless work from our parents in keeping our school looking tidy. Thank you Tim & Lorraine Honeyfield for allowing our senior class to use your pool in preparation for swimming sports, and Geoffrey Miller for maintaining our school pool which we are very lucky to have. Welcome to our new students - Leah Honeyfield, Georgie Williams, Amaiah Rei, Jekani Rei and Daeshanea Rei. You have all made an excellent start at Whenuakura School! Our Maize is in and we would like to thank Waverley Harvesting. This is an excellent fundraiser for us and we really appreciate it. This year we have Board of Trustees Elections approaching. Trustees do not have to be parents, or have children at our school. What you do need is a commitment to children and education and the skills to focus on student achievement. If you are interested, please let us know by visiting our school office. Engaged Learners - Welcome to the Whenuakura Way Learning Conversations We are committed to individualising our programmes and were excited to work with our families to make this happen through ‘Learning Conversations’ that happened in the first week of school. These conversations help us in our planning and we discuss learner goals and aspirations, how they learn best, and their interests and passions.

Connected Curriculum Connect Crews continue to be a popular aspect of our curriculum and provide the opportunity to provide S.T.E.A.M (science, technology, engineering, the arts and maths) based learning and utilise our expertise from the community and beyond. The excitement can be felt all around when we have Connect - just how school should be! Term 1 Connect Crews: - Fanimals with Claire Honeyfield and junior fanimals with Soni Kennely looking at animal care. - AgriKids with Dean Sorenson where they learn about all aspects of farming. - Photography Club with Bianca Mitchell learning different technical skills and unleashing their creativity. - Stop motion Animation with Jo England working on storytelling and using digital technology - Beekeeping with Bronwyn Jansen learning all about bees and how important they are for our environment. If you would like to volunteer as part of Connect please contact principal@whenuakura. school.nz.

Education Beyond the Classroom Beach Education was a valuable learning experience for all and we were lucky to be able to explore in our very own beach - Mana Bay. We also recently supported AmeriCARna in Hawera which was an exciting event to be part of. We enjoyed creating banners and drawing inspiration from those who are passionate about what they do.

March 2019 - 15 Community-Minded - Back to School Picnic Whenuakura is the place to be! We had a sunny day for our school picnic with our lovely trees providing shade and the pool and water slide cooling us down. There were lots of laughs during tug of war and the sack and egg and spoon races. We hope you all had a great time.

Sporting Success Alton Touch Tournament 1st - Whenuakura Juniors 1st - Whenuakura Thanks to Alton & Districts Playgroup for another fun, community event. Thanks to all of our players who weren’t in the final photo: Deijhana Wiki-Thomson, Marichen Honeyfield, Michelle Hurley, Lani Phillips and Delesqure,Shawn Van Delden, Blake Crawford. Thank you to the team ‘Whanuk’ for helping out and playing in the semi and final.

Junior Cluster Swimming It was a pleasure hosting all of the schools in our area for Junior Cluster Swimming Sports on Friday. Thank you to everyone who helped out, bought raffles and lunch from our BBQ, and a special thanks to Kendyl, Larnee and Kayla at Sport Taranaki for running activities throughout the day. Congratulations to our year 6 learners on your fantastic leadership throughout the day. What a team! You showed initiative and enthusiasm. We hope everyone who attended has a great day and we look forward to hosting you again next year.
